LIFE IN THE PIT
"Why is light given to the toilers, and life to the bitter in spirit?" —Job 3:20

Nearly all of us can identify in some way with Job’s misery. Sometimes life is bitter (Jb 3:20) and full of drudgery (Jb 7:1). Relief eludes us (Jb 3:13), and death seems better than any hidden treasure the future could possibly hold (Jb 3:21). Then it gets worse. We “have forgotten what happiness is” (Lam 3:17; Jb 7:7).

When life is no longer worth living, then we’ve forgotten what life really is. To be more specific, we’ve forgotten Who Life is. Jesus is Life (Jn 11:25; 14:6). Because Jesus is Life, our lives are full of meaning, power, and hope, no matter how miserable our circumstances. Because we are alive, we Christians carry in our bodies the life of Jesus (2 Cor 4:10). His life is revealed in our bodies, even though we are being delivered to death (2 Cor 4:11).

Jesus enables us to become better instead of bitter. On the cross, Jesus overcame all the bitterness and misery that ever existed. He understands our pain and misery far better than we do (Heb 2:17-18). Jesus, the Deliverer (Ps 18:3), sometimes rescues us from “the pit” (Ps 40:2-3). If He doesn’t rescue us from “the bottom of the pit” (Ps 88:7), then He does something even better: He comes into the pit with us and shares His life with us (Ps 23:4; Mt 1:23, 28:20). We Christians believe that it’s far better to be in the pit with Jesus than to be comfortable without Him (see Ps 84:11). With Jesus the Life by our side, we have life “to the full” (Jn 10:10).

Prayer: Jesus, "to me, 'life' means" You (Phil 1:21). Thank You for the gift of my life.

Promise: Jesus "firmly resolved to proceed toward Jerusalem." —Lk 9:51

Praise: St. Therese suffered dark nights of doubt and trial only to enjoy the eternal joy of spending her "heaven doing good on earth."

THE ONE-TWO PUNCH
"The Lord said to Satan, 'Behold, all that he has is in your power.' " —Job 1:12

Satan is the father of lies (Jn 8:44). He is especially devious in tempting us. For example, he tried to get Job to say something “disrespectful of God” (Jb 1:22) and to curse God (Jb 2:9). Job, however, did not fall for Satan’s series of temptations. First, Satan had the Sabeans steal Job’s oxen and asses (Jb 1:14-15). In our economy, this would have been a theft of several thousand dollars worth of property. Next, lightning struck and destroyed more of Job’s property, killing some of his employees (Jb 1:16). If Job hadn’t forgiven the Sabeans and placed the first catastrophe in God’s hands, he might have blamed God for the second catastrophe. This would have turned his heart from God and planted a seed which would have grown into a sin of disrespect and cursing against God.

After this one-two punch failed, Satan tried it again on Job, but with greater intensity. The Chaldeans robbed Job of camels which were probably worth much more than Job’s oxen and asses (Jb 1:17). These Chaldeans also murdered several of Job’s employees (Jb 1:17). If Job had hated these Chaldeans for their crimes, he probably would have sinned and been knocked out when he heard the devastating news that all ten of his children had been killed in an accident (Jb 1:18-19). Doesn’t bad news often come in pairs or bunches? Don’t we often get the worst news when we already feel bad? That’s why we must turn to God, forgive, and shake off the first punch before the second one hits.

Prayer: Father, give me wisdom and love so that I will not be outwitted by the evil one (see 2 Cor 2:11).

Promise: "Whoever welcomes this little child on My account welcomes Me, and whoever welcomes Me welcomes Him Who sent Me; for the least one among you is the greatest." —Lk 9:48

Praise: St. Jerome loved sinners so much he promoted Scripture, piety, relics, and clerical celibacy. He also refuted heresies. He fiercely spent his energies for love of God and the Church.

THE DISCARD PILE?
"Stop them." —Numbers 11:28

In today’s Mass readings, several people wanted to discard others who were different from them. Joshua wanted to discard Eldad and Medad (Nm 11:27-28). St. John the Apostle wanted to discard those who were ministering in Jesus’ name but weren’t of the company of the apostles (Mk 9:38). The secular culture would have us discard Jesus, a life based on faith, restrictions on pleasure-seeking, and even the words “sin” and “holiness.”

However, Jesus had different ideas about what was to be discarded; He wanted to discard anything which caused people to lead others into sin (Mk 9:42-47). The author of the book of James wanted people to discard unjust use of money (Jas 5:2ff) and a lifestyle of pleasure which discarded concern for the poor (Jas 5:4-6). Pope Francis has frequently spoken against “a culture of waste,” which discards people, in particular the marginalized.

When we renew our Baptismal promises each year at the Easter liturgies, we renounce, that is discard, Satan, all his works, and all his empty promises. What would Jesus have you discard today? Are there any attitudes, sins, attachments, and addictions He wants you to discard? Let us discard the correct things and retain all that is of God.

Prayer: Father, may I be a good steward who keeps exactly what You wish (Mt 13:52) and discards nothing You want me to retain (Lk 13:9).

Promise: "The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever." —Ps 19:10

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus! "Absolute fullness resides in" You (Col 1:19). Alleluia!

DESTROYING DEATH (1 Cor 15:26)
"You make an end of them in their sleep." —Psalm 90:5

The author of Ecclesiastes, living centuries before the revelation of Jesus, the Resurrection and the Life (Jn 11:25), is naturally pessimistic about life. For example, he goes on and on about growing old. Then he speaks of death in six ways. Death is like going home, a snapped cord, a broken bowl, a shattered pitcher, a pulley fallen into a well, and dust returning to earth (Eccl 12:5-7). It isn’t enough for him to say that we will die. He seems obligated to belabor the point.

Death, for the author of Ecclesiastes, almost ruins life. Death has a deadly sting; it is seemingly victorious over life (cf 1 Cor 15:55). Because of the overshadowing influence of death, we are tempted to trivialize life by eating and drinking, for tomorrow we die (1 Cor 15:32; Wis 2:5-6ff). Living for pleasure makes us slaves — slaves of sin through fear of death our whole lives long (Heb 2:15). Because of death, we are tempted to give “allegiance to the present age and to the prince of the air, that spirit who is even now at work among the rebellious. All of us were once of their company; we lived at the level of the flesh, following every whim and fancy, and so by nature deserved God’s wrath like the rest” (Eph 2:2-3). The fear of death can turn our lives into living deaths (see 1 Jn 3:14).

The only way to de-fang death is to believe in and live totally for Jesus, “the Resurrection and the Life” (Jn 11:25). Jesus alone holds “the keys of death” (Rv 1:18). In Jesus, “death is swallowed up in victory” (1 Cor 15:54). Praise Jesus forever!

Prayer: Father, may my dying day be the happiest day of my life.

Promise: "Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart." —Ps 90:12

Praise: St. Lawrence Ruiz and his companions were martyred in a most horrendous way. They would not renounce their faith.

CROWDED CONDITIONS
Jesus "put the question to them, 'Who do the crowds say that I am?' " —Luke 9:18

Before Jesus asked His disciples: “Who do you say that I am?” (Lk 9:20), He asked: “Who do the crowds say that I am?” (Lk 9:18) Jesus did this to show we must separate ourselves from the crowd if we are to truly acknowledge Him as the Messiah, Lord, and God (see Lk 9:20).

Crowd-pleasers aren’t God-pleasers. Jesus is not popular; He is a “sign that will be opposed” (Lk 2:34). The crowd took part in crucifying Jesus, and it hasn’t changed. Therefore, we are enemies of Christ and His cross if we are a crowd-pleaser, set on the things of the world, those things the crowd has always run after (Phil 3:18-19; see also Jas 4:4).

When we step out of line, the crowd sees this as our judgment against it (Wis 2:12). This makes us unpopular, then rejected, and finally hated and persecuted (see Jn 15:19-21). This helps us understand Jesus’ words to Peter after his profession of faith in Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus said: “The Son of Man...must first endure many sufferings, be rejected by the elders, the high priests and the scribes, and be put to death, and then be raised up on the third day” (Lk 9:22). Believing in Jesus means not being part of the crowd, which means suffering as Jesus suffered.

Don’t get crowded out of life in Christ. It’s better to be persecuted by the crowd than to be persecuting in the crowd. Follow Jesus; leave the crowd behind.

Prayer: Father, may I never cry out, "Crucify Him, crucify Him," no matter how many people are yelling it (see Mt 27:22-23).

Promise: "Blessed be the Lord, my Rock, Who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war; my Refuge and my Fortress, my Stronghold, my Deliverer, my Shield, in Whom I trust." —Ps 144:1-2

Praise: St. Vincent de Paul is the patron saint of all charitable societies.

NO ADDITIVES
"Add nothing to His words, lest He reprove you, and you be exposed as a deceiver." —Proverbs 30:6

When the Bible uses the phrase, “God’s words,” it does not refer only to the Bible. The Bible refers to itself as “the Scriptures,” that is, the written Word of God (see Mt 21:42; 22:29). “God’s words” include the Scriptures, and also the authoritative teaching of the Church which preceded and is the basis of the Scriptures. So in Proverbs 30:6, the Lord commands us to add nothing to the teachings of the Church, including both its teaching through the Bible and its oral, authoritative teachings throughout the centuries.

However, many people nullify God’s Word in favor of merely human traditions (Mk 7:13). For example, they take pop-psychology and the propaganda of secular humanist institutions as the gospel truth, while denying the truth of the Gospel. We nullify God’s Word by giving unquestioned authority to those ideas which the media chooses to present as infallible.

At the same time, we are arrogant and confused enough to subtract from God’s Word. We are tempted to take less and less of it authoritatively, as we ignore Sacred Tradition and water down the Bible. In the last few verses of the Bible, the Lord warns us: “If anyone adds to these words, God will visit him with all the plagues described herein! If anyone takes from the words of this prophetic book, God will take away his share in the tree of life and the holy city described here!” (Rv 22:18-19)

Prayer: Father, Your words are spirit and life (Jn 6:63). May I know and live them. May I submit to them as they are taught by the Church.

Promise: "So they set out and went from village to village, spreading the good news everywhere and curing diseases." —Lk 9:6

Praise: After a new experience of Pentecost, Alex received the Holy Spirit and life to the full (Jn 10:10).

WATER FOUNTAIN
"Like a stream is the king's heart in the hand of the Lord; wherever it pleases Him, He directs it." —Proverbs 21:1

The Lord wants our hearts to become like water in His hand. With our hand, we can sprinkle, splash, stir, hold, throw, or pour water. Water offers little resistance. We can do almost anything we want with it.

Is your heart like water in God’s hand, or is it like ice or glue? Will you let the Lord pour you out as a libation (Phil 2:17; 2 Tm 4:6), or are you only a drip? Can you be splashed and sprinkled, or are you so set in your ways that you are like molasses? Will you let the Lord throw you into anything at any time, or are you sticky? When God stirs you, do you thank and praise Him, or do you complain? Will you let the Lord hold you, or are you leaky?

When we totally give our lives to Jesus, we “accept the gift of life-giving water” (Rv 22:17). When we receive the Holy Spirit, from within us “rivers of living water” flow (Jn 7:38). The water Jesus gives us becomes “a fountain” within us “leaping up to provide eternal life” (Jn 4:14). We have rivers of leaping, living water within us. Be like water in God’s hand.

Prayer: Father, make me humble and docile to Your touch.

Promise: Jesus said: "My mother and My brothers are those who hear the word of God and act upon it." —Lk 8:21

PRIVILEGED POSITION
"No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bushel basket or under a bed; he puts it on a lampstand so that whoever comes in can see it." —Luke 8:16

Jesus commanded us to put His light on the lampstand and proclaim the Gospel to the whole world (Lk 8:16). He also said His Word would get out to people even if we failed to proclaim it.  “There is nothing hidden that will not be exposed, nothing concealed that will not be known and brought to light” (Lk 8:17).

Jesus can do the job without us. He calls us not so much because He needs us but because we need Him. Evangelization is more than our obligation; it’s our privilege. What greater honor is there than to serve God Himself! With the psalmist, we should pray: “I had rather one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I had rather lie at the threshold of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked” (Ps 84:11).

When we serve and pray, work and suffer for the Lord, we have done Him no favor. He has favored us by letting us be part of His kingdom. “When you have done all you have been commanded to do, say, ‘We are useless servants. We have done no more than our duty’ ” (Lk 17:10). Thank the Lord for the privilege of living and dying for Him.

Prayer: Jesus, why did You die for me? Am I really worth that much to You? I love You.

Promise: "When He is dealing with the arrogant, He is stern, but to the humble He shows kindness." —Prv 3:34

Praise: God gave St. Pio the gift of reading hearts, particularly when hearing Confessions.

PLEASURE SEEKING OR TREASURE SEEKING
"You ask and you do not receive because you ask wrongly, with a view to squandering what you receive on your pleasures." —James 4:3

Human history provides ample testimony about the effects of pleasure seeking. One pleasure is never enough. People always want the next pleasure, followed by another. Companies thrive by stoking the pleasure-seeking desires of consumers. Left to our own desires, we become slaves of pleasure-seeking, servants of the cravings of our own flesh (see Rm 6:12).

I challenge you to spend the next ten seconds looking at a crucifix. “Fix your eyes on Jesus” (Heb 3:1). As you gaze on Jesus’ crucified body, ask yourself these questions: “What if Jesus chose to pursue earthly pleasure as often as I do? What if He chose not to suffer and die for me?” Then ask Jesus to break the chains of your fleshly desires. “Already you have devoted enough time” on your pleasures (1 Pt 4:3). Now devote the rest of your time on earth to seeking God’s pleasure. Through the cross, be crucified to the world (Gal 6:14).

When you are crucified to your own desires, you are then empty enough to receive God’s desires (see Phil 2:7). Then you are ready to receive God’s treasures: abundant life, joy, peace, love, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit (see Gal 5:22ff). Repent of following your desires. Seek the lasting pleasures of God rather than the momentary pleasures of this world (Ps 104:34). Make the Lord your only Treasure (Mt 13:44).

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to fight against my flesh (Gal 5:17). Cleanse my heart of useless desires (Jn 2:15).

Promise: "Let us condemn Him to a shameful death; for according to His own words, God will take care of Him." —Wis 2:20

Praise: Praise You, Jesus! You are "the Resurrection and the Life" (Jn 11:25). Glory be to You forever!

A TRAITOR CONVERTS!
"Jesus saw a man named Matthew at his post where taxes were collected." —Matthew 9:9

St. Matthew was a tax collector. To a Jew, this was one of the most despicable jobs possible (see Mt 18:17). Tax collectors usually perpetrated violence and injustice against the poor. Worse than that, however, they sold out to the enemy, the Romans. Moreover, their association with the Romans made them unclean. Thus, tax collectors gave up their participation in the Jewish community and its worship.

Because of all this, a good Jew would not greet or associate with a tax collector. To eat with a tax collector and call him to become a disciple would be almost blasphemous to a good Jew. Therefore, Jesus’ calling of Matthew to become a disciple was either an astounding revelation of God’s grace or nothing less than an abomination before God.

Matthew’s calling and conversion is a radical statement that:

  • God can convert the hardest heart (see 1 Tm 1:15-16).
  • “Nothing is impossible with God” (Lk 1:37).
  • “Mercy triumphs over judgment” (Jas 2:13).
  • Grace surpasses sin (Rm 5:20).
  • God chooses the despised (1 Cor 1:28).
  • Where there’s life, there’s hope (see Eccl 9:4).

Rejoice, for today is the feast of St. Matthew, a day of mercy and hope.

Prayer: Father, fill me with hope because of St. Matthew's conversion.

Promise: "I plead with you, then, as a prisoner for the Lord, to live a life worthy of the calling you have received." —Eph 4:1

Praise: St. Matthew left the false security of the world's kingdom for the true security of God's kingdom.

LIVING THE CHANGE
"We should then be exposed as false witnesses of God."—1 Corinthians 15:15

The Resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the central event of our faith (1 Cor 15:14ff). Our response to Jesus’ Resurrection makes a total difference in the world around us. If we do not live as a risen people, living a risen life to the full (Jn 10:10), with our entire existence transformed, then we look no different from those in the world.

Satan couldn’t stop Jesus from rising from the dead. So now he is reduced to trying to stop people from living the risen life in Christ. If Satan can get Christians to stop living “the radical newness of [their] Christian life that comes from Baptism” (Lay Members of Christ’s Faithful People Pope St. John Paul II,10), he has accomplished much of his evil goal. When Christians live a listless, faithless life, the world sees that resurrection makes no practical difference and decides that this life is all there is (see 1 Cor 15:19, 32).

We Christians must allow the Resurrection of Jesus to set our hearts on fire (Lk 24:32). When we encounter the risen Jesus, receive the Holy Spirit, and change our lifestyles accordingly, the change “cannot be hidden” (Mt 5:14). The world may not believe, but they will not be able to miss the joy and the changes in our lives as we radiate love, peace, and courage. The world will come to believe if they see us live like we truly have faith in Jesus risen from the dead.

Prayer: Father, may I "rate all as loss in the light of the surpassing knowledge of my Lord Jesus Christ" (Phil 3:8).

Promise: "As it is, Christ is now raised from the dead." —1 Cor 15:20

Praise: The faith of the Korean Martyrs was formed and strengthened by God's Word. Their witness transformed the lives of thousands.

I "YAM" OR I AM?
"By God's favor I am what I am." —1 Corinthians 15:10

The old cartoon character, Popeye, used to flex his muscles, eat spinach, and say: “I yam what I yam. I’m Popeye, the sailor man.” Popeye was unwittingly quoting the Bible in the first part of this statement. St. Paul also said: “I am what I am” (1 Cor 15:10), but he didn’t add: “I’m Paul, the sailor man.” His addition was: “By God’s favor I am what I am.”

Christians base their identity on God’s grace. Our relationship with Jesus, not our job, is the essence of a Christian’s identity. Our self-image is not primarily based on our looks or our muscles, as was Popeye’s. As followers of Christ, we see our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:19), not as expressions of our ego, pride, and vanity. Christians base their identity on eating Jesus’ flesh and drinking His Blood, on receiving Him in Holy Communion (Jn 6:55). Christians are in Christ. We say, “I am what I am,” because Jesus is the great I AM (see Jn 8:58).

Prayer: Father, give me the mind of Christ, not my own mind or the mind of the world (1 Cor 2:16).

Promise: "I tell you, that is why her many sins are forgiven — because of her great love. Little is forgiven the one whose love is small." —Lk 7:47

Praise: Little is known of St. Januarius who died around 305 A.D. However, he is still remembered centuries later because of the martyr's blood he shed for love of Jesus.

DO YOU LOVE? - One Bread, One Body, 09/18/2024

DO YOU LOVE?
"If I give everything I have to feed the poor and hand over my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing." —1 Corinthians 13:3

Without love, even the best things in your life mean nothing. Therefore, the most important questions in the world are: Do you love the Lord with all your heart and soul? (Lk 10:27) Do you love your neighbor as yourself? (Lk 10:27) Do you love your brothers and sisters in Christ? (1 Jn 4:7) Do you love your enemies? (Lk 6:27, 35) Are you growing in love?

To answer these questions, we must know the meaning of love. “The way we came to understand love was that [Jesus] laid down His life for us; we too must lay down our lives for our brothers” and sisters (1 Jn 3:16). Love is not a feeling or an experience; rather, it is a commitment to be faithful to others even if we must die for them. Love is long-suffering and bearing others’ burdens (see 1 Cor 13:4). It is not jealous, proud, and selfish; it is forgiving (see 1 Cor 13:5). The perfect picture of love is Jesus hanging on the cross. “There is no greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (Jn 15:13). “It is precisely in this that God proves His love for us” (Rm 5:8).

To love authentically, more deeply, and even completely (see 1 Jn 4:12, 17, 18), we must become purified. We are purified by obedience, especially by obeying the Lord in being faithful and true to the people He puts in our lives (1 Pt 1:22).

“God is Love” (1 Jn 4:8, 16). Live in love (Jn 15:9-10).

Prayer: Father, may love displace fear in my life (1 Jn 4:18).

Promise: "Love never fails." —1 Cor 13:8

Praise: "He is the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords Who alone has immortality and Who dwells in unapproachable light, Whom no human being has ever seen or can see. To Him be honor and everlasting rule! Amen" (1 Tm 6:15-16).

SEEK THE GIFTS - One Bread, One Body, 09/17/2024

SEEK THE GIFTS
"God has set up in the Church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracle workers, healers, assistants, administrators, and those who speak in tongues." —1 Corinthians 12:28

Jesus “ascended high above the heavens, that He might fill all men with His gifts” (Eph 4:10). He commands us to set our hearts on spiritual gifts (1 Cor 14:1), especially on the greater gifts (1 Cor 12:31), “those that build up the Church” (1 Cor 14:12). The Lord does not want us to be ignorant of spiritual gifts (1 Cor 12:1). Consequently, the Father and the Son have sent the Holy Spirit not only to give us gifts, but also to help “us to recognize the gifts He has given us” (1 Cor 2:12).

In summary,

1)      each Christian has several gifts of the Spirit,

2)      we must recognize, use, and develop these gifts,

3)      we need the benefits of all the gifts of the Spirit, and

4)      therefore, we must seek out and be open to the ministry of other Christians as they use their spiritual gifts.

This is what it means to set our hearts on spiritual gifts. We should pray that we will recognize and use all our spiritual gifts. That even one spiritual gift in one Christian be undeveloped is a significant loss for the Church and the world. Furthermore, we should pray that the Lord opens our eyes to see those around us gifted by the Spirit (see Eph 1:18). Many of these Christians are not strongly developed in the use of their spiritual gifts, but they have such a treasure within them (see 2 Cor 4:7), if we can only appreciate it. Seek the gifts in yourself and in the Church.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, may I not waste in any way the gifts You gave me in Baptism and Confirmation.

Promise: Jesus "said, 'Young man, I bid you get up.' The dead man sat up and began to speak." —Lk 7:14-15

Praise: Though uneducated, St. Hildegard is a Doctor of the Church. She was a mystic, composer, philosopher, and abbess.

PAINFUL UNITY
"There may even have to be factions among you for the tried and true to stand out clearly." —1 Corinthians 11:19

Jesus prays at this moment that we may be one as He and the Father are One (Jn 17:21). However, this unity must come about through conversion and not by compromising basic truths. Jesus is not praying for the lowest-common-denominator unity of a watered-down Gospel. Rather, He prays for a Trinitarian unity which comes from deep repentance and radical transformation.

To help us grow into this kind of unity, Jesus often brings division (Lk 12:51). Most of the time this cannot be avoided. For example, if a pastor seriously wants to renew his parish, he usually must resign himself to parishioners leaving, greater discord in the parish, and persecution. If parents want to see their children united under Jesus’ lordship, they will probably experience greater conflict and alienation from some of their children for a time. The way to unity in church, marriage, family, etc., is the way of the cross (see Lk 14:27) — painful division and persecution endured through unconditional love. On Calvary, Jesus paid the price for unity; now He prays for us to make our contribution (see Col 1:24). Will you pay the painful price?

Prayer: Father, may I want unity more than I want my own way and my personal comfort.

Promise: "Just give the order and my servant will be cured." —Lk 7:7

Praise: St. Cyprian was condemned to death for his faith in Jesus. At his sentencing, it was decreed: "It is decided that Thascius Cyprian should die by the sword" Cyprian responded with "Thanks be to God!"

THE PRIVILEGE OF SUFFERING (Phil 1:29) - One Bread, One Body, 09/15/2024

THE PRIVILEGE OF SUFFERING (Phil 1:29)
"He began to teach them that the Son of Man had to suffer much, be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, be put to death, and rise three days later. He said these things quite openly." —Mark 8:31-32

Jesus is very open about the fact that we will have to suffer and bear our “share of the hardship which the gospel entails” (2 Tm 1:8). He bluntly states that we who follow Him must deny ourselves and take up the cross (Mk 8:34). Suffering is the way of salvation, necessary for the completion of God’s plan of salvation. We fill up in our own flesh “what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ for the sake of His body, the Church” (Col 1:24).

This does not mean that all suffering is God’s will. Jesus repeatedly took people out of suffering by healing and delivering them. Every hospital, doctor’s office, and social service agency exists to alleviate suffering. Yet some sufferings are in the pattern of Jesus’ death (Phil 3:10). These we should not relieve but accept as our sharing in the sufferings of Christ (see Rm 8:17).

“See to it none of you suffers for being a murderer, a thief, a malefactor, or a destroyer of another’s rights. If anyone suffers for being a Christian, however, he ought not to be ashamed. He should rather glorify God in virtue of that name” (1 Pt 4:15-16).

Prayer: King Jesus, may I be found worthy of Your kingdom and suffer for it (2 Thes 1:5).

Promise: "The Lord God is my Help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame." —Is 50:7

Praise: "We praise You, the Lord God Almighty, Who is and Who was. You have assumed Your great power, You have begun Your reign" (Rv 11:17).

“When I behold the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss and pour contempt on all my pride.” This traditional hymn simply says that when we look at the cross, we can change dramatically.

“They shall look on Him Whom they have pierced” (Jn 19:37). “The centurion who stood guard over [Jesus], on seeing the manner of His death, declared, ‘Clearly this Man was the Son of God!’ ” (Mk 15:39) When we see Jesus lifted up on the cross, as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, we are drawn to believe and “have eternal life in Him” (Jn 3:14-15; 12:32). St. Paul transformed the most hardened hearts by speaking “of nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Cor 2:2). He proclaimed the gospel by displaying before the eyes of all Jesus Christ upon the cross (Gal 3:1).

Would you prayerfully consider looking for ten seconds daily at a representation of Jesus on the cross? This prayer in action will be the occasion for Jesus transforming you into a new person. You will proclaim with St. Paul: “May I never boast of anything but the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ! Through it, the world has been crucified to me and I to the world” (Gal 6:14).

Prayer: Jesus, may I always consciously live in the shadow of Your cross.

Promise: "It was thus that He humbled Himself, obediently accepting even death, death on a cross! Because of this, God highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name above every other name." —Phil 2:8-9

Praise: The 4,200 white crosses erected in front of a local church, representing the number of babies surgically aborted in one day, have helped people realize the gravity of abortion.

SPECK-TACULAR
"You will see clearly enough to remove the speck from your brother's eye." —Luke 6:42

Jesus has commissioned us to remove the specks from other people’s eyes. The sins of other people are our concern because we love these people enough to try to keep them from destroying themselves through sin.

However, we are not ready to work on others’ eyes until we have first let the Lord deal with our own spiritual blindness due to sin (Lk 6:42). Blind eye surgeons do much more harm than good.

When we repent and confess our sins, we humble ourselves. This is a necessary preparation for dealing with the pride of sin in someone else. Proud preachers turn people off when they call others to humility.

When we repent, we learn several things. We realize the horror of sin, its addictive and paralyzing effects, and most of all, the mercy and compassion of our heavenly Father. Without understanding these things, we are not effective in helping others repent. Teachers who don’t understand are not very understandable.

Repentance and Confession are essential not only to our relationship with the Lord, but also to our preparation for speck-removal. If you haven’t had a plank removed, you're not ready to remove a speck. “Walk the plank” of repentance.

Prayer: Father, make me a prophet and minister of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18).

Promise: "I do not run like a man who loses sight of the finish line. I do not fight as if I were shadowboxing. What I do is discipline my own body and master it." —1 Cor 9:26-27

Praise: St. John Chrysostom died for Jesus while in forced exile because of his bold public stand for holiness.

OCCASIONS OF SIN
"Therefore, if food causes my brother to sin I will never eat meat again, so that I may not be an occasion of sin to him." —1 Corinthians 8:13

Eating meat that had been offered to idols was an occasion of sin for many Corinthian and Roman Christians (Rm 14:20-21). Nothing was wrong with this practice of itself, but it wounded the consciences of some Christians. Therefore, St. Paul said he would never eat meat again.

Today, alcohol is an occasion of sin to many people. Therefore, out of love for them we give up our right to drink alcohol where there is even the possibility of this being an occasion of sin (see e.g. Eph 5:18). This is especially true in the case of the public sale and consumption of alcohol, which is popular with many churches.

Gambling is also an occasion of sin in our society. Therefore, love of neighbor can move us not to buy another lottery ticket, or promote bingo, raffles, or games of chance where there is even the possibility of this being an occasion of sin (see 1 Tm 6:10).

Sins of sexual fantasies, masturbation, fornication, and adultery are pandemic in our world. Therefore, we should be careful to dress modestly and never mention sexual impurity in our conversation (Eph 5:3-4).

St. Paul stated emphatically: “When you sin thus against your brothers and wound their weak consciences, you are sinning against Christ” (1 Cor 8:12).

Prayer: Father, may I be more concerned about holiness than pleasure.

Promise: "Love your enemy and do good; lend without expecting repayment. Then will your recompense be great." —Lk 6:35

Praise: We who call upon the name of Mary...may receive strength and comfort in all our needs" (Marian Sacramentary, Mass of the Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary).

WHOM DO I WANT TO PLEASE?
"Woe to you when all speak well of you." —Luke 6:26

Most of us want people to speak well of us. However, we cannot serve both God and men (see Mt 6:24). We must choose between pleasing God and pleasing people. The praise of human beings is fickle. Jesus understood this well (Jn 2:24-25). In the span of five days, the crowds in Jerusalem changed from acclaiming Him with joyful shouts of  “Hosanna” (Mk 11:9) to furious cries of “Crucify Him!” (Mk 15:13)

St. Paul understood this dynamic also. He chose to write a necessary but difficult message to his young church in Galatia. Paul wrote them: “Whom would you say I am trying to please at this point – men or God? Is this how I seek to ingratiate myself with men? If I were trying to win man’s approval, I would surely not be serving Christ!” (Gal 1:10) Paul also wrote to the church in Thessalonica: “As men entrusted with the good tidings, we speak like those who strive to please God, ‘the Tester of our hearts,’ rather than men. We were not guilty, as you well know, of flattering words or greed under any pretext, as God is our witness! Neither did we seek glory from men” (1 Thes 2:4-6).

Unlike St. Paul, the Pharisees “preferred the praise of men to the glory of God” (Jn 12:43). They rejected Jesus and thus exemplified Jesus’ comment, “Woe to you when all speak well of you” (Lk 6:26). Therefore, rejoice when people speak ill of you, especially for your belief in the Lord (see Lk 6:22, 26). Let us live no longer for ourselves, but for Jesus (2 Cor 5:15).

Prayer: Father, may I be full of joy to be "judged worthy of ill treatment for the sake of the Name" of Jesus (Acts 5:41).

Promise: "Blest are you poor; the reign of God is yours." —Lk 6:20

Praise: Stephen not only fasts on Fridays, but for fifteen years has spent an hour in Eucharistic adoration every Friday.

CONFLICTING REPORTS
"Those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured; indeed, the whole crowd was trying to touch Him because power went out from Him which cured all." —Luke 6:18-19

St. Luke has just finished recounting five conflicts the religious leaders had with Jesus. They got upset with Jesus over the observance of the sabbath, fasting, the company He kept, and claiming authority to forgive sins. At the end of round five, the religious leaders “became frenzied and began asking one another what could be done to Jesus” (Lk 6:11).

Natural responses to a barrage of complaints and accusations include disturbance, fear, resentment, and withdrawal. Instead, Jesus responded by “spending the night in communion with God” (Lk 6:12), selecting the twelve apostles (Lk 6:13), and healing the sick (Lk 6:19).

Let’s pray for the grace to respond to a barrage of conflicts in the same way Jesus did: by not being perturbed but remaining calm so that we “will be able to pray” (1 Pt 4:7). When we’re going through the agony in the garden, we must take a long time to pray. We should also select others to support us in prayer, even if this exposes us to further rejection. Finally, we should place our own hurts in God’s hands and, although wounded, reach out to heal others.

Prayer: Jesus, give me the grace to make a supernatural response to conflicts.

Promise: "You have been washed, consecrated, justified in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God."—1 Cor 6:11
