BRING THE GOSPELS
"I have no one with me but Luke. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he can be of great service to me." —2 Timothy 4:11

St. Luke was “with” St. Paul (2 Tm 4:11). Luke, a physician, accompanied Paul on parts of several missionary journeys. Paul suffered from multiple physical ailments (see 2 Cor 11:23-27) and could have benefitted from having a doctor with him. When writing the Acts of the Apostles, Luke’s narrative changes from “they” to “we” in several places (Acts 16:10-17; 20:5-15; 21:1-18; 27:1—28:16). This is considered by scholars as evidence that Luke was with Paul at those times (2 Tm 4:11).

Luke can be with you also. You can have Luke with you by carrying a Bible with you. That way, you will “get Mark” also (2 Tm 4:11), as well as John and Matthew. Like St. Paul, bring the “parchments” (2 Tm 4:13), on which were written the Scriptures. It is easier than ever to bring Luke with you. Bring your Bible to church, to work, to the park, to your friends, to meals.

Now consider that Luke not only gave us a Gospel, but also the Acts of the Apostles. Jesus and the Father poured out the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and the Spirit is with us always. Luke urges us to receive the Holy Spirit and operate in the gifts and power of the Spirit.

Today, on this feast day of St. Luke, spend at least fifteen minutes reading from the Gospel of Luke or the Acts of the Apostles. Let Luke be “with you.”

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to hunger for Your Word more than for daily meals (Mt 4:4).

Promise: "The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth." —Ps 145:18

Praise: St. Luke "carefully traced the whole sequence of events" in the life of Jesus and the growth of the Church. Because of his care and discernment, we know about the Annunciation, the prodigal son, the good Samaritan, the good thief, Pentecost, and the growth of the Church. Praise You, Jesus, for the life of Luke!

BLESSINGS AND PRAISE
"Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who has bestowed on us in Christ every spiritual blessing in the heavens! God chose us in Him before the world began, to be holy and blameless in His sight." —Ephesians 1:3-4

Holy and blameless — this is how God sees us in Christ. A great blessing of being in Christ is that not only can we approach God, but He dwells within us! (Jn 6:56; 17:23) Another great spiritual blessing is that the Holy Spirit is the first Installment of our inheritance with God (Eph 1:14). In addition to these blessings, God has bestowed on us “every spiritual blessing” (Eph 1:3).

How can we respond to God for these blessings? Praise is the response, because blessing and praise go together (Rv 5:12, 13; 7:12). Praise God with everything you’ve got. Sing and praise with greater enthusiasm than you have at your favorite sporting event. God is in the spotlight of your praise, receiving everything that you have to give. “Sing joyfully to the Lord…break into song; sing praise…sing joyfully before the King, the Lord” (Ps 98:4-6).

There are various ways to praise and worship God:

  • in joyous singing (Ps 95:1-2),
  • by lifting our hands to Him (Ps 63:5),
  • by giving to others (Lk 6:38) and to God (Mal 3:10) beyond measure,
  • in telling others about God’s kindness (Ps 63:4),
  • in quiet meditation (Ps 119:97; Mt 6:6), and
  • on our knees (Ps 95:6).

God gives us every blessing. Give Him every praise!

Prayer: Father, give me the grace and the desire to praise You like I never have before.

Promise: "It is in Christ and through His blood that we have been redeemed and our sins forgiven." —Eph 1:7

Praise: St. Ignatius of Antioch advised: "Turn a deaf ear to the talk of anyone whose language has nothing to do with Jesus Christ."

THE DIFFICULT SCRIPTURE VERSE
"Since we live by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit's lead." —Galatians 5:25

Sometimes you will find that most of the verses of the Scripture passages for Mass each day are acceptable even to pagans, secular humanists, and fallen-away Catholics. For example, in today’s Gospel reading, Jesus points out the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and tells the Bible lawyers not to burden people without helping them (Lk 11:43-46). Many anti-Christians certainly agree with Jesus on these two points. In today’s reading from Galatians, the fruit of the Spirit is described as love, joy, and peace (Gal 5:22). Almost everyone believes in love, joy, and peace, although they may define these words differently than Christians do. However, many non-Christians and even some Christians rabidly reject “something” in the daily Scripture readings. If we obey the Lord in these difficult passages, then we are truly following the Spirit’s lead (Gal 5:25).

For most Christians, the difficult Scripture verse for today is Galatians 5:24: “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires.” The Lord commands us to accept His grace so we will have crucified flesh, crucified passions, and crucified desires. Although some people believe in toning down the flesh and not following every whim (see Eph 2:3), the idea of “crucified flesh” smacks of extremism and fanaticism to those programmed by our secular humanistic “culture of death.” Here’s where the real Christians stand up. Obey even the difficult verses, live by the Spirit, and follow the Spirit’s lead. Obey Galatians 5:24 and 5:25.

Prayer: Father, send the Spirit to convict the world about sin (Jn 16:8) and to crucify me to the world (Gal 6:14).

Promise: "In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patient endurance, kindness, generosity, faith, mildness, and chastity." —Gal 5:22-23

Praise: St. Hedwig remained faithful to her husband even though she suffered much from his quarrelsomeness.

CLEAN WALLET AND CLEAN HEART
"If you give what you have as alms, all will be wiped clean for you." –Luke 11:41

The Pharisees were avaricious men (Lk 16:14). The word avaricious means “very greedy.” They loved money and power. They did not love people, however. A leading Pharisee invited Jesus to dinner on a Sabbath, and deliberately placed a man suffering from dropsy “directly in front of” Jesus at the table. Dropsy is a painful, bloated condition in which water is retained in the person’s arms and legs. This seating arrangement was a blatant trap set by the Pharisees to bait Jesus into healing on the Sabbath. After Jesus healed the man, He sent the man home (Lk 14:4), which indicates that the suffering man was not invited to partake of the meal, but was merely a pawn used by the Pharisees to entrap the Lord. Jesus loved the man and healed him; the Pharisees did not care about this man, but only about money and power. On another occasion, the Pharisees led a woman caught in adultery to Jesus (Jn 8:3ff). The Pharisees didn't care if this woman were to be killed, as long as she could be used to trap Jesus and preserve their power. Jesus wanted them to love these suffering people, and not love money.

The Pharisees were enslaved to greed and power. Jesus came to set free those who were enslaved (see Lk 4:18). He loved the Pharisees and offered them an opportunity to be truly free from their slavery to greed (see Gal 5:1). So He told them to give what they had as alms, and all would be wiped clean for them (Lk 11:41). They would have known the value of almsgiving from the archangel Raphael’s admonition to Tobit (see Tb 12:8-10), but they needed to take concrete action. For the Pharisees to give alms meant that they could grow more detached from money and begin caring about the poor to whom they were giving the alms.

What about you? Are you tempted to love your money more than you love the poor? Follow Jesus’ advice. Give alms and be wiped clean (Lk 11:41).

Prayer: Jesus, set me free my attachments so I will love You and love the poor and lowly.

Promise: "It was for liberty that Christ freed us. So stand firm, and do not take on yourselves the yoke of slavery a second time!" –Gal 5:1

Praise: St. Teresa of Jesus, from Avila, Spain, prayed daily for the coming of the Holy Spirit in her life.

THE SIGN IS THE LENGTH OF THE LINE
"This is an evil age. It seeks a sign. But no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah." —Luke 11:29

To the Pharisees who wanted a dazzling, miraculous sign, Jesus offered the sign of Jonah (Lk 11:29). What was the sign of Jonah? It was a sign of the Resurrection of Jesus. Jonah was buried in the water in the belly of a large fish, and was delivered safely to land on the third day (Jon 2:1, 11). The sign of Jonah was also the sign of repentance. The entire population of the wicked city of Nineveh, 120,000 people, repented upon hearing the prophetic word of Jonah (Jon 3:4ff).

One of the greatest signs of God’s saving action is a repentant heart. To see 120,000 repentant hearts was a phenomenal sign that was difficult to miss. In Jesus’ time, tax collectors and prostitutes, the most public of sinners, were repenting and turning to the Lord. Nonetheless, the Pharisees missed this sign, even when Jesus pointed it out to them (Mt 21:31).

Perhaps many do not notice the Lord working in the present time because they don’t see people repenting of their sins and changing their lives. If repentant sinners are the sign that could bring people to God (see Lk 15:7), then let’s repent and get in line for Confession. Lengthen the line for Confession by repenting of your sins and inviting others to Confession. Be a sign. “Be earnest about it, therefore. Repent!” (Rv 3:19)

Prayer: Father, create in me a clean heart (Ps 51:12) so that I might be a life-long minister of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18).

Promise: It was for liberty that Christ freed us. So stand firm, and do not take on yourselves the yoke of slavery a second time!" —Gal 5:1

Praise: Pope St. Callistus I was a humble slave. God exalted him (Mt 23:12) and he eventually ascended to the office of Pope. As Pope, Callistus exalted Jesus and vigorously defended His divinity.

"ONE THING"
"There is one thing more you must do." —Mark 10:21

In today’s Gospel passage, a rich man asked what he must do to share in eternal life (Mk 10:17). He had done much, but Jesus told him to do “one thing more” (Mk 10:21). That was the one thing standing between himself and the eternal life he desired. That one thing more was to sell what he possessed, give the proceeds to the poor, and follow Jesus (Mk 10:21). This the rich man could not do and he “went away sad” (Mk 10:22).

Through His Word, God has given us much wisdom (Wis 7:7-11) to know what our one thing might be. It behooves us, then, to be grounded in the Word of God. God’s Word is alive (Heb 4:12). The Word convicts us (Heb 4:12-13) and brings constantly to our mind that one thing more God wants us to yield to Him.

Mary of Bethany found the one thing Jesus wanted her to do: to sit at His feet and listen to His Word (see Lk 10:39). Jesus approved Mary’s action and confirmed it by saying: “one thing only is required” (Lk 10:42).

“One thing I ask of the Lord; this I seek: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, that I may gaze on the loveliness of the Lord and contemplate His temple” (Ps 27:4). Give Jesus that one thing that separates you from following Him completely.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, take not just one thing from me, but take everything. Give me only Your love and Your grace.

Promise: "All gold, in view of [Wisdom], is a little sand, and before her, silver is to be accounted mire." —Wisdom 7:9

Praise: Risen Jesus, praise be to You, my God and my All.

CLOTHES LINES
"All of you who have been baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Him." —Galatians 3:27

Being clothed with Christ means:

  • living “honorably as in daylight” and making “no provision for the desires of the flesh” (Rm 13:13, 14),
  • putting “on that new man created in God’s image, whose justice and holiness are born of truth” (Eph 4:24),
  • being clothed “with power from on high” (Lk 24:49), that is, the Holy Spirit (see Acts 1:8),
  • clothing ourselves “with heartfelt mercy, with kindness, humility, meekness, and patience” (Col 3:12),
  • clothing ourselves with humility in our “relations with one another” (1 Pt 5:5),
  • “putting on faith and love as a breastplate and the hope of salvation as a helmet” (1 Thes 5:8), and
  • putting “on the armor of God” so that we “may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil” (Eph 6:11).

When you were baptized, you were clothed with a baptismal garment to symbolize being clothed with Christ. Have you put on the full clothing and armor of God? Are you living your Baptism to the full?

Prayer: Father, may I "dress for success," that is, eternal life.

Promise: "Blest are they who hear the word of God and keep it." —Lk 11:28

Praise: Warren, a former Protestant minister, and Nora, his wife, left their congregation and converted to the Catholic faith, receiving their First Communion together just before Christ's Christmas coming.

CROSSING STATE LINES
"The result is that the last state of the man is worse than the first." —Luke 11:26

The worst and sometimes last state of a human being is to be repossessed by a devil and newly possessed by several other devils (Lk 11:26). The first step of the road to this worst state is to be possessed by a devil. Most people think that very few people are in the first or last state. However, in the second letter of Peter, the Lord refers to the first state not as the unusual situation of being demon-possessed but as simply our original state, that is, being a human person with our fallen, demonically-influenced nature. We are freed from this first and original state by being baptized and then living our Baptisms “through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Pt 2:20, RSV-CE). Because our Baptisms are irreversible, we can never revert to our first state.

However, we can refuse to live our Baptisms. Thereby we enter a third and worst state of being a fallen-away, lukewarm Christian. When we choose to enter this third state, we make void the cross of Jesus for ourselves (see 1 Cor 1:17), nauseate Jesus (Rv 3:16), cause our Baptisms to backfire, and open the door of our lives to old and new demons. Therefore, we must grow and persevere in our love for the Lord. That is the second and best state, and it should be the last state.

Prayer: Father, may I never love You less.

FIELDS OF FLESH
"After beginning in the Spirit, are you now to end in the flesh?" —Galatians 3:3

The greatest tragedy possible is to end in the flesh. Jesus died and rose to make us new creations. It would be a great tragedy to die still trapped in our fallen nature and refusing the total newness of life in Christ (see 2 Cor 5:17; cf 2 Pt 2:21).

If we die in the flesh, it will probably not be because we rebelled against God shortly before our deaths. Dying in the flesh, instead of dying to the flesh, is a harvest of corruption produced by the sowing and growing of seeds in the field of the flesh (Gal 6:8). Where are you sowing now? What fields are you beginning to cultivate? Are you planted as a couch-potato in front of the TV or addicted to your handheld electronic device? Are you wasting your seed (see Gn 38:9) in masturbation, artificial contraception, pornography, and other forms of lust? Are you sowing your money in consumerism, gambling, and other forms of greed? The fields in which you sow will determine what harvest you reap (see Hos 8:7).

Therefore, “put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the desires of the flesh” (Rm 13:14). Crucify the “flesh with its passions and desires” (Gal 5:24). “You are not to spend what remains of your earthly life on human desires but on the will of God. Already you have devoted enough time to what the pagans enjoy” (1 Pt 4:2-3). Do not live “at the level of the flesh,” but receive God’s mercy (Eph 2:3-4).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, fight against the flesh in my life (Gal 5:17).

Promise: "If you, with all your sins, know how to give your children good things, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?" —Lk 11:13

Praise: Bill returned to weekly Mass after an absence of over ten years because some members of the St. Lawrence Parish Evangelization team cared enough to knock on his door and invite him to join them.

SUBMISSION IS A "SURE THING"
"I went prompted by a revelation, and I laid out for their scrutiny the gospel as I present it." —Galatians 2:2

The Lord commands every Christian to be submissive to God-given authority (Eph 5:21). Wives are to be prime examples of this submission. They are to teach all Christians the peace, joy, freedom, and disciplines of submission (see Eph 5:22).

Submission is not a man-made idea but a gift of God. Thus, God revealed to St. Paul to submit his ministry and preaching to the authority of the leaders of the Jerusalem church (Gal 2:1-2). In Paul’s submission, he received affirmation from the Jerusalem leaders and also “the handclasp of fellowship” (Gal 2:9). Submission leads to affirmation and community. In effect, submission leads to peace and love.

Submission has such good effects not primarily because of the excellence of the people in authority. For example, Cephas, that is, St. Peter, one of the Jerusalem leaders, blundered greatly in Antioch through his duplicity in his relations with Jewish and Gentile Christians (Gal 2:11ff). Submission works because God makes it work even when those in authority don’t work out very well.

Submission is a “sure thing” because God backs up His plans. Be submissive and rejoice.

Prayer: Father, free me from co-dependency and for submission.

Promise: "Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins for we too forgive all who do us wrong." —Lk 11:3-4

Praise: St. Denis and two companions were beheaded for their faith during a persecution of Christians in Paris. Their bodies were thrown into the Seine River and later drawn out of the water by fellow Christians. Praise You, Lord, for immersing and burying our old nature in the waters of Baptism, and drawing us into new life and resurrection with Jesus! St. Denis, pray for us.

HEARING AID
"Mary has chosen the better portion and she shall not be deprived of it." —Luke 10:42

Right now, you are reading this booklet, One Bread, One Body, which focuses on listening to the Lord as He speaks through the Church’s daily Eucharistic Scripture readings. Thank God for you! You are like St. Mary of Bethany. She chose to put aside all else to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to His words (Lk 10:39). With the psalmist, you have said: “I will hear what God proclaims” (Ps 85:9).

Jesus has very good news for you: nothing can separate you from His love (Rm 8:39), and nothing can separate you from listening to Him. If you set aside prime time to choose to listen to Jesus above all else, then you won’t ever be deprived of hearing what He says (Lk 10:42). You’ll hear Him in prayer, and you’ll hear Him when you’re traveling, working, shopping, changing diapers, cooking, etc. You’ll even hear the Lord amid the chaos of loud crowds and confrontations (see Acts 7:56).

Jesus is the Master Communicator. He’ll always find a way to get His message across to you if you want to hear what He’s saying. All He needs is your attention. Choose “the better portion” and listen faithfully to Him (Lk 10:42). He’ll do the rest.

Prayer: Jesus, divine Word sent by the Father, thank You forever for letting me hear Your words. I commit my entire life to You. May I hear every word You speak (Jn 8:47; 18:37).

Promise: "The time came when He Who had set me apart before I was born and called me by His favor chose to reveal His Son to me." —Gal 1:15-16

Praise: St. Luke's parish held a Life in the Spirit Seminar. One of the immediate fruits was deep repentance, as evidenced by the dramatic lengthening of the Confession lines.

THE BOOK OF REVELATIONS
"I assure you, brothers, the gospel I proclaimed to you is no mere human invention. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I schooled in it. It came by revelation from Jesus Christ." —Galatians 1:11-12

We should thank the Lord that we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses for Jesus (Heb 12:1). We thank the Lord for all those who have taught us the faith. We thank Him especially for our parents.

Nevertheless, our faith ultimately depends not on our parents, teachers, pastors, or anyone else. Our faith is not so much a matter of schooling but of the divine “revelation from Jesus Christ” (Gal 1:12). The main question from Jesus to us is not: “Who do other people say that I am?” but “Who do you say that I am?” (see Mt 16:13-15) No one enters His kingdom merely because they are related to His children. It’s not good enough to know those who know God. We ourselves must know God (see Jn 17:3; cf Mt 7:21-23).

Make any changes necessary to put yourself in ideal circumstances for the Lord to keep revealing Himself to you personally. Receive the Sacraments. Pray at a specific time each day. Read daily the teachings of the Church in the Bible, Catechism of the Catholic Church, and from the Magisterium. Try to pray the Mass and receive Jesus in Holy Communion each day or as often as possible. Order your life to maximize your opportunities to receive Jesus’ divine revelation to you.

Prayer: Jesus, may I sit at Your feet and listen to Your words (Lk 10:39).

Promise: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." —Lk 10:27

Praise: Clyde and Rita have five children. They pray a rosary together daily and offer each decade for the welfare of one child.

(We offer four retreats, Oct. 11-20, designed to nourish your spiritual life, deepen your faith, and equip you to be Disciples of Christ. Call 513-373-2397 to register or see www.presentationministries.com for information.)

HOPE CHEST
"Thus the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his earlier ones." —Job 42:12

Job is known for his patience, but he should be better known for his hope. If your ten children died in one day, would you have hope? (see Jb 1:19) If you went bankrupt on the same day, would you let God give you the virtue of hope? (see Jb 1:14ff) If you were diseased and racked with pain, would you be hopeful? (see Jb 2:7) Some would be like Job’s wife and advise you to “curse God and die” (Jb 2:9). However, Job, with no help from his wife and his friends, had hope.

“Hoping against hope” (see Rm 4:18), Job had ten more children (Jb 42:13). His three daughters were the most beautiful women in all the land (Jb 42:15). Moreover, God made him twice as rich as before (Jb 42:10). “Hope will not leave us disappointed” (Rm 5:5).

What about the many people who hope in the Lord but die without the blessings given to Job in his later days? Did these people hope in vain? No! Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life (Jn 11:25). Death does not dash our hopes; instead, it leads to the fulfillment of every hope for those who have hoped in Christ. “They that hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar as with eagles’ wings; they will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint” (Is 40:31).

Prayer: Father, give me hope, especially in the midst of the worst circumstances in my life.

Promise: "Blest are the eyes that see what you see. I tell you, many prophets and kings wished to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it." —Lk 10:23-24

Praise: Bl. Francis Xavier Seelos was a humble Redemptorist priest in New Orleans in the mid 1800s. Numerous miracles of healing are attributed to his intercession, including healing of paralysis and leukemia.

CITY LIGHTS
"He who hears you, hears Me. He who rejects you, rejects Me. And he who rejects Me, rejects Him Who sent Me."—Luke 10:16

Every Christian is called to be a missionary, that is, to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to an unbelieving world. Some missionaries travel around the world, but most stay in one particular city. If we’re called to stay in one city, our task is to bring the kingdom of God to that city.  God “has prepared a city for” you (Heb 11:16), and He has also prepared you for your city.

One day Jesus looked out over the city of Jerusalem and began to mourn and lament. “How often have I wanted to gather your children together as a mother bird collects her young under her wings, and you refused Me!” (Lk 13:34)

Take a good look at the spiritual condition of your city. Let God break your heart for those people in bondage to sins of pride, greed, lust, alcoholism, and drugs. How often Jesus has wanted to gather them to Himself and they refused Him! “But how shall they call on Him in Whom they have not believed? And how can they believe unless they have heard of Him? And how can they hear unless there is someone to preach?” (Rm 10:14)

Jesus tells you: “You are the light of the world” (Mt 5:14). You are also the light of your city! Accept Jesus’ call to go out into the “byroads” of your city and invite everyone you meet to come to the Lord (Mt 22:9).

Prayer: Lord, have mercy on my city. Use me to bring Your kingdom on earth as it is in heaven (Mt 6:10).

Promise: "Where can I go from Your Spirit? From Your presence where can I flee? If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I sink to the nether world, You are present there." —Ps 139:7-8

Praise: Jesus spoke to St. Francis and told him to "Rebuild My Church." Despite initially misunderstanding the Lord's intent, Francis spent the rest of his life fulfilling God's command.

A WONDER: WORKERS!
"The harvest is rich but the workers are few; therefore ask the Harvest-Master to send workers to His harvest." —Luke 10:2

Job was one of the Lord’s most faithful workers. The Lord permitted Satan to take away almost all of Job’s riches, kill his ten children, and give Job a life-threatening, painful disease (Jb 1:12ff). Even if the Lord later gave Job twice as much as he had lost (Jb 42:10), no wonder the Lord’s workers are few (Lk 10:2).

The Lord sends out His workers “as lambs in the midst of wolves” (Lk 10:3). He tells them to take nothing with them and to live from moment to moment, trusting Him for everything (Lk 10:4). No wonder the Lord’s workers are few.

The crucified Lord promised us that we, His disciples and co-workers (1 Cor 3:9), would be persecuted as He was persecuted (Jn 15:20; 2 Tm 3:12; Mt 5:11). Under these conditions, no wonder few are willing to work.

Now Jesus is asking each of us to work for Him. He will reward us with the eternal happiness of heaven (see 2 Tm 4:8), but He doesn’t put that much emphasis on it. He mostly talks about the cross. This ensures that each of us decides to work for Jesus out of love for Him. A wonder: workers for His harvest!

Prayer: Father, may love impel me to work for You (see 2 Cor 5:14).

Promise: "I believe that I shall see the bounty of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord." —Ps 27:13-14

Praise: Todd's ulcer was healed when he forgave his father.

GUARDING ATTACKERS
"See that you never despise one of these little ones. I assure you, their angels in heaven constantly behold My heavenly Father's face." —Matthew 18:10

Guardian angels don’t just guard us. They are very specialized guards. They don’t so much guard us from attacking enemies as much as they guard us when attacking enemies. Guardian angels have the job of guarding us as we attack the gates of hell (Mt 16:18). They guard us “on the way” to war and then in war (Ex 23:20). Their job is not so much to protect us from our enemies but to wipe out our enemies (Ex 23:23).

We as Christians are called to be militant — not in physical violence but in spiritual warfare (see Eph 6:12). We are to turn the world right side up (see Acts 17:6) and be a force to be reckoned with. When we fight this good fight (see 2 Tm 4:7), we need this specialized type of guard duty from the guardian angels. However, if we aren’t militantly attacking the gates of hell, our guardian angels are underemployed.

If you want to see your guardian angel at work, then fight for the Kingdom of God against the kingdom of darkness.

Prayer: Father, make me such a threat to the kingdom of darkness that I will need my guardian angel.

Promise: "Unless you change and become like little children, you will not enter the kingdom of God." —Mt 18:3

Praise: Teenage Wally asks his guardian angel for protection each time he drives a car.
