WORD-WORK
"A man scatters seed on the ground. He goes to bed and gets up day after day. Through it all the seed sprouts and grows without his knowing how it happens." —Mark 4:26-27

Does God’s Word work? Does faith truly come through hearing and then hearing comes by the Word of God? (Rm 10:17) Is God’s Word living and effective? (Heb 4:12) If so, then why is the world in its present shape despite all the preachers, churches, and Bibles?

God’s answer to these most important questions is that, as rain and snow always accomplish their purposes, so His Word shall not return to Him void. His Word shall do His will, achieving the end for which He sent it (see Is 55:10-11). God’s Word works! “There is no chaining the word of God!” (2 Tm 2:9)

However, the messengers of God’s Word can be chained through lack of faith. Sharing God’s Word is like sowing seed. We often don’t see any immediate effects of our work (see Mk 4:26ff). Even when we do see some results, they are often as tiny as a mustard seed (see Mk 4:31). To persevere in sharing God’s Word, we must sow by faith and not by sight (see 2 Cor 5:7). “We are not among those who draw back and perish, but among those who have faith and live” (Heb 10:39). Work in faith and give God’s Word a chance to work.

Prayer: Father, may I have confident assurance concerning what I hope for and conviction about things I do not see (Heb 11:1).

Promise: "Do not, then, surrender your confidence; it will have great reward. You need patience to do God's will and receive what He has promised." —Heb 10:35-36

Praise: St. John Bosco, a powerfully gifted minister to youth, required kindness in all his fellow youth ministers. He said: "The young should know that they are loved."

I-SOLATED
"We should not absent ourselves from the assembly, as some do." —Hebrews 10:25

The writer to the Hebrews says we should have “utter sincerity,” “absolute confidence,” clean hearts, and an unswerving profession (Heb 10:22-23). Does that discourage you? When we see God’s expectations together with our weaknesses, it can seem overwhelming. Nonetheless, the Lord will do the job, and all we need do is let it be done to us according to His Word (Lk 1:38).

The Lord will use every circumstance to bring us into His full holiness. He will especially use other Christians. Thus we should “encourage one another” (Heb 10:25). “We must consider how to rouse each other to love and good deeds” (Heb 10:24). We must assemble to rouse, bless, love, heal, and serve each other, because the devil can easily defeat a one-man army. A stray sheep is easy pickings. The disconnected member of the body has limited power. Jesus constantly calls us together while Satan tries to scatter us (see Jn 10:10).

When you’re having hard times, did you ever notice how the devil tries to take away your interest in fellowship? Don’t fall for it. When you don’t feel like being with other Christians, that is when you need your Christian brothers and sisters more than ever. “Where a lone man may be overcome, two together can resist. A three-ply cord is not easily broken” (Eccl 4:12).

Prayer: Father, make me a family man or woman. May my "I," "my," and "me" change to "we," "our," and "us."

Promise: "In the measure you give you shall receive, and more besides." —Mk 4:24

Praise: Tired and weary after working all day to provide for his family, David saw God give him strength and energy to lead and inspire a large group of teens during a weekly youth meeting.

THE ONE WHO BECAME SIN (2 Cor 5:21)
"There is no further offering for sin." —Hebrews 10:18

Priest after priest ministered day after day and offered “again and again those same sacrifices which can never take away sins” (Heb 10:11). Countless priests spent centuries offering hundreds of thousands of animals to take away sin. At the end of it all they were no closer to taking away sins than when they started.

“But Jesus offered one sacrifice for sins” (Heb 10:12). “By one offering He has forever perfected those who are being sanctified” (Heb 10:14). Jesus did what the whole world could not do. Jesus accomplished at the moment of His death what could never have been done in all the time in the world. One drop of Jesus’ blood achieved what could never have been done by rivers of blood from sacrificing animals.

Therefore, let us totally give our lives to Jesus and accept Him as our Savior from sin (see Ti 3:4-5). Let us thank Jesus always and forever for His saving death. Let us go to Confession frequently and apply the blood of Jesus to our sins. Let us tell a sinful world that Jesus is “an Offering for our sins, and not for our sins only, but for those of the whole world” (1 Jn 2:2).

Prayer: Father, I rejoice in "the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world!" (Jn 1:29)

Promise: "Those sown on good soil are the ones who listen to the word, take it to heart, and yield at thirty- and sixty- and a hundredfold." —Mk 4:20

Praise: Jesus healed Ramon of terminal cancer of the esophagus.

LOVE-LIFE
"Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to Me." —Mark 3:35

God is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16). He made us in His image, in the image of Love (Gn 1:27). Therefore, we are made for love and are automatically looking for love. So we are happy if we know we are loved, but are brokenhearted if we think we are not loved.

Because of His love for us, the Lord wants us to abide in Love and in Him (1 Jn 4:16). Therefore, He became a man, died on the cross for love of us, and rose from the dead for love of us (see Phil 2:6-9). Thus He has given us an intimacy with Him which is beyond human words and ideas. God the Father has even adopted us as His sons and daughters (Eph 1:5). If we do His will, we become Jesus’ mothers, brothers, and sisters (Mk 3:35). Jesus loves us so much that He gives us His Body and Blood in Holy Communion. He will come back to take us to be with Him in the everlasting love of heaven.

The Lord cannot love us any more than He does. His love for us is infinite, perfect, unconditional, crucified, and eternal. The purpose of our lives is to enter into and live in God’s love and “be able to grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ’s love, and experience this love” (Eph 3:18-19).

Live in love (Jn 15:9-10). Be yourself. Be happy. Live in God forever.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to produce in me the fruit of love (Gal 5:22).

Promise: "I have come to do Your will, O God." —Heb 10:7

Praise: St. Thomas, perhaps the wisest and most prolific teacher in Church history, was praying before a crucifix near the end of his life. A voice asked Thomas what he wanted as the reward for all of his service to God. Thomas answered: "None but Yourself, O Lord."

JESUS SAVES US
Jesus "entered heaven itself that He might appear before God now on our behalf." —Hebrews 9:24

If we had sinned only once, and if that lone sin was the most seemingly innocuous sin, we are still guilty of breaking God’s entire law (Jas 2:10). How could we then, with all our sins, ever get back into God’s good graces? Nothing we could do would ever satisfy, make up for, atone, or expiate that one sin, let alone all our sins. We have all sinned and are deprived of the glory of God (Rm 3:23). We are in danger of dying in our sins (Jn 8:21, 24) and suffering eternal condemnation in the fires of hell (Mt 25:41). Moreover, we cannot save ourselves (Ps 49:8ff; Is 26:18). This is bad news indeed.

There is Good News. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rm 5:8). He entered heaven on our behalf, for you and for me. He brought His own blood, shed for our sins, before Almighty God to satisfy, make up for, atone, and expiate each of our sins (Heb 9:24ff). He didn’t wait until we repented or even understood the damage our sins caused. He loved us first (1 Jn 4:19). We have only to repent, believe that Jesus loves us this much, go to Confession, and offer our lives to Him in return. “Now that we have been justified by His blood, it is all the more certain that we shall be saved by Him” (Rm 5:9).

Repent! Believe in Jesus’ saving love for you. Receive His forgiveness and salvation. Then go and sin no more (Jn 8:11). Live as His disciple and make disciples of all the nations (Mt 28:19).

Prayer: Father, may I think of Jesus crucified when tempted to sin.

Promise: "Christ was offered once to take away the sins of many; He will appear a second time not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him." —Heb 9:28

Praise: St. Angela's coworkers in charity became a new congregation, the Ursulines. Many young girls have heard and responded to the Gospel through their ministry.

GUESS WHAT HAPPENED AT CHURCH TODAY?
"...entering the synagogue on the sabbath as He was in the habit of doing..." —Luke 4:16

Jesus had habitually entered the synagogue on the sabbath to worship God (Lk 4:16). Then, on one special sabbath day, the time “of favor” came (Lk 4:19). On that day, the Holy Spirit anointed Jesus and sent Him forth, Scriptures were fulfilled, Jesus prophesied in power, and was nearly killed (Lk 4:23ff).

Since Jesus is the same today as He was then (Heb 13:8), He is working in power today, His day, the Lord’s Day. Therefore, we should never be comfortable or complacent walking into Church. Rather, we should approach “the liturgy of the Lord” (Acts 13:2) with trembling, anticipation, reverence, and awe. At any moment, in any Mass, the Spirit may explode and an international, earthshaking ministry could be born (see Lk 4:18; Acts 13:2). Great healings (Acts 20:7-12) or life-changing revelations (Lk 24:30-32) might occur. Miracles will occur, as bread and wine are being transformed into the Body and Blood of Jesus, Who is God. The proclaimed Scriptures will be fulfilled in the lives of many today as Jesus comes alive in their hearts and sets them free (Lk 4:18; Jn 8:32).

Today is the Lord’s Day, “the first of all days” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2174). “Today is holy to the Lord” (Neh 8:9). Today the Holy Spirit anoints you (Lk 4:18). Expect today’s Mass to be charged with power as Jesus makes all things new (Rv 21:5) — today.

Prayer: Jesus, may I never be so "familiar" with You that I become like the people of Nazareth and fail to see You as God.

Promise: "You, then, are the body of Christ. Every one of you is a member of it." —1 Cor 12:27

Praise: Risen Jesus, we exalt You. King of kings (Rv 17:14), we praise and worship You. Be glorified forever.

“NOW ALL IS NEW!” (2 Cor 5:17) - One Bread, One Body, 01/25/2025

"NOW ALL IS NEW!" (2 Cor 5:17)
"The men who were traveling with [Saul] stood there speechless." —Acts 9:7

The conversion of St. Paul is so spectacular, so sudden, and so unexpected that it leaves us awestruck at the sovereign majesty and converting power of the Lord Jesus. Because of the incomprehensible power of Jesus to convert even the worst of sinners like St. Paul (1 Tm 1:15), each one of us “shall stand speechless” in the sight of God (Is 52:15). “Nothing is impossible with God” (Lk 1:37). Therefore, today’s feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul is a sign of great hope for us (see 1 Pt 1:3).

The conversion of St. Paul is so important that it is recorded three times in the Acts of the Apostles. Possibly you have long been praying for the conversion of loved ones, family members, or leaders. I encourage you to read and pray Paul’s conversion accounts for the conversion of someone whom you struggle to imagine could ever convert. For example, if you are praying for three people to come to faith in Jesus, pray Acts 9:1-22 for one person, pray Acts 22:3-16 for the second person, and pray Acts 26:1-23 for the conversion of the third.

Jesus has come that all might be saved (1 Tm 2:4). Believe in His converting power. St. Paul, pray for us and all those in need of conversion.

Prayer: "Those things I used to consider gain I have now reappraised as loss in the light of Christ. I have come to rate all as loss in the light of the surpassing knowledge of my Lord Jesus Christ" (Phil 3:7-8).

Promise: "Saul for his part grew steadily more powerful, and reduced the Jewish community of Damascus to silence with his proofs that this Jesus was the Messiah." —Acts 9:22

Praise: Jesus temporarily blinded St. Paul to enable him to open the eyes of the Gentiles and turn them from darkness to light, and to God, to obtain forgiveness of their sins (see Acts 26:16-18).

Cotton Canvas: A Comprehensive Guide for Crafters, DIYers, and Textile Enthusiasts

Cotton canvas: the workhorse of the crafting and DIY world. From sturdy tote bags to breathtaking painted artworks, its versatility and durability have made it a staple in workshops and studios for centuries. But beyond its readily apparent applications, cotton canvas holds a wealth of fascinating characteristics and possibilities. This comprehensive guide delves deep into the world of cotton canvas, exploring its properties, uses, types, history, and more, all tailored for the discerning crafter, DIY enthusiast, and textile aficionado.

What is Cotton Canvas? A Material Defined by Weave and Fiber

At its core, cotton canvas is a plain-woven fabric made from cotton fibers. The term "canvas" refers specifically to the weave – a tightly interlaced, balanced weave that provides inherent strength and stability. The combination of the natural cotton fiber and the plain weave structure gives canvas its unique properties:

  • Durability: The tight weave creates a strong fabric that can withstand significant wear and tear, making it ideal for projects that need to last.

  • Absorbency: Cotton is a naturally absorbent fiber, allowing canvas to readily accept dyes, paints, and other finishes. This is critical for customization in crafting and artistic applications.

  • Versatility: Canvas comes in various weights, textures, and finishes, making it suitable for a wide range of projects, from lightweight apparel to heavy-duty outdoor gear.

  • Breathability: Cotton fibers allow air to circulate through the fabric, making canvas comfortable to wear and use in warm environments.

  • Affordability: Compared to other durable fabrics like linen or leather, cotton canvas is relatively inexpensive, making it accessible for crafters on a budget.

  • Ease of Use: Cotton canvas is generally easy to cut, sew, and manipulate, making it a forgiving material for beginner and experienced crafters alike.

Unraveling the Weave: Understanding Canvas Construction

The strength and properties of cotton canvas are largely determined by its construction:

  • Weave Type: The most common weave for canvas is the plain weave, where warp (lengthwise) and weft (crosswise) yarns interlace in a simple over-under pattern. Other weaves, like twill, can also be used, resulting in a more textured and potentially more durable canvas.

  • Yarn Size (Weight): Canvas weight is typically measured in ounces per square yard (oz/yd²). Heavier canvases (e.g., 12 oz, 18 oz) are thicker, stronger, and more rigid, suitable for heavy-duty applications. Lighter canvases (e.g., 7 oz, 10 oz) are more pliable and suitable for garments or lining.

  • Thread Count: While less commonly specified for canvas than for other fabrics, thread count (number of threads per inch) can also influence the fabric's density and durability. A higher thread count generally indicates a tighter weave and greater resistance to tearing.

  • Ply: Refers to the number of yarns twisted together to make a single thread. Multiple-ply yarns create a stronger and more durable fabric.

Canvas Varieties: Exploring the Spectrum of Textures and Finishes

Cotton canvas isn't a monolithic material. A wide range of varieties cater to specific needs and applications:

  • Duck Canvas: The most common type of cotton canvas, characterized by its tightly woven plain weave. Duck canvas is graded by a numbered system (e.g., #8 duck, #10 duck), with lower numbers indicating heavier weights. It is incredibly versatile and used for everything from tote bags and upholstery to tarpaulins and tents.

  • Artist Canvas: Specifically designed for painting, artist canvas is typically primed with gesso to create a smooth, absorbent surface that is ready to accept paint. Available in various weights and textures, it is often stretched over a wooden frame for painting.

  • Cotton Drill: A strong, twill-woven fabric that is similar to canvas but generally lighter in weight. Drill is often used for workwear, linings, and durable clothing.

  • Cotton Twill: As mentioned, a twill weave creates a diagonal rib pattern on the fabric's surface. Twill canvas is often more flexible and drapable than plain-weave canvas.

  • Water-Resistant Canvas: Treated with a water-repellent finish (e.g., wax, silicone), this type of canvas is ideal for outdoor applications like awnings, boat covers, and tents. The water-repellency needs to be maintained with retreatment over time.

  • Flame-Retardant Canvas: Treated with flame-retardant chemicals, this canvas is suitable for applications where fire safety is a concern, such as stage curtains, backdrops, and safety clothing.

  • Organic Cotton Canvas: Made from cotton grown without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. This is a more sustainable option for environmentally conscious crafters.

  • Recycled Cotton Canvas: Made from recycled cotton fibers, reducing waste and conserving resources.

Beyond the Bolt: Common Uses for Cotton Canvas

The versatility of cotton canvas makes it a go-to material for a vast array of projects:

  • Crafting & Sewing: Tote bags, pouches, aprons, placemats, curtains, pillow covers, wall hangings, stuffed animals.

  • Art & Painting: Painting canvases, backdrops, murals.

  • Home Decor: Upholstery, slipcovers, curtains, rugs, storage bins.

  • Outdoor Gear: Tents, awnings, boat covers, backpacks, tarpaulins.

  • Apparel: Jackets, pants, skirts, dresses, hats, workwear.

  • Shoes: Canvas sneakers, espadrilles.

  • Photography & Event Decor: Photography backdrops, pipe and drape systems for booths and events.

Choosing the Right Canvas: A Project-Specific Guide

Selecting the appropriate canvas for your project is crucial for achieving the desired results:

  • For Tote Bags: A medium-weight duck canvas (10-12 oz) is a good balance of durability and ease of sewing. Consider a heavier weight (14-18 oz) for bags that will carry heavy loads.

  • For Painting: Artist canvas primed with gesso is essential. Choose a weight and texture based on your painting style. Finer textures are good for detailed work, while coarser textures are suitable for looser styles.

  • For Upholstery: A heavy-weight duck canvas (12-18 oz) or a cotton drill is recommended for durability. Consider a stain-resistant finish for added protection.

  • For Clothing: A lighter-weight canvas (7-10 oz) or a cotton twill will be more comfortable to wear.

  • For Outdoor Projects: A water-resistant canvas is a must. Consider the level of water resistance needed based on the project's exposure to the elements.

  • For Photography Backdrops: Muslin is also used for backdrops, however cotton canvas in a plain color or painted canvas can add character and is generally durable. Using pipe and drape to set up the photography backdrops can be an efficient means.

Working with Cotton Canvas: Tips and Techniques for Crafters

While generally easy to work with, cotton canvas benefits from a few key techniques:

  • Pre-Washing: Pre-wash canvas before cutting and sewing to prevent shrinkage after the project is complete.

  • Needle Selection: Use a universal or denim needle in your sewing machine. The size of the needle will depend on the weight of the canvas.

  • Thread Choice: Choose a strong, durable thread like polyester or cotton-wrapped polyester.

  • Seam Finishes: Finish raw edges to prevent fraying. Options include serging, zigzag stitching, or binding with bias tape.

  • Reinforcements: Reinforce stress points with extra stitching or rivets.

  • Cutting: Use sharp fabric scissors or a rotary cutter for clean, accurate cuts.

  • Pressing: Press seams open after sewing for a professional finish.

"THE KILLING FIELDS"
Jesus "went up the mountain and summoned the men He Himself had decided on, who came and joined Him." —Mark 3:13

In the USA, this week is the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s legalization of abortion in 1973. This decision legalized millions of serial killings. Thankfully, this decision was overturned a few years ago at the federal level, but its diabolical ideas continue powerfully today in our culture of death.

However, there is hope, because there is Jesus. Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life (Jn 14:6), has already conquered death (see Rm 6:9). We must commit ourselves to the “new covenant” of Jesus (see Heb 8:8; Jer 31:31ff). We must live our Baptisms as fully active members of the Body of Christ, the Church. We are members of the Church that has been given the “authority to expel demons” and to “preach the good news” of Jesus (Mk 3:14-15). By obedience to the Lord — especially to His call to pray and fast (Mt 17:21, NAB) — we will displace our culture of death with a civilization of love and life. There is hope in Jesus and only in Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may I die to myself to save lives and to lead others to You.

Promise: "Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven." —Ps 85:12

Praise: St. Francis de Sales said: "I would rather give an account to God for too great gentleness than for too great severity."

GREAT EXPECTATIONS
"A great crowd followed Him...because they had heard what He had done." —Mark 3:7-8

The demons recognize Jesus (Mk 3:11), but they don’t accept Him. The demons want more of the same — to keep those whom they are oppressing from asking Jesus for freedom. The Pharisees likewise didn’t accept Jesus (see Jn 1:11), although they might not have recognized Him, despite all the evidence He provided. They wanted a Messiah, but not Jesus, Who brought a “more excellent ministry” than what they expected (Heb 8:6). They weren’t looking for something better; they wanted more of the same — to preserve their power, status, and wealth. The crowds trusted Jesus and accepted Him, at least at this point in His public ministry. They expected healings and miracles, and they followed Jesus with great expectations.

What do you expect from God? What do you hope for from Him? Whatever your hopes, Jesus has “more excellent” plans than you could ever ask for or imagine (Heb 8:6; Eph 3:20). Will those plans be “too much” for you? (Mk 6:3) What will you do then? Will you reject Him or dismiss Him?

Ask Jesus for the grace to accept Him. God has been pouring out His grace like a torrential downpour. Repent of any refusal or hesitation to receive His grace. “No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except in the Holy Spirit” (1 Cor 12:3). Repent of stifling the Spirit in any way. The grace of God is poured out through the Holy Spirit (Ti 3:4-6). Expect the Holy Spirit to do great things.

Prayer: Father, may I never regard You as a weak God. Raise my expectations to be worthy of Your all-powerful and loving majesty.

Promise: "Jesus has obtained a more excellent ministry now...founded on better promises." —Heb 8:6

Praise: In his martyrdom, St. Vincent endured much torture rather than deny the Lord. His jailer was so moved by Vincent's peace amid torture that he repented of his sins and converted to the Faith.

SHRIVELED? - One Bread, One Body, 01/22/2025

SHRIVELED?
"He addressed the man with the shriveled hand: 'Stand up here in front!' " —Mark 3:3

Is any part of your life shriveled, withered, atrophied? Are you exercising your spiritual muscles, or are they atrophied because of non-use? Do you use the power given by your Baptism to evangelize, heal, free, and feed the broken, starving masses? Jesus wants to heal you. He wants every part of His Body and of our bodies and spirits to work properly (see 1 Cor 12:12-26).

Perhaps your ability to produce children is atrophied through the shriveling effects of artificial contraception, sterilization, or abortion. Jesus wants every part of your body to work so that every part of His Body can work (see Eph 4:16). Jesus calls you to come to Him and stand up in front of Him (Mk 3:3). He plans to undo the shriveling and withering, and use your reproductive system, body, spirit, and soul as He wills.

Many other shriveled people, and especially Satan himself, do not want you healed. By faith in Jesus, however, “stretch out your hand” (Mk 3:5). Put the shriveled parts of your life, and your entire life, in Jesus’ hands.

Prayer: Jesus, straighten out every area of my life.

Promise: Jesus "said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' The man did so and his hand was perfectly restored." —Mk 3:5

Praise: Ralph awoke with a terrible headache and couldn't see out of one eye. After attending Sunday Mass, his wife urged him to approach his priest for prayer. His priest prayed for him right on the street outside the church. A moment later, Jesus restored his sight and the headache vanished.

NEVER LOSING BY NEVER LOSING HOPE - One Bread, One Body, 01/21/2025

NEVER LOSING BY NEVER LOSING HOPE
"Like a sure and firm anchor, that hope extends beyond the veil." —Hebrews 6:19

In the Christian life, the old saying is true: “All’s well that ends well.” Some people are like the good thief who probably lived a terribly sinful life but repented moments before his death (Lk 23:42-43). Others may be like Judas Iscariot, who spent every day with Jesus for three years, but in the end betrayed Christ and committed suicide (Mt 27:5).

Will each of us persevere in our faith? “Our desire is that each of you show the same zeal to the end” (Heb 6:11). We persevere because we hope. “In hope we were saved” (Rm 8:24). The Lord gives us hope by His promise and His oath (Heb 6:13, 16). “By two things that are unchangeable, in which He could not lie, we who have taken refuge in Him might be strongly encouraged to seize the hope which is placed before us” (Heb 6:18). Not only does faith come through hearing God’s Word (see Rm 10:17) but also hope comes by believing God’s Word. Believing God’s promise and oath, we hold on to hope and refuse to let go until we are home in heaven with our Lord forever. We persevere because we “hope so.” “Seize the hope” (Heb 6:18).

Prayer: Father, fulfill my hopes by pouring out Your love in my heart through the Holy Spirit (Rm 5:5).

Promise: "I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart in the company and assembly of the just." —Ps 111:1

Praise: St. Agnes asked her executioner to hurry up and put her to death for Jesus. She didn't want to insult Jesus by prolonging the opportunity for sin.

PUNCHING BAG
"On that day they will fast." —Mark 2:20

Many years ago there was an expression: “He couldn’t punch his way out of a wet paper bag.” This was a way of calling someone a weakling.

People questioned why Jesus’ disciples did not fast. Jesus answered that the fasting by His disciples would be so powerful and extreme that their lives wouldn’t be able to endure the effects of it. It would be like pouring fermenting, volatile new wine into an old wineskin (Mk 2:22). Only after Jesus’ death, Resurrection, and Ascension into heaven culminating in Pentecost would His disciples have the life and lifestyle to contain the explosiveness of New Testament fasting.

  • Do you fast?
  • Do you fast at least weekly?
  • Do you believe that prayer and fasting are the first and most effective weapons against the forces of evil? (Gospel of Life, Pope St. John Paul II, 100; cf Mt 17:21, NAB)
  • How much punch, wallop, and explosive power does your fasting have?
  • Can you fast your way out of a wet paper bag? Can you fast your way out of a culture of death?

Fast and you shall receive.

Prayer: Father, teach me and empower me to fast explosively

Promise: "He became the Source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him." —Heb 5:9

Praise: Pope St. Fabian condemned heresy even to the point of giving his life for the Lord in martyrdom.

ON EMPTY?
"The wine ran out, and Jesus' mother told Him, 'They have no more wine.' " —John 2:3

In John’s Gospel, Jesus began His public ministry at a wedding feast where they had “no more wine.” Likewise, many people begin to let Jesus work in their lives when they realize they are out of wine, love, strength, energy, ideas, or hope. In the weakness of our emptiness, God’s power in us can reach perfection (2 Cor 12:9).

It is literally true that without Jesus we can do nothing (Jn 15:5). Of ourselves, we are always on “empty” in the important things in life. Life is an impossible situation. This gradually or at least eventually becomes obvious. We are doomed to despair. Who can save us? (see Rm 7:24)

Jesus alone is our Savior. “There is no salvation in anyone else, for there is no other name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be saved” (Acts 4:12). So the most important thing in life is to give our lives and our emptiness totally to Jesus. We must take Mary’s advice and do whatever Jesus tells us (Jn 2:5). Jesus is our only Hope.

We live in hope in His lordship over our lives. We express this hope through our obedience to Him. He will take us from our emptiness to the fullness of the wedding feast of heaven (see Rv 19:7). Thank You, Jesus!

Prayer: Father, I rejoice that "absolute fullness" resides in Jesus (Col 1:19).

Promise: "For Zion's sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her vindication shines forth like the dawn and her victory like a burning torch." —Is 62:1

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, the Resurrection and the Life! (Jn 11:25) I rejoice in You forever!

COME IN, JESUS
"Why does He eat with such as these?" —Mark 2:16

First of all, Jesus is with us. He is Emmanuel, God-with-us (Mt 1:23; 28:20). At the Doxology of the Mass, the priest prays “through Him, with Him, and in Him.” Jesus is with us. We live with Him. Jesus comes to be with sinners, the sick, and the outcast. Although He calls us to work in His service, He primarily comes to be with us, to have fellowship with us, to share His life with us. He knocks at our door (Rv 3:20), for He greatly desires to share table fellowship with us (Lk 22:15).

Jesus came from heaven to earth to be with us and share His life with us, so that we could be in His presence. The Creator of the Universe, the King of Heaven and Earth, delights in you. He wants to spend eternity with you. He is knocking at your door (Rv 3:20). “Think!” (Dt 10:14) God Himself wants to dwell with you! Moreover, you don’t have to pass a difficult test, go through years of schooling, know profound religious insights, etc. All you have to do is roll out the welcome mat, open the door to His knocking, and let Jesus in.

Jesus counts us “worthy to be in His presence” (2nd Eucharistic prayer). Accept His offer to share His life with you. All are welcome in God’s house. Make Him welcome in yours.

Prayer: Lord, we give "thanks that You have held us worthy to be in Your presence and minister to You." I welcome You into my home. Thank You for wanting to share Your life with me.

Promise: "Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and favor and to find help in time of need." —Heb 4:16

Praise: Jesus healed young Larry of asthma.

MONTHLY CONFESSION
" 'That you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins' (He said to the paralyzed man), 'I command you: Stand up! Pick up your mat and go home.' " —Mark 2:10-11

Although many Christians give lip-service to Jesus’ authority to forgive sins, how many of us truly appreciate it? We need Jesus to confirm it for us by healing the paralyzed (Mk 2:10-11).

If you don’t go to Confession at least monthly, I ask you to consider starting to go to monthly Confession. If you are unwilling to do this, I challenge you to ask Jesus to confirm that the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is a tremendous gift, and that frequent Confession is very important to becoming holy as He is holy (1 Pt 1:15-16).

Some of you will see God work signs and wonders, and will go to monthly Confession till the end of your life. Some of you will see God work in less dramatic ways, but you’ll know He’s talking to you, waiting for you to say “Yes.” The Lord will do almost anything to lead us to repentance. He even became a Man, was nailed to a cross, shed His blood, and died (see Phil 2:6-8). What more could He do!

Jesus will be glad to confirm His call to repentance and Confession with “cures and signs and wonders” (Acts 4:30). Then “there will likewise be more joy in heaven over one repentant sinner” (Lk 15:7).

Prayer: Jesus, may I go to Confession as often as You want me to attend.

Promise: "The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." —Mk 2:10

Praise: St. Anthony the Abbot took to heart the Scripture passage, "Do not be anxious about tomorrow" (Mt 6:34, RSV-CE). He gave away the little he had not yet given to the poor.

CASUAL DISOBEDIENCE
"Oh, that today you would hear His voice: 'Harden not your hearts.' " —Psalm 95:7-8

Jesus miraculously and instantaneously healed a leper and then gave him a stern warning not to tell anyone (Mk 1:43-44). The man promptly and completely disobeyed Jesus and began to publicize the whole matter (Mk 1:45). This casual attitude toward disobedience has been the curse of the human race from Adam and Eve onward throughout human history.

All of us recognize this casual attitude toward disobedience in other people. We chide or condemn those who disobey in areas where we may be obeying. Nonetheless, we probably harbor a casual attitude toward disobedience in our own ways (see Mt 7:3). For example, do we obey the Lord by taking up our daily cross (Lk 9:23), submitting to authority in lawful matters, sacrificing, telling the truth, avoiding occasions of sin, or evangelizing? These commandments are not options, but they are widely ignored.

The fact that the majority of Catholics in the Western world miss Mass on Sundays is symptomatic of a culture of rebellion. The fact that so many contracept shows that we don’t just have a problem but a whole culture of death.

When our obedience is complete, however, we have the authority to bring down Satan’s strongholds and make every thought captive to Christ (2 Cor 10:4-6). Otherwise, we are trapped in disobedience. For God’s sake, and for your own sake, obey!

Prayer: Father, teach me obedience, even through suffering if necessary (see Heb 5:8).

Promise: "Encourage one another daily while it is still 'today,' so that no one grows hardened by the deceit of sin." —Heb 3:13

LORD OF OUR DARKNESS
"As evening drew on, they brought Him all who were ill, and those possessed by demons." —Mark 1:32

In today’s Gospel, Jesus heals in the evening, in the midst of the darkness (Mk 1:32-34). Jesus entered the darkness to drive the demons out of the darkness. “A people living in darkness has seen a great light. On those who inhabit a land overshadowed by death, light has arisen” (Mt 4:16).

In today’s first reading, Jesus enters the darkness of our fallen human state (Heb 2:14ff). He became one of us. The Almighty God, Whom the universe could not contain (1 Kgs 8:27), became “like His brothers in every way, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest before God on their behalf, to expiate the sins of the people. Since He was Himself tested through what He suffered, He is able to help those who are tempted” (Heb 2:17-18).

Jesus took on our human condition. He bears our afflictions and infirmities (Mt 8:17; Is 53:4). He takes the initiative to come to us not in our strength and beauty, but in our weakness and darkness. Have you ever felt unworthy of God’s love? You are not unworthy to Jesus. He came to seek and save the lost (Lk 19:10). He is the Lamb of God, gentle, innocent, and pure, yet He comes to take away the sins of the world, including yours (Jn 1:29).

Jesus stands and knocks at the door of your darkness (Rv 3:20). “Open wide your hearts!” (2 Cor 6:13) Let the Lord enter.

Prayer: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, nothing can separate me from Your love, not even the darkness (Rm 8:35-39). Come into my heart right now.

Promise: "Jesus likewise had a full share in [our humanity], that by His death He might rob the devil, the prince of death, of his power." —Heb 2:14

Praise: After two leaders of a prayer group reconciled with each other, God blessed them with a new fruitfulness by sending new members.

ORDERED TIME
"Have You come to destroy?" —Mark 1:24

The Church has now entered the season of Ordinary Time. A more precise meaning would be “Ordered Time,” for this season of the Church Year is marked by godly order as opposed to ordinary, mundane activity. Today’s Gospel shows the impact of God’s order coming into a situation. A man in the synagogue is possessed by a demon (Mk 1:23). His life is disordered rather than ordered under the freedom of the children of God. Jesus casts out the demon and sets this man free. This is no “ordinary” worship service! This man’s life is now under the order of God instead of the possession of Satan.

The demons ask Jesus: “Have You come to destroy us?” (Mk 1:24) The answer is a resounding “Yes!” “It was to destroy the devil’s works that the Son of God revealed Himself” (1 Jn 3:8). Jesus came to destroy the godless secular culture, sin, death, fear, injustice, hatred, the kingdom of darkness, and all that opposes the reign of God in this world. Jesus destroys so that the foundation site can be cleared to build what will last. Jesus is a Carpenter (see Mt 13:55), and He knows that a house cannot be built on a disordered foundation (see Mt 7:24-27).

In this season of Ordinary Time, cooperate with Jesus as He destroys and builds. Clear out of your life whatever is opposed to God’s order. Allow Jesus to destroy whatever He wishes. Be still, and know that He is God (see Ps 46:10, RSV-CE).

Prayer: Father, thank You for loving me so much that You send a "Master-Builder" (1 Cor 3:10) to remodel my life. Do in me whatever You must in order to do through me whatever You will.

Promise: "A completely new teaching in a spirit of authority! He gives orders to unclean spirits and they obey!" —Mk 1:27

Praise: Marcia stayed away from Mass for years. Her cousin sent her a video about Mary, the mother of Jesus. Marcia watched it and was so touched that she gave her life to Jesus and returned to the Church.
