SUCCESS IS SPELLED C-R-O-S-S
"Blessed be the Lord, your God, Whom it has pleased to place you on the throne of Israel." —1 Kings 10:9

Solomon was the wisest person who had ever lived or will ever live (1 Kgs 3:12). He was amazingly rich and lived in such majesty as to leave even the sophisticated queen of Sheba breathless (1 Kgs 10:5).

The Lord made Solomon so awesome to confirm His promise that the Davidic dynasty would last forever (2 Sm 7:16) and bring forth the Messiah (1 Sm 16:1; Mi 5:1). The success of David, Solomon, and their descendants was seen as proof they were God’s chosen ones.

Today, many people think prosperity indicates God’s approval of their life. However, the “prosperity gospel” is only true if we look at prosperity in the long run, and if we define it by Biblical standards. For instance, Jesus was the ultimate Chosen One, yet He appeared a failure. He underwent adversity rather than prosperity for much of His life. Nevertheless, after His crucifixion, when He rose from the dead and ascended to the right hand of the Father, He was certainly more than prosperous (see Is 52:13; 53:12).

Success or prosperity, by Biblical standards, is centered on the wisdom, power (1 Cor 1:24), and glory of the cross (see Gal 6:14). God’s chosen ones are chosen for the glory of the resurrection only because they are chosen for the apparent failure of the cross.

Prayer: Father, may I boast of nothing but the cross of Jesus (Gal 6:14).

Promise: "Commit to the Lord your way; trust in Him, and He will act." —Ps 37:5

Praise: Our Lady of Lourdes led St. Bernadette through acts of faith, trials, and miracles toward a holiness that led countless others on the same path.

JESUS, THE ULTIMATE TRADITIONALIST
"For example, Moses said..." —Mark 7:10

Christianity is based on divine traditions, that is, the handing on of what the Holy Spirit has revealed to God’s people. The Bible itself is written to hand on some divine traditions (see 2 Thes 2:15). Therefore, without respect for tradition, the very basis of Christianity is undermined.

One of the main ways the devil tries to ruin our respect for tradition is by tempting us to place human traditions ahead of divine ones. He wants us to react to this error by trying to throw out tradition instead of throwing out the error. Therefore, Jesus was very interested in showing religious leaders that they were disregarding God’s commandments, which are divine traditions, and clinging “to what is human tradition” (Mk 7:8). Here Jesus was trying to guard the divine traditions expressed in the Bible from being set aside (Mk 7:9) or nullified (Mk 7:13) by mere human traditions.

The devil tries to turn tradition against itself — to use human traditions to destroy divine ones. However, Jesus protects divine tradition from this attack. He is the divine Defender of divine tradition. Jesus is a Traditionalist in the ultimate sense.

Prayer: Father, may I put divine tradition ahead of human tradition, including the tradition to attack tradition.

Promise: May Your eyes watch night and day over this temple, the place where You have decreed You shall be honored; may You heed the prayer which I, Your servant, offer in this place." —1 Kgs 8:29

Praise: St. Scholastica founded a religious community five miles from the monastery of her twin brother, St. Benedict.

TRIUMPHAL ENTRIES
"...to bring up the ark of the Lord's covenant from the city of David." —1 Kings 8:1

In today’s first reading, we hear about the triumphal entry of the ark of the covenant into the new temple which King Solomon had built (1 Kgs 8:1ff). Jesus likewise made a triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday (Mt 21:1-11). Both triumphal entries featured large crowds of rejoicing people. This can be seen in modern times when championship sports teams have triumphal entries called victory parades.

At each Holy Mass, Jesus makes a triumphal entry. The Lord makes a public show of the forces of evil, leading them off captive, triumphant in the person of Christ (Col 2:15). Where are the crowds? Yet even though Jesus is completely accessible to us (see Eph 2:18), we are often not accessible to Him.

If your favorite sports team won a championship, would you participate in the parade? If your favorite entertainer came to town, would you eagerly attend the concert? In that context, can you show up today and this week at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass to welcome Jesus in His triumphal entry? Be present at Mass to welcome Him, so that He need not have to ask: “Why was no one there when I came?” (Is 50:2) Flock to worship Him. Join in His triumph at each Mass.

Prayer: Father, I am so proud of Jesus' triumph over sin and death. I dedicate myself to thanking and worshipping Him daily.

Promise: "All who touched Him got well." —Mk 6:56

Praise: Fr. Roger has attended Mass every day for over thirty years, first as a layman, then as a seminarian, and now as a priest.

LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS
"Your light must shine before men." —Matthew 5:16

In today’s Mass readings, light shines through the presence of gloom (Is 58:10; Ps 112:4). The light of Christ shines through the seeming gloom of the cross (see Mt 4:16; Is 9:1). That is the “real light” (Jn 1:9; 1 Jn 2:8), the spotlight, the beacon shining out in the gloom of night. Today’s Mass features this prayer in the Preface: “You have called us out of darkness into Your own wonderful light” (see 1 Pt 2:9).

In today’s Gospel, Jesus declares: “You are the light of the world” (Mt 5:14). However, the light of Christ shining through you must not be hidden under a bushel basket (Mt 5:15). The bushel basket is not humility; it is a combination of pride and fear.

We ourselves are not the light (see Jn 1:8). Instead, we are to be like stained-glass windows, which “magnify” the light, just as the Blessed Virgin Mary magnified the Lord (see Lk 1:46). The light of Christ shining through us “shall break forth like the dawn” (Is 58:8) and shine through the darkness (see Ps 112:4). “Light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday” (Is 58:10).

Jesus crucified is the Light of the World (Jn 8:12). The Creed we say at Mass proclaims: “Light from light,” meaning Jesus the Light is sent from the Father Who is Light (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 242). In a similar way, let Christ’s light shine brightly in your daily life and actions. It’s dark and gloomy out there. Proclaim the crucified Jesus. Let His light shine.

Prayer: Father, set a fire in my heart that burns with the love of Jesus for all to see.

Promise: "Your faith rests not on the wisdom of men but on the power of God." —1 Cor 2:5

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, for Your great light dispelling the darkness of gloom (Is 9:1). You are the true Light. Alleluia!

WHOSE NEEDS CONCERN YOU?
"God said: 'Ask something of Me and I will give it to you.' " —1 Kings 3:5

God gave the young King Solomon the opportunity to gain everything a man could want (1 Kgs 3:5). But at that point in his life, Solomon made an unselfish decision: to ask not for personal gain, but for the wisdom to be a good ruler for God’s people, the nation of Israel (1 Kgs 3:9).

Jesus had such a busy ministry that He had no time even to eat (Mk 6:31). Yet He put a higher priority on the spiritual and temporal needs of His people than on His own personal needs. “He began to teach them at great length” (Mk 6:34).

What about you? What is on your heart? What would you ask for from God if He told you to ask Him for something? (1 Kgs 3:5; Mt 7:7) God knows everything you need before you ask (Mt 6:8).

The hand of the Lord feeds us; He answers all our needs (Ps 145:16, 19). Since He provides all that we need, His plan is for us to not focus on our own needs and interests. Let the Lord change your focus to be on God’s interests and the needs of others (Phil 2:20-21).

Prayer: Father, transform me in Your Son Jesus Christ. Renew my mind so I am able to serve You and Your people (Rm 12:2).

Promise: "Within my heart I treasure Your promise, that I may not sin against You." —Ps 119:11

Praise: Matt has volunteered in prison ministry for decades, bringing the Good News of Jesus to the incarcerated (see Mt 25:36).

"The man went and beheaded John in the prison. He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother." —Mark 6:28

“Herodias harbored a grudge against” St. John the Baptizer (Mk 6:19) “because John had told Herod, ‘It is not right for you to live with your brother’s wife’ ” (Mk 6:18). So Herodias got Herod to arrest, chain, and imprison John (Mk 6:17). However, she was not able to get Herod to kill John until “Herod held a birthday dinner for his court circle, military officers, and the leading men of Galilee” (Mk 6:21). We don’t know, but Herod may have been drinking too much alcohol. We also don’t know, but Herod may have been lusting for the dancing daughter of Herodias. (Herod was already living in a lustful, adulterous relationship with Herodias.) Possibly Herod was drunk and even more susceptible to lust. To impress the girl and everyone else, Herod swore that he would give her whatever she asked for, even to half of his kingdom (Mk 6:23). This may not have made Herodias happy since a younger woman, her own daughter, was being favored rather than she herself. Herodias, nonetheless, exploited the situation to get John beheaded (Mk 6:24). Herod still could have eaten his words. “Yet because of his oath and the presence of the guests, he did not want to refuse her” (Mk 6:26).

What are the makings of a murder, or of other mortal sins? Are they sexual sins, pride, grudges, compromises, alcohol, lust, and rash statements? Satan knows how to weave a web. Will you be trapped in it and damned? Or will you repent?

Prayer: Father, I will humble myself, repent, and go to Confession.

Promise: "The Lord forgave him his sins and exalted his strength forever." —Sir 47:11

THE WORD LESS SPOKEN
"They went off, preaching the need of repentance."—Mark 6:12

Repentance is a term meaning to view things differently and so turn one’s life around in a different direction, generally involving renouncing and confessing sins. When was the last time you used the word “repent” in a conversation? When was the last time you encouraged someone to repent? For that matter, when was the last time you repented?

Jesus commissioned His twelve apostles to drive out demons (Mk 6:7; Mt 10:8). On Catholic radio, I once heard an interview with an exorcist who said that one instance of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, that is, Confession, is as powerful as a hundred exorcisms. Proclaiming the need of repentance is critical to Jesus’ ministry of setting the captives free (Lk 4:18). So, now is the time (see 2 Cor 6:2) to talk about “the need of repentance” (Mk 6:12). The Lord is very merciful and kind (see Ps 103:8). He rejoices in repentant sinners (Lk 15:10).

Will you repent today? Will you speak the word “repent” to someone today? A good guideline on the use of the word “repent” is to speak of repentance as often as Jesus did. “Search the Scriptures” (Jn 5:39), and take note of how often Jesus speaks of repentance.

Today, on Thursday, we Catholics pray the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary. The third luminous mystery is the Proclamation of the Kingdom of God, with the Call to Repentance. Let us proclaim repentance. Let Confession lines be full. Let captives be set free. Let repentance be sincere, profound, and life-changing. “Be earnest about it, therefore. Repent!” (Rv 3:19)

Prayer: Father, give me the heart of Jesus for repentance.

Promise: "Keep the mandate of the Lord, your God, following His ways and observing His statutes." —1 Kgs 2:3

Praise: Through great trials and intense physical tortures, St. Agatha endured her martyrdom to the praise and glory of God.

COUNT ME IN OR COUNT ME OUT?
"Afterward, however, David regretted having numbered the people, and said to the Lord: 'I have sinned grievously in what I have done.' " —2 Samuel 24:10

Do you remember how proud you were when you learned to count to ten all by yourself? Human beings love to count. This is because we are created in the image and likeness of God, and God loves to count. One of the books of the Bible is even named Numbers. The Bible begins with seven days. The Bible ends with 144,000 saved (Rv 14:1-3), the total fulfillment of the entire Scriptures.  There are twelve tribes of Israel in the Old Testament, twelve apostles in the New Testament and one-thousand shows a massive and overwhelming fullness. God, the accountant, even counts the hairs on our heads (Mt 10:30) and the number of tears we shed (Ps 56:9).

However, because our nature is fallen, our counting can be fallen. For example, David ordered a census and counted the men fit for military service (2 Sm 24:2ff). David did this against God’s will. The Lord had always told His people they would be victorious even if they were outnumbered (e.g. Lv 26:8; Jgs 7:7; 1 Sm 14:6; 1 Mc 3:18-19). So why count the troops? Didn’t David believe God?

Like David, we can sin in counting. We can count too much on money and possessions. We can count others’ sins against us and be unforgiving (cf 1 Cor 13:5). We can count ourselves better than others (cf Phil 2:3-4). We must resist these temptations to count sinfully and repent if we have sinned in these areas.

The main thing is that we can count on God, and we want Him to be able to count on us. Count in the Lord.

Prayer: Father, make me steadfast so You can count on me no matter what.

Promise: "Happy is he whose fault is taken away, whose sin is covered." —Ps 32:1

Praise: When his wife became permanently bedridden, Alfred counted his blessings and was as loving a husband as ever.

"ONLY BELIEVE"
"Do not fear; only believe." —Mark 5:36, RSV-CE

We believe in Jesus, but we may have a lack of faith (Mk 9:24). Faith and doubt coexist in us. We believe, but we may also give in to fear. Likewise, faith and fear may coexist in us.

Jesus wants us to put out fear, doubt, and unforgiveness from our hearts, as He put the mourners out from the room where Jairus’ dead daughter lay (see Mk 5:40). When we put everything out but faith, we are obeying Jesus’ double commands: “Do not fear; only believe” (Mk 5:36, RSV-CE).

When we are single-hearted (see Mt 5:8) instead of mixed-up, we are no longer being pushed around by the crowd of fear, doubt, and confusion (see Mk 5:24). When we have “only faith,” we are not in the room of death; rather, we are in the room of resurrection. We need purified and pure faith.

“All depends on faith, everything is grace” (Rm 4:16). “Do not fear; only believe” (Mk 5:36, RSV-CE).

Prayer: Father, as I receive the St. Blaise blessing today, give me pure, uncontaminated faith in You.

Promise: "At this the family's astonishment knew no bounds." —Mk 5:42

Praise: St. Ansgar evangelized Scandinavia and even converted the King of Sweden to faith in Jesus.

This day has traditionally been called “Candlemas” because at the presentation of the Lord in the temple Simeon called Jesus “a revealing Light to the Gentiles.” Candles and light serve the purpose of revealing. We don’t turn on the lights to see the lights but rather to see what the light reveals. Candles reveal by being burned up, consumed. So it is with us. Jesus calls us “the light of the world” (Mt 5:14). We live and die to reveal Jesus (2 Cor 4:10).

Today, bring your candles to church and have them blessed. In so doing, you are making a commitment to give your life and light so that Jesus will be revealed to the world. Thus, to have our candles blessed is not trivial, quaint, or nostalgic. It is a decision to live and die on the cross. The Church demonstrates this tomorrow when it takes newly blessed candles, crosses them, ties them with ribbon as red as martyrs’ blood, and uses them to pray for deliverance and healing through the intercession of St. Blaise.

I invite and dare you to have your candles blessed. Take up the cross of light.

Prayer: Father, I will live as a child of the light and produce "every kind of goodness and justice and truth" (Eph 5:9).

Promise: "Jesus likewise had a full share in ours, that by His death He might rob the devil, the prince of death, of his power, and free those who through fear of death had been slaves their whole life long." —Heb 2:14-15

Praise: Praise be to You, Jesus, "Light of the World" (Jn 8:12). All glory be to You forever!

“SEEK HUMILITY” (Zep 2:3) - One Bread, One Body, 02/01/2026

"SEEK HUMILITY" (Zep 2:3)
"...a people humble and lowly, who shall take refuge in the name of the Lord." —Zephaniah 3:12

In 2023, when this was written, the memorial of St. Thomas Aquinas occurred the day before this Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time. Thomas differed from those described in today’s readings. He was wise; “not many of [us] are wise” (1 Cor 1:26). He was the most brilliant of men, extremely well educated. Yet Thomas also resembled the people written about in today’s readings: humble, “poor in spirit” (Mt 5:3), dependent upon God.

Though Thomas wrote of the deepest theology, his humility shone through. Near the end of his life, Thomas saw a vision of God. He stopped writing, saying, “All my works are straw.” He then prepared to meet the Lord on Judgment Day (see Am 4:12), humbling himself before God. In this way, Thomas imitated Jesus, Who “humbled Himself,” living a simple life, hidden from the public eye for thirty years (Phil 2:8).

The wisdom of God is immeasurably far above our thoughts (Is 55:8-9). The very best humanity can produce is simply a drop in the ocean of God’s wisdom. “Mankind can do no boasting before God” (1 Cor 1:29). Yet humanity is filled with “proud braggarts” (Zep 3:11).

Be like St. Thomas. “Seek humility” (Zep 2:3). “Bow humbly under God’s mighty hand” (1 Pt 5:6) and use your God-given talents for the Lord.

Prayer: Father, in all things, may You increase and I decrease (Jn 3:30).

Promise: "Blest are they who hunger and thirst for holiness; they shall have their fill." —Mt 5:6

Praise: "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever" (Ps 118:1).

GOD DOES NOT SLUMBER (Ps 121:4) - One Bread, One Body, 01/31/2026

GOD DOES NOT SLUMBER (Ps 121:4)
"Jesus was in the stern through it all, sound asleep on a cushion." —Mark 4:38

We call upon Jesus to wake up, arise, and come to our aid. “Awake! Why are You asleep, O Lord? Arise!...Why do You hide Your face, forgetting our woe and our oppression?...Arise, help us! Redeem us for Your kindness’ sake” (Ps 44:24-27). But God never slumbers nor sleeps (Ps 121:4). He is our “Guardian” (Ps 121:5). He provides for us while we sleep (Ps 127:2), so why would He sleep when we need His protection? Thus, we are called to have confidence in God when it seems to us that He is absent or sleeping.

So many times Jesus sets an example for us (Jn 13:15; 1 Pt 2:21). Perhaps Jesus’ example to us in today’s Gospel passage is to be calm rather than terrified. Indeed, He asks us: “Why are you so terrified? Why are you lacking in faith?” (Mk 4:40)

If Jesus seems asleep, then rejoice that He is present in the boat; He “is with us” (Mt 1:23). He is at peace, and He says to us: “Peace be with you” (Jn 20:19, 21). Jesus is gentle (Mt 11:29). The answer in our storms is to have faith in Him (Mk 4:40).

It is good to call upon God in our fear. It is even better to have faith. “Fear is useless; what is needed is trust” (Mk 5:36). Jesus is always present, Emmanuel, God-with-us (Mt 1:23; 28:20). If it seems God is hiding, remember that He hides for us, not from us. He is our Example to trust the Father in all storms. Come to Jesus and find rest in the storm (Mt 11:28).

Prayer: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, help me never to surrender my confidence in You (Heb 10:35).

Promise: "Who can this be that the wind and sea obey Him?" —Mk 4:41

Praise: St. John Bosco never gave up on any of the young people with whom he met, but always saw an opportunity for God's grace to be revealed to them.

LITTLE BIG HORN
"What comparison shall we use for the reign of God? What image will help to present it? It is like mustard seed." —Mark 4:30-31

The kingdom of God encompasses the universe. It is unshakable and will last forever. It is the kingdom above all kingdoms. It is sovereign and supreme. Yet, Jesus surprisingly compares the biggest and greatest kingdom of all to the smallest seed of all — the mustard seed. Jesus’ point is that the greatest things begin with the smallest things.

For instance, one of David’s greatest sins was adultery with Bathsheba, which led to the subsequent murder of her husband Uriah. These sins eventually resulted in a civil war and the death of David’s son, Absalom (see 2 Sm 12:11; 16:11, 22; 18:15). These “big sins” began with a little, impure glance (see 2 Sm 11:2).

Judas’ great sin was betraying Jesus to the religious leaders, which led to Jesus’ crucifixion (Lk 22:3-6). This worst sin may have begun with Judas stealing a little change from Jesus and the apostles (see Jn 12:6).

Elijah’s greatest work was anointing Elisha. This anointing resulted in two other anointings which changed the whole country. This great work began when Elijah heard God in a tiny whispering sound (1 Kgs 19:12ff).

God’s biggest and greatest work of all was Jesus’ death, Resurrection, and Ascension followed by the coming of the Holy Spirit. This began when Mary conceived Jesus, Who became a human embryo smaller than my thumbnail. Don’t scorn small beginnings (see Zec 4:10).

Prayer: Father, use my little tongue to do big things for You (see Jas 3:5).

Promise: "Have mercy on me, O God, in Your goodness; in the greatness of Your compassion wipe out my offense." —Ps 51:3

Praise: Megan decided to go to daily Mass during Lent. She was so drawn to the Eucharist that she never stopped attending daily Mass. She has been a daily communicant for over twenty years.

WHY ME?
"Who am I, Lord God, and who are the members of my house, that You have brought me to this point?" —2 Samuel 7:18

We should never think we deserve to wake up, live another day, breathe, walk, sing, smile, or pray. These and millions of other things are all gifts from God as He constantly pours out His love on us (see Acts 17:28). We’ve done nothing to merit these blessings and ought not to take them as merited. When something bad happens to us and our families, we say: “Who am I, Lord God, and who are the members of my house, that You have brought me to this point?” (2 Sm 7:18) We are quick to say that we don’t deserve our sufferings, although we give the impression we do deserve our blessings.

For the most part it’s the other way around. We are responsible for many of our sufferings. Often we have caused them by our sins. However, our blessings have not been caused by our meritorious conduct but by the Lord’s crucified, unconditional love for us.

Therefore, we should live in gratitude for millions of unmerited blessings and in repentance for our sins and consequent sufferings (see Rm 5:8). In the midst of God’s love, we should ask: “Who am I...?” And we answer: “I am a sinner, forgiven, saved, and loved by God in His mercy.” Alleluia!

Prayer: Father, give me an attitude of gratitude even under the most difficult circumstances.

Promise: "In the measure you give you shall receive, and more besides." —Mk 4:24

Praise: The Browns prayed together as a family and stayed close even as they relocated in several states.

THE ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM
"Some landed among thorns, which grew up and choked it off." —Mark 4:7

Christian parents are rightly and deeply concerned about an unusual phenomenon in the Western world. This phenomenon is the fact that many young people leave the Christian faith in their teenage years. This is unprecedented in Christian history and limited to the Western part of the world.

How can parents prevent this tragedy from continuing? First, we should understand that many young people who have left the external practice of the faith have never made a personal, total commitment of their lives to the Lord. They have not left the faith because they have never accepted the faith (see 1 Jn 2:19).

What about those young people who have accepted the faith? How can their parents prevent the seed of God’s Word from being choked off in their children by the thorns of  “anxieties over life’s demands, and the desire for wealth, and cravings of other sorts”? (Mk 4:19) Pope St. John Paul II has given a tremendous insight into protecting our young people from losing their faith. The Pope has taught: “Only by praying together with their children can a father and mother — exercising their royal priesthood — penetrate the innermost depths of their children’s hearts and leave an impression that the future events in their lives will not be able to efface” (The Role of the Christian Family in the Modern World, Pope St. John Paul II, 60).

Parents, pray together daily with your children.

Prayer: Father, may Christians be holy families who pray together.

Promise: "Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before Me; your throne shall stand firm forever." —2 Sm 7:16

Praise: St. Thomas Aquinas was praying before a crucifix near the end of his life. A voice asked Thomas what he wanted as the reward for all his service to God. Thomas answered, "None but Yourself, O Lord."

LET THEM TALK
"David, girt with a linen apron, came dancing before the Lord with abandon." —2 Samuel 6:14

A characteristic of David’s life is that he gave himself to “the Lord with abandon” (2 Sm 6:14). David didn’t hold back on giving to God, no matter what others said about him.

David was upset that Goliath was insulting God (1 Sm 17:26) and was determined to defend God’s honor by fighting the giant. David’s brothers “grew angry with David,” insulting and belittling him (1 Sm 17:28). Goliath insulted David as well (1 Sm 17:42ff). David, however, paid no attention to the insults, but abandoned his life for the honor of God’s name (1 Sm 17:45ff).

David not only danced with abandon before the Lord, he gave the procession his all. He organized hundreds of people to carry the ark, to process in worship, and sing God’s praises (see 1 Chr 15:3-25). David gave it all financially as well, by providing a meal for every person in Israel, as he had called the entire nation to the procession (1 Chr 15:28; 16:3). He held nothing back when it came to worshipping God. Yet his reward was to be “despised” (1 Chr 15:29) and insulted by his wife, Michal, for a seeming lack of royal dignity in his worship (2 Sm 6:20). David paid no attention to the insult, and responded by telling her that he would now worship God with abandon “even more” (2 Sm 6:22).

Be like King David, St. Mary Magdalene, St. Stephen, and today’s saint, St. Angela. Abandon yourself so completely to the Lord that you notice only His glory.

Prayer: Jesus, may I love you so much that I can only rejoice when I am ill-treated for Your sake (Acts 5:41; 13:52; Mt 5:11-12).

Promise: Jesus said: "Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to Me." —Mk 3:35

Praise: St. Angela's work in the pioneering of homeschooling helped elevate women, education, and the importance of family.

WHEN CHURCH IS NOT UNITED...
"If a kingdom is torn by civil strife, that kingdom cannot last." —Mark 3:24

According to Jesus’ words, the Church in a state of division will not survive (Mk 3:24). “If a household is divided according to loyalties, that household will not survive” (Mk 3:25). However, we know that the Church will last forever because the Lord has promised this (see Mt 16:18). Therefore, we know the Church will be united. This unity will be achieved (Eph 2:15) by God’s grace, accepted by faith, and expressed in repentance.

How will the Holy Spirit convict us of our sins of division in the body of Christ? One of the outstanding ways in which the Spirit will lead us to repent may be related to the massacre of millions of babies through abortion. Many people have come to realize that a united Church would have used her God-given authority to prevent and stop abortion. Hence the results of our disunity are not minimal but catastrophic. If this doesn’t motivate us to repent, we must not love babies, their parents, or the Lord, their Creator and Savior.

When we are in unity, we are in power. When Christians are in power, we are not trapped in a “culture of death” (Pope St. John Paul II) but instead we usher in a “civilization of love” (Pope St. Paul VI) and of life. To choose life, we must choose unity and repentance. Repent! (Mt 3:2, RSV-CE)

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to make us one as You and Jesus are one (Jn 17:21).

Promise: "I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God bestowed when my hands were laid on you. The Spirit God has given us is no cowardly Spirit, but rather One that makes us strong, loving, and wise." —2 Tm 1:6-7

Praise: St. Timothy persevered at St. Paul's encouragement to stir into flame the Holy Spirit (2 Tm 1:6).

LET THE WORD SHINE
"Preach the gospel — not with wordy "wisdom," however, lest the cross of Christ be rendered void of its meaning!" —1 Corinthians 1:17

Jesus chose the uneducated, those who did not speak well (1 Cor 1:27-28). The Lord called St. Paul, who admitted he did not speak well (2 Cor 11:6) and was unimpressive in person (2 Cor 10:10). God called Moses, who was “slow of speech and tongue” (Ex 4:10) and a “poor speaker” (Ex 6:12). However, God told Moses that He Himself would assist him in speaking (Ex 4:12).

Apollos was an eloquent speaker (Acts 18:24). We do want to present the Gospel as skillfully as we can. But we don’t want to obscure the cross and its power by our human wisdom (1 Cor 1:17; 2:1). We want people to follow the crucified Jesus rather than a particular person, however dynamic they might be. People follow a charismatic personality, but when that person dies, the followers tend to disappear (see Acts 5:36-37).

No wonder that St. Paul, a few verses after warning about preaching with “wordy” wisdom (1 Cor 1:17), said that he would speak of nothing but Jesus and Him crucified (1 Cor 2:2). That is the power of God leading to salvation (Rm 1:16).

It’s a balancing act that only the Holy Spirit can bring to perfection. We want “to do well” in skillfully presenting the Gospel (1 Tm 5:17),  but we don’t want to obscure the message and power of the cross. Lift high the cross. Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to serve Your Word skillfully while also letting Your Word speak powerfully through my life.

Promise: "A people living in darkness has seen a great light." —Mt 4:16

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, the incarnate and eternal Word!

OUT OF OUR MINDS
"Alas! The glory of Israel, Saul, slain upon your heights; how can the warriors have fallen!" —2 Samuel 1:19

David deeply grieved the death of King Saul in battle (2 Sm 1:11). He grieved for the man who multiple times hunted him down to kill him. David should have been Saul’s general, but Saul expelled him. If David was fighting in Saul’s army, the Israelites might have won the battle because the Lord had made David successful in war (1 Sm 18:13ff). Additionally, King Saul “was out of his mind” (see Mk 3:21), even seeking advice from the very medium he had outlawed (1 Sm 28:3, 7ff). Saul had an “evil spirit” (1 Sm 18:10). He was subject to fits of depression. Yet David forgave Saul and spared his life (1 Sm 24:5ff), even though Saul’s poor decisions led the entire nation to defeat.

Jesus was called “out of His mind,” but He was truly sane. Yet He, like David, suffered for and forgave those who slandered and persecuted Him. Can you do likewise? Take on “the mind of Christ” (1 Cor 2:16). Be considered “out of your mind” because you are into His mind. Love the Lord “with all your mind” (Lk 10:27) and “be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Rm 12:2).

Prayer: Father, every day I will come before You in prayer and allow You to fill my mind with Your Word.

Promise: "Rouse Your power and come to save us." —Ps 80:3

MERCY AND CHOICE
"He then went up the mountain and summoned the men He Himself had decided on." —Mark 3:13

Throughout salvation history, God has been continually choosing His servants. God, through the prophet Samuel, chose David (1 Sm 16:12). Jesus chose the Twelve apostles (Mk 3:13). Jesus said: “It was not you who chose Me, it was I Who chose you” (Jn 15:16). Jesus even chose a man “who betrayed Him” (Mk 3:19).

In today’s psalm, the psalmist, David, prays: “Have pity on me, O God; have pity on me” (Ps 57:2). Through the apostles and their successors, God does have mercy on us (see Jn 20:21-23). He bestows abundant mercy through His Church. Do we want to receive His mercy through the Church, God’s chosen dispenser of mercy? Or do we want God to show mercy directly to us? Likewise Naaman wanted to receive mercy personally from Elijah. Naaman was too proud to receive mercy and healing in a way that seemed less catered to his wishes (2 Kgs 5:5ff).

We often think it’s our choice to serve God or not. This is partially true, as God has granted us free will to make such life-changing choices (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1730-1731, 1993). But first, God has chosen us and loved us (1 Jn 4:19). Accept His choice of you, as well as His choice of how He wishes for you to serve Him. May the mercy of God flow into you, and then through you to a hurting world.

Prayer: Father, thank You for choosing me. I ratify Your choice by freely saying "Yes" to You. Use me and use me up.

Promise: "May the Lord reward you generously for what you have done this day." —1 Sm 24:20

CROWDED CONDITIONS
"A great crowd followed Him from Galilee." —Mark 3:7

Jesus usually healed people in crowded conditions, such as when the press of the crowd was so great that He had to get into a boat to avoid being pushed into the water (Mk 3:9). The woman with the twelve-year hemorrhage had to fight her way through a pushing and shoving crowd to touch Jesus’ garment and be healed (Mk 5:30-31).

Crowd control was also a problem for those who tried to touch the tassel of Jesus’ cloak to receive healing (Mk 6:55-56). The men carrying the paralytic couldn’t even get close to Jesus because of the crowd (Mk 2:2ff), but had to make a hole in the roof and lower the man through it.

Healing still takes place in crowded conditions. The crowd for us is not so much outside as inside. Sin, fear, doubt, self-hatred, jealousy, unforgiveness, bitterness, and pride try to crowd out healing. We must fight our way through a crowd of interior obstacles to receive Jesus’ healing. Stand out in the crowd. Touch Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, on this Day of prayer and penance for the unborn and the protection of human life and dignity, hear and answer our prayers. Grace us to not let ourselves be intimidated, blocked, or discouraged.

Promise: "My wanderings You have counted; my tears are stored in Your flask; are they not recorded in Your book? Then do my enemies turn back, when I call upon You." —Ps 56:9-10

Praise: Crowded with thoughts of fear, anxiety, and distress, Lisa received a healing at Mass during the "Our Father" when she recited the phrase, "Deliver us from evil."

UNITED AGAINST JESUS
"[The Pharisees] immediately began to plot with the Herodians how they might destroy [Jesus]." —Mark 3:6

The Pharisees were a holy religious group who were zealous for the God of Israel (see Mt 5:20). The Herodians were a secular political group loyal to King Herod. The Pharisees opposed the Roman occupation of Israel, while the Herodians were not opposed. The Pharisees and the Herodians were two groups that had little in common. Yet they began to work together because they both opposed Jesus. The Pharisees would likely not have worked with the Herodians but for their desire to stop Jesus. The same happened with Pilate and Herod, who had been enemies but became friends in their opposition to Jesus (Lk 23:7-12).

Who would you never imagine that you could work with? If you don’t fix your eyes on Jesus (Heb 12:2), deny yourself, pick up your cross and follow in Jesus’ footsteps (Lk 9:23), you might eventually find yourself preferring to work with that group of people rather than turning to Jesus. Would you ever join forces with Goliath, who insulted the Lord? (see 1 Sm 17:45)

Judas chose to work with those who opposed Jesus rather than bringing his questions directly to Jesus. There is a Judas within us, lurking to gain control of our lives. There is a civil war ever ready to break out in our hearts (Jas 4:1). But the Lord wants to train our hands for battle, our fingers for victory in the spiritual war (Ps 144:1-2). “Stretch out your hand” to Jesus (Mk 3:5), not to those opposed to Him.

Prayer: Jesus, You declared that we are either for You or against You (Mt 12:30). Grant that I may always be for You.

Promise: "Blessed be the Lord, my Rock, Who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war." —Ps 144:1

Praise: St. Ambrose wrote that St. Agnes "went to the place of execution more cheerfully than others go to their wedding."
