GOD DOES NOT SLUMBER (Ps 121:4)
"Jesus was in the stern through it all, sound asleep on a cushion." —Mark 4:38

We call upon Jesus to wake up, arise, and come to our aid. “Awake! Why are You asleep, O Lord? Arise!...Why do You hide Your face, forgetting our woe and our oppression?...Arise, help us! Redeem us for Your kindness’ sake” (Ps 44:24-27). But God never slumbers nor sleeps (Ps 121:4). He is our “Guardian” (Ps 121:5). He provides for us while we sleep (Ps 127:2), so why would He sleep when we need His protection? Thus, we are called to have confidence in God when it seems to us that He is absent or sleeping.

So many times Jesus sets an example for us (Jn 13:15; 1 Pt 2:21). Perhaps Jesus’ example to us in today’s Gospel passage is to be calm rather than terrified. Indeed, He asks us: “Why are you so terrified? Why are you lacking in faith?” (Mk 4:40)

If Jesus seems asleep, then rejoice that He is present in the boat; He “is with us” (Mt 1:23). He is at peace, and He says to us: “Peace be with you” (Jn 20:19, 21). Jesus is gentle (Mt 11:29). The answer in our storms is to have faith in Him (Mk 4:40).

It is good to call upon God in our fear. It is even better to have faith. “Fear is useless; what is needed is trust” (Mk 5:36). Jesus is always present, Emmanuel, God-with-us (Mt 1:23; 28:20). If it seems God is hiding, remember that He hides for us, not from us. He is our Example to trust the Father in all storms. Come to Jesus and find rest in the storm (Mt 11:28).

Prayer: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, help me never to surrender my confidence in You (Heb 10:35).

Promise: "Who can this be that the wind and sea obey Him?" —Mk 4:41

Praise: St. John Bosco never gave up on any of the young people with whom he met, but always saw an opportunity for God's grace to be revealed to them.

LITTLE BIG HORN
"What comparison shall we use for the reign of God? What image will help to present it? It is like mustard seed." —Mark 4:30-31

The kingdom of God encompasses the universe. It is unshakable and will last forever. It is the kingdom above all kingdoms. It is sovereign and supreme. Yet, Jesus surprisingly compares the biggest and greatest kingdom of all to the smallest seed of all — the mustard seed. Jesus’ point is that the greatest things begin with the smallest things.

For instance, one of David’s greatest sins was adultery with Bathsheba, which led to the subsequent murder of her husband Uriah. These sins eventually resulted in a civil war and the death of David’s son, Absalom (see 2 Sm 12:11; 16:11, 22; 18:15). These “big sins” began with a little, impure glance (see 2 Sm 11:2).

Judas’ great sin was betraying Jesus to the religious leaders, which led to Jesus’ crucifixion (Lk 22:3-6). This worst sin may have begun with Judas stealing a little change from Jesus and the apostles (see Jn 12:6).

Elijah’s greatest work was anointing Elisha. This anointing resulted in two other anointings which changed the whole country. This great work began when Elijah heard God in a tiny whispering sound (1 Kgs 19:12ff).

God’s biggest and greatest work of all was Jesus’ death, Resurrection, and Ascension followed by the coming of the Holy Spirit. This began when Mary conceived Jesus, Who became a human embryo smaller than my thumbnail. Don’t scorn small beginnings (see Zec 4:10).

Prayer: Father, use my little tongue to do big things for You (see Jas 3:5).

Promise: "Have mercy on me, O God, in Your goodness; in the greatness of Your compassion wipe out my offense." —Ps 51:3

Praise: Megan decided to go to daily Mass during Lent. She was so drawn to the Eucharist that she never stopped attending daily Mass. She has been a daily communicant for over twenty years.

WHY ME?
"Who am I, Lord God, and who are the members of my house, that You have brought me to this point?" —2 Samuel 7:18

We should never think we deserve to wake up, live another day, breathe, walk, sing, smile, or pray. These and millions of other things are all gifts from God as He constantly pours out His love on us (see Acts 17:28). We’ve done nothing to merit these blessings and ought not to take them as merited. When something bad happens to us and our families, we say: “Who am I, Lord God, and who are the members of my house, that You have brought me to this point?” (2 Sm 7:18) We are quick to say that we don’t deserve our sufferings, although we give the impression we do deserve our blessings.

For the most part it’s the other way around. We are responsible for many of our sufferings. Often we have caused them by our sins. However, our blessings have not been caused by our meritorious conduct but by the Lord’s crucified, unconditional love for us.

Therefore, we should live in gratitude for millions of unmerited blessings and in repentance for our sins and consequent sufferings (see Rm 5:8). In the midst of God’s love, we should ask: “Who am I...?” And we answer: “I am a sinner, forgiven, saved, and loved by God in His mercy.” Alleluia!

Prayer: Father, give me an attitude of gratitude even under the most difficult circumstances.

Promise: "In the measure you give you shall receive, and more besides." —Mk 4:24

Praise: The Browns prayed together as a family and stayed close even as they relocated in several states.

THE ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM
"Some landed among thorns, which grew up and choked it off." —Mark 4:7

Christian parents are rightly and deeply concerned about an unusual phenomenon in the Western world. This phenomenon is the fact that many young people leave the Christian faith in their teenage years. This is unprecedented in Christian history and limited to the Western part of the world.

How can parents prevent this tragedy from continuing? First, we should understand that many young people who have left the external practice of the faith have never made a personal, total commitment of their lives to the Lord. They have not left the faith because they have never accepted the faith (see 1 Jn 2:19).

What about those young people who have accepted the faith? How can their parents prevent the seed of God’s Word from being choked off in their children by the thorns of  “anxieties over life’s demands, and the desire for wealth, and cravings of other sorts”? (Mk 4:19) Pope St. John Paul II has given a tremendous insight into protecting our young people from losing their faith. The Pope has taught: “Only by praying together with their children can a father and mother — exercising their royal priesthood — penetrate the innermost depths of their children’s hearts and leave an impression that the future events in their lives will not be able to efface” (The Role of the Christian Family in the Modern World, Pope St. John Paul II, 60).

Parents, pray together daily with your children.

Prayer: Father, may Christians be holy families who pray together.

Promise: "Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before Me; your throne shall stand firm forever." —2 Sm 7:16

Praise: St. Thomas Aquinas was praying before a crucifix near the end of his life. A voice asked Thomas what he wanted as the reward for all his service to God. Thomas answered, "None but Yourself, O Lord."

LET THEM TALK
"David, girt with a linen apron, came dancing before the Lord with abandon." —2 Samuel 6:14

A characteristic of David’s life is that he gave himself to “the Lord with abandon” (2 Sm 6:14). David didn’t hold back on giving to God, no matter what others said about him.

David was upset that Goliath was insulting God (1 Sm 17:26) and was determined to defend God’s honor by fighting the giant. David’s brothers “grew angry with David,” insulting and belittling him (1 Sm 17:28). Goliath insulted David as well (1 Sm 17:42ff). David, however, paid no attention to the insults, but abandoned his life for the honor of God’s name (1 Sm 17:45ff).

David not only danced with abandon before the Lord, he gave the procession his all. He organized hundreds of people to carry the ark, to process in worship, and sing God’s praises (see 1 Chr 15:3-25). David gave it all financially as well, by providing a meal for every person in Israel, as he had called the entire nation to the procession (1 Chr 15:28; 16:3). He held nothing back when it came to worshipping God. Yet his reward was to be “despised” (1 Chr 15:29) and insulted by his wife, Michal, for a seeming lack of royal dignity in his worship (2 Sm 6:20). David paid no attention to the insult, and responded by telling her that he would now worship God with abandon “even more” (2 Sm 6:22).

Be like King David, St. Mary Magdalene, St. Stephen, and today’s saint, St. Angela. Abandon yourself so completely to the Lord that you notice only His glory.

Prayer: Jesus, may I love you so much that I can only rejoice when I am ill-treated for Your sake (Acts 5:41; 13:52; Mt 5:11-12).

Promise: Jesus said: "Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to Me." —Mk 3:35

Praise: St. Angela's work in the pioneering of homeschooling helped elevate women, education, and the importance of family.

WHEN CHURCH IS NOT UNITED...
"If a kingdom is torn by civil strife, that kingdom cannot last." —Mark 3:24

According to Jesus’ words, the Church in a state of division will not survive (Mk 3:24). “If a household is divided according to loyalties, that household will not survive” (Mk 3:25). However, we know that the Church will last forever because the Lord has promised this (see Mt 16:18). Therefore, we know the Church will be united. This unity will be achieved (Eph 2:15) by God’s grace, accepted by faith, and expressed in repentance.

How will the Holy Spirit convict us of our sins of division in the body of Christ? One of the outstanding ways in which the Spirit will lead us to repent may be related to the massacre of millions of babies through abortion. Many people have come to realize that a united Church would have used her God-given authority to prevent and stop abortion. Hence the results of our disunity are not minimal but catastrophic. If this doesn’t motivate us to repent, we must not love babies, their parents, or the Lord, their Creator and Savior.

When we are in unity, we are in power. When Christians are in power, we are not trapped in a “culture of death” (Pope St. John Paul II) but instead we usher in a “civilization of love” (Pope St. Paul VI) and of life. To choose life, we must choose unity and repentance. Repent! (Mt 3:2, RSV-CE)

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to make us one as You and Jesus are one (Jn 17:21).

Promise: "I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God bestowed when my hands were laid on you. The Spirit God has given us is no cowardly Spirit, but rather One that makes us strong, loving, and wise." —2 Tm 1:6-7

Praise: St. Timothy persevered at St. Paul's encouragement to stir into flame the Holy Spirit (2 Tm 1:6).

LET THE WORD SHINE
"Preach the gospel — not with wordy "wisdom," however, lest the cross of Christ be rendered void of its meaning!" —1 Corinthians 1:17

Jesus chose the uneducated, those who did not speak well (1 Cor 1:27-28). The Lord called St. Paul, who admitted he did not speak well (2 Cor 11:6) and was unimpressive in person (2 Cor 10:10). God called Moses, who was “slow of speech and tongue” (Ex 4:10) and a “poor speaker” (Ex 6:12). However, God told Moses that He Himself would assist him in speaking (Ex 4:12).

Apollos was an eloquent speaker (Acts 18:24). We do want to present the Gospel as skillfully as we can. But we don’t want to obscure the cross and its power by our human wisdom (1 Cor 1:17; 2:1). We want people to follow the crucified Jesus rather than a particular person, however dynamic they might be. People follow a charismatic personality, but when that person dies, the followers tend to disappear (see Acts 5:36-37).

No wonder that St. Paul, a few verses after warning about preaching with “wordy” wisdom (1 Cor 1:17), said that he would speak of nothing but Jesus and Him crucified (1 Cor 2:2). That is the power of God leading to salvation (Rm 1:16).

It’s a balancing act that only the Holy Spirit can bring to perfection. We want “to do well” in skillfully presenting the Gospel (1 Tm 5:17),  but we don’t want to obscure the message and power of the cross. Lift high the cross. Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, give me the grace to serve Your Word skillfully while also letting Your Word speak powerfully through my life.

Promise: "A people living in darkness has seen a great light." —Mt 4:16

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, the incarnate and eternal Word!

OUT OF OUR MINDS
"Alas! The glory of Israel, Saul, slain upon your heights; how can the warriors have fallen!" —2 Samuel 1:19

David deeply grieved the death of King Saul in battle (2 Sm 1:11). He grieved for the man who multiple times hunted him down to kill him. David should have been Saul’s general, but Saul expelled him. If David was fighting in Saul’s army, the Israelites might have won the battle because the Lord had made David successful in war (1 Sm 18:13ff). Additionally, King Saul “was out of his mind” (see Mk 3:21), even seeking advice from the very medium he had outlawed (1 Sm 28:3, 7ff). Saul had an “evil spirit” (1 Sm 18:10). He was subject to fits of depression. Yet David forgave Saul and spared his life (1 Sm 24:5ff), even though Saul’s poor decisions led the entire nation to defeat.

Jesus was called “out of His mind,” but He was truly sane. Yet He, like David, suffered for and forgave those who slandered and persecuted Him. Can you do likewise? Take on “the mind of Christ” (1 Cor 2:16). Be considered “out of your mind” because you are into His mind. Love the Lord “with all your mind” (Lk 10:27) and “be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Rm 12:2).

Prayer: Father, every day I will come before You in prayer and allow You to fill my mind with Your Word.

Promise: "Rouse Your power and come to save us." —Ps 80:3

MERCY AND CHOICE
"He then went up the mountain and summoned the men He Himself had decided on." —Mark 3:13

Throughout salvation history, God has been continually choosing His servants. God, through the prophet Samuel, chose David (1 Sm 16:12). Jesus chose the Twelve apostles (Mk 3:13). Jesus said: “It was not you who chose Me, it was I Who chose you” (Jn 15:16). Jesus even chose a man “who betrayed Him” (Mk 3:19).

In today’s psalm, the psalmist, David, prays: “Have pity on me, O God; have pity on me” (Ps 57:2). Through the apostles and their successors, God does have mercy on us (see Jn 20:21-23). He bestows abundant mercy through His Church. Do we want to receive His mercy through the Church, God’s chosen dispenser of mercy? Or do we want God to show mercy directly to us? Likewise Naaman wanted to receive mercy personally from Elijah. Naaman was too proud to receive mercy and healing in a way that seemed less catered to his wishes (2 Kgs 5:5ff).

We often think it’s our choice to serve God or not. This is partially true, as God has granted us free will to make such life-changing choices (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1730-1731, 1993). But first, God has chosen us and loved us (1 Jn 4:19). Accept His choice of you, as well as His choice of how He wishes for you to serve Him. May the mercy of God flow into you, and then through you to a hurting world.

Prayer: Father, thank You for choosing me. I ratify Your choice by freely saying "Yes" to You. Use me and use me up.

Promise: "May the Lord reward you generously for what you have done this day." —1 Sm 24:20

CROWDED CONDITIONS
"A great crowd followed Him from Galilee." —Mark 3:7

Jesus usually healed people in crowded conditions, such as when the press of the crowd was so great that He had to get into a boat to avoid being pushed into the water (Mk 3:9). The woman with the twelve-year hemorrhage had to fight her way through a pushing and shoving crowd to touch Jesus’ garment and be healed (Mk 5:30-31).

Crowd control was also a problem for those who tried to touch the tassel of Jesus’ cloak to receive healing (Mk 6:55-56). The men carrying the paralytic couldn’t even get close to Jesus because of the crowd (Mk 2:2ff), but had to make a hole in the roof and lower the man through it.

Healing still takes place in crowded conditions. The crowd for us is not so much outside as inside. Sin, fear, doubt, self-hatred, jealousy, unforgiveness, bitterness, and pride try to crowd out healing. We must fight our way through a crowd of interior obstacles to receive Jesus’ healing. Stand out in the crowd. Touch Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, on this Day of prayer and penance for the unborn and the protection of human life and dignity, hear and answer our prayers. Grace us to not let ourselves be intimidated, blocked, or discouraged.

Promise: "My wanderings You have counted; my tears are stored in Your flask; are they not recorded in Your book? Then do my enemies turn back, when I call upon You." —Ps 56:9-10

Praise: Crowded with thoughts of fear, anxiety, and distress, Lisa received a healing at Mass during the "Our Father" when she recited the phrase, "Deliver us from evil."

UNITED AGAINST JESUS
"[The Pharisees] immediately began to plot with the Herodians how they might destroy [Jesus]." —Mark 3:6

The Pharisees were a holy religious group who were zealous for the God of Israel (see Mt 5:20). The Herodians were a secular political group loyal to King Herod. The Pharisees opposed the Roman occupation of Israel, while the Herodians were not opposed. The Pharisees and the Herodians were two groups that had little in common. Yet they began to work together because they both opposed Jesus. The Pharisees would likely not have worked with the Herodians but for their desire to stop Jesus. The same happened with Pilate and Herod, who had been enemies but became friends in their opposition to Jesus (Lk 23:7-12).

Who would you never imagine that you could work with? If you don’t fix your eyes on Jesus (Heb 12:2), deny yourself, pick up your cross and follow in Jesus’ footsteps (Lk 9:23), you might eventually find yourself preferring to work with that group of people rather than turning to Jesus. Would you ever join forces with Goliath, who insulted the Lord? (see 1 Sm 17:45)

Judas chose to work with those who opposed Jesus rather than bringing his questions directly to Jesus. There is a Judas within us, lurking to gain control of our lives. There is a civil war ever ready to break out in our hearts (Jas 4:1). But the Lord wants to train our hands for battle, our fingers for victory in the spiritual war (Ps 144:1-2). “Stretch out your hand” to Jesus (Mk 3:5), not to those opposed to Him.

Prayer: Jesus, You declared that we are either for You or against You (Mt 12:30). Grant that I may always be for You.

Promise: "Blessed be the Lord, my Rock, Who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war." —Ps 144:1

Praise: St. Ambrose wrote that St. Agnes "went to the place of execution more cheerfully than others go to their wedding."

STOP CRYING
"How long will you grieve for Saul, whom I have rejected as king of Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and be on your way." —1 Samuel 16:1

Many Spirit-filled Christians are grieving because of the condition of the Church. They’re very disappointed in their pastors. They see the demonic strongholds in the Church. They lament the cooling of the Christian faith through secular humanism.

God’s word to us is: “Stop crying and start leading people to the Holy Spirit.” Like Samuel, we are to fill our horns with oil and get going. The One in us is greater than the one in the world (1 Jn 4:4). We are baptized into the Body of Christ and members of His Church. We should attack the gates of hell, which cannot prevail against us (Mt 16:18). As we remain “in Christ” (2 Cor 5:17), Satan will be shedding more tears than we are.

Remember, we don’t just have a chance to win; we have already won in Jesus’ death and Resurrection. Victory is assured because our victory in Jesus is final. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rm 8:31) “We are more than conquerors because of Him Who has loved us” (Rm 8:37). Even when we let the devil win temporarily, we can repent and let the Lord make “all things work together for the good of those who love” God (Rm 8:28). All the problems in the world and in the Church ain’t nothin’ the Holy Spirit can’t handle.

Prayer: Father, put a smile on my face, a spring in my step, and joy in my heart. Thank You for Jesus' victory.

Promise: "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is Lord even of the sabbath." —Mk 2:27-28

Praise: Pope St. Fabian was lauded by St. Cyprian as "an incomparable man, the glory of whose death corresponded with the holiness of his life."

HOW LOVE OBEYS
"Saul answered Samuel: 'I did indeed obey the Lord.' " —1 Samuel 15:20

After blatantly disobeying God, Saul maintained he was obedient. This is typical behavior for human beings, even for Christians. For example, some Catholic Christians miss Sunday Mass, contracept, ingest pornography on TV, videos, or online, or are racially prejudiced. Then, after committing these serious sins, they go to Holy Communion as if they were obedient to the Lord.

Many Christians, like Saul, believe the Lord’s commands are relative and general rather than absolute and specific. When we maintain that we obey God “for the most part,” this is more accurately called “disobedience.” The Lord commands us to obey Him carefully and exactly (Dt 5:32-33) without “turning aside to the right or to the left” (Dt 5:32). The Lord came not to abolish but to fulfill “the smallest part of a letter” of the Law (Mt 5:18). Jesus obeyed His Father in detail. He did nothing and said nothing except what the Father told Him (Jn 5:19; 12:49).

When you love someone, you care about the details of expressing that love. You want everything to be perfect for the one you love. Obey Jesus accordingly.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to give me such love that I will obey You in detail.

Promise: "The day will come, however, when the Groom will be taken away from them; on that day they will fast." —Mk 2:20

Praise: Anna has been faithful to the ministry of bringing the Eucharist to shut-ins for many years.

(Don't let cabin fever get you down. Plan now to get renewed in your relationship with the Lord. See our website for a list of wonderful retreats we have planned for the spring and summer!)

TITLE INSURANCE
"Look! There is the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world." —John 1:29

The Holy Spirit inspired St. John to pack his Gospel with titles of Jesus. Praying and praising Jesus by speaking His titles and meditating upon them is insurance against taking Jesus for granted. It’s a great way to deepen our relationship with Him.

Among other titles, John refers to Jesus as:

  • the Word of God (Jn 1:1) and Word-Made-Man (Jn 1:14),
  • “Lamb of God” (Jn 1:29),
  • God’s “Chosen One” (Jn 1:34),
  • Rabbi, (and also Teacher) (Jn 1:38),
  • “the Messiah” (Jn 1:41),
  • Son of God and King of Israel (Jn 1:18, 49),
  • “the Son of Man” (Jn 1:51),
  • “the Bread of Life” (Jn 6:35, 48),
  • “Light of the World” (Jn 8:12),
  • “I AM” (Jn 8:28; see also Ex 3:14),
  • “Lord” (Jn 9:38),
  • “Good Shepherd” (Jn 10:11, 14),
  • “the Resurrection and the Life” (Jn 11:25),
  • “the Way, and the Truth, and the Life” (Jn 14:6),
  • “the Vine” (Jn 15:5),
  • “the King of the Jews” (Jn 19:19), and
  • “my Lord and my God!” (Jn 20:28)

There are many other Scriptural titles of Jesus. These titles combat deception and encourage truth. Praise Jesus by His titles.

Prayer: Jesus, Lamb of God, I worship You with my whole heart.

Promise: "I will make you a light to the nations, that My salvation may reach to the ends of the earth." —Is 49:6

Praise: Praise Jesus, "the First and the Last and the One Who lives" (Rv 1:17-18).

THE DIFFERENCE
"There was no other Israelite handsomer than Saul; he stood head and shoulders above the people." —1 Samuel 9:2

Saul was the most handsome man in the entire nation of Israel. He was anointed king. This also made him the richest and most powerful man in the nation. Saul had so much going for him, yet committed suicide after years of being trapped in self-hatred (see 1 Sm 15:17), violence, and eventually the occult (see 1 Sm 28:8ff).

Levi was probably not as handsome, rich, or powerful as Saul, but he was very wealthy and influential in his position as a tax-collector. Like Saul, he was among the “shakers and the movers” in the worldly society. Like Saul, Levi was also trapped in sin. Unlike Saul, Levi did not come to a tragic end. Levi left his big job and big money to follow Jesus (Mk 2:14). The Spirit eventually inspired Levi (St. Matthew) to compile the opening Gospel in the New Testament. Finally, Jesus took Levi to be with Him forever in heaven.

Levi and Saul had much in common throughout their lives, but Levi ended in glory while Saul ended in despair and disgrace. The difference between these two men was repentance. Levi repented and Saul did not. That made all the difference in this world and in the next. Repent! (Mt 3:2, RSV-CE)

Prayer: Father, may I follow Jesus now before it's too late.

Promise: "People who are healthy do not need a doctor; sick people do. I have come to call sinners, not the self-righteous." —Mk 2:17

Praise: St. Anthony the Abbot removed himself from the world for God, and his godliness drew the worldly to him.

OUT OF ORDER
"The people, however, refused to listen to Samuel's warning and said, 'Not so! There must be a king over us. We too must be like other nations.' " —1 Samuel 8:19-20

The Israelites demanded to be governed by a king. This was not God’s will, but the people refused to listen. Many Christians today have also accepted social structures which are not God’s will. For example, many Christian couples don’t accept God’s order for the family. The husband is not considered head of his wife (1 Cor 11:3). Parents are not regarded as the primary educators of their children (see Dt 6:7). Many parishes are either tyrannies or democracies, while God’s will is that the Church be led by servant-leaders appointed by God’s authority, who lovingly lay down their lives for the parishioners, and to whom the parishioners submit.

When we accept structures which are not God’s will, we may at first think we’re protecting ourselves from abuses in the exercise of authority. Actually we are harming ourselves and others by doing things our way instead of God's way.

Husbands, repent of not loving and leading your wives according to God’s plan for marriage (Eph 5:25). Wives, repent of not being submissive to your husbands (Eph 5:22). Parents, repent of abandoning your children to the school systems, mass media, video games, smartphones, and TV. Parishioners, repent of rebellion and disobedience. When we live according to God’s order, we will see God transform our world.

Prayer: Father, may I do it Your way.

Promise: "When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralyzed man, 'My son, your sins are forgiven.' " —Mk 2:5

Praise: Apathy paralyzed Martha until reading the Scriptures and attending more weekday Masses rekindled her faith.

SOLIDARITY
"Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out His hand [and] touched him." —Mark 1:41

We have many lepers in our society although the disease is not common. Today’s lepers are any who are untouchable, incurable, or alienated. These people have resisted all attempts to love and heal them. Medical care and even healing prayer cannot heal a leper. Lepers must be touched. We must become vulnerable and even expose ourselves to leprosy. In fact, we must not only accept the possibility of becoming leprous, we must actually become lepers. Jesus began to touch lepers, and soon He Himself was the outcast, alienated, and despised.

We begin in service, move to vulnerability, and finally reach solidarity. Jesus saved the world not only by helping us or even endangering Himself. He saved us by becoming one of us (Jn 1:14). He emptied Himself (Phil 2:7), and became like us in all things but sin (Heb 2:17; 4:15). “He made Himself poor though He was rich” (2 Cor 8:9). “For our sakes God made Him Who did not know sin to be sin, so that in Him we might become the very holiness of God” (2 Cor 5:21).

Solidarity is the way of Christ. We free the poor not so much by helping them but by becoming one of them. We empower the powerless not by sharing the power but by sharing the weakness of the cross (2 Cor 13:4). We deliver the oppressed by walking in the steps of the crucified Savior.

Prayer: Jesus, show me how Your Incarnation applies to my life. Teach me what You taught St. Francis and Mother Teresa.

HARD HEARING
"Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening." —1 Samuel 3:9

It is extremely important for us to hear God. The Lord has promised: “Had they stood in My council, and did they but proclaim to My people My words, they would have brought them back from evil ways and from their wicked deeds” (Jer 23:22). By hearing God, we can change the world, for His words are “living and effective” (Heb 4:12).

However, it is extremely difficult for us to hear God because:

  • of our fallen nature,
  • many of us are “not familiar with the Lord” (1 Sm 3:7),
  • “a revelation of the Lord” is “uncommon and vision infrequent” in our culture of death (1 Sm 3:1), and
  • even leaders of the Church are susceptible to being spiritually asleep and blind so that they don’t help us (see 1 Sm 3:2).

Nevertheless, the Lord got through to Samuel and thereby converted “the whole Israelite population” (1 Sm 7:2). Although we may be as confused as the child Samuel, the Lord in His mercy continues to open the ears of the spiritually deaf. There is hope not only because God speaks, but also because He removes the many, formidable obstacles to hearing Him.

Therefore, if you don’t hear God, admit it. Repent of your part in this. Get as much help from the Church as you can. Ask God to speak to you. Read the teachings of the Church, especially the Scriptures. Be quiet. Simplify your life. Try to hear God. God will speak to your heart in “a still small voice” (1 Kgs 19:12, RSV-CE).

Prayer: Father, open my ears that I may hear.

Promise: Jesus "went into their synagogues preaching the good news and expelling demons." —Mk 1:39

Praise: Melanie frequently had let the TV play to fill the silent void in her house. When Jesus came into her life in a greater fullness, she turned off her TV and found peace and comfort in His presence alone.

ORDINARY AND NEW
"A completely new teaching..." —Mark 1:27

We begin the portion of the Church year called “Ordinary Time,” which means “ordered time” rather than “humdrum time.” Today’s Eucharistic readings proclaim that “ordinary” life in the Lord is new, exciting, and fulfilling. For example, the citizens of Capernaum were “amazed” at Jesus and His “completely new teaching in a spirit of authority” (Mk 1:27). In today’s first reading, Hannah and Elkanah could not conceive a child, but then they rejoiced (1 Sm 2:1ff) at the new life she conceived (1 Sm 1:20).

Perhaps you’ve suffered through a long, dry spell, and this year looks like more of the same. However, this ordinary time is a time for a new beginning, a fresh start. The Lord declares: “Remember not the events of the past, the things of long ago consider not; see, I am doing something new!” (Is 43:18-19)

God is the Creator, and He is always creating anew. The Spirit renews, that is, makes new, the earth (Ps 104:30). Be open to God’s “completely new” works this year in your parenting, marriage, childbearing, couple or family prayer, vocation, job performance, personal holiness, Christian community, evangelization, studies, etc. This is the year to step out in faith and live “the radical newness of” our Baptism (Lay Members of Christ’s Faithful People, Pope St. John Paul II, 10).

Jesus says: “See, I make all things new!” (Rv 21:5) Accept Jesus as Lord of your life and be “a new creation” in Him (2 Cor 5:17). “All that matters is that one is created anew” (Gal 6:15).

Prayer: Father, I "lay aside" my old way of life and my "old self," and "put on that new" self You give me (Eph 4:22, 24).

Promise: "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of Him." —1 Sm 1:17

Praise: St. Hilary had great zeal to defend the true Catholic faith. As a result of his teaching and his perseverance, all of Gaul (France) was freed from heretical teaching.

THE YEAR OF REPENTANCE, FRUITFULNESS, AND JOY
"Hannah, why do you weep, and why do you refuse to eat? Why do you grieve?" —1 Samuel 1:8

As we begin the new year, the Lord commands us to be “fishers of men” and women (Mk 1:17). We are to be fruitful in leading others to Christ (see Jn 15:5). However, many of us were not very fruitful in 2025 and have not changed anything for 2026. We may be spiritually barren as Hannah was physically barren.

If we don’t repent and begin to share our love for Jesus with other people, we may become like Hannah in other ways. In addition to being barren, Hannah was so despondent she refused to eat (1 Sm 1:7). We likewise may lose our joy (see Ps 51:14) and become spiritually anorexic if we don’t bear fruit evangelically. Many Christians today are noticeably sad. Young people notice this and see church as a dead, joyless place. Many Christians go to church only to fulfill their “Sunday obligation.” They don’t understand the Mass is a sacrifice. They’re not offering their “bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God” (Rm 12:1). They aren’t hungry for the spiritual nourishment of God’s Word and Holy Communion.

We can be like Hannah in more ways than one. We must repent, commit our lives to Jesus, and share our faith. Then we will come to life.

Prayer: Father, may I reap the greatest harvest this year.

Promise: "This is the time of fulfillment. The reign of God is at hand! Reform your lives and believe in the gospel!" —Mk 1:15

Praise: At the age of sixty-nine, St. Marguerite walked some one-hundred and sixty miles from Montreal to Quebec City to found a community of sisters at her bishop's request.

IGNITION
"After Jesus was baptized, He came directly out of the water. Suddenly the sky opened." —Matthew 3:16

Jesus was thirty years old (Lk 3:23) when He was baptized in the River Jordan. His life was thirty years in the making, and He hadn’t even left home. He hadn’t gathered disciples or done great works. He was unknown and seemed to have hardly begun to fulfill the Father’s plan for His life.

Then Jesus came to the Jordan River and was baptized by St. John the Baptizer. “Suddenly the sky opened and He saw the Spirit of God descend like a dove and hover over Him. With that, a voice from the heavens said, ‘This is My beloved Son. My favor rests on Him’ ” (Mt 3:16-17). After being on the launching pad for thirty years, Jesus took off like a rocket. He was burning to light a fire on the earth (Lk 12:49). Jesus exploded into the three greatest years of ministry in history. He ran even to His death on Calvary and His Resurrection from the dead (see Phil 2:8-11).

God the Father has a great plan for you, His beloved son or daughter. Are you still on the launching pad? Are you dawdling? On this last day of Christmas, renew your Baptism; hear your Father’s voice speaking of His love for you; explode into a year of grace; fulfill the Father’s plan for your life.

Prayer: Father, speak to me. Affirm Your love for me again and again.

Promise: "God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good works and healing all who were in the grip of the devil, and God was with Him." —Acts 10:38

Praise: "The voice of the Lord is mighty; the voice of the Lord is majestic" (Ps 29:4). "In His temple all say, 'Glory!' " (Ps 29:9)
