WASTE OR SACRIFICE?
“Bring me the head of John the Baptizer on a platter.” —Matthew 14:8

Today’s Mass readings focus on two holy men whose lives were disregarded by powerful people. Jeremiah’s life was on the brink of being terminated by angry religious leaders (Jer 26:11ff). Mercifully, his life was spared (Jer 26:24). St. John the Baptizer’s life was sacrificed as a wasteful act by King Herod to reward his wife’s daughter for a dance (Mt 14:10ff).

Think of a perfect, unblemished lamb at the time of Christ. The baby lamb grows for a year and then is brought to the Temple to be sacrificed. Its life exists for one purpose only: to be ended early in sacrifice as an act of worship to God. Jesus Himself was the unblemished “Lamb of God” (Jn 1:29), Who came down from heaven to be offered for our salvation. His life was sacrificed on a cross to satisfy the jealous religious leaders.

Now think of your own life. Has your life been wasted by others who do not care about your welfare? If so, can you offer your life to God as a living sacrifice (Rm 12:1), an act of worship to God?

It may seem that you have spent your life in vain (Is 49:4), to no purpose. Perhaps your life has even been misused by the wicked of the world. Yet your sacrificed life, when offered to God, is of inestimable value. With the Lord, nothing is wasted (Mt 14:20). Offer your entire life to God as a sacrifice of praise (Ps 50:23). Then your life will be a hidden treasure in His Kingdom (Mt 13:44).

Prayer: Father, may I never waste even a day of my life when instead I could be sacrificially loving and serving You.

Promise: “The Lord hears the poor, and His own who are in bonds He spurns not.” —Ps 69:34

WHAT’S RIGHT WITH YOU?
“When Jeremiah finished speaking all that the Lord bade him speak to all the people, the priests and prophets laid hold of him, crying, ‘You must be put to death!’ ” —Jeremiah 26:8

What would happen if you imitated Jeremiah? What if you walked into church and announced, “God told me to tell you that if you do not obey Him, but continue to disobey, and do not repent, your lives will be desolate, and people will use your name to curse one another!” (see Jer 26:4-6) You might get some violent reactions, as Jeremiah did. People might say “What’s wrong with you?” and wish you were dead (see Jer 26:8-9).

Jesus calls us to be “the salt of the earth” (Mt 5:13). Salt preserves and adds flavor. However, people have open sores due to unrepented sin, and salt doesn’t feel too good on an open sore. We’re also called to be the “light of the world” (Mt 5:14). Light helps us see and keeps us from stumbling and hurting ourselves. Yet people are spiritually dormant due to unrepented sin — and light is very irritating to a person who wants to sleep (see Jn 3:19-20).

Usually, if someone is upset with us, we think we must have done something wrong. In fact, the reverse may be true, that is, we may have done something right! They wanted to kill Jesus for resurrecting St. Lazarus (Jn 11:53). They even wanted to kill Lazarus (Jn 12:10-11), because he was walking, living proof of the life-giving power of Christ.

Prayer: Father, may I have the same relationship to the world as You do (Jn 3:16) and as Jesus does (1 Jn 4:17).

Promise: “In Your great kindness answer me with Your constant help.” —Ps 69:14

Praise: St. Ignatius of Loyola formulated practical rules for discernment of spirits, which aid people in hearing and heeding the voice of God.

GLOBAL WARMING
“That is how it will be at the end of the world. Angels will go out and separate the wicked from the just and hurl the wicked into the fiery furnace.” —Matthew 13:49-50

Much attention is paid to global warming. Scientists warn that the temperature of Earth is rising, polar and glacial ice are melting, and rising sea levels may flood coastal cities. People are already afraid and anxious about the future of planet earth amid global warming, toxic nuclear waste, holes in the ozone layer, and numerous other lethal problems, such as potential nuclear wars.

Sadly, too little attention is paid to a different source of warming. There is a “fiery furnace” (Mt 13:50), where “the fire is never extinguished” (Mk 9:48). Jesus warns of far greater eventualities: “on the earth, nations will be in anguish, distraught at the roaring of the sea and the waves. Men will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the earth” (Lk 21:25-26).

Jesus plainly states that planet “Earth will pass away” (Lk 21:33). We are called by Jesus to be aware of a much greater, more certain catastrophic warming: the fiery furnace of hell. Hell is not a popular topic in our secular culture, nor is sin. However, Jesus speaks regularly of hell and sin. Jesus did not come to condemn us to hell; “there is no condemnation now for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Rm 8:1). To whom should we listen: the voices of the secular culture or the voice of Jesus, Who knows about eternal salvation? (see Jn 3:12) Listen to Jesus. Accept His saving grace. Let Him spare you from “the fires of hell.”

Prayer: “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins. Save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.”

Promise: “Indeed, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in My hand.” —Jer 18:6

Praise: St. Peter Chrysologus asked, “Why...are you so worthless in your own eyes and yet so precious to God?”

HOSPITALITY PLUS
“The Lord in reply said to her: ‘Martha, Martha, you are anxious and upset about many things; one thing only is required. Mary has chosen the better portion and she shall not be deprived of it.’ ” —Luke 10:41-42

In St. Luke’s Gospel, loving God with all our hearts and our neighbor as ourselves is often a matter of offering hospitality. That’s what the Good Samaritan did for the man who fell prey to robbers (Lk 10:34-35). Hospitality was how St. Martha showed her love to Jesus (Lk 10:38). Luke teaches that hospitality is one of the most important expressions of love.

After extolling the merits of hospitality, Luke hits us with the revelation that there is something even better. The portion better than hospitality is sitting at the Lord’s feet and listening to His words (Lk 10:39). Listening to Jesus’ words is the ultimate, the key to the meaning of life, the most awesome privilege possible for human beings.

Do you listen to the Lord throughout the day? Do you set a time each day when you focus on listening to the Lord? Are you “overjoyed to hear” Jesus’ voice? (Jn 3:29) “By waiting and by calm you shall be saved, in quiet and in trust your strength lies” (Is 30:15). Listen to the still, small voice of God (1 Kgs 19:12). Jesus is God’s beloved Son. “Listen to Him” (Mk 9:7).

Prayer: Father, Your words are “spirit and life” (Jn 6:63). May I listen accordingly.

Promise: “I am the Resurrection and the Life: whoever believes in Me, though he should die, will come to life; and whoever is alive and believes in Me will never die.” —Jn 11:25-26

Praise: St. Martha exercised both her gift of hospitality and her ability to listen and trust in her Lord (see Jn 11:27).

APOSTATES
“The Son of Man will dispatch His angels to collect from His kingdom all who draw others to apostasy.” —Matthew 13:41

At the end of the world, the Lord will hurl into hell those who have drawn others to apostasy (Mt 13:42). After they’ve done their “dirty work,” then God puts them out of business! Why doesn’t God deal with those who confuse His people before they do their damage? It’s because He wants to give them maximum time to repent (see 2 Pt 3:9). Therefore, we all have to suffer while waiting for those who draw others to apostasy to be drawn to Jesus.

While we wait in the midst of confusion, lies, and apostasy, the Lord protects us by sending the Holy Spirit to the Church. The Spirit:

1)      raises up teachers who interpret the Bible rightly,

2)      works through the Pope infallibly in matters of faith and morals, and

3)      gives to members of the Church the gift of discernment of spirits (1 Cor 12:10). Because the Spirit works through the Church, we have all the means of grace available to resist apostasy and even reject the mass apostasy at the end of the world (2 Thes 2:3).

At this point in time, the Lord is combatting the spirit of the antichrist by pouring forth the Spirit of Truth (see Jn 16:13). The Lord desires to defeat His enemies by converting them. While guarding us from apostasy, the Lord keeps apostates alive so that all will “be saved and come to know the truth” (1 Tm 2:4).

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for delaying Your Second Coming so that as many as possible will be saved.

Promise: “Is it not You alone, O Lord, our God, to Whom we look? You alone have done all these things.” —Jer 14:22

Praise: For more than fifty years Matthew not only resisted but fought the Church, until he finally accepted the grace of repentance and accepted Christ.

PERMEATION
“Eventually the whole mass of dough began to rise.” —Matthew 13:33

In our culture of death, many Christians are preoccupied with crisis intervention so as to minimize damages inflicted on an eroding, lukewarm Christianity. Although the ones doing this are often making heroic sacrifices, the Lord, being all-powerful, is not interested in mere damage control.

Some Christians, more bold and less tamed by secular humanism, dare to challenge our anti-Christian culture. They intend to infiltrate the world and compete with it. They set up Christian businesses, view Christian content on their smartphones, watch Christian TV programs, read Christian newspapers, etc. These are steps in the right direction, but the Lord wants so much more.

The all-powerful, all-loving God wants us not merely to infiltrate the world but to permeate it. We are to act as the leaven, through which “eventually the whole mass of dough” begins to rise (Mt 13:33). We are to turn “the world upside down” (Acts 17:6, RSV-CE). We are to flip the secular humanistic culture by discovering and inventing the means of permeating it with the Gospel (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 899). This seems impossible, but “nothing is impossible with God” (Lk 1:37).

Prayer: Jesus, every knee will bend and every tongue proclaim that You are Lord (Phil 2:10-11).

Promise: “I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to Me, says the Lord; to be My people, My renown, My praise, My beauty.” —Jer 13:11

Praise: Lisa teaches her students to ask the Lord even for the grace to want to turn from our old ways.

FEELING INADEQUATE?
“I am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act.” —1 Kings 3:7

Do you feel inadequate? Maybe you don’t have the slightest idea how you should act in a certain situation or in most situations. Like Solomon, ask the Lord for an understanding heart (1 Kgs 3:9). The Lord will make you more than adequate.

Some of you feel it’s too late. Your life is already in shambles. You’ve been abused, broken, and shattered. However, the Lord promises to make “all things work together for the good of those who love” Him (Rm 8:28). Give your brokenness to Jesus, and He will use it as raw material for a miracle. In Him, you can do all things (see Phil 4:13).

You may feel that your resources, education, energy, etc. are inadequate. Nevertheless, the Lord tells you that you can purchase the most precious treasure of all, that is, the kingdom of God. He has made it affordable for you. God’s kingdom does not cost a certain amount but a certain percentage: 100% (Mt 13:44-46). You can purchase it but can’t purchase anything else if you do.

You don’t have to feel inadequate. In Christ, you have understanding, miracles, strength (Phil 4:13), hope (Col 1:27), energy (Col 1:29), joy (Jn 15:11), and peace (Jn 16:33). In Christ, you have God’s kingdom. You are more than adequate.

Prayer: Father, may I rejoice in my exalted position as Your child (see 2 Cor 6:18).

Promise: “The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant’s search for fine pearls. When he found one really valuable pearl, he went back and put up for sale all that he had and bought it.” —Mt 13:45-46

Praise: Praise Jesus, “the Resurrection and the Life” (Jn 11:25), Whose name is exalted above the heavens!

THE HEAD OF THE CLASS
“We believe and so we speak, knowing that He Who raised up the Lord Jesus will raise us up along with Jesus.”—2 Corinthians 4:13-14

St. James must have been one powerful apostle! When “King Herod started to harass” the Church, his first move was to cut off James’ head (Acts 12:1, 2). “This pleased certain of the Jews” (Acts 12:3). Only after James was killed did Herod turn his attention to arresting St. Peter (Acts 12:3). James, who was the first apostle to die for love of Jesus, was obviously one giant headache for Herod and the Jewish leaders. James had the courage and the faith to speak out in the name of Jesus, knowing that he would share in the Resurrection of Jesus (2 Cor 4:13-14).

Earlier, James was a headache for the other apostles (Mt 20:24). He sought to be elevated above them. Jesus patiently explained to James and the others that the way to aspire to greatness is to humbly descend into service (Mt 20:26-27). James eventually took Jesus’ admonition to heart. After Pentecost, James did not try to preserve his own life. He was constantly teaching the people about the Good News of Jesus the Messiah (Acts 5:42) and working signs and wonders among the people (Acts 5:12). With great faith, James gave his own life for love of God and His people (Mt 20:28). Like James, may our lives be so powerful in Jesus that we are a headache to those who oppose Jesus and His kingdom.

Prayer: Father, may I be fearless in the Holy Spirit as St. James was.

Promise: “This treasure we possess in earthen vessels, to make it clear that its surpassing power comes from God and not from us.” —2 Cor 4:7

Praise: St. James, “Son of Thunder” (Mk 3:17), was the first apostle to give his life in martyrdom for Jesus (Acts 12:1).

GROUND FOR HOPE
“What was sown on good soil is the man who hears the message and takes it in.” —Matthew 13:23

Human beings have a natural desire to “see the world.” For centuries, young people have left home to “see the world.” People join the army, watch TV, peruse their electronic devices, or travel to “see the world.” Jesus, however, is the only Way to truly “see the world.” He alone can prevent us from projecting our own illusions onto our worldview and from being propagandized by commercialized or ideological interests.

When Jesus takes us on a world tour, He won’t take us up “a very high mountain” and display before us “all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence” (Mt 4:8). That’s the world tour the devil presented to Jesus in tempting Him. Jesus, in His love for the poor, will take us on a world tour of the starving, the victims of war, the aborted, and the refugees. Jesus will let us see the world as sheep without a shepherd (Mt 9:36). Jesus, not being One to gloss over sin, will show us the wages of sin, that is, the “culture of death” (see Rm 6:23).

As Jesus continues to show us the world, He will also show us shepherds after His own heart (Jer 3:15) feeding the sheep with the precious, life-giving Word of God. He will show us business owners putting people ahead of profits, politicians standing up for God, fathers sharing with their children the teachings of the Church, mothers softly singing hymns of praise while nursing their babies, priests and catechists fearlessly proclaiming His Word, and simple people poring over their well-worn Bibles.

“See the world.” There is hope even in the “culture of death” because God’s Word is falling on good ground (see Mt 13:23).

Prayer: Father, I will fight to receive and give Your life-giving Word in a “culture of death.”

Promise: “Return, rebellious children, says the Lord, for I am your Master.” —Jer 3:14

Praise: St. Sharbel, a Lebanese priest, lived as a hermit the last twenty-three years of his life.

KNOW OR NO KNOW?
“To you has been given a knowledge of the mysteries of the reign of God, but it has not been given to the others. To the man who has, more will be given until he grows rich.” —Matthew 13:11-12

Now more than ever, the Lord wants to give us “a knowledge of the mysteries of the reign of God” (Mt 13:11). The Lord commands us: “Call to Me, and I will answer you; I will tell to you things great beyond reach of your knowledge” (Jer 33:3).

If you are considered insignificant by the world, Jesus is especially interested in revealing to you the glory of His kingdom. Jesus continues to rejoice “in the Holy Spirit” and say: “I offer You praise, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because what You have hidden from the learned and the clever You have revealed to the merest children” (Lk 10:21).

If you want to hear God, go to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and receive Holy Communion daily or as often as possible. Forgive those who have offended you. Go to Confession monthly. Pray at a certain time each day. Pray especially with your spouse and family (see Mt 18:20). Be quiet for a little while each day. Jesus is whispering to you (see 1 Kgs 19:12). When you hear Him, Jesus will say to you: “Blest are your eyes because they see and blest are your ears because they hear. I assure you, many a prophet and many a saint longed to see what you see but did not see it, to hear what you hear but did not hear it” (Mt 13:16-17).

Prayer: Father, say anything to me — even things I don’t want to hear.

Promise: “I remember the devotion of your youth, how you loved Me as a bride.” —Jer 2:2

Praise: St. Bridget, patroness of Europe, was the mother of eight, including a canonized saint, St. Catherine of Sweden.

THE ENERGIZER
“She ran.” —John 20:2

St. Mary Magdalene had energy to burn. She came to Jesus’ tomb “early in the morning on the first day of the week, while it was still dark” (Jn 20:1). When she saw that the stone had been moved away, she ran off to tell Simon Peter and the other disciple (Jn 20:2). Then she ran back to the tomb and stood there weeping (Jn 20:11). Next, she volunteered to single-handedly carry off Jesus’ body, if only she was told where it was (Jn 20:15). After recognizing the risen Jesus, she made another run for it to tell the disciples: “I have seen the Lord!” (Jn 20:18)

What was the source of Mary Magdalene’s energy? Her love for Jesus impelled her (2 Cor 5:14). Christ’s energy was “so powerful a force within” her (Col 1:29). She was driven to seek Him Whom her heart loved (Sg 3:1-2).

What was the source of Mary Magdalene’s love? She loved because Jesus first loved us (1 Jn 4:19). Mary Magdalene received her love by standing at the foot of the cross, in the shadow of Jesus’ crucified love (Jn 19:25). She saw the blood and water flow from the pierced side of Jesus (Jn 19:34). Mary Magdalene received her love from the Fountain of love, from Jesus’ crucified body and pierced heart. Christ’s love impelled her because at Calvary she had “reached the conviction that since [Jesus] died for all, all died” (2 Cor 5:14). She decided no longer to live for herself, but for Him Who for her sake died and was raised up (2 Cor 5:15). This response to God’s love impelled and energized her.

Go to the crucified Jesus. Run for the risen Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may I always have the same motives St. Mary Magdalene had on Resurrection day.

Promise: “This means that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old order has passed away; now all is new!” —2 Cor 5:17

Praise: St. Mary Magdalene’s love so freed her that she stood at the foot of Christ’s cross and soon gloried in His Resurrection.

ADOPTED BY THE BEST FAMILY EVER
“Extending His hand toward His disciples, He said: ‘There are My mother and My brothers. Whoever does the will of My heavenly Father is brother and sister and mother to Me.’ ” —Matthew 12:49-50

Many people delight at the thought of marrying into a rich family. They might imagine: “Wow! Suddenly I’ll have cars, homes, money, vacations, possessions, status, and prosperity that were never possible before this marriage. I’ll do anything they ask, make any changes necessary, just to get into this family.”

A common theme for movies is to show an orphanage full of children dreaming of being adopted into a loving family. These children profess that they’ll do anything the family wants just to be taken home with the new family.

What Good News Jesus announces to us today! He is God (Jn 1:1). He has the ultimate family: the family of God (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2233). Moreover, His condition for our adoption is that we do the will of God the Father (Mt 12:50). What an offer! Jesus actually wants us to share in the intimate joy of His family. God’s desire for us is expressed thus: “He calls together all [people], scattered and divided by sin, into the unity of His family, the Church” (Catechism, 1). Jesus cherishes our company so much that He wants to become our Brother (Mk 3:33-35; Lk 8:21). Thank Jesus forever for His gracious love, and joyfully do the will of God the Father (Ps 40:9).

Prayer: Father, thank You for adopting me as Your child through my Baptism (Rm 6:3-4; 8:15) and including me in Your will.

Promise: “Who is there like You, the God Who removes guilt and pardons sin for the remnant of His inheritance; Who does not persist in anger forever, but delights rather in clemency, and will again have compassion on us, treading underfoot our guilt?” —Mi 7:18-19

Praise: St. Lawrence was so mature in his faith that he was able to decide on a religious vocation by age sixteen.

JESUS ON JUDGMENT
“The Lord has a plea against His people, and He enters into trial.” —Micah 6:2

Jesus promises that on Judgment Day we will be judged on whether we repented at His preaching (Mt 12:41). In some sense, Jesus is preaching in the circumstances of everyday life, but most literally Jesus Himself is preaching at the Eucharistic liturgy  (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1088). This does not mean that every word the priest or deacon says during the homily is straight from the Lord. But it means that, by virtue of the nature of Jesus’ priesthood and the nature of the liturgy, Jesus the High Priest is working through or even despite the person reading the Scriptures or preaching. On Judgment Day, we will be held accountable for repenting as we heard God’s words in the liturgy.

Also, Jesus promises that on Judgment Day we will be judged on whether we have gone to extremes to listen to His wisdom (Mt 12:42) and act upon it (Jas 1:22). Jesus’ wisdom is available in many ways but especially in the official teaching of His Body, the Church. If we haven’t tried to read the Bible, the Church’s Catechism, the second Vatican Council’s documents, and the papal encyclicals, can we as Catholics say that we have gone to extremes to listen to Jesus’ wisdom?

Let’s repent of spiritual anorexia. Let us hunger for God’s Word (see Mt 4:4). We need repentance and wisdom. Judgment Day comes.

Prayer: Father, I repent of stuffing myself with the things of the flesh and thereby losing my spiritual appetite (see Prv 13:19).

Promise: “You have been told, O man, what is good, and what the Lord requires of you: only to do right and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God.” —Mi 6:8

Praise: Though tortured and exiled several times by his non-Christian opponents, St. Apollinaris, bishop of Ravenna, Italy, persisted in returning to the city to complete his mission.

ROOTS AND WEEDS
“Pull up the weeds and you might take the wheat along with them.” —Matthew 13:29

A farmer tells his farmhands not to weed his field because they may take up the wheat with the weeds. This is an unusual command. If farmers applied this in all cases, all weeding would be prohibited. This command indicates that the root-development of the wheat, the citizens of God’s kingdom (Mt 13:38), is dependent on the presence of the weeds, “the followers of the evil one” (Mt 13:38).

To “be rooted in Him (Christ) and built up in Him, growing ever stronger in faith” (Col 2:7), we must be in the presence of those who are not with the Lord but following the evil one. This gives us opportunities to share and defend our faith. We can forgive these people when they hurt us and love them unconditionally. We can take up our daily crosses (see Lk 9:23) and share in the sufferings of Christ (Col 1:24).

The Lord turns all things to the good for those who love Him (Rm 8:28). Your loving, forgiving, suffering outreach to the weeds root you in Christ in wondrous ways. Thank God for how He can deepen your faith through weeds. Love the weeds, even if they hurt you (see Mt 5:44). Remember you were a weed yourself and would revert to being a weed but for the amazing grace of God. Thank God for not weeding the field until the very end (see 2 Pt 3:9).

Prayer: Father, may my faith be deep enough to persevere through the mass apostasy before the end of the world (see 2 Thes 2:3).

Promise: “Though You are Master of might, You judge with clemency.” —Wis 12:18

Praise: Alleluia! Jesus is risen from the dead! We already share in His Resurrection (Col 3:1). Alleluia!

WORKING AS IF GOD IS WATCHING
“The wicked man boasts, ‘He will not avenge it’; ‘There is no God…’ ” —Psalm 10:4

In today’s readings, the wicked believe that God is passive. They assume God does not see their wicked acts, that “He will not avenge” their wickedness (Ps 10:4). They imagine that God stands aloof and hides from the upright (Ps 10:1). “ ‘There is no God’ sums up [their] thoughts” (Ps 10:4). The wicked believe their triumph is complete, that no one can undermine the evil they have done (Mi 2:4).

Jesus reveals Himself as meek and gentle (Mt 11:29; 12:19-20). He will not break a bruised reed or quench a smoldering wick (Mt 12:20). He waits and shows patience so that all might come to salvation (2 Pt 3:9). Yet the Lord does see (Ps 10:14). The Master has gone on a long journey and has handed over management of His household, His Kingdom on earth, to us, His stewards (Mt 24:45; 25:14). But He most assuredly is coming back, and when He returns, He will demand an account from us (Mt 25:19).

Therefore, let us be busy serving Him, dispensing the ration of grain in due season (Lk 12:42) like Joseph in the Old Testament (Gn 41:47-57). It may seem at present as though God is passive and aloof, as if He is away on “a journey” (Mt 21:33). We might not sense any urgency to serve Him and His people. However, “the time is short” (1 Cor 7:29). The Lord is coming soon. Therefore, serve Him with diligence (Lk 12:36-37).

Prayer: Father, place an urgency in my heart to work for Your harvest (Mt 9:37-38).

Promise: “In His name, the Gentiles will find hope.” —Mt 12:21

Praise: St. Camillus was addicted to gambling until Jesus set him free of his addiction and led him to conversion and faith at the age of twenty-five.

AN OVER-TIME LOSS
“I will add fifteen years to your life.” —Isaiah 38:5

God healed King Hezekiah of a terminal illness and gave him an additional fifteen years of life (Is 38:5). How did Hezekiah use this gift? Three years into his extra fifteen years, Hezekiah, who had been childless, fathered a son, Manasseh, who would succeed him as king of Judah and continue the line which led to Jesus (Mt 1:10, 16). You would think that Hezekiah, who had been one of the few good and godly kings, would spend his remaining twelve years of life (2 Kgs 21:1) training young Manasseh in both the Jewish faith and in how to be a good king. Sadly, it seems that Hezekiah passed little on to his son. Manasseh was possibly the most evil king of Judah, and by the end of his fifty-five year reign, a culture of death had been entrenched in Judah.

What else did Hezekiah do with his final fifteen years of life? “Hezekiah...did not discharge his debt of gratitude, for he had become proud” (2 Chr 32:25). He pridefully aligned himself with Babylon and began the downfall of Israel (2 Kgs 20:12-19). He considered it a good thing that evil would fall on his son Manasseh and his other descendants instead of in his own lifetime (Is 39:8; 2 Kgs 20:17-19). “He built cities for himself” instead of teaching his son the faith (2 Chr 32:29).

Did Hezekiah fall into the trap of thinking that, since God spared him, he was in “good shape” with God and no longer needed to live in fear of the Lord? Did he become complacent and assume that Manasseh would just turn out well despite minimal fathering? Could we be just as complacent? “Do not grow lazy” (Heb 6:12).

Prayer: Jesus, each day may I live as if You were returning tonight.

Promise: “It is mercy I desire and not sacrifice.” —Mt 12:7

Praise: Rhonda, a home-schooling mother, brings her three children to Mass every day. She and her husband make the Mass and the Sacraments the foundation of their children’s education.

NOTHING BUT GRACE
“The inhabitants of the world cannot bring it forth.”—Isaiah 26:18

Isaiah prophesied that God’s people were like a pregnant woman “about to give birth” (Is 26:17). Her water broke, her contractions became more frequent, and her labor pains increased, as she writhed and cried out (Is 26:17-18). Finally, she delivered. But there was no baby. She gave “birth to wind” (Is 26:18).

The point of Isaiah’s prophecy is: “Salvation we have not achieved for the earth, the inhabitants of the world cannot bring it forth” (Is 26:18). In other words: “In no way can a man redeem himself, or pay his own ransom to God” (Ps 49:8). Isaiah also prophesied: “All our good deeds are like polluted rags; we have all withered like leaves” (Is 64:5). Jesus bluntly stated: “Apart from Me you can do nothing” (Jn 15:5).

We are like babies; we are totally dependent on the Lord (see Mt 18:2ff). St. Paul taught: “I repeat, it is owing to His favor that salvation is yours through faith. This is not your own doing, it is God’s gift; neither is it a reward for anything you have accomplished” (Eph 2:8-9). “Everything is grace” (Rm 4:16).

“From His fullness have we all received, grace upon grace” (Jn 1:16, RSV-CE). Grace to you!

Prayer: Father, I rejoice to live in grace.

Promise: “Your souls will find rest, for My yoke is easy and My burden light.” —Mt 11:29-30

Praise: A group of lay Carmelite families spreads the Word of God by composing music, giving concerts at churches, and sharing God’s Word as they travel.

THE SPIRIT OR DARKNESS?
“Father, Lord of heaven and earth, to You I offer praise; for what You have hidden from the learned and the clever You have revealed to the merest children.” —Matthew 11:25

Jesus rejoiced that His Father had hidden certain things “from the learned and the clever.” This does not mean that learning and education are useless or harmful, but that they are limited. God’s revelation transcends the human mind. Therefore, “trust in the Lord with all your heart, on your own intelligence rely not” (Prv 3:5).

Only by the Holy Spirit can we know “what lies at the depths of God” (1 Cor 2:11). Without the movement of the Holy Spirit, the most intelligent and educated people in the world are doomed to ignorance and even confusion, self-deception, and darkness. Therefore, we must cry out for the Holy Spirit to instruct us in everything, remind us of all that Jesus told us (Jn 14:26), and guide us to all truth (Jn 16:13), especially as He speaks through the teachings of the Church and her Bible. The Spirit will not only put ideas in our heads but words in our mouths (see Mt 10:20; 1 Cor 2:13). In the Spirit, we will hear the tiny, whispering sound of the Father’s voice (see 1 Kgs 19:12). “A voice shall sound in your ears: ‘This is the way; walk in it,’ when you would turn to the right or to the left” (Is 30:21).

Repent of your sins, go to Confession, give your life to Jesus. Ask for a renewal of your Baptism and Confirmation. Receive the Holy Spirit and God’s revelation. Receive truth and light.

Prayer: Father, I accept Your grace to stifle my carnal desires and be stirred up in the Spirit (see Gal 5:17).

Promise: “Judgment shall again be with justice, and all the upright of heart shall follow it.” —Ps 94:15

Praise: It was written of St. Bonaventure that “whoever came to know him was drawn to a deep love of him.”

THE MIRACLE OF REPENTANCE
“If the miracles worked in you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they would have reformed in sackcloth and ashes long ago.” —Matthew 11:21

“When much has been given a man, much will be required of him. More will be asked of a man to whom more has been entrusted” (Lk 12:48). Jesus applies this Biblical principle to towns in which He did miracles (see Mt 11:20). If more miracles have been done in our towns, more is expected of us.

We who live in the New Covenant have seen countless people become new creations, born again, in the waters of Baptism.  The people of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum saw nothing as miraculous as that. Jesus said it would be that way when He promised: “I solemnly assure you, the man who has faith in Me will do the works I do, and greater far than these” (Jn 14:12). The miracle-towns of Jesus’ time also never saw the miracle of people filled with the Holy Spirit. Moreover, no one ever imagined the miracle of Jesus giving Himself to us by turning bread and wine into His Body and Blood. In addition to these miracles, we have witnessed in the new covenant even more healings, deliverances, signs, and wonders than in the old covenant. We live in the presence of daily, frequent, awesome miracles. Because of this, we have a great responsibility to repent.

Prayer: Father, as You extend “Your hand in cures and signs and wonders,” may we repent (see Acts 4:30).

Promise: “Unless your faith is firm you shall not be firm!” —Is 7:9

Praise: St. Kateri often placed small wooden crosses at places throughout the forests surrounding her village. She loved reminders of the crucified Christ.

ADDICTED TO SELF?
“He who seeks only himself brings himself to ruin, whereas he who brings himself to nought for Me discovers who he is.” —Matthew 10:39

To be disciples of Jesus, we must love Jesus more than we love our fathers, mothers, sons, or daughters (Mt 10:37). To some this seems difficult, but many other people feel so upset with their family members that it wouldn’t be hard to love them less.

However, to be disciples of Jesus, we must do something else which is almost unthinkable. We must deny our very selves (Lk 9:23), lose ourselves (Lk 9:24), and bring ourselves “to nought” for Jesus (Mt 10:39). We all are naturally addicted to self. It is impossible for us to stop our chronic narcissism. Yet nothing is impossible with God (Lk 1:37).

Only love can break the spell of self. The Lord proved His love for us by dying on the cross (Rm 5:8). The love of Christ crucified is the only key which can unlock our prisons of selfishness. Fix your eyes on Jesus (Heb 12:2) crucified (see 1 Cor 2:2). Totally give yourself to Him. Then say: “I have been crucified with Christ, and the life I live now is not my own; Christ is living  in me” (Gal 2:19-20).

Prayer: Father, may I love myself (Lk 10:27) and hate my addiction to self.

Promise: “Wash yourselves clean! Put away your misdeeds from before My eyes; cease doing evil; learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged.” —Is 1:16-17

Praise: St. Henry and his wife St. Cunegunda are both canonized saints, modeling the graces available in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony.

FROM CLOD TO GOD
“Thus You have prepared the land: drenching its furrows, breaking up its clods, softening it with showers.” —Psalm 65:11

God the Father sends every resource necessary to transform our hearts from hard ground to soft, fruitful ground, drenching them with physical and spiritual showers from heaven (see Is 55:10-11). Jesus is constantly sowing His Word, everywhere and to every person (Mt 13:4ff). The Holy Spirit transforms our hearts from stony hearts to natural, soft, fruitful hearts (Ez 36:26). For rocky ground, the Word of God is “like a hammer shattering rocks” (Jer 23:29), breaking up hard clods of clay into good ground. The Word of God is “living and effective,” penetrating and breaking up rock-hard hearts (Heb 4:12-13).

So why doesn’t everyone melt and bear abundant fruit if the Holy Trinity and the Word are so effective and powerful? Jesus answers by quoting the prophet Isaiah (see Mt 13:14-15; Is 6:9-10), saying that by faithfully sowing an understandable message, it would be as if you were causing obstinacy rather than repentance. Isaiah 6:9-10 is quoted five times in the New Testament (Mt 13:14-15; Mk 4:12; Lk 8:10; Jn 12:40; Acts 28:26-27).

Jesus reminds us to faithfully spread God’s Word, regardless of the results. We must go out and sow (Mt 13:4). If people don’t receive God’s Word, we are not to be surprised. The New Testament has prepared us five times for this rejection. Like Jesus, we must attempt to reach our hearers on their level, using parables (Mt 13:13), stories, discourses, explanations, etc. In so doing, some will repent, turn back to Jesus, and be healed (Mt 13:15).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, here I am. Use me to sow Your Word to a world that is famished for Your Good News.

Promise: “I consider the sufferings of the present to be as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed in us.” —Rm 8:18

Praise: Praise You, Jesus! With You and in You, we are raised up and given a place in the heavens (Eph 2:6). Alleluia!

AWESOME MINISTRY
“I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, with the train of His garment filling the temple.” —Isaiah 6:1

Before Isaiah was called to be a prophet, he had a life-changing experience of God’s holiness and glory. This awe of God’s presence, the fear of the Lord, is not only the beginning of wisdom (Ps 111:10), but also of ministry. Ezekiel also experienced the fear of the Lord profoundly before he became a prophet (Ez 1:1ff). Before Jesus’ public ministry, He heard the Father’s voice from the sky and experienced the Spirit descending on Him (Mt 3:16-17).

At the Church’s beginning, “a reverent fear overtook them all, for many wonders and signs were performed by the apostles” (Acts 2:43). St. Peter experienced the fear of the Lord early in his relationship with the Lord and “fell at the knees of Jesus saying, ‘Leave me, Lord. I am a sinful man’ ” (Lk 5:8). On the road to Damascus, St. Paul saw a sudden flash of light, fell to the ground, and was blind for three days (Acts 9:3ff). Thus began his Christian life and ministry.

We also need to deeply experience the fear of the Lord in some way to have a strong foundation for our ministry. We should praise and thank the Lord for His love and presence that we are already experiencing. We should ask for the Lord to manifest His presence to us in a new and much deeper way. May we make “steady progress in the fear of the Lord” (Acts 9:31).

Prayer: Father, may I experience Your presence so strongly it overshadows every aspect of my life.

Promise: “Every hair of your head has been counted; so do not be afraid of anything.” —Mt 10:30-31

Praise: St. Benedict and his monks set aside four to six hours daily for reading of the Word of God.

CROSS-BREED
“What I am doing is sending you out like sheep among wolves. You must be clever as snakes and innocent as doves.” —Matthew 10:16

What’s a cross between a sheep, a snake, and a dove? What goes “baa,” “hiss,” and “coo”? The answer is “a Christian.” We are like sheep among wolves, but clever as snakes, yet innocent as doves. We are sheep because we’re totally dependent on the Good Shepherd. We are snakes because we have wisdom from on high in the Holy Spirit (see 1 Cor 2:10). We are doves not because we’ve never sinned but because we’ve repented, been forgiven and had our innocence restored by being washed in Jesus’ blood (see 1 Jn 1:7).

Because we seem to be such strange creatures, we are a threat to the world. Therefore, it drags us into court and flogs us in the synagogues and churches (Mt 10:17). Even family members will reject the cross-breed Christian: “Brother will hand over brother to death, and the father his child; children will turn against parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by all on account of Me” (Mt 10:21-22). Nevertheless, be of good cheer; in Jesus you will find peace. Jesus has overcome the world (Jn 16:33). To be a cross-breed Christian is the greatest thing possible for a human being.

Prayer: “Save us, Savior of the world, for by Your Cross and Resurrection You have set us free.”

Promise: “Straight are the paths of the Lord, in them the just walk, but sinners stumble in them.” —Hos 14:10

Praise: Samantha, a lukewarm Catholic, experienced a profound and lasting conversion during a visit to Eucharistic adoration.

“Provide yourselves with neither gold nor silver nor copper in your belts; no traveling bag, no change of shirt, no sandals, no walking staff.” —Matthew 10:9-10

When we serve the Lord, we often feel inadequate. We think we’re making mistakes and feel the Lord is just shaking His head, saying: “No, not that. No, not now. No, not here. No! No! No!” As a matter of fact, the Lord is saying “No! No! No!” as we minister in His name, but He’s not saying: “No, you’re doing it wrong.” Rather, He’s saying: “No gold, no silver, no copper, ‘no traveling bag, no change of shirt, no sandals, no walking staff,’ no accommodations, and no security other than in Me.” The Lord wants to unburden us for ministry. He wants to simplify and streamline our lives. To minister in His name, we don’t need more but less — less possessions, less control, and less bright ideas.

The Lord is sending us out to minister, and He is saying: “No sin; repent! No divisions; forgive! No doubts; believe! No fears; trust! No self-deception; speak the truth! No compromise; love Me with all your hearts!” (see Mt 22:37)

The Lord is sending us out to minister, and He is saying: “Yes, I love you perfectly, infinitely, and eternally. Yes, ‘I am with you always’ (Mt 28:20). Yes, I will always forgive you. Yes, I will come back to take you with Me to be perfectly happy forever in heaven.” Because we believe the “Yes” of Jesus, we believe His “No.”

Prayer: Father, may You be my only security.

Promise: “I drew them with human cords, with bands of love; I fostered them like one who raises an infant to his cheeks.” —Hos 11:4

Praise: After his executioners cut off his right arm, 18-year-old Chi Zhuzi, a companion of St. Augustine Zhao Rong, declared to them: “Every piece of my flesh, every drop of my blood will tell you that I am Christian.”

LIFE UNDER THE ROCK
“Then they shall cry out to the mountains, ‘Cover us!’ and to the hills, ‘Fall upon us!’ ” —Hosea 10:8

As Jesus was being led to His crucifixion, He prophesied to the women of Jerusalem, “Do not weep for Me. Weep for yourselves and for your children…They will begin saying to the mountains, ‘Fall on us’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us’ ” (Lk 23:28, 30). Jesus says that the people of Jerusalem will quote Hosea 10:8, instantly recognizing their doomed fate and longing to be “protected” by the cover of the rocks. Sadly, they did not instantly recognize the mercy of God; they perceived it as His “wrath.” How ironic that Jesus had come precisely for these lost sheep.

Scripture prophesies that on the Day of the Lord, many will hide “themselves in caves and mountain crags. They [will cry] out to the mountains and rocks, ‘Fall on us! Hide us from the face of the One Who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! The great day of vengeance has come’ ” (Rv 6:15-17). Those who have disdained God suddenly have a dread realization that God is triumphant. Tragically, they trust the rocks and hills will be more merciful than God. “Men will go into caves in the rocks and into holes in the earth, from the terror of the Lord, and the splendor of His majesty, when He arises to overawe the earth” (Is 2:19).

We must realize the triumph of God today, in case we no longer have time to repent later (see Hos 10:12). Sadly, those who never bothered to know the merciful Lamb of God fear Him the wrong way. Rather than begging the Lamb to have mercy on them, they instead cry out to the rocks and hills to protect them from the Lamb’s “wrath” (see Rv 6:15-17). Today, put yourself under the cover of Jesus the Rock (1 Cor 10:4). Repent now before it’s too late.

Prayer: Jesus, Rock of Ages, may Your mercy “fall upon us” and “cover us,” now and forever.

Promise: “The reign of God is at hand!” —Mt 10:7

Praise: Belinda had a tubal ligation. Years later, she repented and expressed it by adopting a baby girl.
