THE SPIRIT OF SUFFERING

"This is My beloved Son on Whom My favor rests." —Matthew 17:5

Jesus was transfigured about eight days after He first predicted His
passion and death (Lk 9:28) and the day before His second prediction (Lk
9:37, 44ff). The transfigured and conquering Christ was supposed to open
us to the transfixed and crucified Christ. However, despite Jesus'
glorified body and dazzling clothes, the appearance of Moses and Elijah,
the overshadowing cloud, and the voice of the Father, the Transfiguration
did not work. Jesus' disciples weren't yet able to accept suffering and
death as part of the gospel (Lk 9:45).

Even Jesus' death and resurrection did not motivate His disciples to
listen to the message of the cross. Only by the Holy Spirit of Pentecost
can we be empowered to overcome our natural aversion to pain and
suffering. Openness and even happiness in the face of suffering is one of
the best ways to prove the presence of the Spirit in our lives. Only the
Spirit-filled leave the upper room of fear and expose themselves to
suffering and persecution. Therefore, "happy are you when you are insulted
for the sake of Christ, for then God's Spirit in Its glory has come to
rest on you" (1 Pt 4:14).

Prayer: Father, send the Spirit of Truth to reveal to me the privilege of
suffering for love of You (Phil 1:29).

Promise: "I saw One like a Son of Man coming, on the clouds of heaven;
when He reached the Ancient One and was presented before Him, He received
dominion, glory, and kingship; nations and peoples of every language serve
Him." —Dn 7:13-14

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, Light of the World (Jn 8:12). Alleluia!

APPROACHABLE

"When I summon him, he shall approach Me; how else should one take the
deadly risk of approaching Me? says the Lord." —Jeremiah 30:21

The Lord has frequently summoned us to approach Him. In fact, He
approached us in an unthinkable way through His incarnation. He even gives
Himself to us in Holy Communion. Because the Lord has given us the
opportunity to become so intimate with Him, we may forget what a privilege
it is to be in His presence and how awesome it is "to fall into the hands
of the living God" (Heb 10:31).

We may sometimes approach the Lord to receive Communion with sin and
unforgiveness in our hearts. Our Communion can then backfire on us so we
become sick or even die (1 Cor 11:30). Nevertheless, this danger should
not keep us from approaching the Lord in Holy Communion, but motivate us
to repent of our sins, and first approach Him in the Sacrament of
Reconciliation (Catechism, 1385, 1415).

The Lord loves us. He understands. He "was tempted in every way we are,
yet never sinned" (Heb 4:15). He died on the cross for us. Because of His
love, He is more approachable than anyone who has ever lived. He extends
His crucified arms to embrace us. He whispers: "Come to Me" (Mt 11:28).
But we must repent. Repent, approach, and receive His love.

Prayer: Jesus, eternal High Priest, You are "always able to save those who
approach God" through You (Heb 7:25). I adore

Promise: You. "See! I will restore the tents of Jacob, his dwellings I
will pity." —Jer 30:18

Praise: Blessed is Mary Most Holy, who lived always in the awesome
presence of God, and now praises Him forever in heaven. Alleluia! Praise
Jesus, Fruit of Mary's womb.

FALSE CONFIDENCE - One Bread, One Body, 8/4/2008

Check out our brochure entitled "How to Renew Your Parish"

http://www.presentationministries.com/brochures/HowToRenewParish.asp
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, August 4, 2008, St. John Mary Vianney

Jeremiah 28:1-17, Psalm 119:29, 43, 79-80, 95, 102, Matthew 14:22-36
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/readings/080408.shtml

FALSE CONFIDENCE

"You have raised false confidence in this people." —Jeremiah 28:15

History is filled with examples of false confidence resulting in disaster.
For example, George Washington led his troops in crossing the Delaware
River on Christmas to defeat the drunken Hessian troops during the
Revolutionary War. Once the battle had begun, the Hessian troops surely
wished they had spent their Christmas doing less drinking and celebrating
and more time being vigilant and prepared (see Lk 21:34).

"The time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but,
following their own desires, will surround themselves with teachers who
tickle their ears. They will stop listening to the truth and will wander
off to fables" (2 Tm 4:3-4). "Just when people are saying, 'Peace and
security,' ruin will fall on them with the suddenness of pains overtaking
a woman in labor, and there will be no escape" (1 Thes 5:3).

God has always sent prophets to afflict the comfortable by speaking
challenging words to those who place their confidence anywhere but in Him.
Is the Lord calling you to go and speak in this way? He wants you to have
much more confidence in Him than your hearers have in their false beliefs
(see 2 Cor 5:6). The Lord says: "Have no fear before them...But speak My
words to them, whether they heed or resist" (Jer 1:8; Ez 2:7).

Prayer: Lord, "let those turn to me who fear You and acknowledge Your
decrees" (Ps 119:79). Let me tell them Your truth.

Promise: "Jesus hastened to reassure them: 'Get hold of yourselves! It is
I. Do not be afraid!' " —Mt 14:27

Praise: St. John Vianney convicted those comfortable in their sins and
reconciled them to God.

PM enewsletter 18th Sunday in ordinary time

My brothers and sisters in Christ. I have a question for you.
Have you shared this eNewsletter with anyone lately?
Pray on it and pass the WORD.

God Bess you and all you care for.
The editor

August 3rd, 18th Sunday in ordinary time

This week the church celebrates the feast day of a man who
caused a lot of change just through adoration and prayer.

St. Father John Vianney was a man who knew the real
presense of God in the Eucharist.

When he came to his new parish, he realized that the only
way people could be brought to the church was through
prayer and adoration, so he spent countless hours on his
knees doing just that.

Oh! Christ, let us all see the value of just adoring You,
and praying for others.

For You, Christ, are the only answer to all the problems
of the day.

Thank You Jesus, for loving us and being with us in the
Eucharist.

And again we are blessed this week with the feast of
the transfiguration, which shows us Your true nature, a
nature of divine beauty and love. Amen and Amen

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday CARING ENOUGH TO CALL
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=8/3/2008

"All those present ate their fill." —Matthew 14:20

If we could only see people the way Jesus does! If only
our hearts were moved with pity because the masses are
like sheep without a shepherd, lying prostrate from
exhaustion! (Mt 9:36) When Jesus "saw the vast throng,
His heart was moved with pity, and He cured their sick"
(Mt 14:14). Then He multiplied five loaves and two fish to
feed fifteen to twenty thousand people (Mt 14:19-21).

Only Jesus has love and power enough to meet the needs
of our world's five billion people. He will do the impossible
to provide food, health, freedom, happiness, peace, justice,
reconciliation, affirmation, and eternal life for everyone.

Our job as Christians is to deliver Jesus' invitations. They
read: "All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who
have no money, come, receive grain and eat; come,
without paying and without cost" (Is 55:1). Let's love
people enough to go out into the highways and the byways
to invite them in (Lk 14:23).

Jesus is spreading His table for all to be satisfied. The
banquet costs us nothing because He has paid the price
by His life and death. Let all come to the wedding feast
of the Lamb (Rv 19:7).

PM Internet Prayer Requests
http://www.presentationministries.com/prayer/prayer.asp

On July 24, 2008, my husband filed for a divorce. For the
last almost two years, he has started staying out late,
drinking, and living in a manner which has caused scandal
to his family. We have 3 children and 5 grandchildren, and
have been married 26 years. Most people would say that
he's going through a "mid-life crisis". I think that it's very
much a spiritual crisis. Please pray for his conversion,
emotional healing and the healing of our marriage. I have
been a housewife and home-educator for 22 years and I love
my husband very much. I'm not sure how long this will take,
but the court date will be 60 days from the date stated
above. Thank you.
(R.J., Brookville, Indiana, United States, 8/2/2008 3:12:00 PM)

I pray my daughter remains safe and well on her trip
abroad. I pray all her travels are safe, and she will not get
sick from new food/water. I pray her skin remains clear
and she will not have any acne breakouts.

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

FREEDOM

"THE MYSTERY OF LOVE"
The Gospel teaches us that true freedom, the freedom of
the children of God, is found only in the self-surrender which
is part of the mystery of love.

"TRUE FREEDOM"
True freedom blossoms when we turn away from the burden
of sin, which clouds our perceptions and weakens our
resolve, and find the source of our ultimate happiness in
Him Who is infinite love, infinite freedom, infinite life. "In
His will is our peace."

"REAL FREEDOM"
Real freedom ... is God's gracious gift, the fruit of conversion
to His truth which makes us free.

DEATH-DEFYING

"Do with me what you think good and right. But mark well: if you put me to
death, it is innocent blood you bring on yourselves, on this city and its
citizens." —Jeremiah 26:14-15

The prophet Jeremiah prophesied his way out of martyrdom, at least for a
while (Jer 26:24). The prophet John the Baptizer did the same thing, but
was finally beheaded (Mt 14:5, 10). The Prophet Jesus used His prophetic
power to escape several attempts on His life (i.e. Lk 4:30; Jn 8:59), but
was eventually crucified.

We can be encouraged by this pattern because it shows that there's no
stopping someone moving in the power of the Spirit. We will repeatedly
escape from attempts to stop our work for the Lord. Even our deaths will
not stop us. For example, John the Baptizer's death paradoxically became
Herod's defeat and John's victory. Jesus' death became Satan's ultimate
defeat and the Lord's victory of love, salvation, and resurrection.

In Jesus, we are unstoppable and invincible. By the power of the Spirit,
we will repeatedly escape death. When we finally do die, we'll pull off
the greatest escape of all by rising with Jesus from the dead. Therefore,
"we are more than conquerors because of Him Who has loved us" (Rm 8:37).

Prayer: Father, by faith in Jesus, may I laugh in the face of death.

Promise: "For in truth it was the Lord Who sent me to you, to speak all
these things for you to hear." —Jer 26:15

Praise: St. Eusebius was unstoppable as he stood up for truth and fought
against heresy of his day.
