THE MIRACLE OF BECOMING A NEIGHBOR

"Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor?" —Luke 10:36

A lawyer asked Jesus: "Who is my neighbor?" (Lk 10:29) Jesus assumed that
everyone was our neighbor and answered another question: "How do I become
a neighbor?" A neighbor takes responsibility for others, even for
strangers. A neighbor is not apathetic. Being a neighbor is a grace, a
miracle. We can't do it by our own power.

There may not be as many neighbors around as we've thought. Even priests
and religious people may not be neighbors (see Lk 10:31-32). On the other
hand, unexpected people, like Samaritans or our enemies, may become
neighbors. A neighbor helps other human beings just because they are human
beings. We revere other people as persons not because of what they've done
or how good they are but simply because they are persons (1 Pt 2:17).

A neighbor not only refers others to where they can receive more help, but
also personally serves those in need. The Samaritan hoisted the beaten man
"on his own beast and brought him to an inn, where he cared for him" (Lk
10:34). Therefore, being a neighbor is often dirty and expensive (Lk
10:34-35). "If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one
member is honored, all the members share its joy" (1 Cor 12:26). This
identification and solidarity expresses itself in compassion (Lk 10:37),
that is, in "suffering with" the other person.

Prayer: Father, do the miracle of making me a neighbor.

Promise: "If I were trying to win man's approval, I would surely not be
serving Christ!" —Gal 1:10

Praise: St. Bruno expressed his love for his neighbor through his vow of
poverty and austerity.

Jesus, I thank You for the gift of Mary our mother, and
thank You for allowing her to be a mediator for us to You.

This week, oh! Jesus, we have the feast of "Our Lady of
the Rosary", a feast that reminds us to use this wonderful
way of interceding for the needs of all people.

We have a beautiful meditation on Your life, and how that
should affect our love for You.

Jesus, You never leave us with out the means to come to
You in all the problems of life.

Thank You for loving us. Amen and Amen

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

Sunday ANXIETY ATTACK

"Dismiss all anxiety from your minds." —Philippians 4:6

Our society mass-produces anxiety, tension, stress,
and depression. God has given us the authority to
dismiss all these things from our minds by an act of
our will. However, there's more to it. We must present
our "needs to God in every form of prayer and in
petitions full of gratitude" (Phil 4:6). In this way, we
don't just "think positively," but actually change the
circumstances which contribute to our anxieties.

Furthermore, to be permanently free from anxiety, we
must accept God's order, His shalom-peace, into our
lives (Phil 4:7). This will guard our hearts and minds
by giving us a point of reference by which to decide if
something belongs in our lives.

Finally, permanent freedom from anxiety not only
depends on guarding against bad influences. We must
also wholly direct our thoughts "to all that is true, all
that deserves respect, all that is honest, pure,
admirable, decent, virtuous, or worthy of praise" (Phil 4:8).

In Jesus, we have authority over anxiety. We exercise
this authority through prayer, peace, and focusing on
what is true, pure, and godly. In Jesus, we can be the
most carefree, peaceful, and happy people in the world.

Catholics and the Orthodox maintain Mary is the
most important human being in God's plan, except

MISSION AND EVANGELIZATION

MY WORD!

"It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your
statutes." —Psalm 119:71

Psalm 119 expresses the normal, though not typical, attitude of a
Christian toward the word of God. This attitude is so zealous (Ps 119:139)
that it takes 176 verses to extol every aspect of God's word. How does a
Christian come to love God's word so deeply, according to the Psalm 119
standard?

Many with this zealous devotion to the Scriptures did not start this way.
We can testify: "Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I hold to
Your promise" (Ps 119:67). God has brought us low to make us open to His
word. Although we are "very much afflicted" (Ps 119:107), unjustly
oppressed (Ps 119:78), and in "distress and anguish" (Ps 119:143), these
sufferings pale in comparison to the delight we now take in God's word (Ps
119:35). In fact, despite our present sufferings, what really bothers us
is that others disdain God's word. We lament: "My eyes shed streams of
tears because Your law has not been kept" (Ps 119:136).

Psalm 119 was written at a time when the Scriptures did not include the
New Testament and before several of the Old Testament books had been
compiled. Even without knowing the joy and consolation that Jesus gives,
would this half-Bible be enough to fill your heart with exuberant praises?
Would God's word itself be your delight? If not, humble yourself before
the Lord. God declares: "This is the one whom I approve: the lowly and
afflicted man who trembles at My word" (Is 66:2). How much more should our
hearts burn within us today as we read God's word in its full New
Testament, gospel splendor! (Lk 24:32)

Prayer: Father, "in Your statutes I will delight; I will not forget Your
words" (Ps 119:16).

Promise: "Your names are inscribed in heaven." —Lk 10:20

Praise: St. Francis so loved the word of God he voluntarily accepted
gospel poverty, doing penance for those who would or could not.

EYE-OPENING REPENTANCE

"If the miracles worked in your midst had occurred in Tyre and Sidon, they
would long ago have reformed in sackcloth and ashes." —Luke 10:13

"If the miracles worked in [Capernaum] had taken place in Sodom, it would
be standing today" (Mt 11:23). Sodom, Tyre, and Sidon were among the most
wicked places of the Old Testament (see Ez 26-28; Gn 18-19). Yet Jesus
declares that the people of these condemned cities would have reformed.
The problem was that they had no one to bring to them a ministry of power
evangelization, that is, preaching accompanied by miracles. The people of
Nineveh were infamous for their wickedness, but "at the preaching of Jonah
they reformed" (Lk 11:32). Yet we have something greater than Jonah to
offer them (Lk 11:32).

Where is your personal Tyre and Sidon? Is it your family, coworkers,
neighbors? What environment do you think has no hope for conversion? Is it
the inner city, the public schools, the government, or corporate America?
How do we know they will automatically reject the gospel? If the gospel is
presented to them, there is always a chance for conversion. If they never
hear a clear, powerful presentation of the good news, then "how shall they
call on Him in Whom they have not believed? And how can they believe
unless they have heard of Him? And how can they hear unless there is
someone to preach?" (Rm 10:14) How can they believe if we don't believe
enough to tell them about Jesus?

No one ever caught any fish by staying at home. Let's spread the good news
and try to catch some big fish for Jesus (Mk 1:17).

Prayer: Father, may I never underestimate Your power.

Promise: "He who hears you, hears Me." —Lk 10:16

Praise: Thomas chose to live in the inner city specifically to be a
Christian presence where the need seems greatest.

FULL CUSTODY

"For to His angels He has given command about you, that they guard you in
all your ways." —Psalm 91:11

Our lives are so precious to God that He has created and assigned an angel
specifically for each one of us. "Beside each believer stands an angel as
protector and shepherd leading him to life" (Catechism, 336). The Lord
says: "My angel is with you, and he is the custodian of your lives" (Bar
6:6). For anyone who thinks they're in charge of their own life, it's
important to know that a guardian angel has been authorized by God to take
full custody of that life.

Your guardian angel is:
* focused constantly on Jesus (Mt 18:10; Jn 1:51). "Christ is the
center of the angelic world" (Catechism, 331). Your angel's life revolves
around Jesus (Jn 1:51).
* devoted to your personal welfare and care (Ps 91:11; Bar 6:6). God
specifically declares: "I am sending an angel before you" (Ex 23:20).

Your angel is constantly beholding the face of Christ. This gives your
angel a privileged position to instantly hear, receive, and carry out
orders specifically related to you. Your angel is attentive to you at all
times. Therefore, obey God's command to "be attentive to" your angel and
"heed his voice" (Ex 23:21, 22).

Prayer: Father, thank You for loving me so personally as to create and
assign an angel specifically for me. I will repent so as to cause You and
my angel to rejoice (Lk 15:10).

Promise: "Unless you change and become like little children, you will not
enter the kingdom of God." —Mt 18:3

Praise: "Angel of God, my guardian dear..."
