THE PEACE OF CHRISTMAS

"I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place without further
disturbance." —2 Samuel 7:10

The Lord promised David rest from his enemies (2 Sm 7:11). This promise of
peace was surprising since violence was David's "claim to fame" (see 1 Sm
18:7). From cutting off Goliath's head to setting up Uriah's murder, David
lived an extremely violent life. People must have laughed when they heard
David was promised peace. Nevertheless, the promise at first seemed
fulfilled because David's son Solomon (Solomon means "peace") had a
peaceful reign. But David's grandson Rehoboam started a civil war. One war
led to more wars. Israel had no peace. It seemed as if God's promise of
peace to David's house was not kept.

After almost a thousand years, the archangel Gabriel announced to Mary:
"You shall conceive and bear a Son and give Him the name Jesus. Great will
be His dignity and He will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God
will give Him the throne of David His father" (Lk 1:31-32). When this
Child was born on the first Christmas, the angels sang: "Glory to God in
high heaven, peace on earth" (Lk 2:14). It seemed as if God's ancient
promise of peace was finally fulfilled, for Jesus talked about loving
enemies, turning the other cheek, making peace (Mt 5:44, 39, 9) and giving
peace (Jn 14:27). However, we eventually killed Jesus, our Peace (Eph
2:14), and continue warring to the present day.

God's promise of peace to David's house has been fulfilled in Jesus. All
who live totally for Jesus have peace beyond understanding (Phil 4:7).
This peace is not something imposed on us, but Someone proposing to us.
Accept Jesus our Peace.

Prayer: Father, may we beat our missiles into plowshares and our bombs
into pruning hooks (Is 2:4).

Promise: "Let it be done to me as you say." —Lk 1:38

Praise: "O Radiant Dawn, Splendor of eternal light, Sun of justice: come,
shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death."

THE INCARNATION

"The angel answered her: 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power
of the Most High will overshadow you; hence, the holy Offspring to be born
will be called Son of God." —Luke 1:35

If Jesus hadn't become a human being, there would be no saving death and
resurrection, no Church or Mass, no body of Christ — there would be no
Christmas. Therefore, the Incarnation was one of the greatest events in
the history of the human race, and the basis for all the other great
events.

Accordingly, we recall the Incarnation morning, noon, and evening in the
prayer called the "Angelus." We recall the Incarnation at least
fifty-three times in one five-decade rosary as we pray each "Hail Mary."
We meditate on the Incarnation as the first joyful mystery. We celebrate
the feast of the Incarnation March 25 under the name of the Annunciation.
We read about it in Luke 1:35 and John 1:14, and read it between all the
rest of the lines of the Bible. We proclaim the Incarnation each Christmas
by celebrating the birth of Jesus nine months after He became a human
being.

Are you so accustomed to all these references to the Incarnation that you
ignore them? Or are you ever more deeply entering into the mystery of the
Incarnate God? Be amazed that God became a human being — conceived,
birthed, nursed, tired, tempted, sad, crucified, and dead. Treasure all
these things and reflect on them in your heart (see Lk 2:19).

Prayer: Father, may I relate to the Incarnate Jesus as did the wise men
(see Mt 2:11).

Promise: "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you this sign: the virgin
shall be with Child, and bear a Son, and shall name Him Immanuel." —Is
7:14

Praise: "O Key of David, O Royal Power of Israel controlling at Your will
the gate of heaven: come, break down the prison walls of death for those
who dwell in darkness and shadow of death; and lead Your captive people
into freedom."

FORGOTTEN PRAYER?

"Do not be frightened, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard." —Luke 1:13

Luke's text gives us several clues to Zechariah's background. Zechariah
and Elizabeth were advancing in age. Elizabeth was past the age of bearing
children (Lk 1:18, 36). Apparently, some years before, Zechariah had
prayed for children; hence, the angel says: "Your prayer has been heard"
(Lk 1:13). Zechariah's startled and skeptical reaction indicates that he
probably had forgotten about this prayer and perhaps hadn't prayed for a
child in quite a few years.

Sometimes we Christians assume that prayer has a kind of spiritual
"statute of limitations," that if God hasn't answered our prayers in what
seems to us a "reasonable" amount of time, then He has forgotten our
prayer and therefore the prayer no longer is valid. However, the angel
tells Zechariah, "Your prayer has been heard" (Lk 1:13). God did not
forget his prayer. As the angel says: "They will all come true in due
season" (Lk 1:20).

Have you prayed for something for a time, then stopped praying because it
seemed to you that God wasn't listening? Take the angel's advice:
"Silence...in the presence of the Lord!" (Zec 2:17) Be still and know that
He is God (see Ps 46:10, JB).

Prayer: (Pray to the Father a seemingly unanswered prayer which you
haven't prayed for years.)

Promise: "In these days the Lord is acting on my behalf." —Lk 1:25

Praise: "O Flower of Jesse's stem, You have been raised up as a Sign for
all peoples; kings stand silent in Your presence; the nations bow down in
worship before You. Come, let nothing keep You from coming to our aid."

Making the choice for 'Peace'

I speak at conferences in cities all over the world and sometimes I ask our
crew to place a rocking chair in a conspicuous place on the stage.
Occasionally, while I am speaking, I'll walk over and sit in the chair and
begin to rock.

I don't do this because I'm tired or because I want to give the impression
that I'm relaxed. I do this to illustrate a point. When you rock in a
rocking chair, you generate a lot of activity and movement-back and forth,
back and forth. But no matter how active you may appear to be, you never
actually go anywhere. You can be really active, vigorously moving back and
forth, but you'll never accomplish anything. You'll always stay right where
you started.

Like the rocking chair, we all get involved in things every day that appear
to be necessary. We're moving around a lot and generating a lot of activity,
but we're not accomplishing a thing.

For example, we can get upset and worry and stew about situations we couldn't
change if we tried. We can fret and be anxious about things and call our
friends and talk about those things. We can read articles that deal with
those things or watch television shows that deal with those subjects. But
none of those things will change our circumstances at all.

I want to share a Bible verse with you. John 14:27 says, Peace I leave with
you; My [own] peace I now give and bequeath to you. Not as the world gives
do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be
afraid. [Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed; and do not
permit yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled]
(AMP).

Now let me explain the context of this verse to you because it's very
important. This verse includes some of the very last words Jesus spoke to
His disciples before He ascended into heaven. Now think about that for a
minute. Imagine that you are getting ready to go on a long trip and just
before you walk out the door, you turn to your family. What do you say? You
say the most important things-those things you don't want them to forget.

That's the way it was with Jesus. He knew He was getting ready to leave them
and wanted to pass along some of the most important things He could think
of. He told them to stop allowing themselves to be agitated and disturbed,
and not to permit themselves to be fearful and intimidated, cowardly or
unsettled.

Did you realize that these things are about choices that you make? You don't
have to live a life filled with agitation and fear. You don't have to be
intimidated and unsettled. Having peace is a choice. You can actually choose
to walk in the peace that Jesus was referring to in that verse above.

Now, there is a "worldly" kind of peace that people have when everything is
going their way and they're getting everything they want. But anyone can
have peace when everything is going their way. That's not difficult at all;
in fact, it's natural.

But the way that we show the real power of God in our lives is when we have
many of the same kinds of unpleasant circumstances that other people have
and yet, while they are upset and unsettled, wasting their time worrying and
fretting, we're peaceful and calm, enjoying life right in the midst of the
trials and tribulations.

You can wish you didn't get upset and fretful. You can wish you didn't
become anxious and agitated. But just like the rocking chair doesn't
actually take you anywhere, just wishing for something never accomplishes
anything.

What about you? Are you choosing peace today? Remember the rocking chair.
Don't fall into the trap of busying yourself with fretting and worrying
about circumstances that you cannot change.

No matter what your circumstances may be, having peace and contentment is a
choice you make. You no longer have to live under your circumstances. Get up
out of the rocking chair and make the bold choice to walk in the peace of
Christ!

THE SUPERMAN OF FAITH

"Joseph, son of David, have no fear about taking Mary as your wife. It is
by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived this Child." —Matthew 1:20

In one week, we will celebrate the first day of the Christmas season. Have
you prepared the way of the Lord? (Lk 3:4) Do you have faith strong enough
to move mountains (Mt 17:20) so as to fill in the valleys, make the
crooked straight, and the rough smooth? (Lk 3:5) All, including Christmas,
"depends on faith" (Rm 4:16). But when Christ comes this Christmas and at
the end of the world, "will He find any faith on the earth?" (Lk 18:8)

To grow strong in faith, we must recognize the cloud of witnesses
surrounding us (Heb 12:1). They in turn will help us recognize Christ and
fix our eyes on Him Who is the Beginning and the End of our faith (Heb
12:2). Realize that right now you are surrounded by Mary, John the
Baptizer, and countless other saints in heaven and on earth. Recognize
especially Joseph's presence. He made one of the greatest acts of faith in
history. He believed the unimaginable — that Mary had conceived by the
power of the Holy Spirit (Mt 1:20).

Joseph was the superman of faith. Recognize Joseph, who will direct you to
Jesus, Who will gift you with deep faith. St. Joseph, pray for us.

Prayer: Father, work through Your witnesses to help me receive
mountain-moving faith and more.

Promise: "Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up
a righteous Shoot to David." —Jer 23:5

Praise: "O sacred Lord of ancient Israel, Who showed Yourself to Moses in
the burning bush, Who gave him the holy law on Sinai mountain: come,
stretch out Your mighty hand to set us free."

FAMILY MATTERS

"A family record of Jesus Christ..." —Matthew 1:1

Wait! Don't skip the genealogy! Because we love the Lord, we can't wait to
learn more about Him. Here's a few things God reveals about Himself in St.
Matthew's genealogy:
* Jesus Christ is a human being, God made man.
* Jesus is God, the Messiah, born of a virgin (Mt 1:16, 18).
* Family comes first — these are the first verses of the New Testament,
and God can't wait to introduce His family.
* God works through people — lots of them.
* God loves families. Jesus lived in one for thirty years.
* Some family members are extraordinary (e.g. Mary, Joseph, David);
others are faithful (e.g. Ruth, Josiah); some are nondescript (e.g. Eliud,
Azor); others are despicable (e.g. Manasseh, Rehoboam). Jesus considers
them all His family. God's plan was accomplished through each one.
* Some, like Ruth and Rahab, were outsiders but were welcomed into
God's family for their loving faithfulness.
* God is pro-life. He loves fathers, mothers, and children.
* God has a place in His plan for every baby, including those born of
prostitution (Perez — Mt 1:3; Gn 38:1-30), injustice (Solomon — Mt 1:6; 2
Sm 11:1-27), and mixed marriages (Obed — Mt 1:5; Ru 4:5ff).
* God is patient. His plan may take a long time to unfold.
* "God is not ashamed to be called their God" (Heb 11:16) and Jesus is
not ashamed of His family. He loves them.

"Beloved, we are God's children now" (1 Jn 3:2). Let us love our brothers
and sisters in Christ.

Prayer: Father, thank You for adopting me into Your family! May I please
You and bring honor to Your family name.

Promise: "The scepter shall never depart from Judah." —Gn 49:10

Praise: "O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, You govern all creation with Your
strong yet tender care. Come and show Your people the way to salvation."
