The time has come for a big gift

A few weeks before Christmas last year, the documentary film "What Would
Jesus Buy?" made its debut in American theaters. The film created quite a
stir among American retailers in gift stores and toy stores across the
nation.

This documentary's producer, Morgan Spurlock, said that his intention behind
producing the film was to shed light on the trend of over-consumption among
Americans during the holidays in the past 50 years. Spurlock focuses on the
period beginning at Thanksgiving and ending after the New Year. He argues
that shopping sprees have misled children into thinking that the purpose of
Christmas is receiving gifts and a parent's love for a child is measured by
the number of gifts the child receives. Most Americans have equated
Christmas with shopping and many go on shopping sprees during Christmas only
to realise afterward that they have accumulated junk they would never use at
home.

It seems only Christian organisations remember that Jesus is the reason for
the season nowadays. For most people, Christmas is just another opportunity
to buy more stuff. Many people get side-tracked in comparing whose Christmas
tree is bigger or prettier. Retail stores compete against each other in
luring customers and making big money from giant sales. These activities
only take the focus away from the real meaning of Christmas, which is the
birth of Jesus Christ for the salvation of mankind.

The birth of Jesus was not an accident. It was a gift from God to humanity -
exquisitely timed and planned. God sent Jesus for our eternal salvation, as
foretold by the prophet Isaiah about 700 years before the birth of Christ:
"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with
child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Emmanuel." (Isaiah
7:14). Isaiah also proclaimed, "For to us a child is born, to us a son is
given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called
Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
(Isaiah 9:6). Jesus' birth and how He grew into adulthood are described in
the first two chapters of the Gospel of Luke.

The fact that Jesus was an exquisitely timed gift from God can be seen from
the verses above and from Paul's letter to the church in Galatia. Paul
clearly told the Galatians, "But when the time had fully come, God sent his
Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we
might receive the full rights of sons. Because you are sons, God sent the
Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father."
So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has
made you also an heir." (Galatians 4:4~7). From this passage, one can see
that Christmas is a time to celebrate Jesus' coming as God in the flesh.
Through the birth of Jesus, God was reconciling the world to Him and also
providing for our salvation through the sacrifice of His Son.

Jesus' birth in a lowly manger set the tone for the rest of His life on
earth as a humble, kind, and sacrificial role model. More importantly, His
birth brought new hope to humanity, peace for society, comfort for the poor
and oppressed, and reconciliation between people because of the salvation He
would later accomplish. Hence, the birth of Jesus is God's gift to humanity
at just the right moment. His birth is an irreplaceable, eternal gift. As
you send or receive cards and greet others during this Christmas season,
don't
forget the real meaning of Christmas.

CALVARY-CHRISTMAS

"You will be hated by all on account of Me. But whoever holds out till the
end will escape death." —Matthew 10:22

On this second day of Christmas, the Church presents to us St. Stephen,
the first martyr. The festive red color of Christmas is mixed with the
blood-red of the martyr. The Church proclaims that Christmas is not just a
custom, diversion, or triviality. Christmas is glorious — and serious.
Christmas is the proclamation of Jesus' lordship. It is the Word
confronting the world (see Wis 18:15).

The Church's Christmas characters are not Santa, Rudolph, or Frosty. Our
Christmas saints are the fearless martyr Stephen, the massacred babies of
Bethlehem, the bloodied Thomas Becket, joyful and sorrowful mother Mary,
and Joseph the impoverished refugee. The Church proclaims that Christmas
is not primarily for the consumers and shoppers but for the witnesses, the
persecuted, and the poor.

You may have had the world's Christmas for years. Why don't you try
something different and celebrate the Word's Christmas? Repent, obey,
witness, and begin Christ's Christmas.

Prayer: Father, give me a good, old-fashioned, Bethlehem-Calvary
Christmas.

Promise: "As Stephen was being stoned he could be heard praying, 'Lord
Jesus, receive my spirit.' " —Acts 7:59

Praise: St. Stephen was so focused on his beloved Jesus that he saw the
heavens open as he was killed (Acts 7:56).

CONSTRICTED BY LOVE

"The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us." —John 1:14

On this great celebration of Christmas, we recall Jesus being constricted
for love of us:
* Jesus, Son of God and Eternal Word of God, Whom the universe cannot
contain (2 Chr 6:18), is constricted in the womb of the Blessed Virgin
Mary.
* Jesus, through Whom all things came into being (Jn 1:3), accepts the
constraints and limitations of a human body.
* After birth, Jesus was "wrapped in swaddling clothes" (Lk 2:12).
These clothes encircled His body, constricting Him.
* The Baby Jesus was hunted down by the government. His family fled to
Egypt. He was constricted through life as a Refugee in a land far from His
home (Mt 2:14ff).
* Jesus was constricted on the cross, the almighty God pressed to its
wood by a few nails.
* Jesus was constricted again by swaddling clothes. His burial cloths
were wrapped around His immobile body.
* After dying, the body of Jesus was constricted in a tomb.

Why did Jesus submit to these constrictions for our sake? "God is love" (1
Jn 4:16), and love endures all things (1 Cor 13:7).

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, for taking on the constrictions of our humanity
so You could set us free in the power of Your resurrection! I join my
human life to Yours. I put my life in Your hands.

Promise: "Any who did accept [Jesus] He empowered to become children of
God." —Jn 1:12

Praise: "For a Child is born to us, a Son is given us; upon His shoulder
dominion rests" (Is 9:5). "With the Lord is kindness and with Him is
plenteous redemption" (Ps 130:7).

THE TIME OF FULFILLMENT

"Zechariah his father, filled with the Holy Spirit, uttered this
prophecy..." —Luke 1:67

On this Christmas Eve, we stand at the threshold of the fulfillment of
amazing prophecies. We may have been waiting for months or years for this,
and this Christmas season will be the awaited time. Most of these
prophetic promises of God may seem no closer to being fulfilled now than
they have been for years. Some of these revelations you can hardly
remember. It's been so long since you first heard them. Nonetheless, now
you are on the threshold, although you know this only by faith, not by
sight (2 Cor 5:7).

Today, in these last few hours before the Christmas season begins, pray,
fast, repent, read the Bible, and be quiet. Choose the better part (Lk
10:42). Don't be so busy about the details of hospitality (Lk 10:40). Sit
at Jesus' feet and listen to His words (Lk 10:39). Prepare the way of the
Lord (Is 40:3). He "will surely come." His prophetic revelation "will not
be late" (see Hab 2:3).

"We possess the prophetic message as something altogether reliable. Keep
your attention closely fixed on it, as you would on a lamp shining in a
dark place until the first streaks of dawn appear and the morning star
rises in your hearts" (2 Pt 1:19).

Prayer: Father, rekindle my faith that You will keep the promises which
have been unfulfilled for years.

Promise: "Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever." —2 Sm 7:16

Praise: After seeking forty years for God, John found his lost faith
during Advent, died shortly thereafter, and was home in heaven by
Christmas.

CHRISTMAS PRESENCE

"All who heard stored these things up in their hearts, saying, 'What will
this child be?' " —Luke 1:66

I hope you're more excited than you've ever been for Christmas — more
excited than when you were a little child waiting to open your Christmas
presents. The excitement I'm talking about is not primarily an emotion but
an expression of faith. It's not based on Christmas presents but on
Christmas presence. The Lord is present. We can see Him setting the
captives free, healing the sick, and working miracles. We sense His
presence within us, as He purifies our hearts and turns them to Himself.
We see the Lord present in the Church, His word, and the sacraments.

Although our sins blind us to His presence, we experience His presence
sometimes and know by faith that He is with us always even "until the end
of the world" (Mt 28:20). Today, although we may feel as if we have a
hundred things to do, we should stop everything for a while. We must be
Mary rather than Martha (see Lk 10:38ff). If we let Him quiet our hearts,
we will understand the words of the hymn "Silent Night." When all is calm,
all will be bright with a deep awareness of God's presence. As we sit
quietly at Jesus' feet (Lk 10:39), the business and busy-ness of Christmas
which have left us jaded will give way to an awareness and awe of Christ's
presence. We will be as a little child (see Mt 18:3). We will enter the
kingdom of God and be excited about Christmas.

Prayer: Father, give me an awe of You which is the beginning of Christmas
(see Ps 111:10).

Promise: "He will purify the sons of Levi, refining them like gold or like
silver." —Mal 3:3

Praise: "O Emmanuel, King and Lawgiver, Desire of the nations, Savior of
all people, come and set us free, Lord our God."

MOTHER OF THE WORD INCARNATE

"...even as He promised our fathers, promised Abraham and his descendants
forever." —Luke 1:55

Mary's response to Elizabeth in the words of the Magnificat (Lk 1:46-55)
shows her to be a woman completely grounded in God's word. Mary's lifelong
relationship with the word of God reached its fulfillment when she became
pregnant with Jesus, "the Word" (Jn 1:1). The mother of the Word Incarnate
was so filled with the Word that Scripture flowed from her lips
effortlessly.

Nearly every line of her Magnificat echoes an Old Testament passage. Mary
was undoubtedly familiar with Hannah's canticle in today's responsorial
Psalm (1 Sm 2:1-10), but echoes of the Psalms and other Old Testament
verses also resound throughout her Magnificat. The New American Bible
footnotes list twelve Old Testament Scriptures as cross-references for the
Magnificat, while the Jerusalem Bible references twenty-three such
passages.

"Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ" (Catechism, 133). God
sent His only Son into the world on the first Christmas so that we might
believe in Him and receive eternal life (Jn 3:16). If you conclude
Christmas 2008 without coming to know Jesus as Lord, Savior, and God, then
you've missed the whole purpose of Christmas. Therefore, follow Mary's
lead. Immerse yourself in the Scriptures. Prepare to meet Jesus, the Word
of God, this Christmas.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, Author of the Scriptures, grant me from this moment
forth an unquenchable desire to read the Bible.

Promise: "The Lord granted my request." —1 Sm 1:27

Praise: "O King of all the nations, the only Joy of every human heart; O
Keystone of the mighty arch of man, come and save the creature You
fashioned from the dust."

Dec. 21st, Fourth Sunday of Advent

Oh! Jesus, this is it, the birth of You, and the start of our
journey to eternal life.

Let us see in Your birth, the gift that is so hard to
comprehend.

The gift of the love of the Triune God for us mortal sinners.

The gift that started with the making of the new arc of
the eternal covenent, and ends in Your glorious ascension
into heaven, to sit and plead for us at the right hand of the Father.

Come let us adore You, come let us become new
creatures of love, come let us be on fire with Your loving presence.

Come Lord Jesus and fill our hearts with peace, joy and trust.

Come Maranatha come. amen and amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

Sunday THE PEACE OF CHRISTMAS

"I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place
without further disturbance." —2 Samuel 7:10

The Lord promised David rest from his enemies (2 Sm 7:11).
This promise of peace was surprising since violence was
David's "claim to fame" (see 1 Sm 18:7). From cutting off
Goliath's head to setting up Uriah's murder, David lived an
extremely violent life. People must have laughed when
they heard David was promised peace. Nevertheless, the
promise at first seemed fulfilled because David's son
Solomon (Solomon means "peace") had a peaceful reign.
But David's grandson Rehoboam started a civil war. One
war led to more wars. Israel had no peace. It seemed as
if God's promise of peace to David's house was not kept.

After almost a thousand years, the archangel Gabriel
announced to Mary: "You shall conceive and bear a Son
and give Him the name Jesus. Great will be His dignity
and He will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord
God will give Him the throne of David His father"
(Lk 1:31-32). When this Child was born on the first
Christmas, the angels sang: "Glory to God in high
heaven, peace on earth" (Lk 2:14). It seemed as if
God's ancient promise of peace was finally fulfilled,
for Jesus talked about loving enemies, turning the other
cheek, making peace (Mt 5:44, 39, 9) and giving peace
(Jn 14:27). However, we eventually killed Jesus, our
Peace (Eph 2:14), and continue warring to the present day.

God's promise of peace to David's house has been
fulfilled in Jesus. All who live totally for Jesus have
peace beyond understanding (Phil 4:7). This peace
is not something imposed on us, but Someone
proposing to us. Accept Jesus our Peace.

do not close. For an increase in vocations to the
