January 4th The "Epiphany"

Jesus, thank you for Your tremendous gift of eternal life that
started with Your being with us.

Lord, You came to this earth to do the Fathers will in
everything.

Jesus, please help us always to do Your will as we struggle
to really be Christ to others, and live as light in this
darkened world.

Lord, help us to look with Your eyes, and see the real
needs of those not only around us, but truly the needs
of all peoples.

Let us pray and be willing, to be just stewards of all the
gifts, that You have given us.

We pray, help us to share with others, in love and in
gratitude to You.

Thank You, Jesus, for Your love. Amen and Amen

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

For most of the world, today's feast of Epiphany is the
most important day of the Christmas season. It's the day
when many people exchange gifts and imitate the wise
men who gave gifts to Jesus. Today the Lord is calling
us to give Jesus the present of ourselves, to prostrate
ourselves before Him and do Him homage (Mt 2:11).

Like the wise men, we should express our giving of
everything to Jesus by giving Him something — a gift
that would represent our all. Some of us should give
Jesus gold. We should give money to God's work to
the degree that our lifestyle is significantly affected.
Others should give frankincense. In the Bible, our prayer
is represented by incense (Ps 141:2). We should
commit ourselves to a time of prayer and fasting that
will in effect be giving our lives to the Lord.

Finally, we should give the Lord myrrh. Myrrh is
associated with death since it is a perfume used to
prepare a dead body for burial. We should give a gift
that would force us to die to ourselves. On this great
feast of Epiphany, let's be wise enough to give Jesus our all.

My wife and I ask in faith and act in prayer that Jesus will remove
this unholy gay man which happens to be our boss. Being of a
different race we are treated unfairly and are denied hours at work
which takes food off the table. Our 18 mo son always comes first
and is always fed, it's driving an hour to work, being belittled, treated
unfairly, and robbed of work hours that makes it hard getting thru the
day with a smile. I guess I should really ask for the endurance to
make it thru each day and be thankful for the Graces already
bestowed upon us.

My husband has decided that he has no further use for church and
religion. I am a devout Catholic and I cherish my Faith deeply. He
has started to make fun of my commitmemt to my church and my
regular attendance at Mass and Curch activities. I pray that the
Holy Spirit will speak to his heart and that he will be open to the
teaching and guidance. And I pray, also that the working of the
Holy Spirit will lead him to change his non-caring and nonchalant
attitude toward God and also to his home.

RECOGNITION

"The reason the world does not recognize us is that it never recognized
the Son." —1 John 3:1

The world has never recognized Jesus (1 Jn 3:1). Even John the Baptizer
had to confess not recognizing Him (Jn 1:31), although Jesus was the very
reason John came baptizing with water (1 Jn 1:31, 33). Jesus came to His
own, "yet His own did not accept Him" (Jn 1:11). He was laid in a manger
because there was no room for Him "in the place where travelers lodged"
(Lk 2:7).

Jesus was rarely recognized from His birth to His death and resurrection.
Even Mary Magdalene and the two disciples on the road to Emmaus did not
recognize the risen Christ because He was "completely changed in
appearance" (Mk 16:12).

Will we recognize Christ this Christmas season? Will we be among those few
wise men and women who came to adore Him? If we are under Jesus' lordship
and have died to self, we will recognize Christ this Christmas. If we have
been crucified to the world (Gal 6:14), we will have Christmas. Otherwise,
we will not recognize Him, for the world has never recognized Jesus (1 Jn
3:1).

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for choosing me out of the world (Jn 15:19). May
I accept Your choice.

Promise: "When you see the Spirit descend and rest on Someone, it is He
Who is to baptize with the Holy Spirit." —Jn 1:33

Praise: Six-year-old Marie is gifted by God to recognize Jesus truly
present in the Eucharist.

ANOINTING, REMAINING, AND GROWING

"Remain in Him as that anointing taught you." —1 John 2:27

On the inside front cover of this booklet is the Rescript, the Catholic
Church's Permission to Publish. Before One Bread, One Body is printed, the
Church reviews this booklet to ensure it is free of doctrinal or moral
error. When the booklet is error-free, "free from any lie" (1 Jn 2:27),
the Church grants Permission to Publish. (Until recently, Permission to
Publish was called the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur.) At Presentation
Ministries, remaining safely under Church authority is how we remain in
Jesus as the anointing of the Holy Spirit taught us (1 Jn 2:27).

St. John says that if the anointing you received from Jesus remains in
you, then "you have no need for anyone to teach you" (1 Jn 2:27). Then why
read this booklet?
* We are imperfect vessels and we leak (see Jer 2:13). We need to be
constantly re-filled with the Spirit.
* We must devote ourselves to the teaching of the Church and study the
Scriptures daily (Acts 2:42; 17:11), both of which help us grow (Acts
20:32).
* Faith comes through hearing the word of God (Rm 10:17). If we don't
increase in faith, can we be sure we'll remain in Him? This booklet
proclaims God's word to increase our faith.
* Like the early Church, we must be devoted to spreading God's word
(Acts 6:7) and feeding His sheep (Jn 21:17).

"Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ" (Catechism, 133). If
we're ignorant of Him, we cannot "remain in Him" (1 Jn 2:28). Read God's
word daily, and remain in Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, keep me faithful to Your teaching and never let me be
parted from You.

Promise: His "promise is no less than this: eternal life." —1 Jn 2:25

Praise: Bobby writes that the Lord, working through One Bread, One Body,
made his prison time not only endurable but the turning point of his life.

Forgiveness

In all marriages, partners hurt each other. Some hurts inflict deep wounds
and heartache that you think you will never recover from. Other hurts are
those daily attacks and insults that stockpile and end up eroding your sense
of emotional safety and trust and force partners to put up protective
barriers or strike back.

My husband and I have made some serious mistakes in our marriage so I know
what I'm talking about. I suppose that's why I'm grateful for forgiveness.
To give and receive forgiveness is the highest act of love. The art of
forgiveness allows the offending partner to be pardoned, absolved and set
free without punishment, which in marriage usually takes the form of
recrimination, sniping and hurling reminders of the past offence during an
argument. To extend forgiveness is to give up this form of torment.

But there are rewards for the forgiver too. Forgiveness allows the hurt
partner to be freed from carrying the pain, anger and bitterness and
obsessing, which is debilitating and soul-destroying.

We make a conscious decision to forgive and it doesn't mean the pain
evaporates instantly. If the hurt is deep, forgiveness is just the beginning
of a healing process. Just as physical injuries take time to heal, so do
emotional injuries. The desensitising of the wound can take months or years.

I know a couple in their 60s who survived his adultery. It took two years
for the wife to recover from the trauma of feeling her whole world had
collapsed. However, now they travel Australia in their retirement, holding
hands and gazing into each other's eyes, cherishing each other.

Time itself does not perform the healing. A passage of time allows the mind
to process the trauma and move through shock and disbelief, grief, rage,
insecurity, guilt, shame and blame. Healing is an active, conscious process,
which can only occur when you allow yourself to feel, not repress these
emotions. People who don't heal traumatic hurts through forgiveness can
carry festering wounds for a lifetime.

There's another impulse, which resides in the human psyche; the desire for
revenge, to hit back at the person who has hurt you. Victims of crime and
victims of infidelity in marriage often experience violent revenge
fantasies.

Christians say that Jesus gave a radical teaching on retaliation, which goes
completely against our base impulse, when he preached turning the other
cheek and refusing to retaliate when hurt.

Jesus taught that forgiveness is an on-going process. He instructed us to
forgive repeatedly, 70 times seven. You can take this to mean forgiving the
same offence over and over, which is necessary in the case of a traumatic
violation. It also means forgiving the multitude of offences that come our
way every day, from family members, friends, colleagues and strangers.

As we know, Jesus was big on forgiveness. It was his core teaching. He gave
humanity the great gift of forgiveness and when we receive divine
forgiveness for ourselves, forgiving other becomes mandatory. If we are
walking in God's grace, forgiveness flows from a spirit of humility and
awareness of our own failings.

If there's one thing our hatred-filled, war-torn world could use right now
is forgiveness. But let's start on a small scale. If you have been deeply
hurt by your wife or husband, the one person you trusted with your heart,
forgiveness will be the most challenging gift you'll ever give. But the
rewards are great. Forgiveness is the key to emotional healing and the
restoration of trust, love and happiness. Try it.

THE BEGINNINGS

"When the eighth day arrived for His circumcision, the name Jesus was
given the Child, the name the angel had given Him before He was
conceived." —Luke 2:21

When we become Christians, we start out as babies, "infants in Christ" (1
Cor 3:1). Just as babies must be taught to talk, walk, eat, clothe
themselves, etc., so also baby Christians must be taught to talk, walk,
think, feel, and act like Christ. We don't know how to live, or even to
start the day or the year. We must be taught every little thing. The world
has programmed us to begin the new year by staying up late, altering our
consciousness with alcohol, being preoccupied with petty pleasures, and
amusing ourselves with the TV-hype of parades and bowl games.

However, Jesus begins His days and years differently. He promised the
incredible sign of His birth to a virgin centuries before (Is 7:14). He
made her immaculately conceived a generation before. He began His life in
the obscurity of a teenager's womb in the country village of Nazareth (Lk
1:35). He began His public life as just one of the crowd waiting in line
to be baptized by John (Mt 3:13). Then He fasted for forty days in the
desert (Mt 4:2). Jesus began His days praying very early in the morning in
a deserted place (Mk 1:35).

Jesus' beginnings were hidden, quiet, humble, and prayerful. How will you
begin this year?

Prayer: Jesus, may I let Your mother Mary teach me to live as You did. May
this be a day of prayer for peace and justice in our world.

Promise: "Mary treasured all these things and reflected on them in her
heart." —Lk 2:19

Praise: "God Who is mighty has done great things for me, holy is His name"
(Lk 1:49).
