REPORT CARD

"Give me an account of your service, for it is about to come to an
end." —Luke 16:2

Whether or not you accept Jesus as Lord of your life, He is still your
Lord and Master. As your Owner, He has purchased you at the costly price
of His outpoured, precious blood (1 Cor 6:19-20). He is entitled to
receive your lifelong service. He expects a fruitful harvest from you (see
Jn 15:16).

Before you die, Jesus will eventually say to you: "Give Me an account of
your service, for it is about to come to an end" (Lk 16:2). He will then
settle accounts with you (see Mt 25:19).

What will your grade be? Will Jesus say to you: "I find that the sum of
your deeds is less than complete" in My sight (Rv 3:2)? Or will He say to
you: "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Mt 25:21, JB)?

Jesus exhorts us to always be ready to settle accounts with Him (see Mt
24:43ff; 25:13, 19). Therefore, "in whatever you do, remember your last
days, and you will never sin" (Sir 7:36). "Do not grow slack but be
fervent in spirit; He Whom you serve is the Lord" (Rm 12:11).

"Let us not grow weary of doing good" (Gal 6:9). "While we have the
opportunity, let us do good" (Gal 6:10). "Continue, my dear ones, to stand
firm in the Lord" (Phil 4:1) and to serve Him with gladness (Ps 100:2).

Prayer: Jesus, Master, let me never grow tired of serving You. "A
steadfast spirit renew within me" (Ps 51:12).

Promise: "They who received no word of Him will see Him, and they who have
never heard will understand." —Rm 15:21

Praise: Father Jim hears twenty hours of Confessions each week. He finds
his joy in leading people to receive forgiveness and mercy from Jesus.

THE PRIORITY OF REPENTANCE

"Who among you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not
leave the ninety-nine in the wasteland and follow the lost one until he
finds it?" —Luke 15:4

Almost half of the Catholics in the USA are not practicing their faith.
They don't even go to Mass on Sunday. They are "fallen-away." Yet, almost
all church personnel, finances, and activities are directed to the ones
who have not fallen away. The shepherds of the church today certainly
don't leave ninety-nine Christians and go to find a lost one. Therefore,
Jesus' idea of leaving the many in order to seek the one seems strange to
us.

Jesus has this "funny" idea because He puts a much higher priority on
repentance than we do. "Repent" is the first command Jesus gives in His
public ministry according to Mark's Gospel (see Mk 1:15). Calling us to
repentance is such a high priority for Jesus that He became a human being
and died on the cross so we would repent. Jesus promised: "Blest too are
the sorrowing" (Mt 5:4), especially those sorrowing for their sins. In the
spirit of Jesus, Paul was even happy that the Corinthians were sorrowful
since "sorrow for God's sake produces a repentance without regrets,
leading to salvation" (2 Cor 7:10). "There will likewise be more joy in
heaven over one repentant sinner than over ninety-nine righteous people
who have no need to repent" (Lk 15:7).

Repent. Go to Confession. Give Jesus and all heaven cause to rejoice.

Prayer: Father, may I rejoice over repentance more than over pleasure.

Promise: "Every one of us will have to give an account of himself before
God." —Rm 14:12

Praise: Sister Roberta spends hours each week praying for sinners to
return to the Lord in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

LOVE LOVE

"Any other [commandments] there may be are all summed up in this, 'You
shall love your neighbor as yourself.' " —Romans 13:9

If we would only love our neighbor as ourselves, we would fulfill the law,
and the whole world would be transformed. I once heard a pastor say just
the opposite. He said that the trouble with this world was that people did
love their neighbors as themselves. They hated themselves and treated
their neighbors accordingly. In our society, where we have an epidemic of
self-hatred, loving our neighbor as ourselves can be one of the worst
things we can do.

This explains why loving our neighbor as ourselves is the second
commandment. We must first love the Lord with all our hearts, all our
souls, and all our minds, and all our strength (Mt 22:37). Only when we
respond to the Lord's love with a commitment to love Him totally can we
love ourselves. Only when we lose our lives in total surrender to Jesus do
we find a healthy self-love (see Lk 9:24). Then as we love our neighbors
as ourselves, we don't hate or hurt them, but cherish and respect them.

The key to loving our neighbors is loving ourselves. The key to loving
ourselves is denying ourselves and totally loving the Lord. Love God Who
is Love (1 Jn 4:16). Love Love.

Prayer: Father, we love because You first loved us (1 Jn 4:19). You gave
Your Son to die for us (Jn 3:16). I decide to deny myself and love You
totally.

Promise: "None of you can be My disciple if he does not renounce all his
possessions." —Lk 14:33

Praise: St. Charles was a doctor of law at age 21, an archbishop at age
22, and a hero during the plague at age 37.

EXERCISE IN THE SPIRIT

"We have gifts that differ according to the favor bestowed on each of
us." —Romans 12:6

Doctors recommend regular physical exercise to keep our bodies in shape.
Physical therapists recommend specific exercises to enable an injured body
part to work normally. Musicians practice exercises on their instruments
to develop "muscle-memory." Thereby musicians hone their physical talents
to the point of being automatic, making them free to enter into the spirit
of the composition.

In an even greater way, Doctor Jesus commands us to exercise the gifts of
the Spirit He has given us (see Rm 12:6, RNAB). By exercising our
spiritual gifts, the body of Christ becomes more vigorous. Each spiritual
gift helps to heal the wounded parts of Christ's body when exercised
properly (1 Cor 12:9). By exercising our spiritual gifts regularly, we
become so "in tune" with the Spirit that we develop "Spirit-memory." We
are more quickly able to recognize the movements of the Holy Spirit, even
to the point that we become "co-workers" with the Spirit (1 Cor 3:9).

The risen Jesus has given us the gifts of the Holy Spirit (Eph 4:8, 10).
Now we have a choice. Will we exercise these gifts or make excuses for not
using them? (Lk 14:18ff)

Prayer: Holy Spirit, "I will not treat God's gracious gift as pointless"
(Gal 2:21). Fill me up and use me up.

Promise: "I want My house to be full." —Lk 14:23

Praise: St. Martin let himself be used as an instrument of the Holy Spirit
and was able to do great works of charity.

THERE'S A PLACE FOR US

"Their good works accompany them." —Revelation 14:13

There is a quantity and quality of fruit that God expects us to produce in
our earthly life (see Mt 21:33ff; Lk 13:6-9; Jn 15:1ff; 15:16). Our fruit
of personal holiness and "good works" (Rv 14:13) "must endure" (Jn 15:16).

God is much more than "the Man upstairs" Who is our Friend. He is also our
Judge, Who "will test the quality of" each person's good works and
holiness (1 Cor 3:13). Some of the dead who die in the Lord will not have
lived a life as fruitful as God expected it to be. God in His mercy will
still grant them eternal life. Thus, these deceased folks "will suffer
loss," yet "will be saved, but only as one fleeing through fire" (1 Cor
3:15).

There is a degree of "holiness without which no one can see the Lord" (Heb
12:14). What happens with the above folks who are granted eternal life yet
are lacking in the enduring fruit and holiness God requires? Jesus has
gone to "prepare a place" for us (Jn 14:2). As the above Scriptures
indicate, He also has to prepare us for the place. If we have died in
Christ, but aren't yet prepared for His place (see Heb 12:14), then Jesus
has to finish the job before He can take us into the heavenly feast. The
Catholic Church, guided by the Holy Spirit (Jn 16:13), has taught that the
above Scriptures and other truths indicate the existence of a state of
purification (see Mal 3:2-3) we call purgatory. In purgatory, the souls of
those who have not prepared themselves sufficiently in their time on earth
are purified for the awesome privilege of seeing God face to face. Since
they are fellow members of the body of Christ (Lk 20:38), we need them and
they need us (1 Cor 12:21ff). Let us help them with our prayers.

Prayer: Father, may I grow daily in holiness now rather than later.

Promise: "My soul trusts in His word." —Ps 130:5

Praise: Jessica practices the spiritual work of mercy to pray for the
dead.

November 1st All Saints

Jesus, help us to realize the make up of our eternal home.

Let us see the saints as inspirations of how to be willing to
live this life in honor and glory of You.

Let us see that You have a plan for all of us that will work
out perfectly.

Let us see in our minds eye how it must look in heaven with
all the saints praising and absolutely loving our triune God.

Let us recommit our lives to praying for all the people who
are still being purified in purgatory, especially those who
have no one to pray for them.

Let us realize that we are the eternal family of God.
Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

"I saw before me a huge crowd which no one could count from
every nation and race, people and tongue. They stood before
the throne and the Lamb." —Revelation 7:9

We know that later we shall be like Jesus. "We shall see Him as
He is" (1 Jn 3:2). After surviving the great period of trial (Rv 7:14),
we will stand "before the throne and the Lamb, dressed in long
white robes and holding palm branches" in our hands (Rv 7:9).
We shall celebrate the ultimate family reunion and be perfectly
happy forever, for our "reward is great in heaven" (Mt 5:12).

Already many have gone before us and share in the perfect
happiness of heaven. It won't be very long before we join them.
This sure hope of heavenly happiness is so overwhelmingly
wonderful that we keep ourselves pure as Jesus is pure (1 Jn 3:3),
live a life of total commitment to the Lord, "consider the
sufferings of the present to be as nothing" (Rm 8:18), face death
fearlessly, make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19), have peace
under any circumstances (see Phil 4:7), and rejoice in the Lord
always (Phil 4:4).

We are thrilled (to put it mildly) about the eternal happiness of
heaven. We are even more excited about the One Who made it
all possible, Jesus Christ. We cry out "in a loud voice, 'Salvation
is from our God, Who is seated on the throne, and from the
Lamb!' " (Rv 7:10)

We are even more excited about the One Who made it all possible, Jesus
Christ. We cry out "in a loud voice, 'Salvation is from our God, Who is
seated on the throne, and from the Lamb!' " (Rv 7:10)

Prayer: Father, make my life on earth of the highest quality. May I lead
thousands of people to You and go to heaven as soon as possible.

Promise: "They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of
the Lamb!" —Rv 7:14

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who has made it possible to make saints of
us all!
