MANY HAPPY RETURNS!

"Return, O Israel, to the Lord, your God; you have collapsed through your guilt. Take with you words, and return to the Lord." -Hosea 14:2-3

The Lord will never leave us, but we can sin and so choose to leave Him. If we have sinned, we must return to the Lord. We return to the Lord by saying "to Him, 'Forgive all iniquity' " (Hos 14:3) and by admitting that our human efforts will not save us (see Hos 14:4). We return by changing our hearts and going to Confession. We repent of our rebellion and humble ourselves before the Lord (see Jer 3:13, 14).

We return to the Lord by paying our tithes. "Yet you say, 'How must we return?' Dare a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! And you say, 'How do we rob You?' In tithes and in offerings!" (Mal 3:7-8) We return by changing our lifestyle. The Lord warns us: "Turn from your evil ways and from your wicked deeds" (Zec 1:4).

When we return to the Lord, we will find that His joy (see Ps 51:14), peace, love, freedom, power, mercy, compassion, wisdom, thanksgiving, hope, faith, and more will return to us. When we repent, we remove the wall of sin which separated us from the Lord, and the Lord's grace and love return to our lives. Many happy returns!

Prayer: Father, baptize me in repentance (Lk 3:3). May I repent to a degree seldom seen in our world.

Promise: "Straight are the paths of the Lord, in them the just walk, but sinners stumble in them." -Hos 14:10

Praise: St. Augustine, one of the Chinese Martyrs, was baptized, then ordained a priest shortly thereafter. He and his companions chose to die rather than deny the Lord of Life.

FATHER-HEALER

"Yet, though I stooped to feed My child, they did not know that I was their Healer." -Hosea 11:4

Do you think your heavenly Father wants to heal you? Does He want to heal you completely? Does He want to heal you now? Many people are not sure how to answer these questions. They know that their Father loves them and can heal them. Yet they don't know if or when He will heal them. They know there are many factors in healing, and this makes them unsure if their Father will heal them.

We should not let the many factors in healing overshadow the loving, healing, present Fatherhood of God; rather, our Father's love should make us almost forget the complications surrounding healing. We should be like little children who, when hurt, run to their parents for healing and think of little else.

Our heavenly Father is trying to make us so aware of His love that everything else fades into the background. He is drawing us to Him "with human cords, with bands of love" (Hos 11:4). He fosters us "like one who raises an infant to his cheeks" (Hos 11:4). Our Father stoops to feed us and wants to help us more than we want help (Hos 11:4). May we translate all this tender, fatherly love into the assurance that our Father is our Healer.

Prayer: Father, may I expect healing from You now.

Promise: "Cure the sick, raise the dead, heal the leprous, expel demons. The gift you have received, give as a gift." -Mt 10:8

Praise: Receiving the Eucharist daily has kept Lou's heart open to trust in God's fatherly love, and to remind him to daily offer himself again to his Father.

"KILLED WITH KINDNESS"

"The more abundant his fruit, the more altars he built; the more productive his land, the more sacred pillars he set up." -Hosea 10:1

The Lord wants us to "learn the easy way" rather than the hard way. He wants to love us into repentance rather than punish us. He wants to gift us, not shame us (see Lk 15:22). How then will we respond to the Lord's forgiveness, love, and mercy? Will we respond in loving repentance or choose to be "spoiled rotten?" Will we abuse God's love and become even more selfish, or will His crucified love lead us to deny ourselves?

The more Hosea loved Gomer, the more unfaithful she became. The more the Lord blessed Israel, the more devoted she became to false gods. If we respond to God's love in this perverted way, He has no choice but to give us the "tough love" of justice and punishment. To break through our selfishness, the Lord must let us have the consequences of our sins, i.e., sickness, failure, frustration, emptiness, slavery, pain, etc.

Will you let the Lord "kill you with kindness," or will you kill yourself with selfishness? Repent. He loves you. Go to Confession. He loves you. Die to self. He loves you. Respond to His love with love.

Prayer: Father, may I repent because things are so good, before they become so bad.

Promise: Jesus "summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority to expel unclean spirits and to cure sickness and disease of every kind." -Mt 10:1

Praise: Theresa prayed for twenty years that her husband could stop drinking. Then he did.

PLANTING A HURRICANE

"When they sow the wind, they shall reap the whirlwind." -Hosea 8:7

The prophet Hosea compares our sins to planting the wind. However, he compares the fruit of our sins to a hurricane! (Hos 8:7) Each sin we commit is like a gust of wind. If the wind is unabated by sincere repentance, the winds gather and escalate to a hurricane or tornado that blows us and our nation further away from Jesus.

Jesus and the Father have sent the wind of the Holy Spirit to blow us back to God (Jn 3:5). When we operate in the Spirit, we sow the wind (see Jn 3:8). As our good works are multiplied, the wind of the Spirit gathers to form a strong, driving wind (Acts 2:2). We sow the wind of obedience to God, and we reap the whirlwind of the Spirit (Hos 8:7), far stronger than any tornado. The Spirit wants to use us to blow down Satan's strongholds (2 Cor 10:4). Imagine strongholds which have plagued our society for generations being destroyed in a whirlwind, for example, the scourge of illegal drugs, abortion, human greed which perpetuates widespread hunger, etc. What a joyful day it will be to see Satan's strongholds toppled in a whirlwind!

"Make no mistake about it, no one makes a fool of God! A man will reap only what he sows. If he sows in the field of the flesh, he will reap a harvest of corruption; but if his seed-ground is the Spirit, he will reap everlasting life. Let us not grow weary of doing good; if we do not relax our efforts, in due time we shall reap our harvest" of faith and justice (Gal 6:7-9).

Prayer: "Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me."

Promise: "Beg the Harvest Master to send out laborers to gather His harvest." -Mt 9:38

Praise: St. Maria resisted what she knew to be corruption for what was infinitely more valuable, her killer's soul. As she lay dying she forgave her murderer and received Jesus with joy.

SEXUAL ABUSE

"When the crowd had been put out He entered and took her by the hand, and the little girl got up." -Matthew 9:25

Many people have been sexually abused. Sexual abuse includes not only incest or rape but also self-abuse through masturbation or other sexual sins and abuse by others through impure looks, touches, words, or thoughts (see Mt 5:28). Sexual sin always abuses, degrades, and dehumanizes. Therefore in our society, so preoccupied with sexual sin, there are very many abused and defiled people.

Jesus alone can heal the sexually abused. Some, through no fault of their own, have been disrespected and lusted after as mere sex objects. Jesus can heal them from years of being damaged and insulted by others' sexual sins. Others are at fault for abusing themselves and others by sexual sin. These people may need far more than healing. The wages of sin is death (Rm 6:23), and many are spiritually dead. However, Jesus can not only heal the sick but also raise both the physically and spiritually dead (Mt 10:8).

Often we think we're in love, but we're really in lust. Jesus frees us of the ravages of lust's counterfeit love by giving us true love. He promises: "I will espouse you to Me forever: I will espouse you in right and in justice, in love and in mercy; I will espouse you in fidelity" (Hos 2:21-22). Jesus' love heals us from the effects of sexual sin and raises us from the dead.

Prayer: Jesus, make me pure as You are pure (1 Jn 3:3).

Promise: "Jesus...said, 'Courage, daughter! Your faith has restored you to health.' That very moment the woman got well." -Mt 9:22

Praise: St. Anthony, a doctor at 22, heeded the call to heal souls as well as bodies. He fought sin by encouraging frequent communion and eucharistic adoration.

July 4th Fourteenth Sunday in ordinary time

Jesus, the year is half done, so help us to inventory our prayer
time, and help us know if we are really spending enough time
with You.

Let us look and see if our prayers are, "give me", or are they
giving You praise and glory.

Jesus, You are the Lord of Lords, and King of Kings, let us be
in awe of having the privledge of being able to talk and praise
You face to face in Your Eucharistic presense.

Jesus, protect and guide us all safely home to You, when You call.

Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

Sunday PERFECT POWER

Incredibly, the all-powerful God has chosen to share His power
with us! In Christ, He has given us "power to tread on...all the
forces of the enemy" (Lk 10:19). We have so much power that in
Jesus even the demons are subject to us (Lk 10:17). Jesus has
even sent the Holy Spirit so that we, His disciples, can be
"clothed with power from on high" (Lk 24:49).

God has let us share in His awesome power. However, in His
mercy, He has chosen to grant us an even greater, more
efficacious power: the power of redemptive suffering, especially
as manifested in the power of the cross. "The message of the
cross is complete absurdity to those who are headed for ruin,
but to us who are experiencing salvation it is the power of God"
(1 Cor 1:18). The gospel of the cross of Christ "is the power of
God leading everyone who believes in it to salvation" (Rm 1:16).

When we obey Jesus' command to deny our very self and take
up our daily cross (Lk 9:23), we abandon our lives into God's
hands (Ps 31:6). Then God says to us: "My grace is enough for
you, for in weakness power reaches perfection" (2 Cor 12:9).
Willingly live in the weakness of the cross, so "that the power
of Christ may rest upon" you (2 Cor 12:9).
