This week, Jesus, is the start of Lent.

Please Lord, open my heart, mind and soul so that I can really come to You this Lent
and grow in true awareness of what You mean to me in my life.

Let me spend time with You in adoration and find out what it is that You really want
me to give up, change or correct.

Let me start on a journey that will truly change my life and how I really am as a
Christ filled follower of Yours.

Amen and Amen.

Sunday THE WORDS OF GOD

"Anyone who hears My words and puts them into practice is like the wise
man who built his house on rock." -Matthew 7:24

We can stand on God's words even more firmly than we can stand on a
rock. God's words are permanent (Ps 119:160). They endure forever and
are firm as the heavens (Ps 119:89). When we stand upon God's word, He
steadies our footsteps (Ps 119:133) and keeps us from stumbling
(Ps 119:165). He sets our feet upon the rock of His word and makes firm
our steps (Ps 40:3).

The literal meaning of John 8:31 is that we make our home in the word of
God. Therefore, in standing upon the rock of the word of God, we abide in
His word to the point that we build our home on that rock (Mt 7:24). In
building our lives on the rock of God's word, we are building our spiritual
house on a firm and sure Foundation (1 Cor 3:11). Jesus, the living and
incarnate Word of God (Jn 1:1), is the Foundation (1 Cor 3:11), the Rock
(1 Cor 10:4), and the Cornerstone (Mt 21:42). "Therefore, thus says the
Lord God: See, I am laying a Stone in Zion, a Stone That has been tested,
a precious Cornerstone as a sure foundation: he who puts his faith in It
shall not be shaken" (Is 28:16).

With the psalmist, let us say: "I considered my ways and turned my feet
to Your decrees" (Ps 119:59). Stand upon the rock foundation of Jesus,
the Word of God. You will not be shaken.

THE $64,000 QUESTION

"On what authority are You doing these things? Who has given You the power to do them?" -Mark 11:28

Like the religious leaders of Jesus' day, we have many questions to ask Jesus about His authority. We ask Jesus if He will exercise His authority to heal cancer, restore a broken marriage, bring a paralytic out of a wheelchair, or free a person from mental illness. Jesus said: "Full authority has been given to Me both in heaven and on earth" (Mt 28:18). Yet how can His authority be applied to the pressing problems of our lives?

Jesus will answer all our questions about His authority if we first answer His question about John's baptism of repentance (Mk 11:29-30). We must come under the authority of Jesus through repentance and obedience. Then we can not only have our questions answered but can even move in the authority of the Lord. In fact, we can even do greater by far than Jesus ever did (Jn 14:12).

However, we are a stiff-necked and rebellious people. We don't even want to hear about repentance - much less do it. We desperately need someone to minister to us - to open our hearts (Lk 2:35), teach, and mother us. Mothers have a way of helping their children obey. On this Saturday when we honor our Blessed Mother, ask Mary to mother you. May Mary help us to repent and obey Jesus, have our questions answered, and exercise His authority in our lives.

Prayer: Jesus, send Your mother to teach me about loving You and living in Your power. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for me.

Promise: "He saved me from evil of every kind and preserved me in time of trouble." -Sir 51:12

Praise: Betty has consecrated her family to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts.

GOD'S FAMILY TREE

"Now will I praise those godly men, our ancestors, each in his own time." -Sirach 44:1

Think of your godly ancestors. Think of the person that taught you to pray, of Grandma who "prayed all the time," of Dad's holy boldness, and of Uncle Joe, who loved the Church (see Eph 5:25) and died with Jesus' precious name on his lips.

Remember the virtues of the godly men and women in your life (Sir 44:10). Recall Dad's honesty, courage, justice, and love. Think of Mom's purity, kindness, faithfulness, and love.

Thank God for every Christian you've ever met. Thank God especially for the Christians in your ancestry and in your more immediate family. "Their wealth remains in their families, their heritage with their descendants; through God's covenant with them their family endures, their posterity, for their sake" (Sir 44:11-12). You are blessed because of those who have gone before you. "Their bodies are peacefully laid away, but their name lives on and on" (Sir 44:14).

What spiritual heritage are you giving to the next generation? Will your children, grandchildren, friends, etc. retell your wisdom at family gatherings and proclaim your praise at church? (Sir 44:15) Will God and your family be proud of you and your holy life?

Prayer: Father, may ages to come call me blessed (see Lk 1:48).

Promise: "When you stand to pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance so that Your heavenly Father may in turn forgive you your faults." -Mk 11:25

Praise: St. Casimir was noted for "untainted purity of body and soul." Out of love and solidarity for the poor, he lived a simple lifestyle, very rare for a prince.

HOW TO BE HEALED

"He began to call out, 'Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!' " -Mark 10:47

It's hard to admit weakness, sin, or even sickness. The blindness of pride often prevents us from being healed of other kinds of blindness. After Bartimaeus began calling out, "many people were scolding him to make him keep quiet, but he shouted all the louder" (Mk 10:48). After we humble ourselves, the next obstacle to healing is often worrying about what other people think of us. Often, to receive healing; it is necessary to look like a fool in the eyes of the world.

"Then Jesus stopped and said, 'Call him over' " (Mk 10:49). Bartimaeus "threw aside his cloak, jumped up and came to Jesus" (Mk 10:50). His jump was a great leap of faith. Blind people don't make sudden movements. If they jump up, they don't know what might happen since they don't know what's above them. Jesus said to Bartimaeus: " 'Be on your way. Your faith has healed you.' Immediately he received his sight and started to follow Him up the road" (Mk 10:52).

What's standing in the way of your healing? Are you too proud to admit you need help? Are you too proud to confess your sins? Are you too "cool" to be healed? Are you paralyzed by the thought of being laughed at? Are you unwilling to become a fool for Christ? (1 Cor 4:10) If you jump up or down, do you believe Jesus will catch you? Don't let anything or anyone prevent you from receiving your healing and your Healer, Jesus.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, "I want to see" (Mk 10:51).

Promise: "The Most High possesses all knowledge, and sees from of old the things that are to come: He makes known the past and the future, and reveals the deepest secrets." -Sir 42:18-19

Praise: St. Katharine gave up millions of dollars to live in the poverty of serving the most indigent. Pride did not prevent her from following Jesus or serving minorities.

NEW SIGNS AND WONDERS

"Give new signs and work new wonders; show forth the splendor of Your right hand and arm." -Sirach 36:5

The writer of Sirach prayed for God to give new signs and new wonders. Micah prayed: "As in the days when You came from the land of Egypt, show us wonderful signs" (Mi 7:15). The early Church prayed: Lord, "grant to Your servants, even as they speak Your words, complete assurance by stretching forth Your hand in cures and signs and wonders to be worked in the name of Jesus, Your holy Servant" (Acts 4:29-30).

Jesus promised that signs and wonders would accompany those who profess their faith (Mk 16:17). He also promised that we would do works greater by far than even His glorious works (Jn 14:12). Why? It's because whatever we ask for in His name He will do (Jn 14:12-14).

Therefore, we should ask the Lord to do signs and wonders in our lives and through us in the lives of others. "Ask for a sign from the Lord, your God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky!" (Is 7:11) May the Lord "enlighten your innermost vision that you may know...the immeasurable scope of His power in us who believe" (Eph 1:18-19). His "power now at work in us can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine - to Him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus through all generations, world without end. Amen" (Eph 3:20-21).

Prayer: Father, may the Acts of the Apostles be the acts of my life.

Promise: "The Son of Man has not come to be served but to serve - to give His life in ransom for the many." -Mk 10:45

Praise: The Lord works wonders in Dorothy's life, from opening parking spaces to matching her children with godly spouses.

"A LIVING SACRIFICE" (Rm 12:1)

"The just man's sacrifice is most pleasing, nor will it ever be forgotten." -Sirach 35:6

The heart of love is sacrifice. Jesus was sacrificed on Calvary in the greatest act of love in history. The Lord calls us to offer our bodies to Him as living sacrifices (Rm 12:1). We are called to sacrifice "homes, brothers and sisters, mothers, children and property" for Jesus and the gospel (Mk 10:30). "He who observes the commandments sacrifices a peace offering. In works of charity one offers fine flour, and when he gives alms he presents his sacrifice of praise" (Sir 35:1-2). Good deeds and generosity are also sacrifices, and "God is pleased by sacrifices of that kind" (Heb 13:16). Through Jesus, we can "continually offer God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips which acknowledge His name" (Heb 13:15).

By our lives of sacrifice, we share in the sacrifice of Jesus on Calvary. In the sacrifice of the Mass, we perpetuate, make present, and apply the continuing effects of Jesus' once-for-all sacrifice on the cross (Heb 10:10, 12). In summary, our lives in Christ are lives of sacrifice centered on Jesus' sacrifice on Calvary, which continues to be present through the sacrifice of the Mass. Be living sacrifices (Rm 12:1).

Prayer: Jesus, may I give, pray, and work sacrificially. May the word for this Lent be "sacrifice."

Promise: "To keep the law is a great oblation." -Sir 35:1

Praise: John gave up job and personal freedom to care for his adult mentally ill son.
