WHIPPED OR CREAM?

"The Sanhedrin called in the apostles and had them whipped." -Acts 5:40

You start a Bible study at work, and people are coming to Jesus. Then the boss calls you into his office. He says your witness to Jesus is a violation of company policy, suspends you without pay for a week, and tells you the next offense will result in your termination. You've just been "whipped" and warned not to speak again about the name of Jesus (Acts 5:40). How will you respond? Are you full of joy (Acts 5:41) or are you just "whipped"?

Similarly, Peter once was accused of being a disciple by a mere "servant girl" (Lk 22:56). When he was accused of being with Jesus, Peter was "whipped." He wilted under the pressure and denied he even knew Jesus. After meeting the risen Jesus several times and receiving the Holy Spirit, Peter was accused by the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling body, of teaching about Jesus (Acts 5:26ff). Under this most intimidating pressure, Peter rose to the occasion. He replied: "Better for us to obey God than men!" (Acts 5:29) As punishment, he was whipped brutally. Peter responded by joyfully praising God for being judged worthy of ill-treatment for the sake of Jesus' name (Acts 5:41). Then he never stopped talking about Jesus (Acts 5:42).

Will you be like Peter the "whipped" or like Peter the cream of the crop? Will you meet the risen Jesus, receive the Holy Spirit, and never stop witnessing about Jesus?

Prayer: Jesus, You are the Resurrection (Jn 11:25). Fill me with a fearlessness rooted in Your victory over death.

Promise: "The Lord is my Light and my Salvation; whom should I fear?" -Ps 27:1

THE OBEDIENT REBEL

"We testify to this. So too does the Holy Spirit, Whom God has given to those that obey Him." -Acts 5:32

We Christians rejoice (see Ps 40:9) in living lives of obedience (1 Pt 1:2). We realize that "whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure the wrath of God" (Jn 3:36). We especially realize that if we truly love Jesus, we will obey Him (Jn 15:10). We obey all lawful authority because in this way we obey God (Rm 13:1). We submit to one another because of reverence for Christ (Eph 5:21). We obey God and man.

Nevertheless, sometimes lawful authority acts unlawfully, that is, contrary to God's law. In that case, we must choose divine obedience and civil disobedience. Instead of obeying God and man, we must obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29).

Where in your life are there situations where you must obey God rather than men? Is the law to pay our income taxes incompatible with the law to respect and protect the lives of babies in the womb? Is the law prohibiting prayer in public schools contradictory to God's law that we pray always? (see Lk 18:1; 1 Thes 5:17) Are we nullifying God's Word in favor of man's laws? (see Mk 7:13) Do we "have many other such practices besides"? (Mk 7:13) Obey God and man whenever you can. Otherwise, obey God and thereby disobey man.

Prayer: Father, may I obey You even if that makes me a rebel in the eyes of a sinful world.

Promise: "He does not ration His gift of the Spirit." -Jn 3:34

Praise: Thomas lives in prophetic poverty rather than fund government-sponsored abortions.

DARKNESS TO LIGHT

"He who acts in truth comes into the light, to make clear that his deeds are done in God." -John 3:21

The apostles, when released from prison, didn't run away in order to save themselves from future danger and legal trouble. No, they placed their trust in God and obeyed His command to teach in the Temple (Acts 5:20-21). Many heard the Good News as a result of their obedient faith and trust.

Paul and Silas were set free from prison (Acts 16:26), but they didn't run away to try to save themselves from future danger. Instead, they placed their trust in God and obeyed His command to minister the Good News of salvation to the jailer and his household (Acts 16:31ff). If they had run away, there would have been a dead jailer, a grieving wife and household, and unattended wounds all over the bodies of Paul and Silas. But by taking their place and teaching the Good News, there was a saved jailer, a saved household (Acts 16:31-34), and a new church formed in Philippi, which resulted in the letter to the Philippians. Paul and Silas knew Jesus was their Savior, so they trusted in His saving help and carried out His wishes instead of fleeing to "save themselves."

Where are you in danger? Is Jesus calling you to stand firm in the midst of the present danger and trust in Him as your Savior? Is He calling you to take your place and announce the Good News? (Acts 5:20).

Prayer: Jesus, may we live no longer for ourselves, but for You (2 Cor 5:15; Gal 2:20).

Promise: "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not die but may have eternal life." -Jn 3:16

Praise: Ann prays the Scriptures when she suffers through a sleepless night.

"After I have been with You all this time, you still do not know Me?" -John 14:9

Philip and James followed Jesus for years but abandoned Him in His hour of need (Mk 14:50). Even after seeing the risen Jesus on several occasions (see 1 Cor 15:7), they remained locked up because of the weakness of their faith (Jn 20:26). Eventually, they strongly believed in Jesus, became His witnesses even to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8), and did works far greater than Jesus did (Jn 14:12).

What years with Jesus and several resurrection appearances did not do was done by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Throughout this year, Lent, and Easter season, we may have been treading water. We may be going nowhere fast and have even less of a faith-commitment to the Lord than years ago. He has done great things for us, but we haven't responded in faith and love.

However, we have hope; Pentecost is soon to come. The Spirit will convict (Jn 16:8), free, and heal us. He will be stirred up in us and send us out from behind the locked doors of the upper room to all creation to be Jesus' witnesses. The glory and victory of Easter are still available for those who will repent, believe, and receive the Holy Spirit of Pentecost.

Prayer: Father, stir into flame the Spirit I received at Baptism and Confirmation (2 Tm 1:6).

Promise: "I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and in which you stand firm. You are being saved by it at this very moment." -1 Cor 15:1-2

Praise: After receiving the Holy Spirit in the upper room, both St. Philip and St. James boldly followed the footsteps of Jesus, even to death as martyrs.

CHURCH MILITANT OR CHURCH DEFEATED?

"They were filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak God's word with confidence." -Acts 4:31

The apostles were thrown into prison by the Jewish leaders for healing a crippled man and then "teaching the people and proclaiming the resurrection of the dead in the person of Jesus" (Acts 4:2). They were then threatened by the leaders to never mention the name of Jesus again (Acts 4:17) and were released. The apostles returned to the other disciples and prayed for complete assurance when they proclaimed the Word of God (Acts 4:29-30). After this prayer, they were filled with the Holy Spirit. They continued to speak God's Word with confidence (Acts 4:31).

Like the first believers in the risen Jesus, we must not be alarmed that the powerful of the world rage and conspire against us (see Acts 4:25). The Church and its members have been attacked for centuries. God in heaven simply laughs (Ps 2:4). He has eternal, almighty power. The powerful of the world wield their power for but a moment in time.

Therefore, we must pray for that same confidence, assurance, and boldness that the apostles possessed. God wants us to confidently know that if He is for us, no one can be against us (Rm 8:31). "He Who is in you is greater than he who is in the world" (1 Jn 4:4, RSV-CE). We are more than conquerors in Jesus (Rm 8:37). Persevere in spreading the Word of God. We are invincible when we are rooted in Jesus and stand securely in the center of His will.

Prayer: May we stir up the Holy Spirit in the world, Lord Jesus. Raise up many teenagers and adults to accept holy, confident, and bold religious vocations and to speak God's word with confidence.

Promise: "No one can enter into God's kingdom without being begotten of water and Spirit." -Jn 3:5

Praise: St. Athanasius fought the Arian heresy for over fifty years. He held firmly to the truth even after being exiled five times for his faith.

Jesus, help us to really start to understand Your divine mercy.

It is never ending.

Your love for us is not even really understandable.

We are finite and You are infinite.

We love and have mercy mostly on those that like us and do good to us.

But You are giving mercy to all people, no matter what they have done.

You love us with a love that knows no bounds.

Please, Jesus, help us to become better at giving mercy and being merciful to all those in our lives.

Amen and Amen.

"One of the twelve, Thomas (the name means 'Twin'), was absent when Jesus came. The other
disciples kept telling him: 'We have seen the Lord!' His answer was, 'I will never believe it.' " -John 20:24-25

This world of "doubting Thomases" is profoundly unimpressed by our church services and
Easter decorations. The stone is not rolled away as far as they are concerned. It sees Christians
as hypocrites, who really don't believe the doctrines they mouth.

Jesus comes to the doubting Thomases and says: "If you think seeing is believing, I'll give you
something to see." He shows them His wounds like He did Thomas, or knocks them to the ground
like He did Saul (Acts 9:4). He calls us, the believers, to share all things in common and sell our
property and goods (Acts 2:44-45). Jesus makes His presence and resurrection so concrete even
doubting Thomas confesses: "My Lord and My God!" (Jn 20:28)

Will you take resurrection risks? Will you have the courage to show your wounds? Will you put
your money where your mouth is? Will you unlock your upper room of fear? (Jn 20:26) Jesus'
resurrection Kingdom "does not consist in talk but in power" (1 Cor 4:20). "With power the
apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus" (Acts 4:33).
