RISE TO THE OCCASION
"Thomas said in response, 'My Lord and my God!' " -John 20:28
Because Jesus is God, Jesus is risen (see Rm 1:4). Only God has power over death (Jn 5:21, 26).
Because Jesus is God, Jesus is Lord. Only God has the right to demand the constant worship and total obedience due to the Lord.
Because Jesus is God and risen Lord, none of us is the lord of our own life. "While we live we are responsible to the Lord, and when we die we die as His servants. Both in life and in death we are the Lord's" (Rm 14:8). We "live no longer" for ourselves, "but for Him" (2 Cor 5:15). The life we now live is not our own, "but it is a life of faith in the Son of God, Who loved [us] and gave Himself" for us (Gal 2:20).
It is not right to believe in Jesus' resurrection without dethroning ourselves and enthroning Him as Lord God. It is not right to believe in His resurrection without witnessing for Jesus in word and in a radically surrendered lifestyle. It is not right to say we believe in His resurrection and yet be locked up by fear like the apostles or by doubt like Thomas (Jn 20:19ff). It is right to receive the Holy Spirit (Jn 20:22) and proclaim Jesus as risen Lord and God (1 Cor 12:3).
Prayer: Father, may I confess with my "lips that Jesus is Lord" and believe in my "heart that" You "raised Him from the dead" (Rm 10:9).
Promise: "Crowds from the towns around Jerusalem would gather, too, bringing their sick and those who were troubled by unclean spirits, all of whom were cured." -Acts 5:16
Praise: Praise Jesus, "the First and the Last and the One Who lives" (Rv 1:18). Praise Jesus forever and ever!

FULLY ALIVE
"Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation." -Mark 16:15
Jesus' physical body has been raised from the dead. How many members of His body, the Church, need to be raised from the dead? How many parts of Christ's body are functioning to the degree to which God has called them? Is God's body, the Church, spiritually quadriplegic or comatose, with many parts of His body paralyzed? We need a resurrection, animation, and activation of many parts of Christ's body.
Peter and John had been spiritually paralyzed and deadened by their fear and sins. After Pentecost, however, the power and "self-assurance of Peter and John" was amazing (Acts 4:13ff). Even when the religious leaders threatened Peter and John in order to return them to their paralysis, "Peter and John answered, 'Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight for us to obey you rather than God. Surely we cannot help speaking of what we have heard and seen" (Acts 4:19-20).
Pope Leo the Great taught: "Christian, recognize your dignity and, now that you share in God's own nature, do not return to your former base condition by sinning. Remember Who is your Head and of Whose body you are a member" (Catechism, 1691). Christians, come to life. Act vigorously and fully as members of Christ's body. "Awake, O sleeper, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light" (Eph 5:14).
Prayer: Father, make me fully alive in and for Christ.
Promise: "Finally, as they were at table, Jesus was revealed to the Eleven. He took them to task for their disbelief and their stubbornness, since they had put no faith in those who had seen Him after He had been raised." -Mk 16:14
Praise: Alleluia! He is risen! "Death has no more power over Him" (Rm 6:9). Alleluia!

YOUR RESURRECTIONS
"By what power or in whose name have men of your stripe done this?" -Acts 4:7
Peter denied Jesus three times when Jesus was about to be crucified. Even after seeing Christ risen at least three times (see Lk 24:34; Jn 20:19, 26), Peter rebelled against the risen Christ by returning to the fishing business (cf Mk 1:17; Jn 21:3). Then Peter made a fool of himself by jumping in the lake with his clothes on (Jn 21:7). Peter was a far cry from the man Jesus called him to be.
A few weeks later, Peter boldly witnessed for Jesus to thousands of people (Acts 2:41; 4:4). After being arrested for this witness, he even challenged "the leaders, the elders, and the scribes" (Acts 4:5) to repent of rejecting Jesus and to accept Jesus' name as the only "name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be saved" (Acts 4:12).
What happened to Peter? How did he change from the death of fear and sin into the life of freedom and faith? Peter was "filled with the Holy Spirit" (Acts 4:8). The Holy Spirit will eventually raise our bodies from the dead (Rm 8:11). That will be our last resurrection. Before that, the Spirit will raise us from the death of cowardice, rebellion, and selfishness into new, abundant, and eternal life.
By the Spirit, rise now so you will rise later. "Awake, O sleeper, arise from the dead" (Eph 5:14).
Prayer: Father, raise me from any death in my life.
Promise: "They made a cast, and took so many fish they could not haul the net in." -Jn 21:6
Praise: "Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, He Who in His great mercy gave us new birth: a birth unto hope which draws its life from the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" (1 Pt 1:3). Alleluia!

I'LL PASS
"Everything written about Me in the law of Moses and the prophets and psalms had to be fulfilled." -Luke 24:44
Wouldn't it have been a wonderful thing to have walked with Jesus and the two disciples on the road to Emmaus? We would have heard every Scripture in the Old Testament that prophesied Jesus' Passion, death, and resurrection.
Well, the Church has just read to us in the daily liturgies of Lent many of those same Old Testament Scriptures that Jesus opened up for the disciples (Lk 24:27). The disciples passed those Scriptures on to many others; these Scriptures have since been passed on by the Church, all the way down to us.
During Easter, we focus on celebrating the resurrection of Jesus. The Lord Himself, however, testifies: "If [you will] not listen to Moses and the prophets, [you] will not be convinced even if one should rise from the dead" (Lk 16:31). Faith in the risen Jesus comes through hearing the word of God (Rm 10:17). Therefore, during this season of Easter, attend Mass as frequently as possible, even daily, to hear the Word of God. Meditate on this Word day and night (Ps 1:2; Jos 1:8). Treasure it in your heart (Lk 2:19). Devour the prophetic Word during this season of Easter (Jer 15:16).
What kind of passing will you do with the Lenten and Easter Scriptures that prophecy about Jesus? Will you pass them on to those you meet? Or will you merely pass them up, and let new life in Christ pass you by?
Prayer: Father, give me a heart to seek You, ears to hear You, and the will to worship, love, and serve You.
Promise: "God raised [Jesus] from the dead, and we are His witnesses." -Acts 3:15
Praise: "O Lord, our Lord, how glorious is Your name over all the earth!" (Ps 8:2) Alleluia to You, risen Lord Jesus, our Savior!

BIBLE WALK II
"Two of them that same day were making their way to a village named Emmaus seven miles distant from Jerusalem, discussing as they went all that had happened. In the course of their lively exchange, Jesus approached and began to walk along with them." -Luke 24:13-15
During the forty days of Lent, many of the Scripture passages read at Mass showed that the Messiah must suffer and die (see Lk 24:26-27). If we have listened to the Lenten readings as intently as the two disciples on the road to Emmaus listened to Jesus, our hearts would have been burning all throughout Lent as we heard these readings (Lk 24:32). Instead of a seven-mile Bible walk to Emmaus, we took a forty-day Bible walk through the Lenten desert.
Now Jesus challenges us to take another fifty-day Bible walk throughout the Easter season. The Church offers us a sequel to the Lenten Scripture story. In the first four days of this second Bible walk, the Church offers the equivalent of a movie trailer: God pours out the Holy Spirit on all mankind (Acts 2:33), three-thousand people receive the Spirit at Pentecost and join the Church (Acts 2:41), and the apostles use the gifts of the Spirit to heal a man crippled from birth (Acts 3:2, 7). The fifty-day Bible sequel only gets better in the next forty-six days!
The forty- and fifty-day Bible walks are essential to our preparation to receive a new outpouring of the Spirit at Pentecost. Get on your Bible-walking shoes and attend as many of the Masses of the Easter season as possible. Absorb the Easter Scriptures. Don't miss "the rest of the story."
Prayer: Father, may I desire to read the daily Easter Scripture readings far more than I've ever anticipated a movie or book sequel.
Promise: "He interpreted for them every passage of Scripture which referred to Him." -Lk 24:27
Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who pours out His Spirit upon us.

In the first four days of this second Bible walk, the Church offers the equivalent of a movie trailer: God pours out the Holy Spirit on all mankind (Acts 2:33), three-thousand people receive the Spirit at Pentecost and join the Church (Acts 2:41), and the apostles use the gifts of the Spirit to heal a man crippled from birth (Acts 3:2, 7). The fifty-day Bible sequel only gets better in the next forty-six days!
The forty- and fifty-day Bible walks are essential to our preparation to receive a new outpouring of the Spirit at Pentecost. Get on your Bible-walking shoes and attend as many of the Masses of the Easter season as possible. Absorb the Easter Scriptures. Don't miss "the rest of the story."
Prayer: Father, may I desire to read the daily Easter Scripture readings far more than I've ever anticipated a movie or book sequel.
Promise: "He interpreted for them every passage of Scripture which referred to Him." -Lk 24:27
Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who pours out His Spirit upon us.

IMMERSION IN THE RISEN JESUS
" 'What are we to do, brothers?' Peter answered: 'You must reform and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ.' " -Acts 2:37-38
Why was Mary Magdalene the first person known to have met the risen Christ? It was because she was immersed into Jesus. At dawn, Mary Magdalene was at Jesus' tomb to be near His dead body. When His body was gone, she exclaimed: "The Lord has been taken from the tomb!" (Jn 20:2) She remained weeping at Jesus' tomb even after Peter and John had left (Jn 20:11). She was so preoccupied with Jesus that she hardly noticed "two angels in dazzling robes" (Jn 20:12). Mary even volunteered to carry Jesus' body back to the tomb or somewhere, if she could find out where His body was (Jn 20:15). She was so preoccupied that she didn't stop to think that she may not have been able to lift the body or drag it through the streets. Mary was so immersed in Jesus that all it took was for Jesus to speak her name and she immediately recognized Him and clung to Him (Jn 20:16-17).
Mary Magdalene was immersed in Jesus through her conversion, deliverance from seven demons, daily service to Jesus and the apostles (Lk 8:2-3), and especially by being baptized into Jesus' death at the foot of His cross (Jn 19:25). She was united with Christ "through likeness to His death" and became the first person known to be united to Him in His resurrection (Rm 6:5).
Prayer: Father, give me an Easter season similar to the first one Mary Magdalene celebrated.
Promise: "It was to you and your children that the promise was made, and to all those still far off whom the Lord our God calls." -Acts 2:39
Praise: Alleluia! The Lord spoke and it was done (Ps 33:9).

"WE ARE HIS WITNESSES" (Acts 2:32)
"Go and carry the news." -Matthew 28:10
In Matthew's Gospel, the first commands Jesus gives to the first people who saw Him after His resurrection are: "Do not be afraid! Go and carry the news" of My resurrection (Mt 28:10). After His resurrection, Jesus speaks primarily through His witnesses, the members of His body. Shortly before He died, Jesus directed the Jewish leaders to listen to those who had heard Him speak (see Jn 18:21). Now Jesus speaks to the world through the witnesses He has chosen (Acts 10:41). The risen Lord backs up His witnesses with power (Mk 16:17ff) and authority (Lk 10:16). When people don't believe us, His witnesses, Jesus gets upset (Mk 16:14).
The duty of a witness is simple. A witness simply testifies to what they have "heard and seen" (Acts 4:20). The only issue for a witness is whether or not they will speak. Organized crime gets a lot of mileage out of silencing witnesses through fear of death, and so do enemies of Jesus (see Mt 28:12ff). Others sneer at news of the resurrection and insult His witnesses (see Acts 17:18, 32). Nonetheless, Jesus tells us: "Do not be afraid!" (Mt 28:10) Jesus has the ultimate "witness protection" program. He has triumphed over death! Fear and death have "no more power over" Jesus and His witnesses (Rm 6:9).
Jesus tells us: "You are to be My witnesses" (Acts 1:8). "Do not be afraid. Go on speaking and do not be silenced" (Acts 18:9). "Go and carry the news" (Mt 28:10) that Jesus is risen from the dead and all who believe in Him have eternal life (Jn 3:16).
Prayer: Risen Jesus, I will abide "in confidence" (Ps 16:9) and not be afraid to tell others about the risen life You offer.
Promise: "It was impossible that death should keep its hold on [Jesus]." -Acts 2:24
Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who always was, always is, and always will be.
