On May 4, 1897, Pope Leo XIII proclaimed: "We decree and command that throughout the whole Catholic Church, this year and in every subsequent year, a novena shall take place before Whit-Sunday (Pentecost), in all parish churches." It has been reported that Pope Leo XIII was inspired to mandate the Pentecost novena because of a letter from a housewife in Italy. Pope John Paul II has reiterated Pope Leo XIII's command for a worldwide Pentecost novena, although the novena can be prayed at any time - not only before Pentecost.

CROSS-EXAMINATION
"When the Paraclete comes, the Spirit of truth Who comes from the Father - and Whom I Myself will send from the Father - He will bear witness on My behalf. You must bear witness as well." -John 15:26-27
The Holy Spirit is called "the Paraclete." This title is sometimes translated "helper" or "advocate." However, a paraclete is not a helper in general. For instance, if someone helped you carry your groceries, he is your helper but not your paraclete. To be a paraclete means specifically to help in a courtroom. Paracletes help witnesses who are being cross-examined.
As we witness for Jesus in the courtroom of this world, various people attack us, libel our way of life (1 Pt 3:16), and try to discredit our testimony. They attempt to tear us to shreds. Jesus, the faithful Witness (Rv 1:5), was actually torn to shreds when He took the witness stand of Calvary. When we are witnessing for Jesus and being attacked by the world, we need all the help we can get. We need the Helper, the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit. Being our Paraclete, the Spirit will give us the words to say on the witness stand of life. We "will not be the speakers"; the Paraclete will be speaking in us (Mt 10:20).
Be a witness for Jesus. See your need for and receive the Paraclete.
Prayer: Father, may I make a strong stand for Jesus and thereby see my need for the Holy Spirit.
Promise: "After she and her household had been baptized, she extended us an invitation: 'If you are convinced that I believe in the Lord, come and stay at my house.' " -Acts 16:15
Praise: Tom planned to use a Scripture verse as part of a motivational speech. He opened His Bible to the wrong verse, read it, cried tears of repentance, and received Jesus into his life right there at the podium.

Sunday DESPERATELY NEEDING THE SPIRIT?

"Do not be distressed or fearful." -John 14:27
When Jesus told His disciples not to be distressed, they didn't realize they would soon be
very distressed. Likewise, when Jesus tells us not to be distressed in today's Gospel reading,
we may not realize that this is to be taken personally and immediately. We think that this
message is not specifically for us and is generally intended for everybody. Moreover, we may
think that things are going well in our lives, and therefore we don't expect any immediate
distress. However, the disciples were wrong, and we might be mistaken as well. They were on
the threshold of the most distressful time of their lives. Although we may not know it, we may
desperately need the Holy Spirit's help (see Jn 14:26).
Assume that two weeks from today you will need to receive a new Pentecost, or else be
overwhelmed by distress. Whether or not this happens, the wisest thing is to be ready for
anything by being filled with the Holy Spirit. May you desire a new Pentecost more than you
want anything else. Jesus has promised: "This much have I told you while I was still with you;
the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit Whom the Father will send in My name, will instruct you in
everything, and remind you of all that I told you" (Jn 14:25-26). Come, Holy Spirit!
Prayer: Father, may I want the Holy Spirit in fullness more than I want to breathe. Renew my
Baptism and Confirmation.
Promise: "It is the decision of the Holy Spirit, and ours too, not to lay on you any burden
beyond that which is strictly necessary." -Acts 15:28
Praise: Alleluia! Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life! (Jn 11:25) Alleluia forever!

Bible Prayers for the Coming of the Holy Spirit
In 1897 Pope Leo XIII was inspired to call every Catholic Church in the world to pray nine
days for the coming of the Spirit. We pray this novena from the day after the feast of the
Ascension to the day before Pentecost each year. Pope John Paul II has reiterated Pope Leo's

I prayed this novena in 1975, and it was one of the greatest events in my life. The Spirit

DESPERATELY NEEDING THE SPIRIT?
"Do not be distressed or fearful." -John 14:27
When Jesus told His disciples not to be distressed, they didn't realize they would soon be very distressed. Likewise, when Jesus tells us not to be distressed in today's Gospel reading, we may not realize that this is to be taken personally and immediately. We think that this message is not specifically for us and is generally intended for everybody. Moreover, we may think that things are going well in our lives, and therefore we don't expect any immediate distress. However, the disciples were wrong, and we might be mistaken as well. They were on the threshold of the most distressful time of their lives. Although we may not know it, we may desperately need the Holy Spirit's help (see Jn 14:26).
Assume that two weeks from today you will need to receive a new Pentecost, or else be overwhelmed by distress. Whether or not this happens, the wisest thing is to be ready for anything by being filled with the Holy Spirit. May you desire a new Pentecost more than you want anything else. Jesus has promised: "This much have I told you while I was still with you; the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit Whom the Father will send in My name, will instruct you in everything, and remind you of all that I told you" (Jn 14:25-26). Come, Holy Spirit!
Prayer: Father, may I want the Holy Spirit in fullness more than I want to breathe. Renew my Baptism and Confirmation.
Promise: "It is the decision of the Holy Spirit, and ours too, not to lay on you any burden beyond that which is strictly necessary." -Acts 15:28
Praise: Alleluia! Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life! (Jn 11:25) Alleluia forever!

A BATTLE OF WILLS
"Again the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them." -Acts 16:7
The Holy Spirit prevented Paul and Silas from preaching the gospel in the province of Asia (Acts 16:6). The Spirit also prevented them from going to Bithynia (Acts 16:7). In the same way, often the Holy Spirit does not go along with our plans. Instead, He prevents us from "doing our own thing."
Because the Holy Spirit tells us we're wrong and even proves it (see Jn 16:8), we're tempted to lie to the Holy Spirit (see Acts 5:3). We want to refuse the Spirit or at least stifle (1 Thes 5:19) and sadden the Spirit (Eph 4:30) because the Spirit doesn't even try to fit into our lives. Rather, the Spirit wants to immerse us into His divine life. The Holy Spirit is God and acts accordingly. Thus we can see why some of our families have for generations opposed the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51).
Two weeks from tomorrow, the Church will celebrate Pentecost. To receive the Holy Spirit of Pentecost, we must be willing to change our plans, deny ourselves, repent, be hated by the world (Jn 15:18), and even suffer for love of Jesus. Will you celebrate Pentecost?
Prayer: Father, may life in the Spirit be more important to me than my life.
Promise: "I chose you out of the world." -Jn 15:19
Praise: Seventeen-year-old Elaine lives out her decision to live for Jesus by being involved with music and youth ministry, and by spending time with Jesus in daily Mass and weekly adoration.

WILL YOUR FAITH LAST? (see Lk 18:8)
"Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me, or else, believe because of the works I do." -John 14:11
If we believe in Jesus, we will do greater works than He did (Jn 14:12). By faith, we can move mountains (Mt 17:20), conquer the world (1 Jn 5:5), obtain God's promises, break the jaws of lions, put out raging fires, and escape the devouring sword (Heb 11:33-34). By faith, we accept the grace of salvation (Eph 2:8). Definitely, faith is a very great gift from God.
However, as great as faith is, it must be permanent. Otherwise, we have believed in vain (1 Cor 15:2). Only by lasting faith do we hold fast to the gospel (1 Cor 15:2). Therefore, it is extremely important to protect and develop our faith. Our daily prayer should be: "I do believe. Help my lack of faith!" (Mk 9:24, our transl.)
Faith is confidence, assurance, and conviction (Heb 11:1). Faith is a result of a good relationship. Therefore, faith can increase or decrease frequently because all relationships continually deepen or lessen. Consequently, we need to maximize our communication with the Lord so as to deepen our relationship with Him, thereby strengthening our faith. We need the Scriptures (Rm 10:17), Christian community, the breaking of the bread (the Eucharist), and the prayers (Acts 2:42). We need ever-increasing and everlasting faith. Lord, "increase our faith" (Lk 17:5).
Prayer: Father, deepen my faith in You so that I will die for you as did Sts. Philip and James.
Promise: "He was seen by five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still alive, although some have fallen asleep. Next He was seen by James; then by all the apostles. Last of all He was seen by me." -1 Cor 15:6-8
Praise: St. James "the Less" was an apostle who is never mentioned individually in the gospels as saying or doing anything. His only activity was to hear Jesus' call in his life and respond by wholeheartedly following Jesus. He died as a martyr and is part of the foundation of the Church (Eph 2:20).

READING AND RIGHTING
"God, Who reads the hearts of men, showed His approval by granting the Holy Spirit to them just as He did to us." -Acts 15:8
It's important to learn to read. This is true not only of reading books, but especially of reading our hearts. For example, Peter thought he would give his life for Jesus, but he denied Christ three times. Peter misread his heart. We too may think we know Jesus deeply and personally, but we may be deceiving ourselves (1 Jn 1:6; 2:4). We may even be tragically surprised on Judgment Day if we've misread our hearts (see Mt 7:22-23; 25:44).
Although we must get a reading on our hearts, we don't have the power to do this ourselves. Our hearts are so deceitful that we can't read them (Jer 17:9). The Lord alone can read our hearts (Acts 15:8; 1:24). Pause for a moment and ask Him to do this right now...
After getting a reading on our hearts, we may need to ask the Sacred Heart of Jesus to purify our hearts. The Lord will use His Word to do this. It will penetrate our hearts, divide the good from the bad, and judge "the reflections and thoughts of the heart" (Heb 4:12). We will need faith in the Lord (Acts 15:9) to let Him continue this purification since it will cause something like a burning in our hearts (Lk 24:32) and even in our bones (Jer 20:9).
On the first Easter day, Jesus read and purified the hearts of two disciples. Let Him read and purify your heart this Easter season.
Prayer: Father, may I fall into the purifying, consuming fire of Your love (see Heb 12:29).
Promise: "All this I tell you that My joy may be yours and your joy may be complete." -Jn 15:11
Praise: St. Athanasius almost single-handedly rescued the Church from the heresy of Arianism, which maintained that Jesus was not divine. He believed so strongly that Jesus was God that he was exiled at least six times during his life.

It's important to learn to read. This is true not only of reading books, but especially of reading our hearts. For example, Peter thought he would give his life for Jesus, but he denied Christ three times. Peter misread his heart. We too may think we know Jesus deeply and personally, but we may be deceiving ourselves (1 Jn 1:6; 2:4). We may even be tragically surprised on Judgment Day if we've misread our hearts (see Mt 7:22-23; 25:44).
Although we must get a reading on our hearts, we don't have the power to do this ourselves. Our hearts are so deceitful that we can't read them (Jer 17:9). The Lord alone can read our hearts (Acts 15:8; 1:24). Pause for a moment and ask Him to do this right now...
After getting a reading on our hearts, we may need to ask the Sacred Heart of Jesus to purify our hearts. The Lord will use His Word to do this. It will penetrate our hearts, divide the good from the bad, and judge "the reflections and thoughts of the heart" (Heb 4:12). We will need faith in the Lord (Acts 15:9) to let Him continue this purification since it will cause something like a burning in our hearts (Lk 24:32) and even in our bones (Jer 20:9).
On the first Easter day, Jesus read and purified the hearts of two disciples. Let Him read and purify your heart this Easter season.
Prayer: Father, may I fall into the purifying, consuming fire of Your love (see Heb 12:29).
Promise: "All this I tell you that My joy may be yours and your joy may be complete." -Jn 15:11
Praise: St. Athanasius almost single-handedly rescued the Church from the heresy of Arianism, which maintained that Jesus was not divine. He believed so strongly that Jesus was God that he was exiled at least six times during his life.

JESUS THE WORKER
"Be slaves of Christ the Lord." -Colossians 3:24
Because our work is one of the main ways we express our love for Jesus, we must be working according to His will. Ask yourselves the following questions:
* Am I working to further the Lord's kingdom? The harvest is still great and becoming greater, but the workers are still few (Mt 9:37).
* Would I quit my job if the Lord told me to? Matthew, James, John, Peter, and Andrew quit their jobs at Jesus' command.
* Am I working for the right reason? Am I working for the Lord (Col 3:23) or for perishable food? (Jn 6:27)
* Do I consider my work a way of worshipping the Lord? (see Heb 13:16)
* Am I a witness for the risen Jesus on my job or do I give Jesus "the silent treatment?"
* Do I keep holy the Lord's Day by not working or shopping on Sunday? (see Ex 20:8ff)
* Is my work for Jesus worthy of persecution? (Acts 5:41)
* Will the Lord find me working for Him when He returns? (Lk 12:43)
If Jesus isn't Lord of our work, then He's not Lord of our lives. Through the intercession of St. Joseph the Worker, turn over your work and life to Jesus.
Prayer: Father, may my way of working be understandable only in the light of Your risen Son.
Promise: "Where did this Man get such wisdom and miraculous powers? Isn't this the carpenter's Son?" -Mt 13:54-55
Praise: St. Joseph left his job and his customer base on three different occasions to obey the command of the Lord (see Mt 2:13, 19, 22).
