May 12th Ascension Sunday
Jesus, we celebrate Your Ascension into heaven.
You came to be one of us and pay the price for our sins.
You absolutely deserve to rise up into heaven and sit on Your throne of glory.
Jesus, teach us to be truly grateful to You, and the Father, for loving us and for the Holy
Spirit to guide us.
Christ, we are so weak, and so normal, and we have such a short attention span, that we so
soon forget our fervor.
Rekindle in us the fire of the Holy Spirit, that we may be renewed, and receive Your gifts
that will let us do Your will all the days of our lives.
Let us prepare for Pentecost by going to confession, and getting any stain of sin off of
our souls, and open our hearts to allow the Holy Spirit to come and make His abode in us.
Let us go on fire with desire to serve You in all things, and in all of our actions.
Let us be Your hands, Your heart, Your eyes, in other words Your instuments of love.
Thank you Jesus.
Amen and Amen.
Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

Sunday LOST LOVE OR NEW LOVE?

"He was lifted up before their eyes in a cloud which took Him from their sight." -Acts 1:9
Scripture links "the promise of the Father" (Lk 24:49) to the Ascension of Jesus to the Father
(Acts 1:4-5). Just before Jesus ascended to His Father, He told His disciples, "Wait, rather,
for the fulfillment of My Father's promise...within a few days you will be baptized with the
Holy Spirit" (Acts 1:4-5).
Jesus promised that we would do greater by far than He did (Jn 14:12). How could this be? Jesus
explained that this is because He goes to the Father (Jn 14:12-13). When Jesus goes to the
Father, sparks fly, love flies. The Holy Spirit is often defined as the love which arcs between
the Father and the Son. Their love cannot be contained, and thus the Spirit arcs wildly between
Them. So great is this passionate love that nothing in the universe could possibly hold back
the Holy Spirit. The gifts of the Spirit descend to us on earth (Eph 4:11). Heaven is now open
to us, and we are opened to heaven.
We who are joined with Jesus through Baptism are also lifted up in Spirit and filled with the
Spirit, the "promise of the Father." Let Jesus' Ascension result in great love in heaven and
immeasurable power and holiness on earth. "Receive the Holy Spirit" (Jn 20:22).
Prayer: Father, on this third day of the Pentecost Novena, make me see the inadequacies of my
love for You and make me desire new and greater life and love.
Promise: "I send down upon you the promise of My Father." -Lk 24:49
Praise: "He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit; seen by the angels;
preached among the Gentiles, believed in throughout the world, taken up into glory" (1 Tm 3:16).

Bible Prayers for the Coming of the Holy Spirit
In 1897 Pope Leo XIII was inspired to call every Catholic Church in the world to pray nine
days for the coming of the Spirit. We pray this novena from the day after the feast of the
Ascension to the day before Pentecost each year. Pope John Paul II has reiterated Pope Leo's
call to pray for the coming of the Spirit.
I prayed this novena in 1975, and it was one of the greatest events in my life. The Spirit
was stirred up in me (see 2 Tm 1:6-7), my Confirmation was renewed, and I was filled with the
Holy Spirit. In thanksgiving to the Spirit, I have compiled these Bible-based prayers for a
new Pentecost. If we pray these prayers sincerely (see Lk 11:13), we will see the Spirit do
more than we have ever asked for or imagined (Eph 3:20).

OPEN-HEART SURGERY
Apollos established "from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Messiah." -Acts 18:28
While in the city of Ephesus, Apollos unpacked the Old Testament Scriptures that referred to Jesus and established that Jesus was the Christ, the Messiah (Acts 18:28). In so doing, Apollos imitated Jesus, Who while walking on the road to Emmaus, unpacked the Old Testament Scriptures "beginning with Moses and all the prophets" and "interpreted for them every passage of Scripture which referred to Him" (Lk 24:27).
As we progress through the Pentecost Novena, we increase our thirst to receive the Holy Spirit. A great way to open ourselves up to the Holy Spirit is to review the Scriptures which reveal Jesus' identity. The Church has been doing this throughout the daily and Sunday Eucharistic readings during the seasons of Lent and Easter. To help us receive the Holy Spirit more deeply this Pentecost, take some time today and next week to look back over the key Scriptures of Lent and Easter. Focus especially on the readings of Holy Week, which summarize the Scriptures that prove that Jesus is the Messiah. May the Word of God open your heart to receive the Holy Spirit in a new and life-changing way (see Lk 24:32) this Pentecost.
Prayer: Father, stir into flame the Holy Spirit in my life today and next week (2 Tm 1:6).
Promise: "The Father already loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God." -Jn 16:27
Praise: After meeting at midday Mass, Sarah and Mary continued to nurture their faith by sharing it with one another over lunch.

Apollos established "from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Messiah." -Acts 18:28
While in the city of Ephesus, Apollos unpacked the Old Testament Scriptures that referred to Jesus and established that Jesus was the Christ, the Messiah (Acts 18:28). In so doing, Apollos imitated Jesus, Who while walking on the road to Emmaus, unpacked the Old Testament Scriptures "beginning with Moses and all the prophets" and "interpreted for them every passage of Scripture which referred to Him" (Lk 24:27).
As we progress through the Pentecost Novena, we increase our thirst to receive the Holy Spirit. A great way to open ourselves up to the Holy Spirit is to review the Scriptures which reveal Jesus' identity. The Church has been doing this throughout the daily and Sunday Eucharistic readings during the seasons of Lent and Easter. To help us receive the Holy Spirit more deeply this Pentecost, take some time today and next week to look back over the key Scriptures of Lent and Easter. Focus especially on the readings of Holy Week, which summarize the Scriptures that prove that Jesus is the Messiah. May the Word of God open your heart to receive the Holy Spirit in a new and life-changing way (see Lk 24:32) this Pentecost.
Prayer: Father, stir into flame the Holy Spirit in my life today and next week (2 Tm 1:6).
Promise: "The Father already loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God." -Jn 16:27
Praise: After meeting at midday Mass, Sarah and Mary continued to nurture their faith by sharing it with one another over lunch.

Pray: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of Your love.
V. Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created,
R. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray.
O God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of Your faithful, grant that by that same Holy Spirit, we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

"When she has borne her child, she no longer remembers her pain." -John 16:21
During World War II, four Allied soldiers who were encamped behind enemy lines in Germany discovered critical enemy battle plans. If the Allied leaders knew of these plans, thousands of lives could be spared. The four soldiers decided to ski into neutral Switzerland to communicate the plans. On the way through the steep mountains of the Alps range, one soldier fell and broke his leg. After careful deliberation, the other three soldiers told their fallen comrade that they must leave him alone overnight and would return for him the next day after the plans were communicated. Returning the next day, they asked the man how he fared through the night. "I was in agony," he replied. "But this morning God sent the most beautiful sunrise I had ever seen. When I think back on this ordeal of suffering, I will remember the beauty rather than the pain." That's what Jesus refers to in today's gospel (Jn 16:21). The Lord often saves the best for the moments we are most in need.
Today we begin the Pentecost Novena, nine days of prayer to "receive the Holy Spirit" (Jn 20:22) more deeply at Pentecost. We will suffer as we are challenged by the Holy Spirit, stretched by the call of the Lord, and persecuted by the enemy. After Pentecost, however, we will remember the joy, not the suffering. Therefore, make any changes necessary in the next nine days to make room for the Holy Spirit in your life.
Prayer: Come, Holy Spirit! Do in me whatever You must in order to do through me whatever You will.
Promise: "Do not be afraid. Go on speaking and do not be silenced, for I am with you." -Acts 18:9-10
Praise: St. Damien spent his life ministering Jesus to a colony of lepers on the island of Molokai. In love, he so identified with them that he contracted leprosy himself and died with them.

HELP WANTED
"When Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul began to occupy himself totally with preaching the word." -Acts 18:5, RNAB
St. Paul came alone to the Greek city of Corinth (Acts 18:1-3). Paul had been given the spiritual gift of teaching. However, he was an outreach team of one, and so his impact was limited. He found work as a tentmaker to support himself (Acts 18:3). It is certainly possible to work a full-time job and evangelize effectively; for example, many in Presentation Ministries have full-time secular jobs and still volunteer our free time to evangelize. Nonetheless, it is clear that Paul's evangelistic outreach was multiplied when his co-workers Silas and Timothy arrived (Acts 18:5).
Paul's two co-workers were exercising the spiritual gift of assistance or "helps" (see 1 Cor 12:28). Their practical and financial support apparently freed Paul from having to spend so much time as a tentmaker. Now that Silas and Timothy were in Corinth to round out the outreach team, Paul could be totally occupied with evangelization, preaching, and teaching (Acts 18:5).
Some of you who read this have also been called by God to be helpers or assistants (1 Cor 12:28). When that gift is not being used or welcomed, the spread of God's Word will be limited. Preachers, evangelists, and teachers need spirit-filled assistants and helpers. If you have this calling, you generally won't receive top billing on the program. However, "be content with what you have" (Heb 13:5) and use your gift bountifully. Those who minister cannot be as fruitful without the Spirit working freely through their helpers.
Prayer: Father, during the upcoming Pentecost Novena, raise up many assistants and helpers to bring our nation back to You.
Promise: "You will grieve for a time, but your grief will be turned into joy." -Jn 16:20
Praise: Juan repented and went to Confession for the first time in fifteen years. Now he leads a Bible Study at his workplace.

WHAT'S WRONG?
"He has set the day on which He is going to 'judge the world with justice' through a Man He has appointed - One Whom He has endorsed in the sight of all by raising Him from the dead." -Acts 17:31
When Paul had proclaimed to the Athenians that Jesus had been risen from the dead, "some sneered, while others said, 'We must hear you on this topic some other time' " (Acts 17:32). Today, the reaction to Jesus' resurrection is similar. Over a month ago, we began the Easter season. We may have tried to proclaim that Jesus is risen. Yet "who has believed what he has heard from us?" (Rm 10:16)
We may feel like blaming those that we've talked to about Jesus' resurrection for hardening their hearts. But how do we know their hearts? Rather, we ought to remove the planks from our own eyes by repenting of not witnessing more for Christ, and not backing up our witness with a radical life of faith (see Mt 7:5). Maybe the first persons to believe in the risen Christ this Easter season will be those who claim to already be believers.
We can bear witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with power (Acts 4:33). Let's ask the Spirit to prove us wrong about our compromises with the world (see Jn 16:8). He will guide us to all truth (Jn 16:13). Then we will be able to guide others to the ultimate truth: "Jesus is risen!"
Prayer: Father, make these next ten days among the most eventful of my life. Give me a new Pentecost.
Promise: He "will announce to you the things to come." -Jn 16:13
Praise: Teenagers Sam and Monica, brother and sister, read the Bible each evening before going to sleep.

HOME-BODY - One Bread, One Body, 5/7/2013
On May 4, 1897, Pope Leo XIII proclaimed: "We decree and command that throughout the whole Catholic Church, this year and in every subsequent year, a novena shall take place before Whit-Sunday (Pentecost), in all parish churches." It has been reported that Pope Leo XIII was inspired to mandate the Pentecost novena because of a letter from a housewife in Italy. Pope John Paul II has reiterated Pope Leo XIII's command for a worldwide Pentecost novena, although the novena can be prayed at any time - not only before Pentecost.

HOME-BODY
"He led them up into his house, spread a table before them, and joyfully celebrated with his whole family his newfound faith in God." -Acts 16:34
During an earthquake, a jailer was about to commit suicide (Acts 16:27). Paul and Silas stopped the jailer, who took them home. "They proceeded to announce the word of God to him and to everyone in his house" (Acts 16:32). Then "he led them up into his house" (Acts 16:34). The house is the place to receive salvation.
Before the conversion of the jailer and his family, Paul and Silas converted Lydia. "After she and her household had been baptized, she extended us an invitation: 'If you are convinced that I believe in the Lord, come and stay at my house' " (Acts 16:15). After Paul and Silas were released from prison, "the two first made their way to Lydia's house" (Acts 16:40). The house is the place of conversion, healing, and community.
When Jesus sent out His apostles to proclaim God's kingdom, He commanded them: "Stay at whatever house you enter and proceed from there" (Lk 9:4). After the first Christian Pentecost, those filled with the Holy Spirit broke bread, that is, celebrated the Eucharist, in their homes (Acts 2:46). The house is the base for establishing God's kingdom and the heart of Christian community.
Let the risen Christ make your house the place to be.
Prayer: Father, make my house a domestic church.
Promise: "It is much better for you that I go. If I fail to go, the Paraclete will never come to you, whereas if I go, I will send Him to you." -Jn 16:7
Praise: Twice monthly for the last several decades, Victoria hosts her home-based community prayer meeting in her home.

During an earthquake, a jailer was about to commit suicide (Acts 16:27). Paul and Silas stopped the jailer, who took them home. "They proceeded to announce the word of God to him and to everyone in his house" (Acts 16:32). Then "he led them up into his house" (Acts 16:34). The house is the place to receive salvation.
Before the conversion of the jailer and his family, Paul and Silas converted Lydia. "After she and her household had been baptized, she extended us an invitation: 'If you are convinced that I believe in the Lord, come and stay at my house' " (Acts 16:15). After Paul and Silas were released from prison, "the two first made their way to Lydia's house" (Acts 16:40). The house is the place of conversion, healing, and community.
When Jesus sent out His apostles to proclaim God's kingdom, He commanded them: "Stay at whatever house you enter and proceed from there" (Lk 9:4). After the first Christian Pentecost, those filled with the Holy Spirit broke bread, that is, celebrated the Eucharist, in their homes (Acts 2:46). The house is the base for establishing God's kingdom and the heart of Christian community.
Let the risen Christ make your house the place to be.
Prayer: Father, make my house a domestic church.
Promise: "It is much better for you that I go. If I fail to go, the Paraclete will never come to you, whereas if I go, I will send Him to you." -Jn 16:7
Praise: Twice monthly for the last several decades, Victoria hosts her home-based community prayer meeting in her home.
