THE WAITING IS THE HARDEST PART
"Then He breathed on them and said: 'Receive the Holy Spirit.' " -John 20:22
Many of us reading this reflection are baptized and confirmed Catholics. It was our privilege to sacramentally "receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38). However, since God the Father has blessed us with intellect and free will, we may choose to "stifle the Spirit" (1 Thes 5:19) in our lives. Will you take advantage of the Feast of Pentecost, or let another year come and go?
Guard against not recognizing your true dignity as an adopted child of God (Rm 8:14-15). Though we are each unique, we "were baptized into one body" (1 Cor 12:13). How are you using your spiritual gifts to advance the Kingdom of God? Sin is our greatest enemy, and no sin is committed in a vacuum. "If you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the evil deeds of the body, you will live" (Rm 8:13). Let's live for God and for one another.
Jesus, the Word of God, has revealed everything necessary for our salvation. Jesus said, "I will ask the Father and He will give you another Paraclete - to be with you always" (Jn 14:16). Trust Jesus and His Word. "Receive the Holy Spirit" (Jn 20:22).
Prayer: Jesus, I ask You to re-invigorate the Holy Spirit in my life and in the life of the Church. Come, Holy Spirit!
Promise: "The Paraclete, the Holy Spirit Whom the Father will send in My name, will instruct you in everything, and remind you of all that I told you." -Jn 14:26
Praise: Praise the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, our Hope! Alleluia!

Pentecost Novena Day 9 - Saturday
Pray: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of Your love.
V. Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created,
R. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray.
O God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of Your faithful, grant that by that same Holy Spirit, we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Be silent
Pray: Father, renew my Baptism and Confirmation. Stir into flame the gifts of the Spirit in my life (see 2 Timothy 1:6-7).
On or near Pentecost, ask another Christian to lay hands on you (see Acts 19:6) and pray for you to receive the Holy Spirit. After receiving these prayers, thank the Holy Spirit for coming to you, go to Mass as often as possible, and share your faith in Jesus. Come, Holy Spirit!

"For two full years Paul stayed on in his rented lodgings, welcoming all who came to him. With full assurance, and without any hindrance whatever, he preached the reign of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ." -Acts 28:30-31
In its original Greek, the Acts of the Apostles ends with the word translated "without hindrance" (Acts 28:31). This seems an abrupt and less than grand finale. Moreover, it seems unusual for Luke to claim that Paul proclaimed God's kingdom "without hindrance" after Paul had been confined to a room for two years, under house arrest, with a soldier at the door (Acts 28:16).
Luke ends Acts by showing that there is no chaining God's word (2 Tm 2:9) and no stopping the Christian people. You can lock us up, but we'll still take the Gospel to the ends of the earth by world-changing intercession, mountain-moving faith, and enemy-converting redemptive suffering. You can kill us, but we will rise from the dead and be resurrection witnesses with even greater power.
The only thing that can stop us is us. Repent. Live in faith. Obey God. Receive the Spirit. Be His witness (Acts 1:8). Renew the face of the earth (Ps 104:30). Come, Holy Spirit of Pentecost! Come again! Come now! Alleluia!
Prayer: Father, may this be the greatest Pentecost.
Promise: "There are still many other things that Jesus did, yet if they were written about in detail, I doubt there would be room enough in the entire world to hold the books to record them." -Jn 21:25
Praise: Pope St. John I suffered imprisonment for love of truth and unity during which he ultimately died for his faith in Jesus.

PENTECOST AND THE POPE
"...Peter was to glorify God." -John 21:19
Jesus said that He would found His Church on the Rock, Peter. Jesus entrusted to Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven (Mt 16:18-19). Jesus has been consistent with that statement. In the last chapter of the four Gospels, Jesus asks Peter three times: "Do you love Me?" (see Jn 21:15-17) He chose Peter to be the preacher of Pentecost (Acts 2:14) and the first preacher to the Gentiles (Acts 10:5ff). Jesus anointed Peter with such healing power that the masses were healed merely by Peter's shadow falling on them (Acts 5:15-16).
Peter continues to be an important part of God's plan, especially through his successors, the Popes. The early Church needed Peter, and the present Church does as well. Peter was the leader of the first Pentecost. Do you think it will be different this Pentecost? Jesus is the same today as He was yesterday (Heb 13:8). His calls are irrevocable (Rm 11:29). Jesus doesn't change His plans; He continues them. Peter, the Pope, and Pentecost continue to go together.
To receive the Holy Spirit in fullness, listen to and obey the Pope, as the early Church listened to Peter at the first Christian Pentecost. Listen to the Pope about repentance, conversion, holiness, purity, lifestyle, birth control, family, and community. In obeying Peter's successors, you obey Jesus Who chose them (see Lk 10:16). Then you receive the Holy Spirit, Who is "given to those that obey" Jesus (Acts 5:32).
Prayer: Father, may I love to be submissive to the authority You have established. Come, Holy Spirit!
Promise: "When Jesus had finished speaking He said to him, 'Follow Me.' " -Jn 21:19
Praise: Dan harbored resentment for many years against his stern, unloving father. Jesus softened both of their hearts and now they are close.

SEVEN DAYS MAKE ONE WEAK
"I do not pray for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through their word." -John 17:20
When St. Paul was on trial before the Jewish Supreme Court, the Sanhedrin, he tricked his enemies into fighting each other so that he could get off the hook. However, Paul's stratagem backfired on him. The dispute between Paul's enemies grew so turbulent that the Roman "commander feared they would tear Paul to pieces. He therefore ordered his troops to go down and rescue Paul from their midst and take him back to headquarters" (Acts 23:10). That night, after Paul's plans had failed and he was sitting in jail, the Lord appeared to Paul and announced that Paul would be His witness in Rome, the center of the Western world (Acts 23:11). In our weakness, God's power reaches perfection (2 Cor 12:9).
On this seventh day of the Pentecost novena, we need to realize our weakness so that we will depend on and cry out for the power of the Holy Spirit (see Acts 1:8). When Jesus had ascended and His apostles were at their weakest, they received the Holy Spirit. Throughout history, Christians have received the Spirit when persecuted and even imprisoned for their faith in Jesus. The Lord has "singled out the weak of this world" to receive the Spirit and "to shame the strong" (1 Cor 1:27).
To receive the Spirit, choose the weakness of gospel poverty, persecution, obscurity, docility, simplicity, and sacrifice. Embrace the weakness of the cross (see 2 Cor 13:4), then receive the Spirit.
Prayer: Jesus, without You I can do nothing (Jn 15:5). Come, Holy Spirit!
Promise: "I have given them the glory You gave Me that they may be one, as We are One - I living in them, You living in Me." -Jn 17:22-23
Praise: Sarah has received God's gift of healing and finds that when she prays for people they are sometimes healed immediately.

Pentecost Novena Day 6 - Wednesday
Pray: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of Your love.
V. Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created,
R. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray.
O God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of Your faithful, grant that by that same Holy Spirit, we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

GOD'S ENLARGING WORD
"I commend you now to the Lord, and to that gracious word of His which can enlarge you." -Acts 20:32
As Pentecost approaches, the Lord shines the spotlight ever more brightly on His Word. In the sixth day of the Pentecost novena, we are praying for a great outpouring and reception of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday. One of the first actions the Holy Spirit does is to break open the Word of God, make it come alive (Heb 4:12), and use it to enlarge His people (Acts 20:32).
On the first Christian Pentecost, the Spirit inspired St. Peter to preach from the Psalms (Acts 2:25ff). The Spirit then immediately used the proclaimed Word to bring three-thousand people to faith (Acts 2:41). When the Holy Spirit wields the Word of God (Eph 6:17), great growth and enlarging soon follow.
If we are serious about praying for the Holy Spirit, we need to dive into the Scriptures as never before. Many who receive the Holy Spirit find that one of the first effects is for the Scriptures to suddenly "leap off the page." However, no passages jump off the page at us if we haven't opened our Bibles. Jesus has given us God's Word (Jn 17:14). He also pours out the Spirit on us to make God's Word multiply in us. Let us accordingly do our part by reading our Bibles daily. Abide in God's Word (Jn 8:31), be enlarged (Acts 20:32), and thereby enlarge God's kingdom.
Prayer: Father, may Catholics increasingly read, pray, study, share, teach, and obey Your Word.
Promise: "I consecrate Myself for their sakes now, that they may be consecrated in truth." -Jn 17:19
Praise: St. Isidore, a farmer, began each day with morning Mass. He and his wife are both canonized saints.

"THE SPIRIT AND THE BRIDE" (Rv 22:17)
"The saying in Scripture uttered long ago by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of David was destined to be fulfilled in Judas." -Acts 1:16
While the Church, about to be born at Pentecost, was praying in the upper room (see Acts 1:14), Peter stood up and quoted two obscure sentences from the Psalms (Acts 1:20). The first one, Psalm 69:26, if applied to Judas Iscariot's apostleship, sounded as if no one should take Judas' place, although the quote was probably applied to the field in which Judas died. The second quote, Psalm 109:8, if applied to Judas, seems to call for apostolic succession. The apostles accepted Peter's prophetic interpretation of these two Scripture passages. Thus, we have the first apostolic succession. This is the only way by which we can objectively determine whether a group which calls itself a "church" is truly the Church founded by Jesus. Thus, Peter's primacy, his leadership of the apostles, and apostolic succession were already beginning to be established in the Church in the womb of the upper room before the Church was born at Pentecost.
The Holy Spirit and the Church, especially the hierarchical aspects of the Church, go together. The coming of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the Church were simultaneous. The Spirit and the Bride of Christ, the Church, both say the same thing (see Rv 22:17). The Spirit is Truth (1 Jn 5:6), and the Church is the pillar and bulwark of truth (1 Tm 3:15). If we are in the Spirit, we must be in the Church in a deep way.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, produce in me Your fruit of love (Gal 5:22), especially love for the Church (see Eph 5:25).
Promise: "It was not you who chose Me, it was I Who chose you to go forth and bear fruit. Your fruit must endure." -Jn 15:16
Praise: St. Matthias rejoiced when whipped as punishment for teaching about Jesus (Acts 5:40). He was continually "teaching and proclaiming the good news of Jesus the Messiah" (Acts 5:42).

QUESTION BOX
"There is no need for anyone to ask You questions." -John 16:30
There is no need for us to question God in a prideful, doubting way. Zechariah questioned God's messenger by asking: "How am I to know this?" (Lk 1:18) He was struck dumb for nine months.
However, we do have a need to question God in a humble, loving way. Mary questioned the same archangel as Zechariah did. In all humility, she asked: "How can this be since I do not know man?" (Lk 1:34) The angel did not strike her dumb. He promised that the Holy Spirit would come upon Mary (Lk 1:35). Then Mary conceived Jesus, God, by the power of the Spirit.
During this Pentecost novena, in a spirit of humility, ask God questions. Question even yourself and your motives. Ask others the question: "Did you receive the Holy Spirit?" (Acts 19:2) Questions asked in humility lead to answers - even to the reception of the Holy Spirit in a new Pentecost (see Acts 1:6ff). Jesus promised: "Ask, and you will receive" (Mt 7:7). Ask questions, and you may receive the Holy Spirit. Come, Holy Spirit!
Prayer: Father, may I ask questions, find peace even in suffering, take courage, and overcome the world (Jn 16:33).
Promise: "As Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came down on them and they began to speak in tongues and to utter prophecies. There were in the company about twelve men in all." -Acts 19:6-7
Praise: At a local parish, a large group of Catholics regularly prays to Our Lady of Fatima each Saturday to observe her requests for regular prayer, reparation, and consecration.
