SLEEPING IN THE CLASSROOM

"Peter and those with him had fallen into a deep sleep; but awakening, they saw His glory." -Luke 9:32

Jesus took Peter, James, and John off by themselves, and "went up onto a mountain to pray" (Lk 9:28). "While He was praying, His face changed in appearance and His clothes became dazzlingly white" (Lk 9:29). However, Peter, James, and John had fallen into a deep sleep (Lk 9:32). When they awoke, they were in a fog (Lk 9:34). They heard God tell them to listen to Jesus (Lk 9:35). They saw Jesus transfigured in radiant glory, but they missed the encouraging message that God is all-powerful.
Jesus again took Peter, James, and John off by themselves and went into a garden to pray (Mk 14:32:33). He began to change in appearance once more, suffering distress and sweating blood (Lk 22:44; Mk 14:34). Jesus intended the first prayer class, with its transfigured glory, to serve as an encouragement for this second prayer class, with its suffering and defeat. However, Peter, James, and John forgot the first lesson and fell asleep again (Mt 26:43). This time, they awoke to find Jesus' captors at hand. Though Jesus and the Father had prepared them, they abandoned Jesus and fled (Mk 14:50).
Jesus knows our "spirit is willing but [our] nature is weak" (Mk 14:38). He will keep teaching us until we learn to pay close attention (2 Pt 1:19). "Awake, O sleeper" (Eph 5:14). Fix your eyes on Jesus transfigured (Heb 3:1). "Listen to Him" (Lk 9:35).

Prayer: Jesus, give me "ears open to obedience" (Ps 40:7).

Promise: "We possess the prophetic message as something altogether reliable." -2 Pt 1:19

Praise: Praise Jesus, Whose glory shines upon us all! Alleluia!

I GOT NO COMPLAINTS - One Bread, One Body, 8/5/2013

Monday, August 5, 2013, Dedication of St. Mary Major

Numbers 11:4-15, Psalm 81:12-17, Matthew 14:13-21

I GOT NO COMPLAINTS

"When Moses heard the people, family after family, crying at the entrance of their tents, so that the Lord became very angry, he was grieved." -Numbers 11:10

Through ten awesome plagues, the Lord freed the whole Israelite nation from centuries of slavery. He protected His chosen people by miraculously drowning the Egyptian army in the Red Sea. Then, the Lord worked the miracle of feeding hundreds of thousands of Israelites daily for forty years by giving them manna from heaven.
The people reacted to God's miracles of love and power not in thanksgiving but by complaining about the food. "Who cares about the miraculous liberation of a nation? We're more interested in onions, garlic, juicy melons, and cool cucumbers" (see Nm 11:5).
Moses reacted to the people's selfishly complaining by selfishly complaining. Have you ever complained about others complaints?
There was no room for complaints after what the Lord did for the Israelites. We of the new covenant especially have no reason to complain. The Lord has not freed us from Egypt but from sin, Satan, hell, death, slavery, and self-hatred. Out of love for us, the Lord died to take away our sin. He has given us a new nature in Baptism and has made us His children. We are members of Christ's body and temples of the Holy Spirit. We receive Jesus in Holy Communion. We will live forever in the perfect happiness and love of heaven.
After what the Lord has done for us, we should be ashamed to complain. Rather, we should give Him constant thanks (1 Thes 5:18).

Prayer: Father, may I dedicate myself to a life and afterlife of thanksgiving (Col 3:15).

Promise: "Those who ate were about five thousand, not counting women and children." -Mt 14:21

Praise: Jesus healed Ellen's cancer by removing her tumor when Fr. Angelo laid hands on her in prayer.

PM eNewsletter 18th Sunday in ordinary time

Aug. 4th Eighteenth Sunday in ordinary time

This week, oh! Jesus, Your church celebrates the Feast of the
Transfiguration.

When You showed the apostles what You really looked like.

Help us, Jesus, to realize that we too will see You as the Triune
God someday, when we appear before You for judgement.

Lord, help us now, to live lives of loving service to others, so
that we really won't have any fear of death.

Lord, help us to see You in others, and have them see You in us.

Thank You for Your unending love.

Amen and Amen.

Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday FOOL'S GOLD
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=8/4/2013

"All things are vanity!" -Ecclesiastes 1:2

King Solomon, who is credited with writing the book of Ecclesiastes, was one of the
richest people in history (see 1 Kgs 10:14ff). He had seven hundred wives and three
hundred concubines (1 Kgs 11:3). He could get anything he wanted any time he wanted.
Many people today are trying hard to become more like Solomon. They want to be able to
relax "for years to come," "eat heartily, drink well," and enjoy themselves (Lk 12:19).
Solomon, who ought to know, says they are fools (see Lk 12:20), for "all things are
vanity!" (Eccl 1:2)

"What profit does he show who gains the whole world and destroys himself in the
process?" (Lk 9:25) "You are not to spend what remains of your earthly life on human
desires but on the will of God. Already you have devoted enough time to what the pagans
enjoy" (1 Pt 4:2-3). Therefore, "set your heart on what pertains to higher realms where
Christ is seated at God's right hand. Be intent on things above rather than on things
of earth" (Col 3:1-2).

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to help me get in touch with reality.

Promise: "What you have done is put aside your old self with its past deeds and put
on a new man, one who grows in knowledge as he is formed anew in the image of his
Creator." -Col 3:9-10

Praise: Praise Jesus, Who has freed us to live for the works of God (Eph 2:10). Glory
be to God forever!

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

THE GOSPEL OF LIFE

"THANK THE LORD"

... In the Year of Faith, let us thank the Lord for the gift of life in all its forms,
and at the same time, let us proclaim the Gospel of Life.

"POINTS OF MEDITATION"

... I would like to offer you three simple points of meditation for our faith; first,
the Bible reveals to us the Living God, the God Who is life and the source of life;
second, Jesus Christ bestows life and the Holy Spirit maintains us in life; and third,
following God's way leads to life; whereas following idols leads to death.

WHAT IS YOUR IMAGE OF GOD?

What is the image we have of God? Perhaps he appears to us as a severe judge, as someone
who curtails our freedom and the way we live our lives? But the Scriptures everywhere
tell us that God is the Living God, the one who bestows life and points the way to
fullness of life.

King Solomon, who is credited with writing the book of Ecclesiastes, was one of the richest people in history (see 1 Kgs 10:14ff). POWER HOUSE - One Bread, One Body, 8/3/2013

POWER HOUSE

"This Man is John the Baptizer - it is he in person, raised from the dead; that is why such miraculous powers are at work in Him!" -Matthew 14:2

Herod thought that Jesus was John the Baptizer raised from the dead and that this was why Jesus had such miraculous powers. Although Herod was wrong about Jesus' identity, he was right about resurrection. Jesus was not John risen, but miraculous power is based on resurrection from the dead.
Through baptism, we "have been raised up in company with Christ" (Col 3:1). We have been baptized into Jesus' death and resurrection (Rm 6:5). Therefore, we have awesome power. As Jesus testified, we can even do greater by far than He Himself did (Jn 14:12). Our bodies are temples of Power, because they are temples of the Holy Spirit, Who is Power Itself (Acts 1:8).
Our temples of Power are clothed with power from head to toe (see Lk 24:49). Because we have been baptized into the family of the all-powerful God, we have power to move mountains (Mt 17:20), "cure the sick, raise the dead, heal the leprous, expel demons" (Mt 10:8). We can attack the gates of hell (Mt 16:18), bring down every stronghold opposed to Jesus (2 Cor 10:4), and shoot Satan himself out of the sky like lightning (see Lk 10:18). In Christ, through baptism into His death and resurrection, you are a power house. Act accordingly.

Prayer: Father, may I let You empower me as Mary did.

Promise: "May God bless us, and may all the ends of the earth fear Him!" -Ps 67:8

Praise: God protected the Williams' family from harm by arranging for them to not be at home when a hurricane toppled a tree through the roof of their bedroom. Praise You, Jesus, for Your constant protection!

TOO, TOO MUCH - One Bread, One Body, 8/2/2013

Friday, August 2, 2013, St. Eusebius of Vercelli, St. Peter Julian Eymard

Leviticus 23:1, 4-11, 15-16, 27, 34-37, Psalm 81:3-6, 10-11, Matthew 13:54-58
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/080213.cfm

TOO, TOO MUCH

"They found Him altogether too much for them." -Matthew 13:57

The Lord commands us to tithe and calls us to give alms. However, few Christians tithe, and fewer give alms, although many think they are giving alms when instead they are paying only part of their tithe. For most people, the Lord is too much.
Jesus commands us to pray always and not lose heart (Lk 18:1). Doesn't that seem excessive, that is, too much?
We come to the Lord and ask for healing. However, He decides to lead us to repentance, salvation, freedom, evangelization, and ministry in addition to healing. All we wanted was to feel better, but the Lord has all these other things on His mind.
We're content to belong to our parish and to engage in some religious practices. Yet Jesus doesn't seem as content as we are. He tells us to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mk 12:30), and to sell everything to obtain His kingdom (Mt 13:44-46). Now isn't that going too far and asking too much?

Prayer: Jesus, when I think You are asking too much, may I look at the crucifix.

Promise: "Take up a melody, and sound the timbrel, the pleasant harp and the lyre." -Ps 81:3

Praise: St. Eusebius held to the truth even after being dragged through the streets and imprisoned.

(To improve from the "too much" to the "not doing enough" for the Lord, read the Bible daily. For encouragement, order any or all of these audio or video tapes: "Ignorance of Scripture is Ignorance of Christ", AV 82-1, V-82, "How to Pray the Bible "on audio AV 82-3 or on video V-82, "How to Read the Bible" on audio AV 46-3 or on video V-46, "Principles of Bible Interpretation", audio AV 79-1, video V-79.)

COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

"Whenever the cloud rose from the Dwelling, the Israelites would set out on their journey." -Exodus 40:36

"The Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as one man speaks to another. Moses would then return to the camp" (Ex 33:11) and tell the people the Lord's wishes. The Lord also directed His people with the cloud which settled down over the meeting tent. When the cloud moved, the people moved. This communication system was simple and easy to follow. Nevertheless, it didn't work. The chosen people refused to follow Moses into the promised land because they were afraid (see Nm 14:9-10).
In the new covenant, the Lord communicates not only through people and things outside us, but also from inside us because He lives in us (Jn 6:56; 17:23). Moreover, He not only tells us what to do but also has given us a new nature through Baptism so that we are able to do His will. Because of Jesus, we can communicate deeply and intimately with the Father in the Spirit.
If we have difficulties hearing and therefore loving the Lord, we need only renew our baptismal promises and live fully our Baptism by repenting of our sins, submitting to the authority of the Church, daily hearing and living the Bible, and sharing our faith. Jesus promised: "Whoever is of God hears every word God speaks" (Jn 8:47).

Prayer: Father, may I hear You and love You as never before.

Promise: "My soul yearns and pines for the courts of the Lord. My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God." -Ps 84:3

Praise: St. Alphonsus received a communication from God so stirring that he left his secular life to live solely for his Lord.
