HARD OF HEARING?
"We ourselves heard this said from heaven while we were in His company on the holy mountain." -2 Peter 1:18
The Transfiguration of Jesus was a prelude to an even more important event: the Father's command to listen to Jesus (Mt 17:5). We need the Father's command to listen to Jesus because of our natural aversion to what Jesus is talking about - the cross. We don't want to hear about taking up the cross and dying on it daily (see Lk 9:23). With Peter, we are inclined to say to Jesus: "May You be spared, Master! God forbid that any such thing ever happen to You!" (Mt 16:22) (see Catechism, 554) However, we must resist the temptation to contrive a crossless Christianity. We must listen to Jesus about the cross; for the agony, pain, and weakness of the cross is the power and wisdom of God (1 Cor 1:24) - even the perfection of God's power (2 Cor 12:9).
If we obey the Father's voice and listen to Jesus, we will not only hear Jesus proclaiming the cross but also "speak of nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified" (1 Cor 2:2). Then people will be graced to listen to us. We will even come to the point of never boasting "of anything but the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Gal 6:14). At the foot of the cross, we will say with the Father: "Listen to Jesus."
Prayer: Father, may I hear what I have had the hardest time hearing.
Promise: "His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away, His kingship shall not be destroyed." -Dn 7:14
Praise: Praise Jesus, transfigured, crucified, and glorified! Alleluia!

LOOKING TO OBEY - One Bread, One Body, 8/5/2014

LOOKING TO OBEY
"Incurable is your wound, grievous your bruise; there is none to plead your cause, no remedy for your running sore, no healing for you." -Jeremiah 30:12-13
Jeremiah considered the condition of God's people incurable. However, the Lord revealed that this impossible condition would be reversed. The Lord promised: "From them will resound songs of praise, the laughter of happy men. I will make them not few, but many; they will not be tiny, for I will glorify them" (Jer 30:19).
This miraculous change is done in the same way in which Peter walked on water. Peter was able to walk on water (Mt 14:29) by fixing his eyes on Jesus, the Beginning and the End of our faith (see Heb 12:2). However, Peter was called not just to look at Jesus, but to look at Jesus for the purpose of obeying Him. The psalmist prays: "To You I lift up my eyes Who are enthroned in heaven. Behold, as the eyes of servants are on the hands of their masters, as the eyes of a maid are on the hands of her mistress, so are our eyes on the Lord" (Ps 123:1-2). We fix our eyes on Jesus just as servants look at their masters' hands in anticipation of a command.
After walking on water, Jesus healed all who touched the tassel of His cloak (Mt 14:36). This is like looking at Jesus in order to walk on water. Both looking and touching are acts of obedience. God said: "When you use these tassels, let the sight of them remind you to keep all the commandments of the Lord" (Nm 15:39).
Miraculous changes are done by looking to obey and touching to obey. The most miraculous change of all and the basis for all miraculous changes was done through Jesus "obediently accepting even death, death on a cross!" (Phil 2:8; see also Rm 5:19) Obey the Lord and change the world.
Prayer: Father, may my life be a walk on the waters because I walk in obedience.
Promise: "The nations shall revere Your name, O Lord." -Ps 102:16
Praise: Praise You, Jesus, for giving us Your mother Mary to nourish and guide us (Jn 19:26-27).

FALSE CONFIDENCE - One Bread, One Body, 8/4/2014

FALSE CONFIDENCE
"You have raised false confidence in this people." -Jeremiah 28:15
History is filled with examples of false confidence resulting in disaster. For example, George Washington led his troops in crossing the Delaware River on Christmas to defeat the drunken Hessian troops during the Revolutionary War. Once the battle had begun, the Hessian troops surely wished they had spent their Christmas doing less drinking and celebrating and more time being vigilant and prepared (see Lk 21:34).
"The time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but, following their own desires, will surround themselves with teachers who tickle their ears. They will stop listening to the truth and will wander off to fables" (2 Tm 4:3-4). "Just when people are saying, 'Peace and security,' ruin will fall on them with the suddenness of pains overtaking a woman in labor, and there will be no escape" (1 Thes 5:3).
God has always sent prophets to afflict the comfortable by speaking challenging words to those who place their confidence anywhere but in Him. Is the Lord calling you to go and speak in this way? He wants you to have much more confidence in Him than your hearers have in their false beliefs (see 2 Cor 5:6). The Lord says: "Have no fear before them...But speak My words to them, whether they heed or resist" (Jer 1:8; Ez 2:7).
Prayer: Lord, "let those turn to me who fear You and acknowledge Your decrees" (Ps 119:79). Let me tell them Your truth.
Promise: "Jesus hastened to reassure them: 'Get hold of yourselves! It is I. Do not be afraid!' " -Mt 14:27
Praise: St. John Vianney convicted those comfortable in their sins and reconciled them to God.

This week, oh! Jesus, Your church celebrates the Feast of the
Transfiguration.
When You showed the apostles what You really looked like.
Help us, Jesus, to realize that we too will see You as the Triune
God someday, when we appear before You for judgement.
Lord, help us now, to live lives of loving service to others, so
that we really won't have any fear of death.
Lord, help us to see You in others, and have them see You in us.
Thank You for Your unending love.
Amen and Amen.

Sunday CLOSING THE DEAL

"Give them something to eat yourselves." -Matthew 14:16
Jesus has placed His disciples in a fantastic position. On one side
there is the human race, which continually grows hungry and has a
daily need for food. On the other side is the Lord, Who has a
continual desire to feed, nourish, and even satisfy hungry humanity
(see Ps 81:11, 17; Mt 14:20). God has placed us, as His disciples,
between Him and the rest of mankind, and charges us with feeding
His people (Mt 14:16; Jn 21:15ff). We are God's middlemen, His
ambassadors (2 Cor 5:20), charged with bringing the two parties
together.
This is an ambassador's dream: one party with an unceasing demand,
and the other Party with an unlimited ability and unceasing desire
to supply that demand (see Lk 22:15). In the business world,
candidates would compete for this kind of job opportunity and would
flock en masse to interview for it, even if there were tough
conditions involved. Most salespeople would eagerly tackle this
challenge, aggressively and creatively finding ways to get the
parties together. In the religious world, we don't seem to respond
as eagerly at this prospect of being ambassadors.
Let's ask the Lord to give us His heart, a heart moved with
compassion for all people (Mt 14:14). He constantly desires to fill
the mouths of hungry humanity with His Word and Eucharist (Ps 81:11),
whether or not they appreciate Him. He will give us His heart for
His people in such a way that we will find rest (Mt 11:29) rather
than distress (Nm 11:15) in feeding them. "Go out now and take your
place" (Acts 5:20) as God's ambassadors.
Prayer: Sacred Heart of Jesus, make my heart like unto Thine. Give
me Your desire to feed Your loved ones (Jn 21:15).
Promise: "All those present ate their fill." -Mt 14:20
Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who is the Word-Made-Flesh, now and
forever! (Jn 1:14)

Please pray for myfamily and me for healing and forgiveness. There
is much division because of political and religious differences.
Jesus told us families would be divided but it is so painful. I don't
know how to respond to the unbelievers. I feel so guilty about the
anger I feel toward them. My mother was so strong in her faith and
was such a good example and don't understand how they fall away and
can believe in abortion and not believe in God. My own son I pray
for that his wife and he may come back to their Christian faith. My
heart is heavy. Please bring healing to this family and to all
unbelievers. Mary pray with me and for me along with the prayers in

guidance as I look for suitable employment. I need Your wisdom to
guide my footsteps along the right path, and to lead me to find the
proper things to say and do in this quest. I wish to use the gifts
and talents You have given me, but I need the opportunity to do so
with gainful employment. Do not abandon me, Dear Father, in this
search, but rather grant me this favor I seek so that I may return
to You with praise and thanksgiving for Your gracious assistance.

those who take the time to call out to You. Heal them all of
physical or mental pain. For all, I pray they will find jobs, have
a home, have healthcare, a source to get to and from work. Heal the
world where there has been no rain, calm the winds and put an end
to war. May we always look after and protect Israel. I pray we have
love for all mankind and that we pray for all, not just ourselves.
For those children who are desperate to get inside the southern
borders of the US, please help them father.To those who would argue
that point, read Matthew 25:40. May you all find peace in Christ.

This week, oh! Jesus, Your church celebrates the Feast of the
Transfiguration.
When You showed the apostles what You really looked like.
Help us, Jesus, to realize that we too will see You as the Triune
God someday, when we appear before You for judgement.
Lord, help us now, to live lives of loving service to others, so
that we really won't have any fear of death.
Lord, help us to see You in others, and have them see You in us.

Sunday CLOSING THE DEAL

"Give them something to eat yourselves." -Matthew 14:16
Jesus has placed His disciples in a fantastic position. On one side
there is the human race, which continually grows hungry and has a
daily need for food. On the other side is the Lord, Who has a
continual desire to feed, nourish, and even satisfy hungry humanity
(see Ps 81:11, 17; Mt 14:20). God has placed us, as His disciples,
between Him and the rest of mankind, and charges us with feeding
His people (Mt 14:16; Jn 21:15ff). We are God's middlemen, His
ambassadors (2 Cor 5:20), charged with bringing the two parties
together.
This is an ambassador's dream: one party with an unceasing demand,
and the other Party with an unlimited ability and unceasing desire
to supply that demand (see Lk 22:15). In the business world,
candidates would compete for this kind of job opportunity and would
flock en masse to interview for it, even if there were tough
conditions involved. Most salespeople would eagerly tackle this
challenge, aggressively and creatively finding ways to get the
parties together. In the religious world, we don't seem to respond
as eagerly at this prospect of being ambassadors.
Let's ask the Lord to give us His heart, a heart moved with
compassion for all people (Mt 14:14). He constantly desires to fill
the mouths of hungry humanity with His Word and Eucharist (Ps 81:11),
whether or not they appreciate Him. He will give us His heart for
His people in such a way that we will find rest (Mt 11:29) rather
than distress (Nm 11:15) in feeding them. "Go out now and take your
place" (Acts 5:20) as God's ambassadors.
Prayer: Sacred Heart of Jesus, make my heart like unto Thine. Give
me Your desire to feed Your loved ones (Jn 21:15).
Promise: "All those present ate their fill." -Mt 14:20
Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who is the Word-Made-Flesh, now and
forever! (Jn 1:14)

Please pray for myfamily and me for healing and forgiveness. There
is much division because of political and religious differences.
Jesus told us families would be divided but it is so painful. I don't
know how to respond to the unbelievers. I feel so guilty about the
anger I feel toward them. My mother was so strong in her faith and
was such a good example and don't understand how they fall away and
can believe in abortion and not believe in God. My own son I pray
for that his wife and he may come back to their Christian faith. My
heart is heavy. Please bring healing to this family and to all
unbelievers. Mary pray with me and for me along with the prayers in

God, our Father, I turn to You seeking Your divine help and
guidance as I look for suitable employment. I need Your wisdom to
guide my footsteps along the right path, and to lead me to find the
proper things to say and do in this quest. I wish to use the gifts
and talents You have given me, but I need the opportunity to do so
with gainful employment. Do not abandon me, Dear Father, in this
search, but rather grant me this favor I seek so that I may return
to You with praise and thanksgiving for Your gracious assistance.

those who take the time to call out to You. Heal them all of
physical or mental pain. For all, I pray they will find jobs, have
a home, have healthcare, a source to get to and from work. Heal the
world where there has been no rain, calm the winds and put an end
to war. May we always look after and protect Israel. I pray we have
love for all mankind and that we pray for all, not just ourselves.
For those children who are desperate to get inside the southern
borders of the US, please help them father.To those who would argue
that point, read Matthew 25:40. May you all find peace in Christ.

The Bible Telephone Line (BTL) has been in operation for 19 years. Begun by Fr. Al

SIN-SICK? - One Bread, One Body, 8/2/2014

SIN-SICK?
"Now, therefore, reform your ways and your deeds; listen to the voice of the Lord your God, so that the Lord will repent of the evil with which He threatens you." -Jeremiah 26:13
When Herod heard of Jesus, he didn't think of Jesus. Instead, Herod thought of John the Baptizer (Mt 14:2). Herod may have been eaten up with guilt for beheading John. This hell of guilt was due to murder, which was due to pride and lust (see Mt 14:3ff). Herod's lust was bred in unforgiveness or some other root sin.
When we sin, we "get on a roll" of slavery, self-deception, self-hatred, spiritual blindness, spiritual anorexia, and spiritual paralysis. Ultimately, "the wages of sin is death" (Rm 6:23). If we board the train of sin, we will do things that we consider "sick," perverted, and perverting. We will be taken to places we've never wanted to go. Ultimately, we can go to hell.
Therefore, love God and hate sin (see Sir 17:21). Resist temptations to sin - even to the point of shedding your blood (Heb 12:4). If you have sinned, repent immediately. Go to Confession. Consider this sacrament a great gift to be received at least monthly. Be a minister of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18): love sinners; hate sin; convict others of sin (see Jn 16:8); call them to repentance. Above all, thank Jesus always and forever for being the slain Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world (Jn 1:29).
Prayer: Jesus, I accept You as the Offering for my sins and for the sins of the whole world (1 Jn 2:2).
Promise: "It was the Lord Who sent me to prophesy." -Jer 26:12
Praise: Even in the sufferings of being exiled for his faith, St. Eusebius rejoiced in the Lord and encouraged his fellow believers, writing: "Dearly beloved, I rejoice in your faith, in the salvation that comes from faith, in your good works."

GIVE ME THE WORKS
"He did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith." -Matthew 13:58
If we are seeing only occasional miracles in our lives, we should repent of our lack of faith. If we are seeing only a few people converted every few weeks (see Acts 17:34), we must repent because the Lord wants to give us a great harvest of conversions as He adds to our number daily (Acts 2:47). If we never go beyond moving mountains with our little faith (Mt 17:20), we should repent of not letting the seed of faith grow. In our watered-down, lukewarm Christianity, those things seen in the Bible as failures can appear to us to be successes. However, we must not settle for anything less than the total fulfillment of God's promises and the abundant life (Jn 10:10).
The Lord has promised us immeasurably more than we can ever ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20). Therefore, we must not expect anything less. The Lord has promised us: "Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love Him" (1 Cor 2:9). If we love Him, we must expect and receive the unseeable, unhearable, and the unthinkable. "Is it possible that He Who did not spare His own Son but handed Him over for the sake of us all will not grant us all things besides?" (Rm 8:32)
Prayer: Father, may I let You do everything You want.
Promise: "I pray to You, O Lord, for the time of Your favor, O God! In Your great kindness answer me with Your constant help." -Ps 69:14
Praise: As a youngster, St. Alphonsus and his father went on retreats together. This seed bore great fruit as Alphonsus later became a bishop and a Doctor of the Church.
