THE ONE-TWO PUNCH
"The Lord said to Satan, 'Behold, all that he has is in your power.' " -Job 1:12
Satan is the father of lies (Jn 8:44). He is the expert in tempting us. For example, he tried to get Job to say something "disrespectful of God" (Jb 1:22) and to curse God (Jb 2:9). Job, however, did not fall for Satan's series of temptations. First, Satan had the Sabeans steal Job's oxen and asses (Jb 1:14-15). In our economy, this would have been a theft of several thousand dollars worth of property. Next, lightning struck and destroyed more of Job's property, killing some of his employees (Jb 1:16). If Job hadn't forgiven the Sabeans and placed the first catastrophe in God's hands, he might have blamed God for the second catastrophe. This would have turned his heart from God and planted a seed which would have grown into a sin of disrespect and cursing against God.
After this one-two punch failed, Satan tried it again on Job, but with greater intensity. The Chaldeans robbed Job of camels which were probably worth much more than Job's oxen and asses (Jb 1:17). These Chaldeans also murdered several of Job's employees (Jb 1:17). If Job had hated these Chaldeans for their crimes, he probably would have sinned and been knocked out when he heard the devastating news that all ten of his children had been killed in an accident (Jb 1:18-19). Doesn't bad news often come in pairs or bunches? Don't we often get the worst news when we already feel bad? That's why we must turn to God, forgive, and shake off the first punch before the second one hits.
Prayer: Father, give me wisdom and love so that I will not be outwitted by the evil one (see 2 Cor 2:11).
Promise: "Whoever welcomes this little child on My account welcomes Me, and whoever welcomes Me welcomes Him Who sent Me; for the least one among you is the greatest." -Lk 9:48
Praise: Sts. Cosmas & Damian used their giftedness in medicine to minister to God's sick and wounded free of charge.

Sunday THE GULF WAR

"Between you and us there is fixed a great abyss, so that those who might wish to cross from
here to you cannot do so, nor can anyone cross from your side to us." -Luke 16:26
The rich man, traditionally known as Dives, spent eternity staring across a great chasm
separating himself from the Lord (Lk 16:26). How ironic! Dives spent his lifetime constructing
this chasm (or gulf) to isolate himself from the poor. Now this gulf, built day by day during
his life, could not be undone in eternity.
In the USA, many gulfs have been built to isolate the not-so-poor from the poor. We have
suburbs, which the poor can't reach because of distance and low income. We have expensive
colleges and professional training, which often serve to exclude those without sufficient
income. The high cost of medical insurance often excludes the poor from the treatment they need.
This is not meant so much to criticize those who enjoy these things as it is to make the point
that those who have a gulf between themselves and the poor must work harder than ever to bridge
that gulf. Charity obliges those with a sufficiency to share with those without
(see 2 Cor 8:14). "Woe to the complacent" who do not reach out to the Lazaruses in their midst
(Am 6:1).
King Jesus will judge us on our outreach to the poor (see Mt 25:35ff). All Christians are to "be
mindful of the poor" (Gal 2:10) and even have "a preferential love" for the poor
(Catechism, 2448). Reach out to the poor. Bridge the gulf now, before you have to stare across
it forever.
Prayer: Jesus, You made Yourself poor for My sake (2 Cor 8:9). Give me Your heart, mind, love,
and ministry to the poor.
Promise: "Happy he [...who] secures justice for the oppressed, [and] gives food to the hungry."
-Ps 146:5, 7
Praise: Praise Jesus, Who is meek and humble of heart, yet Lord of the universe and Ruler of all
creation. Alleluia!

I have been moving backwards from my faith for years. It started slowly and has been steadily
getting faster paced. Recently we met a man who is deeply spiritual and Catholic. He happens to
work with a priest who is also a exorcist. I cannot say that I need an exorcism-who can?! He made
a statement to us that made us think...that he felt a strong positive spiritual presence among us.
My prayer is to begin moving forward toward Jesus again and to stop moving backward toward evil.

The Bible Telephone Line (BTL) has been in operation for 24 years. Begun by Fr. Al in 1991, it now
continues with one deacon of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and two lay teachers trained by

THE GULF WAR
"Between you and us there is fixed a great abyss, so that those who might wish to cross from here to you cannot do so, nor can anyone cross from your side to us." -Luke 16:26
The rich man, traditionally known as Dives, spent eternity staring across a great chasm separating himself from the Lord (Lk 16:26). How ironic! Dives spent his lifetime constructing this chasm (or gulf) to isolate himself from the poor. Now this gulf, built day by day during his life, could not be undone in eternity.
In the USA, many gulfs have been built to isolate the not-so-poor from the poor. We have suburbs, which the poor can't reach because of distance and low income. We have expensive colleges and professional training, which often serve to exclude those without sufficient income. The high cost of medical insurance often excludes the poor from the treatment they need.
This is not meant so much to criticize those who enjoy these things as it is to make the point that those who have a gulf between themselves and the poor must work harder than ever to bridge that gulf. Charity obliges those with a sufficiency to share with those without (see 2 Cor 8:14). "Woe to the complacent" who do not reach out to the Lazaruses in their midst (Am 6:1).
King Jesus will judge us on our outreach to the poor (see Mt 25:35ff). All Christians are to "be mindful of the poor" (Gal 2:10) and even have "a preferential love" for the poor (Catechism, 2448). Reach out to the poor. Bridge the gulf now, before you have to stare across it forever.
Prayer: Jesus, You made Yourself poor for My sake (2 Cor 8:9). Give me Your heart, mind, love, and ministry to the poor.
Promise: "Happy he [...who] secures justice for the oppressed, [and] gives food to the hungry." -Ps 146:5, 7
Praise: Praise Jesus, Who is meek and humble of heart, yet Lord of the universe and Ruler of all creation. Alleluia!

DESTROYING DEATH (1 Cor 15:26)
"You make an end of them in their sleep." -Psalm 90:5
The author of Ecclesiastes, living centuries before the revelation of Jesus, the Resurrection and the Life (Jn 11:25), is naturally pessimistic about life. For example, he goes on and on about growing old. Then he speaks of death in six ways. Death is like going home, a snapped cord, a broken bowl, a shattered pitcher, a pulley fallen into a well, and dust returning to earth (Eccl 12:5-7). It isn't enough for him to say that we will die. He seems obligated to belabor the point.
Death, for the author of Ecclesiastes, almost ruins life. Death has a deadly sting; it is victorious over life (cf 1 Cor 15:55). Because of the overshadowing influence of death, we are tempted to trivialize life by eating and drinking, for tomorrow we die (1 Cor 15:32; Wis 2:5-6ff). Living for pleasure makes us slaves - slaves of sin through fear of death our whole lives long (Heb 2:15). Because of death, we are tempted to give "allegiance to the present age and to the prince of the air, that spirit who is even now at work among the rebellious. All of us were once of their company; we lived at the level of the flesh, following every whim and fancy, and so by nature deserved God's wrath like the rest" (Eph 2:2-3). Death can turn our lives into living deaths (see 1 Jn 3:14).
The only way to de-fang death is to believe in and live totally for Jesus, "the Resurrection and the Life" (Jn 11:25). Jesus alone holds "the keys of death and the nether world" (Rv 1:18). In Jesus, "death is swallowed up in victory" (1 Cor 15:54). Praise Jesus forever!
Prayer: Father, may my dying day be the happiest day of my life.
Promise: "Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart." -Ps 90:12
Praise: "Thanks be to God Who has given us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Cor 15:57).

CROWDED CONDITIONS
Jesus "put the question to them, 'Who do the crowds say that I am?' " -Luke 9:18
Before Jesus asked His disciples: "Who do you say that I am?" (Lk 9:20), He asked: "Who do the crowds say that I am?" (Lk 9:18) Jesus did this to show we must separate ourselves from the crowd if we are to truly acknowledge Him as the Messiah, Lord, and God (see Lk 9:20).
Crowd-pleasers aren't God-pleasers. Jesus is not popular; He is a "sign of contradiction" (Lk 2:34 our transl.). The crowd took part in crucifying Jesus, and it hasn't changed. Therefore, we are enemies of Christ and His cross if we are a crowd-pleaser, set on the things of the world, those things the crowd has always run after (Phil 3:18-19; see also Jas 4:4).
When we step out of line, the crowd sees this as our judgment against it (Wis 2:12). This makes us unpopular, then rejected, and finally hated and persecuted (see Jn 15:19). This helps us understand Jesus' words to Peter after his profession of faith in Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus said: "The Son of Man...must first endure many sufferings, be rejected by the elders, the high priests and the scribes, and be put to death, and then be raised up on the third day" (Lk 9:22). Believing in Jesus means not being part of the crowd, which means suffering as Jesus suffered.
Don't get crowded out of life in Christ. It's better to be persecuted by the crowd than to be persecuting in the crowd. Follow Jesus; leave the crowd behind.
Prayer: Father, may I never cry out "Crucify Him, crucify Him," no matter how many people are yelling it (see Mt 27:22-23).
Promise: "Blessed be the Lord, my Rock, Who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war; my Refuge and my Fortress, my Stronghold, my Deliverer, my Shield, in Whom I trust." -Ps 144:1-2
Praise: St. Pio ministered to the crowds by often hearing confessions for 10-12 hours each day. He said, "Remember that one does not win the battle without prayer. The choice is yours."

THE MISERY OF MONEY, POWER, AND SEX
"Vanity of vanities!" -Ecclesiastes 1:2
The book of Ecclesiastes is traditionally attributed to Solomon because its author, Qoheleth, is identified as David's son (Eccl 1:1). This association makes the message of Ecclesiastes more poignant. Qoheleth, or possibly Solomon, announced that everything is vanity, work and money are useless (Eccl 1:3), "there is nothing man can say" (Eccl 1:8), and all our entertainments are empty (Eccl 1:8).
This is quite a statement for anyone to make, but it's even more significant coming from the mouth of the wisest, richest man in the world. Most people think that someone with 700 wives and 300 concubines would have enough excitement to make life at least palatable (see 1 Kgs 11:3). Yet the one who had it all admitted he had nothing: vanity.
Is there any hope? Our hope is in Jesus alone. "We lived at the level of the flesh, following every whim and fancy, and so by nature deserved God's wrath like the rest. But God is rich in mercy; because of His great love for us He brought us to life with Christ" (Eph 2:3-5). "There is no condemnation now for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Rm 8:1). " 'Life' means Christ" (Phil 1:21).
Prayer: Father, "teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart" (Ps 90:12).
Promise: "Return, O Lord! How long? Have pity on your servants!" -Ps 90:13
Praise: Finding no rest in TV or the Internet, Laura spent the day with the Lord and found refreshment.

Qoheleth, or possibly Solomon, announced that everything is vanity, work and money are useless (Eccl 1:3), "there is nothing man can say" (Eccl 1:8), and all our entertainments are empty (Eccl 1:8).
This is quite a statement for anyone to make, but it's even more significant coming from the mouth of the wisest, richest man in the world. Most people think that someone with 700 wives and 300 concubines would have enough excitement to make life at least palatable (see 1 Kgs 11:3). Yet the one who had it all admitted he had nothing: vanity.
Is there any hope? Our hope is in Jesus alone. "We lived at the level of the flesh, following every whim and fancy, and so by nature deserved God's wrath like the rest. But God is rich in mercy; because of His great love for us He brought us to life with Christ" (Eph 2:3-5). "There is no condemnation now for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Rm 8:1). " 'Life' means Christ" (Phil 1:21).
Prayer: Father, "teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart" (Ps 90:12).
Promise: "Return, O Lord! How long? Have pity on your servants!" -Ps 90:13
Praise: Finding no rest in TV or the Internet, Laura spent the day with the Lord and found refreshment.

A TRAITOR CONVERTS!
"Jesus saw a man named Matthew at his post where taxes were collected." -Matthew 9:9
Matthew was a tax collector. To a Jew, this was one of the most despicable jobs possible (see Mt 18:17). Tax collectors usually perpetrated violence and injustice against the poor. Worse than that, however, they sold out to the enemy, the Romans. Moreover, their association with the Romans made them unclean. Thus, tax collectors gave up their participation in the Jewish community and its worship.
Because of all this, a good Jew would not greet or associate with a tax collector. To eat with a tax collector and call him to become a disciple would be almost blasphemous to a good Jew. Therefore, Jesus' calling of Matthew to become a disciple was either an astounding revelation of God's grace or nothing less than an abomination before God.
Matthew's calling and conversion is a radical statement that:
* God can convert the hardest heart (see 1 Tm 1:15-16).
* "Nothing is impossible with God" (Lk 1:37).
* "Mercy triumphs over judgment" (Jas 2:13).
* Grace surpasses sin (Rm 5:20).
* God chooses the despised (1 Cor 1:28).
* Where there's life, there's hope.
Rejoice, for today is the feast of St. Matthew, a day of mercy and hope.
Prayer: Father, fill me with hope because of Matthew's conversion.
Promise: "I plead with you, then, as a prisoner for the Lord, to live a life worthy of the calling you have received." -Eph 4:1
Praise: Once St. Matthew was disdained and excluded for his tax collecting, but today he is acclaimed and honored for his soul collecting.
