DO NOTHING, RETAIN NOTHING
"The result is that the last state of the man is worse than the first." -Luke 11:26
The man in today's parable was delivered from evil spirits, but then did nothing more. He was a spiritual sitting duck for Satan, and wound up in worse shape than he was before he was delivered (Lk 11:26). He was like a gardener who pulls up all the weeds from his garden, but then doesn't plant any crops. Naturally, the weeds will grow right back.
Jesus is teaching us that it's good to clean house spiritually, but it's critical to press forward and grow in our faith. We can't be idle in the spiritual realm, or we'll be in worse shape than ever. A soldier on the front lines of the battlefield knows he cannot take a month off to take it easy. If he does, the enemy will soon realize he has no resistance. Soon the soldier will be overrun without mercy by the enemy (see Lk 11:22). This is why Jesus, referring to spiritual warfare, says: "He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters" (Lk 11:23).
Repent! Let Jesus clean your soul. Then fight the good fight of faith by growing "in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (2 Pt 3:18; 2 Tm 4:7). Instead of being content with empty, let Jesus give you life to the full (Jn 10:10). Fill your mind with God's Word; fill your mouth with the Eucharist, the Bread of Life (Jn 6:35). Then fill the world with your godly teaching (Acts 5:28) and your praise of God.
Prayer: Jesus, even a child knows that a car gets nowhere if the gas tank is empty. May I never be content with emptiness but always seek to "attain to the fullness" You have for me (Eph 3:19).
Promise: "Christ has delivered us from the power of the law's curse by Himself becoming a curse for us." -Gal 3:13
Praise: Both rosaries and missiles were aimed at the former Soviet Union. By the grace of God, only the rosaries were sent. Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us.

"How could you be so stupid?" -Galatians 3:3
"Hey, Galatians," St. Paul shouts, "wake up! You heard me preach that Jesus saved you by His death and Resurrection. You accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior, and received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Then, after I left town, you listened to false preachers, set Jesus aside, and tried to get right with God on your own. How could you be so stupid?" (see Gal 3:1-5)
No doubt the Galatians were stunned by Paul's charges. The fact that they preserved Paul's letter shows that they did wake up and repent of giving Jesus less than first place. They set aside their erroneous beliefs instead of setting aside Jesus. They renewed their belief that they were justified with God by faith in Jesus and nothing else (Gal 2:16).
Jesus is the only name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). "There is no salvation in anyone else" (Acts 4:12). He is the "Way" to the Father; "no one comes to the Father but through" Jesus (Jn 14:6). Once we know this truth and then relegate Jesus to a second-class position in our lives, we're worse off than before we ever accepted Jesus (2 Pt 2:20-21; Mt 12:43-45). We think we're relying on Jesus, but in reality we've made Him just another item in our religious collection. We've traded eternal life for a short-lived distraction.
Give Jesus first place. Accept Him as Lord. Then keep Him as Lord.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, by my standards I think I'm awake, but by Your standards I may be sleeping. Give me Your urgency and Your wisdom. Come, Holy Spirit!
Promise: "Ask and you shall receive; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you." -Lk 11:9

PRAYER LINES
"Lord, teach us to pray." -Luke 11:1
The Lord, Who is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16), commands us to love Him with all our hearts (Lk 10:27). However, we will do this only if we love our neighbors as ourselves (Lk 10:27). Love is not a matter of mere feelings and words. We must "love in deed and in truth and not merely talk about it" (1 Jn 3:18). We must be like the Good Samaritan and give hands-on, sacrificial service to those in need, even if they are enemies (Lk 10:33ff). We must be like Martha working hard to offer hospitality to Jesus (Lk 10:38ff) and the least of our brothers and sisters (Mt 25:40).
However, before, during, and after our work, we must be like Mary of Bethany and sit at the feet of Jesus to listen to His words (Lk 10:39). We need Jesus to teach us to pray (Lk 11:1), especially to pray first, to pray before work. Otherwise, our actions will speak no louder than our words, and our love will not be authentic. Learn to pray to work in love.
Prayer: Father, as I pray the rosary, purify my motives for working.
Promise: "The only stipulation was that we should be mindful of the poor - the one thing that I was making every effort to do." -Gal 2:10
Praise: George started a Bible study during lunch break at work.

THE SEED OF CONVERSION - One Bread, One Body, 10/4/2016

THE SEED OF CONVERSION
"I went to extremes in persecuting the Church of God and tried to destroy it." -Galatians 1:13
At the time this teaching is written, there are terrorist groups that are persecuting Christians in certain Middle East nations "to extremes." Christians are being driven out of entire regions. They are being beheaded. It seems that the witness to Jesus in these regions is lost forever, and that the witness of these Christians was "in vain" (Is 49:4).
Yet the truth is that "the blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians" (Catechism, 852, Tertullian). St. Paul was present at the martyrdom of St. Stephen and approved his execution (Acts 8:1). Nevertheless, Stephen's shed blood, witness to Jesus, and words of forgiveness undoubtedly made a profound and mysterious impact on St. Paul. He eventually converted to Christianity. Countless people in the very regions in which Paul tried to blot out Christianity "heard that 'he who was formerly persecuting us is now preaching the faith he tried to destroy' and they gave glory to God" (Gal 1:23-24).
Can you imagine the terrorists who beheaded Christians converting to Jesus and becoming worldwide missionaries for Christ? That is no less probable than the conversion of St. Paul. "Nothing is impossible with God" (Lk 1:37). Such dramatic conversions have occurred throughout Church history. One of the Twelve apostles, St. Simon, was a Zealot and could possibly have been involved in terrorist activities before he was called by Jesus (see Mk 3:18). Therefore, "do not let them intimidate you" (Mt 10:26). Witness to Jesus with your life.
Prayer: Father, give me unshakable faith and unswerving confidence in You.
Promise: "Truly You have formed my inmost being; You knit me in my mother's womb." -Ps 139:13
Praise: St. Francis witnessed to the Muslims about Jesus.

IT DOESN'T ADD UP
"What must I do to inherit everlasting life?" -Luke 10:25
St. Paul founded the churches of Galatia on his missionary journeys. He preached that people were set right with God not by any efforts or actions of their own, but by having faith in Jesus Christ (Gal 2:16; 3:22, 26). Eventually, Paul moved on to other cities to preach the gospel.
A few years later, traveling evangelists visited Galatia. These men taught that more was required to be justified with God. They accepted that faith in Jesus was necessary, but then taught that people needed to go beyond "just faith." They probably accused Paul of being soft on the Gentile converts of Galatia, that he watered down the gospel by making it too easy. These men demanded the Galatians add circumcision and dietary restrictions to faith in Jesus. This message probably sounded challenging to the Galatians, and so they went over to a gospel other than that taught to them by Paul (Gal 1:6).
If we depend on anything besides what Jesus did for us in His death and Resurrection, then we "treat God's gracious gift" of salvation by faith in Jesus "as pointless." We act as if "Christ died to no purpose!" (Gal 2:21) Paul said this: "Pay close attention to me, Paul, when I tell you that if you have yourselves circumcised, Christ will be of no use to you!" (Gal 5:2)
For the next ten days, the Church proclaims to us the letter to the Galatians. Read Galatians as if for the first time. Examine anew the basis of your faith. Is there any way in which you are telling Jesus that His death and Resurrection were inadequate for you? Are you adding anything to Jesus? Subtract the additions. Simply accept Jesus as Lord, Savior, and God by faith.
Prayer: Jesus, may I never consider You to be a puny God.
Promise: "He has sent deliverance to His people; He has ratified His covenant forever." -Ps 111:9
Praise: Paul had made an exception for himself when reading Jesus' "hard teachings." He repented and followed Jesus in obedience.

For the next ten days, the Church proclaims to us the letter to the Galatians. Read Galatians as if for the first time. Examine anew the basis of your faith. Is there any way in which you are telling Jesus that His death and Resurrection were inadequate for you? Are you adding anything to Jesus? Subtract the additions. Simply accept Jesus as Lord, Savior, and God by faith.
Prayer: Jesus, may I never consider You to be a puny God.
Promise: "He has sent deliverance to His people; He has ratified His covenant forever." -Ps 111:9
Praise: Paul had made an exception for himself when reading Jesus' "hard teachings." He repented and followed Jesus in obedience.

This week, oh! Jesus, Your church celebrates "Our Lady of the Rosary".
What a gift You and mom have given us through the rosary.
We can intercede, we can praise, and we can meditate on Your life and on moms.
We need to constantly give You praise, honor and glory, for Your love is an unconditional
love that constantly draws us to relationship with You.
Let us see that by meditating on the mysteries, we can draw closer to You and so walk with
You toward heaven.
Thank You for the gift.
Amen and Amen.
Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

Sunday FAITH, NOT PESSIMISM

"Increase our faith." -Luke 17:5
When Habakkuk prayed, he cried out, "Violence!" (Hab 1:2) He described his situation as
"ruin," "misery," "destruction," "strife," and "clamorous discord" (Hab 1:3). He begged
God to intervene (Hab 1:2), but God didn't seem to do anything.
We live in times which fit Habakkuk's description. We live in the most violent and
murderous of times for several reasons. One major reason is the mass murders occurring
through abortions. We tend to feel depressed and hopeless. However, the Lord calls this a
"rash" response to the violence and evil in our society (see Hab 2:4). Rather, our response
should be one of faith (Hab 2:4). If we have faith the size of a mustard seed, we can uproot
the violence and death entrenched in our society (Lk 17:6).
Pope St. John Paul II taught: "If we look at today's world, we are struck by many negative
factors that can lead to pessimism. But this feeling is unjustified: we have faith in God our
Father and Lord, in His goodness and mercy" (Mission of the Redeemer, 86). Therefore, despite
violence and sin, don't be pessimistic, but have even greater faith. Walk by faith, not sight
(2 Cor 5:7).
Prayer: Father, may my faith become stronger, especially when conditions become worse.
Promise: "I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God bestowed when my hands were laid on
you. The Spirit God has given us is no cowardly spirit, but rather One that makes us strong,
loving, and wise." -2 Tm 1:6-7
Praise: Alleluia! "Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death,
where is your sting?" (1 Cor 15:54-55) Jesus is risen! Alleluia!

Divine Mercy Incarnate Jesus, I want to thank you for the glimpses of hope and joy that you
have gifted to me in Your gentle, merciful love. These moments with You are everything that
keeps me hoping and loving. I prostrate humbly at Your feel in overwhelming gratitude for these
glimpses. I also want to thank you for the deliverance prayer that You guided me in finding and
the healing and tears that flowed from my heart into Yours. I realize now that the many perils
that I have ensnared myself into are as a result of past traumas and false guilt that i tend to
internalize in trying to inappropriately help or protect others at the cost of my health,
well-being, and other's journey to You. Help me not to sin in this area, that is, sins against
myself. Help me to be strong and not curl under the flood of false shame and guilt. Deliver me
from the core lies and memories and immerse my little wounds into Your perfect wounds on Your
beautiful cross.

The Bible Telephone Line (BTL) has been in operation for 24 years. Begun by Fr. Al in 1991, it now
continues with one deacon of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and two lay teachers trained by

FAITH, NOT PESSIMISM
"Increase our faith." -Luke 17:5
When Habakkuk prayed, he cried out, "Violence!" (Hab 1:2) He described his situation as "ruin," "misery," "destruction," "strife," and "clamorous discord" (Hab 1:3). He begged God to intervene (Hab 1:2), but God didn't seem to do anything.
We live in times which fit Habakkuk's description. We live in the most violent and murderous of times for several reasons. One major reason is the mass murders occurring through abortions. We tend to feel depressed and hopeless. However, the Lord calls this a "rash" response to the violence and evil in our society (see Hab 2:4). Rather, our response should be one of faith (Hab 2:4). If we have faith the size of a mustard seed, we can uproot the violence and death entrenched in our society (Lk 17:6).
Pope St. John Paul II taught: "If we look at today's world, we are struck by many negative factors that can lead to pessimism. But this feeling is unjustified: we have faith in God our Father and Lord, in His goodness and mercy" (Mission of the Redeemer, 86). Therefore, despite violence and sin, don't be pessimistic, but have even greater faith. Walk by faith, not sight (2 Cor 5:7).
