VOCATION SHORTAGE
"Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church. He gave Himself up for her." -Ephesians 5:25
Much attention and prayer is devoted to the priest shortage in the Church. The Church in her wisdom has resisted watering down the requirements for the priesthood. A vocation crisis also exists in Christian marriage. In the USA, the very definition of marriage as the union between one man and one woman (Catechism, 1660) is under attack. Half of Catholic marriages end in divorce, while many couples who have not divorced are miserable.
A vocation is a supernatural calling, not a natural one. We cannot live our God-given vocation by lowering God's standards. Rather than making marriage "easier" by requiring less and operating in the natural, we must live marriage in the supernatural by a life in the Spirit, and daily seeking and receiving the grace of holy matrimony available in the Spirit.
Minimizing marriage by cutting back, contracepting, or taking shortcuts simply is another way of quenching the Spirit (Eph 4:30). This is quenching love. This is not giving all. When we don't give all, we don't get all. Instead of making marriage easier, we make it harder because we block the Spirit of life, and move toward death rather than new life.
Give all to your vocation. Holy Catholic marriages have great power to break the vocations crisis by being the seedground of holy and consecrated vocations (see Gal 6:7-8). Just as good priests attract future priests to the priesthood, good marriages attract other good marriages and foster holy vocations.
Prayer: Father, may I throw myself into my vocation and abandon my life into Your hands.
Promise: "Happy are you who fear the Lord, who walk in His ways!" -Ps 128:1
Praise: Robert and Sarah got back together when they got God back into their marriage.

THE SLIDE RULES?
"Make no mistake about this: no fornicator, no unclean or lustful person - in effect an idolater - has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God." -Ephesians 5:5
Years ago before there were electronic calculators, there were slide rules by which certain types of computations could be easily made. Today, possibly more than ever, we have a different kind of slide rule. Many people have let rules, laws, standards, convictions, and commandments slide. For example, Jesus told us to gouge out our eyes if we were tempted to look lustfully (Mt 5:28-29). The Lord made clear that "lewd conduct or promiscuousness or lust of any sort" should be not mentioned (Eph 5:3). "Nor should there be any obscene, silly, or suggestive talk" (Eph 5:4).
Many people are slipping and sliding regarding these rules and commands from Jesus. Many in our culture used to think that lust was wrong. Then lust without fornication became acceptable to many. Next, fornication without adultery was OK in the sliding scale of values. Then sexual promiscuity with contraception and without pregnancy and abortion was OK. As sexual morality slid ever downward, heterosexual relations, including abortion, was OK as long as it wasn't a late-term abortion. Sodomy and sado-masochistic sex were once looked down on. Now almost any perversion is flaunted except sexually abusing children. What's next? Rape, demonic sexual rituals, bestiality, orgies, etc. When we let the truth slide, we find out how deep the pits of perversion are. Turn to Jesus, the Truth Who never changes.
Prayer: Father, by the truth free me from the slavery caused by permissiveness.
Promise: "He laid His hand on her, and immediately she stood up straight and began thanking God." -Lk 13:13
Praise: St. Anthony opposed godlessness in both Spain and Cuba. He continued to preach Christ in the face of several assassination attempts.

Sunday "I MUST DECREASE" (Jn 3:30)

Jesus "spoke this parable addressed to those who believed in their own self-righteousness..."
-Luke 18:9
The Pharisee's piety was admirable. He tithed ten percent of his gross income. He fasted two
days a week, probably a very severe fast. How many of us tithe and fast to that extent?
However, St. Luke points out specifically that his "prayer" was directed to himself, not to
God (Lk 18:11, JB, RSV-CE). He compared his virtue to the standards of other people, not to
the standards of God.
The tax collector's piety was not admirable. The tax collectors of Jesus' time were Jews who
worked for the Romans. They routinely extorted their own people to get a better commission.
Perhaps this was the only time this man had even been to the Temple. But this tax collector
possessed the vision to see his own lowliness before God. He also avoided comparing himself
to others. Instead, He compared his own sinful life to the holiness of God, and cast himself
upon the mercy of God (Lk 18:13).
In today's second reading, St. Paul seems to resemble the Pharisee more than the tax collector.
He "boasts" about how he, too, has been faithful to God (see 2 Tm 4:7). However, St. Paul's
comments were a testimony to the Lord's faithfulness rather than a litany of self-praise meant
for God to overhear. Paul gives credit to God for any good he has done. The Pharisee gives
credit to himself, rejecting God's goodness in his life.
Any good thing in our lives is God's doing (Phil 2:13). "Name something you have that you have
not received," particularly a spiritual talent or gift. "If, then, you have received it, why
are you boasting as if it were your own?" (1 Cor 4:7)
Prayer: Jesus, You "must increase, while I must decrease" (Jn 3:30).
Promise: "The Lord redeems the lives of His servants." -Ps 34:23
Praise: Praise Jesus, Redeemer, Messiah, and risen King!

My wife JISHA had to go through 2 back to back mis carriages in the past , now she is 6 weeks
pregnant again but today she saw some spotting and bleeding . we are soo worried ..please please

Hello. My son, Colton, is 16 years old & received a terrible hit to thigh in a football game. As
a result, a huge calcification has formed (bone) which means bone is woven into a large portion
of his thigh muscle. This cannot be operated on. We are asking for a speedy recovery & for our
son to have full range of motion & be 100% again. We believe in prayer & we ask our Lord in
heaven to please make this calcification reabsorb into his body. Thank you so much.

The Bible Telephone Line (BTL) has been in operation for 24 years. Begun by Fr. Al in 1991, it now
continues with one deacon of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and two lay teachers trained by
Presentation Ministries. The BTL provides callers with a short teaching on the readings for the

"I MUST DECREASE" (Jn 3:30)
Jesus "spoke this parable addressed to those who believed in their own self-righteousness..." -Luke 18:9
The Pharisee's piety was admirable. He tithed ten percent of his gross income. He fasted two days a week, probably a very severe fast. How many of us tithe and fast to that extent? However, St. Luke points out specifically that his "prayer" was directed to himself, not to God (Lk 18:11, JB, RSV-CE). He compared his virtue to the standards of other people, not to the standards of God.
The tax collector's piety was not admirable. The tax collectors of Jesus' time were Jews who worked for the Romans. They routinely extorted their own people to get a better commission. Perhaps this was the only time this man had even been to the Temple. But this tax collector possessed the vision to see his own lowliness before God. He also avoided comparing himself to others. Instead, He compared his own sinful life to the holiness of God, and cast himself upon the mercy of God (Lk 18:13).
In today's second reading, St. Paul seems to resemble the Pharisee more than the tax collector. He "boasts" about how he, too, has been faithful to God (see 2 Tm 4:7). However, St. Paul's comments were a testimony to the Lord's faithfulness rather than a litany of self-praise meant for God to overhear. Paul gives credit to God for any good he has done. The Pharisee gives credit to himself, rejecting God's goodness in his life.
Any good thing in our lives is God's doing (Phil 2:13). "Name something you have that you have not received," particularly a spiritual talent or gift. "If, then, you have received it, why are you boasting as if it were your own?" (1 Cor 4:7)
Prayer: Jesus, You "must increase, while I must decrease" (Jn 3:30).
Promise: "The Lord redeems the lives of His servants." -Ps 34:23
Praise: Praise Jesus, Redeemer, Messiah, and risen King!

HYPOCRITICAL LEAVES - One Bread, One Body, 10/22/2016

HYPOCRITICAL LEAVES
"Look here! For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree and found none. Cut it down. Why should it clutter up the ground?" -Luke 13:7
We don't hear of Jesus cursing straggly, leafless trees. Rather, He cursed good-looking trees with lots of foliage but no fruit (Mt 21:19). Likewise, in Jesus' letters to the churches in Revelation, He does not threaten to close bad-looking churches but ones that have great reputations yet little fruit. For example, to the church of Sardis, Jesus says: "I know the reputation you have of being alive, when in fact you are dead! Wake up" (Rv 3:1-2). To Laodicea, Jesus declares: "You keep saying, 'I am so rich and secure that I want for nothing.' Little do you realize how wretched you are, how pitiable and poor, how blind and naked! Take my advice" (Rv 3:17-18).
To the Church of today, Jesus may be saying the same thing. Yes, we have more foliage than ever - buildings, finances, and programs more than at any other time in the history of Christ's Church. Yet how much fruit is there under all those leaves? I know churches with half-million dollar budgets and five catechumens. Of course, the Church has the responsibility to take care of its old fruit, but where is the new harvest? Jesus curses just leaves. Leaves without fruit are hypocritical.
Prayer: Father, make me a tree which has more fruit than leaves.
Promise: "When He ascended on high, He took a host of captives and gave gifts to men." -Eph 4:8
Praise: Pope St. John Paul II bore much fruit both during his long pontificate and in his timeless writings.

FREE ONE
"There is but one body and one Spirit." -Ephesians 4:4
We must "make every effort to preserve the unity which has the Spirit as its origin and peace as its binding force" (Eph 4:3). Without a deep, Trinitarian unity, the world will not have faith that Jesus has been sent by the Father (Jn 17:21). Without faith in Jesus, we will not let Jesus set us free (Jn 8:36). Thus, we will disqualify ourselves from receiving the graces of the Holy Spirit, the essence of which is freedom (Lv 25:10ff). Therefore, we must be one in Jesus to have faith to accept the freedom of the Spirit.
To grow in unity with the Lord and each other:
* Repent and go to Confession, for sin divides God's people.
* Receive the miracle of Trinitarian unity by receiving Holy Communion daily or as often as possible.
* Forgive those who have offended you.
* Apologize to those whom you have offended.
* Be a minister of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18).
* Pray daily for unity (see Jn 17:20-21).
* Share your faith in Jesus.
* Stir into flame the Holy Spirit of unity (2 Tm 1:6-7).
After we accept a new Pentecost of unity, we will have the Holy Spirit's freedom.
Prayer: Father, if necessary, may I die for Your gift of unity to be accepted (see Jn 11:51-52).
Promise: "There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, Who is over all, and works through all, and is in all." -Eph 4:5-6
Praise: Helen rejoiced when her husband finally joined her in the Catholic Church and they could receive Jesus together.

FAMILY VALUES
"That is why I kneel before the Father from Whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name; and I pray." -Ephesians 3:14-16
Jesus is the second Person of the Trinity. The Trinity is the eternal, ultimate Holy Family. After His Incarnation, Jesus lived in another holy family with Mary and Joseph. Therefore, Jesus has high standards for family life. He calls families to be holy, sacramental signs of the Trinity as Family.
To make holy, Trinitarian families, Jesus:
* lights "a fire on the earth" to purify families (Lk 12:49),
* was baptized, that is, immersed in, the pain of His death on the cross (see Lk 12:50; Mk 10:38),
* surfaces the divisions in families in order to deal with them through forgiveness, repentance, and healing (see Lk 12:51ff),
* dwells in the hearts of family members through faith (Eph 3:17),
* enables us "to grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of" His love (Eph 3:18), and
* does "immeasurably more than we ask or imagine" (Eph 3:20).
Jesus is offering each of us the miracle of a holy, Trinitarian family. Accept His offer by accepting Him as Savior and Lord of your life and your family.
Prayer: Father, make my family a miracle and Your masterpiece.
Promise: "To Him Whose power now at work in us can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine..." -Eph 3:20
Praise: St. Paul of the Cross and his Passionist priests have evangelized far beyond Italy. He had a special ministry to the sick, the dying, the lapsed, and the sinner needing reconciliation.

FAMILY VALUES
"That is why I kneel before the Father from Whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name; and I pray." -Ephesians 3:14-16
Jesus is the second Person of the Trinity. The Trinity is the eternal, ultimate Holy Family. After His Incarnation, Jesus lived in another holy family with Mary and Joseph. Therefore, Jesus has high standards for family life. He calls families to be holy, sacramental signs of the Trinity as Family.
To make holy, Trinitarian families, Jesus:
* lights "a fire on the earth" to purify families (Lk 12:49),
* was baptized, that is, immersed in, the pain of His death on the cross (see Lk 12:50; Mk 10:38),
* surfaces the divisions in families in order to deal with them through forgiveness, repentance, and healing (see Lk 12:51ff),
* dwells in the hearts of family members through faith (Eph 3:17),
* enables us "to grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of" His love (Eph 3:18), and
* does "immeasurably more than we ask or imagine" (Eph 3:20).
Jesus is offering each of us the miracle of a holy, Trinitarian family. Accept His offer by accepting Him as Savior and Lord of your life and your family.
Prayer: Father, make my family a miracle and Your masterpiece.
Promise: "To Him Whose power now at work in us can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine..." -Eph 3:20
Praise: St. Paul of the Cross and his Passionist priests have evangelized far beyond Italy. He had a special ministry to the sick, the dying, the lapsed, and the sinner needing reconciliation.
