Sunday THE SIGN OF HIS LOVE

"They are no longer two but one flesh." -Mark 10:8

The Catholic Church has suffered heavy losses through the scandalous sexual sins of a few priests.
These priests were ordained in the sacrament of Holy Orders to be a sign of God's love for His people.
Instead, the sign the world reads through the sins of these priests is that the Church is no longer
trustworthy.

Catholic married couples are also a sacrament, through the Sacrament of Matrimony, an outward sign of
God's love for the world. God so loved the world that He created us male and female (Gn 1:27). He
poured out His love in our hearts (Rm 5:5) so that married couples would take the lead in showing
broken, bruised humanity how much God loves them. Therefore, no Catholic married couple should ever
criticize a priest for being a poor sign of God's love. Instead, they should look in the mirror, for
a married couple is called to be a great sign of God's love. One marriage rich in God's love can
greatly build up the Church. Far too many Catholic marriages in the USA end in divorce. No wonder the
Church is weakened! People simply read the signs and conclude that God is not with the Church because
wives and husbands don't love each other (cf Eph 5:23-25, 29-32).

Couples, your marriage is not just about the two of you. Your marriage "has been decided in heaven"
(Tb 7:11). Renew your love for each other "not because of lust, but for a noble purpose" (Tb 8:7) of
building up the kingdom of God.


Prayer: Father, may all married couples reading this renew their vows to You and to each other today.
Unite them in Your love.

Promise: "That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them
become one body." -Gn 2:24

Praise: "Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the Lord Who made us. For He is our
God" (Ps 95:6-7). Praise You, risen Lord!

The Bible Telephone Line (BTL) has been in operation for 26 years. Begun by Fr. Al in 1991, it now
continues with one deacon of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and two lay teachers trained by
Presentation Ministries. The BTL provides callers with a short teaching on the readings for the

PURIFICATION AND LIFE

For us Christians, water represents an essential element of purification and of life.


FOLLOWING JESUS

Jesus ... promised a water capable of quenching human thirst for ever. He prophesied, "If any one
thirst, let him come to Me and drink (Jn 7:37). To drink from Jesus means to encounter Him
personally as the Lord, drawing from His words the meaning of life. May the words He spoke from the
cross - "I thirst" (Jn 19:28) - echo constantly in our hearts.


JESUS THIRSTS

The Lord continues to ask that His thirst be quenched; He thirsts for love. He asks us to give Him
to drink in all those who thirst in our own day... To give to drink in the global village, does not

HOPE CHEST

"Thus the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his earlier ones." -Job 42:12

Job is known for his patience, but he should be better known for his hope. If your ten children died in one day, would you have hope? (see Jb 1:19) If you went bankrupt on the same day, would you let God give you the virtue of hope? (see Jb 1:14ff) If you were diseased and racked with pain, would you be hopeful? (see Jb 2:7) Some of us would be like Job's wife and "curse God and die" (Jb 2:9). However, Job, with no help from his wife and his friends, had hope.

"Hoping against hope" (see Rm 4:18), Job had ten more children (Jb 42:13). His three daughters were the most beautiful women in all the land (Jb 42:15). Moreover, God made him twice as rich as before (Jb 42:10). "Hope will not leave us disappointed" (Rm 5:5).

What about the many people who hope in the Lord but die without the blessings given to Job in his later days? Did these people hope in vain? No! Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life (Jn 11:25). Death does not dash our hopes; instead, it leads to the fulfillment of every hope for those who have hoped in Christ. "They that hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar as with eagles' wings; they will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint" (Is 40:31).


Prayer: Father, give me hope, especially in the midst of the worst circumstances in my life.

Promise: "Blest are the eyes that see what you see. I tell you, many prophets and kings wished to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it." -Lk 10:23-24

Praise: St. Bruno founded the first Carthusian monastery, and was appointed advisor on the reform of the clergy to Pope Urban.

CITY LIGHTS

"He who hears you, hears Me. He who rejects you, rejects Me. And he who rejects Me, rejects Him Who sent me." -Luke 10:16

Every Christian is called to be a missionary, that is, to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to an unbelieving world. Some missionaries travel around the world, but most stay in one particular city. If we're called to stay in one city, our task is to bring the kingdom of God to that city.

One day Jesus looked out over the city of Jerusalem and began to mourn and lament. "How often have I wanted to gather your children together as a mother bird collects her young under her wings, and you refused Me!" (Lk 13:34)

Take a good look at the spiritual condition of your city. Let God break your heart for the people in bondage to sins of pride, greed, sensuality, alcoholism, and drugs. How often Jesus has wanted to gather them to Himself and they refused Him! "But how shall they call on Him in Whom they have not believed? And how can they believe unless they have heard of Him? And how can they hear unless there is someone to preach?" (Rm 10:14)

Jesus tells you: "You are the light of the world" (Mt 5:14). You are also the light of your city! The Lord has prepared this city for you (see Heb 11:16). Accept Jesus' call to go out into the "byroads" of your city and invite everyone you meet to come to the Lord (Mt 22:9).


Prayer: Lord, have mercy on my city. Use me to bring Your kingdom on earth as it is in heaven (Mt 6:10).

Promise: "Where can I go from Your Spirit? From Your presence where can I flee? If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I sink to the nether world, You are present there." -Ps 139:7-8

Praise: Bl. Francis risked his life ministering to the sick in works of charity and evangelization. As a result of his loving outreach, he eventually contracted yellow fever and died. "There is no greater love than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends" (Jn 15:13).

A WONDER: WORKERS! - One Bread, One Body, 10/4/2018

A WONDER: WORKERS!

"The harvest is rich but the workers are few; therefore ask the Harvest-Master to send workers to His harvest." -Luke 10:2

Job was one of the Lord's most faithful workers. The Lord permitted Satan to take away almost all of Job's riches, kill his ten children, and give Job a life-threatening, painful disease (Jb 1:12ff). Even if the Lord later gave Job twice as much as he had lost (Jb 42:10), no wonder the Lord's workers are few! (Lk 10:2)

The Lord sends out His workers "as lambs in the midst of wolves" (Lk 10:3). He tells them to take nothing with them and to live from moment to moment trusting Him for everything (Lk 10:4). No wonder the Lord's workers are few!

The crucified Lord promised us that we, His disciples and co-workers (1 Cor 3:9), would be persecuted as He was persecuted (Jn 15:20; 2 Tm 3:12; Mt 5:11). Under these conditions, no wonder few are willing to work!

Now Jesus asks each of us to work for Him. He will reward us with the eternal happiness of heaven (see 2 Tm 4:8), but He doesn't put that much emphasis on it. He mostly talks about the cross. This ensures that each of us decides to work for Jesus out of love for Him. A wonder: workers for His harvest!


Prayer: Father, may love impel me to work for You (see 2 Cor 5:14).

Promise: "I believe that I shall see the bounty of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord." -Ps 27:13-14

Praise: St. Francis' approach to war was to pray zealously for the conversion of the enemy, ignore the threats on his life, and proclaim the gospel personally to the enemy leader.

RECRUITING OR DISCIPLING?

"Why, O Lord, do You reject me; why hide from me Your face?" -Psalm 88:15

It's doubtful that Jesus would be hired as a personnel director for a Fortune 500 company. Imagine the lawsuits that would occur if a company employee gave such brusque and seemingly insulting replies to a potential applicant as Jesus does in today's Gospel passage!

Unfortunately, it's also unlikely that Jesus, despite the fact that He is Head of the Church (Eph 1:22), would be approved as a parish personnel director today. It's hard to find good help in our church ministries. When we finally get someone who is willing to work, the last thing we typically want to do is to run them off by taking away their desk (Lk 9:58) or challenging their sincerity (Lk 9:60ff).

The Lord's ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts (Is 55:8). His ways and thoughts tower above ours, as high as the heavens are above the earth (Is 55:9). Although Jesus is certainly concerned about ministry, discipleship is His highest priority (see Mt 28:19). He calls a would-be disciple to total commitment. Joshua (Jos 24:19), John the Baptizer (Mt 3:7-8), Peter (Acts 8:20-21), and Paul (Acts 15:37-38) were like Jesus in that they all challenged those who said they were ready to commit to the Lord.

Calling others to a total commitment means that we will be rejected more often. However, it also means that we will raise up some totally committed, fruitful disciples who will build up the kingdom of God.


Prayer: Father, I am Your slave (Col 3:24). Use me as You will.

Promise: "God is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who has withstood Him and remained unscathed?" -Jb 9:4

Praise: Louise has been praying the Liturgy of the Hours daily for over ten years.

GUARDING ATTACKERS

"I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes. My angel will go before you." -Exodus 23:22-23

Guardian angels don't just guard us. They are very specialized guards. They don't so much guard us from attacking enemies as much as they guard us when attacking enemies. Guardian angels have the job of guarding us as we attack the gates of hell (Mt 16:18). They guard us "on the way" to war and then in war (Ex 23:20). Their job is not so much to protect us from our enemies but to wipe out our enemies (Ex 23:23).

We as Christians are called to be militant - not in physical violence but in spiritual warfare (see Eph 6:12). We are to shoot Satan out of the sky (Lk 10:18) and quickly crush him under our feet (Rm 16:20). We are to turn the world right side up (see Acts 17:6) and be a force to be reckoned with. When we fight this good fight (see 2 Tm 4:7), we need this specialized type of guard duty from the guardian angels. However, if we aren't militantly attacking the gates of hell, our guardian angels are unemployed or at least underemployed.

If you want to see your guardian angel work, then fight the evil one.


Prayer: Father, make me such a threat to the kingdom of darkness that I will need guardian angels.

Promise: "See that you never despise one of these little ones. I assure you, their angels in heaven constantly behold My heavenly Father's face." -Mt 18:10

Praise: Pete credits his daughter's guardian angel with keeping her from being hit by an on rushing car at the age of six.
