DO YOU LOVE JESUS?

"Peter was hurt because He had asked a third time, 'Do you love Me?' So he said to Him: 'Lord, You know everything. You know well that I love You.' Jesus said to him, 'Feed My sheep.' " -John 21:17

If we love Jesus, we will feed His sheep, that is, we will feed God's people with God's Word, for "not on bread alone is man to live but on every utterance that comes from the mouth of God" (Mt 4:4; Dt 8:3). Peter showed his love for Jesus by standing up on the first Pentecost Sunday, proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah, and leading three-thousand people to Jesus and the life in the Spirit (Acts 2:14ff). If we love Jesus, we will stand up this Pentecost 2019 and lead people to Jesus and the Spirit.

We may not have the opportunity to speak to thousands as Peter did, but we will receive phone calls, send text messages and e-mails, and have conversations. We will have opportunities to share Pentecost with a spouse, children, relatives, co-workers, neighbors, and friends. We will have a lampstand to let the light of Pentecost shine for all in the house (Lk 11:33). If we are not willing to proclaim the Spirit on the streets, we will not receive the Spirit in the upper room. All Christians are called to live Pentecost, to evangelize, according to the particular calling God has given them in their state of life.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, give me the love that will result in evangelization. May I share the Gospel with at least three people in the next three days.

Promise: "Instead they differed with him over issues in their own religion, and about a certain Jesus Who had died but Who Paul claimed is alive." -Acts 25:19

Praise: Mark learned to love "Jesus in disguise" in the poor while volunteering at the soup kitchen.

THE PROBLEM OF TRUTH AND LOVE

"A dispute arose between Pharisees and Sadducees which divided the whole assembly." -Acts 23:7

We must be men and women of the truth, for God is the Truth (Jn 14:6) and the Holy Spirit guides us to all truth (Jn 16:13). The Church is "the pillar and bulwark of truth" (1 Tm 3:15), and God's "word is truth" (Jn 17:17). Thus, Jesus' disciples are "consecrated in truth" (Jn 17:19).

Men and women of truth must stand up for the truth and "even to the death fight for truth" (Sir 4:28). However, we must do this in love (see Eph 4:15), for without love, we gain nothing even in living and dying for the truth (see 1 Cor 13:3). Those who fight for the truth without having love are zealots. Those who think they are loving without being men and women of the truth are self-deceived and destructive to themselves and others.

Only the Holy "Spirit of truth" (Jn 16:13), Who is also the Spirit of love (see Gal 5:22), can give us the wisdom to insist on the truth in a loving way and to insist on love being based on truth. How can we maintain the common good and protect innocent people from being victimized? How can we stop Planned Parenthood and so many other pro-death organizations from killing many more millions of babies? How can we do this in love and without violence, even psychological violence? We need the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit of truth and love. Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, on this seventh day of the Pentecost novena, give me the love to die not only for the truth but also for those who oppose the truth.

Promise: "That night the Lord appeared at Paul's side and said: 'Keep up your courage!' " -Acts 23:11

Praise: St. Norbert led an undisciplined life until he had a dramatic conversion to Christ in 1115 A.D. Once ordained, he began preaching to the priests of his day.

"THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT"

"Be on guard, therefore. Do not forget that for three years, night and day, I never ceased warning you individually even to the point of tears." -Acts 20:31

Paul warned the Ephesian Christians individually for three years, night and day. He warned them of "savage wolves" from their own number who would distort the truth and lead astray any who follow them (Acts 20:29-30).

Guarding Christians against false teaching is a major emphasis in the New Testament. Jesus warns us against wolves in sheep's clothing (Mt 7:15) and hireling shepherds who don't protect the sheep (Jn 10:12-13). Paul told Timothy to "stay on in Ephesus in order to warn certain people there against teaching false doctrines" (1 Tm 1:3). He warned Timothy: "The time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but, following their own desires, will surround themselves with teachers who tickle their ears. They will stop listening to the truth and will wander off to fables" (2 Tm 4:3-4).

Using the sword of the Spirit (see Eph 6:17), the Church is to be "the pillar and bulwark of truth" (1 Tm 3:15). In the power of the Spirit of Truth (see Jn 16:13), we are "to fight hard for the faith delivered once for all to the saints" (Jude 3). We "must hold fast to the authentic message, so that [we] will be able both to encourage men to follow sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict it. There are many irresponsible teachers" (Ti 1:9-10). "Their lustful ways will lure many away. Through them, the true way will be made subject to contempt" (2 Pt 2:2).

Therefore, "guard the rich deposit of faith with the help of the Holy Spirit who dwells within us" (2 Tm 1:14).

Prayer: Father, on this sixth day of the novena to the Holy Spirit, send the Spirit of truth.

Promise: "I consecrate Myself for their sakes now, that they may be consecrated in truth." -Jn 17:19

Praise: St. Boniface is known as the Apostle of the Germans.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

SPIRITUAL RECYCLING

"The Holy Spirit has been warning me." -Acts 20:23

We are halfway through the Pentecost Novena. By this time in the novena, the Holy Spirit has been quite active. The Holy Spirit has been working on preparing our hearts for Pentecost. The Spirit has been consoling us, instructing us (Jn 14:26), leading us to the truth (Jn 16:13), and warning us about repentance and other changes we must make (Acts 20:23).

As the novena continues, the Spirit will be helping us pray, for we know not how to pray as we ought (Rm 8:26). The Spirit will fight against our sinful flesh (Gal 5:17), prompting us to repent more deeply and giving us a greater desire to be holy. The Holy Spirit will give us a greater thirst for Jesus (Jn 7:37-39). Then Jesus will pour out the Spirit in ever greater abundance on us, for "He does not ration His gift of the Spirit" (Jn 3:34). In turn, the Spirit will lead us to the Father, inspiring us to "cry out, 'Abba!' (that is, 'Father')" (Rm 8:15). Then the Father will pour out His love "in our hearts through the Holy Spirit" (Rm 5:5) and Jesus will baptize us anew in the Holy Spirit (Mk 1:8). As Pentecost approaches, we should be so immersed in Trinitarian love that we will literally be "filled with the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:4).

In five days, the Holy Spirit will be poured out anew at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit is warning you (Acts 20:23) to prepare for an outpouring beyond anything you can ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20). "Follow the Spirit's lead" (Gal 5:25).

Prayer: Father, I set my heart on the gifts of the Spirit (1 Cor 14:1).

Promise: "Eternal life is this: to know You, the only true God, and Him Whom You have sent, Jesus Christ." -Jn 17:3

Praise: George's thirst for the Holy Spirit grew throughout the Pentecost novena. He now reads the Bible and attends Mass daily.

GOD'S WORD OVERCOMES THE WORLD

"You will suffer in the world. But take courage! I have overcome the world." -John 16:33

At the age of sixteen, after Christmas Mass, I found in the alcove of the Church a pamphlet called Through the Bible in One Year. It featured a daily checklist in which you could read several chapters of the Bible a day for an entire year. Each day, you checked the box when you finished the readings, and at the end of the year, you would have read the entire Bible. On the first day of 1973, I was excited to read several chapters of Genesis and checked the box on the list for January 1st. By the grace of the Holy Spirit, I read the Scriptures each day, and on Dec. 31, 1973, I finished the final chapters of Revelation.

The Scripture verse that jumped off the page for me that year was the final verse of today's Gospel passage, the verse highlighted at the top of this page. It came in early fall, and as I read John 16:33, a wave of holy joy and elation which I had never before experienced surged through me. Jesus has overcome the world! He has suffered greatly, but He has conquered the very worst this world could throw at Him, so that we could be saved and share eternal life with Him. Alleluia!

I still cannot read John 16:33 without experiencing that same surge of joy. The Word has overcome the world. The Spirit fights against the world (Gal 5:17) and helps us overcome the world, the flesh (see Eph 2:3), and the devil (1 Jn 2:16). Praise Jesus forever! He has overcome the world and gives us courage to do the same.

Prayer: Father, on this fourth day of the Pentecost novena, send the Holy Spirit to teach me Your Word.

Promise: "As Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came down on them and they began to speak in tongues and utter prophecies." -Acts 19:6

Praise: St. Charles & Companions were willing to sacrifice their lives rather than sacrifice their chastity and purity.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday LOST LOVE OR NEW LOVE?
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=6/2/2019

"He was lifted up before their eyes in a cloud which took Him from their sight." -Acts 1:9

Because we can grow in love when we are in someone's presence, we treasure the time we spend with those
we love. A birth is such a wonderful event because the baby is present to the world and not only to the
mother. A death is so difficult because we can no longer in the same way be in the presence of the one
who has died.

Therefore, Jesus' Ascension would seem to have presented a major problem. Jesus could no longer be seen,
heard, or touched. This would seem to make our relationship with Him impossible. However, Jesus said
that He would not leave us orphans (Jn 14:18) and that He would be with us forever (see Mt 28:20). He
even said that it was better for us that He go (Jn 16:7).

After Jesus' Ascension, He sent the Holy Spirit so that we could be much deeper in love with Him than
when He walked the earth. In the Spirit, we have the faith to be baptized into Jesus (see Rm 6:3). He
lives in us; we live in Him (see Jn 17:23). We even receive His Body and Blood (Jn 6:56). Nothing like
this was possible when Jesus lived on the earth. Jesus' Ascension is an astounding opportunity to be in
deep love with Him, if we receive the Holy Spirit of Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, on this third day of the Pentecost Novena, make me see the inadequacies of my love for
You and make me desire new and greater life and love.

Promise: "As He blessed, He left them, and was taken up to heaven. They fell down to do Him reverence,
then returned to Jerusalem filled with joy." -Lk 24:51-52

Praise: All praise to our risen Jesus who now takes His place at the right hand of the Father. Alleluia!

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

"HOPES OF MILLIONS"

The annual celebration of World Food Day emphasizes ... the needs, yearnings and hopes of millions of
persons who lack bread each day. Increasingly, there are more people who sadly make up part of that
great number of human beings who have nothing, or almost nothing to eat. It should be the opposite
and yet recent statistics are a painful proof of how international solidarity appears to be cooling.

"EFFECTIVE HELP"

The poor expect from us an effective help that takes them out of their misery... In this twenty-first
century that has seen considerable advances in the field of technology, science, communications and
infrastructure, we ought to feel shame for not having achieved the same advances in humanity and
solidarity, and so satisfy the primary needs of the most disadvantaged.

"WE MUST DO BETTER"

We are all called to go further. We can and we must do better for the helpless. We must move to
concrete action, so that the scourge of hunger disappears completely.

LOST LOVE OR NEW LOVE?

"He was lifted up before their eyes in a cloud which took Him from their sight." -Acts 1:9

Because we can grow in love when we are in someone's presence, we treasure the time we spend with those we love. A birth is such a wonderful event because the baby is present to the world and not only to the mother. A death is so difficult because we can no longer in the same way be in the presence of the one who has died.

Therefore, Jesus' Ascension would seem to have presented a major problem. Jesus could no longer be seen, heard, or touched. This would seem to make our relationship with Him impossible. However, Jesus said that He would not leave us orphans (Jn 14:18) and that He would be with us forever (see Mt 28:20). He even said that it was better for us that He go (Jn 16:7).

After Jesus' Ascension, He sent the Holy Spirit so that we could be much deeper in love with Him than when He walked the earth. In the Spirit, we have the faith to be baptized into Jesus (see Rm 6:3). He lives in us; we live in Him (see Jn 17:23). We even receive His Body and Blood (Jn 6:56). Nothing like this was possible when Jesus lived on the earth. Jesus' Ascension is an astounding opportunity to be in deep love with Him, if we receive the Holy Spirit of Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, on this third day of the Pentecost Novena, make me see the inadequacies of my love for You and make me desire new and greater life and love.

Promise: "As He blessed, He left them, and was taken up to heaven. They fell down to do Him reverence, then returned to Jerusalem filled with joy." -Lk 24:51-52

Praise: All praise to our risen Jesus who now takes His place at the right hand of the Father. Alleluia!
