A CHRISTIAN CHRISTMAS
"Every spirit that acknowledges Jesus Christ come in the flesh belongs to God, while every spirit that fails to acknowledge Him does not belong to God. Such is the spirit of the antichrist which, as you have heard, is to come; in fact, it is in the world already." -1 John 4:2-3
Most of us are Christians. That means that we do things not primarily because they are good but because they are ways of imitating Christ. For example, we heal the sick not primarily to help the sick but to imitate Christ, for He heals the sick (see Mt 4:23ff). We pray not primarily because it's a good thing to do but because Jesus prayed, and we want to be like Him. Christians are baptized into Jesus (Rm 6:3). We are immersed in Him and are preoccupied with producing His life in our lives (Gal 2:20).
Therefore, to become one of the antichrists we don't have to deny Christ or do bad things. Antichrists simply fail to acknowledge Christ (see 1 Jn 4:2-3) and fail to make the imitation of Christ the main meaning of their lives.
In this last week of the Christmas season, let us give Christ the birthday present of deciding to be His disciples, that is, to imitate Him so closely that we could rightly be called Christians. Give Christ the Christmas gift of making more Christians, acknowledging Him constantly by imitating Him closely.
Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit, the true Christmas Spirit, to teach me the meaning of Christianity.
Promise: "A people living in darkness has seen a great light. On those who inhabit a land overshadowed by death, light has arisen." -Mt 4:16
Praise: St. André was a Holy Cross Brother. His first assignment was doorkeeper for Notre Dame College in Montreal. As more mundane responsibilities followed, he never lost his sense of humor. He shared Christ with all those he met and many were healed by the healing touch of the Lord.

Sunday WHEN THE STAR FADES...

"We observed His star at its rising..." -Matthew 2:2
In their homeland, the Magi saw a great star at its rising. Greatly impressed, they set out on their journey
to follow the star to greet the newborn King to Whom they believed the star pointed. After they had traveled
for a time, they could no longer see the star. They were past the point of no return, and were not sure where
God was now leading them. But the Magi did not give up on God's leading; they did not quit and return back
home. Instead, they did the reasonable thing; they consulted the nearby leader, King Herod of Israel. Though
Herod harbored ill will, he unwittingly sent them to the right place, Bethlehem, when his advisors consulted
the Hebrew Scriptures. As the Magi set out in blind faith for Bethlehem, suddenly the star re-appeared. It's
no wonder the Magi "were overjoyed at seeing the star" (Mt 2:10). God's guidance for their journey had resumed.
Have you ever started on a journey of faith in response to the clear prompting of God? You commit yourself to
the journey, burn your bridges behind you (see 1 Kgs 19:19-21), and then it seems like God's divine guidance
completely vanishes. This is a pattern that many have experienced in their lives of faith. This might be a
test from God, "the Tester of our Hearts" (1 Thes 2:4).
If you're in this situation, the Magi are a model for you. Persevere in trust, as they did, and believe that
God will guide you at the proper time. "Walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Cor 5:7). "Commit to the Lord your way;
trust in Him, and He will act" (Ps 37:5).
Prayer: Jesus, like the Magi, I give You the gift of my life. I will follow You wherever You lead. "In my life,
Lord, be glorified."
Promise: "In Christ Jesus the Gentiles are now co-heirs with the Jews, members of the same body." -Eph 3:6
Praise: "The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Savior of the world"
(see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 528). Alleluia!

feeding from tubes, Lord cover them with your precious divine merciful healing touch and let every organ in

also their parents and grand parents. Let your will be done in their lives now and always. Amen

The Bible Telephone Line (BTL) has been in operation for 28 years. Begun by Fr. Al in 1991, it now
continues with one deacon of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and two lay teachers trained by
Presentation Ministries. The BTL provides callers with a short teaching on the readings for the

entrusted her, struggles daily throughout the world against hunger and malnutrition in multiple ways and
through her various structures and associations, remembering that those who suffer from misery are not
different from us. They share our flesh and blood. They deserve ... a friendly hand to help and support
them, in such a way that no one is left behind, so that in our world fraternal solidarity may boast its
own identity card and citizenship, beyond any flashy slogans void of substance.

The annual celebration of World Food Day emphasizes ... the needs, yearnings and hopes of millions of
persons who lack bread each day. Increasingly, there are more people who sadly make up part of that great
number of human beings who have nothing, or almost nothing to eat. It should be the opposite and yet
recent statistics are a painful proof of how international solidarity appears to be cooling.
"EFFECTIVE HELP"
The poor expect from us an effective help that takes them out of their misery... In this twenty-first
century that has seen considerable advances in the field of technology, science, communications and
infrastructure, we ought to feel shame for not having achieved the same advances in humanity and
solidarity, and so satisfy the primary needs of the most disadvantaged.

WHEN THE STAR FADES...
"We observed His star at its rising..." -Matthew 2:2
In their homeland, the Magi saw a great star at its rising. Greatly impressed, they set out on their journey to follow the star to greet the newborn King to Whom they believed the star pointed. After they had traveled for a time, they could no longer see the star. They were past the point of no return, and were not sure where God was now leading them. But the Magi did not give up on God's leading; they did not quit and return back home. Instead, they did the reasonable thing; they consulted the nearby leader, King Herod of Israel. Though Herod harbored ill will, he unwittingly sent them to the right place, Bethlehem, when his advisors consulted the Hebrew Scriptures. As the Magi set out in blind faith for Bethlehem, suddenly the star re-appeared. It's no wonder the Magi "were overjoyed at seeing the star" (Mt 2:10). God's guidance for their journey had resumed.
Have you ever started on a journey of faith in response to the clear prompting of God? You commit yourself to the journey, burn your bridges behind you (see 1 Kgs 19:19-21), and then it seems like God's divine guidance completely vanishes. This is a pattern that many have experienced in their lives of faith. This might be a test from God, "the Tester of our Hearts" (1 Thes 2:4).
If you're in this situation, the Magi are a model for you. Persevere in trust, as they did, and believe that God will guide you at the proper time. "Walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Cor 5:7). "Commit to the Lord your way; trust in Him, and He will act" (Ps 37:5).
Prayer: Jesus, like the Magi, I give You the gift of my life. I will follow You wherever You lead. "In my life, Lord, be glorified."
Promise: "In Christ Jesus the Gentiles are now co-heirs with the Jews, members of the same body." -Eph 3:6
Praise: "The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Savior of the world" (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 528). Alleluia!

STAR WARS
"It was to destroy the devil's works that the Son of God revealed Himself." -1 John 3:8
The purpose of God becoming man, and therefore the purpose of Christmas, is to destroy the devil's works. That's why the anti-Christ denies Christ come in the flesh (1 Jn 4:2-3). That's why Herod "convulsed" in a violent reaction when he heard about the newborn King of the Jews (see Mt 2:2ff). Herod did not overreact but understood the true meaning of Christmas much better than most people.
Christmas is God's invasion of the devil's privacy here on earth. Christmas is an attack on the gates of hell which cannot prevail against us (Mt 16:18). Christmas is a behind-the-lines insurgency of the kingdom of light against the kingdom of darkness (Col 1:13). Christmas is war, or more precisely, placing Christ's enemies beneath His feet (Heb 10:13).
The Lord is enlisting troops in His Christmas army. Will you join Him? 2020 is the year of victory. Whose side are you on? Neutrality is complicity with the enemy (see Rv 3:15-16). You're either with Jesus or you're with Herod (Mt 12:30). It's Christmas time on the battlefield. You must decide.
Prayer: Jesus, I'll fight for You, even if I have to die.
Promise: "He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with equity." -Ps 98:9
Praise: St. Elizabeth Seton, a wife and mother of five, always bowed to the will of God. She founded the first American orphanage and the Sisters of Charity, and became the first citizen of the United States of America to be canonized. Even before she converted to Catholicism, she participated in Catholic devotions. For instance, she wore a crucifix and completed a daily examination of conscience.

CHRISTMAS ENDS WITH PENTECOST - One Bread, One Body, 1/3/2020

CHRISTMAS ENDS WITH PENTECOST
"When you see the Spirit descend and rest on Someone, it is He Who is to baptize with the Holy Spirit." -John 1:33
The finale of the Christmas season is not Christmas day or even Epiphany but the Baptism of Jesus. This is more emphasized in the Eastern Church. Christmas is Trinitarian. Christmas is to the Father, through the Son, and in the Spirit. Christmas is focused on Christ and culminates in the Holy Spirit, the only true Christmas Spirit. Thus, we should be looking to conclude the Christmas season by having the Holy Spirit stirred into flame in our lives (see 2 Tm 1:6-7). In a way, the Christmas season ends as Easter does - with a new Pentecost.
In our Baptism, Jesus has immersed us in the Holy Spirit (see Jn 1:33). We should be preoccupied with the Holy Spirit. However, we can fall into the temptation of being preoccupied with ourselves. The Lord teaches through the Church: "The more we renounce ourselves, the more we 'walk by the Spirit' " (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 736). The Spirit poured out within us fights against our selfishness (Gal 5:17). By the Spirit, we can "put to death the evil deeds of the body" (Rm 8:13).
In these last nine days of the Christmas season, let us not merely "have the Christmas spirit" but may the Holy Spirit of Christmas have us. Then we will truly have a great Christmas.
Prayer: Father, give me Christmas by Your standards.
Promise: "See what love the Father has bestowed on us in letting us be called children of God. Yet that is what we are." -1 Jn 3:1
Praise: "The apostles for their part left the Sanhedrin full of joy that they had been judged worthy of ill-treatment for the sake of the Name" (Acts 5:41). "At the Name of Jesus every knee shall bow."

WHO ARE YOU?
"The testimony John gave when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask, 'Who are you?'..." -John 1:19
It is very important for us to know our identity, that is, who we are. For if we don't know who we are, we don't know why we are, what we are to do, or who others are. Because it is so important to know our identity, the Lord reveals our identity to us. We know who we are because of Him. We are who we are because of Him. Who we are is who we are in Him.
Because it is so important to know our identity, Satan uses people to lie to us about our identity. These liars deny the identity of Jesus as God and thereby deny our identity in Him. These liars tell us we can create our own identity, as if we could create ourselves. Consequently, we must know who the liar is (see 1 Jn 2:22) in order to hold onto our faith in Christ's identity and thereby have the basis for knowing who we truly are in Him.
As we continue the Christmas celebration of Christ's birth, and as we begin a new year, let us totally give our lives to Jesus. In that total commitment, we paradoxically lose ourselves to find ourselves (Lk 9:24). In knowing our identity, we know what life is about so that we can live the new year freely and fully for Jesus.
Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to confirm me in my identity as Your child.
Promise: "He Himself made us a promise and the promise is no less than this: eternal life." -1 Jn 2:25
Praise: St. Gregory wasn't only St. Basil's intimate friend, he was also his biographer. St. Basil is the patron saint of hospital administrators.

It is very important for us to know our identity, that is, who we are. For if we don't know who we are, we don't know why we are, what we are to do, or who others are. Because it is so important to know our identity, the Lord reveals our identity to us. We know who we are because of Him. We are who we are because of Him. Who we are is who we are in Him.
Because it is so important to know our identity, Satan uses people to lie to us about our identity. These liars deny the identity of Jesus as God and thereby deny our identity in Him. These liars tell us we can create our own identity, as if we could create ourselves. Consequently, we must know who the liar is (see 1 Jn 2:22) in order to hold onto our faith in Christ's identity and thereby have the basis for knowing who we truly are in Him.
As we continue the Christmas celebration of Christ's birth, and as we begin a new year, let us totally give our lives to Jesus. PEACE-MONGER
"The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace!" -Numbers 6:26
Mary bore Jesus, the "Prince of Peace" (Is 9:5). Mary is called the Queen of Peace. "When the designated time had come" (Gal 4:4), she bore (Mi 5:2) a child "Who is our Peace" (Eph 2:14; see also Mi 5:4). This Child came "to make peace" (Eph 2:15) and announce the "good news of peace" (Eph 2:17). Jesus made "peace through the blood of His cross" (Col 1:20).
How ironic that Mary, the woman of peace, was forced to live in such turmoil and sorrow. As a teenage mother, she had to flee to Egypt as a refugee in the middle of the night to save her Son from government soldiers who were trying to hunt Him down and assassinate Him (Mt 2:13ff). Even as she raised her Son "to guide our feet into the way of peace" (Lk 1:79), her heart was pierced many times with a sword of sorrow (Lk 2:35). Finally, Mary had to suffer the unspeakable agony of standing at the foot of the cross of her only Son, watching Him die a humiliating, excruciating death (Jn 19:25ff).
With Mary, the blessed "peacemaker" (see Mt 5:9), begin this first day of the new year by praying for peace. On this World Day of Prayer for Peace, join Mary, Queen of Peace, in asking her Son, the Prince of Peace, for shalom-peace for our world.
Prayer: Father, may I make "every effort to preserve the unity which has the Spirit as its origin and peace as its binding force" (Eph 4:3).
Promise: "You are no longer a slave but a son!" -Gal 4:7
Praise: "We believe that the Holy Mother of God, the new Eve, Mother of the Church, continues in heaven to exercise her maternal role on behalf of the members of Christ" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 975). Praise You, Lord, for sending Mary as our mother.
