"THE HEART OF DARKNESS"
"All these evils come from within." —Mark 7:23

Jesus said: “Wicked designs come from the deep recesses of the heart” (Mk 7:21) and not from eating the wrong foods (see Mk 7:18-19). He denied the old saying: “You are what you eat.” Food is not the issue; the heart is.

What affects us permanently is not so much what we put in our mouths, but what enters our lives through our eyes and ears. Jesus said: “The eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyesight is sound, your whole body is lighted up, but when your eyesight is bad, your body is in darkness” (Lk 11:34). St. Paul taught, “Faith...comes through hearing” (Rm 10:17). What we believe and don’t believe has been affected by what we have heard with our ears. Therefore, Isaiah described a righteous person as “stopping his ears lest he hear of bloodshed, closing his eyes lest he look on evil” (Is 33:15). We must guard our eyes and ears. Otherwise, our hearts will be in great danger of defilement. If defiled, they will spew forth “acts of fornication, theft, murder, adulterous conduct, greed, maliciousness, deceit, sensuality, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, an obtuse spirit” (Mk 7:21-22).

Consequently, you can see how dangerous a smartphone or TV is. They can bombard our hearts with thousands of pictures and words which, unless extremely good, will be extremely devastating in their effect on us. Misusing a smartphone or TV can destroy our hearts. Guard your heart (see Phil 4:7; Prv 4:23).



Prayer: Jesus, Doctor and Surgeon, remove any foreign elements from my heart.

Promise: "Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord, my God, You are great indeed!" —Ps 104:1

Praise: The Williams family spent decades without a TV in their home and instead enthroned Christ as Lord of their home. All of their children have remained steadfastly in the Church as they became adults.

FROM RUINED MASTERPIECE TO...
"God said: 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.' " —Genesis 1:26

Of all creation, only human beings are made in the image and likeness of God. When God looked at the oceans and mountains He had created, He said, “good” (Gn 1:12, 18). After God created human beings, He said, “very good” (Gn 1:31). We are the crown of creation. We are God’s pride and joy.

Consequently, Satan, in his rebellion against and hatred of God, thought that disfiguring God’s prize creation would be a prime way to offend God. So Satan seduced us into yielding to his temptations. In that way, he wounded and warped human nature. God’s masterpiece seemed ruined.

Then God sent His Son to become a man. Jesus, the God-Man, is the perfect Image of the Father (Col 1:15) and the perfect man (Eph 4:13). By being baptized into Jesus and by imitating Him, we “are being transformed from glory to glory into His very image by the Lord Who is the Spirit” (2 Cor 3:18). In Baptism, our disfigured, wounded, and warped human nature is buried, and we received a new nature by which we share in the divine nature (2 Pt 1:4). Thus, as new creations in Jesus (see Gal 6:15), we are even more in the image and likeness of God than when human beings were first created. The Lord has worked all things together for the good of those who love Him (Rm 8:28). Baptized into Christ and made holy by the Spirit, we live as Christ’s disciples, restored and transformed into an even better image and likeness of God. We are the crown of God’s new creation. We are more than His pride and joy. We are His sons and daughters. Alleluia!



Prayer: Father, thank You for adopting me as Your child.

Promise: "God blessed them, saying: 'Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.' " —Gn 1:28

Praise: Every week, Jacob lights a candle in front of the Lourdes grotto in his church and offers specific intercession for a loved one. Many of the intercessions have been granted.

JESUS RE-ORDERS
"How manifold are Your works, O Lord! In wisdom You have wrought them all." —Psalm 104:24

God created nature and put it in a specific order (Gn 1:1ff; Heb 11:3, RNAB). The sun rises and sets daily (Gn 1:5). The ocean does not overreach its boundaries (Gn 1:9-10; Jer 5:22). Man and woman were likewise created in this initial order. Then Satan came and sowed disorder into God’s orderly creation.

In today’s Gospel passage, we read that Jesus intervenes in the disorder by bringing healing (Mk 6:56). The Father sent Jesus to bring a new order, a re-ordering. He undoes disease and injury. Not only does Jesus restore the originally created order, He renews and completes it (see 2 Cor 5:17). A person touches the tassel of Jesus’ cloak and is healed (Mk 6:56). In Christ, the “old order has passed away” (Rv 21:4, RNAB). Now all is new! (Rv 21:5)

 We are in the beginning of the season of Ordinary Time. God is a god of order (1 Cor 14:33). Christ’s kingdom has a “new order” (Heb 9:10; 1 Cor 15:23). Change your life and do everything in God’s proper order (1 Cor 14:40).



Prayer: Father, I re-order my entire life to be under the rule of King Jesus.

Promise: "All who touched [Jesus] got well." —Mk 6:56

Praise: St. Scholastica served Jesus with life-long, unbroken faithfulness as a religious sister. She was a virgin, intercessor, and twin sister to St. Benedict.

SEEING AND OBEYING
"My eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!" —Isaiah 6:5

Jesus showed Sts. Peter, James and John His transfigured glory, radiant beyond all measure (Mt 17:1ff). He showed these same apostles His power over death in raising the daughter of Jairus (Mk 5:37ff). Finally, He showed them His agony in the garden of Gethsemane at His approaching death (Mt 26:37ff).

Whether Jesus shows us glory or suffering, He calls us to put out into the deep (Lk 5:4), to be not afraid (Lk 5:10), and to follow Him wherever He leads (Lk 9:23). It’s up to the Lord whether He lets us see majesty or suffering. It is up to us to receive His grace and say “Yes” to Jesus.

There is glory and grandeur in our life of faith. There are also many tiny mustard seeds, small beginnings (Zec 4:10), crosses, rejections, persecutions and failures. Whether we are permitted to see things great or small, successes or failures, so much more are we called to rejoice and give our all to belong to the Body of Christ. We are richly blessed to serve Jesus in whichever way He calls us. Who are we that the Lord Jesus, King of the Universe, would call us to such a noble task as to be fishers of men and women? (Lk 5:10) Answer His call. Catch people for Jesus.



Prayer: Father, I will be attentive to whatever You let me see. Grant me the grace to follow Jesus wholeheartedly.

Promise: "Do not be afraid. From now on you will be catching men." —Lk 5:10

Praise: Praise Jesus, "the Resurrection and the Life" (Jn 11:25). In Him, we will be raised from the dead and live eternally. Alleluia forever!

"Through [Jesus] let us continually offer God a sacrifice of praise." —Hebrews 13:15

Our whole life should be a sacrifice of praise. Our good deeds and generosity are primarily sacrifices of praise blending into the cosmic symphony of worship to the Lord (Heb 13:16). We not only worship the Lord in spirit, but offer our “bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God, [our] spiritual worship” (Rm 12:1). When we offer praise as a sacrifice, we glorify God (Ps 50:23).

“Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all my being, bless His holy name” (Ps 103:1). We praise with all our being and all our time. Life can be simply defined as an ever-mounting crescendo of praise. At the end, we just praise our way off the face of this earth and enter the perfect, eternal praise of Heaven.

Ask the Spirit to increase your praise quotient. How much of the day do you praise and worship? How many of your deeds praise Him? Ask God to increase your praise time. Praise the Lord for things you never have included in your praises before. Can you now praise Him in even the most difficult circumstance? Say you’ve had a bad day. You’ve been attacked, stripped, flogged, imprisoned, and chained (Acts 16:22-24). With Sts. Paul and Silas (Acts 16:25), can you still praise the Lord “always and for everything”? (Eph 5:20)



Prayer: "May the God of peace, Who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep by the blood of the eternal covenant, Jesus our Lord, furnish you with all that is good, that you may do His will" (Heb 13:20-21).

Promise: Jesus "pitied them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them at great length." —Mk 6:34

Praise: St. Josephine was treated brutally as a child by her slave masters. Then a kinder master placed her in a convent for a time. Josephine profoundly experienced the love of God. She eventually became a joy-filled religious sister.
