ARE THE GREATEST CONVERSIONS COMING?
"The people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth." —Jonah 3:5

Before the Great Jubilee, Pope St. John Paul II prophesied that the Lord wanted to bring about “manifold conversions” in the year 2000 (Toward the Third Millennium, 14). Today, the Lord also intends to quickly bring about amazing conversions in great numbers. In our skeptical world, some people find this hard to believe. Nevertheless, we should look at the 120,000 people of wicked Nineveh who repented in one day (Jon 3:5; 4:11) or the eight million people converted in seven years through the ministry of Our Lady of Guadalupe. There were even greater harvests of souls in some African countries, China, and South Korea. Jesus bears fruit abundantly and more abundantly (see Jn 10:10).

Expect Jesus to manifest His divine love by converting, in a short time, millions or even billions of people. Jesus promised: “I — once I am lifted up from earth — will draw all men to Myself” (Jn 12:32). Be converted; be a witness for Jesus (Acts 1:8); be part of Jesus’ greatest works of salvation.

Prayer: Father, may I live and die to lead people to Jesus.

Promise: "She had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord's feet and listened to His words." —Lk 10:39

Praise: It was through praying the Rosary that Fr. Don received a greater outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us.

LISTENING TO EVERYBODY BUT...
"This is the word of the Lord that came to Jonah." —Jonah 1:1

Jonah is both strikingly similar and dissimilar to Jesus. Jonah and Jesus are the only two people in the Bible who fell asleep in a boat during a storm (Jon 1:5; Mk 4:38). Jonah’s storm was stopped by “sacrificing” him, throwing him overboard (see Jon 1:14-15). By Jesus’ sacrificial death on Calvary, the storms of sin and death were stopped for those who believe in Him. As Jonah spent three days in the belly of a fish (Jon 2:1), Jesus spent three days buried in the earth (Mt 12:40).

In contrast to these amazing similarities, Jonah was directly opposite to Jesus in other ways. Jonah fled from the will of God the Father; Jesus obeyed the Father. Jonah was guilty; Jesus was innocent. Jonah was vindictive; Jesus was and is forgiving and merciful.

Ironically, Jonah was, at least originally, more quantifiably successful than Jesus. All 120,000 Ninevites converted in one day when Jonah reluctantly said “Repent” (see Jon 3:5; 4:11). However, Jesus also repeatedly said and says “Repent,” but few listen to Him. The Ninevites will remark on this at Judgment Day: “For at the preaching of Jonah [we] reformed, but you have a greater than Jonah here” (Lk 11:32).

Listen to Jesus more than you listen to any person, government, boss, celebrity, superstar, or business. Repent!

Prayer: Father, enable me to repent totally and immediately.

Promise: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." —Lk 10:27

Praise: St. Bruno devoted his life to deep prayer and solitude in order to be one with God.

FOREST FIRES OF THE SPIRIT?
"How long, O Lord? I cry for help but You do not listen!" —Habakkuk 1:2

Many of us are praying and complaining, as did the prophet Habakkuk, that our prayers are not being answered, that God is not helping us, and that we cannot continue in this way much longer. One of God’s most frequent answers to this complaint is: “I remind you to stir into flame the gift” of the Holy Spirit (2 Tm 1:6).

We don’t need the circumstances outside us to change as much as those inside. We have grieved the Holy Spirit through our sins (Eph 4:30). We have quenched the Spirit by giving in to fears (1 Thes 5:19), although “the Spirit God has given us is no cowardly spirit” (2 Tm 1:7). We must repent and live our Baptisms (Acts 2:38). Then we will see the smoldering remains of our life in the Spirit blaze into a blast furnace or even a forest fire of life-changing grace and world-renewing love.

What the world needs is Christians fully alive in the Holy Spirit. We need a new Pentecost. We need Christians docile to the Holy Spirit. We need Marian Christians who will invite the Spirit into their lives by saying: “I am the servant of the Lord. May it be done to me as you say” (Lk 1:38). Stop complaining (see Phil 2:14). Stir into flame the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Lord, "increase our faith" (Lk 17:5).

Promise: "Guard the rich deposit of faith with the help of the Holy Spirit Who dwells within us." —2 Tm 1:14

Praise: Praise our risen Lord Jesus, Who holds "the keys of death and the nether world" (Rv 1:18).

THE DISASTER OF NOT LEARNING FROM DISASTER
"He Who has brought disaster upon you will, in saving you, bring you back enduring joy." —Baruch 4:29

When disaster strikes, some may wonder: “Why did God let this happen to me?” One possible answer to this question is: disaster has befallen us because we, our family, or our nation have “angered God” by falling into the sin of idolatry (Bar 4:6-7). We have made something more important to us than God. If so, we can repent and do something about the cause of the problem rather than take the role of victim and blame other people for our problems.

Disaster can be a call to repentance (see Lk 13:3, 5) and commitment to the Lord. God can change the worst disasters into “enduring joy” (Bar 4:29) if we “turn now ten times the more to seek Him” (Bar 4:28). After a disaster, we are often naturally traumatized and spiritually paralyzed. However, as sin increases, grace increases all the more (Rm 5:20). After a disaster, we should “seize” the grace of the moment and turn to the Lord with ten times greater zeal. We must redeem the time and “make the most of the present opportunity, for these are evil days” (Eph 5:16). When we don’t learn from disaster, we set the stage for the next disaster. “Turn now ten times the more to seek” the Lord (Bar 4:28). God promises: “I will remove disaster from among you” (Zep 3:18).

Prayer: Father, may I not take the role of victim but of victor.

Promise: "Do not rejoice so much in the fact that the devils are subject to you as that your names are inscribed in heaven." —Lk 10:20

Praise: St. Francis turned the disaster of a Church in need of deep restoration into a glorious act of faith and obedience by throwing his energy into seeking the Lord and serving Him.

REPENT! - One Bread, One Body, 10/03/2025

REPENT!
"We, with our kings and rulers and priests and prophets, and with our fathers, have sinned in the Lord's sight and disobeyed Him." —Baruch 1:16-18

Although Jesus was free from sin (Heb 4:15), He began His public ministry by receiving St. John’s baptism of repentance (see Mk 1:4, 9). Jesus’ initial and foundational message was: “Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mk 1:15, RSV-CE). Jesus expected His miracles to lead people to repent. He declared: “It will go ill with you, Chorazin! And just as ill with you, Bethsaida! If the miracles worked in your midst had occurred in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have reformed in sackcloth and ashes” (Lk 10:13). Jesus told parables about the heavenly joy which comes from repentance (Lk 15:7, 10). Jesus lived and died calling us to repentance. At the first Christian Pentecost, the Church, on its birthday, embraced the message of repentance. When Peter was asked: “What are we to do?” (Acts 2:37), he answered: “Repent, and be baptized” (Acts 2:38, RSV-CE).

May we likewise grasp the basic message of Christ. May we repent, confess our sins, and accept Jesus as our Savior and Lord. May we also be ministers of reconciliation and invite others to repent (2 Cor 5:18; see also Mt 7:5). May we share in the joy of heaven over one sinner who repents (Lk 15:7). May the blood Jesus shed and the death Jesus died to free us from our sins not be “in vain” (1 Cor 15:2). Let us be a people of repentance, salvation, freedom, reconciliation, joy, and love.

Prayer: Father, baptize me, immerse me in repentance.

Promise: "He who hears you, hears Me. He who rejects you, rejects Me. And he who rejects Me, rejects Him Who sent Me." —Lk 10:16

Praise: Just hearing a friend mention her desire to receive the Sacrament of Penance was enough to inspire Diane to do the same.

ANGEL FOOD
"Their angels in heaven constantly behold My heavenly Father's face." —Matthew 18:10

The Scriptures tell us to take care not to rebel against our guardian angels (Ex 23:21). Most of us don’t think we’re guilty of rebelling because we’ve hardly thought of our guardian angels. Possibly that is why the Scriptures tell us to “be attentive” to the angel that guards us (Ex 23:21). Ignoring our guardian angels may be a subtle way of rebelling against them. No wonder our enemy, the devil, seems to get the best of us, although God promised we would have the victory (Ex 23:22), for that promise is conditional on our heeding the voice of our angels.

Let’s not give angels the “silent treatment” by disregarding them and by ignoring God’s Word about them. They attend to us and never forget us. Jesus warns us not to despise the little ones, that is, Christians, saying: “I assure you, their angels in heaven constantly behold My heavenly Father’s face” (Mt 18:10).

We have all had people ignore us, so we know what angels experience. Just because angels are invisible is no reason to ignore them. Many of the best things in life are invisible. We have faith by which we operate in the invisible dimension. Faith is “conviction about things we do not see” (Heb 11:1). With the eyes of faith, be attentive to your angel. This will help you love Jesus.

Prayer: Father, increase my faith so I don't miss out on the things that matter most in life.

Promise: "Whoever makes himself lowly, becoming like this child, is of greatest importance in that heavenly reign. Whoever welcomes one such child for My sake welcomes Me." —Mt 18:4-5

Praise: Praise be to the Triune God, Who has given us each an angel to be "the custodian of [our] lives" (Bar 6:6, NAB).
