NO VACANCY
"If you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the evil deeds of the body, you will live." —Romans 8:13

To follow Christ, we must deny ourselves (Lk 9:23) and crucify our flesh with its passions and desires (Gal 5:24). We must discipline our bodies so as to master them (1 Cor 9:27). This seems to call for great will power. Nonetheless, overcoming our self-centered flesh is not done by our power or might but by the Holy Spirit (Zec 4:6). We “put to death the evil deeds of the body” not by will power but by Spirit-power (Rm 8:13). “The flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh; the two are directly opposed” (Gal 5:17).

The Spirit strongly opposes our pleasure-seeking desires. Thus, if we “live in accord with the Spirit,” we “will not yield to the cravings of the flesh” (Gal 5:16). For example, how did the flesh get us to give up our prayer time for the last two days? We did not make an act of the will to reject prayer, but we merely didn’t find time to pray. So how would we give up overuse of our phones, TV, alcohol, caffeine, gossip, etc.? We do this by choosing the things of the Spirit and other things thereby get pushed out of our lives. The desires of the flesh breed in a vacuum, in emptiness. In a Spirit-filled life, there’s no vacancy for the flesh.

Prayer: Father, I'm busy and cluttered, but I'm not filled. Fill every aspect of my life with the Holy Spirit.

Promise: Should not this daughter of Abraham here who has been in the bondage of Satan for eighteen years have been released from her shackles on the sabbath?" —Lk 13:16

Praise: Out of love for Jesus, Charlie decided to give up cigarettes for Lent. Out of love for Charlie, Jesus gave him the grace to give up smoking permanently.

ALL POURED OUT
"I for my part am already being poured out like a libation." —2 Timothy 4:6

St. Paul, near the end of his life, said that he was “being poured out like a libation” (2 Tm 4:6). A libation is the act of pouring a liquid offering onto the ground, usually in a religious ceremony. The act of libation seems like a waste of good oil or wine (see Gn 35:14; Lv 23:13). Similarly, to those without faith, it seems a misuse of talent to spend one’s life serving the Lord. But to those with faith, this is not a waste but a libation, a life poured out in service to God.

This is how God relates to us. He pours out the Holy Spirit on us (Rm 5:5), whether or not we bother to receive it. He pours out the rain on the just and the unjust (Mt 5:45). The crucified Jesus did not hold back any drops of His blood.

In God’s service, we humbly empty ourselves (Phil 2:7). We are called to pour it all out, to empty ourselves, like a libation (see Phil 2:17). There’s nothing left in the chalice once the libation is poured out.

Imitate Jesus. Pour yourself out. Offer yourself fully to Him. Hold nothing back. Be poured out like a libation to the Lord (2 Tm 4:6).

Prayer: Father, I pour out my life for You. I trust You to fill me up again.

Promise: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in spirit He saves." —Ps 34:19

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, Divine Logos, for watering the earth with Your all-powerful Word (Is 55:10-11).

THE FRUIT OF LOVE
"He came out looking for fruit." —Luke 13:6

Jesus commands us to bear the fruit of holiness and evangelization, or we will be “cut down” (Lk 13:9) and “thrown in the fire and burnt” (Jn 15:6). In other words, we can potentially go to hell for not living and sharing the faith.

Jesus is so strict about this because He is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16) and therefore wants all people to be saved (1 Tm 2:4) from sin, death, and hell by believing in Him. Because of sin, the whole world is under condemnation to fear, slavery, self-deception, guilt, self-hatred, anger, and violence. Jesus, in His love, has died on the cross and risen from the dead to save us from this terrifying condemnation. Then, He made us missionaries and messengers of this Good News. In His love, He must insist that we give the following message to a condemned world: “There is no condemnation now for those who are in Christ Jesus. The law of the Spirit, the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, has freed you from the law of sin and death” (Rm 8:1-2).

If we love God and other people, we will be missionaries. If we do not love, we are “among the living dead” (1 Jn 3:14). Love, and bear the fruit of evangelization.

Prayer: Father, in love may I bear constant, abundant fruit (see Jn 15:5).

Promise: "If the Spirit of Him Who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, then He Who raised Christ from the dead will bring your mortal bodies to life also, through His Spirit dwelling in you." —Rm 8:11

SPRINGTIME IN OCTOBER
"Why can you not interpret the present time?" —Luke 12:56

Most of the time it’s possible to predict the weather. Jesus claimed it was also possible to interpret the signs of the times (Lk 12:56). What are the signs of our times? What time is it spiritually?

Pope St. John Paul II prophesied it is early “springtime” for the Church (Mission of the Redeemer, 86). This means we have weathered a long, cold spiritual winter. Some have spiritually died during this winter; others are starving, sick, or weakened. We must reach out to resurrect, nourish, and heal our Christian brothers and sisters. We should also tell them the good news that, although early spring sometimes looks like winter, it is still spring. We have the certain hope of new life. “For see, the winter is past, the rains are over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of pruning the vines has come, and the song of the dove is heard in our land” (Sg 2:11-12).

Although we may be getting ready for winter in the calendar year, winter is over in the spiritual calendar. The dove, the Holy Spirit, is singing a new song of new life in our land. Come, Holy Spirit of springtime!

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach me to read the signs of the times.

Promise: "Who can free me from this body under the power of death? All praise to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!" —Rm 7:24-25

DIVIDING IN ORDER TO UNITE
"I have come for division." —Luke 12:51

Christ gathers. He died “to gather into one all the dispersed children of God” (Jn 11:52). Though He came to gather and unite, Jesus said that He came to cause division in families in the sense that He shines His light of truth on each family member (Lk 12:52-53). In their free will, some family members have chosen not to listen to the voice of truth.

Satan divides; his purpose is to cause disunity. Satan does everything in his power to divide and isolate. This is as Jesus said: “I see an enemy’s hand in this” (Mt 13:28). After sowing disunity and dissension (see Mt 13:25), the evil one insolently dares to blame the problems on the Lord, Who is the One working to gather and unite.

So when Jesus says “I have come for division,” He is working to first divide family members from their attachment to evil. That foundational work must be done before the actual uniting and building work can begin. Jesus, the Living Word, “divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow” (Heb 4:12). He does surgery upon each person, judging “the reflections and thoughts of the heart” (Heb 4:12), much like a surgeon divides cancer cells from healthy cells, to remove the cancer from the person’s body.

Assist the Lord in His work of gathering and uniting. Allow Him to divide and detach you from any attachments which divide you from union with God.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I surrender completely to You. Do in me whatever You must so You can do through me whatever You will.

Promise: "Now that you are freed from sin and have become slaves of God, your benefit is sanctification as you tend toward eternal life." —Rm 6:22

Praise: For several decades, St. John of Capistrano traveled many miles through Central Europe, preaching missions and renewing devotion in an area devastated by the plague.

LOVE TO WAIT
"That servant is fortunate whom his master finds busy when he returns." —Luke 12:43

St. Peter was given the keys of the kingdom of heaven (Mt 16:19). He saw the risen Lord on the day Jesus rose from the dead. Peter was even warned several times to be vigilant and faithful in his mission because Jesus, his Master, might take His time coming back (Lk 12:45; Mt 25:5, 19). Though Peter was given much (Lk 12:48), he couldn’t wait a few weeks for Jesus. So shortly after Jesus’ Resurrection, Peter went back to work in his commercial fishing boat (Jn 21:3).

In today’s Gospel, Jesus warned Peter that the servant “who knew his master’s wishes but did not prepare to fulfill them” would “get a severe beating” (Lk 12:47). Yet when Jesus returned to check on His servant Peter, He didn’t give him that beating. Instead, Jesus gave Peter a miraculous catch of fish and cooked breakfast for him (Jn 21:6, 13). This time, Jesus had no teaching or parable for Peter. He simply asked Peter: “Do you love Me?” (Jn 21:15)

Waiting a few weeks, a few months, or even a few years for Jesus to come along won’t be a problem if we love Him enough. If we love Jesus, we will be immersed in dispensing the Word of God to His lambs in our midst (Jn 21:15; Lk 12:42). If we love Jesus, we won’t misuse the gifts and privileges God has given us on our own pleasures (cf Lk 12:45ff). Vigilance and waiting come naturally to those in love (Sg 3:1-3; 5:2). “The love of Christ impels us” (2 Cor 5:14) to spread the Word of God. Jesus asks each of us: “Do you love Me?”

Prayer: Father, pour out Your love in my heart through the Holy Spirit (Rm 5:5) so that I may wait in joyful hope.

Promise: "Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth." —Ps 124:8
