THE "REST" OF THE STORY

"Your souls will find rest." —Matthew 11:29

We disciples labor under the yoke of Jesus (Mt 11:30; Lk 9:23). Jesus
therefore calls us to rest in Him (Mt 11:29), yet even that demands effort
on our part. Each day we have to "strive to enter into that rest" (Heb
4:11). Mysteriously, disciples often rest better when they are most
diligent.

There's a balance to entering Jesus' rest. We can't strive too hard, for
our efforts alone are futile (Is 26:17-18). We must let God's rest be done
unto us (Lk 1:38). We yield to His grace, but avoid laziness, since we
must cooperate with God's grace by accepting Jesus' yoke and bearing His
burden (Mt 11:30).

Jesus Himself had no place to rest His head (Lk 9:58). This probably
refers to more than a bed. Jesus also had no place to Himself. His "place"
was constant interruptions, a lack of privacy, a life on the move, etc.
Like Jesus, we embrace our cross of fatigue and weariness. Amid our
fatigue, we have a fountain of life and rest which never runs dry. That
"rest" is not found by those who take shortcuts or evade the cross. It's
found by those who keep walking the path of Calvary, push through the
cross, and discover that, in the place where He was crucified, there is a
garden (Jn 19:41). In that garden, found only at the foot of the cross, is
found the "rest" and the strength to endure.

St. Augustine said: "Our hearts are restless, O Lord, until they rest in
Thee." "Come to" Jesus (Mt 11:28). Enter into His rest.

Prayer: Jesus, help me not to rest when I should be serving You (Mt
26:43-45) or to work when I should be resting in You (Ps 127:2; Ex 31:15).
Only in You "is my soul at rest" (Ps 62:1).

Promise: "My yoke is easy and My burden light." —Mt 11:30

Praise: David always felt needy, somehow missing what he needed but not
knowing what it was, until he found completeness in the Lord.

THE SPIRIT OR DARKNESS?

"Father, Lord of heaven and earth, to You I offer praise; for what You
have hidden from the learned and the clever You have revealed to the
merest children." —Matthew 11:25

Jesus rejoiced that His Father had hidden certain things "from the learned
and the clever." This does not mean that learning, that is, education, is
useless or harmful, but that it is limited. God's revelation transcends
the human mind. Therefore, "trust in the Lord with all your heart, on your
own intelligence rely not" (Prv 3:5).

Only by the Holy Spirit can we know "what lies at the depths of God" (1
Cor 2:11). Without the movement of the Holy Spirit, the most intelligent
and educated people in the world are doomed to ignorance and even
confusion, self-deception, and darkness. Therefore, we must cry out for
the Holy Spirit to instruct us in everything, remind us of all that Jesus
told us (Jn 14:26), and guide us to all truth (Jn 16:13), especially as He
speaks through the teachings of the Church and her Bible. The Spirit will
not only put ideas in our heads but words in our mouths (see Mt 10:20; 1
Cor 2:13). In the Spirit, we will hear the tiny, whispering sound of the
Father's voice (see 1 Kgs 19:12). "A voice shall sound in your ears: 'This
is the way; walk in it,' when you would turn to the right or to the left"
(Is 30:21).

Repent of your sins, go to Confession, give your life to Jesus. Ask for a
renewal of your Confirmation (see 2 Tm 1:6-7). Receive the Holy Spirit and
God's revelation. Receive truth and light.

Prayer: Father, I accept Your grace to stifle my carnal desires and be
stirred up in the Spirit (see Gal 5:17).

Promise: "Judgment shall again be with justice, and all the upright of
heart shall follow it." —Ps 94:15

Praise: The Carmelites purchased a seminary and prayed fervently for
vocations. When enrollments dried up, they were forced to sell it to a
Protestant group who used the building as a seminary. This seminary has
produced over fifty Protestant ministers who have since converted to
Catholicism.

THE MIRACLE OF REPENTANCE

"If the miracles worked in you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they
would have reformed in sackcloth and ashes long ago." —Matthew 11:21

"When much has been given a man, much will be required of him. More will
be asked of a man to whom more has been entrusted" (Lk 12:48). Jesus
applies this Biblical principle to towns in which He did miracles (see Mt
11:20). If more miracles have been done in our towns, more is expected of
us.

We as the new covenant have seen countless people become new creations,
born again, in the waters of baptism. Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum
saw nothing as miraculous as that. Jesus said it would be that way when He
promised: "I solemnly assure you, the man who has faith in Me will do the
works I do, and greater far than these" (Jn 14:12). The miracle-towns of
Jesus' time also never saw the miracle of people filled with the Holy
Spirit. "There was, of course, no Spirit as yet, since Jesus had not yet
been glorified" (Jn 7:39). Moreover, no one ever imagined the miracle of
Jesus giving Himself to us by turning bread and wine into His body and
blood. In addition to these miracles, we have witnessed in the new
covenant even more healings, deliverances, signs, and wonders than in the
old covenant. We live in the presence of daily, frequent, awesome
miracles. Because of this, we have a great responsibility to repent.

Prayer: Father, as You extend "Your hand in cures and signs and wonders,"
may we repent (see Acts 4:30).

Promise: "Unless your faith is firm you shall not be firm!" —Is 7:9

Praise: St. Bonaventure got his nickname, meaning "good fortune," from a
vision of his future by St. Francis of Assisi. He built his life on Jesus
through his simplicity, poverty, and hard work.

SIN-BLIND

"Your hands are full of blood! Wash yourselves clean!" —Isaiah 1:15-16

By its nature, sin perpetuates itself by making us insensitive or blind to
sin. Consequently, the more we sin, the more unaware we become of our
desperate need to repent. This sin-blindness is more difficult to remove
than physical blindness. Only God and those speaking in God's name, that
is, the prophets, have the power to break through sin-blindness.

The prophet Isaiah tried to shock the people into a renewed sense of sin
by calling them "princes of Sodom" and "people of Gomorrah" (Is 1:10).
This is like calling the people of today Nazis or terrorists. Isaiah then
announced that God was disgusted with the Israelites' sacrifices, worship
services, and prayers (see Is 1:11-15). Isaiah's outrageous comments were
intended to break through the Israelites' sin-blindness. However, Isaiah's
prophecies were not successful at the time.

Moses prophesied that there would some day come the ultimate Prophet (Dt
18:15; Acts 3:22), Who would break through sin-blindness. Jesus is this
Prophet. He is also Lord and God. His words and the words of His body, the
Church, are "spirit and life" (Jn 6:63). These words lay bare the secrets
of our hearts (see 1 Cor 14:25; Lk 2:35). They break through sin-blindness
and lead us to repentance. Listen to Jesus and His body, the Church, or
you will die blinded by and to sin.

Prayer: Father, through the prophetic word, free me from the denial and
self-deception of sin (see Lk 16:31).

Promise: "He who seeks only himself brings himself to ruin, whereas he who
brings himself to nought for Me discovers who he is." —Mt 10:39

Praise: Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha chose to join the Church and reject the
warring behavior of her parents' tribes.

Again, the Church in her wisdom, gives us a feast day to
honor our heavenly mother Mary, the feast of "Our Lady of Mt. Carmel".

Mary adored You as child, and as a man, that she could see
and touch.

We have the same privledge, we can see You in Your sacred
Body and Blood, we can touch You in the bread of life.

You, Christ, are the food of life, and receiving You constantly
draws us to a further commitment to love others, as we try in
our human condition to love You.

Feed us the bread of life, and give us love to live life. Amen and Amen

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

fertileand fruitful, giving seed to him who sows and bread to
him who eats, so shall My word be that goes forth from My
mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but shall do My will,
achieving the end for which I sent it." —Isaiah 55:10-11

Farmers periodically take samples of their ground to have
them tested. If your spiritual ground was tested now, would you be:

an infertile footpath? (Mt 13:4)
infertile rocky ground? (Mt 13:5)
fertile but unfruitful ground overgrown with thorns? (Mt 13:7)
fertile, fruitful ground bearing a 30-fold harvest? (Mt 13:8)
fertile, fruitful ground bearing a 60-fold harvest? (Mt 13:8)
fertile, fruitful ground bearing a 100-fold harvest? (Mt 13:8)

When a farmer finds from testing that his soil is deficient, he
does not ignore the fact but takes measures to improve the
condition of his ground. This should also be true spiritually. If
you are an infertile footpath or rocky ground, repent and go to
Confession as soon as possible. If you are fertile but unfruitful,
ask the Holy Spirit to convict you of your thorny compromise
with the ways the of world (Jn 16:8). If you want to increase
from a 30-fold harvest to 60-fold or 100-fold, you need
community life and daily Bible study.

In good ground, you can grow almost anything worth growing.
In bad ground, you can hardly grow anything. The condition
of the ground is critical. Recognize the condition of your
ground and improve it.

a situation where i care for emotially abusive parents! they
are old and needy but also very very mean- -meanest about
my lower income which stems from man hours helping them
and not making money. no one else wants to help them, but
turning them over to a nursing home is unthinkable because
of the low-grade care and possibility for euthanasia. please
pray for their conversation as well as for extra helping hands
so that i won't have to do this for ten more years. for God to
send me a good husband and get me a happy family! And for
a windfall of money so I can pay debts incurred during a time
of disability. for the reform of the Church and for the
sanctification of the Holy Father. For an end to all liturgical
abuses and doctrinal error.

I come before you once more asking for prayer and help I
have no family to go to no one will help us I have done all I
know to do to get back on my feet I have pray but , nothing
seem to work, I am a simgle mother that everyone have
turn their back on I did get a little help from the red cross
but that said they can not help me anymore they said a lot
of peple need help and is limited on hoe much they can do,
we are homeless lost my home three month ago I kid you
not right after I lost my job, Have another job making very
little money.Please have a heart and pray for me and help
any way you can we are out on the streets with very little
money and no place to call home all I have is a old car and
a laptop to apply for jobs on it seen a god as turn his back
on us, pray for us and offer some advice I sure could use a
friend,all I have is my family.please e-mail me back with
support or with what ever you can offer I am very desperate

discouraged about his job and doesn't know whether or not

improve and that his dad would give him and his brother a
chance at running the business and that his father would
become a better mentor. Please pray that the influences that

LIP BALM

"Now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is removed, your sin
purged." —Isaiah 6:7

A seraph touched Isaiah's lips with a hot ember from the heavenly altar
(Is 6:6). The seraph said: "Now that this has touched your lips, your
wickedness is removed, your sin purged" (Is 6:7). Something from heaven
touched Isaiah's lips, and his lips were then opened to speak the
prophetic word of God.

How blessed we are, for something sent from heaven touches our lips also —
the Eucharist, the body of Christ (Jn 6:32-33; Catechism, 1402). Like
Isaiah's ember, the Eucharist touches our lips, removes our wickedness,
and purges our sin. Jesus indicated this sin-purging capability, telling
us, "This is My blood, the blood of the covenant, to be poured out in
behalf of many for the forgiveness of sin" (Mt 26:28; see also Catechism,
1846).

The Church teaches: "The Eucharist cannot unite us to Christ without at
the same time cleansing us from past sins and preserving us from future
sins" (Catechism, 1393), especially "from future mortal sins" (Catechism,
1395). "As bodily nourishment restores lost strength, so the Eucharist
strengthens our charity, which tends to be weakened in daily life; and
this living charity wipes away venial sins" (Catechism, 1394). However,
"the Eucharist is not ordered to the forgiveness of mortal sins — that is
proper to the sacrament of Reconciliation" (Catechism, 1395).

How could anyone not want to receive the Eucharist frequently, daily if
possible? Let Jesus touch your lips and life.

Prayer: Jesus, I dedicate the rest of my life to Your eucharistic body and
blood. May I lead thousands into a Eucharistic lifestyle.

Promise: "Whoever acknowledges Me before men I will acknowledge before My
Father in heaven." —Mt 10:32
