PRAYING TO SUFFER

"You yourself shall be pierced with a sword — so that the thoughts of many
hearts may be laid bare." —Luke 2:35

We have a special prayer (a sequence) for today's feast day honoring Mary,
the Sorrowful Mother. In this prayer, we ask to be pierced through our
hearts with each wound of Jesus crucified. We also ask to mingle tears
with Mary and share the grief she had at the foot of the cross (see Jn
19:25). We seek to bear in our bodies the death of Jesus even to our last
breath (see 2 Cor 4:10). Finally, we again ask to be wounded with every
one of Jesus' wounds until we are overwhelmed and faint. This is a prayer
few people want to pray, but the Lord calls us to pray it from our hearts.

With Mary, we should pray to know how to suffer by being formed into the
pattern of Jesus' death (Phil 3:10). We must desire to suffer with Jesus
rather than have pleasure without Him. We consider it a privilege not only
to believe in Him but to suffer for Him (Phil 1:29). We find joy in the
sufferings we endure for the Church. When we suffer innocently and love
our enemies, we suffer redemptively and make up in our own bodies what is
lacking in Christ's sufferings (Col 1:24). This proves that the Holy
Spirit is resting on us (1 Pt 4:14).

Mary, Mother of Sorrows, pray for us to pray for redemptive suffering.

Prayer: Father, may I consider it a privilege to suffer for You.

Promise: "Son though He was, He learned obedience from what He suffered;
and when perfected, He became the Source of eternal salvation for all who
obey Him." —Heb 5:8-9

Praise: Mary earned the title Our Lady of Sorrows by bearing up under
incredible sorrows. Mary's "Yes" to earthly sorrow has given her eternal
honor as the Queen of Heaven and Earth.

Jesus, through out our lives, we seem to go from one
difficulty to the next.

Help us to realize that we should look to Your Cross,
and see real victory.

Lord, not as man understands victory, but that You
triumphed through death, and therefore, gave us life.

Help us to all carry our crosses and offer them to You,
so that others will be graced and saved.

Let us truly realize that "all things work to good for
those who love You".

Let us be prayer warriors for those who are struggling
to let go and let You truly be the Lord of their lives.
Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

Sunday "CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST" (Gal 2:19)

Jesus healed a man and then forbade him to tell people
He had done the healing (Mk 1:44). Jesus realized people
would misunderstand His true identity and label Him as
merely a Healer. Jesus multiplied loaves and fishes to feed
the multitudes. When He realized people only partially
grasped His true identity, calling Him a Prophet and King
(Jn 6:14-15), he had to leave that area.

Jesus was arrested, manhandled, and tried before the
Sanhedrin. Jesus stood as an accused Prisoner before
judges who were determined to find a way to condemn
Him to death. In that most ironic scenario, Jesus the
condemned proclaimed His true identity. When asked
if He was the "Messiah, the Son of the Blessed
One...Jesus answered, 'I am' " (Mk 14:61-62). As He
was lifted up on His cross, a sign above His head
proclaimed His true identity for the world to see: "Jesus
the Nazorean the King of the Jews" (Jn 19:19). Jesus
wouldn't let His true identity be revealed apart from the
context of His crucified suffering. He is the Crucified.
He is the great I AM (Ex 3:14; Mk 14:62).

With St. Paul, say: "I have been crucified with Christ,
and the life I live now is not my own; Christ is living in
me. I still live my human life, but it is a life of faith in
the Son of God" (Gal 2:19-20). We are Christians. We
receive our identity in Jesus. Live a crucified,
triumphant life in Christ. Take up your cross (Lk 9:23).

My sister was the driver of the truck that killed the
18-month-old little girl in Mt. Carmel, Indiana this past
Friday afternoon. The accident has really taken a toll
on both families involved. Just a horrible accident on
slick roads. The car was coming toward my sister,
Diane, sideways. She was attempting to avoid hitting
the car, but it happened anyway. Prayers are needed
for both Diane and the family of the little girl. Diane
came through with cuts and bruises, but the emotional
scar of finding the baby still in her car seat will stay
with her forever. The mother of the little girl, from what
we have heard, is still at U.C.

MISSION AND EVANGELIZATION

"ABSOLUTE PRIORITY"
The missionary mandate continues to be an absolute priority
for all baptized persons who are called to be "servants and
apostles of Christ Jesus" at the beginning of this millennium.

"PRESSING AND URGENT"
St. Paul had understood well that only in Christ can humanity
find redemption and hope. Therefore, he perceived that the
mission was pressing and urgent to "proclaim the promise
of life in Christ Jesus" (2 Tm 1;1), "our hope" (1 Tm 1:1), so
that all peoples could be co-heirs and co-partners in the
promise through the Gospel (cf. Eph 3:6).

"URGENT DUTY"
It is ... an urgent duty for everyone to proclaim Christ and

DEMONIC WORSHIP

"I am telling you, whom I love, to shun the worship of idols." —1
Corinthians 10:14

When we receive Communion and partake of the one loaf, "we, many though we
are, are one body" (1 Cor 10:17). We share in the body and blood of Christ
(1 Cor 10:16). However, when we immerse ourselves in worldly activities,
we may be involved in the worship of idols and commune with the world. We
may unknowingly have "become sharers with demons" (1 Cor 10:20).

Worship is simply abandoning ourselves to something or to someone. Today's
idol worship is often done at parties, concerts, sporting events, bars,
motels, or malls. When we party with abandon, idolize an entertainer or
athlete, have sinful sexual relations (see Eph 5:5), or invest an
inappropriate amount of time and/or money into something, we may be
worshipping idols, having communion with them, and unknowingly becoming
sharers with demons.

"You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and also the cup of demons. You
cannot partake of the table of the Lord and likewise the table of demons.
Do we mean to provoke the Lord to jealous anger? Surely we are not
stronger than He!" (1 Cor 10:21-22) "Worship God alone!" (Rv 22:9)

Prayer: Father, deliver me from any unknowing involvement in the occult.

Promise: "A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart." —Lk
6:45

Praise: St. John Chrysostom was exiled more than once from his diocese,
but remained in contact with, and faithful to, the pope. He shunned
worldly idols by bringing reform to the corrupt court, clergy, and people.

"EXISTING TO EVANGELIZE"

"I made myself the slave of all so as to win over as many as possible." —1
Corinthians 9:19

How much do you want people to give their lives to Christ? Would you be
"the slave of all so as to win over as many as possible"? Would you make
yourself "all things to all men in order to save at least some of them"?
(1 Cor 9:22) Are you running the race and fighting the fight? (1 Cor 9:26;
2 Tm 4:7) Would you discipline and master your body (1 Cor 9:27) to make
it an instrument of justice (Rm 6:13) in leading people to Christ?

The Lord will give us such a strong desire to lead people to Him that we
will realize we exist to evangelize (On Evangelization, 14, Pope Paul VI).
Like Paul, we will be "under compulsion" to preach the gospel and ruined
if we don't (1 Cor 9:16). Like Jesus, we "have come to light a fire on the
earth" (Lk 12:49). How we "wish the blaze were ignited!" (Lk 12:49)

Ask the Holy Spirit to come to you. Ask for a new Pentecost. Ask for the
desires of God's heart to be fulfilled as His desires become the desires
of your heart. Exist to evangelize.

Prayer: Jesus, may I live and die to be Your witness (see Acts 1:8).

Promise: "Hypocrite, remove the plank from your own eye first; then you
will see clearly enough to remove the speck from your brother's eye." —Lk
6:42

Praise: "I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say"
(Lk 1:38).

my hero of faith

One of my heroes of faith is George Mueller (1805-1898). One day he looked
down the streets of Bristol in England and saw hundreds of homeless
children. He was so moved with compassion for them, he knew that something
had to be done. Although he only had a few pence in his pocket he decided to
start an orphanage. Over 60 years, George Mueller took care of over 10,024
orphans.

George Mueller started many orphanages without ever making requests for
financial support, nor did he ever get into debt. (I must confess that is a
challenge to us at Philo and to all our Associates!). He simply trusted God
to do the work and keep it going. On more than one occasion God provided in
a miraculous way. Once they had no food to feed the orphans and yet George
gathered all the orphans around the table and began to thank the Lord for
the food. At the end of the prayer, he said, "Amen", and that's when they
heard a knock at the door. A truck with milk and food had broken down on the
road and all the milk and food was going to go off, so the driver gave it to
the orphans. Do we have that kind of faith, where we can take all our
problems and trust to the Lord and ask Him to take care of them? When asked
how much time he spent in prayer, George Mueller's reply was, "Hours every
day. But I live in the spirit of prayer. I pray as I walk and when I lie
down and when I arise. And the answers are always coming."

George Mueller was known for his believing prayer. A Christian steamship
captain, a contemporary of George Mueller, told of an experience involving
George's faith. While sailing off the coast of Newfoundland in extremely
heavy fog, George came to him and said, "Captain, I need to tell you that I
must be in Quebec on Saturday afternoon." The captain told him that it was
simply not possible, due to the weather conditions. George said, "Very well,
if your ship cannot take me, God will find some other way, for I have never
missed an engagement in fifty-seven years. Let's go down to the chartroom to
pray."

Again, the captain protested, saying, "Mr. Mueller, do you realise how dense
the fog is?" "No," replied George, "my eye is not on the dense fog but on
the living God, who controls every circumstance of my life." The captain
then told how George knelt down and prayed one of the simplest prayers he'd
ever heard. When he finished, the captain himself started to pray. But to
his surprise, George put his hand on the captain's shoulder and told him not
to pray. "First," he said, "you do not believe God will answer, and second,
I believe He has. Consequently, there is no need whatsoever for you to pray
about it. Captain, I have known my Lord for fifty-seven years, and there has
never been even a single day that I have failed to get an audience with the
King. Get up, Captain, and open the door, and you will see that the fog is
gone." The captain got up, opened the door, and sure enough, the fog was
gone. And George Mueller made his appointment for Saturday afternoon in
Quebec.

George kept a motto on his desk that brought comfort, strength, and
uplifting confidence to his heart. It read, "It matters to Him about you."
He believed that those words captured the meaning of 1 Peter 5:7 and he
rested his claim for divine help on that truth. He testified at the end of
his life that the Lord had never failed to supply all his needs.

George Mueller, speaking of the obstacles in the Christian's life, wrote, "I
say - and say it deliberately - trials, obstacles, difficulties, and
sometimes defeats, are the very food of faith. Be assured, if you walk with
Him and look to Him, and expect help from Him, He will never fail you."

George Mueller died on March 10th, 1898. Let's be inspired by his example of
faith and trust in God. Like George Mueller, we need to follow the advice we
read in 1 Peter 5:7: "Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares
about what happens to you."

POOR ME

"Blest are you poor; the reign of God is yours." —Luke 6:20

Luke presents the Beatitudes differently than does Matthew. In Luke, Jesus
teaches the Beatitudes while "coming down the mountain" (Lk 6:17). In
Matthew, Jesus teaches them "on the mountain" (Mt 5:1). Luke has four
beatitudes and four woes, while Matthew has eight beatitudes.

Luke stresses physical poverty much more than does Matthew. Luke says:
"Blest are you poor," and "blest are you who hunger" (Lk 6:20). Matthew,
however, talks about being "poor in spirit," and hungering and thirsting
for holiness (Mt 5:3, 6). Luke emphasizes physical poverty throughout his
Gospel. He alone mentions Jesus' birth in a manger, the Good Samaritan,
and the rich man and Lazarus. In his Beatitudes, Luke is repeating his
theme that we should not only help the poor but be the poor.

We must "incarnate" our service to God's poor; it must become flesh. "The
equal dignity of human persons requires the effort to reduce excessive
social and economic inequalities. It gives urgency to the elimination of
sinful inequalities. Solidarity...practices the sharing of spiritual goods
even more than material ones" (Catechism, 1947-1948).

We must identify with the poor as does Jesus (see 2 Cor 8:9).

Prayer: Father, may I be like Jesus and thereby be poor.

Promise: "The world as we know it is passing away." —1 Cor 7:31

Praise: Brother John put all his belongings into a single backpack to do
missionary work and be one of the poor in a third-world country.
