THE JOY OF JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH

"We hold that a man is justified by faith apart from observance of the
law." —Romans 3:28

Our justification, redemption, atonement, expiation, and salvation work
"through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe" (Rm 3:22). Therefore:
* "All depends on faith, everything is grace" (Rm 4:16).
* We should ask the Lord to give us a deeper faith in Him (Lk 17:5).
* We don't have to try to do the impossible by saving ourselves (Is
26:18; Ps 49:8).
* We are no longer under the curse of having to obey the Law without
the power to do it (Gal 3:10; Rm 7:18).
* The pressure's not on us, for His yoke is easy and His burden light
(Mt 11:30).
* We can't take credit for being saved. Our boasting is ruled out by
the law of faith (Rm 3:27).
* We must let God's salvation be done in our lives (see Lk 1:38),
although we don't have to do it ourselves.
* We should be forever thankful to the Lord for saving us.
* We should love people enough to tell them the good news of salvation.
* "Let us rejoice and be glad that He has saved us!" (Is 25:9)

"My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit finds joy in God
my Savior" (Lk 1:46).

Prayer: Father, may I tell at least one person each day the good news of
salvation in Christ.

Promise: "All men are now undeservedly justified by the gift of God,
through the redemption wrought in Christ Jesus." —Rm 3:24

Praise: It was the death of St. Teresa's mother that led Teresa to
discover her vocation at age twelve.

"ONE LIFE TO LIVE"

"God's kindness is an invitation to you to repent." —Romans 2:4

To those who have repented and totally given their lives to the Lord, to
"those who strive for glory, honor, and immortality by patiently doing
right" (Rm 2:7), the Lord gives eternal life (Rm 2:7). Eternal life
includes "glory, honor, and peace" (Rm 2:10).

Although we are so small in the universe and our time on earth is so
short, our lives have astounding and everlasting consequences. Therefore,
we must make the most of this moment in eternity by loving the Lord with
all our hearts. "What profit does he show who gains the whole world and
destroys himself in the process?" (Lk 9:25)

Let us lose our lives by giving them to Jesus. He says "to all: 'Whoever
wishes to be My follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each
day, and follow in My steps. Whoever would save his life will lose it, and
whoever loses his life for My sake will save it' " (Lk 9:23-24). Let us
accept Jesus as our Lord, Savior, and God on His terms. Let us choose
Jesus as our Life (Jn 14:6).

Prayer: Jesus, I am all Yours.

Promise: "Only in God is my soul at rest; from Him comes my salvation. He
only is my Rock and my Salvation, my Stronghold; I shall not be disturbed
at all." —Ps 62:2-3

Praise: Pope St. Callistus I kept the faith through the experiences of
being a slave, fugitive, prisoner, and free man.

ALL WASHED UP?

"All will be wiped clean for you." —Luke 11:41

A Pharisee was surprised that Jesus hadn't washed Himself before eating
dinner (Lk 11:38). The Pharisees had a complicated series of ablutions
they performed before dinner (Lk 11:38), including a ritualistic washing
of the fingers using a certain set of motions. Jesus obviously didn't
follow their formula.

Though Jesus hadn't washed before dinner, He surely had prayed before
dinner. Jesus prayed constantly, often rising early in the morning to pray
(Mk 1:35).

Many of us would be ashamed to appear in public without properly washing
ourselves. Yet would we be ashamed of the Gospel in public? (see Rm 1:16)

We wouldn't go to a meeting with our boss or a dinner with friends without
being all washed up. Would we likewise face a secular world without being
all prayed up?

What were the first five things you did this morning? Was one of them
washing? Was one of them praying? We too often skip the prayer, but rarely
do we skip the washing.

Which is more important?

Prayer: Jesus, You see my insides while the world sees my outside (Lk
11:40). May I care far more about pleasing You than pleasing the world.

Promise: "I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God leading
everyone who believes in it to salvation." —Rm 1:16

GREAT-ING

"You have a greater." —Luke 11:31, 32

Jesus is greater than Solomon, the wisest person on earth (Lk 11:31).
Jesus is greater than Jonah, who successfully led 120,000 Ninevites to
repentance in one day (Lk 11:32). Jesus is greater than all the wisest,
richest, most powerful, and most successful people in human history all
put together.

However, many Christians don't believe Jesus is greater and greatest. They
give "lip-service" to Jesus' supremacy, but deny it by their actions. For
example, how many people choose a little extra sleep, a cup of coffee, or
a little breakfast over receiving Jesus in daily Mass and Communion? How
many prefer TV to communicating with Jesus in prayer? Do we show that
Jesus is the greatest by how we spend our money? Our actions concerning
money, time, and lifestyle speak louder than our words. By our actions, we
often show a doubting world that we ourselves are doubtful about Jesus'
supremacy.

We proclaim that Jesus is greater and greatest by loving Him with all our
hearts, souls, minds, and strength (Lk 10:27). If we deny ourselves (Lk
9:23) and obey Jesus, we affirm that Jesus is greater than us. This is a
major statement because ultimately we are the pretenders to Jesus' throne.
If we accept Jesus as greater, we must realize that we are lesser. When we
want Jesus to increase, we must decrease (Jn 3:30). To rejoice in His
lordship, we must rejoice in our servanthood.

Prayer: Jesus, I put Your name above my name, bend my knee in submission
to You, and proclaim You as Lord (Phil 2:9-11).

Promise: "Through [Jesus] we have been favored with apostleship, that we
may spread His name and bring to obedient faith all the Gentiles, among
whom are you who have been called to belong to Jesus Christ." —Rm 1:5-6

Praise: James considers Jesus the CEO of his business while he sees
himself as an employee.

GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALE

"How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!" —Mark 10:23

"You cannot give yourself to God and money" (Mt 6:24). Although few admit
it, money is God's greatest competition, that thing which we are most
tempted to put ahead of God. Money is the means to pleasure and a life of
self-satisfaction. Money facilitates worship of self.

Consequently, many young rich men and women continue to walk sadly away
from Jesus (Mk 10:22). Like Judas, many commonly sell Jesus for a few
pieces of silver (Mt 26:15) or even for the petty pleasures that money can
buy. For example, Esau sold out for just a bowl of red soup (Gn 25:30-31).

"The love of money is the root of all evil" (1 Tm 6:10). It all comes down
to God or money, lifestyle, and self. We must consider "riches nothing in
comparison" with God (Wis 7:8) and consider God's word "more precious than
thousands of gold and silver pieces" (Ps 119:72). We must "put aside
everything to follow" Jesus (Mk 10:28).

Prayer: Jesus, I choose You over pleasure.

Promise: "God's word is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged
sword. It penetrates and divides soul and spirit." —Heb 4:12

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Who gave His all for the incomparable
treasure of our salvation. Alleluia!

CONTINUOUS, LASTING HAPPINESS

"A woman from the crowd called out, 'Blest is the womb that bore You and
the breasts that nursed You!' " —Luke 11:27

The woman from the crowd called out that Jesus' mother must be happy.
Jesus used the opportunity to proclaim that happiness is hearing and
keeping God's word (Lk 11:28). The psalmist said the same thing: Happy is
the one who "delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on His law day
and night" (Ps 1:1, 2). John the Evangelist also proclaimed: "Happy is the
man who reads this prophetic message, and happy are those who hear it and
heed what is written in it, for the appointed time is near!" (Rv 1:3)

This happiness that comes from hearing and living God's word is not the
"happiness" which the world gives (cf Jn 14:27). This happiness is beyond
understanding (cf Phil 4:7). It has nothing to do with circumstances, but
transcends them. Through God's word, we can be happy even under the worst
circumstances, and we cannot lose this happiness against our will (see Jn
16:22).

The prophet Jeremiah was happy because of finding God's word. He said:
"When I found Your words, I devoured them; they became my joy and the
happiness of my heart" (Jer 15:16). But Jeremiah also said: "I did not sit
celebrating in the circle of merrymakers; under the weight of Your hand I
sat alone because You filled me with indignation. Why is my pain
continuous, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed?" (Jer 15:17-18)
Jeremiah was lonely, filled with indignation, suffered continuous pain,
and had an incurable wound. Yet, he was miraculously, amazingly happy
through God's words. God will do the same for you.

Prayer: Father, give me a happiness which doesn't depend on circumstances
beyond my control.

Promise: "A fountain shall issue from the house of the Lord." —Jl 4:18

Praise: Prone to depression, Samantha turns to the Scriptures for joy that
lasts.
