FORGIVENESS IS... - One Bread, One Body, 3/14/2010

FORGIVENESS IS...

"While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him and was
deeply moved." —Luke 15:20

Some people think forgiveness means being nice to those who have offended
us. Forgiveness, however, is much more than that. It means actively
showing love and mercy to those who have mistreated us. Forgiveness is
given before our offenders apologize, and even if they never apologize or
stop mistreating us. Forgiveness is expressed affectionately. The father
of the prodigal son "ran out to meet him, threw his arms around his neck,
and kissed him" (Lk 15:20). Forgiveness means honoring our offenders by
giving them special gifts and throwing a party in their honor (Lk
15:22-23). Forgiveness is extending mercy, treating those who have
mistreated us much better than they deserve.

Forgiveness by God's standards is impossible by human power. "To err is
human, to forgive is divine." Because we're not divine, we can't do it.
However, Jesus is divine. He can forgive, and we can let it be done unto
us according to His word (Lk 1:38). In Jesus, we can forgive everyone who
has ever hurt us; we can be like the father of the prodigal son. We can
forgive by God's standards (Col 3:13). We can receive the miracle of
forgiveness, go forth as ministers of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18), and
transform an unforgiving and merciless world into the image and likeness
of Christ.

Prayer: Forgiving Father, in this Lent may I change from merely not hating
my enemies into loving them.

Promise: "This means that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.
The old order has passed away; now all is new!" —2 Cor 5:17

Praise: Praise You, Jesus, Mercy Incarnate. Praise You for forgiving us
even when we were Your enemies (Rm 5:10). I worship You forever.

BEYOND COMPARE

"The Pharisee with head unbowed prayed in this fashion: 'I give You
thanks, O God, that I am not like the rest of men.' " —Luke 18:11

The Pharisee compared himself with the tax collector. He fell into the sin
of pride, was not justified, and even deteriorated to the point of
"holding everyone else in contempt" (Lk 18:9).

Cain compared himself with Abel and became resentful and crestfallen (Gn
4:6). "Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him" (Gn 4:8), becoming
the first murderer.

Aaron and Miriam compared themselves to Moses. "So angry was the Lord
against them that when He departed, and the cloud withdrew from the tent,
there was Miriam, a snow-white leper!" (Nm 12:9-10)

Saul compared himself to David. "Saul was jealous of David. The next day
an evil spirit...came over Saul, and he raged in his house" (1 Sm
18:9-10). Saul tried to kill David, was eventually involved in the occult,
and finally committed suicide.

Some religious leaders compared themselves with Jesus. They became so
jealous they handed Jesus over to be crucified (Mt 27:18). They took part
in the worst murder ever.

The high priest and Sadducees compared themselves with the apostles. They
became so jealous they arrested the apostles, threw them into jail, and
threatened to kill them (Acts 5:17-18).

Comparing ourselves with others is a "no-win situation." It leads to
either pride or jealousy, which in turn leads to self-hatred. If we
believe our heavenly Father loves us, we have no need to compare ourselves
with others. Through Jesus and in the Spirit, be secure in your Father's
love.

Prayer: Abba...

Promise: "It is love that I desire, not sacrifice, and knowledge of God
rather than holocausts." —Hos 6:6

Praise: Andrew's lifestyle has reformed since he began confessing his
tendency to be competitive.

READ MY LIPS!

"If only..." —Psalm 81:14

When parents talk to their children, they sometimes feel they are talking
to a wall. Imagine how the Lord feels! God laments: "If only My people
would hear Me..." (Ps 81:14). Let us listen to the Lord speak:
* "If My people, upon whom My name has been pronounced, humble
themselves and pray, and seek My presence and turn from their evil ways, I
will hear them from heaven and pardon their sins and revive their land" (2
Chr 7:14).
* "If only My people would hear Me, and...walk in My ways...I would
feed [them] with the best of wheat, and with honey from the rock I would
fill them" (Ps 81:14, 17).
* "If, then, you truly heed My commandments which I enjoin on you
today, loving and serving the Lord, your God, with all your heart and all
your soul, I will give the seasonal rain to your land...Thus you may eat
your fill" (Dt 11:13-15).
* "Act on this word. If all you do is listen to it, you are deceiving
yourselves" (Jas 1:22).

The Lord tells us: "My sheep hear My voice...They follow Me. I give them
eternal life, and they shall never perish" (Jn 10:27-28). "Once you know
all these things, blest will you be if you put them into practice" (Jn
13:17). "Let him who has ears to hear Me, hear!" (Mk 4:23)

Prayer: Father, give me "ears open to obedience" (Ps 40:7).

Promise: "I will heal their defection, I will love them freely; for My
wrath is turned away from them." —Hos 14:5

Praise: Michael frequently draws upon experiences of his own fatherhood to
better understand the ways of God the Father.

"DO YOU RENOUNCE SATAN?"

"Some of them said, 'It is by Beelzebul, the prince of devils, that He
casts out devils.' " —Luke 11:15

Some people accused Jesus of driving out demons by Beelzebul, the prince
of demons. We may have sinned many times, but that's one sin we likely
have never committed. In our secularized society, many don't even believe
the devil exists. Consequently, they would not attribute any of Jesus'
works to the devil. Many are too ignorant or heretical to commit the sin
referred to in today's Gospel reading.

In a few short weeks, at every Catholic Mass in the whole world on Easter
Sunday, we will be asked the question: "Do you renounce Satan?" Those who
are so secularized as to deny or doubt the devil's existence or activity
will not be able to answer that question. Even those who acknowledge the
devil's existence may be hard pressed to renounce Satan, all his works,
and all his empty promises. When we are aware that Satan exists, we
probably know that he is aware of our renouncing him. Many, and Satan
especially, react to renunciation with retaliation. Therefore, we must be
protected before "picking a fight" with Satan by renouncing him. We must
repent of our sins and commit ourselves totally to Jesus. Then we are
under Jesus' protection and can renounce Satan. Prepare to renounce Satan.

Prayer: Father, may the renewal of my baptismal promises at Mass on Easter
be all You want it to be.

Promise: "Listen to My voice; then I will be your God and you shall be My
people. Walk in all the ways that I command you, so that you may
prosper." —Jer 7:23

Praise: When renewing her baptismal vows, Linda makes a special point of
really listening to the words, then responding with true conviction.

DOCILITY

"Naaman went away angry." —2 Kings 5:11

A docile person is teachable and ready to learn willingly. Docility to the
Lord's teaching received through the Scriptures and the Church is a
hallmark of a child of God.

Naaman, the Syrian army commander and leper, probably considered himself
docile. After all, he had traveled many miles to hear Elisha's words (2
Kgs 5:5). However, he lacked docility since he would only receive
instruction in limited ways. He wanted instruction on healing, but wanted
it directly from the prophet Elisha, and he wanted it in dramatic form.
When Elisha sent the desired instruction, Naaman was not docile to it,
since the instructions came from a mere messenger and contained a "dull"
directive (see 2 Kgs 5:11ff).

The Jews in Nazareth probably considered themselves docile. After all,
they gathered weekly in the synagogue to read about the coming Messiah.
However, when Jesus came as their long-awaited Messiah, they weren't
docile to His word and expelled Him (Lk 4:28ff). Jesus was just a local
Carpenter. His prophecy was "too much" for them (Mk 6:3).

Most of us probably consider ourselves docile. After all, we're reading
One Bread, One Body and the daily eucharistic Scriptures. Yet will we be
docile to God when He uses celibate men, such as the Pope and the bishops,
to deliver His message on artificial birth control or social justice? Have
we been docile to God's teaching on submissive wives and sacrificially
loving husbands? (Eph 5:22ff) Will we be docile if the Lord chooses to
speak His message through our spouse, children, in-laws, or enemies? Beg
the Lord to help you be docile by His standards.

Prayer: "Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening" (1 Sm 3:9).

Promise: "Send forth Your light and Your fidelity; they shall lead me
on." —Ps 43:3

Praise: St. John listened to God and served the poor with compassion.

Jesus, help us to truly have a change of heart this Lenten season.

Have it change us into what You want us to become.

Jesus, sometimes we become too worldly, in our thoughts and actions,
and this draws us away from You.

We don't mean to, but we let the world stop us from giving You all
the honor and glory that You so truly deserve.

Help us to focus on You, and let all our thoughts start with, what
can I do to please God? will this action give Him glory?

Jesus increase our faith. Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

Sunday FRUITFUL HUMILITY

"Perhaps it will bear fruit. If not, it shall be cut down." —Luke 13:9

Jesus commands us to bear fruit, that is, to lead people to Him.
If we don't go and make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19), we will
suffer a tragic end (Lk 13:3, 5), be cut down (Lk 13:9), and thrown
into the eternal fire of hell (see Jn 15:6). Jesus insists on our
bearing fruit not to be harsh with us, but because He wants all
"to be saved and come to know the truth" (1 Tm 2:4). Because of
His love for all people, Jesus must insist that those who know
Him proclaim His crucified love to suffering humanity.

Despite the necessity and urgency of leading others to Christ,
many Christians are still reluctant to obey the Lord. We need to
do what Moses did when he met God in the burning bush. We
must take off our shoes, that is, humble ourselves (Ex 3:5). A
humble person will not disobey God. A humble person will not
question God's callings, His timing, and the feasibility of His
plans. A humble person will go and tell the good news. Possibly
the greatest "evangelist" of our times was Mother Teresa. She
was not exceptionally articulate or brilliant, but she was humble.
Moreover, St. Francis of Assisi was one of the greatest
evangelists in the history of the Church because he was humble.

Let's learn from Jesus, Who is gentle and humble of heart
(Mt 11:29). When we humble ourselves (Mt 23:12), we will find
that the humble are the fruitful.
