WORK PLACE

"Cursed be the ground because of you! In toil shall you eat its yield all the days of your life." -Genesis 3:17

After the first sin, women began to suffer labor pains in bringing forth children (Gn 3:16). Men also began to suffer other pains of labor. To make a living, men had to sweat and suffer (Gn 3:19). Work became a curse. It was a living hell.

Only in Jesus is the curse of work removed. In Jesus, we no longer are slaves forced to work for our human needs. Instead, we are slaves of Christ (Col 3:23-24). We don't have to work for perishable food; we can work for food that lasts unto life eternal (Jn 6:27). Moreover, we don't have to work for everything we get. We can receive grace, that is, a free, unworked-for gift of God.

This life of grace is prefigured by the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. In this miracle, four thousand people got something for nothing (Mk 8:9). They didn't have to work for it. Humanity's slavery to work was superseded by grace from Jesus.

Jesus worked as a carpenter for most of His life, and then became a curse for us by hanging on the tree of the cross (Gal 3:13). Jesus has freed us from the curse of work. Therefore, instead of working in a dead-end job, work for the living, eternal Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may I not work on Sundays to show the world I am free from slavery to work.

Promise: "My heart is moved with pity for the crowd." -Mk 8:2

Praise: By dedicating his business to the Sacred Heart, Patrick made his office a place of prayer.

GRAND OPENING

"Then the eyes of both of them were opened." -Genesis 3:7, RNAB

My daughter is engaged. She and her fiancé are preparing for marriage by taking counsel from the writings of the Popes and the wealth of the extraordinarily beautiful teachings of the Catholic Church on married life and human reproduction. Praise be to God for His glorious plan for man and woman!

The innocent eyes of Adam and Eve were opened to the world of sin and disobedience when they disobeyed God. Now in a sinful, secular world, which by its nature rebels against the will of God, married couples and those preparing for marriage desperately need to have their eyes opened (Gn 3:7) to the glory of God's beautiful plan for marriage. God's plan draws upon the original innocence and intimacy of man and woman before the fall. Yet God's plan far exceeds his original plan for Adam and Eve. It has been redeemed in Jesus to a new, risen, glorious innocence and intimacy of man and woman made into new creations in Jesus.

Married couples and those preparing for marriage, put your relationship in the hands of Jesus. Let Jesus touch your eyes and ears, and open them to hear God's will for your marriage. Jesus "has done everything well" (Mk 7:37), and He will make your relationship better than you could ever ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20).

Prayer: Father, may all men and women let Jesus open their eyes (Gn 3:7) and ears (Mk 7:35).

Promise: "You are my Shelter; from distress You will preserve me; with glad cries of freedom You will ring me round." -Ps 32:7

Praise: Pedro keeps a bottle of Lourdes water on his desk at work. It has started numerous conversations and has led to evangelistic opportunities in the workplace.

DOG-GONE

"It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs." -Mark 7:27

Bishop Fulton Sheen once said that the difference between a baptized Christian and a non-baptized person is greater than the difference between a man and an amoeba. Obviously it's not right to take food from our children and give it to an amoeba, or a dog, for that matter.

The Syro-Phoenician woman intuitively grasped that she was not worthy of being treated with the same status as one of Jesus' disciples. Nevertheless, she also believed that Jesus would be moved by a humble yet persistent appeal to His mercy. "She approached Him and crouched at His feet" like a dog (Mk 7:25). If being humble meant that she could be around Jesus and make her request to Him, then she would gladly be like a dog. Jesus not only granted her request, but honored her faith and raised her status to that of a child of God.

The glory of our faith is that our God adopts us into His family with the full status of His sons and daughters. When we accept Jesus as our Lord, Savior, and God, and receive baptism, we are no longer like amoebas, dogs, or unbelievers. We are no longer slaves (Jn 15:15; Gal 4:7). In Jesus, we are children of God. We are heirs of the promises of God (Gal 4:7). We are "sharers of the divine nature" (2 Pt 1:4). Praise You, Jesus! Alleluia!

Prayer: "Lord, 'increase our faith' " (Lk 17:5).

Promise: "Happy are you who fear the Lord, who walk in His ways!" -Ps 128:1

Praise: St. Scholastica had the faith of a trusting child as she saw her final request being granted by her loving Father. Her soul was seen ascending by her brother St. Benedict.

"THE HEART OF DARKNESS"

"All these evils come from within." -Mark 7:23

Jesus said: "Wicked designs come from the deep recesses of the heart" (Mk 7:21), and not from eating the wrong foods (see Mk 7:19). He denied the old saying: "You are what you eat." Food is not the issue; the heart is.

What affects us permanently is not so much what we put in our mouths, but what enters our lives through our eyes and ears. Jesus said: "The eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyesight is sound, your whole body is lighted up, but when your eyesight is bad, your body is in darkness" (Lk 11:34).

Paul taught: "Faith, then, comes through hearing" (Rm 10:17). What we believe and don't believe has been affected by what we have heard with our ears. Therefore, Isaiah described a righteous person as "stopping his ears lest he hear of bloodshed, closing his eyes lest he look on evil" (Is 33:15). We must guard our eyes and ears. Otherwise, our hearts will be in great danger of defilement. If defiled, they will spew forth "acts of fornication, theft, murder, adulterous conduct, greed, maliciousness, deceit, sensuality, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, an obtuse spirit" (Mk 7:21-22).

Consequently, you can see how dangerous a TV is. It can bombard our hearts with thousands of pictures and words which, unless extremely good, will be extremely devastating in their effect on us. TV can destroy our hearts.

Guard your heart (see Phil 4:7).

Prayer: Jesus, Doctor and Surgeon, remove any foreign elements from my heart.

Promise: "Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord, my God, You are great indeed!" -Ps 104:1

Praise: Patricia teaches young people about the freeing power of receiving the grace of the sacraments.

A LIP READING

"This people pays Me lip service." -Mark 7:6

When Jesus said that the Pharisees paid only lip service to God, they probably took this as we do when we hear this passage read at church. They realized Jesus was quoting Isaiah 29:13, so they may have brushed off Jesus' words as only a Biblical reference and not a personal call to repent. As with us, probably few Pharisees thought they were guilty of lip service.

Jesus tried to break through the self-deception of the Pharisees by giving some tell-tale signs of lip service. Jesus maintained that those paying lip service also disregard God's commandments (Mk 7:8). This is also an indictment of our own society, for never has a culture disobeyed and disregarded God's commands as much as we have. For instance, through abortion and other acts of violence, we have killed more people than any other culture has. We may also hold the world record for idol worship (putting things ahead of God), taking God's name in vain, not keeping holy the Lord's day, not honoring our parents, adultery, stealing, bearing false witness, and coveting. Jesus implied that those who disregard His commands are guilty of lip service, whether or not they realize or admit it.

If you are not obeying the Lord's commands, repent and cry out with Isaiah: "Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips!" (Is 6:5) The Lord will send an angel holding an ember to purify your lips (Is 6:6ff) or He will purify you in some other way. Repent of lip service.

Prayer: Father, purify my lips when I receive Your Son's body and blood in Communion.

Promise: "God blessed them, saying: 'Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.' " -Gn 1:28

Praise: St. Jerome lived his call to holiness in obedience to God by caring for the sick and hungry at his own expense.

GOING TO MARKET?

"They laid the sick in the market places and begged Him to let them touch just the tassel of His cloak. All who touched Him got well." -Mark 6:56

When we think of healing, we often think of a hospital, doctor's office, or even a church. However, the primary location for Jesus' amazing healing ministry was the market place. In fact, the primary location for Jesus' whole ministry was the market place. Jesus preached and taught in the market place. Therefore, healing would also be in the market place, because it accompanied the proclamation of the word (Mk 16:20).

The market place in Jesus' times was not just where you buy something, but it was the center of social life. Jesus' market place was business, family, and entertainment all rolled into one. Therefore, if we focus our ministry on the market place as Jesus did, we will bring prayer into our homes and businesses. We will use the mass media for evangelization, and witness for Jesus especially on the job. We may see more healing services at work than at church. Our houses will be houses of prayer (see Is 56:7) and will even be Christian communities. The mass media will be saturated with the gospel.

As Jesus did, we must go to the market place with the gospel.

Prayer: Father, may I never be ashamed of the gospel (Rm 1:16), but proclaim it from the housetops (Mt 10:27).

Promise: "Then God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light." -Gn 1:3

Praise: A popular fast food chain has a crucifix prominently displayed in one of its locations.

Sunday GOOD OR GOD?

"Your light must shine before men so that they may see goodness in your acts
and give praise to your heavenly Father." -Matthew 5:16

Our good deeds should be recognized as good and should inspire others to give
praise to our heavenly Father, the Source of all goodness. This is not happening
as often as it should. Many good deeds are done, but people don't think of God
as responsible for them. Our secular society focuses on human beings rather
than on God when it notices someone's good deeds. In fact, it's often
considered inappropriate to mention God publicly or in the mass media.

To prevent others from using our good deeds to ignore God rather than praise
Him, Jesus told us to put our light on the lampstand (Mt 5:15). The lampstand
symbolizes the Church (see Rv 1:20). We must do good deeds because we are
members of Christ's body, the Church. We are Jesus' hands and feet. We don't
do what we want to or feel is necessary; we do what the Lord commands as
He speaks through His Church. As members of Christ's Church, we are not
merely do-gooders, but witnesses for Jesus and evangelizers. We do good
deeds to practice what we're already preaching.

When we do good as members of the Church, in obedience to the Church, and
in service to the evangelizing mission of the Church, people will not call us
"humanitarians" but "Christians," and will give praise to our heavenly Father.
