KNOWLEDGE-ABLE
"I have come to rate all as loss in the light of the surpassing knowledge of my Lord Jesus Christ." -Philippians 3:8
Because of Paul's "surpassing knowledge" of Jesus, he came to rate all as loss. Paul's personal relationship with Jesus changed the "ratings" in his life. Things he used to rate high were reassessed as worthless and empty.
All of us have a "surpassing knowledge." Usually, our knowledge of and attraction to pleasure surpasses all else. For many people, even Christians, food, entertainment, TV programs, money, or lifestyle rate the highest. These surpass everything else.
Eventually, we experience a "surpassing knowledge" of tragedy and/or death. This changes our ratings. In the face of death, we now rate as loss those things for which we formerly lived. We feel so empty and regret that we've wasted our lives. We feel condemned by the vain, stupid, empty priorities of our past life.
However, the surpassing knowledge of tragedy and/or death, which surpassed our preoccupation with pleasure, can itself be surpassed by the personal knowledge of Jesus. When we totally give our lives to Jesus, we no longer stand condemned by the empty priorities of our past (see Rm 8:1). These vanities and regrets all disappear (see Jn 8:10). We give "no thought to what lies behind but push on to what is ahead" (Phil 3:13). Life in Christ is not merely meaningless stimulation but real excitement. Because of our knowledge of Jesus, life is a race, not a drag (see Phil 3:12). Live in the light of the surpassing knowledge of Jesus.
Prayer: Father, "I wish to know Christ and the power flowing from His resurrection; likewise to know how to share in His sufferings by being formed into the pattern of His death" (Phil 3:10).
Promise: "See, I am doing something new! Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?" -Is 43:19
Praise: Risen Lord Jesus, praise You for revealing Yourself to us. You are the Light of my life (see Jn 8:12).

PRESSURE-COOKER
"I knew it because the Lord informed me; at that time You, O Lord, showed me their doings." -Jeremiah 11:18
The temple guards were so impressed by Jesus' words that they disobeyed their orders to arrest Him (Jn 7:45). They said: "No man ever spoke like that before" (Jn 7:46). The religious leaders pressured the guards to not accept Jesus and to follow the "party line." The guards gave in to the pressure.
"There were many, even among the Sanhedrin, who believed in Him; but they refused to admit it because of the Pharisees, for fear they might be ejected from the synagogue. They preferred the praise of men to the glory of God" (Jn 12:42-43). They gave in to the pressure.
The apostles were pressured to abandon Jesus. Peter was pressured to deny Him three times. They all folded under pressure (see Mk 14:50, 68ff).
After Pentecost, once again the pressure was on. This time the apostles (Acts 4:19; 5:29), Stephen (Acts 7:55ff), Philip (Acts 8:4ff), Ananias (Acts 9:13), Paul (Acts 28:31), etc., refused to crack under the pressure. The Holy Spirit made the difference.
Because we live in an anti-Christian society and a "culture of death," we Christians are often under pressure at home, work, school, and even at church. If we open our hearts to the Holy Spirit during this Lent and Easter season, we will stand up to the pressure.
Prayer: Father, may I be "good under pressure."
Promise: "A Shield before me is God, Who saves the upright of heart." -Ps 7:11
Praise: Albert's witness to his grandchildren has drawn his children back to the Church.

LENT'S LAST JOYFULLY PAINFUL DAYS
"To us he is the censure of our thoughts; merely to see him is a hardship for us. Because his life is not like other men's, and different are his ways." -Wisdom 2:14-15
The lives of the just are a bright light and a prophetic witness against the deeds of darkness (Wis 2:12ff). Therefore, "everyone who practices evil hates the light; he does not come near it for fear his deeds will be exposed" (Jn 3:20). Those in the darkness of sin show their hatred for those who are the light of the world (see Mt 5:14) by reviling and torturing them (Wis 2:19). They may even condemn them to a shameful death (Wis 2:20).
During Lent, we try to imitate Jesus in fasting for forty days (see Mt 4:2). As this inspires us to imitate Jesus in other ways, we walk more and more in the light (see 1 Jn 1:7). This means we are a greater irritation to those in darkness and therefore more likely to be persecuted more often and more severely. Therefore, the last days of Lent can be exceptionally difficult.
Two weeks from today is Good Friday, the day on which we especially remember Jesus' saving death. As Jesus neared the first Good Friday, His opponents tried to seize and kill Him (Jn 7:1, 30). Likewise, as you near Good Friday, expect increasing persecution (2 Tm 3:12). If you are "judged worthy of ill-treatment for the sake of the Name" of Jesus, you should rejoice that you are walking in the light more deeply (Acts 5:41). "Happy are you when you are insulted for the sake of Christ, for then God's Spirit in Its glory has come to rest on you" (1 Pt 4:14). "Blest are those persecuted for holiness' sake; the reign of God is theirs" (Mt 5:10).
Prayer: Father, make me worthy of being persecuted more. May I love You so much as to desire to suffer for You.
Promise: "He calls blest the destiny of the just and boasts that God is his Father." -Wis 2:16
Praise: Robert saw the awesome connection between the Mass and Calvary.

IT'S ALL ABOUT JESUS
"It was about Me that [Moses] wrote." -John 5:46
Moses wrote about Jesus (Jn 5:46). Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John wrote about Jesus in their Gospels. St. Paul wrote about Jesus in all of his New Testament letters. At Corinth, Paul spoke "of nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified" (1 Cor 2:2). The Blessed Virgin Mary spent her life treasuring Jesus and everything that concerned Him (Lk 2:19). The angels center their existence around Jesus (Jn 1:51).
In Lent, we prepare ourselves to enter into the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus is "the Resurrection and the Life" (Jn 11:25). He is the meaning of Lent, the reason for the season.
Jesus "is before all else that is. In Him everything continues in being. It is He Who is Head of the body, the Church; He Who is the Beginning, the First-Born of the dead, so that primacy may be His in everything" (Col 1:17-18). It's all about Jesus.
Are your thoughts, words, desires, sufferings, works, and leisure all about Jesus? Have you been crucified with Christ, so that the life you live now is not your own, but is the life of Jesus living in you? (Gal 2:19-20) Are you immersed in the life of Jesus? This is what it means to be baptized into Jesus.
In two weeks, Lent ends and the Triduum begins. Then on Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday, we will renew our baptismal promises to be immersed in Jesus. At that moment, we will six times tell Jesus, "I do." Speak each "I do" to Jesus with even more love than a bride and groom say "I do" on their wedding day. Make your life all about Jesus.
Prayer: Jesus, I come to You to possess life (Jn 5:40). I will fix my eyes upon You moment by moment (Heb 12:2).
Promise: "These very works which I perform testify on My behalf that the Father has sent Me." -Jn 5:36
Praise: Michelle often repeats God's promise that mercy triumphs over judgment (Jas 2:13) to remind herself that to be merciful is to receive mercy.

"I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU" (Is 49:15)
"Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you." -Isaiah 49:15
Isaiah prophesied the above message from the Lord God over 2,500 years ago. At that time, abortion was unheard of. Children were considered blessings from the Lord. The strongest possible human bond was that which existed between mother and child. Yet even then, some mothers "forgot" their children and allowed them to be sacrificed to pagan gods (e.g. Lam 4:10).
At present, surgical and chemical abortions occur in staggering numbers. In some countries, women abort more than twice as many babies as they keep, whether voluntarily or by coercion. Often men pressure women to "eliminate" the "mistake" by having an abortion. Entire generations of children have grown up knowing that mothers forget and abort their children. Is it any wonder masses of people don't realize God loves them? (Is 49:14)
Isaiah's stirring prophecy rings even more true today. God "will never forget you" (Is 49:15). "God has said, 'I will never desert you, nor will I forsake you' " (Heb 13:5). Yet how many of these confused souls will ever pick up a Bible, much less hear these consoling prophecies? You may be the only "Bible" some people ever encounter. Repent of any part you may have played in not wanting or loving children. "Make disciples" by generously conceiving and bearing children (Mt 28:19). Love your children as "the Father loves the Son" (Jn 5:20). Help lost and hurting people to know God will never forget them.
Prayer: Father, may parents love their children to such an extent that others will be able to see in their love a reflection of Your own personal love for them.
Promise: "I solemnly assure you, the man who hears My word and has faith in Him Who sent Me possesses eternal life." -Jn 5:24

"I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU" (Is 49:15)
"Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you." -Isaiah 49:15
Isaiah prophesied the above message from the Lord God over 2,500 years ago. At that time, abortion was unheard of. Children were considered blessings from the Lord. The strongest possible human bond was that which existed between mother and child. Yet even then, some mothers "forgot" their children and allowed them to be sacrificed to pagan gods (e.g. Lam 4:10).
At present, surgical and chemical abortions occur in staggering numbers. In some countries, women abort more than twice as many babies as they keep, whether voluntarily or by coercion. Often men pressure women to "eliminate" the "mistake" by having an abortion. Entire generations of children have grown up knowing that mothers forget and abort their children. Is it any wonder masses of people don't realize God loves them? (Is 49:14)
Isaiah's stirring prophecy rings even more true today. God "will never forget you" (Is 49:15). "God has said, 'I will never desert you, nor will I forsake you' " (Heb 13:5). Yet how many of these confused souls will ever pick up a Bible, much less hear these consoling prophecies? You may be the only "Bible" some people ever encounter. Repent of any part you may have played in not wanting or loving children. "Make disciples" by generously conceiving and bearing children (Mt 28:19). Love your children as "the Father loves the Son" (Jn 5:20). Help lost and hurting people to know God will never forget them.
Prayer: Father, may parents love their children to such an extent that others will be able to see in their love a reflection of Your own personal love for them.
Promise: "I solemnly assure you, the man who hears My word and has faith in Him Who sent Me possesses eternal life." -Jn 5:24
Praise: Each day, Robert meditates on the daily Mass readings.

Ezekiel 47:1-9, 12, Psalm 46:2-3, 5-6, 8-9, John 5:1-16

"RIVERS OF LIVING WATER" (Jn 7:38)
"I saw water flowing." -Ezekiel 47:1
Water trickled "from beneath the threshold of the temple toward the east" (Ez 47:1). This trickle became a great river which emptied into the sea and made the salt waters fresh (Ez 47:8-9). Wherever this river flowed, it brought abundant life (Ez 47:12). In today's psalm, the psalmist refers to "a stream whose runlets gladden the city of God" (Ps 46:5). Because God is present in His city and at this stream, this stream is a river of peace where the Lord stops "wars to the end of the earth" (Ps 46:10). Our gospel reading mentions the water of the pool of Bethesda, a spiritual whirlpool which gave healing to the first person plunged into it after it was miraculously agitated (Jn 5:7).
The Church has chosen these Biblical readings about water to prepare us to renew our baptismal promises in two-and-a-half weeks. The waters of Baptism are much greater than Ezekiel's river of life, the psalmist's river of peace, or the healing pool of Bethesda. The waters of Baptism are greater than the flood waters at Noah's time, the waters of the Red Sea, and even the River Jordan in which Jesus was baptized. When we renew our baptismal promises, we reject Satan, all his works, and all his empty promises. We believe with all our hearts in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Thus we will know the life-giving, soul-saving, cleansing, freeing, and healing powers of the waters of Baptism. Prepare to make the greatest act of faith in your life.
Prayer: Father, I plunge and immerse myself in the waters of Your love.
Promise: "Remember, now, you have been cured. Give up your sins so that something worse may not overtake you." -Jn 5:14
Praise: Roger makes a point of talking to and spending time with those in his ministry in order to better serve their needs.

THE WORLD-CHANGING HOUROF FAITH APPROACHES
"He and his whole household thereupon became believers." -John 4:53
At Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday Mass, the Lord will call us to make the greatest act of faith in our lives. We will be asked three questions: "Do you have faith in the Father? In the Son? In the Holy Spirit?" We will be able to answer these questions with faith only if we have first answered three other questions: "Do we reject Satan? All his works? All his empty promises?" To reject the many thousands of Satan's works and empty promises is a humanly impossible act of faith, which can only be done by grace.
To strengthen our faith in preparation for the greatest act of faith at Easter, the Church reads to us from the Gospel of John, beginning today and throughout most of the remaining weekdays of Lent. John's Gospel was specifically written to help us have faith "that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, so that through this faith" we may have life in His name (Jn 20:31). Like the royal official in today's Gospel reading, in this last half of Lent we are being increasingly challenged by Jesus to have faith in His words (Jn 4:50). Each one of us and each of our households are called to believe in Jesus as never before (see Jn 4:53).
Very soon, we will be called to make the greatest act of faith in our lives when we renew our baptismal promises. At that hour of faith, the sick will be healed (see Jn 4:52-53), mountains of sin will be moved (Mt 17:20), the strongholds of the evil one will crumble (2 Cor 10:4), and the victory of the risen Christ will be applied to our lives. By faith, we will have Easter and life. Increase your faith (Lk 17:5).
Prayer: Father, may this be the greatest Easter in history.
Promise: "Lo, I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the things of the past shall not be remembered or come to mind." -Is 65:17
Praise: While job hunting, Peter turned down job offers that would have presented temptations to him.
