PM eNewsletter 15th Sunday in ordinary time

July 14th 15th Sunday in ordinary time.

Jesus, again and again, we try to walk with You, but our
life gets in the way.

We start to worry and fret, we get anxious and fearful,
instead of just trusting You.

Jesus, give us the grace to truly trust you.

Let us truly realize that we don't have the answer, except You.

You, Christ, are the true answer to all of life, with all
of its twists and turns.

Lord, help us truly realize that You have a plan, we may
not understand it, or even realize it, but Your plan will
work out when You say it will.

Give us the courage to go forward everyday into trusting
You and Your ways.

keep us in the arms of You and Mary our mother.

Amen and Amen.

Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE BROTHERHOOD
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=7/14/2013

"Who is my neighbor?" -Luke 10:29

Christians believe that all people are called to be brothers and sisters in Christ, but we
don't believe all people are brothers and sisters. First, they would have to be baptized
into God's family. While not believing that universal brotherhood is the present state of
affairs, Christians believe in universal neighborhood. We believe everyone is our neighbor
and therefore should be respected, loved, and served. Our neighbors are:

1.the man stripped, beaten, and left half-dead by the robbers (Lk 10:30),
2.the robbers who beat up the man,
3.the priest and the Levite who refused to help the man,
4.the Samaritan, that is, our enemies, for Samaritans were enemies of the Jews, and
5.the lawyer who questioned Jesus to "justify himself" (Lk 10:29).

Our neighbors are everyone - friend or foe, victim or victimizer, the neighborly or
unneighborly.

If we love our neighbors, it's possible they will become our brothers and sisters. "Love
never fails" (1 Cor 13:8). "Love covers a multitude of sins" (1 Pt 4:8). If we love our
neighbors, we'll tell them about the One Who loves them so much He died on the cross for
them. If we truly believe in universal neighborhood, we may see the fulfillment of universal
brotherhood. Love your neighbors into God's kingdom.

Prayer: Father, may I love my neighbors so much that I will tell them You want to be their
Father.

Promise: "He is the Image of the invisible God, the First-born of all creatures." -Col 1:15

Praise: Praise Jesus, Whose love made us brothers and sisters in Him! "I will praise the
name of God" (Ps 69:31).

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

THE GOSPEL OF LIFE

"THANK THE LORD"

... In the Year of Faith, let us thank the Lord for the gift of life in all its forms, and
at the same time, let us proclaim the Gospel of Life.

"POINTS OF MEDITATION"

... I would like to offer you three simple points of meditation for our faith; first, the
Bible reveals to us the Living God, the God Who is life and the source of life; second,
Jesus Christ bestows life and the Holy Spirit maintains us in life; and third, following
God's way leads to life; whereas following idols leads to death.

WHAT IS YOUR IMAGE OF GOD?

What is the image we have of God? Perhaps he appears to us as a severe judge, as someone
who curtails our freedom and the way we live our lives? But the Scriptures everywhere tell
us that God is the Living God, the one who bestows life and points the way to fullness of
life.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE BROTHERHOOD

"Who is my neighbor?" -Luke 10:29

Christians believe that all people are called to be brothers and sisters in Christ, but we don't believe all people are brothers and sisters. First, they would have to be baptized into God's family. While not believing that universal brotherhood is the present state of affairs, Christians believe in universal neighborhood. Our neighbors are everyone - friend or foe, victim or victimizer, the neighborly or unneighborly.

FALSE GUILT

"Please, therefore, forgive the crime that we, the servants of your father's God, committed." -Genesis 50:17

After their father Jacob died, Joseph's brothers asked Joseph to forgive them. He had already forgiven them over seventeen years before, but they didn't believe it. Many Christians do the same thing when they again ask God to forgive them days, months, or years after they have already asked His forgiveness in Confession. They apparently must not believe that God has forgiven them. Although God, the Church, the Bible, and the priest in Confession all say they are forgiven, they don't believe it. They become victims of false guilt.
When we repent, all heaven rejoices (see Lk 15:7). The Lord wants us to join in the celebration on our behalf. He not only wants us to be forgiven, but also to feel forgiven - to enjoy and rejoice in the forgiveness He has made possible by His death on Calvary.
When Joseph was asked a second time by his brothers for forgiveness, he cried (Gn 50:17). The Lord is also saddened when we doubt His forgiveness and thereby deprive ourselves of the joy of being freed from sin. So believe in and rejoice in being forgiven. Thank the Lord and tell the world you are freed, forgiven, and loved.

Prayer: Father, may I know by faith that I am forgiven of all the sins I have confessed, even the sexual sins.

Promise: "As for you, every hair of your head has been counted; so do not be afraid of anything." -Mt 10:30-31

Praise: St. Henry was able to integrate his holiness into his political life. He promoted religious worship and built churches "that the sacrifice of salvation may be offered constantly for all the faithful."

DON'T BE SURPRISED IF...

"You will be hated by all on account of Me. But whoever holds out till the end will escape death." -Matthew 10:22

Jesus commanded His disciples to be on "guard with respect to others" (Mt 10:17) because He would send His disciples out "like sheep among wolves" (Mt 10:16). He said that they may be handed over to the police by their own families (see Mt 10:21). Because we are Jesus' disciples, we may be handed over to be beaten, tried, and executed, after having witnessed for Jesus by the power of the Spirit (see Mt 10:17-21).
As I was reading today's Gospel, I was thinking about how far-fetched this seems to many Christians, although those in Muslim countries and in China understand today's Gospel all too well. While I was thinking about this, I was handed a note informing me that the associate pastor of a parish I was familiar with had received a threat on his life. The man making the threat was arrested, and the priest threatened by him was not attacked. However, this message made me think that many of us Christians may be in more danger of severe persecution than we think. The Lord tells us that any godly person or even anyone wanting to live a godly life should expect to be persecuted (2 Tm 3:12). We must arm ourselves with the mentality that we will suffer in the flesh (1 Pt 4:1). Expect the privilege of persecution (see Acts 5:41).

Prayer: Father, may I be worthy of being persecuted for love of You. May I hold out till the end (see Lk 21:19).

Promise: "I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you a great nation." -Gn 46:3

Praise: Maria endures being called "old-fashioned" and "intolerant" because of her views on Christian marriage.

THE KINGDOM

"As you go, make this announcement: 'The kingdom of God is at hand!' " -Matthew 10:7, our transl.

Jesus commands us to go and announce God's kingdom. We should walk kingdom, talk kingdom, and think kingdom. When we see or hear of a sick person (see Mt 10:8), we reach out to give them God's healing, for this is a sign of God's kingdom (see Mt 4:23). When we hear of a death (see Mt 10:8), we think resurrection because the King of the kingdom has risen from the dead. When we see a social leper (see Mt 10:8), we reach out in love because those marginalized by worldly standards are to be warmly welcomed into God's kingdom.
Because we seek first God's kingdom (see Mt 6:33), we oppose the kingdom of darkness (see Col 1:13) and expel demons (Mt 10:8). To receive God's kingdom, we must decide to be poor (Mt 5:3) and to sell all that we have to purchase it (Mt 13:44-46). Therefore, we have a unique attitude toward possessions. We "provide [ourselves] with neither gold nor silver nor copper" (Mt 10:9). King Jesus possesses everything. We possess and are possessed by nothing but Him.
In summary, those who have entered God's kingdom have the mind of Christ the King (1 Cor 2:16) toward life, people, sickness, death, demons, possessions, etc. Seek first God's kingdom (Mt 6:33) and the mind of the King.

Prayer: King Jesus, use me and use me up for Your kingdom.

Promise: "The gift you have received, give as a gift." -Mt 10:8

Praise: St. Benedict lived the kingdom of God and his rule has extended down through time. He received the privilege of dying immediately after receiving Jesus in the Eucharist.

(For a related teaching, order our leaflet Seek First The Kingdom".)

GUILT TRIPS

"Now comes the reckoning for his blood." -Genesis 42:22

In today's first reading, we meet Joseph's ten brothers. They are starving and in prison (Gn 42:5, 17). They are in anguish (Gn 42:21). They feel they are being punished for planning to kill their brother Joseph and eventually selling him into slavery (Gn 42:21). They have been guilt-ridden for twenty-two years. Even after Joseph showed forgiveness to his brothers and tried to promote reconciliation, they remained in spiritual starvation and imprisonment for seventeen more years (see Gn 50:15). Joseph's brothers went on a thirty-nine year guilt trip.
When we sin, we must go on a guilt trip because we are guilty. Even if we rationalize our sins, we are only delaying the guilt trip. The longer we wait to go on it, the worse it becomes. The Lord wants us to admit our guilt and immediately come to Him. A guilt trip that goes to Jesus can last thirty-nine seconds instead of thirty-nine years. However, a guilt trip that goes anywhere else is prolonged indefinitely. Sin and guilt don't go away by our efforts. However, when we take sin and guilt to Jesus, they go away permanently.
The only way to get rid of guilt permanently is to take it to Jesus. Go on a guilt trip to Jesus immediately. May the trip be over in minutes or even seconds.

Prayer: Father, may I go to Jesus, Confession, and heaven.

Promise: Jesus "summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority to expel unclean spirits and to cure sickness and disease of every kind." -Mt 10:1

Praise: Joan has learned to face her guilt by standing before the Lord rather than to deny it and hide.

PRIZE FIGHT

"You shall no longer be spoken of as Jacob, but as Israel, because you have contended with divine and human beings and have prevailed." -Genesis 32:29

The name "Jacob" was popularly thought to mean "heel" (Gn 25:26). His name was changed to "Israel," which was often explained as meaning "you contended with God." Jacob was changed into a fighter. Sometimes he fought against God and at other times for God.
The Lord also wants to change us into fighters for Him. St. Paul described the Christian life as the "good fight" (2 Tm 4:7, NAB). However, we are not to fight human beings, for our battle is not against them (Eph 6:12). Rather, we should fight Satan, evil, falsehood, abortion, racism, injustice, and sin. The Lord calls us to work in His harvest and fight against demons with the authority He has given us (see Mt 9:38-10:1). The Bible commands us: "Even to the death fight for truth, and the Lord your God will battle for you" (Sir 4:28). "Fight hard for the faith delivered once for all to the saints" (Jude 3).
Are we fighting for God, life, truth, holiness, justice, and peace, or are we apathetic? If we "remain indifferent in time of adversity," our strength will depart from us (Prv 24:10). We must not stand by idly while our neighbors' lives are at stake (Lv 19:16). If we do not speak out to dissuade the wicked from their wicked conduct, we are held responsible for their deaths (Ez 3:18; 33:8). You are named "fighter," so fight in the Lord.

Prayer: Father, may my life be accurately described as "the good fight."

Promise: "Once the demon was expelled the mute began to speak, to the great surprise of the crowds." -Mt 9:33

Praise: St. Augustine and companions planted the seeds of future Catholics through the blood of their martyrdom.
