July 13th Fifteenth Sunday in ordinary time
This week oh Christ, Your church celebrates the feast of
"Our lady of Mount Carmel".
Mary, our mother, has given us a very powerful prayer form
that can accomplish marvelous results--the rosary.
For those of us who don't say the rosary everyday, inspire us
to start anew.
Help us to meditate on the mysteries of Your time on earth
and see the love that You constantly showed in doing Your
Fathers will.
Jesus, help us to realize the power of moms intercession to You.
Amen and Amen.
Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

This weeks readings and reflections
Sunday THE JOY OF SUFFERING

"I consider the sufferings of the present to be as nothing compared
with the glory to be revealed in us." -Romans 8:18
When we suffer, we may take a pill for pain relief. However, Paul
recommends that we pray for a deeper awareness of God's glory. We
need to increase our awareness of God's glory more than decrease
our pain. Then we will consider our suffering as nothing compared
to His glory to be revealed in us. We can even become so aware of
God's glory that we consider suffering a privilege (Phil 1:29),
find our joy in our suffering (Col 1:24), and even rejoice in
proportion to our suffering (1 Pt 4:13).
For most people, their joy increases as their suffering decreases.
For Christians aware of God's glory, our joy increases as our
suffering increases. This is only possible for those deeply aware
of God's glorious presence (1 Pt 2:19). This fear of the Lord is
the beginning of wisdom (Ps 111:10), even of wisdom concerning our
suffering. We find joy in suffering only when we suffer
redemptively through self-sacrifice and persecution.
Most suffering should be removed through repentance, evangelization,
deliverance, and/or healing. Redemptive suffering, however, should
be compared to God's glory and considered nothing (see Rm 8:18). We
should rejoice in redemptive suffering and even seek to increase it
by living totally for Christ.
Prayer: Father, give me the faith and love to pray to share more in
Your sufferings (see Phil 3:10).
Promise: "So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it
shall not return to Me void, but shall do My will, achieving the
end for which I sent it." -Is 55:11
Praise: He once was dead, but now He lives (Rv 1:18). Jesus is
Lord! Alleluia!

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road
ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I
really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following
your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe
that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I
have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never
do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this
you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about
it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost
and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with
me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

AUTHENTIC CHRISTIANS
"Whoever acknowledges Me before men I will acknowledge before My Father in heaven." -Matthew 10:32
Jesus' disciples are slandered (see Mt 10:25) and persecuted (2 Tm 3:12). Nonetheless, they remain fearless (see Mt 10:26, 28, 31), bold, and free witnesses, acknowledging and proclaiming Jesus, even before the most hostile of men (Mt 10:32). Jesus' disciples are not intimidated and manipulated. In their personal weakness, God's power in them reaches perfection (2 Cor 12:9). They even rejoice that they are judged worthy of ill-treatment for the sake of Jesus' name (Acts 5:41).
The fearless freedom and joyful boldness of Jesus' disciples shocks the world. The worldly find it hard to believe that Christians are really what they seem to be. Some people in this world even ask Christians the reason for their hope, joy, and freedom (1 Pt 3:15). Although the world baits, tests, and fears authentic Christians, it holds them in great esteem (Acts 5:13), while despising phony, lukewarm Christians.
May we all be authentic Christians, a people to be reckoned with and worthy of being persecuted for love of Jesus.
Prayer: Father, may zeal for Your house consume me (Jn 2:17).
Promise: " 'Here I am,' I said; 'send me!' " -Is 6:8
Praise: As Fr. Juan suffered from terminal cancer, he publicly witnessed to his faith in Jesus by proclaiming: "I don't know what the future holds, but I know Who holds the future."

I WILL IF YOU WILL
"You will be brought to trial before rulers and kings, to give witness before them and before the Gentiles on My account." -Matthew 10:18
We may have promised Jesus that we would speak up for Him if He would give us the words. Many times, however, He wants us to speak up first, and then He'll give us the words. Jesus said: "When they hand you over, do not worry about what you will say or how you will say it. When the hour comes, you will be given what you are to say. You yourselves will not be the speakers; the Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you" (Mt 10:19-20).
Sometimes the Lord calls us to make the first move. The Lord commanded and promised: "Open wide your mouth and I will fill it" (Ps 81:11). Faith is confident assurance about things we don't see (Heb 11:1). When we open our mouths for Jesus without knowing what to say, we are walking by faith. Love is laying down our lives for others (1 Jn 3:16). When we speak, not concerned about how we look but rather concerned about the salvation of others, we are laying down our lives and truly loving our neighbor and our God.
Sometimes, the Lord gives us the word beforehand. At other times, however, faith and love lead the way. "Do whatever He tells you" (Jn 2:5).

I WILL IF YOU WILL
"You will be brought to trial before rulers and kings, to give witness before them and before the Gentiles on My account." -Matthew 10:18
We may have promised Jesus that we would speak up for Him if He would give us the words. Many times, however, He wants us to speak up first, and then He'll give us the words. Jesus said: "When they hand you over, do not worry about what you will say or how you will say it. When the hour comes, you will be given what you are to say. You yourselves will not be the speakers; the Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you" (Mt 10:19-20).
Sometimes the Lord calls us to make the first move. The Lord commanded and promised: "Open wide your mouth and I will fill it" (Ps 81:11). Faith is confident assurance about things we don't see (Heb 11:1). When we open our mouths for Jesus without knowing what to say, we are walking by faith. Love is laying down our lives for others (1 Jn 3:16). When we speak, not concerned about how we look but rather concerned about the salvation of others, we are laying down our lives and truly loving our neighbor and our God.
Sometimes, the Lord gives us the word beforehand. At other times, however, faith and love lead the way. "Do whatever He tells you" (Jn 2:5).

BABY STEPS
"It was I Who taught Ephraim to walk, Who took them in My arms." -Hosea 11:3
When we were baptized, we received a new nature. We became new creations (Gal 6:15) and infants in Christ (1 Cor 3:1). Like all infants, we need to learn how to live. God our Father wants to teach us how to walk (Hos 11:3), eat, feel, think, hear, see, talk, pray, work, etc. If we realize our total dependence on Him, we will not stunt our growth by trying to teach ourselves how to live. Then we will learn how to do everything our Father wants us to do. We will learn to "cure the sick, raise the dead, heal the leprous, expel demons" (Mt 10:8). Our Father will make us "fully mature and lacking in nothing" (Jas 1:4). He will make us holy as He is holy (1 Pt 1:16) and perfect as He is perfect (Mt 5:48).
The Church calls us to focus on the Holy Spirit. Let the Holy Spirit cry out in our hearts "Abba," that is, "Father" (Gal 4:6; Rm 8:15). Trusting in Him and completely dependent on Him, we will learn to live to the point that we will do even greater things than Jesus has done (Jn 14:12).
Prayer: Abba, if necessary, may I unlearn what I know so You can teach me how to live.
Promise: "The kingdom of God is at hand!" -Mt 10:7, our transl.
Praise: Marvin built a church building for his town and a motel that he managed for many years. In his seventies, Marvin acted on a life-long call to the priesthood. He was ordained at age eighty. He converted his motel into a successful retreat center, and was appointed pastor of the church that he built, doubling his congregation by the time he died at age ninety-five.

When we were baptized, we received a new nature. We became new creations (Gal 6:15) and infants in Christ (1 Cor 3:1). Like all infants, we need to learn how to live. God our Father wants to teach us how to walk (Hos 11:3), eat, feel, think, hear, see, talk, pray, work, etc. If we realize our total dependence on Him, we will not stunt our growth by trying to teach ourselves how to live. FEEDER SYSTEM
"The reign of God is at hand!" -Matthew 10:7
In today's Gospel, Jesus chose twelve new men, His apostles (Mt 10:2-4). He commissioned them, and us, to be new Josephs, to be absorbed in distributing the Word of the Lord in times of famine and in times of plenty. The children of the New Covenant are to be distributors of food like the Old Testament patriarch Joseph, who fed the whole world (see Gn 42:6).
From this point on in Matthew's Gospel, Jesus will be teaching and feeding His apostles. After building them up, He will send them out to feed His people with His Word (Jn 21:15-17). The apostles then feed others, who in turn grow strong enough to feed still others. God intends that this feeder system perpetuate itself so His Word continues to spread (see Acts 6:7).
We are to be the Master's good stewards, occupied with distributing physical and spiritual food (Mt 24:45). Like the apostles, we have been fed by the Master on a steady diet of Word and Eucharist. Thus built up, we are able to feed His sheep (Jn 21:17) and keep them alive and thriving in times of famine (Ps 33:19).
Amos prophesied that there would be a famine not for food, but for hearing the Word of the Lord (Am 8:11). Therefore, distribute God's Word, teaching in-season and out-of-season (2 Tm 4:2).
Prayer: "May Your kindness, O Lord, be upon us who have put our hope in You" (Ps 33:22).
Promise: "Break up for yourselves a new field, for it is time to seek the Lord." -Hos 10:12
Praise: The 120 Chinese Martyrs, who included men, women, and children, priests, religious, and lay people, showed the depth of their faith by giving everything, including their lives, to Jesus.

"Cast away your calf, O Samaria!" -Hosea 8:5
After Solomon's death, Jeroboam seized control of the ten northern tribes of Israel. He knew his subjects would go south to worship in Jerusalem, thus eroding his power base and personal safety (1 Kgs 12:26-27). So Jeroboam sold out in order to keep himself rolling in power and money. He set aside truth and set up a new religion and culture. He built two golden calves (1 Kgs 12:28; see Ex 32:8), which were nothing less than idols, and told the people that the shrines of these calves were the "in" places to worship God. He relieved them of the "obligation" to travel to Jerusalem, making worship convenient and cheaper. The people were focused on convenience and money, not true worship of God. So they swallowed Jeroboam's scheme hook, line, and sinker.
Hosea addresses the idolatrous northern tribes of Israel: "Cast away your calf, O Samaria!" (Hos 8:5) He also addresses us. Hosea screams, "Cast away your TV and smartphones!" Some modern-day Jeroboams proclaim convenience and wealth. They have gradually shaped a culture which worships at the movies and the home entertainment center. They've relegated Sunday to a day of convenience rather than a day dedicated to worshiping God. These culture-destroyers produce TV programs, newspaper and magazine articles, and movies calculated to increase their own wealth rather than promote the glory of God and the good of humanity (Ez 34:2). Why do we follow them?
Jesus cast aside His own glory and humbled Himself out of love for us (Phil 2:7-8). "Cast away your calf" and labor for Jesus' harvest. In Jesus name, create a holy culture of life.
Prayer: Jesus, I cast my cares on you (1 Pt 5:7) and I cast out of my life anything that distracts me from You.
Promise: "When they sow the wind, they shall reap the whirlwind." -Hos 8:7
Praise: Charles not only worships on Sunday but brings the Eucharist to those who can't get to Mass.
