September 14th Exaltation of the Holy Cross


Oh! Jesus, what sorrow can be more painful then a mother
watching her beloved Son die a most horrible death.

This week our church honors Mary of "Lady of sorrows" who
stood at Your cross and saw You die.

Yet her faith was not dimmed, because her trust in the
Father continued.

Please, oh! Jesus, give us some of that faith that we might
continue to face all the problems of life with the faith of Mary.

Lord, let us give You praise and glory throughout our lives.

Lord, let us have the peace that only You can give, and let
Your love guide us always.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

Sunday "WHEN I BEHOLD THE WONDROUS CROSS..."

"He humbled Himself, obediently accepting even death, death on a
cross!" -Philippians 2:8

We sing: "When I behold the wondrous cross on which the Prince of
glory died, my richest gain I count but loss and pour contempt on
all my pride." At the cross, our values change, and we get in touch
with reality. At the cross, we humble ourselves. Through the cross,
Jesus' name was exalted above every other name (Phil 2:9), and we
who believe in the crucified and glorified Jesus share in His
exaltation. Those who humble themselves at the cross will be
exalted (Mt 23:12).

We sing: "At the cross, at the cross, there's a precious fountain."
When we behold the wondrous cross, we receive the living waters of
the Holy Spirit (Gal 3:1-2). We are bathed in healing (see Nm 21:9),
faith, and eternal life (Jn 3:14-15).

We sing: "Lift high the cross! The love of Christ proclaim." We must
know nothing and say nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified
(1 Cor 2:2). We must boast of nothing but the cross of our Lord Jesus
Christ through which we have been crucified to the world and the
world to us (Gal 6:14).

Each day of the rest of your life, prayerfully look at an image of
Jesus on the cross. Let the crucified Jesus speak to your heart.
"Behold the wondrous cross."


Prayer: Father, let me "bear the brand marks of Jesus in my body"
(Gal 6:17).

Promise: "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that
whoever believes in Him may not die but may have eternal life." -Jn 3:16

Praise: "We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You because by Your
holy cross You have redeemed the world."

Lord I pray that I be a strong husband, offering love and security to
my wife and our unborn child. I pray that we may be supported by a
community of close friends and relatives at this critical time in our
marriage. May my wife have a good rest after giving birth and may we
be able to visit our parents back home during her leave. May her
employer grant her, her maternity leave entitlements without delay.
The employer has been known to have taken advantage of foreign
employees. May my wife not be taken advantage of Lord. Have mercy upon
us we need miracles, especialy help me with securing a job to support
my family. Amen.

"ONE BREAD, ONE BODY"

"Because the loaf of bread is one, we, many though we are, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf." -1 Corinthians 10:17

The title of these booklets is taken from the above Scripture. Because we share in the one bread of Holy Communion, we are one body. If we are one as Jesus and the Father are one, then the world will believe that the Father sent the Son (Jn 17:21), God's plan of salvation will be fulfilled, and God's kingdom will have come "on earth as it is in heaven."
Our unity is absolutely essential. Jesus came to break down the barriers and make the two into one (Eph 2:14). In one Spirit, all of us have been baptized into one body (1 Cor 12:13). It is not only "good" and "pleasant, where brethren dwell at one" (Ps 133:1), it's an absolute necessity. For example, it is not just "good" for your hands to be connected to the other parts of your body; it is a "must."
Because unity is a necessity, partaking of the one bread, that is, Communion, is a necessity. This booklet is written to motivate us to receive Holy Communion daily. If done in the right spirit, this is among the most important acts of faith we can make in the Christian life.


Prayer: Jesus, at this moment, may hundreds decide to receive Holy Communion daily.

Promise: "Each man speaks from his heart's abundance. Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not put into practice what I teach you?" -Lk 6:45-46

Praise: St. John preached the Truth even to a heretic patriarch and empress. He was exiled twice for his public stand for holiness.

BLIND AS A BAT IN HELL

"Can a blind man act as guide to a blind man? Will they not both fall into a ditch?" -Luke 6:39

Because we all have inherited a nature fallen due to sin, we all have been or are partially blind spiritually. This applies to Christian leaders as well; therefore, the spiritually blind frequently lead the spiritually blind. Before our redemption by Christ, there was no other possibility. Before Christ, we were doomed to fall into the ditch of slavery, self-hatred, damnation, and hell. Before Christ, we were doomed to lead even the people we most love into the ditch of terrifying, everlasting self-destruction.
Jesus has saved us from spiritual blindness, from the ditch of hell, and from destroying forever even those we love. Because of what Jesus has done for us, we should:
* thank Him always (1 Thes 5:18; Eph 5:20),
* accept His grace to overcome all temptations to sin and thereby never return to blindness,
* preach the gospel (1 Cor 9:16),
* make ourselves the slaves "of all so as to win over as many as possible" (1 Cor 9:19),
* do all that we "do for the sake of the gospel" (1 Cor 9:23), and
* discipline our bodies and master them so that we will persevere in the faith (1 Cor 9:27) and reach even the hardest hearts.

Jesus has saved us from a fate far worse than death. Thank You, Jesus!


Prayer: Father, I will share my faith because people's everlasting life depends on it.

Promise: "Remove the plank from your own eye first; then you will see clearly enough to remove the speck from your brother's eye." -Lk 6:42

Praise: Praise You, Holy Spirit, for overshadowing Mary, Your Spouse (Lk 1:35). "Nothing is impossible with" You (Lk 1:37).

DRESSING DOWN WITH JESUS

"When you sin thus against your brothers and wound their weak consciences, you are sinning against Christ." -1 Corinthians 8:12

Today's first reading teaches about giving up your personal freedoms for the good of the rest of the members of the Body of Christ. One aspect of personal liberty which needs to be submitted to the will of God is modesty in dress. Do we dress our way or God's way?
Jesus "dresses down" in the Eucharist. He humbly appears as bread. If He appeared in His full glory, we would catch on fire and melt. Many young women, and some older ones, often dress in such a way that men catch on fire and melt. It's especially a problem when a female dresses immodestly in Church. Young and old men who come to a holy place to try to grow in holiness are instead tempted to catch fire and burn (see 1 Cor 7:9) - at the very place where they shouldn't have to be anxious about being tempted.
Women of Christ, your adornment should not be an external one but rather an internal one (see 1 Pt 3:3ff). Make sure that you don't become a stumbling block to any member of the Body of Christ (1 Cor 8:9). Immodest dress, especially in Church, undermines the atmosphere of holiness in the house of God as He brings His family together.
Jesus' body is presented humbly at Mass. Let us likewise present our bodies humbly and simply to Him. Let us do all we do, including clothing ourselves, for the glory of God (1 Cor 10:31).


Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are my Master (Rm 14:7). This is my body, to be given up for You.

Promise: "Be compassionate, as your Father is compassionate." -Lk 6:36

Praise: Melissa coordinates fashion shows which model modest yet fashionable women's clothing, so that her teenage daughters and other young women will be encouraged to dress modestly.

SINGLES-HANDED

"Are you free of a wife? If so, do not go in search of one." -1 Corinthians 7:27

Those gifted to be single for the Lord do not commit sin if they marry (1 Cor 7:28). "But such people will have trials in this life, and these I should like to spare you" (1 Cor 7:28). All people have trials; so Paul must have been referring to unnecessary, additional trials. Moreover, it is sometimes good to undergo trials. However, Paul must not have been referring to "good" trials, or he would not have tried to spare anyone these trials. In summary, in the Scriptures the Lord indicates that those who marry but were called to be single will have unnecessary, additional trials, which it would have been better not to have undergone.
Is the Lord trying to show those who are single the way to the easiest, most comfortable life? No, He is trying to keep singles as free as possible to help them devote themselves entirely to Him (1 Cor 7:35). Some people in the Body of Christ need to be available for anything at any time to further God's kingdom. They must not be tied down by unnecessary trials. The exceptional freedom and availability of those single for the Lord is not for their ease and comfort; rather, it is for the good of the Body of Christ.

Prayer: Father, raise up a mighty army of virgins.

Promise: "The world as we know it is passing away." -1 Cor 7:31

Praise: Although her brothers and sisters advised her to get out, Martha stayed in her marriage and prayed for her often-drunk husband. God answered Martha's prayers and he was converted.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

"Do not deceive yourselves: no fornicators, idolaters, or adulterers, no sodomites, thieves, misers, or drunkards, no slanderers or robbers will inherit God's kingdom." -1 Corinthians 6:9-10

"Make no mistake about this: no fornicator, no unclean or lustful person - in effect an idolater - has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with worthless arguments. These are sins that bring God's wrath down on the disobedient; therefore have nothing to do with" these sins (Eph 5:5-6).
Notice that in both passages above, from 1 Corinthians and Ephesians, the language does not refer to sin but to sinners. These sinners are so entrenched in their chief sin that they can be identified by its name. For instance, an adulterer is someone who is committed to adultery and has not repented of it. The adulterer has lost his identity and is now identified by the name of the sin that he keeps committing. By contrast, a person so entrenched in Jesus and His lifestyle of obedience and righteousness is identified by the name of the One to Whom he has committed: Christian.
Many people are fornicators, adulterers, drunkards, slanderers, sodomizers, etc. Since it's commonplace, we can be deceived into thinking these lifestyles are acceptable. Do not be deceived! (1 Cor 6:9) All arguments to the contrary are worthless (Eph 5:6). Some of us were once entrenched in these sins (1 Cor 6:11), and some still are. So repent immediately! Invite others to do the same. "The person who brings a sinner back from his way will save his soul from death and cancel a multitude of sins" (Jas 5:20).


Prayer: Father, may I love sinners enough to share hard scriptures with them.

Promise: "Power went out from Him which cured all." -Lk 6:19

Praise: St. Peter ministered to the "least of the brethren" by reaching out to countless slaves when he went to the New World to save "millions of those perishing souls."
