"COME TO THE FEAST" (Mt 22:4)
"He will destroy death forever." -Isaiah 25:8
Fifteen years ago this week, I received a phone call informing me that Father Al Lauer, founder and long-time author of One Bread, One Body, died. Father Al had been suffering from cancer of the liver. That same morning, Mass was celebrated in Father's bedroom. The Word of God came to life in that Mass as today's Scripture readings, which were also proclaimed in 2002 in the repeating Sunday liturgical cycle, proclaimed the glorious future that would lie in store for this dying, saintly man of faith. On his last day on earth, Father heard the Word of God promise him:
* "I shall dwell in the house of the Lord" (Ps 23:6).
* "On that day it will be said:'Behold our God, to Whom we looked to save us! This is the Lord for Whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that He has saved us!' " (Is 25:9)
* "Tell those who were invited, See, I have My dinner prepared!...Everything is ready. Come to the feast" (Mt 22:4).
* "My God in turn will supply your needs fully, in a way worthy of His magnificent riches in Christ Jesus. All glory to our God and Father for unending ages!" (Phil 4:19-20)
"Happy now are the dead who die in the Lord! The Spirit added, 'Yes, they shall find rest from their labors, for their good works accompany them' " (Rv 14:13). Father's motto in his parish ministry was: "Fix your eyes on Jesus" (Heb 3:1). We rejoice to know that Father Al's eyes are forever fixed on Jesus!
Prayer: Father, grant eternal rest to the soul of Father Al Lauer and to all the souls of the faithful departed.
Promise: "The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. In verdant pastures He gives me repose; beside restful waters He leads me; He refreshes my soul." -Ps 23:1-3
Praise: Glory and honor to You, Lord Jesus Christ!

"Blest are they who hear the word of God and keep it." -Luke 11:28
A woman exclaimed that Mary was blessed by being the mother of Jesus (Lk 11:27). Jesus replied that those "who hear the Word of God and keep it" are more greatly blessed.
Many of us have been blessed with good health, great wealth, many children, beautiful families, fame, exceptional intelligence, success in business, power, abundant possessions, or countless other blessings. Nevertheless, none of these blessings can compare with hearing the Word of God and keeping it, for God's law and Word are "more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces" (Ps 119:72). When we hear God's Word, we hear God and thereby grow in faith (Rm 10:17) by which we accept the grace of salvation (Eph 2:8). Jesus promised: "My mother and My brothers are those who hear the word of God and act upon it" (Lk 8:21). "Blest are your eyes because they see and blest are your ears because they hear. I assure you, many a prophet and many a saint longed to see what you see but did not see it, to hear what you hear but did not hear it" (Mt 13:16-17).
"Blest is the man who reads this prophetic message, and blest are those who hear it and heed what is written in it, for the appointed time is near!" (Rv 1:3, our transl)
Prayer: Father, may I let You "bless me real good."
Promise: "A fountain shall issue from the house of the Lord." -Jl 4:18
Praise: The future Pope St. Callistus I learned to pray to the Sardinian martyrs in the Sardinian mines. The Lord enabled him to demonstrate extraordinary forgiveness throughout his life.

RADICAL AND FANATICAL
"Blow the trumpet in Zion, sound the alarm on My holy mountain!" -Joel 2:1
Imagine walking into church only to find your pastor prostrate before the altar, weeping and wailing in repentance for his sins and those of God's people (Jl 1:13). "The wages of sin is death" (Rm 6:23). God is beginning to pay us our wages. In fact, we are getting not only death but what Pope St. John Paul II called a whole "culture of death." We have even more reason to cry and repent than did the people of Joel's time.
We must not minimize or euphemize the deadly effects of sin. We should not take the effects of sin in stride but take them very hard - hard enough to cry and wail, hard enough to break out of the status quo and declare a state of emergency. Our problem is not that things are bad. Rather, our problem is: we are in denial that our situation is that bad. Sin is the worst evil possible. Countless people are living in sin. Therefore, we are in a true emergency, even in a society of contrived emergencies.
In a state of emergency, only those who seem to be fanatics are acting sanely. Sin is worth getting very upset and sad about. "Indeed, sorrow for God's sake produces a repentance without regrets, leading to salvation, whereas worldly sorrow brings death. Just look at the fruit of this sorrow which stems from God. What a measure of holy zeal it has brought you...What indignation, fear, and longing! What ardent desire to restore the balance of justice!" (2 Cor 7:10-11)
Therefore, get radical; get fanatical about repentance.
Prayer: Father, may there be more sorrow on earth over one sinner who doesn't repent (cf Lk 15:7).
Promise: "If it is by the finger of God that I cast out devils, then the reign of God is upon you." -Lk 11:20
Praise: Theresa not only goes to Mass daily, but spends time in adoration.

KNOCK, KNOCK
"Knock and it shall be opened to you." -Luke 11:9
We are accustomed to thinking we are the ones knocking and God is the One Who is not answering. In reality, God is the One knocking at the door of our heart (see Rv 3:20). We are like the man inside the house in today's Gospel passage (Lk 11:7); we tend to not want to get up out of bed for morning Mass or prayer.
In truth, even the most hardened sinner on the planet has been given sufficient grace to raise his or her heart to God in prayer. God calmly and quietly and constantly knocks on the door of every human heart. Many, however, drown out the quiet sound of His knocking with the noise of this world. Let us ask, knock, and seek for these people to accept the grace to open their hearts to the Lord.
The way we ask, knock, and seek is to beg the Lord to give us an all-consuming desire for holiness. Ask in more faith, with more persistence (Lk 18:1). Ask for people, both great and small, to be converted to faith in the Lord. Ask with persistence and perseverance.
Prayer: Father, may I spend the rest of my life faithfully interceding for many thousands of people to accept the salvation You offer them.
Promise: "For you who fear My name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays." -Mal 3:20
Praise: Joan prays several times a day for her children to mature in the Faith.

THE DEATH WISH
"I would be better off dead than alive." -Jonah 4:8
Jonah prayed: "And now, Lord, please take my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live" (Jon 4:3). Jonah wanted to die because a worm killed his shade tree and left him uncomfortably hot (Jon 4:6-8). In effect, Jonah said: "Give me comfort or give me death." Jonah also wanted to die because the Lord forgave the Ninevites (Jon 4:1) instead of punishing them. These two reasons for wanting to die are connected.
Sometimes many of us also wish we were dead. Like Jonah, we feel sad about not having all the pleasures and comforts we want. We feel such a need for these creature comforts because of an emptiness inside. This emptiness may be a symptom of unforgiveness. When we refuse to forgive the Ninevites in our lives, we cut ourselves off from being forgiven (Mt 6:12), healed (Sir 28:2-3), and blessed. We deprive and curse ourselves. Then we try to compensate for our emptiness by stuffing ourselves with the things of the world. When we are stuffed, and consequently more empty, we become so discouraged that we wish we were dead (see Prv 13:19). Unforgiveness leads to emptiness and pleasure-seeking, which leads to more emptiness and despair. The only way to escape the death wish is to forgive by giving our lives to Jesus and repenting.
Give; forgive; be full and fulfilled; love life.
Prayer: Father, I decide to forgive instead of being handed over to the torturers (Mt 18:34).
Promise: "Forgive us our sins for we too forgive all who do us wrong; and subject us not to the trial." -Lk 11:4
Praise: Roger was anti-Christian. His wife attended daily Mass. Roger gave his life to Jesus on Good Friday to the joy of his wife.

Sometimes many of us also wish we were dead. Like Jonah, we feel sad about not having all the pleasures and comforts we want. We feel such a need for these creature comforts because of an emptiness inside. This emptiness may be a symptom of unforgiveness. When we refuse to forgive the Ninevites in our lives, we cut ourselves off from being forgiven (Mt 6:12), healed (Sir 28:2-3), and blessed. We deprive and curse ourselves. Then we try to compensate for our emptiness by stuffing ourselves with the things of the world. When we are stuffed, and consequently more empty, we become so discouraged that we wish we were dead (see Prv 13:19). Unforgiveness leads to emptiness and pleasure-seeking, which leads to more emptiness and despair. The only way to escape the death wish is to forgive by giving our lives to Jesus and repenting.
Give; forgive; be full and fulfilled; love life.
Prayer: Father, I decide to forgive instead of being handed over to the torturers (Mt 18:34).
Promise: "Forgive us our sins for we too forgive all who do us wrong; and subject us not to the trial." -Lk 11:4
Praise: Roger was anti-Christian. His wife attended daily Mass. Roger gave his life to Jesus on Good Friday to the joy of his wife.

BETTER, NOT BITTER
"Mary has chosen the better portion and she shall not be deprived of it." -Luke 10:42
Jesus declared: "If you live according to My teaching, you are truly My disciples; then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (Jn 8:31-32). Mary did so in today's Gospel reading. She sat beside the Lord's feet and received the better portion.
The people of Nineveh also received the better portion. They, too, listened to the Lord's words delivered through the prophet Jonah (Jon 3:1ff). The people of Nineveh repented and the Lord did not mark their iniquities (Ps 130:3-4; Jon 3:5), but rather marked their repentance (Jon 3:10). Repentant, humbled hearts and changed lifestyles (see Jas 4:6) are true indicators of having listened to the Word of God.
Incidentally, Martha also chose the better portion. Her words to Jesus in John 11:27 give evidence that she understood Jesus was the Messiah Who would bring eternal life. Indeed, Martha was the sister who became a canonized saint. The Ninevites and Martha received the correction of God's Word and changed their lives to align with it. They could have become resentful and bitter. Instead, they repented and chose the better portion instead of the bitter portion.
Prayer: Father, help me to choose to live a life spent meditating upon and obedient to Your Word.
Promise: "If You, O Lord, mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand? But with You is forgiveness, that You may be revered." -Ps 130:3-4
Praise: Betrayed by his business partner, Stephan put his trust in his Savior and forgave his former partner.

LIVING A HELL OF A LIFE?
Jonah "paid the fare, and went aboard to journey with them to Tarshish, away from the Lord." -Jonah 1:3
Jonah refused to go to the Ninevites and tell them to repent (Jon 1:2ff). When he refused to do God's will, he could not stay where he was; instead, he felt compelled to flee (Jon 1:3). In his flight, Jonah caused a "furious tempest" (Jon 1:4). Next, he was thrown into the sea and swallowed by a large fish, in whose belly he remained for "three days and three nights" (Jon 1:15-2:1). Then Jonah was regurgitated onto the shore (Jon 2:11).
If we say "no" to living with God, we begin living hell. We separate ourselves from God and turn our lives into "a violent wind" and "furious tempest" (Jon 1:4). If we refuse to do God's will, we will feel as if we are drowning and swallowed alive by circumstances beyond our control. In our sin, we live in a cavernous darkness, and like a dog we return to our vomit (see 2 Pt 2:22) until we are thrown up.
"The Lord, indeed, knows how to...continue the punishment of the wicked up to the day of judgment" (2 Pt 2:9). A life of selfishness, disobedience, and sin has its pleasures but also its horrors - not only after death but also before death. Live the only good life. Give yourself to Jesus, "the Way, and the Truth, and the Life" (Jn 14:6).
Prayer: Father, may I repent and do penance.
Promise: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." -Lk 10:27
Praise: St. Denis evangelized the Franks. In return, he was martyred with his companions Fr. Rusticus and deacon Eleutherius.
