JUST YOU
"Whoever would preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will preserve it." -Mark 8:35
Jesus' first question to His disciples was not "Who do you say that I am?" (Mk 8:29) Jesus felt compelled to introduce the big question with another question: "Who do people say that I am?" (Mk 8:27) He intentionally set up the contrast between what others say and what we individually say.
When we give our lives to Jesus, we make a personal, individual decision. The saying goes: "God has no grandchildren." That means we are all called to relate to Him directly and not "once removed." We can't live on what our fathers, mothers, pastors, or teachers told us. We must know Jesus personally, not just know about Him. We have to stand on our own faith, not on anyone else's.
As individuals, "we shall all have to appear before the judgment seat of God" (Rm 14:10). It won't matter if we're better or worse. God does not compare His children. Each of us lives, dies, and is judged on the basis of his or her individual response to God's grace. Jesus' question remains: "Who do you say that I am?"
Prayer: Jesus, I repent of my sins. Forgive me, come into my heart, take over my life. Fill me with Your Spirit. You are my Lord.
Promise: "Morning after morning He opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back." -Is 50:4-5
Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, God of forgiveness, mercy, and love.

EVER CLOSER TO THE CROSS
"Near the cross of Jesus there stood His mother." -John 19:25
The cross, because it was an instrument for executing criminals, is naturally repulsive to us. Nevertheless, Jesus wants us near His cross. He even wants us to live our whole lives in the shadow of the cross by taking up our daily cross (Lk 9:23). He wants us to come to the point that we will boast of nothing but Jesus' cross and sharing in it (see Gal 6:14).
Jesus has given His mother Mary to all His disciples to help overcome our revulsion of the cross and to keep us near the cross. We naturally want to distance ourselves from the rejection we risk in reaching out to others, the persecution suffered as we stand up for our faith, the pain of forgiving our enemies, the stress of faithfulness in our vocations, and the sacrifice of serving others. Yet the Lord graces us to stay near these crosses. He calls us to take our mother Mary's hand as she gathers her children around her at the foot of the cross. There we follow Jesus, learn the deep meaning of love, and enter into the mystery of God's plan of salvation. With Mary, stay near the cross.
Prayer: "O sweet Mother! Font of love, touch my spirit from above, make my heart with yours accord."
Promise: "Son though He was, He learned obedience from what He suffered; and when perfected, He became the Source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him." -Heb 5:8-9
Praise: "Christ, when You shall call me hence, be Your mother my defense, be Your cross my victory. While my body here decays, may my soul Your goodness praise, safe in heaven eternally. Amen. Alleluia."

"Because of this, God highly exalted Him." -Philippians 2:9
The cross is the ultimate symbol of shame and defeat, both the public shaming of a criminal and an agonizing, slow death. Jesus overturned the defeat of the cross and has transformed the cross into a symbol of victory. Many Christians wear a cross around their necks as a sign of victory for all who believe in Jesus crucified and risen.
The serpent mounted on a pole is a "type" of the cross. The serpents in the desert were an instrument of death for the Hebrews, but became a sign of life once mounted on the pole. Our lives are to be such a sign also. "Continually we carry about in our bodies the dying of Jesus, so that in our bodies the life of Jesus may also be revealed. While we live we are constantly being delivered to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be revealed in our mortal flesh" (2 Cor 4:10-11). We deny our very selves, take up our daily cross (Lk 9:23), and crucify ourselves to the world (Gal 6:14). To those living under the influence of the world, the flesh, and the devil (1 Jn 2:16), we seem dead, yet we are for them like that serpent mounted on the pole, or Jesus hanging on the cross. When those who dismiss us are hurting, it is we to whom they may turn for compassion, healing, or encouragement.
"Mercy triumphs over judgment" (Jas 2:13). The crucified Jesus triumphs over death, sin, and pride. Jesus has overcome the world (Jn 16:33). We have to celebrate and rejoice (Lk 15:32). Jesus has won the victory. Carrying our cross leads to risen life and triumph. In Jesus crucified, we are more than conquerors (Rm 8:37). Alleluia!
Prayer: Jesus, keep me "near the cross."
Promise: "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not die but may have eternal life." -Jn 3:16
Praise: "We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world."

"There is one God, the Father, from Whom all things come and for Whom we live." -1 Corinthians 8:6
After the consecration at Mass, at the finale of the Eucharistic prayer and just before Holy Communion, we pray in reference to Jesus: "Through Him, with Him, and in Him..." When we pray these words at this most precious moment, are we giving lip service to God (see Mt 15:8), or are we saying that " 'life' means Christ" (Phil 1:21) and Jesus is Life? (Jn 14:6)
Is everything in our lives done "through Him"? Do we realize emphatically that without Jesus we can do nothing? (Jn 15:5) Are we little children who depend completely on the Lord (Mt 18:3), or are we trying to do our own thing?
Do we live conscious of being "with Him"? Do we practice the presence of God? Are we constantly aware of Jesus' promise that He would be with us always and forever? (Mt 28:20)
Are we aware that the Trinity lives "in" us and we "in" Him? "Test yourselves to see whether you are living in faith; examine yourselves. Perhaps you yourselves do not realize that Christ Jesus is in you" (2 Cor 13:5).
Jesus is the only "Through-Way." We don't need to be "with it" but "with Him." Who cares about the "in thing?" We live in God and He in us (1 Jn 4:16). Live and pray: "Through Him, with Him, and in Him..."
Prayer: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I have been baptized into You (Mt 28:19). May I live accordingly.
Promise: "To you who hear Me, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you; bless those who curse you and pray for those who maltreat you." -Lk 6:27-28
Praise: St. John Chrysostom accepted the spiritual gift of preaching. His anointed sermons still touch many today in the office of Readings in the Liturgy of the Hours.

THE BEATITUDES ARE NOT OPTIONAL - One Bread, One Body, 9/12/2018

THE BEATITUDES ARE NOT OPTIONAL
"The world as we know it is passing away." -1 Corinthians 7:31
St. Paul, in today's first Eucharistic reading, is bringing out the very message of Luke's Beatitudes in today's Gospel reading. We are not made only for this world, and there is more to life than this world. Jesus teaches that trying to live by the values of this world does not bring happiness that endures. Additionally, living by the world's standards actually brings disaster, not happiness. Woe to those who don't see this (Lk 6:24-26), for the world as we know it is passing away (1 Cor 7:31).
So let us live for God and not for ourselves (2 Cor 5:15). Jesus teaches that this is the way to true happiness on this earth (Lk 6:20-23). Living the Beatitudes is not merely a nice option for some Christians. Rather, Jesus proclaims that disaster and woe will befall us if we don't live the Beatitudes.
Jesus is the Way to happiness (Jn 14:6). Follow His directions.
Prayer: King Jesus, I sell everything to be in Your kingdom (Mt 13:44-46).
Promise: "The time is short." -1 Cor 7:29
Praise: Father Steve has devoted his priestly ministry to defending Mary's perpetual virginity and her importance in God's plan of salvation.

CHOSEN TO PRAY THE MARATHON?
"Then He went out to the mountain to pray, spending the night in communion with God." -Luke 6:12
In imitation of Christ, we are sometimes called to spend several hours in prayerful communion with God (Lk 6:12). This may be a vigil, a day or night of recollection, or a retreat. After we spend these special, extended times with the Lord, He sometimes raises up leaders for His Church (see Lk 6:13ff). Then He may cure those "troubled with unclean spirits" and all those suffering from diseases (Lk 6:18-19). When the Lord calls us to extended times of prayer, we have reason to rejoice, for the grace to pray for an extended time is often followed by many other graces, as the Lord chooses leaders, drives out demons, heals the sick, etc.
Is the Lord calling you to pray for long periods of time? We may receive this calling only infrequently. Therefore, when we have been called to spend the day or night in prayer, we should thank the Lord for the privilege of having this grace. We should accept it enthusiastically with joyful anticipation of many other graces for the whole body of Christ and ourselves.
Pray. Pray more. Pray for days and nights when the Lord calls.
Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach us to pray for extended times.
Promise: "Do not deceive yourselves: no fornicators, idolaters, or adulterers, no sodomites, thieves, misers, or drunkards, no slanderers or robbers will inherit God's kingdom." -1 Cor 6:9-10
Praise: An all-night prayer vigil changed Carolyn's life. Now she lives her life gladly following the will of God.

WARPED BY SIN?
"On another sabbath He came to teach in a synagogue where there was a man whose right hand was withered." -Luke 6:6
Imagine seeing a man whose right hand was withered. There would be many things he could not do and other things he could do only with great difficulty. He might even feel embarrassed if someone tried to shake his withered hand. If you have any love in your heart, you would want to help this man. How much joy you would feel when Jesus restored the man's hand perfectly and instantly! (Lk 6:10) However, the scribes and Pharisees reacted differently. "They became frenzied and began asking one another what could be done to Jesus" (Lk 6:11).
"A little yeast has its effect all through the dough" (1 Cor 5:6). The religious leaders of Jesus' time were jealous of Jesus (Mt 27:18) and full of pride and selfishness (see Mt 23:5ff). This yeast affected their whole lives to the point that they did not love enough to even rejoice in the healing of the man with the withered hand. Therefore, let us repent of all sin, corruption, and wickedness, or we will be unable to live lives of sincerity, truth, love, and joy (see 1 Cor 5:8).
Prayer: Father, I repent and ask You to remove the cancer of sin from my life.
Promise: "Let all who take refuge in You be glad and exult forever. Protect them, that You may be the joy of those who love Your name." -Ps 5:12
Praise: Don and Monica, a married couple, both received the spiritual gift of healing. For years they have ministered to hurting people together. God has used them to heal many of physical, spiritual, and emotional ailments.
