"Who is this Man Who utters blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?" —Luke 5:21

Jesus always has forgiveness on His mind. The roof literally falls in, but Jesus responds: “My friend, your sins are forgiven you” (Lk 5:20). A man lies before Him paralyzed and Jesus says: “The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” (Lk 5:24). The apostles ask Jesus to teach them to pray and Jesus replies: “Forgive us the wrong we have done as we forgive those who wrong us” (Mt 6:12). Even while hanging on the cross, among His last words Jesus kept saying: “Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing” (Lk 23:34).

“You can depend on this as worthy of full acceptance: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Tm 1:15). “I tell you, there will likewise be more joy in heaven over one repentant sinner than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need to repent” (Lk 15:7). Jesus is the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world (Jn 1:29). He is preoccupied with the forgiveness of sin.

If we ask Jesus about our Christmas presents, He’ll offer to forgive our sins. If we complain about our troubles, He’ll call us to Confession. If we blame our spouse for something, Jesus will talk to us about the plank in our own eye (Mt 7:3). When Jesus thinks of Christmas, He thinks of the forgiveness of sins through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Go to Confession. Give Jesus the Christmas present of your repentance.

Prayer: Jesus, baptize me in repentance. Send the Spirit to search my heart. May I repent on the deepest level.

Promise: "They will meet with joy and gladness, sorrow and mourning will flee." —Is 35:10

CHRISTMAS COMFORT
"Comfort, give comfort to My people, says your God. Speak tenderly." —Isaiah 40:1-2

The Lord promises to comfort and speak tenderly to us (Is 40:1-2). In today’s second reading, the Church proclaims in the name of the Lord that “the heavens will vanish with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire” (2 Pt 3:10). How comforting! In the Gospel reading, we meet St. John the Baptizer, one of the least comforting characters in the Bible and in history (see Mk 1:2ff). The Lord’s ways are not our ways, and His idea of comfort is not our idea of comfort (see Is 55:8).

The Lord does not want to give us the superficial comfort of temporary relief. Rather, the Lord promises to baptize us in the Holy Spirit (Mk 1:8), the Paraclete, the Comforter (see e.g. Jn 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7). This divine Comforter will free us from generations of slavery, sin, guilt, and punishment (Is 40:2).

Comfort will begin with the Holy Spirit convicting the world and us of sin, justice, and condemnation (Jn 16:8). Then we must let the Spirit lead us from conviction to repentance, confession, and forgiveness. After this, we will personally experience that “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” (2 Cor 3:17).

In the comfort of the Spirit, we will truly enter into the freedom of the Lord. We will displace the culture of death with a civilization of love and life. Come, Holy Spirit of Christmas and comfort!

Prayer: Father, comfort me Your way.

Promise: "Here is your God! Here comes with power the Lord God, Who rules by His strong arm." —Is 40:9-10

Praise: Praise to You, risen Jesus, "Prince of Peace" (Is 9:5). All glory and honor to You. Alleluia!

NO MAN IS AN ISLAND
Jesus said, " 'Beg the Harvest Master to send out laborers to gather His harvest.' Then He summoned His twelve disciples." —Matthew 9:37—10:1

The Lord promised His people happiness, sustenance, guidance, abundance, light, and healing (see Is 30:19ff). Centuries later, Jesus looked at crowds of people and “His heart was moved with pity. They were lying prostrate from exhaustion, like sheep without a shepherd” (Mt 9:36). Are God’s promises true? If so, why aren’t we seeing them fulfilled?

God usually plans it so that we need help to receive His promises. We need laborers for the harvest (Mt 9:37). We need twelve disciples (Mt 10:1), that is, a small community of Christians. We need people and a community to call us to faith in Jesus and total commitment to His kingdom (see Mt 10:7). “How can they believe unless they have heard of Him? And how can they hear unless there is someone to preach?” (Rm 10:14)

Be a laborer in the harvest. Other people need you. Don’t be reluctant to ask others to help you grow close to the Lord. You need others. Try to join or form a small Christian community. You need a community of Christians. As Jesus invested His life in twelve disciples, so should we. Then we will see God’s promises fulfilled.

Prayer: Father, may I see every one of Your promises fulfilled and help others do the same.

Promise: "The gift you have received, give as a gift." —Mt 10:8

Praise: St. Juan Diego gathered a great harvest of converts with his witness.

MARY CHANGES THE MENU
"The woman whom You put here with me — she gave me fruit from the tree, and so I ate it." —Genesis 3:12

Adam and Eve stood at the foot of the tree in the middle of the garden of Eden (see Gn 2:9; 3:3, 6). They were deciding whether or not to eat its fruit. The lying serpent persuaded them to go ahead and eat (Gn 3:1-5). Eve, the first woman, took the fruit, ate it, and gave Adam the forbidden fruit to eat. They ate the fruit of rebellion and disobedience. Thus the original sin was committed.

Mary is the new Eve. In her obedience, she fully reverses what the first Eve had sown in her disobedience. The truthful Immaculate Virgin Mother still stands at the foot of the tree in the middle of the garden of Calvary (Jn 19:25, 41), the “tree” of the cross (Gal 3:13). One of the things Mary reverses is our eating patterns at the foot of the tree. Like the first Eve, Mary also is persuading us to eat of this tree’s fruit (Gn 3:1-5), the flesh of her Son Jesus, the Holy Eucharist (Jn 6:55ff).

Many people have been stuffing themselves with the things of the world (see Prv 13:19) for years. Some refuse to go along with the world’s diet and center their lives around the Mass, devoting themselves to partaking of the Bread of Life (Jn 6:35). Still others are deciding today whether or not to eat the fruit of sinful worldly pleasure.

Decide today to eat as Mary leads. Allow Mary to fully reverse Eve’s curse in your life. Receive the Holy Eucharist.

Prayer: Immaculate Mary, I accept your advice to do whatever Jesus tells me (Jn 2:5). "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."

Promise: "God chose us in Him before the world began, to be holy and blameless in His sight, to be full of love." —Eph 1:4

Praise: Praise Jesus, the Son of God and the Son of Mary. Alleluia!

READY FOR CLIMATE PROBLEMS?
"When the rainy season set in, the torrents came and the winds blew and buffeted his house." —Matthew 7:25

A flood came in the time of Noah. “In the days before the flood people were eating and drinking, marrying and being married, right up to the day Noah entered the ark. They were totally unconcerned until the flood came and destroyed them” (Mt 24:38-39). Only Noah was ready, for he had been listening to the Lord (Gn 7:1-5).

Jesus speaks of the “torrents” to come in the lives of each one of us (Mt 7:25, 27). These could be destroying floods (Gn 7:11ff), but they don’t have to be. Our very lives depend upon listening to the Lord and heeding His voice (Mt 7:21). If today we hear His voice, we must not harden or turn away our hearts (Ps 95:7-8). To survive these torrents, we must listen to Jesus’ words and change our lives to build them upon the rock-solid foundation of the Word of God, and on the Church Jesus founded on the rock of St. Peter (Mt 16:18).

People were not ready at the first coming of Christ (see Is 50:2). Scripture repeatedly warns us to be ready for His Second Coming (see e.g. Mt 24:42, 48-50). When should we be ready? “Now is the acceptable time!” (2 Cor 6:2) “Delay not your conversion to the Lord” (Sir 5:8). Listen daily to the Word of God.

Prayer: Father, may I take Your warnings in Scripture far more seriously than any other warnings.

Promise: "A nation of firm purpose You keep in peace; in peace, for its trust in You." —Is 26:3

Praise: St. Ambrose, referring to Scripture, wrote: "He who is full, refreshes others." Full of the Spirit himself, St. Ambrose refreshed St. Augustine greatly as Augustine converted from his sinful lifestyle to become a Doctor of the Catholic Church.

THANKSGIVING EVERY DAY
"All ate until they were full." —Matthew 15:37

The Holy Eucharist appears basic and simple. It’s a food for those who are traveling light in order to escape slavery (Ex 12:11). The Eucharist is a small wafer of bread, not much larger than a potato chip. Yet it is rich and “juicy” (see Is 25:6ff). It “satisfies,” invigorates, revitalizes, fills, and enriches (see Mt 15:37). It is the food served at the heavenly wedding feast of the Lamb of God (Rv 19:9). It multiplies riches and graces.

In the USA, people gathered recently for rich Thanksgiving feasts. Yet the Eucharist, a word which literally means “thanksgiving,” is a far richer feast. It occurs every single day in the Holy Mass, and is far more abundant. The Eucharist is “life to the full” (see Jn 10:10).

Try to imagine eating a sumptuous Thanksgiving feast every single day! And yet the Eucharist is more than that. It is “the Source and Summit of the Christian life,” “the Body and Blood, together with the Soul and Divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1324, 1374). Each day, we can gather at the table of God Almighty to receive this Bread from Heaven, the Bread of Life (Jn 6:31, 35). Therefore, rearrange your life so as to be able to receive the Eucharist as often as possible, even daily.

Prayer: Father, thank You forever for inviting me to share in Your family's daily meal, the Holy Eucharist. May I desire to receive the Bread of Life as deeply as You desire to share it (Lk 22:15).

Promise: "The Lord of hosts will provide for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines, juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines." —Is 25:6

Praise: St. Nicholas gave gifts that freed others from being trapped in sinful lifestyles and brought them closer to Christ.
