UNFINISHED BUSINESS?

"They stoned Paul and dragged him out of the town, leaving him there for dead. His disciples quickly formed a circle about him, and before long he got up and went back into the town." -Acts 14:19-20

On the first Christian missionary journey, Paul and Barnabas were thrown out of Antioch (in Pisidia), Iconium, and Lystra. As soon as possible, they went back into these three places to finish the job of starting these Christian churches (Acts 14:21). "They gave their disciples reassurances, and encouraged them to persevere in the faith with this instruction: 'We must undergo many trials if we are to enter into the reign of God.' In each church, they installed presbyters and, with prayer and fasting, commended them to the Lord" (Acts 14:22-23).
Is your parish church, Christian community, and family frequently encouraged to suffer redemptively? Are you praying and fasting as a community for your leaders and for new leaders in the Church throughout the world? If we shared our faith enough to merit persecution and suffering, the Church wouldn't be divided, weakened, and watered down. If, in our sufferings, we also prayed and fasted for the Church's leaders, we wouldn't be having a vocations crisis but rather an explosion of leadership and new life in the Church.
In this Year of Faith, evangelize, suffer, pray, fast, and see the Church as the Lord intended it to be.

Prayer: Father, teach me to pray, fast, and suffer.

Promise: " 'Peace' is My farewell to you, My peace is My gift to you; I do not give it to you as the world gives peace. Do not be distressed or fearful." -Jn 14:27

Praise: Pope St. Pius V accepted his vocational call to priesthood at age fourteen and became one of the most important popes of the Counter-Reformation.

LAME - One Bread, One Body, 4/29/2013

LAME

"There was a man who was lame from birth; he used to sit crippled, never having walked in his life." -Acts 14:8

From the multitude of signs and wonders worked by the Holy Spirit in the early Church, the healing of the man lame from birth was selected as the first miracle recounted after the first Christian Pentecost (see Acts 3:6ff). Of the miracles done by the Spirit through Philip in a Samaritan town, the Bible emphasizes: "Many others were paralytics or cripples, and these were cured" (Acts 8:7). Not only did Peter, John, and Philip heal the lame, but also Paul commanded a man lame from birth: " 'Stand up! On your feet!' The man jumped up and began to walk around" (Acts 14:10). It seems that healing the lame was part of the credentials for Christian leaders (see 2 Cor 12:12).
The fact that healing the lame receives such emphasis in Acts of the Apostles may be an indication that this healing is not only an individual event, but a miracle representing initiation into the whole Christian life. Because of our fallen nature, we all are spiritually lame from the time of our conception and birth. We must receive a new nature to be freed from this spiritual lameness so we can walk as disciples in the footsteps of our Master, Jesus (see 1 Pt 2:21). Authentic Christian leaders will be used by the Lord to free us to "walk in light, as [Jesus] is in the light" (1 Jn 1:7).
Are you walking with Jesus or are you lame? Have you raised up others to walk with Jesus? Are you an authentic disciple of Jesus, making disciples for Jesus?

Prayer: Father, show me where I am lame. By Your grace, may I jump up and begin to walk around. May I lead others to do the same.

Promise: "Anyone who loves Me will be true to My word, and My Father will love him; We will come to him and make Our dwelling place with him." -Jn 14:23

Praise: By the age of twenty-seven, St. Catherine had converted thousands by her words and her actions.

PM eNewsletter Fifth Sunday of Easter

April 28th Fifth Sunday of Easter

Jesus, our lives are so busy, most of us have no time to do what we really ought to be doing,
and that is giving You praise and prayer.

Christ, give us the grace to come to see You in the Eucharist, Your Body and Blood, and let
us just stop all of our activity, and just adore You.

Lord, let us just sit with You, and let You help us to put our lives in true order.

Jesus, You are the answer to all of our problems and Your way is the only way that leads to
peace and joy.

Please Lord, give us the grace to understand that.

Amen and Amen.

Thanks to You, Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday A LOVE-LY DAY
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=4/28/2013

"As My love has been for you, so must your love be for each other." -John 13:34

Judas had just left the upper room to betray Jesus (Jn 13:31). Jesus knew He would be dead in
a matter of hours. He said to His apostles: "My children, I am not to be with you much
longer" (Jn 13:33). Then Jesus gave us the new commandment, to love one another as He had
loved us (Jn 13:34). Jesus repeated this commandment two more times and said we would be
recognized as His disciples because of this unique love (Jn 13:34-35). Within a few hours
after saying this, Jesus died on the cross because of His love for us.

Jesus has clearly commanded us to crucified, sacrificial, unconditional love. He calls us to
love the Judases in our lives. He calls us to lay down our lives (1 Jn 3:16) in love, even
for our enemies. This new commandment of love is the essence of salvation, the meaning of
life, and the way to the Father.

Jesus suffered for thirty-three years of life, three years of public ministry, and over three
hours of agony, crucifixion and death because of His love for us. Let us live the new
commandment and love one another as Jesus has loved us.

Prayer: Jesus, may I repent and accept Your heart of love for the person I least love.

Promise: "The One Who sat on the throne said to me, 'See, I make all things new!' " -Rv 21:5

Praise: Alleluia! Jesus, You have conquered sin and death. You are the Lamb of God Who takes
away all our sins (Jn 1:29). Thank You, Jesus!

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/BST/bst2013-03.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS

"TRUE PEACE"

Once we accept Jesus Christ, God and man, we have the joyful experience of an immense
gift: the sharing of God's own life, the life of grace, the pledge of a fully blessed
existence. Jesus Christ ... grants us true peace, which is born of the trusting
encounter of man with God.

PEACE IS...

Peace concerns the human person as a whole, and it involves complete commitment. It is
peace with God through a life lived according to His will. It is interior peace with
oneself, and external peace with our neighbors and all creation... As Bl. John XXII
wrote..., it entails the building up of a coexistence based on truth, freedom, love and
justice.

"AUTHENTIC PEACEMAKERS"

To become authentic peacemakers, it is fundamental to keep in mind our transcendent
dimension and to enter into constant dialogue with God, ... whereby we implore the
redemption achieved for us by His only-begotten Son.

WILL YOU RECEIVE THE SPIRIT? - One Bread, One Body, 4/27/2013

WILL YOU RECEIVE THE SPIRIT?

"The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit." -Acts 13:52, our transl.

Jesus promised that we who believe in Him can do even greater things than He did (Jn 14:12). We have such power because whatever we ask in Jesus' name will be given us (Jn 14:14). We can pray in Jesus' name, that is, we can know and want His will because of the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit (Jn 14:16-17). The Holy Spirit will convict us of worldly ways (Jn 16:8), give us the mind of Christ (see 1 Cor 2:16), and help us to pray in our weakness (Rm 8:26). Then we will do greater works than Jesus did. We will change the world for Jesus not by our might or power but by the Holy Spirit (Zec 4:6).
Three weeks from tomorrow will be Pentecost. We have been preparing for this for over seventy days. The Lord wants to give us the greatest Pentecost of our lives and to renew the face of the earth (Ps 104:30). Will we be receptive to such a radical, life-changing outpouring of the Holy Spirit? Will we let the Lord make us much more receptive in the next three weeks? Will we receive power from on high (Lk 24:49) to pray in Jesus' name and to do greater works than Jesus did?

Prayer: Father, let it be done to me according to Your word (Lk 1:38).

Promise: "The Gentiles were delighted when they heard this and responded to the word of the Lord with praise. All who were destined for life everlasting believed in it. Thus the word of the Lord was carried throughout that area." -Acts 13:48-49

Praise: Randall, a young teenager, prepared to commit suicide, but the gun was mysteriously knocked out of his hand several times. A few weeks later, he was invited to a Life in the Spirit seminar. He received the Holy Spirit so powerfully that he didn't lower his upraised arms for a half-hour.

(To help receive the Holy Spirit, order our booklet, "Praying For a New Pentecost".)

PLACEMENT SERVICES - One Bread, One Body, 4/26/2013

PLACEMENT SERVICES

"In My Father's house there are many dwelling places; otherwise, how could I have told you that I was going to prepare a place for you?" -John 14:2-3

The Lord created human beings as creatures of place. We want a place in life, a place to live, job placement, even a place at table. We don't want to feel out-of-place. We also want a place in church. Some people even come early to church to get a certain place. It's usually in the back, and one they've had for years.
Deep down we feel a need for a place not just in the church building but in the Church, the body of Christ. Jesus promised He would go and prepare this place for us (Jn 14:2). "When He ascended on high, He took a host of captives and gave gifts to men" (Eph 4:8). By using these gifts of the Spirit, we can take our place in the body of Christ and in His plan of salvation. By repenting, we are able to return to our proper place after losing that place through sin.
After we have taken our place in this life Jesus will come back and take us with Him so that where He is we also may be (Jn 14:3). He will give us our place in heaven. Then we will be "in place" forever.

Prayer: Father, I repent of any words and thoughts which are out of place (see Eph 5:4) .

Promise: "Yet God raised Him from the dead, and for many days thereafter Jesus appeared to those who had come up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem. These are His witnesses now before the people." -Acts 13:30-31

Praise: Harry quit a high-paying job because God called him elsewhere.

Mark (John Mark) quit the first missionary journey in the history of the Christian people (Acts 13:13). In retrospect, this journey turned out to be one of the greatest events in history, and Mark made the horrendous mistake of quitting.
However, Mark became the writer of the second Gospel, a canonized saint, and one of the greatest people in history. Mark fell, but he got up. Better yet, he stayed up. It's not good enough to get up after we fall. We must ask for God's grace to correct the reason for the fall, so we don't fall again.
Mark quit the first missionary journey after seeing Paul call for God to strike Elymas blind (Acts 13:11). Mark may have been shaken by the intensity of the spiritual warfare that occurred. However, Mark must have corrected his problem, since he later wrote of expelling demons, handling serpents, and drinking poisons without harm (Mk 16:17-18).
Mark may have quit the first missionary journey because God raised up Paul to lead this journey, although Mark's cousin, Barnabas, was originally the leader (cf Acts 13:1, 2, 7 and 13:13). Mark may have needed to learn to submit to his elders and to clothe himself with humility (1 Pt 5:5). He learned to "bow humbly under God's mighty hand, so that in due time" (1 Pt 5:6) God lifted Mark up to write one of the Gospels.
If you've fallen, get up and stay up by correcting the reason why you fell.

Prayer: Father, correct me.

Promise: "Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation. The man who believes in it and accepts baptism will be saved; the man who refuses to believe in it will be condemned." -Mk 16:15-16

Praise: In his gospel, St. Mark told the good news that we've been given a second chance through the mercy of Jesus.

THE SPREADING, INCREASING, AND JUDGING WORD

"Whoever rejects Me and does not accept My words already has His judge, namely, the word I have spoken." -John 12:48

We are saved by grace through faith in Christ (Eph 2:8). "Faith comes through hearing, and hearing comes by the word of God" (Rm 10:17, our transl.). Therefore, St. Jerome rightly said: "Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ" (Catechism, 133). We will be judged based on our faith in Christ which is a result of our relationship with Christ, which is usually based on hearing God's Word. Thus, we are judged by God's Word (Jn 12:48).
Therefore, like the early Church, we should be very concerned that "the word of the Lord" continue "to spread and increase" (Acts 12:24; see also Acts 6:7; 19:20). Is God's Word spreading in your family, community, parishes, city, and country? What are you doing to sow the seed of God's Word? (see Mk 4:14) Are you concerned that this book, One Bread, One Body, reach as many people as possible as deeply as possible? Are you praying and working for this? In this Easter season, is the Word of God continuing to spread and increase in your life? Are you trying to meditate on God's Word day and night? (see Ps 1:2) Has this Easter time been your best walk with Jesus as He interprets for you "every passage of Scripture" which refers to Him? (see Lk 24:27) May "the word of the Lord" continue "to spread and increase" (Acts 12:24).

Prayer: Father, may Your Word burn in my heart (Lk 24:32).

Promise: "After they had fasted and prayed, they imposed hands on them and sent them off." -Acts 13:3

Praise: St. Fidelis gave the needy more than food or medicine; he gave them Jesus. Eventually, he gave Jesus his life by suffering a martyr's death at the hands of enraged peasants he tried to reconcile to the Church of Rome.

"AIN'T IT GRAND TO BE A CHRISTIAN?"

"It was in Antioch that the disciples were called Christians for the first time." -Acts 11:26

The first time "Christian" was used to describe Jesus' followers, it meant all of the following:
* those who believed in "the good news of the Lord Jesus" (Acts 11:20-21),
* those "converted to the Lord" (Acts 11:21),
* those who had remained "firm in their commitment to the Lord" (Acts 11:23), and
* those instructed in the Scriptures possibly each day (see Acts 17:11) for a whole year (Acts 11:26).

What does the word "Christian" mean today? The word is used to refer to the baptized, the saved, churchgoers, people who pray, or those who have some Christian values. While all of these things are part of being a Christian, they aren't enough to make us Christians by the standards of Acts 11.
Are you a Christian? By whose standards? Do you want to be a Christian according to Acts 11? Start by renewing your baptismal promises. Repent and go to Confession. Give your whole life to the Lord. Ask for the Holy Spirit to fill you and give you a desire to meditate on the Word of God day and night (see Ps 1:2). Abide in God's Word every day for a year (see Jn 8:31). Be a Christian.

Prayer: Father, I want to live up to my name. Make me realize it is "grand to be a Christian."

Promise: "My Father is greater than all, in what He has given Me, and there is no snatching out of His hand. The Father and I are One." -Jn 10:29-30

Praise: St. Peter cured the paralytic Aeneas in the town of Lydda, and all of its inhabitants "were converted to the Lord" (Acts 9:35). Some 250 years later, St. George, a citizen of Lydda, bore additional fruit from Peter's healing by giving up his life to witness to his faith in Jesus.

GATER-AID - One Bread, One Body, 4/22/2013

GATER-AID

"My solemn word is this: I am the Sheepgate." -John 10:7

Jesus is the Founder, Head, and Gate of the Church. If a person does not enter the Church through Jesus but climbs in some other way, that person will tend to be "a thief and a marauder" (Jn 10:1). For example, if a person entered into leadership of the Church primarily through the gates of education, giftedness, or popularity, that person's leadership will probably hurt the Church. Leaders need to be chosen by Jesus, the Good Shepherd and the Gate. How many organists, liturgists, DREs, youth directors, pastoral associates, members of parish councils, committee heads, etc., have entered into their positions in the Church through gates other than Jesus?
We can apply this more personally by recognizing our families as "domestic Churches." Has every family activity, decision, TV program, and purchase entered your life through Jesus, the Gate? Does this explain how Dad's joy, Mom's peace, and the children's faith have been stolen?
Jesus will only be the Way, the Truth, and the Life (Jn 14:6) for us if He is the Gateway. When Jesus is the Gateway, He is the Truth Who sets us free from lying thieves (see Jn 8:32) and Who gives us life to the full (Jn 10:10).

Prayer: Father, I accept Your grace to make Jesus the only Gate into my life.

Promise: "God has granted life-giving repentance even to the Gentiles." -Acts 11:18

Praise: Teenage Juan persuaded his family to pray a daily rosary.

SECRETS TO KNOWING THE BIBLE - One Bread, One Body, 4/18/2013

SECRETS TO KNOWING THE BIBLE

"He said to him, 'Do you really grasp what you are reading?' 'How can I,' the man replied, 'unless someone explains it to me?' " -Acts 8:30-31

Some of you reading One Bread, One Body are much more intelligent that I am and know more about the Bible than I do. So why are you reading this? The Lord has arranged it that we need other people's help to understand much of the Bible. For example, the Ethiopian eunuch, the "official in charge of the entire treasury of Candace," queen of the Ethiopians, was probably much more intelligent than Philip (Acts 8:27). Yet he couldn't understand the part of the Bible he was reading without having Philip explain it to him (Acts 8:31).
Some of you reading this are not very intelligent and know little about the Bible. However, the Lord may have chosen you to enlighten those superior to you in intelligence and knowledge of the Bible. The Lord rejoices in the Holy Spirit that what He has "hidden from the learned and the clever" He has revealed to and through the merest children (Lk 10:21).
Therefore, to understand the Bible as well as possible we need to be humble, docile, and willing to depend on others. We also need to realize that the Lord has given us a light on the Scriptures that other people need to see. Therefore, in humility and docility, seek the light from others. Then "let your little light shine."

Prayer: Father, may my humility greatly exceed my intelligence (see Prv 3:5-6). Let Your word burn in my heart (Lk 24:32).

Promise: "No one can come to Me unless the Father Who sent Me draws him; I will raise him up on the last day." -Jn 6:44

Praise: Sister Rose gave a copy of One Bread, One Body to an elderly woman who had been reading Scripture daily. The woman was so delighted that within an hour she requested extra copies and, with the help of her walker, visited a friend to share the booklets and the Scriptures.

CROSS-EXAMINING THE WITNESS

"The members of the Church who had been dispersed went about preaching the word." -Acts 8:4

Jesus is risen, and we are His witnesses (see Acts 1:8; 2:32; 3:15; 4:33; 10:41; 13:31). In this beginning of the Easter season, are you obeying the risen Jesus and witnessing for Him?
If you are not witnessing, or not witnessing that much, you may be quenching the Holy Spirit (1 Thes 5:19) by letting yourself be:
* manipulated by the fear of being ridiculed (see Acts 2:12-13),
* intimidated by threats (see Acts 4:18),
* preoccupied with personal, family, or community problems (see Acts 6:1ff),
* traumatized by the death of someone you love (see Acts 8:2), or
* shaken by persecution (see Acts 8:1, 3).

The fact that Satan opposes our witnessing with wave after wave of opposition is an indication that witnessing for Jesus is powerful, life-changing, and world-changing.
The Lord has given us the power to overcome all the opposition of the evil one. He promises: "There is One greater in you than there is in the world" (1 Jn 4:4). God's grace is sufficient, for in our weakness His power reaches perfection (2 Cor 12:9). Pray to accept the grace to witness to someone for the risen Christ within twenty-four hours.

Prayer: Father, stir the Holy Spirit into flame in my life (see 2 Tm 1:6-7).

Promise: "No one who comes will I ever reject." -Jn 6:37

Praise: Several musically gifted youth serve Jesus by leading the worship ministry at a weekly charismatic prayer group. Now they minister on the prayer teams as well.

LOOK-ALIKES?

"Stephen meanwhile, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked to the sky above and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God's right hand." -Acts 7:55

Stephen was surrounded by a "stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears" (Acts 7:51). These people had always opposed the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51) and could not be expected to respond in a godly way to Stephen's challenging speech. Stephen was well aware of this, but he did not tone down or mince his words. Stephen came on strong, and "those who listened to his words were stung to the heart; they ground their teeth in anger at him" (Acts 7:54). "The onlookers were shouting aloud, holding their hands over their ears as they did so. Then they rushed at him as one man, dragged him out of the city, and began to stone him" (Acts 7:57-58). "With that he died" (Acts 7:60).
Stephen, the first martyr, was not naive. He had an exceptional wisdom (Acts 6:10). Stephen was not a victim of circumstances. He knew what he was getting into. He risked and gave his life to be like Jesus. Stephen was courageous. He knew that Jesus had died violently to give us salvation, and Stephen was willing to imitate Him. Stephen was obedient. Like any human being, Stephen didn't want to die a violent and painful death. Like Jesus, however, Stephen said to God the Father: "Not my will, but Yours be done" (Mt 26:39, our transl.). Stephen was loving. Stephen, like Jesus (Lk 23:34), even forgave His murderers (Acts 7:60).
Stephen was like Jesus. How about you? "If we have been united with Him through likeness to His death, so shall we be through a like resurrection" (Rm 6:5).

Prayer: "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit" (Acts 7:59).

Promise: "I Myself am the Bread of Life. No one who comes to Me shall ever be hungry, no one who believes in Me shall ever thirst." -Jn 6:35

Praise: Laura repented of lethargy and sloth and is now filled with a supernatural energy to serve God's people.

UNSTOPPABLE

"This man never stops..." -Acts 6:13

St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr:
* was "a man filled with grace and power" (Acts 6:8),
* was full of the Holy Spirit and faith (Acts 6:5),
* was so full of wisdom that the international all-star team of debaters "proved no match for the wisdom and spirit with which he spoke" (Acts 6:8-10),
* lived so full a life that, even though he was commissioned to handle the time-consuming job of distributing food, he still found plenty of time to witness about Jesus,
* "worked great wonders and signs among the people" (Acts 6:8),
* evangelized so powerfully that the Jews rated him as a greater enemy than the twelve apostles, choosing him as the first Christian to be killed, and
* focused so intently and lovingly on Jesus that even while hostile enemies sought his life, he radiated heavenly joy (Acts 6:15).

The false witnesses who testified against Stephen managed to speak one true statement: "This man never stops" (Acts 6:13). Like Stephen, may we be so full of the Holy Spirit that we never stop serving, loving, praising, and sharing the risen Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may I imitate Jesus with the attentiveness, faith, and devotion of St. Stephen.

Promise: "You should not be working for perishable food but for food that remains unto life eternal, food which the Son of Man will give you." -Jn 6:27

Praise: Marty, a non-Catholic, discerned that Jesus was calling him to be a Catholic priest. He joined the Church that he once criticized and is now studying for the priesthood.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE HUNDRED-YARD DASH
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=4/14/2013

"Actually they were not far from land - no more than a hundred yards." -John 21:8

When we sin, we distance ourselves from the Lord. Like Jonah, we try to get as far away from
God as we can (see Jon 1:3). Like Jonah, however, we run into God no matter where we go. The
psalmist questioned: "Where can I go from Your Spirit? From Your presence where can I flee?
If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I sink to the nether world, You are present
there" (Ps 139:7-8). Nevertheless, if we insist on it, the Lord will let us finally escape
from Him. This place of escape is called hell or eternal damnation where we can separate
ourselves from God forever.

When we run away from God, the Lord will try to flush us out of our hiding place of sin
(see Lk 15:4). As He did with Adam and Eve, the Lord will call to us: "Where are you?"(Gn 3:9)
If we turn back to Him, He will meet us much more than halfway. Our heavenly Father will run
out to meet us, throw His arms around our necks, and kiss us (Lk 15:20).

However, the Lord will not force Himself on us. We must repent. When Peter distanced himself
from Jesus by going back into the fishing business and rejecting Jesus' call to be a fisher
of men, Jesus reached out to Peter and got within a hundred yards of him (Jn 21:8). However,
Peter had to jump in the lake and swim a hundred yards (Jn 21:7). In His love for us, Jesus
will travel all time and space to be close to us. Through repentance, we must cover a few
yards to get to Jesus.

In this Easter season, how close are you to Jesus? If you've distanced yourself from Him,
repent and jump in the lake.

Prayer: Father, if I sin, may I make a hundred-yard dash back to You.

Promise: "We testify to this. So too does the Holy Spirit, Whom God has given to those that
obey Him." -Acts 5:32

Praise: "Worthy is the Lamb That was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength,
honor and glory and praise!" (Rv 5:12)

Risen Life

"Why do you search for the Living One among the dead? He is not here; He has been raised up."
-Luke 24:5-6

Alleluia! Jesus is risen! He's alive! "O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your
sting?" (1 Cor 15:55) We as Christians have personally had the most overwhelming experience
imaginable. The One Who loves us so much, Who would do anything for us, was brutally murdered
by crucifixion. To have a loved one die is traumatic enough without it being a violent murder.
Amazingly, this Victim came out of the grave on the third day. We who love Him are
transformed from a shattered life to victory, from weeping to joy, and from mourning to
dancing (Ps 30:6, 12). Imagine a dead parent, spouse, or friend walking in the room right now.
This would be a shadow of what happens when we meet the risen Christ.

We may think we cannot meet the risen Jesus because ...........................

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS

SHAPED BY JESUS

Encountering Jesus Christ shapes peacemakers, committing them to fellowship and to
overcoming injustice.

A PEACEMAKER ...

The peacemaker, according to Jesus' beatitude, is the one who seeks the good of the other,
the fullness of good in body and soul, today and tomorrow.

GOD IS ON YOUR SIDE

In the eyes of the world, those who trust in God and His promises often appear naive or
far from reality. Yet Jesus tells them that not only in the next life, but already in this
life, they will discover that they are the children of God , and that God has always been
and ever will be, completely on their side. They will understand that they are not alone,
because He is on the side of those committed to truth, justice and love

THE HUNDRED-YARD DASH

"Actually they were not far from land - no more than a hundred yards." -John 21:8

When we sin, we distance ourselves from the Lord. Like Jonah, we try to get as far away from God as we can (see Jon 1:3). Like Jonah, however, we run into God no matter where we go. The psalmist questioned: "Where can I go from Your Spirit? From Your presence where can I flee? If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I sink to the nether world, You are present there" (Ps 139:7-8). Nevertheless, if we insist on it, the Lord will let us finally escape from Him. This place of escape is called hell or eternal damnation where we can separate ourselves from God forever.
When we run away from God, the Lord will try to flush us out of our hiding place of sin (see Lk 15:4). As He did with Adam and Eve, the Lord will call to us: "Where are you?" (Gn 3:9) If we turn back to Him, He will meet us much more than halfway. Our heavenly Father will run out to meet us, throw His arms around our necks, and kiss us (Lk 15:20).
However, the Lord will not force Himself on us. We must repent. When Peter distanced himself from Jesus by going back into the fishing business and rejecting Jesus' call to be a fisher of men, Jesus reached out to Peter and got within a hundred yards of him (Jn 21:8). However, Peter had to jump in the lake and swim a hundred yards (Jn 21:7). In His love for us, Jesus will travel all time and space to be close to us. Through repentance, we must cover a few yards to get to Jesus.
In this Easter season, how close are you to Jesus? If you've distanced yourself from Him, repent and jump in the lake.

Prayer: Father, if I sin, may I make a hundred-yard dash back to You.

Promise: "We testify to this. So too does the Holy Spirit, Whom God has given to those that obey Him." -Acts 5:32

NON-STOP

"The word of God continued to spread." -Acts 6:7

Peter and John were arrested, jailed, threatened, and told to shut up about God's word (Acts 4:3ff). They refused to stop (Acts 4:19-20). The apostles were then arrested, jailed, threatened, told again to shut up about God's word, and whipped (Acts 5:17ff). However, "day after day, both in the temple and at home, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news of Jesus the Messiah" (Acts 5:42).
No outside pressure stopped the early Church from proclaiming God's word. So the devil tried an inside job. Through an administrative oversight and/or a demonic strategy, the widows of the Greek-speaking Christians were "neglected in the daily distribution of food" (Acts 6:1). The apostles were tempted to neglect the word of God and to make sure the widows of the Greek-speaking Christians would no longer be neglected. They probably were tempted to think this would only be temporary, but a temporary neglect of our God-given callings often goes on indefinitely. However, the apostles did not fall into the trap. They continued to concentrate on the ministry of the word (Acts 6:4), while appointing deacons to better administer the food.
Are you neglecting your God-given responsibilities because of sin, selfishness, or fear? Are you neglecting them because of misguided attempts to help or rescue others? Is a temporary neglect becoming permanent? Concentrate on your calling.

Prayer: Risen Jesus, send the Holy Spirit to keep me focused and to help me overcome distractions.

Promise: "He told them, 'It is I; do not be afraid.' They wanted to take Him into the boat, but suddenly it came aground on the shore they had been approaching." -Jn 6:20-21

Praise: Pope St. Martin I accepted the faith, the papacy, torture, imprisonment, and martyrdom.

JESUS AND THE CHURCH - One Bread, One Body, 4/12/2013

Friday, April 12, 2013

JESUS AND THE CHURCH

"If, on the other hand, it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy them without fighting God Himself." -Acts 5:39

The culmination of the Easter season is Pentecost. Pentecost involves both the coming of the Spirit and the birthday of the Church. Those who are committed to the risen Christ and filled with the Spirit love the Church (see Eph 5:25). The Spirit and the Bride (the Church) are of one accord (Rv 22:17).
Jesus loved the Church so much that He died for her (Eph 5:25). The Church is Jesus' body (e.g. 1 Cor 12:12). If one member of the Church suffers, Jesus suffers (1 Cor 12:26). If we hear the Church, we hear Jesus (Lk 10:16). If we reject the Church, we reject Jesus (Lk 10:16). If we fight the Church, we are fighting Jesus, Who is God (Acts 5:39). If we persecute the Church, Jesus says: "Why do you persecute Me?" (Acts 9:4) Jesus identifies with the Church this way because He loves her so much.
Jesus so identifies with the Church that, if you mess with the Church, you mess with Jesus; likewise, if you love the Church, you love Jesus. Love the Church as Jesus does (Eph 5:25), and you are loving Jesus.

Prayer: Father, may I love the Church despite her stains and wrinkles (see Eph 5:27).

Promise: "Jesus then took the loaves of bread, gave thanks, and passed them around to those reclining there; He did the same with the dried fish, as much as they wanted." -Jn 6:11

Praise: Jim, a security guard at a bank, was ordered by his boss to stop bringing his Bible to work. Jim respectfully refused and continued to read his Bible on his lunch break. A few months later, Jim's boss was fired.

OIL RATIONING? - One Bread, One Body, 4/11/2013

Thursday, April 11, 2013, St. Stanislaus

Acts 5:27-33, Psalm 34:2, 9, 17-20, John 3:31-36
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/041113.cfm

OIL RATIONING?

"The Holy Spirit, Whom God has given to those who obey Him..." -Acts 5:32 "He does not ration His gift of the Spirit." -John 3:34

The above two statements seem somewhat contradictory. Scripture says God gives the Spirit to those who obey Him (Acts 5:32). The clear implication of Peter as he spoke these words to the disobedient Sanhedrin is that the Lord will not give the Holy Spirit to those who won't obey Him. Then the second Scripture quotation above says that God doesn't ration the Holy Spirit (Jn 3:34), but pours out the Spirit in unlimited measure.
In truth, God has lavished the Spirit "on all mankind" (Acts 2:17). Nevertheless, when we disobey God, we turn our backs on Him and His will. In our disobedience, we put a lid over the earthen vessel of our life (see 2 Cor 4:7) and refuse to receive His unrationed flow of the Spirit. We stifle the Spirit (1 Thes 5:19).
Sometimes our disobedience may not stem from outright rebellion, but simply weakness. We don't have a spiritual lid on our life; we receive the Holy Spirit, but we can't retain the Spirit. Our sins and weaknesses cause cracks in the vessels of our lives. We leak like broken cisterns (see Jer 2:13).
On the first Easter, Jesus breathed on His apostles and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit" (Jn 20:22). The Easter season is a time of pouring out the Spirit, so ask the Lord for the grace to repent of any disobedience and anything that might stifle or sadden the Spirit (1 Thes 5:19; Eph 4:30) in your life. Make an Easter Confession to repair the cracks in your life, and ask the Father to pour out His love in your heart through the Holy Spirit (Rm 5:5).

Prayer: Jesus, may my cracks be "sealed" by the Spirit (2 Cor 1:22) so I may stay filled with the Spirit (Acts 2:4).

Promise: "Whoever believes in the Son has life eternal." -Jn 3:36

Praise: St. Stanislaus was such an anointed pastor that his own bishop wanted to step down and appoint Stanislaus as bishop in his place, an offer which Stanislaus refused.

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)
