ARE YOU SAVED?
"If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." —Romans 10:9 "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." —Romans 10:13

Are you saved? The Biblical answer for a Christian to that question is: “I have been saved by Christ’s death and Resurrection.” “When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us” (Ti 3:4-5). “He saved us; not because of any righteous deeds we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the baptism of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit” (Ti 3:5). Moreover, we not only have been saved but are being saved by the Gospel at this very moment, if we hold fast to it (1 Cor 15:2). Finally, we will be saved, if we persevere in living our Baptisms (see Rm 10:9, 13; cf Mt 24:13).

If we have been, are being, and will be saved, we will be motivated by love (see 2 Cor 5:14) to lead others to salvation in Jesus. However, we may be bewildered about sharing our faith. St. Andrew may be the perfect person to help us. For example, when some Greeks came to St. Philip and asked to see Jesus, Philip, for some reason, did not go to Jesus but to Andrew (Jn 12:21-22). Then Philip, with Andrew, “came to inform Jesus” (Jn 12:22).

Accept Jesus as Savior, Lord, and God. Ask St. Andrew to help you lead others to salvation in Jesus. Then go, be fishers of men (Mt 4:19), and make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19).

Prayer: Father, beginning this Advent, make my voice sound "over the whole earth" and my "words to the limits of the world" (Rm 10:18). St. Andrew, pray for us.

Promise: "Scripture says, 'How beautiful are the feet of those who announce good news!' " —Rm 10:15

Praise: St. Andrew is said to have preached Jesus even as he was being crucified on an X-shaped cross.

GOD'S GRAFFITI
"The fingers of a human hand appeared, writing on the plaster of the wall in the king's palace." —Daniel 5:5

Today’s first reading shows a human hand writing God’s message upon a wall, as it were, writing “graffiti” to the King (see Dn 5:5). The King could not stop the hand from writing (see 2 Tm 2:9).

Last Thursday was the holiday of Thanksgiving in the USA. Many of you gathered with family members for a festive dinner. Perhaps there were people present who did not believe in God and were vocal in opposing any thanks being offered to God at all.

Jesus says in today’s Gospel: “I bid you resolve not to worry about your defense beforehand, for I will give you words and a wisdom which none of your adversaries can take exception to or contradict” (Lk 21:14-15). You may be in a situation where you are not even allowed to speak. In that case, radiate Christ’s love through Your lifestyle of faith (Mt 5:16).

Be encouraged that even though you may feel “silenced” by some loved ones on the topic of God, the Lord Himself is testifying to them. He is able to write graffiti messages to them that they cannot ignore. Perhaps he may speak through your faithful lifestyle or through the grandeur of His creation (Rm 1:19-20).

Jesus is the Word of God (Jn 1:14). He is writing His messages even to those who have thus far been ignoring Him. His messages are “living and effective,” and reach even the most closed hearts (Heb 4:12-13).

Prayer: Father, let Your love flow through me to those who do not believe in You.

Promise: "By patient endurance you will save your lives." —Lk 21:19

Praise: After three years of friendship with a neighbor who was away from the Lord, Margaret led her back to Christ.

THE CERTAINTY OF THE END AND HIS COMING
"The God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall...break in pieces all these kingdoms and put an end to them, and it shall stand forever." —Daniel 2:44

The vision Daniel interpreted has been the pattern of history (Dn 2:31ff). Great kingdom after great kingdom has been destroyed. Even the Temple and the city of God, Jerusalem, were destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D. (Lk 21:6). Jesus prophesied that the fall of Jerusalem would be a prefigurement of the end of the world. “The present heavens and earth are reserved by God’s word for fire; they are kept for the day of judgment, the day when godless men will be destroyed” (2 Pt 3:7). “What we await are new heavens and a new earth where, according to His promise, the justice of God will reside” (2 Pt 3:13).

Despite the historical proof of the accuracy of Jesus’ prophecy of Jerusalem’s destruction, many people, even Christians, doubt that Jerusalem’s destruction prefigures the end of the world. However, most of the major critics of Christ’s prophecy of the world’s end have already been thrown on the garbage heap of history. For example, Karl Marx portrayed Christian eschatology as an escape from taking responsibility for justice in this world. He called Christianity “the opium of the people.” Although millions still believe Marx’s critique of Christianity, the breakdown of Marxist Communism in the former Soviet Union proved its weakness. The critics of Christianity and of its eschatology are passing away, but God’s Word will last forever (Lk 21:33).

Let the world end and Jesus return.

Prayer: Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus! (Rv 22:20)

Promise: "The great God has revealed to the king what shall be in the future." —Dn 2:45

Praise: Praise You, Almighty Father. We glorify You and believe we "will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with great power and glory" (Lk 21:27).

THE TRUST TEST
"The king allotted them a daily portion of food and wine from the royal table." —Daniel 1:5

“Name something you have that you have not received” (1 Cor 4:7). Everything we have comes from Christ the King, Whose feast we celebrated yesterday. King Jesus gives us daily food and wine from the royal table, that is, the Eucharist on the altar at Holy Mass.

God gave manna to the Israelites in the wilderness day by day (Ex 16:4). In the New Covenant, Christ the King gives us daily bread and wine in the Mass — the Body and Blood of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

Daniel and his companions risked their lives to take a test of eating only vegetables for ten days, so as to live by their faith in God’s holy law (Dn 1:12). Here’s a test: for the next ten days, go to daily Mass, if at all possible. Make it purposeful and inconvenient — even a suffering, as it was for Daniel and companions. Eat the King’s food from the royal table for ten days, that is, the Holy Eucharist (Dn 1:14). How will you look after ten days of eating “bread that comes down from heaven”? (Jn 6:50) “After ten days [Daniel and his companions] looked healthier and better fed than” their fellow students (Dn 1:15).

If daily Mass is not possible, do a spiritual communion for ten days. Take a life-threatening, life-changing risk for the Lord, as did Daniel and the widow of today’s Gospel reading (see Dn 1:12; Lk 21:4). Put yourself on the line for the King. He will always provide from heaven for His servants (Mt 6:33). Take the trust test.

Prayer: King Jesus, I love nothing more than to be Your subject. I will trust in You at all times (Ps 62:9).

Promise: "I assure you, this poor widow has put in more than all the rest." —Lk 21:3

Praise: "Blessed are You on the throne of Your kingdom, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever" (Dn 3:54).

AT THE KING'S FEET
"Christ must reign until God has put all enemies under His feet." —1 Corinthians 15:25

The Old Testament describes God’s plan as making His enemies His footstool (Ps 110:1). Reigning kings in Old Testament days placed their feet on the prone bodies of their enemies as a sign of bringing them to submission. God’s vanquished enemies would likewise be subject to His will (1 Cor 15:27-28).

In the New Testament, God’s enemies are described as humbled beneath Jesus’ feet (Mt 22:44). Jesus, God Himself, died on His cross for all His enemies (Rm 5:8). He reigns on His cross as crucified King (Jn 19:19).

We all were enemies of Christ the King as we lived in sin (Rm 5:10). Then we came to know Jesus as Savior, Lord, God, and King, and we repented. We came to the foot of His cross and were shocked speechless when we realized how much Jesus, King of the Universe, suffered out of love for us (Is 52:15). We humbled ourselves at His crucified feet (Mt 22:44), and we fell at His feet to worship, thank, and praise Him (Lk 17:16).

King Jesus washed our feet; now we “must wash each other’s feet” (Jn 13:14). We wash King Jesus’ feet by feeding the hungry, welcoming strangers, visiting prisoners, and comforting the ill, etc. (Mt 25:35ff).

Have you subjected everything to King Jesus? Give Him your all. Place “all things under His feet” (1 Cor 15:27).

Prayer: Jesus, "King of kings" (Rv 19:16), I rejoice to be Your subject. To You "be honor and everlasting rule!" (1 Tm 6:16)

Promise: "Thus says the Lord God: I Myself will look after and tend My sheep." —Ez 34:11

Praise: Lord Jesus, risen King of the Universe, how beautiful are Your feet, which bring Good News to the world (Is 52:7).

PREPARE FOR DEATH BY LIVING FOR JESUS
"They become like angels and are no longer liable to death." —Luke 20:36

The readings for today’s Mass display some people who had misunderstandings about death. King Antiochus was dying in confusion and so did not prepare well for his death (1 Mc 6:8-13). The Sadducees tried to “use” death in an absurd example to politicize their beliefs (see Lk 20:27-33). These misunderstandings about death continue in the present day. The abortion industry plies its trade in death, and makes its profits from death. For them, death means money. Halloween, which has evolved into a holiday that glorifies death, must be pleasing to Satan, “the prince of death” (Heb 2:14). The secular culture often twists death to appear attractive. No wonder suicide is so prevalent; it is presented as a solution to our problems.

If we place our hopes in this world alone, we “are the most pitiable of” people (1 Cor 15:19). If we insist on living without Jesus, we face not being prepared for our death.

Tomorrow we celebrate the feast of Christ the King, Lord of the Universe. Jesus is “the Resurrection and the Life” (Jn 11:25), “the Way, and the Truth, and the Life” (Jn 14:6). He is the “Author of Life” (Acts 3:15). Living in Jesus, we focus on life “to the full” (Jn 10:10), not on death.

Therefore, “choose life” (Dt 30:19). “In whatever you do, remember your last days, and you will never sin” (Sir 7:36). Repent! Now is the time! (2 Cor 6:2) Prepare for death by living for Jesus.

Prayer: "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen."

Promise: "The needy shall not always be forgotten, nor shall the hope of the afflicted forever perish." —Ps 9:19

Praise: St. Catherine is said to have had a vision of Baby Jesus before her Baptism. God used her wisdom to convert fifty pagan philosophers.

PURITY
Jesus "entered the temple and began ejecting the traders." —Luke 19:45

Jesus has made it clear that He wants His temple purified (see 1 Mc 4:36). Jesus commands us to be pure, even “as He is pure” (1 Jn 3:3). Jesus is purifying His Church “in the bath of water by the power of the word, to present to Himself a glorious church, holy and immaculate, without stain or wrinkle or anything of that sort” (Eph 5:26-27). “By obedience to the truth,” we can purify ourselves “for a genuine love” of our brothers and sisters (1 Pt 1:22). The Lord has promised us “a fountain to purify from sin and uncleanness” (Zec 13:1).

This fountain of purification is our Baptism into Jesus (Rm 6:3) in which we have stripped “off the carnal body completely” (Col 2:11). If we live our Baptism by being holy in every aspect of our conduct (1 Pt 1:15), we are pure. Even if we have defiled ourselves through sin after our Baptism, we can be purified by repentance, especially by accepting God’s mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Therefore, “since we have these promises, beloved, let us purify ourselves from every defilement of flesh and spirit, and in the fear of God strive to fulfill our consecration perfectly” (2 Cor 7:1).

Prayer: Father, may I want to be pure more than a person with cancer wants to be free of all cancerous cells.

Promise: "All the people prostrated themselves and adored and praised Heaven, who had given them success." —1 Mc 4:55

Praise: St. John-Theophane Venard, one of St. Andrew's companions martyred in Vietnam, had corresponded with St. Therese of Lisieux. John chose the "little way" by accepting martyrdom out of perfect love for Jesus.

WILL YOU EVER DENY HIM?
"The officers of the king in charge of enforcing the apostasy came to the city." —1 Maccabees 2:15

The Seleucid king tried to enforce an apostasy on the Jews. Roman emperors repeatedly tried to enforce apostasies on the early Christians. This continues to happen as Chinese Communists oppress Christians, terrorists brutalize Christians in several other nations, and secular humanists express their intolerance of Christians in the Western world. These many attempts to enforce apostasies will culminate in the mass apostasy led by the Antichrist at the end of the world (2 Thes 2:3ff).

We will not deny Christ if we are like Mattathias. He refused to be manipulated “in the slightest degree” by threats and bribes (1 Mc 2:22). He courageously “answered in a loud voice” that he would not be influenced by popular opinion (1 Mc 2:19). Mattathias and his whole family were united in their resolve to keep the covenant with the Lord (1 Mc 2:20). Mattathias was zealous (1 Mc 2:24) and willing to leave behind all his possessions in order “to live according to righteousness” (1 Mc 2:28-29).

Are you “apostasy-proof”? Will you withstand the pressure, or will you fold? Are you like Mattathias? Would you leave your lifestyle behind to save your life in Christ?

Prayer: Father, I give up my life for Jesus (Lk 9:24).

Promise: "Offer to God praise as your sacrifice and fulfill your vows to the Most High; then call upon Me in time of distress; I will rescue you, and you shall glorify Me." —Ps 50:14-15

Praise: Pope St. Clement I wrote, "Only the Creator, the Father of the ages, the all-holy, knows [His gifts'] grandeur and...loveliness."

The Seleucids who persecuted the Jewish people at the time of the Maccabean revolt were terrorists. They did not just kill their enemies but did it in such a way as to try to intimidate them. For example, they did not just kill seven Jewish brothers but scalped, dismembered, and fried them one by one, while forcing the remaining brothers and their mother to watch every brutal act. The Seleucids planned that the mother’s anguish would be used to manipulate her sons into becoming traitors to their faith or that they would at least break the spirit of the mother and the Jewish nation by their terrorism.

However, the terrorists’ psychological warfare backfired on them. The mother’s relationship with the Lord and with her sons was so strong that she did not crack under pressure. She strengthened her sons to die heroic deaths, and she followed them in martyrdom. Her faith and her family’s faith was so strong that it defeated the terrorists. Contrary to what many believe, terrorism is not defeated by military might. Because terrorism is demonic, it cannot be defeated by merely human means. It can be defeated only by faith in Jesus, especially by holy families of faith (Mt 17:20-21). Therefore, we must become holy faith-filled disciples of Jesus, or we will be helpless, intimidated, manipulated victims of terrorists.

Prayer: Father, I reject the spirit of fear and accept the Holy Spirit (see 2 Tm 1:6-7; Rm 8:15).

Promise: "He, in His mercy, will give you back both breath and life." —2 Mc 7:23

Praise: St. Cecilia, her husband, and her brother-in-law were all beheaded as martyrs for their steadfast faith in Jesus.

DIE AND LET LIVE
"I will leave to the young a noble example of how to die willingly and generously for the revered and holy laws." —2 Maccabees 6:28

Jesus said: “Whoever loses his life for My sake will save it” (Lk 9:24). “Unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat. But if it dies, it produces much fruit” (Jn 12:24). In today’s first reading, Eleazar gave a fabulous example to young people of how to live and die for the Lord (2 Mc 6:31). In the very next chapter of 2 Maccabees, seven young men were brutally tortured and martyred for their faith in God. Quite possibly these young men had heard the story of Eleazar’s faithfulness and courage under pressure and were inspired by his example. These martyrs bore great fruit, as their shed blood was the seed that led to the renewal of the faith of Israel in the times of the Maccabees.

“None of us lives as his own master and none of us dies as his own master. While we live we are responsible to the Lord, and when we die we die as His servants. Both in life and death we are the Lord’s” (Rm 14:7-8). When we die as a member of the Body of Christ, our dying can bring the life of Jesus to the world (see 2 Cor 4:11-12). We pray frequently that the Blessed Virgin Mary would pray for us “now and at the hour of our death.” It might be that you may lead many more people to the Lord Jesus by the courageous, trusting manner of your death than by your holy and faithful life. Be an Eleazar. May your life and death be “a noble example” to all who hear of you (2 Mc 6:28).

Prayer: Father, "to me, 'life' means Christ; hence, dying is so much gain" (Phil 1:21). I give You my present and my future.

Promise: "The Son of Man has come to search out and save what was lost." —Lk 19:10

Praise: Sts. Anne and Joachim expressed their faith by presenting their daughter, Mary, Our Lady of Presentation, to the Temple priests at age three to serve God.

AMONG OUR GREATEST NEEDS
"A blind man sat at the side of the road begging. Hearing a crowd go by the man asked, 'What is that?' The answer came that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by." —Luke 18:35-37

Imagine if you were color-blind and nearsighted with impaired peripheral vision. Could you see? Yes. Would you need healing of your vision? Absolutely. Likewise, we can see spiritually but “we see indistinctly, as in a mirror” (1 Cor 13:12). We should not let the fact that we have some vision keep us from crying out to Jesus for vision good enough to live His abundant life.

If we don’t see God better in our spouse, what chance do we have to persevere in our wedding vows? If we don’t see more deeply into God’s plan, will we ever stop abortion? Until we see with the eyes of our hearts (Eph 1:18) our Eucharistic Lord under the appearances of bread and wine, we will not center our lives to be in communion and go to Communion. This is severe self-deprivation.

Some of us have spent thousands of dollars so that we can see better physically. We have glasses, sunglasses, reading glasses, bifocals, trifocals, contacts, eye drops, and laser surgery to improve our sight physically. It is much more important to see better spiritually. Consequently, cry out to Jesus “all the more, ‘Son of David, have pity on me!’ ” (Lk 18:39) Pray to Jesus: “Lord, I want to see” (see Lk 18:41).

Prayer: Father, may I follow Your orders exactly so that I will see rightly.

Promise: "Though the snares of the wicked are twined about me Your law I have not forgotten." —Ps 119:61

Praise: Martin forgave his ex-wife for her unfaithfulness. As she lay on her deathbed, he sat by her side, encouraging her to trust in God and receive His peace.

LET'S DIG IT UP
"I went and hid your talent in the ground."—Matthew 25:25, RSV-CE

In the ancient world, a “talent” was a large sum of money. Our Lord plainly says that He expects much from those who have been given much (Lk 12:48). We servants of the Lord are branches connected to the vine, and because of that connection, we will bear fruit (Jn 15:5). In today’s Gospel parable, the money can be compared to spiritual gifts and graces that God has given to each servant (Mt 25:14ff). God expects much in return because of such great need in suffering, sinful humanity.

If, by our inaction, we do nothing with the gifts and graces He has given us, we become dormant, petrified, and fossilized (Jn 15:6). We stifle the Spirit (1 Thes 5:19) and bear no fruit.

So, if you have buried your “talent,” go and dig it up. Stir into flame the gift of the Holy Spirit the Lord bestowed in your Baptism and Confirmation (2 Tm 1:6-7). “Receive the Holy Spirit” anew (Jn 20:22).

Fr. Al Lauer, founding and long-time author of One Bread, One Body, said: “The more I say ‘No’ to myself, the more I say ‘Yes’ to the Holy Spirit.” Therefore, deny your very self, take up your daily cross (Lk 9:23), and beg the Lord for more of the Holy Spirit (Lk 11:13). Allow the Spirit to take control of your life and bear His fruit.

Prayer: Father, prune away anything You wish in my life (Jn 15:2) to make me a fruitful branch for You.

Promise: "The day of the Lord is coming like a thief in the night." —1 Thes 5:2

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, Emmanuel, "God with us!" You became flesh and dwelt among us. Praise You for letting us see Your glory (Jn 1:14).

FAST ANSWERS TO PRAYER
"I tell you, He will give them swift justice." —Luke 18:8

There’s a certain kind of prayer that results in “swift justice.” God will not delay long over us when we pray in this way (Lk 18:7). In this way of prayer, we call out to God “day and night” (Lk 18:7) and realize that at all times, even at the best of times, we are in desperate need of God. In this prayer, we cry out: “Save us by Your power, and help me, who am alone and have no one but You, O Lord” (Est C:25). We pray with the Psalmist: “Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice!” (Ps 130:1) We pray as Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemani (Mk 14:32ff). When we pray in this way, we understand “the necessity of praying always and not losing heart” (Lk 18:1).

It takes faith to face, head on, the terrible condition of our world and our desperate need for God. However, when we pray in faith, aware of our total dependence on God, and call out to the Lord day and night, God’s “all-powerful Word from heaven’s royal throne” will bound into our doomed land (Wis 18:15). The Lord will save us. He will intervene, break through, and set us free.

Will anyone pray the prayer of necessity and faith? “When the Son of Man comes, will He find any faith on the earth?” (Lk 18:8)

Prayer: Father, "increase our faith" (Lk 17:5).

Promise: "They ranged about like horses, and bounded about like lambs, praising You, O Lord! their Deliverer." —Wis 19:9

Praise: At the age of seventy-one, St. Rose began a school for Native American children. She had strength for everything in Jesus (Phil 4:13).

FROM PREY TO PRAY
"Wherever the carcass is, there will the vultures gather." —Luke 17:37

In the world of nature, there is an interesting interplay between predator and prey. A herd of caribou is strong as long as it sticks together. The wolves test and probe the herd, searching for weaknesses and trying to isolate the weak animals from the herd.

There are some similarities between the natural world and the spiritual world. Where the spirit is weak, there Satan attacks. Likewise, where there is decay, strife, or discord among people, there Satan concentrates on picking apart the defenses until his demons have an entry way. “Wherever the carcass is, there will the vultures gather” (Lk 17:37). “The devil is prowling like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Pt 5:8).

Even when the Lord has worked renewal, if spiritual growth does not follow, the renewed area decays (see Lk 11:24-26). Satan and his demons then look “to catch those who have just come free from a life of errors” (2 Pt 2:18). If those people do not seek to grow strong in the Lord, the “vultures gather” (Lk 17:37) and spiritual death is near at hand (see 2 Pt 2:20-22).

Therefore, it is so critical for us to seek to grow daily in Jesus. Ask, seek, knock for the grace to grow (Mt 7:7). Read the Scriptures daily. Go to Mass frequently, daily if possible. To avoid becoming spiritual prey, “never cease praying” (1 Thes 5:17). “Grow strong in your holy faith through prayer in the Holy Spirit” (Jude 20). Be a “repairer of the breach” (Is 58:12) and not the person who makes the breach worse.

Prayer: Father, help me. Give me the grace, energy, and desire to allow You to grow Your new life within me (Phil 2:13).

Promise: "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims His handiwork." —Ps 19:2

Praise: After the death of her husband, St. Elizabeth gave herself entirely to serving the poor. She died at age twenty-four and was canonized just four years later.

WISE UP
"Passing into holy souls from age to age, [Wisdom] produces friends of God and prophets. For there is nought God loves, be it not one who dwells with Wisdom." —Wisdom 7:27-28

To be “friends of God and prophets,” we must be wise (Wis 7:27). To live in God’s love (Jn 15:10), we must be wise (Wis 7:28). To defeat wickedness rather than be defeated by it, we must be wise (Wis 7:30). Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah and His people would have “a spirit of wisdom” (Is 11:2). Christ crucified is “the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Cor 1:24).

Are you wise? Fools often think they are wise. Therefore, to prove we are wise we need more than our opinion or the opinions of other fools. A telltale sign of wisdom is our readiness for the end of the world, Jesus’ final coming, and Judgment Day. For example, the five wise virgins were wise because they were always ready for the Bridegroom’s return (Mt 25:1ff).

Are you ready for Jesus’ return? Are you crying out with the Christians of the last twenty centuries “Maranatha!” (“Come, Lord Jesus!” (Rv 22:20)? If you are ready for Jesus’ return now, you are probably wise in most other areas of your life. If you are not ready for Jesus’ return now, you are probably foolish in many other ways. However, you can repent and give your life to Jesus. Then you will change from a fool to a wise man or woman. Wise up.

Prayer: Father, "give me Wisdom, the attendant at Your throne, and reject me not from among Your children" (Wis 9:4).

Promise: "The reign of God is already in your midst. [Jesus] said to the disciples: 'A time will come when you will long to see one day of the Son of Man but will not see it.' " —Lk 17:21-22

Praise: St. Margaret of Scotland, by the grace of God, was "the ideal queen and mother."

SUPERNATURAL THANKSGIVING
"Was there no one to return and give thanks to God except this foreigner?" —Luke 17:18

The Samaritan leper said “Thank You” to Jesus. In return, Jesus said more than “You’re welcome.” He said: “Your faith has been your salvation” (Lk 17:19). There is a thanksgiving which is much more than courtesy and kindness. Thanksgiving can be an act of faith by which we accept salvation. Thanksgiving can be a way by which we enter into God’s heavenly courts (Ps 100:4). Thanksgiving can be Eucharist — the eternal thanksgiving of the Son to the Father in the Spirit, as expressed by Jesus’ sacrifice of Himself on the cross.

Thanksgiving in this greatest sense of the word is supernatural. This thanks can be offered only by God’s grace. Those who are most thankful supernaturally are often the very poor, the disabled, and the rejected. These people are sometimes more thankful for a crust of bread than others would be for millions of dollars and countless pleasures. Those who give this supernatural thanksgiving are often the lowly, such as Samaritans, foreigners (Lk 17:16, 18), servants (Lk 17:9), and repentant sinners (Lk 7:42).

Ask for the grace of supernatural thanksgiving. It will change your life.

Prayer: Father, "I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with all my heart" (Ps 138:1).

Promise: "Desire therefore My words; long for them and you shall be instructed." —Wis 6:11

Praise: St. Albert was a brilliant scientist, theologian, teacher, defender of the Faith, and a Doctor of the Church.

THANK GOD!
"Would he be grateful to the servant who was only carrying out his orders?" —Luke 17:9

In this month of November, we in the United States think of thanksgiving and realize that Thanksgiving is not just a day but a way of life forever. “Give thanks to God the Father always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Eph 5:20).

Do we understand who is supposed to be thanking Whom? The message of today’s Gospel reading is that any lack of thanksgiving may be more than an oversight. Possibly we think we are lords who should be thanked, rather than slaves (see Lk 17:10) who should give thanks. When we give God thanks, we acknowledge Him as not only our Source of blessings but primarily as our Lord. When we give thanks, we acknowledge gratefully that we are lowly handmaids and slaves of the Lord (see Lk 1:38). Therefore, giving thanks is not merely being polite, but having faith in the Lord, loving Him with all our hearts, and serving Him in privileged submission.

If you prayed all day, would you think you’ve done God a favor? When you go to Church, do you think you deserve a pat on the back? If you gave a lot of money to the Lord’s work, are you being generous or merely just? “Say, ‘We are useless servants. We have done no more than our duty’ ” (Lk 17:10).

Prayer: Father, may the fear of You be the beginning of giving thanks to You (see Prv 9:10).

Promise: "The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them." —Wis 3:1

Praise: Before surviving a traffic accident, Joseph did not thank God as much as he did afterward, many times a day.

SCANDALIZED OR DE-SCANDALIZED?
Jesus "said to His disciples: 'Scandals will inevitably arise, but woe to him through whom they come.' " —Luke 17:1

Throughout the history of Christianity and humanity, scandals have inevitably arisen. Gossiping about these scandals makes matters worse. However, we can work with God as He makes  even scandals work together for the good of all who love God (Rm 8:28), if we:

  • are on guard so as not to cause scandals (Lk 17:3),
  • are on guard to prevent scandals (Lk 17:3),
  • correct our brothers and sisters (Lk 17:3),
  • forgive others 70 x 7 (Lk 17:4; Mt 18:22),
  • pray for an increase of faith (Lk 17:5), and
  • use our faith to move trees, mountains, and anything else so as to further God’s kingdom (Lk 17:6).

Of course, we cannot do all these things by our power but only by the power of the Holy Spirit (see Zec 4:6). Throughout history, the Spirit has transformed the worst situations, and will do it in our times also. Consequently, ask for the Holy Spirit (see Lk 11:13) to be stirred into flame in your life (2 Tm 1:6-7). “Follow the Spirit’s lead” (Gal 5:25) as the Spirit lusts against the flesh (Gal 5:17) and convicts the world (Jn 16:8). You will not cause scandals but cause them to be turned into blessings. De-scandalize the scandalized.

Prayer: Father, may I let the Holy Spirit work through me to renew the face of the earth and rid it of scandals (see Ps 104:30).

Promise: "God is the Witness of [the blasphemer's] inmost self and the sure Observer of his heart and the Listener to his tongue." —Wis 1:6

Praise: Today's saint, born Maria Francesca Cabrini, changed her name to that of the patron of missions, St. Francis Xavier. She spent her life caring for the poor, the sick, and the abandoned.

GET FIT FOR JESUS
"I do not know you." —Matthew 25:12

At first reading, the wise virgins may appear selfish when they do not share their oil with the foolish virgins (Mt 25:8-9). However, some things cannot be shared. For example, a marathon runner must prepare for a long time to get in condition for a marathon. If a person were to approach a long-distance runner and say: “Give me some of your endurance,” the runner would rightly respond: “I cannot give that to you. That kind of endurance is only gained through long training and daily discipline.”

Likewise, the spiritual “shape” required to be “ready to greet [the Lord] when He comes again” is something that cannot simply be handed from a person who is spiritually mature to a person who is not. Our relationship to Jesus, the Bridegroom (Mk 2:19), is similar to a marriage. A marriage relationship is cultivated and developed by daily communication, sacrifice, and love. Spouses who do not attempt to grow in love for each other might one day look at their spouse and proclaim: “I do not know you” (Mt 25:12).

Now is the time (2 Cor 6:2). Start today to get to know Jesus more deeply. Spend at least five extra minutes each day this week in prayer with the Lord. Then spend ten extra minutes a day next week reading the Gospels. Come to know Jesus (Phil 3:10).

Prayer: Father, draw me ever nearer to Your Son. Create in me a new heart for Him. May Your love be for me better than life (Ps 63:4).

Promise: "If we believe that Jesus died and rose, God will bring forth with Him from the dead those also who have fallen asleep believing in Him." —1 Thes 4:14

Praise: Praise Jesus, Who is coming again to judge the living and the dead. Maranatha! "Come, Lord Jesus!" (Rv 22:20)

"THE LITTLE WAY"
"If you can trust a man in little things, you can also trust him in greater." —Luke 16:10

In what small, ordinary, unseen, and even annoying ways can I exhibit the obedience of faith (Rm 1:5) today? I am called to be faithful to many “little things” (Lk 16:10) right now, but I don’t want to do them. I’d rather display my worthiness to all in the great moments. However, greatness in great matters is born of thousands of small matters in which we have cultivated the habit of obediently serving God (see Mt 25:21).

A disciplined habit of prayer is good — but discipline is just one part of trustworthiness. Our motives matter. The motives of carrying our daily cross and sacrificially loving transcend even a life of faithful diligence. Daily dying to ourselves (Lk 9:23) leads to a life in which ever larger matters are handled in trustworthiness (Lk 16:10). St. Therese of Lisieux strove to follow her “little way” of lovingly serving God.

The apostles followed Jesus faithfully in small matters daily for three years, but failed at the great moment of Jesus’ arrest and Passion (see Mk 14:50). Thus, success in small matters does not guarantee trustworthiness in great matters. Yet Jesus does say that faithfulness in small matters is a prerequisite. So, follow Jesus today in self-denial, humility, obedience, and love. Be trustworthy in small matters (see Lk 16:10). Be willing to serve the Lord in small, unseen obedience.

What little thing can I do to be obedient today so that I might not fail when larger challenges arise?

Prayer: Father, every day of my life, may I serve You with gladness, joy, and faithfulness.

Promise: "To Him, the God Who alone is wise, may glory be given through Jesus Christ unto endless ages. Amen." —Rm 16:27

Praise: St. Martin was such an anointed evangelist that Jesus converted entire families and villages through him.

THE SACRAMENTS OF INITIATIVE - One Bread, One Body, 11/10/2023

THE SACRAMENTS OF INITIATIVE
"The worldly take more initiative than the other-worldly when it comes to dealing with their own kind." —Luke 16:8

“Unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the Lord guard the city, in vain does the guard keep vigil” (Ps 127:1). “It is the Lord’s blessing that brings wealth, and no effort can substitute for it” (Prv 10:22). No matter how hard we try, we cannot make the works of God happen. “It is God Who, in His good will toward you, begets in you any measure of desire or achievement” (Phil 2:13).

Some people infer from this that Christians should not take initiative in building God’s kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. However, the Lord didn’t tell us to take no initiative but rather to not think that our initiative is the cause of His works.

The Lord wants His people to take more initiative than “the movers and the shakers” of this world (see Lk 16:8). Like the early Church and the Church throughout the centuries, we are to take bold initiatives for God’s kingdom. The Church teaches: “The initiative of lay Christians is necessary especially when the matter involves discovering or inventing the means for permeating social, political, and economic realities with the demands of Christian doctrine and life. This initiative is a normal element of the life of the Church” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 899). We Christians are a people of strong initiative, for we follow God Who initiates everything good (Jas 1:17). He does this because He is Love (1 Jn 4:16). We do this because “the love of Christ impels us” (2 Cor 5:14).

Prayer: Father, may zeal for Your house consume me (Jn 2:17).

Promise: "They who received no word of Him will see Him, and they who have never heard will understand." —Rm 15:21

Praise: Pope St. Leo the Great protected Rome from the attack of Attila. He also re-established the office of the diaconate within the Church.

CONSUMED BY LOVE FOR THE CHURCH
The angel "brought me back to the entrance of the temple, and I saw water flowing out." —Ezekiel 47:1

From the Church flow the living waters which will change our culture of death into a civilization of love and life and “renew the face of the earth” (Ps 104:30).

For the Church to fully exercise her authority and power, she must be “built as an edifice of spirit, into a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Pt 2:5). “In Him you are being built into this temple, to become a dwelling place for God in the Spirit” (Eph 2:22). Everyone “must be careful how he builds” (1 Cor 3:10).

For the Church to be built up, bring Jesus to the world, and make every thought captive to Christ (2 Cor 10:5), she must be cleansed as Jesus cleansed the Temple (see Jn 2:15ff).

Let zeal for God’s Church consume us (Jn 2:17; Ps 69:10). Let us cleanse the Church by first repenting of our sins in and against the Church. Let us build up the Church, especially by forming small Christian communities. Then we will see the Church exalted as the Body of Christ (e.g. Eph 1:22-23), the bride of Christ (e.g. Rv 22:17), “the pillar and bulwark of truth” (1 Tm 3:15), “ ‘a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people He claims for His own to proclaim the glorious works’ of the One Who called you from darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Pt 2:9). Love the Church as Christ loves the Church. Give yourself up for her (Eph 5:25).

Prayer: Father, may zeal for Your Church consume me.

Promise: "Are you not aware that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?" —1 Cor 3:16

Praise: In honoring the church of St. John Lateran, "the mother of all the churches," we honor all parishes as we form the body of Christ. Praise You, Jesus, "Head of the Church" (Eph 1:22).

GOOD TO THE LAST DROP
"If any man comes to Me without hating his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too, he cannot be My disciple." —Luke 14:26, JB

It takes everything we’ve got to live the Christian life. If we don’t make our relationship with Jesus our “all in all” (see Lk 14:26), if we don’t take up His cross daily (Lk 9:23; 14:27), if we don’t renounce all our possessions (Lk 14:33), we will not have what it takes to build the tower (Lk 14:28), fight the war (Lk 14:31), or run the race of the Christian life (2 Tm 4:7). If we successfully complete the Christian life, we will have crossed the finish line with nothing to spare. It takes every ounce of strength, every second of time, and our last penny — all that we have. “Our God is a consuming Fire” (Heb 12:29). If we give anything less than everything, we will fall short of what is necessary to obtain the kingdom of God (Mt 13:44-46).

Therefore, amazed that the Lord would accept our little “everythings,” let us pour out our lives “like a libation” (see 2 Tm 4:6). Let us love Jesus as He loves us — with all our hearts, with all our souls, with all our strength, and with all our minds (Lk 10:27). With great joy and thanksgiving, let us give the Lord our “all”; constantly, daily, till our dying day. Let us drain our lives to the last drop in imitation of Jesus, Who poured out His blood and life for love of us.

Prayer: Father, use me and use me up.

Promise: "Owe no debt to anyone except the debt that binds us to love one another. He who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law." —Rm 13:8

Praise: Fr. John served the Church for over sixty years, well past "retirement." He served the Lord with gladness all his days (Ps 100:2).
