THE SAINT WHO LOVED ME MOST

"Dearly beloved, we are God's children now; what we shall later be has not yet come to light. We know that when it comes to light we shall be like Him." -1 John 3:2

God is holy. He "is a consuming Fire" (Heb 12:29), and He wants us to be consumed with the desire to be holy as He is holy (1 Pt 1:16). Nevertheless, even baptized people often have a weak desire for holiness. On this holy day celebrating all the saints, the Lord especially tries to increase our desire for holiness.

Today, focus on the saint you know best, the saint who loved you the most. This person is usually not a famous saint but a family member or friend who truly laid down his life for love of you. You care about this saint more than all the other saints. Although this person is probably not canonized, you know from your personal experience of his or her love that, if he or she is not in heaven, hardly anyone is. Because you love and admire this person, you want to be a saint too.

This love can motivate you (see 2 Cor 5:14) to desire to be holy more than you desire anything else in life. Then you will be holy (Mt 5:6), for the Lord will make you holy by His grace. However, God's holiness is not forced on you but accepted only by those who desire it.

The saint who loved you most is a key to desiring holiness the most. On this holy day, use your key.

Prayer: Father, may Your name be recognized as holy because I, Your child, am holy (see Mt 6:9).

Promise: "These are the ones who have survived the great period of trial; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." -Rv 7:14

Praise: (Pope) St. Gregory III dedicated a chapel to all saints and martyrs on this date in the eighth century. All Saints, from St. Aaron to St. Zygmunt Gorazdowski, pray for us.

"If God is for us, who can be against us?" -Romans 8:31

St. Paul asks: "Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Trial, or distress, or persecution, or hunger, or nakedness, or danger, or the sword?" (Rm 8:35) This was no mere rhetorical question for Paul. He had experienced first-hand all of these dangers and more (see 2 Cor 11:23ff). He knew for "certain" that nothing could separate him from the love of God (Rm 8:38, 39). This certain knowledge of God's personal love for him gave Paul the courage to be more than a conqueror (Rm 8:37). No threat could deter Paul from carrying out his mission.

When the Pharisees told Jesus that Herod was trying to kill him (Lk 13:31), this was no idle threat. Herod had just finished killing John the Baptizer, and he would also kill his own son who posed a threat to his kingdom. Jesus, however, was also certain of His Father's enduring love for Him. Undaunted, Jesus proceeded directly toward Jerusalem, Herod's hometown (Lk 13:33). It turned out that Herod indeed had the chance to kill Jesus, but didn't even harm Him (Lk 23:8ff). No threat could deter Jesus from carrying out His mission.

We are baptized into Jesus, and like Paul, we have a mission from God. "Do not be afraid" (Mt 10:31). Let no threat deter you from carrying out your God-given mission.

Prayer: Father, I will not be intimidated (Mt 10:26) by threats to stop me from loving and serving You.

Promise: "He stood at the right hand of the poor man, to save him from those who would condemn him." -Ps 109:31

Praise: Carol was turned away from several religious orders before becoming a third-order Carmelite.

ARE YOU SAVED? - One Bread, One Body, 10/30/2019

Wednesday, October 30, 2019

Romans 8:26-30, Psalm 13:4-6, Luke 13:22-30
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/103019.cfm

ARE YOU SAVED?

"Someone asked Him, 'Lord, are they few in number who are to be saved?' " -Luke 13:23

The above question to Jesus is slanted by the use of the word "few." Today the question would be re-slanted: "Lord, isn't almost everyone going to heaven?" Jesus answered the original question not by saying that only a few people will be saved, but He certainly gives us no reason to presume that almost everyone will be saved. Jesus "replied, 'Try to come in through the narrow door. Many, I tell you, will try to enter and be unable' " (Lk 13:24). This seems to imply that many people are in hell.

However, Jesus wills everyone "to be saved and come to know the truth" (1 Tm 2:4). Jesus' saving death was not in vain. Jesus has changed and will change the hardest hearts. Because of His grace, love, and mercy, we can have a "blessed assurance" of our salvation despite our resistance to repentance and conversion. Nonetheless, there is no such thing as "blessed presumption."

We can "be in that number" of heavenly saints by living our Baptisms. This means we reject Satan completely and love the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit with all our hearts, all our souls, all our minds, and all our strength (Lk 10:27). Right now, accept Jesus as Lord, Savior, and God on His terms. Give yourself totally to the Lord. Be saved.

Prayer: Father, I confess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in my heart that You raised Him from the dead (Rm 10:9).

Promise: "We know that God makes all things work together for the good of those who love Him and have been called according to His decree." -Rm 8:28

Praise: Mary Beth said some words of encouragement to a friend and found out, years later, that what she had said turned her friend's life around.

GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS OF HOPE? - One Bread, One Body, 10/29/2019

Tuesday, October 29, 2019

Romans 8:18-25, Psalm 126:1-6, Luke 13:18-21
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/102919.cfm

GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS OF HOPE?

"Hoping for what we cannot see means awaiting it with patient endurance." -Romans 8:25

A lengthy waiting period can either make or break our hope. We can react by growing bitter and losing hope. "Hope deferred makes the heart sick" (Prv 13:12). For example, a man had been sick for thirty-eight years (Jn 5:5ff). Although he daily placed himself in a position of hope by the side of healing waters, he didn't expect to be healed. When Jesus came to him, he had excuses instead of expectations (Jn 5:7). He built his life around going through the motions of hope, but was "without hope" (Eph 2:12).

Alternatively, we can use a long and difficult waiting period to increase in hope and get better instead of bitter. "Affliction makes for endurance, and endurance for tested virtue, and tested virtue for hope" (Rm 5:3-4). Instead of breaking our hope, the difficulty and long time without change makes for a hope full of patient endurance (Rm 8:24-25). Simeon (Lk 2:25ff) and Anna (Lk 2:36ff) used a long period of waiting to grow better, not bitter. Instead of going through the motions of hope, they devoted their hearts to God and became full of hope.

For what have you been hoping and praying a long time? Are you going through the motions of praying for these intentions without having any real hope of the Lord answering your prayers? Like the growth of a mustard seed, sometimes in God's kingdom things take a long time. Ask God for an increase of hope. With Simeon and Anna, say: "this hope will not leave us disappointed, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us" (Rm 5:5).

Prayer: Jesus, "Hope of Glory" (Col 1:27), encourage me when I lose hope (Sir 17:19). May I "rejoice in hope" (Rm 12:12).

Promise: "In hope we were saved." -Rm 8:24

Praise: Chris and Jo's marriage was saved when they gave up their own desires, and gave it all to the Lord.

PASS IT ON - One Bread, One Body, 10/28/2019

Monday, October 28, 2019, Sts. Simon & Jude

Ephesians 2:19-22, Psalm 19:2-5, Luke 6:12-16
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/102819.cfm

PASS IT ON

"He called His disciples and selected twelve of them to be His apostles." -Luke 6:13

Recently, a bishop was ordained by the Church. He later told people that he cried tears of joy as hands were imposed on him. He spoke of the awe he felt at realizing that the hands laid on his head traced an unbroken chain of succession all the way back to Jesus' first calling of His apostles.

The Lord renews the face of the Church (see Ps 104:30) through the apostles and their successors, the bishops. The Church is built upon "the foundation of the apostles" (Eph 2:20; Rv 21:14). Jesus works closely through the apostles and their successors, the bishops - so much so that He assures us that if we listen to them, we listen to Him (Lk 10:16). However, if we disregard or ignore the teaching of the magisterium of the Church, we disregard and reject Jesus Himself and God the Father (Lk 10:16).

Do you know the teaching of the Church? Have you ever studied the Catechism of the Catholic Church or the Bible? Take advantage of the grace of this apostolic feast day. Listen to the ones who carry on the teaching ministry of Jesus (Lk 10:16). Decide today to daily read the Bible, the book of the Church. Decide today to study the Catechism. Be built into the apostolic Church and "become a dwelling place for God in the Spirit" (Eph 2:22).

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for the privilege of hearing You. May I hear You as You wish to be heard: through the teaching and authority of those You have sent.

Promise: "You are fellow citizens of the saints and members of the household of God." -Eph 2:19

Praise: St. Jude was also called Thaddeus from the Aramaic for "wise."

PM eNewsletter 30th Sunday in ordinary time

October 27th 30th Sunday in ordinary time.

Jesus, it is good for us to pray for all those who have died and gone before us.

Give us the inspiration to pray especially for those in purgatory who have no one to pray for them.

Let us be aware that those in purgatory depend on us to get them into the glory of heaven through our
prayers, masses, and the charitable acts that we do for their release.

Jesus, continue to grace us to understand that our brothers and sisters who have gone before us have
changed into eternal beings that are now in the communion of saints forever and ever.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday "LOW," I AM WITH YOU
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=10/27/2019

"The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds." -Sirach 35:17

Clouds can be a sign of God's presence or, figuratively speaking, a barrier preventing us from "getting
through" to God. Clouds present no problem to the prayer of the lowly, for their prayer pierces the clouds.

We can surmise that the prayer of many people is not "getting through" to God, for many people pray
infrequently. If they were "getting through," they probably would be encouraged to pray always (see Lk 18:1).
Who wants to keep calling a phone number when you seldom "get through"? Many of us must not be lowly, or we
would be "getting through" and praying more.

Signs of not being lowly are:

* not forgiving (see Mt 6:15),
* not going to Confession often,
* not submitting to the authority of the Lord through the Church (see Heb 13:17),
* focusing on ourselves (see Lk 18:11-12),
* comparing ourselves with others (see Lk 18:11),
* not washing others' feet through service (see Jn 13:14-15), and
* trying to live the "high life" of affluence and comfort.

Jesus is lowly - from the stable at Bethlehem to the cross on Calvary to appearing as bread and wine in the
Eucharist. Be like the lowly Jesus, and your prayer will pierce the clouds.

Prayer: Jesus, gentle and lowly of heart, make my heart like Yours (see Mt 11:29).

Promise: "The Lord will continue to rescue me from all attempts to do me harm and will bring me safe to His
heavenly kingdom." -2 Tm 4:18

Praise: "This is the Jesus God has raised up, and we are his witnesses" (Acts 2:32). Alleluia!

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

"HOPES OF MILLIONS"

The annual celebration of World Food Day emphasizes ... the needs, yearnings and hopes of millions of
persons who lack bread each day. Increasingly, there are more people who sadly make up part of that great
number of human beings who have nothing, or almost nothing to eat. It should be the opposite and yet
recent statistics are a painful proof of how international solidarity appears to be cooling.

"EFFECTIVE HELP"

The poor expect from us an effective help that takes them out of their misery... In this twenty-first
century that has seen considerable advances in the field of technology, science, communications and
infrastructure, we ought to feel shame for not having achieved the same advances in humanity and
solidarity, and so satisfy the primary needs of the most disadvantaged.

"WE MUST DO BETTER"

We are all called to go further. We can and we must do better for the helpless. We must move to concrete
action, so that the scourge of hunger disappears completely.

* not washing others' feet through service (see Jn 13:14-15), and
* trying to live the "high life" of affluence and comfort.

Jesus is lowly - from the stable at Bethlehem to the cross on Calvary to appearing as bread and wine in the Eucharist. Be like the lowly Jesus, and your prayer will pierce the clouds.

Prayer: Jesus, gentle and lowly of heart, make my heart like Yours (see Mt 11:29).

Promise: "The Lord will continue to rescue me from all attempts to do me harm and will bring me safe to His heavenly kingdom." -2 Tm 4:18

Praise: "This is the Jesus God has raised up, and we are his witnesses" (Acts 2:32). Alleluia!

DEADLINES CAN BE "LIFELINES" - One Bread, One Body, 10/26/2019

Saturday, October 26, 2019

Romans 8:1-11, Psalm 24:1-6, Luke 13:1-9

DEADLINES CAN BE "LIFELINES"

"In answer, the man said, 'Sir, leave it another year while I hoe around it and manure it; then perhaps it will bear fruit. If not, it shall be cut down.' " -Luke 13:8-9

The Lord has stated clearly that He expects us to bear fruit which is abundant (Jn 15:5) and lasting (Jn 15:16). He has given us all we need to bear the fruit of the Spirit, the fruit of holiness (see Gal 5:22-23), and the fruit of evangelization.

If we are truly holy, we will evangelize effectively. The Lord is patient with us. He does not expect us to bear fruit overnight (see Mk 4:27), but He will not wait for our fruit forever. For example, sometimes the Lord sets a deadline of one more year (see Lk 13:8). If we do not accept His grace to bear fruit within a year, then the deadline will literally be our spiritual death. However, God wills that the deadline be a "lifeline" - the time of full life and fruitfulness.

We bear fruit by:

* abiding in Jesus (Jn 15:5),
* repenting and being pruned (Jn 15:2),
* letting our soil be cultivated (see Lk 13:8) by God the Father, the Vinegrower (see Jn 15:1),
* letting ourselves be fertilized (see Lk 13:8) by "the discipline of the Lord" (Heb 12:5), and
* the power of the Holy Spirit (see Acts 1:8).

Bear fruit for Jesus. The clock is ticking. Will God's deadline be your lifeline?

Prayer: Father, may I love You and people so much that I will not settle for anything less than bearing maximum fruit.

Promise: "There is no condemnation now for those who are in Christ Jesus." -Rm 8:1

Praise: After raising one son, Maria remarried and adopted four more children by the grace of God.

FROM CERTAIN DEFEAT TO TOTAL VICTORY - One Bread, One Body, 10/25/2019

FROM CERTAIN DEFEAT TO TOTAL VICTORY

"I see in my body's members another law at war with the law of my mind; this makes me the prisoner of the law of sin in my members." -Romans 7:23

There is a civil war going on inside us. We are compelled to do not the good we will to do but the evil we do not intend (Rm 7:19). We are even forced to wage war on our own souls when we satisfy our carnal desires (1 Pt 2:11). All human beings by nature cannot help but lose this interior war. We are thus prisoners of war (see Rm 7:23). We are in a wretched condition. Each of us cries out: "Who can free me from this body under the power of death?" (Rm 7:24) The answer to the human dilemma is: "All praise to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!" (Rm 7:25)

Jesus is our only Hope, and the only Hope we need. The name of Jesus is the only name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). Jesus is the only Way out of our wretchedness, defeat, and slavery (see Jn 14:6). Jesus is the only Way to victory over our fallen nature, Satan, and the world (see Jn 14:6).

We receive a new nature and life in Christ when we are baptized. To live "through Him, with Him, and in Him," we must live our Baptisms with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength (Mk 12:30). Therefore, let us renew again our baptismal promises. Reject Satan, all his works, and all his empty promises. Believe in God the Father through the Son and in the Holy Spirit. Live fully your Baptism into Jesus (Rm 6:3). Be free and victorious.

Prayer: Father, may I "grasp and live the immense, extraordinary richness and responsibility" of my Baptism (Lay Members of Christ's Faithful People, Pope St. John Paul II, 61).

Promise: "When you are going with your opponent to appear before a magistrate, try to settle with him on the way lest he turn you over to the judge." -Lk 12:58

Praise: George was delivered from years of drug addiction for a new life in Christ.

IS HE LORD OF YOUR BODY? - One Bread, One Body, 10/24/2019

Thursday, October 24, 2019, St. Anthony Mary Claret

Romans 6:19-23, Psalm 1:1-4, 6, Luke 12:49-53
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/102419.cfm

IS HE LORD OF YOUR BODY?

"Just as you formerly enslaved your bodies to impurity and licentiousness for their degradation, make them now the servants of justice for their sanctification." -Romans 6:19

The bodies of those baptized into Jesus are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:19). The Lord wants us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices to Him (Rm 12:1). The Lord commands us to make ourselves, including our bodies, His slaves (Rm 6:22). Then our bodies will be slaves to righteousness (Rm 6:19, RNAB). This will result in our sanctification. Otherwise, our bodies will be slaves to impurity and to lawlessness (Rm 6:19, RNAB).

Obviously, the Lord is very concerned with our bodies. He created them. Jesus Himself has a body. God's plan of salvation will culminate in the resurrection of the bodies of all people for Judgment Day. Jesus promised to raise the bodies of His disciples from the dead into eternal life.

When you receive the body of Christ, Holy Communion, into your body, consecrate your body to the Lord. When you say "Amen" to the words "Body of Christ" at Holy Communion, present your body to be in total communion with the Lord forever. The body is "for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body" (1 Cor 6:13). Accept Jesus as Lord of your life and your body.

Prayer: Father, teach me to respect my body as made in Your image and likeness (Gn 1:27).

Promise: "I have come to light a fire on the earth. How I wish the blaze were ignited!" -Lk 12:49

Praise: At the First Vatican Council, where St. Anthony was a staunch defender of the doctrine of papal infallibility, he won the admiration of his fellow bishops.

DIVINE LOVE AND OUR RESPONSIBILITY - One Bread, One Body, 10/23/2019

Wednesday, October 23, 2019, St. John of Capistrano

Romans 6:12-18, Psalm 124:1-8, Luke 12:39-48
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/102319.cfm

DIVINE LOVE AND OUR RESPONSIBILITY

"When much has been given a man, much will be required of him. More will be asked of a man to whom more has been entrusted." -Luke 12:48

We Catholic Christians rejoice that we have the fullness of the faith. No one can receive any more than the fullness.

We receive the Body and the Blood, the soul and the divinity of Jesus in Holy Communion. What more can God do for us?

All Christians have by virtue of Baptism a double, simultaneous indwelling - God is in us and we are in Him (see Jn 6:56; 17:23). God has given us "immeasurably more than we ask or imagine" (Eph 3:20).

God even became a Man, died on the cross, and rose from the dead for our salvation. "There is no greater love than this" (Jn 15:13).

God has given us a new nature (see 2 Pt 1:4) and made us " 'a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people He claims for His own to proclaim the glorious works' of the One Who called [us] from darkness into His marvelous light" (1 Pt 2:9).

All this is only part of the beginning of the manifestation of God's love for us. Our future is "full of hope" (Jer 29:11), for "eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love Him" (1 Cor 2:9).

It is a profound understatement to say that the Lord has given us much and more than much. Because we are perfectly and infinitely loved, much more is required of us (Lk 12:48). Live and love accordingly.

Prayer: Father, make my life holy - of the highest quality.

Promise: "Offer yourselves to God as men who have come back from the dead to life, and your bodies to God as weapons for justice." -Rm 6:13

Praise: St. John of Capistrano was a lawyer and judge before becoming a Franciscan priest. He preached in Italy, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Russia.

"AMAZING GRACE" - One Bread, One Body, 10/22/2019

Tuesday, October 22, 2019, Pope St. John Paul II

Romans 5:12, 15, 17-21, Psalm 40:7-10, 17, Luke 12:35-38
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/102219.cfm

"AMAZING GRACE"

"Despite the increase of sin, grace has far surpassed it." -Romans 5:20

Most people believe that sin is increasing. Look at abortion, racism, ethnic cleansings, promiscuity, violence, the breakdown of the family, economic injustices, persecution, etc. Yet where sin increases, grace overflows "all the more."

Consequently, grace is always sufficient (2 Cor 12:9). The most evil, sinful situation is always surpassed by God's grace. No circumstance in life is ever hopeless. There is never reason to despair. There is always reason to hope. Thus, we can "rejoice in hope" (Rm 12:12), for it "will not leave us disappointed" (Rm 5:5). We can "rejoice in the Lord always" (Phil 4:4), for from His fullness we receive grace in place of grace (Jn 1:16, RNAB).

To live the life of grace, we must accept God's grace. We do this by living in faith and in good works (Eph 2:8, 10). Day after day, circumstance after circumstance, decide to trust God rather than do your own thing. Work for God and not for perishable food (Jn 6:27). Let Jesus be the Lord of every detail of your life. Then you will live in grace.

Prayer: Father, may grace come constantly to me and through me.

Promise: "Should he happen to come at midnight or before sunrise and find them prepared, it will go well with them." -Lk 12:38

Praise: Pope St. John Paul II was born in Poland, came of age under communism, and attended an underground seminary. Little did he know that he would be the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. He visited 129 countries as pope and urged the world to "Open wide the doors to Christ."

LOOK "ON THE FAITH OF YOUR CHURCH" - One Bread, One Body, 10/21/2019

Romans 4:20-25, Luke 1:69-75, Luke 12:13-21

LOOK "ON THE FAITH OF YOUR CHURCH"

"The words, 'It was credited to him,' were not written with him alone in view; they were intended for us too. For our faith will be credited to us also if we believe in Him Who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead." -Romans 4:23-24

God promised Abraham that He would remove the supposed curse of childlessness and make him the father of many nations. Although Abraham was nearing one hundred years old without these promises fulfilled (Rm 4:19), "he never questioned or doubted God's promise; rather, he was strengthened in faith and gave glory to God, fully persuaded that God could do whatever He had promised" (Rm 4:20-21).

Are you fully convinced of God's promise to provide for your financial future through your faith expressed in tithing and almsgiving? (see Lk 12:16ff) Are you fully convinced that the Lord will plan your family without you taking matters into your hands through contraception? Are you fully convinced that all your decisions in life should be made so as to inherit God's promise of eternal life with Him in heaven?

We are saved by grace through faith (Eph 2:8). Jesus repeatedly said: "Your faith has been your salvation" (e.g. Lk 17:19). It is impossible to please God without faith (Heb 11:6), and the purpose of life is to please God. Before receiving Holy Communion at Mass, the Church prays for the Lord to look at our faith. We are the people of faith.

In Christ, you are greater than Abraham (see Mt 11:11). Have a faith greater than Abraham's. "Walk by faith" (2 Cor 5:7).

Prayer: Father, may our culture not limit my faith, but my faith transform our culture.

Promise: "Avoid greed in all its forms. A man may be wealthy, but his possessions do not guarantee him life." -Lk 12:15

Praise: Joy turned down a marriage proposal to answer a call to be the bride of the Bridegroom in a vocation to a religious order of sisters.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THE REVOLUTION IN PRAYER
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=10/20/2019

"As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight, but when he let his hands
rest, Amalek had the better of the fight." -Exodus 17:11

Moses at first prayed intermittently while Joshua fought a battle. Moses learned from experience that he
needed to pray continually during the time of the battle. Moses had no thought of praying always during
daily life; he was just learning to pray always during a battle.

Well over a thousand years later, Jesus spoke of "the necessity of praying always and not losing heart"
(Lk 18:1). No one had ever said such things about prayer. Jesus revolutionized the meaning, practice, and
power of prayer by baptizing us in the Holy Spirit (see Mk 1:8). The Spirit "helps us in our weakness, for
we do not know how to pray as we ought" (Rm 8:26). Praying in the Spirit, we can pray:

*always (1 Thes 5:17),
*to our Father as the Spirit cries out in our hearts "Abba" ("Father") (Gal 4:6),
*for our enemies (Mt 5:44),
*in other languages (see 1 Cor 12:10),
*with the angels and saints at the throne of God (see Rv 5:8),
*with the power to "renew the face of the earth" (Ps 104:30),
*and fast so as to drive out demons (Mt 17:21, NAB).

Are you praying B.C. or A.D.? Are you praying before Pentecost or after Pentecost? Are you praying always
in the Spirit? Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit so that I will pray my best.

Promise: "I tell you, He will give them swift justice." -Lk 18:8

Praise: "Because of his affliction he shall see the light in fullness of days; through his suffering, my
servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear" (Is 53:11). Praise the risen Jesus!

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

"LACK OF POLITICAL WILL"

There is a fundamental lack of political will. What is needed is the willingness to end hunger, and this
ultimately will not happen without a moral conviction that is shared by all peoples and all religious
persuasions, where the integral good of the person is at the heart of all initiatives and consists in
"doing to another what we would want done to ourselves."

DON'T BE INDIFFERENT

... These are some reflections I wish to share with those men and women who do not allow themselves to
succumb to indifference; who hear the cry of those who do not have the minimum needed to lead a dignified
life.

THE CHURCH AND THE POOR

For her part, the Catholic Church, in the exercise of the mission with which her divine Founder has
entrusted her, struggles daily throughout the world against hunger and malnutrition in multiple ways and
through her various structures and associations, remembering that those who suffer from misery are not
different from us. They share our flesh and blood. They deserve ... a friendly hand to help and support
them, in such a way that no one is left behind, so that in our world fraternal solidarity may boast its
own identity card and citizenship, beyond any flashy slogans void of substance.

THE REVOLUTION IN PRAYER - One Bread, One Body, 10/20/2019

Sunday, October 20, 2019, 29th Sunday Ordinary Time

Exodus 17:8-13, 2 Timothy 3:14-4:2, Psalm 121:1-8, Luke 18:1-8
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/102019.cfm

THE REVOLUTION IN PRAYER

"As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight, but when he let his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight." -Exodus 17:11

Moses at first prayed intermittently while Joshua fought a battle. Moses learned from experience that he needed to pray continually during the time of the battle. Moses had no thought of praying always during daily life; he was just learning to pray always during a battle.

Well over a thousand years later, Jesus spoke of "the necessity of praying always and not losing heart" (Lk 18:1). No one had ever said such things about prayer. Jesus revolutionized the meaning, practice, and power of prayer by baptizing us in the Holy Spirit (see Mk 1:8). The Spirit "helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought" (Rm 8:26). Praying in the Spirit, we can pray:

* always (1 Thes 5:17),
* to our Father as the Spirit cries out in our hearts "Abba" ("Father") (Gal 4:6),
* for our enemies (Mt 5:44),
* in other languages (see 1 Cor 12:10),
* with the angels and saints at the throne of God (see Rv 5:8),
* with the power to "renew the face of the earth" (Ps 104:30),
* and fast so as to drive out demons (Mt 17:21, NAB).

Are you praying B.C. or A.D.? Are you praying before Pentecost or after Pentecost? Are you praying always in the Spirit? Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit so that I will pray my best.

Promise: "I tell you, He will give them swift justice." -Lk 18:8

Praise: "Because of his affliction he shall see the light in fullness of days; through his suffering, my servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear" (Is 53:11). Praise the risen Jesus!

"A LIFE OF FAITH" (GAL 2:20) - One Bread, One Body, 10/19/2019

Saturday, October 19, 2019, St. Isaac Jogues,, St. John de Brébeuf &, the North American Martyrs

Romans 4:13, 16-18, Psalm 105:6-9, 42-43, Luke 12:8-12
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/101919.cfm

"A LIFE OF FAITH" (GAL 2:20)

"Hence, all depends on faith, everything is grace." -Romans 4:16

All depends on faith - marriage, parenting, finances, health, education, happiness, security, etc. Therefore, in every area of our lives, we should seek opportunities to act in faith. We should not try to maintain the status quo but break new ground by acting in faith.

Would daily prayer with your spouse take faith? If so, do it. Would having another child take faith? Whatever it takes, "walk by faith" (2 Cor 5:7). Where are the faith opportunities in your life? Would it take more faith to quit or continue your job? Would home-schooling your children take faith? How much money would you need to give to God's work to be in a position of faith? Are your insurance policies "crutches" limiting the free exercise of your faith? Is your savings account preventing you from believing in the Lord's promise to give us our daily bread? (Mt 6:11)

In our culture, we try to be in control and operate by faith as infrequently as possible. Rather, we should maximize our faith opportunities, seeking to walk by faith and not by sight (2 Cor 5:7).

Prayer: Jesus, may my life not be my own but a life of faith in You, "Who loved me and gave [Yourself] for me" (Gal 2:20).

Promise: "The Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment all that should be said." -Lk 12:12

Praise: St. John de Brébeuf with other North American missionaries were captured, tortured, mutilated, and killed by North American natives as they worked to spread the faith in Jesus.

THE GOSPEL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - One Bread, One Body, 10/18/2019

Friday, October 18, 2019, St. Luke

2 Timothy 4:10-17, Psalm 145:10-13, 17-18, Luke 10:1-9
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/101819.cfm

THE GOSPEL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

"I have no one with me but Luke." -2 Timothy 4:11

St. Luke never saw or heard Jesus, but he knew things about Him that even Jesus' closest followers had not realized. This motivated Luke to write his Gospel and its sequel, the Acts of the Apostles. Luke epitomizes Jesus' statement: "Blest are they who have not seen and have believed" (Jn 20:29). Although Luke had not seen Jesus, he knew Jesus more deeply than many of those who had walked and talked with Jesus (see 1 Pt 1:8).

The Holy Spirit gave Luke many special insights into the person of Jesus. Thus, many have called his Gospel the "Gospel of the Holy Spirit." Likewise, his writing of the Acts of the Apostles displays the acts of the early Church through the power of the Spirit.

Luke shows us that it is better for us that Jesus ascended to heaven and sent the Holy Spirit (Jn 16:7). Life in the Spirit is the only way to intimacy with Jesus, "for the Spirit scrutinizes all matters, even the deep things of God" (1 Cor 2:10). The Spirit guides us to all truth (Jn 16:13), and Jesus is the Truth (Jn 14:6). "No one can say, 'Jesus is Lord,' except in the Holy Spirit" (1 Cor 12:3).

Receive the Holy Spirit. Know the heart of Jesus. Share the Good News of Jesus with a world ignorant of Him.

Prayer: Father, may the depths of my relationship with Jesus impel me to share the good news.

Promise: "If there is a peaceable man there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will come back to you." -Lk 10:6

Praise: "I too have carefully traced the whole sequence of events from the beginning, and have decided to set it in writing for you, Theophilus" (Lk 1:3). Thank you, Holy Spirit, for the ministry of St. Luke!

WAIT IN JOYFUL HOPE - One Bread, One Body, 10/17/2019

Thursday, October 17, 2019, St. Ignatius of Antioch

Romans 3:21-30, Psalm 130:1-6, Luke 11:47-54
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/101719.cfm

WAIT IN JOYFUL HOPE

"My soul trusts in His word. My soul waits for the Lord." -Psalm 130:5-6

When I was younger, waiting used to be for me like chalk squeaking on a chalkboard. My prayer often went like this: "Lord, I want this so bad, this conversion, this vocation. It's not a selfish thing I'm waiting for; You Yourself have put it on my heart, Lord. Hope deferred is making my heart sick (Prv 13:12), and still it hasn't happened..." Gradually, I Iearned that waiting for the Lord, if done in a spirit of "waiting with" the Lord, grows into a time of daily trust in Him, for His ways are high above my ways (Is 55:8-9). "My soul trusts in His word" (Ps 130:5).

The Israelites waited forty years in the desert. During that waiting, they were transformed from a rebellious people into His trusting people, ready to inherit what God had promised. The waiting itself became their heritage. So it is to be with us disciples of Jesus. Just to be with Him, to wait "with Him," is enough, regardless of the outcome of the situation for which we pray. To wait one hour with Jesus, as at Gethsemane (Mt 26:40), becomes our heart's desire. Eventually, the "waiting for" becomes a "waiting on," a desire to console His heart. Being with Jesus transforms our heart from desiring what we want to desiring what He wants. Somehow, it dawns on us that He has been handling the situation our heart desired all along.

"Wait for the Lord with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord" (Ps 27:14). Wait in joyful hope, for the waiting is your heritage and your privilege.

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, I will wait in joyful hope for the coming of Your kingdom.

Promise: "Through His blood, God made [Jesus] the means of expiation for all who believe." -Rm 3:25

Praise: Emperor Trajan forced the Christians in Antioch to choose between death and apostasy. Bishop St. Ignatius would not deny Christ and was condemned to death.

TRUTH AND CONSEQUENCES - One Bread, One Body, 10/16/2019

Wednesday, October 16, 2019, St. Hedwig, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque

Romans 2:1-11, Psalm 62:2-3, 6-7, 9, Luke 11:42-46
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/101619.cfm

TRUTH AND CONSEQUENCES

"Do you suppose...that you will escape [God's] judgment?" -Romans 2:3

If we sin and are too stubborn to repent, we are storing up wrath for Judgment Day (Rm 2:4-6). This wrath includes fury, affliction, and distress (Rm 2:8-9). Yet to those who have repented and totally given their lives to the Lord, to "those who strive for glory, honor, and immortality by patiently doing right" (Rm 2:7), the Lord gives eternal life (Rm 2:7). Eternal life includes "glory, honor, and peace" (Rm 2:10).

Although we are so small in the universe and our time on earth is so short, our lives have astounding and everlasting consequences. Therefore, we must make the most of this moment in eternity by loving the Lord with all our hearts (Lk 10:27) and thereby escaping from the prison of selfishness. "What profit does he show who gains the whole world and destroys himself in the process?" (Lk 9:25)

Let us lose our lives by giving them to Jesus. He will save our lives so that we will not lose them forever (see Lk 9:24). Jesus is our only Hope, but the only Hope we need. Let us accept Jesus as our Lord, Savior, and God on His terms. Let us choose Jesus as our Life (Jn 14:6) and the only Way to eternal life.

Prayer: Jesus, I am all Yours.

Promise: "Do you presume on His kindness and forbearance? Do you not know that God's kindness is an invitation to you to repent?" -Rm 2:4

Praise: St. Margaret Mary yearned to live quietly as a Visitation nun. However, Jesus visited her in numerous private revelations over several years, and encouraged her to promote devotion to His Sacred Heart.

Tuesday, October 15, 2019, St. Teresa of Jesus

Romans 1:16-25, Psalm 19:2-5, Luke 11:37-41
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/101519.cfm

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

"The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against the irreligious and perverse spirit of men who, in this perversity of theirs, hinder the truth." -Romans 1:18

Our society can deteriorate so much that many people "are filled with every kind of wickedness: maliciousness, greed, ill will" (Rm 1:29). We can get to the point that our society is the closest thing to "hell on earth." This extremity of evil is preceded by "disgraceful passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, and the men gave up natural intercourse with women and burned with lust for one another. Men did shameful things with men" (Rm 1:26-27). This barrage of homosexual sin is in turn preceded by idolatry, worshipping "the creature rather than the Creator" (Rm 1:25). When we practice idolatry, that is, put anything ahead of God, we set the stage for worse sin, particularly homosexual sins. Prior to idolatry, vain reasoning, senseless minds, and just plain foolishness proliferate (Rm 1:21-22). Then the bottom line of this retrogression is the repeated refusal to give God glory and thanks (Rm 1:21).

Using this analysis of cultural breakdown from the first chapter of Romans, we can surmise that although our culture of death is in the latter stages of evil, it can get worse. We can also see how serious homosexual sins are. Furthermore, we can understand where idolatry comes from and where it goes. Finally, we can also see that the beginning of renewing society is to live lives of praise and thanks to God. Learn from Romans.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to give me the power to replace the culture of death with a civilization of love and life.

Promise: "But if you give what you have as alms, all will be wiped clean for you." -Lk 11:41

Praise: St. Teresa of Jesus chose religious life because she knew how prone to sin she was. She prayed daily for the coming of the Holy Spirit in her life.
