THE JOYS AND MYSTERY OF HUMILITY

"My son, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved." -Sirach 3:17

Decide to "conduct your affairs with humility." Decide to clothe your whole life from top to bottom in humility (see 1 Pt 5:5). Then "you will be loved more than a giver of gifts" (Sir 3:17). God will give kindness, favor, and grace to you (Sir 3:18). In addition to being loved and graced, your humility will keep you from repeatedly embarrassing yourself, for the proud often make fools of themselves (see Lk 14:9). In the early stages of humility, we receive many wonderful benefits.

As we grow in humility by repeatedly seeking the lowest place (see Lk 14:10) in life, lifestyle, conversation, relationships, employment, etc., we lose some of the fringe benefits of humility. Like Jesus, we are no longer loved in our humility but hated. In humility, we are embarrassed even to death on the cross (see Phil 2:8). Like Jesus, we even feel that we have lost God's grace (see Mt 27:46).

By God's grace and by faith, grow from the blessings of humility into the terrifying mystery of humility.

Prayer: Jesus, gentle and humble of heart, make my heart like Yours (Mt 11:29).

Promise: "For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled and he who humbles himself shall be exalted." -Lk 14:11

Praise: Jesus was glorified after suffering and so shall we be. Praise You, risen Lord Jesus. You are the perfect Teacher and humble Example for each of us. All glory be to You forever.

(Grow in humility by reading the Bible each day. A CD series that may help you is "An Introduction to each Book of the Bible". Order, listen to, or download the thirty-two CDs beginning with CD 21-1, "Matthew and Mark" or DVDs 21 through 37 on our website.)

THE PRIORITY OF BAPTISMAL BROTHERHOOD AND SISTERHOOD - One Bread, One Body, 8/31/2019

1 Thessalonians 4:9-11, Psalm 98:1, 7-9, Matthew 25:14-30

THE PRIORITY OF BAPTISMAL BROTHERHOOD AND SISTERHOOD

"As regards brotherly love, there is no need for me to write you. God Himself has taught you to love one another, and this you are doing with respect to all the brothers." -1 Thessalonians 4:9-10

When most people think of love, they think of loving their spouses, children, neighbors, friends, or even their enemies. However, Jesus, Who became incarnate and made Himself our Brother (see Heb 2:11), puts a great emphasis on loving our brothers and sisters in Christ. In fact, God Himself taught the Thessalonian Christians to love their brothers and sisters in Christ (1 Thes 4:9). The Lord continues to teach us brotherly and sisterly love. Moreover, Jesus has such high standards for loving our Christian brothers and sisters that He:

* insists we make "even greater progress" in brotherly and sisterly love (1 Thes 4:10),
* will judge us on Judgment Day on how we have served our needy brothers and sisters (Mt 25:40), and
* even commands us to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters in Christ (1 Jn 3:16).

"One who has no love for the brother he has seen cannot love the God he has not seen. The commandment we have from Him is this: whoever loves God must also love his brother" (1 Jn 4:20-21). Therefore, love your brothers and sisters in Christ. Form small Christian communities to live to the maximum our baptismal brotherhood and sisterhood.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach me about the priority of brotherly and sisterly love.

Promise: "Well done! You are an industrious and reliable servant. Since you were dependable in a small matter, I will put you in charge of larger affairs." -Mt 25:21

Praise: Joan celebrates her own Baptismal anniversary and those of others.

COULD YOU BE MORE READY? - One Bread, One Body, 8/30/2019

Friday, August 30, 2019

1 Thessalonians 4:1-8, Psalm 97:1-2, 5-6, 10-12, Matthew 25:1-13

COULD YOU BE MORE READY?

"The reign of God can be likened to ten bridesmaids who took their torches and went out to welcome the groom." -Matthew 25:1

The five foolish virgins may not have been any more foolish than most people. They had enough oil in their torches if the bridegroom came at the time expected. Even the wise virgins thought that if the groom came very late, the foolish virgins might have time to go and buy some more oil (Mt 25:9). Furthermore, the foolish virgins presumed the bridegroom would let them in late if they did not get back in time (Mt 25:11).

The five foolish virgins made three tragically erroneous assumptions. The first was that they thought they were sufficiently ready. Do you think you are ready enough for Christ's final coming or your death? If you could be more ready, should you be more ready? The second was that the five foolish virgins thought they could get ready at the last minute. This will not be possible at Jesus' coming or in the case of our sudden death. The last was that they thought the bridegroom might say to them: "Better late than never." In fact, he said: "If you're late, then never will you enter." Some people think no one goes to hell. If they are wrong, they will in the end be very wrong and much too late to change.

Are you as ready as you can be? Are you ready for Jesus' return, your death, and abundant life today? Are you wise enough?

Prayer: Father, I want to be as ready as possible.

Promise: "Whoever rejects these instructions rejects, not man, but God Who sends His Holy Spirit upon you." -1 Thes 4:8

Praise: Frequent and soul-searching Confession prepares Thomas for whatever may come.

MISSIONS AND YOU - One Bread, One Body, 8/29/2019

Thursday, August 29, 2019, Beheading of St. John the Baptizer

1 Thessalonians 3:7-13, Psalm 90:3-5, 12-14, 17, Matthew 24:42-51 or Mark 6:17-29

MISSIONS AND YOU

"We shall continue to flourish only if you stand firm in the Lord!" -1 Thessalonians 3:8

Do you ever look at the massive culture of death and feel that your prayers don't have much of an impact? Do you ever feel that your parish or diocese wouldn't miss you if you weren't there?

St. Paul would argue that your faithfulness has a tremendous impact on the Church. He told the newly converted Thessalonian Christians that his missionary team could only keep flourishing if they stayed firm in the faith! (1 Thes 3:8) Elsewhere Paul said: "Who is weak that I am not affected by it?" (2 Cor 11:29) Once Paul had an open door to preach the Gospel in Troas (2 Cor 2:12), but was in such a state of anxiety about whether or not the Christians in Corinth would stay firm in their faith that he was unable to minister there (2 Cor 2:13). When Paul learned from Titus that the Corinthians had indeed stayed firm in the faith, he was consoled and resumed his mission (2 Cor 7:6ff).

We are intimately interconnected in the Body of Christ. We are "living stones" (1 Pt 2:5) built into the Church. When we don't "stand firm" (1 Thes 3:8), others in the Church are impacted. We may seem to be a stone that no one notices, but if we aren't firm, we weaken other living stones. When we stand firm, we strengthen other Christians. This is why St. Therese of Lisieux is a patroness of missions even though she never left her convent. Therefore, "put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm" (Eph 6:11).

Prayer: Father, may I never give in to discouragement (2 Cor 4:1).

Promise: "Happy that servant whom his Master discovers at work on His return!" -Mt 24:46

Praise: St. John the Baptizer was martyred for speaking God's truth about adultery.

SETTING NEW RECORDS FOR EVIL - One Bread, One Body, 8/28/2019

Wednesday, August 28, 2019, St. Augustine

1 Thessalonians 2:9-13, Psalm 139:7-12, Matthew 23:27-32
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082819.cfm

SETTING NEW RECORDS FOR EVIL

"You say, 'Had we lived in our forefathers' time we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets' blood.' " -Matthew 23:30

The "religious" people of Jesus' time insisted that they would not have committed the sins of their ancestors. We likewise don't believe we would ever again perpetrate the racism and slavery of our forefathers. We can't imagine ourselves staffing concentration camps and bombing civilian populations. We think we would never treat women like animals.

Jesus told the people of His time that they were in what psychologists call "denial." Jesus says the same thing to us. We would commit and are committing some of the worst sins of our ancestors. In fact, we are surpassing our ancestors in evil. Is racism really a thing of the past? The death toll in concentration camps is miniscule compared to the deaths due to surgical and chemical abortions. Who is more innocent than a pre-born baby? Yet they are so often murdered by chemical warfare. What is pornography? It is nothing less than treating women (as well as men and children) as animals or even objects. Repent!

Prayer: Father, free me from sin. Make me holy no matter what.

Promise: "You are witnesses, as is God Himself, of how upright, just, and irreproachable our conduct was toward you who are believers." -1 Thes 2:10

Praise: St. Augustine's Confessions, the autobiography of his conversion, stands as a preeminent witness to God's grace. Written in the fourth century, it continues to be widely read today. He wrote: "Our hearts are restless, Lord, until they rest in you" (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 30).

HUMILIATION - One Bread, One Body, 8/27/2019

Tuesday, August 27, 2019, St. Monica

1 Thessalonians 2:1-8, Psalm 139:1-6, Matthew 23:23-26
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082719.cfm

HUMILIATION

"Fresh from the humiliation we had suffered at Philippi - about which you know - we drew courage from our God to preach His good tidings to you in the face of great opposition." -1 Thessalonians 2:2

When we've just been humiliated, we tend to focus on ourselves, be unforgiving and resentful, lick our wounds, and/or have a pity party. However, such a time of humiliation can be just the right time to proclaim the Gospel. The humiliation we suffered may have been a defensive maneuver by the devil to try to stop us from receiving an exceptional outpouring of God's grace. When humiliated, we shouldn't draw back but charge forward.

For example, when Paul was humiliated, beaten, dragged from Lystra, and left for dead, he "got up and went back into the town" (Acts 14:19-20). When Paul and Silas were arrested, stripped, flogged, and had their feet chained to a stake, they did not shut up or shut down but prayed and sang to the Lord (Acts 16:19-25). Before long an earthquake rocked the prison, and Paul and Silas converted the jailer and his family to the Lord (Acts 16:33). After Jesus' ultimate humiliation on Calvary, He had the ultimate victory of Resurrection from the dead.

Humiliation isn't always a bad sign. It often precedes the greatest works of God in our lives, if we would only respond to God and not the momentary experience of humiliation.

Prayer: Father, by faith may I let You turn my humiliation to the good (Rm 8:28).

Promise: "First cleanse the inside of the cup so that its outside may be clean." -Mt 23:26

Praise: Though St. Monica's prayers seemed for years to have been in vain, her husband, son and grandson were eventually brought to the Faith.

ENDANGERED SPECIES

"Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, you frauds!" -Matthew 23:13, 15

Jesus called the religious leaders of His day "frauds," "blind guides" (Mt 23:16), and "blind fools" (Mt 23:17), among other things. Jesus did not say these things in sinful anger. He was simply being forthright in correcting the scribes and Pharisees.

Jesus continues to deal forthrightly with religious leaders. He knows they must render an account to Him for the people they are responsible to lead (Heb 13:17). They need our help desperately. We give thanks for our religious leaders. It takes courage to turn their life over to this calling. They are as brave as someone going off to war. God's Word tells us what we should do for our leaders:

* Respect - "Respect those among you whose task it is to exercise authority in the Lord" (1 Thes 5:12).
* Obey - "Obey your leaders and submit to them" (Heb 13:17), as long as they do not command anything contrary to God's law (Acts 4:19), and even when they don't practice what they preach (Mt 23:3).
* Intercede - "I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for all men, especially for kings and those in authority" (1 Tm 2:1-2).
* Love - "Love covers a multitude of sins" (1 Pt 4:8). Loving our leaders includes forgiving them.

Some religious leaders are in imminent danger of eternal damnation. You can help them at this most critical time of their lives.

Prayer: Father, may those who have preached to others not be lost themselves (1 Cor 9:27).

Promise: "The gospel proved not a mere matter of words for you but one of power." -1 Thes 1:5

Praise: Dennis corrects his children as Jesus did - with love.

PM eNewsletter 21st Sunday in ordinary time

August 25th 21st Sunday in ordinary time.

This week, Jesus, Your church heralds another tremendous man of faith.

St. John the Baptist, who without fear, proclaimed what was truth till he was finally beheaded.

Jesus, give us that steadfastness of heart that we will first of all learn the truth as taught by the
catechism of the Catholic church, and then be willingly in love, as we proclaim it to others.

Let us be heralds of Your love and let others see the Christ in us.

Let us stand for Your law of love, and let us be as fearless as St. John was in standing for what was
right.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday "THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD" AND THE LORD OF THE DISCIPLINE
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=8/25/2019

"Someone asked Him, 'Lord, are they few in number who are to be saved?' " -Luke 13:23

To be saved, we must confess with our lips that Jesus is Lord (Rm 10:9). However, we human beings have
trouble saying "Yes" when we mean "Yes" and "No" when we mean "No" (Mt 5:37). We have trouble telling the
truth because we speak from our hearts' abundance (Lk 6:45) and our hearts are twisted and deceitful
(Jer 17:9). We must find a way to straighten out our twisted hearts so we can truly acknowledge Jesus as
Lord.

The Lord has given His beloved sons and daughters the gift of discipline. By God's grace, discipline makes
"straight the paths you walk on" (Heb 12:13). The Lord works through discipline to make straight even our
twisted, deceitful hearts. Therefore, we must "not disdain the discipline of the Lord" (Heb 12:5). At first,
"all discipline seems a cause for grief and not for joy, but later it brings forth the fruit of peace and
justice" (Heb 12:11). By accepting the discipline of discipleship, we can truthfully accept Jesus as our
Lord and our Justice (see 1 Cor 1:30). Thank the Lord for the discipline of our daily crosses (see Lk 9:23),
of our vocations, of our call to almsgiving, prayer, and fasting (see Mt 6:16-18), and for our
responsibility to forgive and love even our enemies (Mt 5:44).

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach me how Your discipline fits into Your plan of salvation.

Promise: "So strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees. Make straight the paths you walk on, that
your halting limbs may not be dislocated but healed." -Heb 12:12-13

Praise: Risen Lord Jesus, You are our Hope and our Salvation. All praise and glory to You.

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

"EFFECTIVE HELP"

The poor expect from us an effective help that takes them out of their misery... In this twenty-first
century that has seen considerable advances in the field of technology, science, communications and
infrastructure, we ought to feel shame for not having achieved the same advances in humanity and solidarity,
and so satisfy the primary needs of the most disadvantaged.

"WE MUST DO BETTER"

We are all called to go further. We can and we must do better for the helpless. We must move to concrete
action, so that the scourge of hunger disappears completely.

WE CAN DO IT

We do indeed have the adequate means and framework so that beautiful words and good wishes may become an
action plan of substance that leads effectively to the eradication of hunger in our world. To this end we
need joint efforts, upright hearts, and persistent concern to firmly and resolutely make the other's
problems one's own.

"THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD" AND THE LORD OF THE DISCIPLINE - One Bread, One Body, 8/25/2019

Sunday, August 25, 2019, 21st Sunday Ordinary Time

Isaiah 66:18-21, Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13, Psalm 117:1-2, Luke 13:22-30

"THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD" AND THE LORD OF THE DISCIPLINE

"Someone asked Him, 'Lord, are they few in number who are to be saved?' " -Luke 13:23

To be saved, we must confess with our lips that Jesus is Lord (Rm 10:9). However, we human beings have trouble saying "Yes" when we mean "Yes" and "No" when we mean "No" (Mt 5:37). We have trouble telling the truth because we speak from our hearts' abundance (Lk 6:45) and our hearts are twisted and deceitful (Jer 17:9). We must find a way to straighten out our twisted hearts so we can truly acknowledge Jesus as Lord.

The Lord has given His beloved sons and daughters the gift of discipline. By God's grace, discipline makes "straight the paths you walk on" (Heb 12:13). The Lord works through discipline to make straight even our twisted, deceitful hearts. Therefore, we must "not disdain the discipline of the Lord" (Heb 12:5). At first, "all discipline seems a cause for grief and not for joy, but later it brings forth the fruit of peace and justice" (Heb 12:11). By accepting the discipline of discipleship, we can truthfully accept Jesus as our Lord and our Justice (see 1 Cor 1:30). Thank the Lord for the discipline of our daily crosses (see Lk 9:23), of our vocations, of our call to almsgiving, prayer, and fasting (see Mt 6:16-18), and for our responsibility to forgive and love even our enemies (Mt 5:44).

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to teach me how Your discipline fits into Your plan of salvation.

Promise: "So strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees. Make straight the paths you walk on, that your halting limbs may not be dislocated but healed." -Heb 12:12-13

Praise: Risen Lord Jesus, You are our Hope and our Salvation. All praise and glory to You.

DEATH IN THE FAMILY - One Bread, One Body, 8/23/2019

Friday, August 23, 2019, St. Rose of Lima

Ruth 1:1, 3-6, 14-16, 22, Psalm 146:5-10, Matthew 22:34-40

DEATH IN THE FAMILY

"Both Mahlon and Chilion died also, and the woman was left with neither her two sons nor her husband." -Ruth 1:5

All the men in Naomi's family died, her husband and two married sons. Under these circumstances, many would despair and their lives would fall apart. But, by God's power, death in the family can become life-giving and lift the family to new heights of love and grace.

For example, Ruth could rise above her grief at her husband's death to exhibit a faithfulness to her mother-in-law, a prophetic example of our heavenly Father's faithfulness. When Ruth left her homeland with her mother-in-law, she committed social suicide. According to the customs of the time, she threw away her future and condemned herself to abject poverty. However, by a miraculous turn of events, Ruth married Boaz and became the great-grandmother of King David (Ru 4:17).

A mourning and bereft family was used mightily in God's salvation plan. A widow traumatized by the deaths of husband, father-in-law, and brother-in-law gave life and prepared the way for Jesus the Messiah. God turns all things, even death, to the good for those who love Him (Rm 8:28).

Prayer: Father, thank You for Brother Death through which life enters the world. Console and heal the grieving. We trust You.

Promise: " 'You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment." -Mt 22:37-38

Praise: St. Rose was born in Lima, Peru, of Spanish descent. Leading a humble life, she is the first canonized saint of the Americas.

ONE HELL OF A DECISION - One Bread, One Body, 8/22/2019

Thursday, August 22, 2019, Queenship of Mary

Judges 11:29-39, Psalm 40:5, 7-10, Matthew 22:1-14
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/082219.cfm

ONE HELL OF A DECISION

"Bind him hand and foot and throw him out into the night to wail and grind his teeth." -Matthew 22:13

We can hear the word "hell" used frequently in the workplace, on TV and radio, in all types of popular music, at the ball games - everywhere, it seems, except in church, the one place where we most need to be repeatedly taught and warned about the reality of hell, the "state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1033). Not enough people in our society have a healthy fear of ending up in hell. Fewer still seem to have the fear of the Lord, the Judge of all (see Jas 5:9).

If we ignore the reality that we could freely choose eternity in hell over an eternity with Jesus, we ignore the serious effects of sin. This denies the need to be saved from our sins. Thus, we make ourselves a god. We kick God off the judge's bench and sit there ourselves. We judge that we're doing OK, and that our sins are not serious (or they aren't even sins in our eyes). We judge that we'll go to heaven, because we're not in danger of going to hell. We're safe from danger, so we don't need a Savior.

The original sin happened because man succumbed to the temptation to be like God and judge for himself what was good and bad (Gn 3:5). Repent of taking the place of God and judging yourself. Even St. Paul did not dare to judge himself (1 Cor 4:3). Like the tax collector, throw yourself on the mercy of God and pray, "O God, be merciful to me, a sinner" (Lk 18:13).

Don't delay even a moment. Repent now! Confess Jesus as your Lord and Savior (Rm 10:9). Reject sin, Satan, and hell.

Prayer: Father, may everyone who reads this page lead thousands of people to accept Jesus as Lord, Savior, and God.

Promise: "Ears open to obedience You gave me." -Ps 40:7

Praise: Mary became queen-mother, crushing the head of Satan. Mary, Queen of heaven, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

WHAT IS JESUS TEACHING US TODAY?

"...begin with the last group and end with the first..." -Matthew 20:8

Jesus, the "Teacher" (Mt 19:16), is always teaching, always teaching, always teaching. Therefore we, as His disciples, should be always listening for Him, always watching Him, and always docile to His lessons. Jesus describes the master who began paying the late arrivals first. Yet notice that He had gathered all those who had labored that day to watch the distribution of wages. Jesus was giving a lesson to those who had worked all day. His lesson was to display the lavish mercy and generosity of God, and He wanted the early workers to observe His joy in being generous. Since the early workers missed the lesson in the visual demonstration, Jesus had to give them the lesson in words later on.

Focusing only on the rewards of serving God is so limiting. Jesus promised to give His servants a just reward (Mt 20:4). He also gave them a merciful one - far beyond anything they could ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20), life on high with Him (Phil 3:14). One day, one lifetime, in His service is far better than a thousand elsewhere (Ps 84:11).

St. Thomas Aquinas had spent his entire life serving God. Near the end of his life, the Lord appeared to St. Thomas and asked him what reward he wished for his life of service. Thomas replied: "None but Yourself, O Lord!" Let us imitate St. Thomas and fix our eyes on Jesus (Heb 3:1; 12:2), not on the rewards He gives.

Prayer: Father, may I guard against grumbling by spending every day of my life thanking You for Your loving mercy.

Promise: "You have granted him his heart's desire; you refused not the wish of his lips." -Ps 21:3

Praise: Pope St. Pius X was outstanding for his personal holiness and spirit of poverty. He died on the cusp of World War I. His motto was to "renew all things in Christ."

"THE MIND OF CHRIST" (1 COR 2:16)

"Then who can be saved?" -Matthew 19:25

Jesus came that all people might be saved (1 Tm 2:4). His focus was on seeking and saving the lost (Lk 19:10), not satisfying His own needs.

We humans tend to focus on our needs and desires. Therefore, we need a new heart (Ez 36:26) and a new mind to do the work to which God has called us. Jesus gives us a clean, new heart (Ps 51:12) and He shares His mind with us, so we can "have the mind of Christ" (1 Cor 2:16). Then we can focus on God's priorities instead of our own needs.

For example, instead of spending our lives focused on accumulating money, we will focus on accumulating souls for the kingdom of heaven. Instead of spending our lives worrying about paying the bills, we focus on allowing God to provide for our genuine needs while we are occupied with doing His will and leading people into a new life in Christ.

God knows everything we need before we ask Him (Mt 6:32). He is not stingy, but exceedingly generous. He is just, and though He demands that we bear fruit for His kingdom, He will not fail to provide for and bless those who spend their lives working for His sake (see Heb 6:10). Therefore, set your mind on heaven, and the Lord of heaven. Focus not on your needs, but on His desires. He wants His house to be full (Lk 14:23). Give Him the present He desires, a rich harvest of souls.

Prayer: Father, may my life testify to the world that I firmly believe that all things are possible with You (Mt 19:26).

Promise: "The Lord is with you, O champion!" -Jgs 6:12

Praise: St. Bernard of Clairvaux's achievements are too numerous to list. In the Latin West, he was truly the "Man of the Twelfth Century".

SLIDE RULE

"They became defiled by their works, and wanton in their crimes." -Psalm 106:39

"The Israelites offended the Lord" (Jgs 2:11). They persisted in sin and eventually began to receive the wages of sin (Rm 6:23). The Lord "allowed them to fall into the power of their enemies round about whom they were no longer able to withstand. Whatever they undertook, the Lord turned into disaster for them" (Jgs 2:14-15). In their affliction, the people cried out to the Lord, and He took pity on them by sending the "judges" to lead them to repentance. However, the people did not completely repent. "When the judge died, they would relapse and do worse than their fathers" (Jgs 2:19). Eventually, the nation even became so perverted as to sacrifice their sons and daughters to demons (Ps 106:37).

The moral standards of our society and even of some members of our Church have likewise deteriorated. We have sinned, repented, sinned, and repented, but we have done more sinning than repenting. We have sinned seriously, and then more seriously, while repenting superficially. This has resulted in an ever greater accommodation with evil. We must repent with a sincerity that we may have never before experienced. We should desire to go to Confession at least monthly and ask the Holy Spirit to convict us of our sins (see Jn 16:8). Otherwise, today's perversions will be tomorrow's ordinary events. Repent as never before.

Prayer: Father, I repent of not resisting sin to the point of allowing my blood to be shed (Heb 12:4).

Promise: "Jesus told him, 'If you seek perfection, go, sell your possessions, and give to the poor. You will then have treasure in heaven. Afterward, come back and follow Me.' " -Mt 19:21

Praise: St. John Eudes chose to save both priests and laity through the devotion to the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart.

PM eNewsletter 20th Sunday in ordinary time

August 18th 20th Sunday in ordinary time.

This week, Jesus, Your church celebrates the queenship of Mary, as she so rightly deserves.

She was a faithful servant, and a tremendous example of trust while on earth, and so she should be honored
as Queen of heaven and earth.

Let her intercession continue to cause grace to flow to all of us.

Let Your love for mom flow also into us, and let us praise, and glorify You as our Lord, God and King.

Let us see that Your plan of love is constantly working out in everything, and give us the graces necessary
for us to really trust You every day in every way.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday TRUTH SOMETIMES HURTS
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=8/18/2019

Jeremiah " 'ought to be put to death,' the princes said to the king; 'he demoralizes the soldiers who are
left in this city, and all the people, by speaking such things to them.' " -Jeremiah 38:4

The Lord commands us to speak the truth in love (Eph 4:15). If we fail to try to dissuade others from their
wicked conduct, God holds us responsible for their deaths (Ez 3:18). We must be men and women of the truth.

However, in a world of lies, the truth and those who speak it are rejected. For example, Jeremiah spoke the
truth and was thrown into a muddy cistern where he was left to starve (Jer 38:6, 9). Often when we speak
the truth, our families will reject us. "A household of five will be divided three against two and two
against three" (Lk 12:52). Therefore, we naturally don't want to speak the truth, although the Lord holds
us responsible to do so.

The only Way out of this dilemma is Jesus, Who is not only truthful but the Truth Himself (Jn 14:6). He is
the Truth Who sets us free (Jn 8:32). In Jesus, in the Truth, we will speak and live the truth, no matter
if we have to die for the truth (see Sir 4:28). Our love for Jesus will make us true. Because God is Love
(1 Jn 4:16), we have the courage to live for God, the Truth. Speak and do the truth in love (Eph 4:15).

Prayer: Father, in the name of Jesus, I receive the Spirit of Truth (see Jn 14:17).

Promise: "For the sake of the joy which lay before Him He endured the cross, heedless of its shame. He has
taken His seat at the right of the throne of God. Remember how He endured the opposition of sinners; hence
do not grow despondent or abandon the struggle. In your fight against sin you have not yet resisted to the
point of shedding blood." -Heb 12:2-4

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, our Redeemer! You atoned for our sins and paid our infinite debt of sin.
Glory to You forever.

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

DON'T BE INDIFFERENT

... These are some reflections I wish to share with those men and women who do not allow themselves to
succumb to indifference; who hear the cry of those who do not have the minimum needed to lead a
dignified life.

THE CHURCH AND THE POOR

For her part, the Catholic Church, in the exercise of the mission with which her divine Founder has
entrusted her, struggles daily throughout the world against hunger and malnutrition in multiple ways
and through her various structures and associations, remembering that those who suffer from misery are
not different from us. They share our flesh and blood. They deserve ... a friendly hand to help and
support them, in such a way that no one is left behind, so that in our world fraternal solidarity may
boast its own identity card and citizenship, beyond any flashy slogans void of substance.

"HOPES OF MILLIONS"

The annual celebration of World Food Day emphasizes ... the needs, yearnings and hopes of millions of
persons who lack bread each day. Increasingly, there are more people who sadly make up part of that
great number of human beings who have nothing, or almost nothing to eat. It should be the opposite and
yet recent statistics are a painful proof of how international solidarity appears to be cooling.

TRUTH SOMETIMES HURTS - One Bread, One Body, 8/18/2019

Sunday, August 18, 2019, 20th Sunday Ordinary Time

Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10, Hebrews 12:1-4, Psalm 40:2-4, 18, Luke 12:49-53
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/081819.cfm

TRUTH SOMETIMES HURTS

Jeremiah " 'ought to be put to death,' the princes said to the king; 'he demoralizes the soldiers who are left in this city, and all the people, by speaking such things to them.' " -Jeremiah 38:4

The Lord commands us to speak the truth in love (Eph 4:15). If we fail to try to dissuade others from their wicked conduct, God holds us responsible for their deaths (Ez 3:18). We must be men and women of the truth.

However, in a world of lies, the truth and those who speak it are rejected. For example, Jeremiah spoke the truth and was thrown into a muddy cistern where he was left to starve (Jer 38:6, 9). Often when we speak the truth, our families will reject us. "A household of five will be divided three against two and two against three" (Lk 12:52). Therefore, we naturally don't want to speak the truth, although the Lord holds us responsible to do so.

The only Way out of this dilemma is Jesus, Who is not only truthful but the Truth Himself (Jn 14:6). He is the Truth Who sets us free (Jn 8:32). In Jesus, in the Truth, we will speak and live the truth, no matter if we have to die for the truth (see Sir 4:28). Our love for Jesus will make us true. Because God is Love (1 Jn 4:16), we have the courage to live for God, the Truth. Speak and do the truth in love (Eph 4:15).

Prayer: Father, in the name of Jesus, I receive the Spirit of Truth (see Jn 14:17).

Promise: "For the sake of the joy which lay before Him He endured the cross, heedless of its shame. He has taken His seat at the right of the throne of God. Remember how He endured the opposition of sinners; hence do not grow despondent or abandon the struggle. In your fight against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood." -Heb 12:2-4

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus, our Redeemer! You atoned for our sins and paid our infinite debt of sin. Glory to You forever.

FAMILY MAN - One Bread, One Body, 8/17/2019

Saturday, August 17, 2019

Joshua 24:14-29, Psalm 16:1-2, 5, 7-8, 11, Matthew 19:13-15

FAMILY MAN

"As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." -Joshua 24:15

Is your family so united that the father can speak for the whole family, as Joshua did? Are you of "one heart and one mind," at least with your spouse? (Acts 4:32) Do your children share your faith in the Lord? Is your family united, or is it several independent, isolated individuals? The Lord is working at this moment to unite your family around Himself as the Center.

As each member of your family draws closer to Jesus, you will become closer to each other. The way to family unity is total commitment to Jesus. When even one family member seeks first God's kingdom, family life begins to fall into place (Mt 6:33). Turn your life and your family over to Jesus. He alone is the Savior. He alone can save the family.

Even if you feel it's too late for your family, don't believe what you see, but walk by faith (2 Cor 5:7). The Lord promises: "Those who oppose you I will oppose, and your sons" and daughters and spouses "I will save" (see Is 49:25 NAB). Jesus is Savior of you and your family. "That is why I kneel before the Father from Whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name; and I pray that He will bestow on you gifts in keeping with the riches of His glory. May He strengthen you inwardly through the working of His Spirit. May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith" (Eph 3:14-17). The family that prays together in Jesus' name stays together in unity.

Prayer: Jesus, do anything with my family You want, even things I don't understand.

Promise: "Children were brought to Him so that He could place His hands on them in prayer." -Mt 19:13

Praise: When James entered the Church as a new Catholic, so too did his wife and children.

A LIFE WITHOUT SEX - One Bread, One Body, 8/16/2019

Friday, August 16, 2019, St. Stephen of Hungary

Joshua 24:1-13, Psalm 136:1-3, 16-18, 21-22, 24, Matthew 19:3-12
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/081619.cfm

A LIFE WITHOUT SEX

"Some men are incapable of sexual activity from birth; some have been deliberately made so; and some there are who have freely renounced sex for the sake of God's reign. Let him accept this teaching who can." -Matthew 19:12

In a world which worships sex as a false god, it is almost impossible for some to comprehend that there are people called to renounce sex for the sake of God's kingdom. Because it is so difficult for our world to understand, the witness of the single life for the Lord is powerful indeed. The single life does not deny the value of marriage, but challenges us to set our hearts "on what pertains to higher realms where Christ is seated at God's right hand" (Col 3:1).

The single life for the Lord calls us to fix our eyes on heaven where there is no marriage (Lk 20:34-35). We see our earthly existence as a stepping stone into eternity. "I am going into this with you for your own good. I have no desire to place restrictions on you, but I do want to promote what is good, what will help you to devote yourselves entirely to the Lord" (1 Cor 7:35). The single life is a promise of glory that "eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love Him" (1 Cor 2:9). The single life is among the most powerful prophecies proclaimed on the earth. It comforts the afflicted and afflicts the comfortable.

Some of you reading this are called to be single for the Lord. Accept this call.

Prayer: Father, I pray for many to accept the call to be celibate for Your kingdom.

Promise: "I gave you a land which you had not tilled and cities which you had not built, to dwell in; you have eaten of vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant." -Jos 24:13

Praise: St. Stephen was King of Hungary and invited the Benedictines to evangelize the country. His son Emeric is also a canonized saint.

FROM VICTIM TO VICTOR

"God Who is mighty has done great things for me, holy is His name." -Luke 1:49

In much of the Western world, this date is associated with victory, the end of World War II. In Catholic liturgical tradition, today's celebration of Mary being taken to heaven is associated with the ultimate victory: Jesus' victory over death and our victory over death through faith in Jesus. United with Jesus, the Church is "a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars" (Rv 12:1). In Jesus, the Church has total victory over Satan, the "huge dragon" (Rv 12:3); Mary and all those living their Baptisms share in this victory. Today's celebration of Mary's assumption into heaven proclaims the total victory of Jesus. "He has shown might with His arm; He has confused the proud in their inmost thoughts. He has deposed the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly to high places" (Lk 1:51-52).

Today, on this holy day, the Lord wants to transform you from victim to victor. Today, you can be free from the sins, bitterness, resentments, unforgiveness, self-hatred, and compulsions which have victimized you. Today, in Jesus, you can win victories you had never thought you would win. Mary, assumed into heaven, pray for us.

Prayer: Father, make me the conqueror of the world (1 Jn 5:5).

Promise: "Christ must reign until God has put all enemies under His feet." -1 Cor 15:25

Praise: Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption as a dogma of the Catholic Church in 1950. Mary's Assumption into heaven, body and soul, foreshadows the resurrection of our own bodies.
