THE PATH OF HOLINESS

"Who can ascend the mountain of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place?" -Psalm 24:3

When we are baptized, we become saints, that is, we become holy. We receive a new nature (see Gal 6:15) and become sharers in the divine nature (2 Pt 1:4). In Baptism, we begin the process of becoming holy, that is, of being like God (1 Jn 3:2). To grow in holiness, we should renew our Baptisms daily and continue to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior (see 2 Pt 2:20). Our lives will be a "great period of trial" (Rv 7:14). By turning to the Lord in these trials, we will grow in holiness and in the desire to be holy.

On the path of holiness, we will imitate Jesus more closely. We will be pure as He is pure (1 Jn 3:3). By His grace, we will become holy in every aspect of our conduct "after the likeness of the Holy One Who called" us (1 Pt 1:15). As we grow holier, we will live the Beatitudes and even become worthy of being persecuted for the sake of the gospel (Mt 5:11). Finally, we will either die a holy death and see the all-holy God immediately and forever, or we will see Him after becoming purified and more holy in Purgatory.

The purpose of our lives is to become holy. We are naturally afraid of the adventure of becoming holy. However, the Lord will give us His grace to want to be holy more than we want anything else in life.

Prayer: Father, may I desire to be holy more than to breathe.

Promise: "See what love the Father has bestowed on us in letting us be called children of God! Yet that is what we are. The reason the world does not recognize us is that it never recognized the Son." -1 Jn 3:1

Praise: "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God almighty, He Who was, and Who is, and Who is to come!" (Rv 4:8)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Rescript: In accord with the "Code of Canon Law", I hereby grant the "Nihil Obstat" ("Permission to Publish") for "One Bread, One Body" covering the period from October 1, 2018 through November 30, 2018

THE SPIRIT OF SUBMISSION - One Bread, One Body, 10/31/2018

Wednesday, October 31, 2018

Ephesians 6:1-9, Psalm 145:10-14, Luke 13:22-30
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/103118.cfm

THE SPIRIT OF SUBMISSION

"Slaves, obey your human masters with the reverence, the awe, and the sincerity you owe to Christ." -Ephesians 6:5

Everyone should submit to each other (Eph 5:21). Wives should submit to husbands (Eph 5:22), children to parents (Eph 6:1), and employees to employers (Eph 6:5). Those in authority should submit to the Lord (see Eph 6:4, 9). The Lord wants to create an entire culture of submission.

If we accept God's call to be submissive in circumstance after circumstance, we will open ourselves to being filled with the Spirit. The beginning of this teaching on submission in Ephesians is verse 5:21. Although this verse looks like a sentence in some translations, it is a participial phrase in the original. Verse 21 is subordinated to the main verb in the sentence, which is "be filled" (with the Holy Spirit) in 5:18. In the original Greek, the Lord is saying that we must live lives of submission if we are to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Mary received the Holy Spirit after calling herself God's handmaid (Lk 1:38). Those who received the Spirit at the first Christian Pentecost humbled themselves in asking: "What are we to do?" (Acts 2:37) Twelve Ephesian men received the Spirit after they humbly admitted that they had never heard of the Spirit (Acts 19:2). Cornelius and his household received the Spirit after Cornelius prostrated himself in submission to Peter (Acts 10:25). The Spirit descended on Jesus when He submitted Himself to John's baptism (Mt 3:14-15). Life in submission leads to life in the Spirit.

Prayer: Father, I love You by submitting myself to those whom You have given authority over me.

Promise: "Try to come in through the narrow door." -Lk 13:24

Praise: Jeff took two years off from the workforce to care full-time for his dying mother. After her death, God blessed him with a better job than his previous one.

MEN OF LOVE - One Bread, One Body, 10/30/2018

Tuesday, October 30, 2018

Ephesians 5:21-33, Psalm 128:1-5, Luke 13:18-21
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/103018.cfm

MEN OF LOVE

"Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the Church. He gave Himself up for her." -Ephesians 5:25

Our modern culture chokes on the opening of today's first reading, "Wives should be submissive to their husbands" (Eph 5:22). Yet that is not the most radical sentence of this passage. St. Paul's call for husbands to love their wives, in the same way as Jesus loves the Church, is an extraordinarily radical challenge, both for the culture of Paul's time, and for every age since.

In Paul's time, wives were considered the property of the husband and had no rights at all. Yet Paul commanded husbands to lay down their lives for their wives, to care for them as they cared for their own body (Eph 5:28-29). This is a radical demand. How does Jesus love the Church? He says to the Church: "This is My body, to be given up for you" (see 1 Cor 11:24). To love his wife in this way means that the husband says to his wife: "This is my body, to be given up for you."

Jesus asks in today's Gospel passage: "What is the kingdom of God like?" (see Lk 13:18) The kingdom of God is like the radical love of a husband who loves his wife as Jesus loves the Church. He literally lays down his life for her - his interests, schedule, hopes, dreams - for her welfare. He walks to the cross for her. He honors, nourishes, and provides for her. He uplifts her, as Jesus does for His Church. He spiritually leads her, teaches her, and loves her. He leads and teaches the children they bring into the world.

Yes, the world will notice a husband who loves his wife like this. The people in the world, seeing this married love, will realize that Jesus loves them (Eph 5:32).

Prayer: Father, raise up husbands and wives who will lead the way in evangelization through love, hospitality, and making and raising disciples for You (Mt 28:19-20).

Promise: "Happy are you who fear the Lord." -Ps 128:1

Praise: Thomas and Ann renew their marriage vows yearly.

DIRTY JOKES - One Bread, One Body, 10/29/2018

Monday, October 29, 2018

Ephesians 4:32-5:8, Psalm 1:1-4, 6, Luke 13:10-17

DIRTY JOKES

"As for lewd conduct or promiscuousness or lust of any sort, let them not even be mentioned among you; your holiness forbids this." -Ephesians 5:3

As long as they don't commit adultery or fornication, many people feel they have done all right. Yet the Bible tells us to be pure as Jesus is pure (1 Jn 3:3), not even to look lustfully (Mt 5:28) or mention sexual impurity. So much for dirty jokes and the vast majority of TV programs and commercials.

The Lord considers our bodies temples of the Holy Spirit. He's the Owner of our bodies, including our sexuality, because He paid for them with His blood (1 Cor 6:19-20). However, He generally does not exercise His right of ownership over our bodies. Rather, He calls us to freely offer our bodies to Him as living sacrifices (Rm 12:1). Jesus wants your body and calls you to purity. He loves your body so much He will raise it from the dead, glorify it, and take it to heaven to be in touch with His Body forever.

Our bodies can be clean and fly away, or they can be dirty and earthbound. Let Jesus love your body. Give your body and sexuality to Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, I repent of sexual sins. Take away the guilt. May I be pure and feel clean.

Promise: "Should not this daughter of Abraham here who has been in the bondage of Satan for eighteen years have been released from her shackles on the sabbath?" -Lk 13:16

Praise: Peter asked the permission of the father of the girl he was interested in dating before asking her.

PM eNewsletter 30th Sunday in ordinary time

October 28th 30th Sunday in ordinary time.

Jesus, it is good for us to pray for all those who have died and gone before us.

Give us the inspiration to pray especially for those in purgatory who have no one to pray for them.

Let us be aware that those in purgatory depend on us to get them into the glory of heaven through
our prayers, masses, and the charitable acts that we do for there release.

Jesus, continue to grace us to understand that our brothers and sisters who have gone before us
have changed into eternal beings that are now in the communion of saints forever and ever.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday AN EYE-OPENING NOVENA
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=10/28/2018

" 'Rabboni,' the blind man said, 'I want to see.' Jesus said in reply, 'Be on your way! Your faith has
healed you.' Immediately he received his sight and started to follow Him up the road." -Mark 10:51-52

To live God's Word (see Jas 1:22), we must pray God's Word. I invite you to pray a novena to be free
from spiritual blindness. For nine days, pray: "I want to see" (Mk 10:51).

Most Christians believe that other people, including their spouses, family members, neighbors, and
fellow workers, need to see much better spiritually. The sin, injustice, abortion, racism, and
oppression in our culture of death prove that we live in an epidemic of spiritual blindness.
Nevertheless, we find it difficult to believe that we are spiritually blind or even that we have planks
in our eyes while others may have only specks in theirs (Mt 7:5). We are tempted to react like the
Pharisees when they said to Jesus: "You are not calling us blind, are You?" (Jn 9:40)

You may be so holy that you are not spiritually blind. Yet are you certain that you have 20/20 vision
spiritually? If you're blind to being blind, you are trapped. If you're not sure you have 20/20
spiritual vision, pray the novena to be freed from spiritual blindness. Try to go to Mass daily or as
often as possible. Go to Confession. Pray daily: "I want to see." Invite others to join you. Write and
tell us the good news.

Prayer: Father, in this novena teach me about myself.

Promise: "I will gather them from the ends of the world, with the blind and the lame in their midst."
-Jer 31:8

Praise: Praise the risen Lord, for "by His stripes we were healed" (Is 53:5; 1 Pt 2:24).

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

WATER AND CARE OF CREATION

JESUS THIRSTS

The Lord continues to ask that His thirst be quenched; He thirsts for love. He asks us to give Him
to drink in all those who thirst in our own day... To give to drink in the global village, does not
only entail personal gestures of charity, but also concrete choices and a constant commitment to
ensure to all the primary good of water.

LITTERED SEAS

We cannot allow our seas and oceans to be littered by endless fields of floating plastic... Our
active commitment is needed to confront this emergency. We need to pray as if everything depended
on God's providence, and work as if everything depended on us.

PRAYERFUL HOPE

It is my prayerful hope that Christian communities may contribute more and more concretely helping
everyone to enjoy this indispensable resource, in respectful care for the gifts received from the
Creator, and in particular rivers, seas and oceans.

CHILDREN NO MORE - One Bread, One Body, 10/27/2018

Saturday, October 27, 2018

Ephesians 4:7-16, Psalm 122:1-5, Luke 13:1-9

CHILDREN NO MORE

"Be children no longer." -Ephesians 4:14

We Christians are called to be child-like, not childish (1 Cor 14:20). Being childish means being "tossed here and there, carried about by every wind of doctrine that originates in human trickery and skill in proposing error" (Eph 4:14). It means being manipulated and enslaved.

The way to freedom from childishness is to profess the truth in love (Eph 4:15). The truth will set us free (Jn 8:32) and have us "grow to the full maturity of Christ the Head" (Eph 4:15).

We grow up and grow out of childishness by obeying apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastor-teachers who will equip us for the work of service to build up the body of Christ (Eph 4:11-12). Thus, the truth that sets us free from childishness is not just general spiritual information; it is the truth that prepares us for full-time service to Christ and His body. This is the call of all baptized people.

Furthermore, the truth that frees and equips us for service is based on the Bible. "All Scripture is inspired of God and is useful for teaching - for reproof, correction, and training in holiness so that the man of God may be fully competent and equipped for every good work" (2 Tm 3:16-17).

Therefore, study and know God's Word in the Scriptures to prepare for God's service, or else live the enslaved, confused life of a child. Grow up or be manipulated. It's the Bible and God's service, or confusion and darkness. "Let us, then, be children no longer" (Eph 4:14).

Prayer: Father, may I give You reason to rejoice in my growth. May I be "fully mature and lacking in nothing" (Jas 1:4).

Promise: "Through [Jesus] the whole body grows, and with the proper functioning of the members joined firmly together by each supporting ligament, builds itself up in love." -Eph 4:16

Praise: Ben has run his small business for the Lord for over fifteen years, prayerfully trusting in God to supply his needs.

THE SEVENFOLD UNITY - One Bread, One Body, 10/26/2018

Friday, October 26, 2018

Ephesians 4:1-6, Psalm 24:1-6, Luke 12:54-59

THE SEVENFOLD UNITY

"Make every effort to preserve the unity." -Ephesians 4:3

From prison, Paul pleaded with his Christian brothers and sisters to "live a life worthy" of their calling (Eph 4:1). This meant being humble, meek, long-suffering, and lovingly forebearing (Eph 4:2). This radically different way of life was necessary to preserve and deepen the early Church's unity in the Spirit (Eph 4:3). One very high priority was unity in the body, the Spirit, and in hope, unity in the Lord, faith, and Baptism, and in the God and Father of all (Eph 4:4-6). This sevenfold unity is necessary for our lives to be worthy of our calling by the Lord.

Jesus is continuing to pray that we be one as He and the Father are one (Jn 17:21). Despite hundreds of years of disunity among the various Christian denominations, despite millions of divorces, despite an all too frequent disregard for a practical living out of our baptismal brotherhood and sisterhood, despite the utter divisiveness and disunity of sin, the Lord will never change (see Mal 3:6; Heb 13:8). He wants us to be in unity with Him and with each other. We must be united even if we have to die for it, because He already has died for it (Jn 11:51-52).

Repent! Live a worthy, humble life of unity.

Prayer: Father, unite the Catholics and the Eastern Orthodox in the next decade.

Promise: "There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, Who is over all, and works through all, and is in all." -Eph 4:5-6

Praise: After a trial separation, Richard and Linda reunited in a much better and more prayer-filled marriage.

THE POWER UNKNOWN - One Bread, One Body, 10/25/2018

Thursday, October 25, 2018

THE POWER UNKNOWN

"May He strengthen you inwardly through the working of His Spirit." -Ephesians 3:16

When the Holy Spirit came to us in Baptism, Confirmation, and other occasions, we received power (Acts 1:8). In fact, we were clothed from head to toe with power from on high (Lk 24:49). We can move mountains with only a tiny use of our power (Mt 17:20). There is nothing impossible for us in the power of Jesus (Mt 17:20).

A problem for Christians is not that we need more power but that we need to open the eyes of our hearts to know "the immeasurable scope of His power in us who believe" (Eph 1:19) and use it.

The Holy Spirit, Who has given us a share in His power, will also open our eyes to this power. Therefore, renew your Baptism and Confirmation. Repent of quenching the Holy Spirit (1 Thes 5:19). Stir into flame the gift of the Holy Spirit (2 Tm 1:6-7). Praise "to Him Whose power now at work in us can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine" (Eph 3:20). Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, may I use the power You have given me to save lives, evangelize, restore families, and build a new civilization of love and life.

Promise: "Thus you will be able to grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ's love." -Eph 3:18

Praise: After ten days of waiting for work for his newly formed business, John made a nine-hour novena to Jesus under the title of "The Infant of Prague." The next day, calls came in for as much work as he could handle.

"TOO MUCH?" (MK 6:3) - One Bread, One Body, 10/24/2018

Wednesday, October 24, 2018, St. Anthony Mary Claret

Ephesians 3:2-12, Isaiah 12:2-6, Luke 12:39-48
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/102418.cfm

"TOO MUCH?" (MK 6:3)

"When much has been given a man, much will be required of him. More will be asked of a man to whom more has been entrusted." -Luke 12:48

Jesus makes it very clear in today's Gospel reading that He expects His disciples to continue to bear ever-increasing fruit. "This sort of talk is hard to endure!" (Jn 6:60) Do we, as His disciples, find this divine expectation of "more" and "much" (Lk 12:48) to be "too much" for us? (Mk 6:3) "Does it shake your faith?" (Jn 6:61)

Or does Jesus' challenge prompt you to embrace His expectation of you, obey the Lord, receive the "still more" responsibilities, and get stretched and enlarged (see Acts 20:32) to become a more significant vessel for Him? (2 Tm 2:21) If so, you are allowing Jesus to do His will in and through you.

Are you willing to pay the price to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world? Are you willing to be entrusted with much, more, and still more? Jesus trusts you. Will you trust Him? Fr Al Lauer, founder and long-time author of One Bread, One Body, said near the end of his life, "The more I say 'No' to myself, the more I say 'Yes' to the Holy Spirit." Trust the Lord to keep pouring out the love and power of the Holy Spirit in your heart (Rm 5:5).

Prayer: Father, give me the enthusiasm and zeal of St. Anthony Mary Claret.

Promise: "Now, therefore, through the Church, God's manifold wisdom is made known." -Eph 3:10

Praise: St. Anthony evangelized in both Spain and Cuba.

JESUS THE SAVIOR: OUR HOPE,

OUR LORD, OUR GOD! "But now in Christ Jesus..." -Ephesians 2:13

Almost everyone reading One Bread, One Body is a Gentile, that is, not Jewish. In the Bible, we Gentiles were described as:

* having "no part in Christ" (Eph 2:12),
* "excluded from the community of Israel" (Eph 2:12),
* "strangers to the covenant and its promise" (Eph 2:12), and
* "without hope and without God in the world" (Eph 2:12).

"But now in Christ Jesus" (Eph 2:13), we Gentiles:

* "have been brought near through the blood of Christ" (Eph 2:13),
* have been reconciled to God "in one body through His cross" (Eph 2:16),
* "have access in one Spirit to the Father" (Eph 2:18),
* "are strangers and aliens no longer" (Eph 2:19),
* "are fellow citizens of the saints and members of the household of God" (Eph 2:19),
* "form a building which rises on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the Capstone" (Eph 2:20),
* are "a holy temple in the Lord" (Eph 2:21), and
* are "a dwelling place for God in the Spirit" (Eph 2:22).

Jesus has changed our nature and changed our future. He has changed us from weeping in the night to rejoicing with the dawn (Ps 30:6). He has changed our mourning into dancing (Ps 30:12). He has changed our lives from living death (see 1 Jn 3:14) into eternal life. Thank Jesus. Love Jesus. Worship Jesus. Live and die for Jesus.

Prayer: "Jesus, my Lord, my God, my All!"

Promise: "It will go well with those servants whom the Master finds wide-awake on His return." -Lk 12:37

Praise: St. John, a lawyer and a governor, offered his intellect and life to Jesus and became a fruitful preacher.

FILTHY RICH OR GODLY RICH? - One Bread, One Body, 10/22/2018

Ephesians 2:1-10, Psalm 100:1-5, Luke 12:13-21
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/102218.cfm

FILTHY RICH OR GODLY RICH?

"There was a rich man." -Luke 12:16

The man of today's Gospel reading was a fool because he grew "rich for himself instead of growing rich in the sight of God" (Lk 12:21). God our Father is rich in mercy (Eph 2:4). He also possesses the great and unfathomable wealth of His grace (Eph 2:7; 3:8). As God the Father's children, we inherit even now "the wealth of His glorious heritage to be distributed among the members of the Church" (Eph 1:18). God's children are the richest people in the world, but not necessarily rich by worldly standards.

We grow "rich in the sight of God" by inheriting as fully as possible His riches. We do this by living fully our Baptisms as faithful sons and daughters of God our Father. We store up riches in heaven by selling what we have and giving alms (Lk 12:33; see also Mt 19:21). To build a secure foundation for the future, we should "be rich in good works and generous, sharing what" we have (1 Tm 6:18).

Jesus "made Himself poor though He was rich, so that you might become rich by His poverty" (2 Cor 8:9). God the Father wants His children to be rich with His riches and by His standards. Forfeit everything: count "all else rubbish so that Christ may be" your Wealth (Phil 3:8). Grow "rich in the sight of God."

Prayer: Father, enlighten the eyes of my heart to know my riches as Your child (Eph 1:18).

Promise: "He brought us to life with Christ when we were dead in sin." -Eph 2:5

Praise: Pope St. John Paul II shared with the world the spiritual wealth God gave him, especially concerning the Theology of the Body.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday TAKING IT PERSONALLY
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=10/21/2018

"The Lord was pleased to crush Him in infirmity." -Isaiah 53:10

Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would be "pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins" (Is 53:5).
Jesus was crushed because "the Lord laid upon Him the guilt of us all" (Is 53:6). One person's
guilt can cause him or her to collapse (see Hos 14:2) or even be crushed. Imagine (if you can) all
the weight of all the guilt of all sins of every person who has lived or will ever live. Imagine
this weight pressing upon one person at one time. Then you can understand why "so marred was
[Jesus'] look beyond that of man, and His appearance beyond that of mortals" (Is 52:14). Jesus
suffered on the cross more than can ever be imagined.

Jesus died because of our sins. Consequently, each of us is partly responsible for Jesus' brutal
death (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 598). Nevertheless, Jesus suffered dreadfully and died
for each of us personally. Therefore, the least we can do is to:

* live lives of thanksgiving to our crucified Savior,
* love Him "with all [our] heart, with all [our] soul, with all [our] strength, and with all [our]
mind" (Lk 10:27),
* tell as many people as possible about the One Who has loved us even to death on the cross
(see Phil 2:8), and
* be eager to die a martyr's death in imitation of Jesus.

When a person comes to the realization that he partly caused Jesus' death and was perfectly loved
by Jesus in His death, that person lives no longer for himself, "but for Him Who for their sakes
died and was raised up" (2 Cor 5:15). Enter the new life of the crucified Jesus (Gal 2:19).

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit so that I will take Jesus' crucifixion and death personally.

Promise: "The Son of Man has not come to be served but to serve - to give His life in ransom for
the many." -Mk 10:45

Praise: All praise and thanksgiving to You, Jesus our Savior. We adore You now and forever.

Pope Francis, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/pope/fst2018-09.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

WATER AND CARE OF CREATION

"SISTER WATER"

... I feel the need to give thanks to God for "Sister Water", simple and useful for life like nothing
else on our planet. Precisely for this reason, care for water sources and water basins is an urgent
imperative... We urgently need shared projects and concrete gestures that recognize that every
privatization of the natural good of water , at the expense of the human right to have access to this
good, is unacceptable.

PURIFICATION AND LIFE

For us Christians, water represents an essential element of purification and of life.

FOLLOWING JESUS

Jesus ... promised a water capable of quenching human thirst for ever. He prophesied, "If any one
thirst, let him come to Me and drink (Jn 7:37). To drink from Jesus means to encounter Him personally
as the Lord, drawing from His words the meaning of life. May the words He spoke from the cross - "I
thirst" (Jn 19:28) - echo constantly in our hearts.

TAKING IT PERSONALLY - One Bread, One Body, 10/21/2018

Sunday, October 21, 2018, 29th Sunday Ordinary Time

Isaiah 53:10-11, Hebrews 4:14-16, Psalm 33:4-5, 18-20, 22, Mark 10:35-45
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/102118.cfm

TAKING IT PERSONALLY

"The Lord was pleased to crush Him in infirmity." -Isaiah 53:10

Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would be "pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins" (Is 53:5). Jesus was crushed because "the Lord laid upon Him the guilt of us all" (Is 53:6). One person's guilt can cause him or her to collapse (see Hos 14:2) or even be crushed. Imagine (if you can) all the weight of all the guilt of all sins of every person who has lived or will ever live. Imagine this weight pressing upon one person at one time. Then you can understand why "so marred was [Jesus'] look beyond that of man, and His appearance beyond that of mortals" (Is 52:14). Jesus suffered on the cross more than can ever be imagined.

Jesus died because of our sins. Consequently, each of us is partly responsible for Jesus' brutal death (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 598). Nevertheless, Jesus suffered dreadfully and died for each of us personally. Therefore, the least we can do is to:

* live lives of thanksgiving to our crucified Savior,
* love Him "with all [our] heart, with all [our] soul, with all [our] strength, and with all [our] mind" (Lk 10:27),
* tell as many people as possible about the One Who has loved us even to death on the cross (see Phil 2:8), and
* be eager to die a martyr's death in imitation of Jesus.

When a person comes to the realization that he partly caused Jesus' death and was perfectly loved by Jesus in His death, that person lives no longer for himself, "but for Him Who for their sakes died and was raised up" (2 Cor 5:15). Enter the new life of the crucified Jesus (Gal 2:19).

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit so that I will take Jesus' crucifixion and death personally.

Promise: "The Son of Man has not come to be served but to serve - to give His life in ransom for the many." -Mk 10:45

Praise: All praise and thanksgiving to You, Jesus our Savior. We adore You now and forever.

HELP WANTED? - One Bread, One Body, 10/20/2018

Saturday, October 20, 2018, St. Paul of the Cross

Ephesians 1:15-23, Psalm 8:2-7, Luke 12:8-12
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/102018.cfm

HELP WANTED?

"Whoever blasphemes the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven." -Luke 12:10

To blaspheme the Holy Spirit is to refuse to acknowledge Jesus publicly before man (Lk 12:8-9). However, the Lord does not expect us to speak up and stand up for Him by our own power. The Holy Spirit gives us His power to witness for Jesus (see Acts 1:8; Jn 15:26-27). Therefore, if we do not share our faith and our love for Jesus, we are refusing the help of the Holy Spirit. This is to blaspheme the Holy Spirit.

"Do not worry about how to defend yourselves or what to say. The Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment all that should be said" (Lk 12:11-12). Pope Bl. Paul VI taught: "It is the Holy Spirit Who, today just as at the beginning of the Church, acts in every evangelizer who allows himself to be possessed and led by Him. The Holy Spirit places on his lips the words which he could not find by himself, and at the same time the Holy Spirit predisposes the soul of the hearer to be open and receptive to the Good News and to the kingdom being proclaimed" (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 75). Because of the power and faithfulness of the Holy Spirit, there is no excuse for us not to publicly speak up for Jesus. If we permanently insist on rejecting the Holy Spirit's help, we are insulting and blaspheming the Holy Spirit. With this persistent attitude, we will not ask Him to forgive our sins. Thus, our sins are unforgivable.

The Holy Spirit has made sure that we can effectively be a witness for Jesus. Do not reject the Holy Spirit's help.

Prayer: Father, thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to me. May I never send Him away.

Promise: "May He enlighten your innermost vision that you may know the great hope to which He has called you, the wealth of His glorious heritage to be distributed among the members of the Church, and the immeasurable scope of His power." -Eph 1:18-19

Praise: The Holy Spirit inspired St. Paul to give up worldly riches to found a religious order focused on the Passion of Christ.

SET FREE IN THE OPEN (PS 18:20) - One Bread, One Body, 10/19/2018

Friday, October 19, 2018, St. John de Brebeuf,, St. Isaac Jogues &, the North American Martyrs

Ephesians 1:11-14, Psalm 33:1-2, 4-5, 12-13, Luke 12:1-7
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/101918.cfm

SET FREE IN THE OPEN (PS 18:20)

"What you have whispered in locked rooms will be proclaimed from the rooftops." -Luke 12:3

"From heaven the Lord looks down" (Ps 33:13). Does He look down as a cosmic Big Brother, waiting for the chance to shout our sins and failures from the rooftops (Lk 12:3)? Jesus took our shame upon Himself. He was shamed as He was crucified naked in public, dying the shameful death of a criminal.

The Lord loves us so intimately that He is interested in everything about us. Because He is present within us (see Jn 6:56; 17:23), He loves us completely and even cares about the smallest thing in our lives (see Lk 12:6-8).

Therefore, give the Lord all of your life - all your heart, mind, soul, and strength (see Lk 10:27). Give Him your weaknesses and strengths, your failings, frustrations, anxieties - all of it. "Do not be afraid" (Lk 12:4) that God is a virtual Big Brother spying on you to expose you and humble you. That is what Satan tries to do, not God. The Lord is compassionate and merciful (Ps 103:8). He wants to raise you up and transform you into His abundant, healed life of fruitful, powerful service. He knows your most intimate secrets, but He plans to use His knowledge of those secrets to transform and call you (see Jn 1:48-51), not to shame and expose you. In fact, it may be you yourself doing the proclaiming from the housetops as you share your testimony and witness to the mercy of Jesus in your life.

Prayer: Father, "set me free in the open" (Ps 18:20) to worship and praise You with no fear whatsoever.

Promise: "The hairs of your head are counted! Fear nothing, then. You are worth more than a flock of sparrows." -Lk 12:7

Praise: St. John and his companions suffered many tortures and gave their lives for Native Americans.

DISCIPLE, DOCTOR, ARTIST, - One Bread, One Body, 10/18/2018

Thursday, October 18, 2018, St. Luke

2 Timothy 4:10-17, Psalm 145:10-13, 17-18, Luke 10:1-9

DISCIPLE, DOCTOR, ARTIST,

EVANGELIST, AND MISSIONARY "I have no one with me but Luke." -2 Timothy 4:11

St. Luke was a physician (Col 4:14). Physicians usually have greater powers of observation than most other people. This enables them to make better diagnoses. Traditionally, Luke also has been known as an artist. Artists likewise have greater powers of observation.

Luke accompanied St. Paul in his missionary work (see 2 Tm 4:11). For many years, Luke saw firsthand the wondrous works of the Holy Spirit in the Church's first generation.

Luke probably completed the final editing of his Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles around 85 A.D. Thus, Luke had the opportunity to witness much of the first fifty years of the Church.

Luke left his profession of being a doctor so he could give his life to the Lord as an evangelist and a missionary.

Luke's natural talents, training, missionary experience, and years of total commitment to Jesus gave him exceptional, penetrating insights into God's plan of salvation. He saw the centrality of the Holy Spirit in the Christian life (e.g. Lk 4:18; 11:13; Acts 1:8; 2:4). He recognized forgiveness (e.g. Lk 15:11ff) and prayer (e.g. Lk 18:1; Acts 1:14; 2:42) as keys to life in the Church. Luke saw how important in God's plan are the poor, the Samaritans, and women. Most importantly, Luke saw clearly that Christ's disciples are to be missionaries who live and die to proclaim the Gospel to all nations.

Read Luke's Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. Look into the heart of the Gospel. Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Father, let my strongest and deepest desire be to share the Gospel of Jesus.

Promise: "The Lord appointed a further seventy-two and sent them in pairs before Him to every town and place He intended to visit." -Lk 10:1

Praise: St. Luke, physician and evangelist, healed souls as well as bodies.

THE KEY SCRIPTURE VERSE - One Bread, One Body, 10/17/2018

Wednesday, October 17, 2018, St. Ignatius of Antioch

Galatians 5:18-25, Psalm 1:1-4, 6, Luke 11:42-46
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/101718.cfm

THE KEY SCRIPTURE VERSE

"Since we live by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit's lead." -Galatians 5:25

Sometimes you will find that most of the verses of the Scripture passages for Mass each day are acceptable even to pagans, secular humanists, and fallen-away Catholics. For example, in today's Gospel reading, Jesus points out the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and tells the Bible lawyers not to burden people without helping them (Lk 11:43-46). Many anti-Christians certainly agree with Jesus on these two points. In today's reading from Galatians, the fruit of the Spirit is described as love, joy, and peace (Gal 5:22). Almost everyone believes in love, joy, and peace, although they may define these words differently than Christians do. However, many non-Christians and even some Christians rabidly reject something in the daily Scripture readings. If we obey the Lord in these difficult passages, then we are truly following the Spirit's lead (Gal 5:25).

For most Christians, the key Scripture verse for today is Galatians 5:24: "Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires." The Lord commands us to accept His grace so we will have crucified flesh, crucified passions, and crucified desires. Although some people believe in toning down the flesh and not following every whim (see Eph 2:3), the idea of "crucified flesh" smacks of extremism and fanaticism to those programmed in our secular humanistic "culture of death." Here's where the real Christians stand up. Obey even the difficult verses, live by the Spirit, and follow the Spirit's lead. Obey Galatians 5:24 and 5:25.

Prayer: Father, send the Spirit to convict the world about sin (Jn 16:8) and to crucify me to the world (Gal 6:14).

Promise: "In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patient endurance, kindness, generosity, faith, mildness, and chastity." -Gal 5:22-23

Praise: St. Ignatius succeeded Peter as bishop of Antioch. He is said to have been first to use the word "catholic" to describe the Church.

"MERCY TRIUMPHS" (SEE JAS 2:13) - One Bread, One Body, 10/16/2018

Tuesday, October 16, 2018, St. Hedwig, St. Margaret Mary Alocoque

Galatians 5:1-6, Psalm 119:41, 43-45, 47-48, Luke 11:37-41
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/101618.cfm

"MERCY TRIUMPHS" (SEE JAS 2:13)

"Let Your kindness come to me, O Lord." -Psalm 119:41

In today's first eucharistic reading and Gospel passage, the Galatian Christians and the Pharisees are admonished by St. Paul and Jesus, respectively. These two groups seem to have been unable to grasp that God prefers to work through merciful love and loving-kindness rather than through religious practices motivated by attempts to justify ourselves with the Lord.

Jesus challenged the Pharisees - and us, too - to "go and learn the meaning of the words, 'It is mercy I desire and not sacrifice' " (Mt 9:13; see also Hos 6:6). Let us then continually pray the words of today's psalm response, "Let Your kindness," tender mercy, and loving-kindness "come to me, O Lord" (Ps 119:41).

The approach of the tax collector, humbly and honestly casting himself on the mercy of God, is the way approved by Jesus as the one that was justified in the sight of God (Lk 18:14). The approach of trying to earn our way into God's favor does not justify ourselves with God, and is also impossible to accomplish (Is 26:18; Ps 49:9). Pray humbly with the Church today: "Lord, let Your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in You" (see Ps 33:22).

Prayer: Lord, let Your love and mercy come to me, rather than Your justice. I lay my life before You and ask You to save me by Your mercy. Jesus, I place my trust in You.

Promise: Faith "expresses itself through love." -Gal 5:6

Praise: Before being widowed, St. Hedwig built a hospital. Afterwards she joined a monastery and became a nun.

THE SIGN IS THE LENGTH OF THE LINE - One Bread, One Body, 10/15/2018

Monday, October 15, 2018, St. Teresa of Avila

Galatians 4:22-24, 26-27, 31-5:1, Psalm 113:1-7, Luke 11:29-32
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/101518.cfm

THE SIGN IS THE LENGTH OF THE LINE

"This is an evil age. It seeks a sign. But no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah." -Luke 11:29

To the Pharisees who wanted a dazzling, miraculous sign, Jesus offered the sign of Jonah. What was the sign of Jonah? It was a sign with two meanings. First, it was a sign of the Resurrection of Jesus. Jonah was buried in the water in the belly of a large fish, and was delivered safely to land on the third day (Jon 2:1, 11). Second, another sign of Jonah was the sign of repentance. The entire population of the sinfully wicked city of Nineveh, 120,000 people, repented upon hearing the prophetic word of Jonah (Jon 3:4-5, 4:11).

One of the greatest of signs is a repentant heart. To see many repentant hearts is a phenomenal sign that was difficult to miss. This is why a sinner who repents brings great joy in heaven (Lk 15:7, 10). Tax collectors and prostitutes, the most public of sinners, were repenting and turning to Jesus and to God. Nonetheless, the Pharisees missed this sign, even when Jesus pointed it out to them (Mt 21:31).

Perhaps many do not notice the Lord working in the present time because they don't see people repenting of their sins and changing their lives. If repentant sinners are the sign God gives that could bring people to God, then let's repent and get in line for Confession. Lengthen the line for Confession by repenting of your sins and inviting others to Confession. Be a sign. Repent!

Prayer: Father, create in me a clean heart (Ps 51:12) so that I might be a life-long minister of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18).

Promise: "It was for liberty that Christ freed us. So stand firm, and do not take on yourselves the yoke of slavery a second time!" -Gal 5:1

Praise: St. Teresa fought evil within and outside the Church. She taught: "Prayer is an act of love, words are not needed...all that is needed is the will to love."

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)
