LOST IN THE TRANSLATION
"If the miracles worked in your midst had occurred in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have reformed in sackcloth and ashes." —Luke 10:13

Jesus chastised some towns where He did many miracles. He expected these miracles to be translated into repentance (Lk 10:13). We likewise need to repent. We have sinned repeatedly but are hardly aware of it. We may not even feel very sorry. We are “hard and impenitent” (Rm 2:5). Hopefully, we will come to our senses when Jesus heals us. We will feel ashamed of rebelling against and rejecting Jesus, Who was wounded that we may be healed (1 Pt 2:24).

When we’re healed, we will see the incongruity between His love and our sin. Healing will at first make us happy, but later we will be “filled with a sorrow” that comes from God (2 Cor 7:9). This sadness will lead to repentance (2 Cor 7:9). “Indeed, sorrow for God’s sake produces a repentance without regrets, leading to salvation” (2 Cor 7:10). “Just look at the fruit of this sorrow which stems from God. What a measure of holy zeal it has brought you” (2 Cor 7:11).

“Justice is with the Lord, our God; and we today are flushed with shame” (Bar 1:15). We “have sinned in the Lord’s sight and disobeyed Him” (Bar 1:17-18). Lord, have mercy one more time.

Prayer: "Heal me, Lord, that I may be healed; save me, that I may be saved, for it is You Whom I praise" (Jer 17:14).

Promise: "He who hears you, hears Me. He who rejects you, rejects Me. And he who rejects Me, rejects Him Who sent Me." —Lk 10:16

Praise: St. Thérèse of Lisieux gifted the Church with her "Little Way" of humble spirituality. It motivated a young, Albanian nun in the Twentieth Century to do great things for God: St. Teresa of Calcutta.

DOUBLE EXPOSURE - One Bread, One Body, 09/30/2021

DOUBLE EXPOSURE
"Ezra read plainly from the book of the law of God, interpreting it so that all could understand what was read." —Nehemiah 8:8

Ezra read the Bible to the people from daybreak until midday (Neh 8:3). The people heard God’s Word for nearly six hours. This extensive exposure to the Word led them to life-changing commitment (Neh 8:6), tearful repentance (Neh 8:9), and joyful celebration (Neh 8:10).

When we expose ourselves to God’s Word for an extended time, amazing things happen. For example, the risen Jesus spent much of the afternoon on His Resurrection day explaining the Scriptures to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Lk 24:27). By the power of God’s Word, their hearts began burning within them (Lk 24:32). After the beheading of St. John the Baptizer and before the multiplication of the loaves and fish, Jesus taught a vast crowd “at great length” (Mk 6:34). After healing the lame man, Sts. Peter and John preached from about 3 PM into the evening (Acts 4:3). “Many of those who had heard the speech believed; the number of the men came to about five thousand” (Acts 4:4). On one occasion, St. Paul preached to the Christians of Troas all night long and closed the Mass by raising a dead man (Acts 20:7ff).

There are things which will never happen in our lives without an extended exposure to God’s Word. Devour the Word. May it be the joy and happiness of your heart (Jer 15:16).

Prayer: Father, may reading Your Word daily (see Acts 17:11) deepen my relationship with You through Jesus and in the Spirit.

Promise: "The harvest is rich but the workers are few; therefore ask the harvest-Master to send workers to His harvest." —Lk 10:2

Praise: St. Jerome found grace and salvation (Rm 1:16) in the study of Holy Scripture.

A WINNING TEAM - One Bread, One Body, 09/29/2021

A WINNING TEAM
"Michael and his angels battled against the dragon...Satan, the seducer of the whole world, was driven out." —Revelation 12:7, 9

St. Michael the Archangel and his angels battled Satan and his demons. They overpowered him and drove him away (Rv 12:7-9). Michael stands as a bulwark against Satan, a reinforced wall to block his plans (Dn 10:21—11:1, NAB). St. Raphael also defeats demons, overpowering and binding them (Tb 8:3).

Jesus, Whose poured-out blood defeats Satan (Rv 12:11), has given the Church power to “overcome all demons” (Lk 9:1). We members of the Church do our part by our testimony to Jesus (Rv 12:11), prayer, fasting (Mt 17:21, NAB), our steadfast refusal to yield to Satan (Jas 4:7), obedience (Rm 16:19-20), and our praises, which Satan and his demons cannot stand.

If Satan has been defeated, why must we still fight him? He has lost the war, but on his way to hell, is trying to exact more casualties upon the kingdom of God. He is a sore loser, and “his fury knows no limits, for he knows his time is short” (Rv 12:12). Therefore, if we “relax our efforts” in finishing the fight (cf Gal 6:9), we might suffer some casualties ourselves. Because God has used angels to successfully fight Satan, and because the Lord hasn’t changed His battle plan (see Heb 13:8), we need the angels (cf 1 Cor 12:18, 21). We must regularly involve the angels, especially the archangels, in spiritual warfare. St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us.

Prayer: Father, may I wield every weapon You give me to advance Your kingdom on earth.

Promise: "When I called, You answered me; You built up strength within me." —Ps 138:3

Praise: St. Michael the Archangel stands "as a reinforcement and a bulwark" to protect us from evil (Dn 10:21—11:1)

LET THE FIRE FALL - One Bread, One Body, 09/28/2021

Psalm 87:1-7
Luke 9:51-56

LET THE FIRE FALL
"Lord, would You not have us call down fire from heaven to destroy them?" —Luke 9:54

This is precisely what the Lord wants us to do as His disciples: to call down the consuming fire of the Holy Spirit from heaven (see Heb 12:29; Acts 2:3-4). When a person truly receives the Holy Spirit, it does “destroy” them, in the sense that they die to their old self and live a new, risen life in the Spirit for the Lord (see Lk 9:23).

Another way we call down fire from heaven on someone is to act in love and kindness toward our enemies. They are so stunned by receiving kindness instead of vengeance from someone they had hurt, that in effect we are heaping the burning coals of unconditional, forgiving love on their heads (see Rm 12:20-21).

Jonah was eager to have a role in vengeance toward his enemies (see Jon 4:1). His heart burned with a desire to see fire fall from heaven to consume the city of Nineveh. Jonah’s vengeful thoughts flowed from the abundance of his heart (see Lk 6:45). We, like Jonah, need God to remove our stony hearts and replace them with the fire of God’s unconditional love (see Ez 36:26).

A priest recommends that we pray this prayer before receiving the Holy Eucharist: “Lord Jesus, take my heart and never give it back. Lord Jesus, give me Your heart and never take it back.” With purified, transformed hearts, let us call down the consuming fire from heaven on everyone we know.

Prayer: Father, cleanse my heart of all hatred and change me into a person of unconditional love and forgiveness.

Promise: "Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem and to implore the favor of the Lord." —Zec 8:22

Praise: St. Lawrence, a Filipino, was tortured and burned to death for refusing to compromise the truth of the gospel.

“GOOD NEWS FOR MODERN MAN” - One Bread, One Body, 09/27/2021

"GOOD NEWS FOR MODERN MAN"
"Old men and old women, each with staff in hand because of old age, shall again sit in the streets of Jerusalem. The city shall be filled with boys and girls playing in her streets." —Zechariah 8:4-5

Today, don’t watch the news on TV or your handheld electronic device. Instead, picture in your mind the “prophetic” news reported by Zechariah in today’s first Eucharistic reading. A news camera zooms in on a group of old men and women sitting peacefully in chairs on a sidewalk in Jerusalem. They are observing a game played by a group of happy children in the street (Zec 8:4-5). Zechariah, the prophet-reporter, looks into the camera. He reports that these older folks have lived many years because there have been no car-bombings, terrorist attacks, or random shootings. The old folks are secure and feel no need to hide in their homes for safety. The children have lived their entire life in peace and have no experience of oppression and injustice (see Zec 8:12).

Zechariah’s audience scoffs at this idyllic setting. Exiled for decades, they have only recently returned to Jerusalem. Much of the city is still in rubble. Rebuilding goes slowly because the people are poor and defenseless against marauders. Zechariah’s prophetic news flash seems “impossible” to them (Zec 8:6).

What situation in your life seems impossible to you? “Even if this should seem impossible in [your] eyes,” should it “be impossible in My eyes also, says the Lord?” (Zec 8:6) “For God all things are possible” (Mt 19:26).  The Lord says to you: “Is My hand too short to ransom? Have I not the strength to deliver?” (Is 50:2)

Prayer: Lord, "I do believe! Help my lack of trust!" (Mk 9:24)

Promise: "Whoever welcomes Me welcomes Him Who sent Me." —Lk 9:48

Praise: St. Vincent de Paul was gifted with abundant charity and humility.

JEALOUS CHRISTIANS
"Are you jealous?" —Numbers 11:29

People who have been given a new life in Jesus and are filled with the Spirit seem especially tempted to spiritual jealousy. They’re jealous of Eldad and Medad prophesying (Nm 11:29), of Moses leading (Nm 12:1), of a stranger expelling demons (Mk 9:38), or of John and James trying to get a “spiritual” promotion (Mt 20:24).

The Lord does not tolerate spiritual jealousy. Miriam became a snow-white leper after her outbreak of jealousy against Moses (Nm 12:10). Jesus said that being drowned or maimed is preferable to falling into the sin of spiritual jealousy (Mk 9:42-47). The first murder was committed because of spiritual jealousy. Cain was jealous that Abel’s offering was accepted by God and his own was not (Gn 4:4-5). Jesus was crucified because of the jealousy of the religious leaders (Mt 27:18). The Jews of Antioch in Pisidia persecuted Paul and Barnabas because of jealousy (Acts 13:45).

Some of history’s worst sins can be attributed to spiritual jealousy. Resist any temptations to jealousy and repent of any sins of jealousy.

Prayer: Father, may I rejoice that others are more gifted and more honored than I am.

Promise: "Any man who gives you a drink of water because you belong to Christ will not, I assure you, go without his reward." —Mk 9:41

Praise: "He has robbed death of its power and has brought life and immortality into clear light through the gospel" (2 Tm 1:10). Risen Jesus, You are worthy of praise!

GOD'S INSURANCE POLICIES
"I will be for her an encircling wall of fire, says the Lord, and I will be the glory in her midst." —Zechariah 2:9

Zechariah prophesied that God’s people would live “as though in open country” (Zec 2:8). In other words, they would not need a wall, army, or other means of protection. The Lord Himself would be “an encircling wall of fire” to protect them (Zec 2:9).

This prophecy has been fulfilled in Jesus Christ. He is our Rock, Fortress, and Deliverer (Ps 18:3). We need no longer defend or insure ourselves. Jesus is all the firepower, all the insurance we’ll ever need.

Most Christians don’t believe the Lord is that real. Some say the Lord protects us through insurance companies, military forces, and government intelligence agencies. Is this the Lord’s idea, or a theology based on our lack of faith? Did Jesus ever say He wanted to use a corporation to insure us or an army to protect us? Didn’t the Lord actually intend to be “an encircling wall of fire”?

We should always be motivated by faith and not by fear (see Mk 5:36). Let’s not conform ourselves to the world (Rm 12:2), but be transformed by the Spirit.

Prayer: Father, give me a freedom, fearlessness, and boldness I've never had before.

Promise: "He Who scattered Israel, now gathers them together, He guards them as a shepherd his flock." —Jer 31:10

Praise: When encouraged to abort, Timothy and Amanda prayed to the Deliverer and were blessed with healthy twins.

CONSTRUCTION WORKERS
"Greater will be the future glory of this house than the former, says the Lord of hosts." —Haggai 2:9

After the temple had been destroyed for sixty-seven years, the Israelites returned from exile. Following seventeen more years of seeing the temple lie in ruins, the Lord raised up the prophets Haggai and Zechariah (see Zec 6:11-12) to command Zerubbabel the governor, Joshua the high priest, and the remnant of the people to get to work (Hg 2:1-2, 4).

Four groups of people were necessary for the rebuilding of the Temple. If we are to rebuild the Church, we will need these same four groups of workers. First, we need prophets to tell us what God is saying. Without them, we don’t know what work to do or when to do it. “Without prophecy the people become demoralized” (Prv 29:18). After the prophets tell us what God wants, we need civil officials who do not play party politics, but who come under the lordship of Jesus. Next, we need priests who will rebuild the Church by fearlessly proclaiming our need for repentance and salvation. Finally, we need the “remnant of the people” to do the work of rebuilding the Church. The remnant is not just the “leftovers,” the few remaining people in a time of eroded faith. They are prophetic, called by God, uncompromised with the world, and totally committed to the Lord.

With two prophets, several righteous politicians and priests, and members of the remnant, we have the workers needed to rebuild the Church.

Prayer: Father, make me another St. Francis of Assisi.

Promise: "Send forth Your light and Your fidelity; they shall lead me on and bring me to Your holy mountain, to Your dwelling-place." —Ps 43:3

Praise: Once ruled by the watch on his wrist, Joseph has not worn a wristwatch in years as a reminder that Jesus is Lord of his time.

SEEK JESUS
"[Herod] was very curious to see [Jesus]." —Luke 9:9

Many try to see famous people, such as athletes, celebrities, stars, entertainers, etc. Often this is thrill-seeking, or autograph hounding, or simply to gain bragging rights. Herod likewise kept trying to see Jesus (Lk 9:9), and was very curious to see Him. Curiosity can be helpful, but in Herod’s case, he apparently was not concerned with seeking the Lord and the truth. Herod finally did see Jesus, but the encounter did not benefit Herod (Lk 23:8ff). In fact, Herod changed for the worse, for after meeting Jesus, he became an ally and friend to Pilate, who ruled against Jesus (Lk 23:12).

“Consider your ways” (Hg 1:5). Are you seeking Jesus for His own sake in humility and truth? Or are you seeking Him for what you can get from Him? This latter approach is not necessarily bad, for Jesus does invite us to come to Him to seek our needs (see Mt 11:28ff).  However, let us choose the better portion (see Lk 10:42). Let us “turn now ten times the more to seek” Jesus (Bar 4:28). Turn to Him at Mass in humility and truth, for in the environment of Holy Mass you can see Jesus present in the Holy Eucharist. Let this sight of Jesus change your heart and your life.

Prayer: Father, I need a life-changing encounter with Your Son, Jesus. Dispose my heart to seek Him constantly.

Promise: "The Lord loves His people, and He adorns the lowly with victory." —Ps 149:4

Praise: St. Pio, a holy Capuchin priest, bore the stigmata of Christ's crucified wounds in his hands for fifty years (see Gal 6:17).

THE "THING"
"My God, I am too ashamed and confounded to raise my face to You, O my God, for our wicked deeds are heaped up above our heads and our guilt reaches up to heaven." —Ezra 9:6

When Ezra heard “this thing,” he tore his cloak and mantle, plucked hair from his “head and beard, and sat there stupefied” (Ezra 9:3). Ezra fell on his knees and stretched out his hands to the Lord. Why was Ezra traumatized? It was because both Israelite laymen and priests married non-Israelite wives. Ezra knew they were doomed by entering into “mixed marriages.”

If Ezra were alive today, he would probably immediately drop dead from so many “mixed marriages.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches in Sections 1633 - 1637 that although the couple has obvious problems when a Catholic and Protestant marry, that marriage is not as “mixed” or as mixed up as when a Christian marries a nonbeliever or a non-practicing Christian, even if the spouse is technically in the same denomination.

Even when a practicing Catholic marries a non-practicing Catholic, we have reason to mourn like Ezra. When someone in love with Jesus marries someone not in love with Jesus, there will be challenges in such a marriage relationship. If a Christian can’t share Christ with his or her spouse, their love may never develop to its fullest potential, since Jesus is Love incarnate (1 Jn 4:8). May all married persons have a committed relationship with the Bridegroom Jesus (see Mk 2:19) and accordingly share that relationship with their spouses.

Prayer: Father, may every married person be married to Your Son.

Promise: "Jesus now called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority to overcome all demons and to cure diseases." —Lk 9:1

Praise: With simplicity of faith, Randy, a four-pack-a-day smoker, was instantly healed of that addiction by a humble prayer empowered by the Holy Spirit.

WALKING OFF THE JOB - One Bread, One Body, 09/21/2021

WALKING OFF THE JOB
"I plead with you, then, as a prisoner for the Lord, to live a life worthy of the calling you have received." —Ephesians 4:1

Are you on a job that’s not just a waste of time but even immoral? You may not be a a human-trafficker or a member of a crime syndicate, but does what you produce, package, or sell distract or turn people from Christ? Life is too short to waste it working for perishable food (see Jn 6:27). Eternity is too long to live for self rather than for Christ. Jesus did not die on the cross for you to spend your time doing something other than His will. He has a precious plan for your life and work. Don’t accept anything less than God’s best. Look at what the Lord did with St. Matthew’s life. He called him to compose a Gospel of the New Testament.

All this does not apply to people who merely don’t like their jobs, but only to those whose work is immoral, in that it doesn’t serve God’s interests. Most people are called to stay on their jobs, even if they don’t like them. Yet there are plenty of people, like Matthew, who need to walk away from their jobs.

Ask yourself: Is Jesus entering my place of employment, looking me right in the eyes, and saying to me what He said to Matthew: “Follow Me”? (Mt 9:9) If so, may you do the same thing Matthew did: Get up and follow Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, I accept You as Lord of my life and my job.

Promise: "People who are in good health do not need a doctor; sick people do." —Mt 9:12

Praise: St. Matthew once thought only of his own profit. Then he met Jesus, the ultimate Prophet, and thought only of working for King Jesus.

GOING HOME FOR THE FIRST TIME
"Whoever, therefore, among you belongs to any part of His people, let him go up, and may his God be with him!" —Ezra 1:3

The return of the Jews from exile in Babylon is considered a work of God on par with the miracle of the Exodus of the Israelites from brutal slavery in Egypt (see Jer 16:14-15; 23:7-8). Yet this freedom from exile did not mean instant bliss. The Israelites had to learn how to live in God’s freedom. They faced hardships, labor, and suffering in their new homeland, along with much risk and ever-present danger.

Yet it is more risky to hide in a false security. As Jesus proclaims in today’s Gospel passage, by not stepping out in faith, we might lose even the little we think we are holding onto (Lk 8:18). The dangers of moving into the Kingdom-lifestyle are far outweighed by the grace poured out by God on those who obey Him; those who step out will be given more (Lk 8:18).

We are called to freedom (Gal 5:1). We are also called to trust God. “Fear is useless; what is needed is trust” (Mk 5:36). Be courageous and follow the Lord wherever He leads you. “Do not, then, surrender your confidence; it will have great reward” (Heb 10:35).

Prayer: Father, wherever You lead me, I will be at rest, for You are my eternal home.

Promise: "The Lord has done great things for us; we are glad indeed." —Ps 126:3

Praise: The Korean martyrs included priests, bishops, nearly a hundred lay people, single and married men, women and children.

HATRED FOR CHRISTIANS - One Bread, One Body, 09/19/2021

HATRED FOR CHRISTIANS
"What you desire you do not obtain, and so you resort to murder." —James 4:2

In the beginning of the book of Wisdom, a group of people decided to beset, revile, and torture a just man (Wis 2:12, 19). They planned to “condemn him to a shameful death” (Wis 2:20). This group opposing the just man believed there was no life after death, “for haphazard were we born, and hereafter we shall be as though we had not been” (Wis 2:2). Therefore, they decided to “eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!” (1 Cor 15:32)

Today, we call this group of people “secular humanists.” They believe man is the measure of all things and this world is all we should be concerned about. Secular humanists like to come across as tolerant. They espouse the philosophy that everybody should do their own thing. They accept and even encourage all kinds of deviant behavior, especially sexual perversions.

However, Christians are the one exemption to the secular humanists’ policy of tolerance. Secular humanists become militantly opposed to any expressions of Christian faith. They believe in free speech for everyone but Christians. They revile and torture Christians and conspire to condemn Christianity to a shameful death (see Lk 21:17). However, in doing this, they prove Christianity true and themselves wrong, as Christianity withstands their attempts to destroy it.

Prayer: Father, may I be worthy of being persecuted for love of You.

Promise: "If anyone wishes to rank first, he must remain the last one of all and the servant of all." —Mk 9:35

Praise: "He asked life of You: You gave Him length of days forever and ever" (Ps 21:5). Risen Jesus, You are the eternal Son of God!

CHARGE IT - One Bread, One Body, 09/18/2021

CHARGE IT
"I charge you to keep God's command without blame or reproach until our Lord Jesus Christ shall appear. This appearance God will bring to pass at His chosen time." —1 Timothy 6:14-15

St. Paul said: “I have a solemn charge to give you, Timothy, my child” (1 Tm 1:18). He charged St. Timothy to be fully aware that Jesus could return at any time, and to preach the Word of God accordingly. “In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, Who is coming to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingly power, I charge you to preach the word” (2 Tm 4:1-2).

If you knew for sure Jesus would be coming back today, would you do anything differently? Hopefully, you would not need to make any changes. The Lord calls us to be so conscious of His Second Coming that we live each day as if it were our last. We are called to do the Lord’s will all day, every day. That’s the way to be prepared for His coming.

Are you charged up about Jesus’ Second Coming? Are you looking forward to seeing Him face to face? Do you wish Jesus would come back today? (see 2 Pt 3:12) True disciples of Jesus over the centuries have been excited about Jesus’ return. They love Jesus and want to see Him. Let’s charge each other to run the race and fight the fight of the Christian life because Jesus is coming “soon and very soon” (see 2 Tm 4:8).

Prayer: Jesus, may I want to see You more than I want to see the person I love most in this world.

Promise: "The seed on good ground are those who hear the word in a spirit of openness, retain it, and bear fruit through perseverance." —Lk 8:15

Praise: James and Diane take the opportunity to evangelize to all who may notice their seven children

BASICS-TRAINING
"If we have food and clothing we have all that we need." —1 Timothy 6:8

The Bible says all we need is food to eat and clothes to wear (1 Tm 6:8). Very few Christians agree with this. Most feel they at least need a house for shelter, insurance for security, a car for transportation, a phone for communication, and Wifi for entertainment. What Americans consider a simple life is extravagant by biblical standards.

The Bible considers the typical American lifestyle a “temptation and a trap” (1 Tm 6:9). By our lifestyle, we let ourselves “be captured by foolish and harmful desires which drag men down to ruin and destruction” (1 Tm 6:9).

When Jesus talked like this to “the Pharisees, who were avaricious men” (Lk 16:14), they “began to deride Him. He said to them: ‘You justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God reads your hearts. What man thinks important, God holds in contempt’ ” (Lk 16:14-15).

We must let Jesus be Lord of our lifestyle. Otherwise, He’s not Lord of our lives.

Prayer: Father, may they know we are Christians by our lifestyle, lived in love for You and for others.

Promise: Jesus "journeyed through towns and villages preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God." —Lk 8:1

Praise: St. Robert's defense of truth and Catholic teaching was so blessed by God that it was erroneously believed to have been written by a group of scholars.

A TALE OF TWO SINNERS
"That is why her many sins are forgiven — because of her great love." —Luke 7:47

The penitent woman owed a large debt to God (Lk 7:43); she had committed “many sins” (Lk 7:47). Jesus “wrote off” her huge debt of sin; He forgave it all (Lk 7:42, 48). The woman’s response to being forgiven was a model for us all. She reformed her life, accepted the gift of saving faith (Lk 7:50), came directly to Jesus, and showered Him with love (Lk 7:45).

Jesus told a story about another grievous sinner who owed a “huge amount” of debt to the Lord because of all his sins (Mt 18:24). Again, God mercifully forgave this man completely and “wrote off the debt” of his sins (Mt 18:27). Here the similarity between these two great sinners stops. The man seemingly forgot all about the forgiveness he had received and “went out” (Mt 18:28) to resume his lifestyle of sin. He was handed over to be tortured (Mt 18:34).

Jesus “wrote off both debts. Which of them was more grateful to Him?” (Lk 7:42) How will you respond to Jesus and the forgiveness He has for you?

Prayer: Father, may my heart overflow "in much gratitude to" You (2 Cor 9:12). I give You my life out of love for You.

Promise: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; prudent are all who live by it." —Ps 111:10

Praise: St. Cornelius was persecuted for proclaiming the mercy and forgiveness of Christ to those who had fallen away, but later returned through repentance.

A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS
"A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil." —Luke 6:45

We store up both the bad and the good. Eventually we get an abundance of one or the other. We speak from that abundance, which then is the fruit of our lives (Lk 6:44-45).

The key to a good life, good fruit, and good speech is what we’re storing inside. If we’re harboring resentments, unforgiveness, bitterness, hurts, and lusts, it won’t be long till we have an abundance. Then we will mass-distribute all that poison, and the fruit of our lives will be destruction and death both for ourselves and others (see Mt 15:11).

Instead, let’s store up the fruit of the Spirit: “love, joy, peace, patient endurance, kindness, generosity, faith, mildness, and chastity” (Gal 5:22-23). These will flow from our mouths like pure spring water and bear fruit to life everlasting. Like Mary, we store up things by treasuring and reflecting on them in our hearts (Lk 2:19, 51).

Therefore, “your thoughts should be wholly directed to all that is true, all that deserves respect, all that is honest, pure, admirable, decent, virtuous, or worthy of praise” (Phil 4:8).

Prayer: Father, I keep thinking about bad things. Remove these evil things before they overflow and hurt us all.

Promise: "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of these I myself am the worst. But on that very account I was dealt with mercifully, so that in me, as an extreme case, Jesus Christ might display all His patience." —1 Tm 1:15-16

Praise: Leading a Bible study has prompted Jim to frequently ponder the Scriptures and the teachings of the Magisterium.

"WE ARE NOT WORTHY"
"I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, Who has strengthened me, that He has made me His servant and judged me faithful." —1 Timothy 1:12

It has now been nearly nineteen years since Fr. Al Lauer, the long-time author of One Bread, One Body, passed away. When the task of continuing this ministry fell to me, I was filled with an acute awareness of my own unworthiness. Nonetheless, when the Lord calls someone to a ministry or task, He provides special “graces of state that accompany the exercise of the responsibilities of the Christian life and of the ministries within the Church” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2004). Our unworthiness is no excuse to avoid serving Him, for His grace is sufficient (2 Cor 12:9).

No one is worthy to serve Almighty God. Yet He Who calls us to serve Him has judged us worthy (1 Tm 1:12). So, if God is for us, no one can be against us (Rm 8:31). We cannot be against ourselves either. We can no longer use the excuse that we are too weak, sinful, or limited to serve Him. Such a claim insults the power of God’s grace and His ability to choose His servants. In His unique wisdom, God delights in calling those who are seemingly unqualified (1 Cor 1:26ff) and “of no standing” (Acts 4:13).

Servants of God, focus not on yourselves but on Jesus (Heb 3:1). “Whatever you do” for Him, “work at it with your whole being” (Col 3:23). “Do not grow slack but be fervent in spirit; He Whom you serve is the Lord” (Rm 12:11).

Prayer: Father, You choose me to be Your servant! (Jn 15:16) I give You my life. May I bear much fruit for You.

Promise: "You will show me the path to life, fullness of joys in Your presence, the delights at Your right hand forever." —Ps 16:11

Praise: Praise Jesus for working through Presentation Ministries to reach the world with the good news.

A LIFESTYLE IN GOD'S WORD
"Let the word of Christ, rich as it is, dwell in you." —Colossians 3:16

One reason we at Presentation Ministries publish One Bread, One Body is to encourage Catholics, and other Christians, to get into the Word of God. We pray that our readers would let the Word of Christ dwell in them (Col 3:16) to such an extent that they will bring God’s Word to many people who otherwise would never have received it.

To let the Word of Christ dwell in you, do the following:

  • Devour God’s Word; let it become your happiness and joy (Jer 15:16).
  • Study it daily (Acts 17:11) and allow it to burn in your heart (Lk 24:32).
  • Savor God’s Word. Let it become to you more precious than riches and sweeter than honey (Ps 119:72, 103).
  • Allow God’s Word to judge (Jn 12:48), pierce (Heb 4:12), and change you.
  • Abide in God’s Word (Jn 8:31) and let it abide in you (Col 3:16). Spend your best time and your spare time in the Word.
  • “Humbly welcome the word that has taken root in you, with its power to save you. Act on this word” (Jas 1:21-22).
  • Let God’s Word fill your heart, mind, and soul to the point that your native language is Scripture (Ps 119:13; Lk 6:45).
  • Teach the Word of God to others (2 Tm 4:2).

Let the Word of Christ dwell in you so “the word of God [will continue] to spread and increase” (Acts 12:24).

Prayer: Jesus, open my mind to the understanding of Your Word (Lk 24:45). "In Your word I hope" (Ps 119:114).

Promise: "The measure you measure with will be measured back to you." —Lk 6:38

Praise: St. Peter Claver heard as many as 5,000 Confessions a year.

BIRTHDAY PRESENTS
"Therefore the Lord will give them up, until the time when she who is to give birth has borne." —Micah 5:2

Even though it’s Mother Mary’s birthday and not yours, the Lord wants to give you a birthday present. He will bring to birth in your life something you have given up on (Mi 5:2), something you can’t even imagine working together for the good (Rm 8:28). This miraculous birthday gift will come in a small package. Look at the “little town of Bethlehem” (see Mi 5:1), the teenage virgin mother from Nazareth (Mt 1:23), and the Baby born in the stable (Lk 2:7). The Lord delights in putting His most precious presents in small packages.

Your birthday present will be opened by the power of the Spirit, or more precisely, you will be opened to the gift. Like Joseph, you will need to resist the temptation to divorce yourself from the gift of the Spirit (Mt 1:19). Like Mary, you must overcome fear by faith and “let it be done to you according to God’s Word” (see Lk 1:38). Will you receive the birth-present of new birth and new life, even in impossible circumstances? Like Mary, will you believe that “nothing is impossible with God”? (Lk 1:37)

Prayer: Father, give me the faith to expect and receive a miracle.

Promise: "He shall stand firm and shepherd His flock by the strength of the Lord, in the majestic name of the Lord, His God; and they shall remain, for now His greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth; He shall be Peace." —Mi 5:3-4

Praise: "My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit finds joy in God my Savior" (Lk 1:46-47).

TO BE CONTINUED
"Continue, therefore, to live in Christ Jesus the Lord, in the spirit in which you received Him." —Colossians 2:6

No matter how long and how deep our relationship with Christ has been, we always face the danger of falling away from our “sincere and complete devotion to Christ” (2 Cor 11:3). We can be deceived through an “empty, seductive philosophy” (Col 2:8) and “blinded by the god of the present age” (2 Cor 4:4). We can “have an evil and unfaithful spirit and fall away from the living God” (Heb 3:12).

“Our desire is that each of you show the same zeal till the end, fully assured of that for which you hope. Do not grow lazy, but imitate those who, through faith and patience, are inheriting the promises” (Heb 6:11-12). We must discipline our own bodies and master them “for fear that after having preached to others” we ourselves should be rejected (1 Cor 9:27). “Let us lay aside every encumbrance of sin which clings to us and persevere in running the race which lies ahead; let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus” (Heb 12:1-2).

“Hence do not grow despondent or abandon the struggle” (Heb 12:3). “Be solicitous to make your call and election permanent, brothers; surely those who do so will never be lost. On the contrary, your entry into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for” (2 Pt 1:10-11).

Prayer: Jesus, may we be rooted and built up in You. May we grow ever stronger in faith and overflow with gratitude (Col 2:7).

Promise: Jesus "went out to the mountain to pray, spending the night in communion with God." —Lk 6:12

Praise: Margaret faithfully persists in praying rosaries for her children and their children.

JESUS MAKES IT RIGHT - One Bread, One Body, 09/06/2021

JESUS MAKES IT RIGHT
"There was a man whose right hand was withered." —Luke 6:6

In the ancient world, a person’s right hand carried a special dignity. It was used to confer a permanent blessing (Gn 48:13-18). A king held his staff in his right hand (see Mt 27:29), and a priest’s right hand was consecrated (Ex 29:20). A thief’s right hand was cut off, thus perpetually reducing his status in society. People shook their right hands to complete a transaction, thereby giving their right hand the power to uphold their word.

The right hand of God also carries a special dignity and power (Ex 15:6, 12; Mt 22:44; Ps 44:4). His right hand is just and true (Ps 48:11). His right hand upholds His people (Ps 18:36; 63:9).

Therefore, when Jesus told the man with the withered right hand to stretch out his hand, Jesus did much more than restore his right hand (Lk 6:10). He also restored the man’s dignity and power in society.

Along with our right hand, God gave us free will. We can use our right hand to serve God or to sin (Ps 109:6; 144:8; 2 Sm 20:9ff). Thus Jesus warns us: “If your right hand is your trouble, cut it off and throw it away!” (Mt 5:30) It is better to lose our human power and social dignity than to misuse it and sin against God.

Jesus now sits at the right hand of God (Mk 16:19; Eph 1:20). What will be our destiny? Will we use our right hand to serve the Lord and so be placed at God’s right hand? (see Mt 25:34) Or will our entire body be “cast into Gehenna”? (Mt 5:30) Take Jesus’ nail-scarred right hand and let Him make your life right.

Prayer: Lord, "if I forget You...may my right hand" wither (Ps 137:5). May I use my right hand, my entire body and soul, to serve You and thus enjoy "the delights at Your right hand forever" (Ps 16:11).

Promise: "Trust in Him at all times, O My people!" —Ps 62:9

Praise: Sylvia regularly prays for terrorists.
