THE GUIDE TO HEAVEN
"Who are these people all dressed in white? And where have they come from?" —Revelation 7:13

Today we thank God for saving and sanctifying the saints on earth and in heaven. We especially thank Him for taking our family members, relatives, and friends to be with Him in heaven. We look forward to becoming holy and joining Jesus and the family in heaven. We cannot do this by our own power but we can let it be done to us (see Lk 1:38).

The Father and the Son have sent the Holy Spirit to make us holy. All we have to do is obey by following the lead of the Spirit (Gal 5:25). However, this is difficult to do because our flesh (human nature) lusts against the Spirit (Gal 5:17). There is a strong opposition between what we naturally want and what the Spirit wants. Therefore, to let the Spirit make us saints, we must allow the Spirit to crucify our flesh with its passions and desires (Gal 5:24). We must let the Holy Spirit take us to the cross to crucify us to the world (Gal 6:14). In this way, we become holy, able to be like our Father and “see Him as He is” (1 Jn 3:2; see also Heb 12:14).

Holiness is the fruit of the Spirit, not the fruit of our efforts. All saints have been produced by the Spirit. Life in the Spirit leads to life in heaven. “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, guide me to all truth (Jn 16:13). Guide me to heaven.

Promise: "Everyone who has this hope based on [Jesus] keeps himself pure, as He is pure." —1 Jn 3:3

Praise: "Saints of the Lord, bless the Lord. Praise and exalt Him above all forever!"

COMPARED TO WHAT?
"I consider the sufferings of the present to be as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed in us." —Romans 8:18

We must never compare ourselves with others (see Phil 2:3). Nor should we compare the present with the past and idealize the “good old days.” Nevertheless, we should compare the present sufferings with the future glory. When we do this, our sufferings seem like nothing (Rm 8:18). We are filled with hope and become able to endure anything, even the burdens and boredom of everyday life.

When we fix our eyes on the future glory (see Hg 2:9), we do not escape from present realities. In fact, this gives us the strength to enter into the present sufferings and trials with no reservations. This kind of religion is not the “opium of the people,” as Marx alleged. Rather, a religion of hope is the only thing that is not the opium of the people. Communism, unbridled capitalism, and secularism are the real opium of the people. We need hope to live, not mind-games, ideologies, or petty pleasures. We need Christ in us, our Hope of glory (Col 1:27).

Prayer: Father, may I smile and rejoice even in adversity.

Promise: "In hope we were saved." —Rm 8:24

Praise: Bed-ridden and unable to speak, Sarah prays the rosary for souls many times a day.

WITH THE SUFFERING JESUS
"If we are children, we are heirs as well: heirs of God, heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with Him so as to be glorified with Him." —Romans 8:17

Jesus is with us (Mt 28:20), and we are with Him. We are heirs with Him and glorified with Him “if only we suffer with Him.” Everyone wants to be a glorified heir, but are we willing to be a crucified sufferer with Him? Do we miraculously even find joy in sharing in His sufferings? (Col 1:24; 1 Pt 4:13) Do we consider it a privilege not only to believe in Him but also suffer with and for Him? (Phil 1:29) Do we “consider the sufferings of the present to be as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed in us”? (Rm 8:18)

Jesus wants to remove many, but not all, sufferings from our lives. Jesus continues to free men and women who have been in the bondage of Satan, shackled (Lk 13:16), drained of strength, and badly stooped for eighteen years (Lk 13:11) or more. Jesus’ heart is moved with pity for us (Mt 9:36). By His wounds, Jesus heals us (1 Pt 2:24). However, Jesus does not remove all sufferings. He gives us the opportunity to “fill up what is lacking” in His sufferings “for the sake of His Body, the Church” (Col 1:24).

Therefore, be healed of many sufferings and also choose to suffer in the pattern of Jesus’ death (Phil 3:10). Choose to suffer persecution and rejection for the Gospel. Choose fasting, penances, and other sacrifices. Rejoice! You are not suffering alone. You suffer with Him.

Prayer: Jesus, teach me how to share in Your sufferings by being formed into the pattern of Your death (Phil 3:10).

Promise: "God gives a home to the forsaken; He leads forth prisoners to prosperity." —Ps 68:7

Praise: Fr. Huang kept the faith though imprisoned for years by a secular government hostile to the Church.

LOVE LOVE
"I love You, O Lord." —Psalm 18:2

God is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16). Because He is Love, we are in the image of Love, for we were created in His image (Gn 1:27). Because He is Love, our sins against Him are very serious — so serious that the nature of all human beings was wounded due to the first sin. Because He is Love, God gave us the opportunity to become new creations (see Jn 3:3, 5; Gal 6:15) by giving us His Son (Jn 3:16). Because God is Love, He became a man to die on the cross and rise from the dead for our salvation. Love became flesh (see Jn 1:14). Love had nails driven through Him and thorns pressed into Him. Love became a bloody mess, brutally rejected and gasping for breath. Love was buried; Love rose; and Love is enthroned in heaven forever.

Because Love first loved us, we love Love (1 Jn 4:19). By His grace, we love Love with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength (Lk 10:27; Mt 22:37). We love Love by loving ourselves, our neighbors (Mt 22:37-39), and even our enemies (Mt 5:44). We live in Love (Jn 15:10). Love LOVE.

Prayer: Lord and Love, may I live in You and You in me (1 Jn 4:16).

Promise: "You turned to God from idols, to serve Him Who is the living and true God and to await from heaven the Son He raised from the dead — Jesus, Who delivers us from the wrath to come." —1 Thes 1:9-10

Praise: Praise You, risen Jesus. You live and reign forevermore! All glory belongs to You.

BOTTOM OF THE CLASS
"...Simon called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who turned traitor." —Luke 6:15-16

There are three lists of the twelve apostles in the Gospels (Mt 10:2-4; Mk 3:16-19; Lk 6:13-16). Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus, is always listed last. The apostles whose feast we celebrate today, Sts. Simon & Jude (also called Thaddeus), are always listed in spots ten and eleven on these lists. They are the two lowest-ranked apostles, listed ahead of only the traitor Judas Iscariot. They wanted to rank higher, as did all the apostles, and wanted to know who was the greatest (see Mt 20:24; Lk 22:24). Eventually they learned from Jesus to do only that to which they were assigned (1 Cor 7:17).

Simon and Jude went about preaching the Word, curing the sick (Mt 10:1), working wonders (Acts 5:12), and eventually giving their lives as martyrs. When whipped for their faith, they rejoiced at being considered worthy of ill-treatment for the sake of the Name of Jesus (Acts 5:40-41).

Can you rejoice in only being known as a person connected to Jesus? Can you rejoice that your name is written in the Lord’s book (Lk 10:20; Rv 21:27), even if your accomplishments and sufferings are forgotten? Can you rejoice when Jesus increases and you decrease (Jn 3:30), even to be the lowest name on His list?

“Bow humbly under God’s mighty hand, so that in due time He may lift you high” (1 Pt 5:6).

Prayer: Lord, "how I want to be in that number" of Your saints, even if I'm among the lowest numbers. Be glorified through my life.

Promise: "You are fellow citizens of the saints and members of the household of God." —Eph 2:19

Praise: Sts. Simon and Jude "went from village to village, spreading the good news everywhere and curing diseases" (Lk 9:6).

JESUS OR A HELL OF A LIFE
"Who can free me?" —Romans 7:24

All human beings are conceived and born as prisoners of war. We are created prisoners “of the law of sin” in our members (Rm 7:23). “This means that even though” we “want to do what is right, a law that leads to wrongdoing is always ready at hand” (Rm 7:21). It is wretched to have a war going on inside us, to be prisoners in that war, to not have the power to do the good we desire to do (Rm 7:18), and to repeatedly hurt the very people we want to love. When we get to know ourselves and human nature, we cry out: “What a wretched man I am! Who can free me from this body under the power of death?” (Rm 7:24) Who can save us? How will we ever know anything but defeat, slavery, self-hatred, doom, and despair? However, there is one hope. Our only hope is Jesus, Who has taken our captivity captive (see Eph 4:8).

Let us thank Jesus constantly for saving us from captivity and slavery. If not for Jesus, we would be used and abused by the evil one. Without Jesus’ freeing love, we would feel “dirty,” hate ourselves, and destroy ourselves. Without Jesus, our past would be horrible, our present worse, and our future an abominable hell forever. Without Jesus, we can do nothing (Jn 15:5). With Jesus, we have hope, freedom, love, and happiness forever. “There is no condemnation now for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Rm 8:1). Give your thanks and your life to Jesus.

Prayer: Father, I give every moment of my life in thanksgiving for Jesus.

Promise: "I am Yours; save me, for I have sought Your precepts." —Ps 119:94

Praise: Before being proved innocent of the crime that sent him to prison, Salvator found He Who sets prisoners free.

DIVIDED WE FALL — AND RISE
"I have come for division." —Luke 12:51

Jesus is the Divine Physician (see Mt 9:12). In an operation to remove a malignant tumor, a surgeon divides the healthy cells from the cancerous cells. He removes only the cancer and leaves the rest. Likewise, Jesus divides the good and bad (Mt 25:32).

Jesus is “the Carpenter” (Mk 6:3). In His workshop, He divided strong wood from rotten wood. He divided broken nails from sturdy ones. “What was useless [He] threw away” (Mt 13:48).

Jesus is the Word of God (Jn 1:1). He, the Living Word, “divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow” and “judges the reflections and thoughts of the heart” (Heb 4:12). He divides us from sinful thoughts, bitterness, anger, unforgiveness, and impurity.

Jesus is in perfect communion with the Holy Spirit and “the Father from Whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name” (Eph 3:14-15). As He divides all else, Jesus also divides families if they need to be rebuilt or restored (Lk 12:52-53). If necessary, Jesus will divide father and son, mother and daughter, in-laws, and anyone or anything that divides the family from God’s plan.

Why has Jesus “come for division”? (Lk 12:51) It is because God is Love (1 Jn 4:8, 16). Love is consuming. Love suffers “anguish” (Lk 12:50) until we “attain to the fullness of God Himself” (Eph 3:19). Love can’t tolerate anything holding us back from that fullness. Therefore, repent completely of anything that holds you back from the Lord — before Jesus has to divide you from it.

Prayer: Father, bestow on us gifts in keeping with the riches of Your glory (Eph 3:16).

Promise: "I have come to light a fire on the earth. How I wish the blaze were ignited!" —Lk 12:49

Praise: Jesus set Chris free from emotional illness after twenty-four years of struggle.

MAKING FRIENDS
"Thanks be to God, though once you were slaves of sin, you sincerely obeyed that rule of teaching which was imparted to you; freed from your sin, you became slaves of justice." —Romans 6:17-18

The Lord reveals that every human being is by nature a slave. We may think we’re doing our own thing, but we’re really doing someone else’s. We don’t have a choice about being slaves, but we can choose whose slaves we will be. We can choose “the slavery of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to justice” (Rm 6:16). If we refuse to choose, the devil will draft us into serving him, and, if we have not chosen Jesus, we are powerless to stop Satan (see Jn 15:5).

If we choose to be Jesus’ slave (see Col 3:24), we will be exalted (see Mt 23:12). We will possess the most profound dignity a human being can have. At some point, Jesus will no longer call us slaves but friends, since He will have made known to us all that He heard from His Father (Jn 15:15).

The way to friendship with Jesus is through slavery to Him, for Jesus “emptied Himself and took the form of a slave, being born in the likeness of men” (Phil 2:7). Therefore, realize that doing your own thing is a deception. Refuse to be Satan’s slave. Joyfully choose to be Jesus’ slave and, eventually, His friend.

Prayer: Father, may I not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of my mind (Rm 12:2).

Promise: "The slave who knew his master's wishes but did not prepare to fulfill them will get a severe beating, whereas the one who did not know them and who nonetheless deserved to be flogged will get off with fewer stripes. When much has been given a man, much will be required of him. More will be asked of a man to whom more has been entrusted." —Lk 12:47-48

Praise: Theresa led her friend Georgia to her Best Friend, Jesus.

WHAT'S YOUR CREDIT SCORE?
"The words, 'It was credited to him,' were not written with [Abraham] alone in view; they were intended for us too. For our faith will be credited to us also if we believe in Him Who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead." —Romans 4:23-24

The patriarch Abraham believed God in a very difficult matter. “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him” as righteousness (Rm 4:3, 22; see also Gn 15:6). What a wonderful thing to have credited to you!

Many are focused on improving their credit score. Without a good credit score, it can be very difficult to get a loan, rent an apartment, or even make a living. Many people pay very close attention to their credit rating. They worry about it and change their lives in order to improve their credit score.

The man in today’s Gospel reading with a good harvest would have had a high credit score. He had provisions in store for years to come (Lk 12:19). Yet all his treasures were for himself, not for God (Lk 12:21). When he died that same evening, his high credit score suddenly meant nothing for his eternal future.

Deposit your treasures in heaven, not on earth (Mt 6:19-20). That is where your true treasure should lie. Set your hearts, and credit rating, on the Lord above (Col 3:1-2). God does not keep score, and we cannot earn points to curry His favor, but He does credit our obedient faith to us (Rm 4:23-24). So seek to have the faith of Abraham. Believe God at all times.

Prayer: "Lord, 'increase our faith' " (Lk 17:5). Give us obedient, water-walking faith.

Promise: "He has dealt mercifully with our fathers and remembered the holy covenant He made." —Lk 1:72

Praise: St. John encouraged being a light that "diffuses its rays and shines all around upon everything that comes into its view." He echoed to people the words of Jesus: "You are the light of the world" (Mt 5:14).

MISSION-MINDED?
"...so that toward the rising and the setting of the sun men may know that there is none besides Me." —Isaiah 45:6

On this World Mission Sunday, the Church inquires of us as Christians about our relationship to the nations of the world. We must give the nations what belongs to them (see Mt 22:21). Especially, we must give Jesus to the nations, for He belongs to all people and we all belong to Him (see 1 Cor 3:21-23). Therefore, Jesus commands us to “make disciples of all the nations” (Mt 28:19) and “tell His glory among the nations” (Ps 96:3). We must “say among the nations: The Lord is King” (Ps 96:10) so that the “families of nations” may “give to the Lord glory and praise” (Ps 96:7).

Are you giving the nations their due? Do you pray daily for all nations “to be saved and come to know the truth?” (1 Tm 2:4) Do you love and befriend people from other nations in your schools, businesses, and neighborhoods? Are you praying for yourself and others to become local or foreign missionaries? Do you give substantial offerings to further the Church’s missionary outreach?

One of Jesus’ last and greatest commandments is: “Make disciples of all the nations” (Mt 28:19). By grace, in love, and for Jesus — do it!

Prayer: Father, send the Spirit to make me a witness for Jesus and a missionary (Acts 1:8).

Promise: "Our preaching of the gospel proved not a mere matter of words for you but one of power; it was carried on in the Holy Spirit and out of complete conviction." —1 Thes 1:5

Praise: "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever...Who remembered us in our abjection, for His mercy endures forever" (Ps 136:1, 23).

FAITH-FULL
"All depends on faith, everything is grace." —Romans 4:16

Because all depends on faith, we pray: “Lord, ‘increase our faith’ ” (Lk 17:5). However, Jesus wondered if He would find any faith on the earth when He returns (Lk 18:8). We must either move mountains by faith or be moved and manipulated by the forces of the mass apostasy preceding Jesus’ Second Coming (2 Thes 2:3). Only those who have faith that Jesus is the Son of God will conquer the world (1 Jn 5:5). All others will not be victors but victims of the evil one. Therefore, we need deeper and deepening faith.

“Faith comes through hearing,” and hearing by the Word of God (Rm 10:17). By studying the Scriptures, living God’s Word, and reading this booklet, we improve our communication with the Lord. We hear Him better. This makes it possible for us to have a deeper personal relationship with the Lord. As a result of this relationship, we have “confident assurance concerning what we hope for, and conviction about things we do not see” (Heb 11:1), that is, we have faith. Thus, our whole lives are transformed, for “all depends on faith” (Rm 4:16). By faith, we accept the grace of salvation (Eph 2:8), please God (Heb 11:6), conquer the world, and go to heaven. Grow in faith.

Prayer: Father, may I live "a life of faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me" (Gal 2:20).

Promise: "The Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment all that should be said." —Lk 12:12

Praise: Sr. Mary Grace answered God's call to be a missionary to India.

FAITH FORMING THE FUTURE
"Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as justice." —Romans 4:3

In the year 2000, the Church celebrated the Year of the Great Jubilee. “The primary objective” of the Great Jubilee was to be “the strengthening of faith” (Towards the Third Millennium, 42). The year 2012-2013 was declared by the Church to be the Year of Faith. If we had let the Lord Jesus prepare us in both the Great Jubilee year and the Year of Faith, we should be seeing an ever-increasing faith in the Lord.

By faith, we will be able to restore justice to our society and live in the freedom of the Great Jubilee (see Lv 25:8ff). By faith, we will see debts forgiven, especially the debt of sin. By faith, we will set free the hundreds of millions of people enslaved by addictions, compulsions, anxieties, fears, and self-hatred. By faith, our culture of death will be replaced with a civilization of love and life. Our culture will be permeated with the Gospel of Jesus (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 899).

Who, then, is conqueror of the world? The one who has faith that Jesus is the Son of God (see 1 Jn 5:5). “The power that has conquered the world is this faith of ours” (1 Jn 5:4). Believe and receive the heritage of faith.

Prayer: Jesus, I have faith. Help my lack of faith (see Mk 9:24).

Promise: Fear nothing." —Lk 12:7

Praise: St. Paul of the Cross wrote, "When the cross of our dear Jesus has planted its roots more deeply in your hearts, then you will rejoice."

GOD COURTING US - One Bread, One Body, 10/19/2023

GOD COURTING US
"...to prove His righteousness..." —Romans 3:25, 26, RNAB Why should Almighty God have to prove anything about Himself? God evidently wants to prove a lot to humanity! He wants us to listen to His case. The prophets speak of a court case (see Ps 50:1-7; Mi 6:2-3). "God must be proved true" (Rm 3:4).

The Holy Spirit testifies (1 Jn 5:6-9). God the Father testifies (Jn 5:32, 37). Jesus testifies (Jn 5:36). St. John the Baptizer testifies (Jn 5:33). The Scriptures testify (Jn 5:39). God is trying to “prove His righteousness” to us (Rm 3:25, 26, RNAB). Are we listening? Have we made up our minds that God doesn’t care what human beings think? Have we accordingly closed our minds and hearts? The above Scriptures show that God cares about what we think, so much so that He longs to persuade us with loving care, to woo our hearts with His love (see Hos 2:16). God is indeed bringing us into His court, but it is to court us out of love rather than to condemn us.

Listen to God — through His Word, His Church, His preachers. Beg the Lord for an open heart and open ears. Believe in Jesus; have faith in the Father. The Holy Spirit will prove the world wrong (Jn 16:8). Jesus is a tested and precious Cornerstone (Is 28:16). He is even proven in affliction (Wis 2:19). Believe the testimony about the Lord. Then add your own testimony for others to hear.

Prayer: Father, why should You ever have to explain anything to me? Give me "ears open to obedience" (Ps 40:7) and a heart open to respond to Your courtship of me with love.

Promise: "With You is forgiveness, that You may be revered." —Ps 130:4

Praise: Some North American Indians mangled the hands and fingers of St. Isaac Jogues. He responded by persevering in his ministry and baptizing nearly seventy-five of them.

THE GOSPEL OF FORGIVENESS
"I have no one with me but Luke." —2 Timothy 4:11

St. Luke’s Gospel could also be known as the Gospel of Forgiveness. Only in Luke’s Gospel do we meet the penitent woman whose many sins were forgiven because of her great love (Lk 7:47). In contrast with Sts. James and John, who wanted to destroy a Samaritan town by fire (Lk 9:54), Luke shows Jesus exalting the virtues of the “good Samaritan” (see Lk 10:33). Jesus also exalted another unforgiven group when He ate with the hated tax collector Zacchaeus and granted him salvation (Lk 19:5ff).

Only in Luke’s Gospel do we also meet the prodigal son, his forgiving father, and unforgiving older brother (Lk 15:11ff). This parable is probably the greatest revelation of God’s way of forgiving. God forgives affectionately, graciously, and mercifully. He honors sinners by giving them exceptional gifts and a special celebration.

Only in Luke’s Gospel do we meet the “good thief.” While suffering on the cross, Jesus said: “Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing” (Lk 23:34). Then Jesus forgave the “good thief” and promised him paradise that very day (see Lk 23:43).

Today, read part of the Gospel of Luke and forgive all who have hurt you in any way.

Prayer: Father, help me to choose to forgive all as You forgive — immediately and completely (Col 3:13).

Promise: "On entering any house, first say, 'Peace to this house.' " —Lk 10:5

Praise: St. Luke found mercy in Jesus, his Savior, and shared it with the world. He proclaimed that the mercy and love of Jesus extends to all.

SIN-CERELY
"All will be wiped clean for you." —Luke 11:41

A Pharisee at whose home Jesus was dining was surprised Jesus didn’t wash His hands as part of His before-meal prayer. Jesus changed the subject from hand-washing to soul-washing, saying: “You Pharisees! You cleanse the outside of cup and dish, but within you are filled with rapaciousness and evil” (Lk 11:39).

One day some people talked to Jesus about the front-page news. Pilate had killed several Galileans and eighteen people were killed by a falling tower in Siloam (Lk 13:4). Jesus again changed the conversation to His favorite subject: repentance from sin. He warned us that we will all come to a tragic end unless we repent (Lk 13:5).

On another occasion, Jesus was in a crowded room. Someone decided to take the roof apart and lower down a paralyzed man on a stretcher (Lk 5:19). Even in these circumstances, Jesus was preoccupied with the forgiveness of sins and said to the paralyzed man: “My friend, your sins are forgiven you” (Lk 5:20).

Jesus seems hardly able to speak without calling us to repent. However, if you died on the cross and shed your blood for the forgiveness of all sins, you’d be the same way. Christians should also be preoccupied with the forgiveness of sin, because we are followers of Jesus.

Prayer: Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us!

Promise: "I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God leading everyone who believes in it to salvation." —Rm 1:16

Praise: Just before he was martyred, St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote, "He Who rose for our sakes is my one Desire."

SO MUCH GREATER
"You have a greater than Solomon here." —Luke 11:31

A great religious event occurred at Nineveh, a wicked city of 120,000 people (Jon 4:11). “At the preaching of Jonah they reformed” (Lk 11:32; Jon 3:5ff).

The Queen of Sheba “came from the farthest corner of the world to listen to the wisdom of Solomon” (Lk 11:31). She was thrilled and “breathless” at what she saw (1 Kgs 10:5ff), and proclaimed the greatness of the God of Israel (1 Kgs 10:9).

St. Paul testified to the Romans about the greatness of salvation in Jesus Christ (Rm 1:4-7). In Jesus, there is something greater indeed! (Lk 11:31-32)

If we, to whom Jesus has been revealed ignore so great a salvation (Heb 2:3), what remains for us? Paul spells out the greatness of this call to salvation (see Rm 1:6). The Psalmist proclaims the great news that “the Lord has made His salvation known” (Ps 98:2). Jesus clarifies the greatness of this salvation by saying: “There is something greater here” (see Lk 11:31-32).

Jonah, the Queen of Sheba, St. Paul, the Psalmist, and Jesus are loudly and clearly proclaiming something great to us. Are we listening? “Let everyone who has ears attend to what” he or she “has heard” (Lk 8:8). “Great is the glory of the Lord” (Ps 138:5).

Prayer: Father, how great and mighty You are! I devote my life to proclaiming Your greatness and the greatness of Your salvation.

Promise: "...among whom are you who have been called to belong to Jesus Christ." —Rm 1:6

Praise: St. Hedwig remained faithful to her husband even though she suffered much from his violence and quarrelsome behavior.

DEATH TOLLED
"On this mountain He will destroy the veil that veils all peoples, the web that is woven over all nations; He will destroy death forever. The Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces." —Isaiah 25:7-8

Isaiah prophesied that the Lord would “destroy death forever” (Is 25:8). Jesus fulfilled this prophecy. By His death on the cross, He took away death’s victory, robbed “the devil, the prince of death, of his power” and freed “those who through fear of death had been slaves their whole life long” (Heb 2:14-15). “Death is swallowed up in victory” (1 Cor 15:54). Thus, Jesus holds “the keys of death and the nether world” (Rv 1:18). He proclaims and promises: “I am the Resurrection and the Life: whoever believes in Me, though he should die, will come to life; and whoever is alive and believes in Me will never die” (Jn 11:25-26).

“Christ must reign until God has put all enemies under His feet, and the last enemy to be destroyed is death” (1 Cor 15:25-26). On Judgment Day, “death and the nether world” will be “hurled into the pool of fire, which is the second death” (Rv 20:14). Jesus “has robbed death of its power and has brought life and immortality into clear light through the gospel” (2 Tm 1:10). Praise Jesus! Alleluia!

Prayer: Jesus, may our celebrations each Sunday of Your Resurrection-victory permeate our lives and the world.

Promise: "My God in turn will supply your needs fully, in a way worthy of His magnificent riches in Christ Jesus." —Phil 4:19

Praise: Praise Jesus, "the Way, and the Truth, and the Life" (Jn 14:6), Who was obedient unto death. Alleluia!

HAPPY JUDGMENT DAY!
"Let the nations bestir themselves and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit in judgment." —Joel 4:12

On Judgment Day, we will be escorted into “the valley of decision” (Jl 4:14). All people of all nations will be present. Adam, Eve, Judas, Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin, Mother Teresa, your mother, etc. — everyone will be there. The Lord will divide the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on His right side, and they will live with Him forever in heaven (Mt 25:33-34). Then He will put the goats on His left, and they will be damned forever (Mt 25:33, 46).

“The valley of decision” is a fearsome place. However, “it is no part of your heavenly Father’s plan that a single one of these little ones shall ever come to grief” (Mt 18:14). The Father’s will is not for us to be damned but to be saved (1 Tm 2:4). He even sent His Son to die for us and save us. Because Jesus is with us, we can fearlessly walk through “the valley of decision” and “the valley of the shadow of death” (Ps 23:4, RSV-CE).

On Judgment Day, we can “stand erect and hold” our heads high (Lk 21:28). We can sing: “Alleluia! The Lord is King, our God, the Almighty! Let us rejoice and be glad, and give Him glory! For this is the wedding day of the Lamb” (Rv 19:6-7). “Our love is brought to perfection in this, that we should have confidence on the day of judgment” (1 Jn 4:17), in “the valley of decision.”

Prayer: Jesus, Savior and Judge, have mercy on me.

Promise: "Blest are they who hear the word of God and keep it." —Lk 11:28

Praise: Pope St. Callistus I wrote, "We enjoy the possession of a heavenly kingdom together with the patriarchs, apostles and prophets."

RADICAL AND FANATICAL
"Blow the trumpet in Zion, sound the alarm on My holy mountain!" —Joel 2:1

Imagine walking into church only to find your pastor prostrate before the altar, weeping and wailing in repentance for his sins and those of God’s people (Jl 1:13). “The wages of sin is death” (Rm 6:23). We are beginning to receive our wages. In fact, we are getting not only death but what the popes call a whole “culture of death.” We have even more reason to cry and repent than did the people of Joel’s time.

We must not minimize or euphemize the deadly effects of sin. We should not take the effects of sin in stride but take them very hard — hard enough to cry and wail, hard enough to break out of the status quo and declare a state of emergency. Our problem is not that things are bad. Rather, our problem is we are in denial that our situation is that bad. Sin is the worst evil possible. Countless people are living in sin. Therefore, we are in a true emergency, even in a society of contrived emergencies.

In a state of emergency, only those who seem to be fanatics are acting sanely. Sin is worth getting very upset and sad about. “Indeed, sorrow for God’s sake produces a repentance without regrets, leading to salvation, whereas worldly sorrow brings death. Just look at the fruit of this sorrow which stems from God. What a measure of holy zeal it has brought you...What indignation, fear, and longing! What ardent desire to restore the balance of justice!” (2 Cor 7:10-11) Get radical; get fanatical about repentance.

Prayer: Father, may there be more sorrow on earth over one sinner who doesn't repent (cf Lk 15:7).

Promise: "If it is by the finger of God that I cast out devils, then the reign of God is upon you." —Lk 11:20

Praise: Martha and Robert have passed on to their children their love for Jesus in the Eucharist, at Mass and in adoration.

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE BEST GIFT
"How much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?" —Luke 11:13

I received the Holy Spirit at my Baptism as an infant and at my Confirmation as a thirteen-year-old. As a college student, I participated in a Life in the Spirit seminar and received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. This experience transformed my life. The Spirit opened my mind to understand the Holy Bible (Lk 24:45). The day after receiving the Spirit in this new way, Scripture jumped off the page for me. God’s Word became so real that it was as if I could see everything along with the original biblical authors. In the decades that followed, the Holy Spirit has given me gifts, such as prophecy and teaching, which help change others’ lives. I praise and thank God, the Holy Spirit, for dwelling in me and in so many others in the Church!

St. Matthew’s Gospel reads, “how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to anyone who asks Him!” (Mt 7:11) St. Luke, however, replaces “good things” with “the Holy Spirit” (Lk 11:13). The Holy Spirit also:

  • convicts us of our sins (Jn 16:8), fights against our flesh (Gal 5:17), and leads us to holiness, if we are docile to Him,
  • guides us to all truth (Jn 16:13),
  • overcomes our sin (Gal 5:16) and fear (2 Tm 1:6-8),
  • leads us to pray (Rm 8:26), praise, and worship the Lord “in reverence and awe” (Heb 12:28),
  • brings unity between our families and the Church (Eph 4:3).

“Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22) and “do not stifle the Spirit” (1 Thes 5:19). “Since we live by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s lead” (Gal 5:25). Come, Holy Spirit!

Prayer: Holy Spirit, lead Your Church to a new Pentecost.

Promise: "For you who fear My name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays." —Mal 3:20

Praise: Jesus healed Sarah of the desire to smoke cigarettes.

A “CANCEL” CULTURE? - One Bread, One Body, 10/11/2023

A "CANCEL" CULTURE?
"This was greatly displeasing to Jonah, and he became angry." —Jonah 4:1

Not everyone wants a loving Father, an “Abba,” as Jesus calls Him (Lk 11:2). Jonah begrudgingly recognized that God was merciful and gracious, “slow to anger, rich in clemency, loathe to punish” (Jon 4:2). Jonah wanted punishment for the people of the city of Nineveh, not mercy (see Jon 1:3; 4:9ff).

Many clamor for “canceling” people they don’t like. Jonah wanted to “cancel” Nineveh; he wanted this so much that he set up a hut so as to joyfully watch their annihilation (Jon 4:5). We in the modern world have couches and TVs, where in comfort we can watch our enemies being canceled and ruined.

God is “merciful and gracious” (Ps 103:8). Jesus reveals that God wants us to relate to Him as our dear Father rather than a terrifying Punisher (Lk 11:2). However, many nations today do not want mercy on their enemies.

What kind of God do you want? Is the Father that Jesus reveals your kind of God? We don’t know if Jonah ever changed after his encounter with God. After your encounter with the God of mercy today, will you change? Will you let God “cancel” your resentment and unforgiveness? (see Lk 9:23) Or will you in turn “cancel” God’s desire to reign in your life?

Prayer: Father, "Your kingdom come" (Lk 11:2). Help me to forgive others as You forgive me (Lk 11:4).

Promise: "When you pray, say 'Father, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come.' " —Lk 11:2

Praise: As a young priest, Pope St. John XXIII was drafted into the Italian Army during World War I to serve as chaplain and stretcher-bearer. As archbishop during World War II, he saved many thousands of Jews from being taken to concentration camps.

A WORLD WAITING FOR YOU
"The people of Nineveh believed God." —Jonah 3:5

Nineveh, a murderous city of 120,000 people, converted after hearing the prophetic warning of Jonah (see Jon 4:11). Do you believe that there are cities in the world today which would repent en masse if someone would only speak God’s Word to them?

Saul was the worst sinner in history (1 Tm 1:15), a fierce persecutor of the Church (Acts 22:4; 26:10-11), and an accomplice in murdering the first Christian martyr (Acts 8:1; 1 Tm 1:13). Probably no one believed he would convert, become a great Christian missionary, and write much of the New Testament. But he did!

Miraculous mass conversions all around us are just waiting to happen, if only a Jonah or Ananias (Acts 9:10ff) would obey God. A person, city, or nation may reject God five-thousand times. Yet who knows if the next time will be the time of conversion? We’ll never know unless someone tries.

When we stand before the Lord on Judgment Day, we will not be judged on how many converts we made but on how many opportunities to share Jesus we seized or missed. The Church teaches: “The true apostle is on the lookout for occasions of announcing Christ by word, either to unbelievers...or to the faithful” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 905).

“Listen to what I say: open your eyes and see! The fields are shining for harvest!” (Jn 4:35) Share your love. Share Jesus. You’ll be surprised!

Prayer: Father, may the love of Christ impel me (2 Cor 5:14).

Promise: "She had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord's feet and listened to His words." —Lk 10:39

Praise: Although once a drug dealer and ex-con, Lou now works to redirect young men to Jesus.

CLIMATE CONTROL
"Jonah made ready to flee to Tarshish away from the Lord." —Jonah 1:3

Jonah refused to obey God’s call. Then the weather turned nasty. The Lord “hurled a violent wind upon the sea” (Jon 1:4). Jonah tried to ignore the storm by going to sleep (Jon 1:5), but the weather got even nastier (Jon 1:11). The sailors on the boat with Jonah tried to escape the terrible weather, but “the sea grew ever more turbulent” (Jon 1:13). Only when they threw Jonah into the sea did the hurricane stop (Jon 1:15).

Many people have not obeyed God’s calls. Some have refused to become priests or religious. Many have disobeyed God’s call to have a large family. God has called us to Nineveh, the inner-city, the poor, the missions, the youth, and to many other arenas, but we have gone instead to Tarshish. We have done “our thing” and refused to answer God’s calls.

As we have persevered in disobedience and selfishness, the moral, social, and spiritual weather has gotten worse (see Hos 8:7). We have responded to this as Jonah did. We have gone to sleep and tried to remain oblivious to our self-made hurricanes. When this hasn’t worked, we’ve tried to change the climate without changing ourselves. Then the weather gets even worse.

Only when we jump off the boat of disobedience and repent will we have calm, safety, and peace. Repent before you harm yourself and a whole boatload of people.

Prayer: Father, may I quit doing my own thing, with its result of hurting myself and others.

Promise: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." —Lk 10:27

Praise: St. Denis & Companions spread the gospel to France and nourished that nation with their martyr's blood.
