HOLY INNOCENTS

"Uriah the Hittite died." -2 Samuel 11:17

God's just law prescribed "life for life" (Ex 21:23), that is, David's death in punishment for arranging Uriah's death. However, God is "rich in mercy" (Eph 2:4). Therefore, God mercifully told David that He forgave his sin and promised that David would not die (2 Sm 12:13). Later, God restored David's happiness and blessed him abundantly. This is great news for all sinners, especially for those who have committed sexual sins.

Yet where is the mercy and justice for Uriah and for those like him who innocently suffer the consequences of the sins of others? Are you a Uriah? Has your spouse or boss betrayed you through their sin? Have you suffered years of neglect because your parent chose to walk out of your life due to sexual sin? Where is the mercy and the justice for you?

The mercy and justice for innocent victims is a Person: Jesus, Emmanuel, God-with-us (Mt 1:23). Mysteriously, God provided for all victims of all time by sending His Son as an innocent Victim Who would suffer far more than any of us. Jesus has become our Justice (1 Cor 1:30). He is also our Mercy. In Jesus, victims may not always receive justice in tangible ways. However, those victims who abandon themselves to Jesus receive consolation far beyond what they could ever ask for or imagine (Eph 3:20).

God knows the perfect way to repay victims for their sufferings and wasted years (see Jl 2:25). Accept Jesus, the perfect Victim, as your Mercy and Justice. Jesus will not leave you orphaned or abandoned (Jn 14:18). Then "leave it to the Lord" (Ps 37:7) to take care of the rest.

Prayer: Lord, "into Your hands I commend my spirit" (Lk 23:46).

Promise: Jesus "taught them the message in a way they could understand." -Mk 4:33

Praise: St. John Bosco's mother consecrated him at his birth to our Lady. He founded schools to teach youth about their Catholic faith and trained them in useful trades to sustain them in life.

(This teaching was submitted by a member of our editorial team.)

GRAND STANDS

"In the measure you give you shall receive, and more besides." -Mark 4:24

If we hear God's Word and accept it, we will bear fruit thirty and sixty and a hundredfold (Mk 4:20). Why do some Christians bear great fruit while others produce little fruit?

* God gives each of us different mission fields, which produce different yields.
* God gives us different charisms, supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit, which can significantly increase our yield (1 Cor 12:4ff).
* Some Christians put the lamp of God's Word (see Ps 119:105) on taller lampstands so as to give light to all. Lampstands are opportunities to proclaim God's Word.

This book and other media are stands for God's Word. Births, deaths, sicknesses, and successes all can be stands for God's Word. A marriage, family, job, school, factory, office, team, or truck can be stands from which the light of God's Word shines.

Those who produce abundant fruit by setting up stands for God's Word are not necessarily the most creative but those more deeply in love with the Lord. If we love someone, we love their word, and that love "impels us" to take every opportunity to proclaim the Lord and His Word (see 2 Cor 5:14).

Love the Lord. Use and make lampstands for God's Word (Mk 4:21). Bear a most abundant harvest.

Prayer: Father, make me like a seed which dies to bear great fruit (Jn 12:24).

Promise: "Who am I, Lord God, and who are the members of my house, that You have brought me to this point?" -2 Sm 7:18

Praise: Tom does not hide his faith either at work or in public. Dozens of people have quietly asked him to pray for their needs.

(Set up a stand for God's Word by teaching the Bible. Order, listen to, or download our "Bible Teacher Series" on our website. Our six CD series starts with AV 117-1 or our three DVD series starts with DVD 117.)

GOOD VERSUS BEST

David "reigned for forty years: seven years and six months in Hebron over Judah, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem over all Israel and Judah." -2 Samuel 5:4-5

David took his kingship to a higher level when he moved from Hebron to Jerusalem. He was told that it was impossible to reach that level, but he did the impossible (2 Sm 5:6-7). Then he "grew steadily more powerful, for the Lord of hosts was with him" (2 Sm 5:10).

The Lord wants to take your good marriage and turn it into a great one. You don't know how that's possible. Just pray with your spouse for a great marriage and watch the Lord do a miracle.

You've chosen to be single for the Lord, and you serve the Lord with love and enthusiasm. Now the Lord is calling you to cross over into a new dimension of community life and ministry.

You're retired by the world's standards, but the Lord is ready to move you into the major ministry of your life. You've had a good life in Hebron. Now it's time to enter Jerusalem.

You're a loving, committed parent. You've done a good job of raising your children. Yet now you can disciple your children for the Lord. Come up higher; cross the threshold; enter a new dimension.

Don't let the good keep you from the best. Leave the security of Hebron for the challenges of Jerusalem.

Prayer: Father, may I leave behind not only the bad but also the good so as to follow You.

Promise: "I have found David, My servant; with My holy oil I have anointed him, that My hand may be always with him, and that My arm may make him strong." -Ps 89:21-22

Praise: St. Angela gathered a group of lay women to teach girls to be good and holy women, wives, and mothers. After her death, this group became the Ursulines.

(For a related teaching, order, listen to, or download our "Risen Life Series": four CDs starting with CD 4A-1 or two DVDs starting with DVD 4A on our website.)

PM eNewsletter 3rd Sunday in ordinary time

January 26th Third Sunday in ordinary time

Jesus, Your gift of Your presense in the Eucharist should fill us with gratitude and love.

Lord, help us to come and sit with You, and let us do everything we can do to draw others to Eucharistic
Adoration.

Help us to see that everytime we sit with You, You give us a sense of well being, and that well being
helps us walk the talk, and not just talk the talk.

Jesus, help us always be authentic in our lives, by being so in love with You, that You truly become our
center focus, and purpose.

Let us be all that You want us to be, and let us give to all, that all may see the Christ in us.

Amen and Amen.

Thank You Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday THERE'S NOBODY LIKE JESUS
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=1/26/2020

"Reform your lives! The kingdom of heaven is at hand." -Matthew 4:17

Jesus was walking along a part of the shore of the Sea of Galilee used by commercial fishing businesses. He
commanded two brothers to follow Him and leave behind their business, livelihood, families, and the only way
of life they had ever known. They obeyed Jesus' command immediately (Mt 4:20). That this was not a fluke is
attested by the fact that Jesus did the same thing at another commercial fishing business and two other
brothers also left everything to follow Jesus (Mt 4:22).

There is something special about Jesus. His words are "spirit and life" (Jn 6:63), and His actions are the
most powerful. For example, He didn't simply cure some diseases, He "cured the people of every disease and
illness" (Mt 4:23). Jesus spoke, did, and was the Good News, that is, the Gospel. Jesus inaugurated a whole,
new way of governing life. He called it the kingdom of God (see Mt 4:23).

When Jesus was crucified and murdered, "the gospel of the kingdom" seemed to have been defeated. Yet Jesus
rose on the third day and showed that His Good News was stronger than death and that His kingdom would last
forever (1 Cor 15:4; Lk 1:33). What are you waiting for? Follow Jesus and leave all else behind now.

Prayer: Father, may I be madly in love with Jesus.

Promise: "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of
gloom a light has shone." -Is 9:1

Praise: "He said to them: 'Thus it is written that the Messiah must suffer and rise from the dead on the
third day' " (Lk 24:46). Praise the risen Jesus!

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

"EFFECTIVE HELP"

The poor expect from us an effective help that takes them out of their misery... In this twenty-first
century that has seen considerable advances in the field of technology, science, communications and
infrastructure, we ought to feel shame for not having achieved the same advances in humanity and solidarity,
and so satisfy the primary needs of the most disadvantaged.

"WE MUST DO BETTER"

We are all called to go further. We can and we must do better for the helpless. We must move to concrete
action, so that the scourge of hunger disappears completely.

WE CAN DO IT

We do indeed have the adequate means and framework so that beautiful words and good wishes may become an
action plan of substance that leads effectively to the eradication of hunger in our world. To this end we
need joint efforts, upright hearts, and persistent concern to firmly and resolutely make the other's
problems one's own.

Saturday, January 25, 2020, Conversion of St. Paul

Acts 22:3-16 or, Acts 9:1-22, Psalm 117:1-2, Mark 16:15-18
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/012520.cfm

THE CONVERTIBLE ON STRAIGHT STREET

"Saul saw in a vision a man named Ananias coming to him and placing his hands on him so that he might recover his sight." -Acts 9:12

The Lord still converts Sauls into Pauls whenever He can find Ananiases who will obey Him. He turns persecutors into missionaries when He can find people who will risk their lives for the Gospel. If the Lord can get an Ananias to go to Straight Street, He'll back up this Ananias with signs and wonders.

Those who profess their faith will "expel demons," "speak entirely new languages," "handle serpents," "drink deadly poison without harm," and cure the sick by laying their hands on them (Mk 16:17-18). God will give Ananiases power to remove scales from the eyes of Sauls, baptize them, and through grace they will be filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 9:17-18).

Where's the last place in the world you want to go and who's the last person in the world to whom you want to witness? That's your Saul. That's where the power is, the victory, and the conversion of the "unconvertible." That's the opportunity to make your act of faith. The Lord says: "Go at once to Straight Street, and at the house of Judas ask for a certain Saul of Tarsus" (Acts 9:11).

Prayer: Father, I went by Saul's house today but I was afraid to go in. I repent and go in Your name.

Promise: "Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation. The man who believes in it and accepts baptism will be saved; the man who refuses to believe in it will be condemned." -Mk 16:15-16

Praise: "Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? And are you not my work in the Lord?" (1 Cor 9:1). St. Paul, pray for us!

RESPECTING GOD'S CHOICE

David said: "I decided, 'I will not raise a hand against my lord, for he is the Lord's anointed.' " -1 Samuel 24:11

David spared Saul's life when he had a perfect chance to kill his tormentor. David was a seasoned warrior who had killed many opponents (e.g. see 1 Sm 23:5; 30:17ff). The only reason David held back his hand was because Saul carried the anointing of leadership from God. Saul had been chosen by God (1 Sm 10:1).

Jesus "summoned the men He Himself had decided on" (Mk 3:13). It wasn't that the twelve apostles were especially qualified for their position; their only qualification was that they were chosen by the Lord (Jn 15:16). Saul looked like a poor choice by God. Likewise, it often appeared that the Lord had chosen His apostles poorly. They made mistake after mistake, and at times completely failed to understand Jesus (Mk 6:52).

It's not unusual to hear people remark today that church leaders are incompetent. These leaders may seem foolish to some, but "God's folly is wiser than men, and His weakness more powerful than men" (1 Cor 1:25). God speaks through those He anointed and chose (Jn 15:16). For example, if God wishes to speak about marriage through celibate men, that doesn't make His message any less truthful. It is arrogance to assert that God is not powerful enough to lead and teach accurately through those He chooses, even those who appear unqualified.

May all God's people imitate David, who so respected God's choice of Saul that he preferred to be persecuted rather than do any harm to the Lord's anointed (1 Sm 24:14; 26:19).

Prayer: Lord, may I walk by faith in You, not by sight (2 Cor 5:7).

Promise: "In the shadow of Your wings I take refuge, till harm pass by." -Ps 57:2

Praise: The impact of St. Francis de Sales cannot be overstated. His masterpiece of spiritual guidance, Introduction to the Devout Life, has emphatically influenced lay people for four centuries.

GOD TREASURES YOUR TEARS

"My wanderings You have counted; my tears are stored in Your flask; are they not recorded in Your book?" -Psalm 56:9

Incredibly, the God of the universe has actually been loving each of us to such an intimate extent that He counts our wanderings and stores our tears in His flask. Accountants are familiar with keeping accurate counts and records and valuing inventory. Imagine God staring at the flask of your tears and cherishing them. Picture the Lord counting your wanderings - both the good wanderings, such as walking with Him on a beautiful path, and the bad wanderings, spent walking farther away from Him in sin (Ps 56:9; see also Mt 10:30).

Those of us who are parents keep scrapbooks of photos of our children, and we treasure those memories of them. Likewise, God pulls out your flask with your tears and His book in which He has recorded your wanderings (Ps 56:9) and treasures you. Your good tears and wanderings swell His heart with joy and pride. Your sinful tears and wanderings flood His heart with overflowing mercy for you.

Let us devote ourselves to bearing much fruit for such a loving Father. May His book and flask be filled with the joyful entries of many new disciples whom you have helped to lead into new life with Him.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You cherish my tears. In turn, I devote my life to cherishing Your wounds and Your Passion. May I spend my life spreading the Good News of Your merciful love.

Promise: "God is with me." -Ps 56:10

Praise: St. Vincent's endurance under torture lead to his jailer's conversion.

THE ALL-POWERFUL NAME OF THE LORD

"You come against me with sword and spear and scimitar, but I come against you in the name of the Lord." -1 Samuel 17:45

The giant Goliath came against David with spear, sword, and scimitar. However, the youth David came against Goliath with something infinitely more powerful: the name of the Lord. The battle belonged to the Lord (1 Sm 17:47), and God's name was victorious.

Many giants today likewise attempt to dominate us who serve the Lord. These present-day giants might say something like "I come against you with funding, a powerful legal team, and public opinion," or "I come against you with threats, popularity, and ridicule." As members of the army of God, let us imitate David. We are God's servants, and we are in a battle. The battle belongs to the Lord, and we do not fight with worldly weapons. But we do fight, with fingers trained for war (Ps 144:1). We use the weapons of God (Eph 6:10-20), and no weapon fashioned against us shall stand (Is 54:17). Our war-trained fingers ply the rosary beads, and this weapon has won many battles and has toppled many giants over the centuries.

In fact, this teaching is being written in Church after morning Mass. A group of intercessors is praying the rosary after Mass for pro-life causes. Today is the 47th anniversary of the legalization of abortion in the United States. These intercessors have faithfully fought for years against the giant of the pro-abortion culture. May we all fight giants in the name of the Lord, and share in the glorious victory of the name of the Lord.

Prayer: Father, strengthen me to "fight the good fight" with full confidence and no fear (see 2 Tm 4:7).

Promise: "Blessed be the Lord, my Rock, Who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war." -Ps 144:1

Praise: Louise is a member of a group of intercessors who faithfully gather weekly to pray.

ANOINTED OR DEFEATED?

"Samuel, with the horn of oil in hand, anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and from that day on, the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David." -1 Samuel 16:13

Samuel had anointed Saul, but Saul had been unfaithful. Samuel grieved over Saul's unfaithfulness, but the Lord told Samuel to quit crying and to anoint someone else (1 Sm 16:1ff). We likewise need to quit bemoaning the evils of our time and proceed to anoint others. This means that we should lead people to be baptized into Jesus (see Acts 2:38), to receive the anointings of Baptism and also Confirmation. We should also devote our lives to helping the two billion baptized people in the world live their Baptisms to the full.

The title "Christ" means "anointed one." We who are baptized into Christ are "anointed ones." Through our anointings, we have all the wisdom, power, and love to transform the world for Jesus. We need only live our anointings, especially by leading others to the anointed life in Christ. How could two billion Christians anointed with the power of the Holy Spirit fail to transform the world and to hasten the final coming of the Christ? Only if we fail to live our anointings can we falter. Therefore, let us be Christians to the full. Nothing more or less is necessary to renew the face of the earth (see Ps 104:30).

Prayer: Father, by my life may many people change the way they think of Christians. Make me like Christ.

Promise: "With My holy oil I have anointed him, that My hand may be always with him, and that My arm may make him strong." -Ps 89:21-22

Praise: St. Agnes' witness to virginity earned her a martyr's crown. Throughout the history of the Church, she has been justly honored as the patron saint of purity. She is one of the best known and most highly regarded of the Roman martyrs.

WHY DISOBEY? - One Bread, One Body, 1/20/2020

1 Samuel 15:16-23, Psalm 50:8-9, 16-17, 21, 23, Mark 2:18-22
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/012020.cfm

WHY DISOBEY?

"Does the Lord so delight in holocausts and sacrifices as in obedience to the command of the Lord?" -1 Samuel 15:22

Saul greatly displeased the Lord because of his disobedience. The first sin was disobedience. Sin is always disobedience. Human nature became fallen and wounded because of the disobedience of Adam (see Rm 5:19). We are saved by Jesus' obedience even to death on the cross (Phil 2:8). Obedience and disobedience are of the utmost importance.

Therefore, it is important for us to know why we disobey. This can help us accept God's grace to obey. Samuel implied that Saul disobeyed because Saul was little in his own esteem (1 Sm 15:17). Saul did not respect and love himself. In fact, he probably hated himself. When we do not love ourselves, we will not love our neighbor. This means we do not love God (cf Lk 10:27). In this situation, we are easily manipulated into disobeying so as to make ourselves feel better. Consequently, if the devil can get us to not love ourselves, he can drive us to disobedience and ruin us.

This explains why the devil accuses us day and night (Rv 12:10). He repeatedly throws "fiery darts" at us to put us down and degrade us (Eph 6:16). However, if we have given our lives totally to Jesus, we can hold faith up as a shield (Eph 6:16). Then we do not listen to the devil. We love ourselves in Christ and are not easily manipulated into disobedience. Believe Jesus, not the devil. Obey Jesus, not the devil.

Prayer: Father, may I see obedience and disobedience as You do.

Promise: "The day will come, however, when the Groom will be taken away from them; on that day they will fast." -Mk 2:20

Praise: Pope St. Fabian may have been the most unlikely Pope. A Roman layman, he entered the city during a papal election. Through divine providence, the Holy Spirit chose Fabian!

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday HOLINESS: THE MEANING OF LIFE
https://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?lang=en&d=1/19/2020

You "have been consecrated in Christ Jesus and called to be a holy people." -1 Corinthians 1:2

We are "called to be holy." God the Father wants His children to be, act, work, think, talk, love, and live
as He does. This is the meaning of holiness: to be like God "in every aspect" of our conduct (1 Pt 1:15).

Holiness is a gift from the all-holy God. Only by His grace can we become holy. Holiness comes through the
Holy Spirit, that is, the Spirit Who makes us holy. However, we must choose to accept the Spirit's gift of
holiness.

Without holiness, "no one can see the Lord" (Heb 12:14), that is, go to heaven. Therefore, the Lord
orchestrates the events and details of our lives to give us a greater desire for holiness. He even allows
us to suffer sorrows and tragedies to help us grow in holiness. In other words, He gives us some purgatory
before our deaths. Moreover, holiness is so necessary that the Lord will purify after death those committed
to Him and delay their entry into heaven to complete their holiness, if they are not yet "perfect in holiness"
(1 Thes 5:23). However, to benefit from the Lord's organization of our lives to foster our holiness, we must
trust the Lord, humbly deny ourselves, and obey Him. Then we will desire more strongly to become holy. Thus
will we become holy, be pleasing to the all-holy God, and live with Him and the holy ones forever in heaven.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to give me love, which increases my desire for holiness.

Promise: "When you see the Spirit descend and rest on Someone, it is He Who is to baptize with the
Holy Spirit." -Jn 1:33

Praise: The risen Jesus proclaims: "I am the Root and Offspring of David, the Morning Star shining bright"
(Rv 22:16). Praise You, Jesus!

Notable quotations from Pope Francis and official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

END HUNGER

DON'T BE INDIFFERENT

... These are some reflections I wish to share with those men and women who do not allow themselves to
succumb to indifference; who hear the cry of those who do not have the minimum needed to lead a dignified
life.

THE CHURCH AND THE POOR

For her part, the Catholic Church, in the exercise of the mission with which her divine Founder has
entrusted her, struggles daily throughout the world against hunger and malnutrition in multiple ways and
through her various structures and associations, remembering that those who suffer from misery are not
different from us. They share our flesh and blood. They deserve ... a friendly hand to help and support
them, in such a way that no one is left behind, so that in our world fraternal solidarity may boast its
own identity card and citizenship, beyond any flashy slogans void of substance.

"HOPES OF MILLIONS"

The annual celebration of World Food Day emphasizes ... the needs, yearnings and hopes of millions of
persons who lack bread each day. Increasingly, there are more people who sadly make up part of that great
number of human beings who have nothing, or almost nothing to eat. It should be the opposite and yet
recent statistics are a painful proof of how international solidarity appears to be cooling.

HOLINESS: THE MEANING OF LIFE

You "have been consecrated in Christ Jesus and called to be a holy people." -1 Corinthians 1:2

We are "called to be holy." God the Father wants His children to be, act, work, think, talk, love, and live as He does. This is the meaning of holiness: to be like God "in every aspect" of our conduct (1 Pt 1:15).

Holiness is a gift from the all-holy God. Only by His grace can we become holy. Holiness comes through the Holy Spirit, that is, the Spirit Who makes us holy. However, we must choose to accept the Spirit's gift of holiness.

Without holiness, "no one can see the Lord" (Heb 12:14), that is, go to heaven. Therefore, the Lord orchestrates the events and details of our lives to give us a greater desire for holiness. He even allows us to suffer sorrows and tragedies to help us grow in holiness. In other words, He gives us some purgatory before our deaths. Moreover, holiness is so necessary that the Lord will purify after death those committed to Him and delay their entry into heaven to complete their holiness, if they are not yet "perfect in holiness" (1 Thes 5:23). However, to benefit from the Lord's organization of our lives to foster our holiness, we must trust the Lord, humbly deny ourselves, and obey Him. Then we will desire more strongly to become holy. Thus will we become holy, be pleasing to the all-holy God, and live with Him and the holy ones forever in heaven.

Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to give me love, which increases my desire for holiness.

Promise: "When you see the Spirit descend and rest on Someone, it is He Who is to baptize with the Holy Spirit." -Jn 1:33

Praise: The risen Jesus proclaims: "I am the Root and Offspring of David, the Morning Star shining bright" (Rv 22:16). Praise You, Jesus!

GREAT SINNERS BECOME GREAT SAINTS

"As He moved on, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus at his tax collector's post, and said to him, 'Follow Me.' Levi got up and became His follower." -Mark 2:14

Levi, also called Matthew, was one of the apostles, an evangelist who compiled the first book of the New Testament, a missionary, and a martyr. Matthew was also a great sinner. Jesus implied that Matthew was spiritually sick (Mk 2:17). Even after Jesus had transformed Matthew's life, Matthew abandoned Jesus on the cross. Yet Matthew repented, received the Holy Spirit at the first Christian Pentecost (Acts 2:4), and became a great saint.

Each of us are called to greatness. We are called and privileged to do our unique part in God's plan of salvation. By God's grace and our faith, we can do even greater things than Jesus did (Jn 14:12). As adopted sons and daughters of God (see Rm 8:15), we are "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people He claims for His own" (1 Pt 2:9). It is an understatement to say we are called to greatness.

Nonetheless, like St. Matthew, we have sinned before and even after our conversions. By our sins, we have done our part in contributing to Jesus' sufferings on the cross (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 598). Yet the Lord is calling us to repentance. He wants to give us a new Pentecost in which He will restore us to greatness and lead us to greater greatness. Like Matthew, let us rise from the ruins of sin to the glorious greatness of the sons and daughters of God.

Prayer: Father, fulfill every detail of Your plan for my life.

Promise: "You are to govern the Lord's people Israel, and to save them from the grasp of their enemies round about." -1 Sm 10:1

Praise: Butch spent years as a drug dealer, but he converted to the Church. Now he works with drug-addicted persons to show them the healing love of Jesus.

WHAT'S ON THE MIND OF LOVE? - One Bread, One Body, 1/17/2020

WHAT'S ON THE MIND OF LOVE?

"When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralyzed man, 'My son, your sins are forgiven.' " -Mark 2:5

The purpose of living is to develop a deep relationship with Jesus so that we will totally give our lives to Him.

To love Jesus, we must know Him. For example, it is good to know what is foremost on Jesus' mind. When He saw a paralyzed man being lowered on a stretcher through a hole in the roof, Jesus said: "My son, your sins are forgiven" (Mk 2:5). Jesus is preoccupied with the forgiveness of our sins. He even died on the cross to take away our sins (see 1 Pt 2:24).

Moreover, when Jesus saw the four men lowering the paralytic on a stretcher, Jesus saw their faith (Mk 2:5). He is on the lookout for faith, because, by faith, we can accept the grace to be forgiven from our sins and by the forgiveness of sin we can grow in faith.

Jesus' name means "Yahweh saves." Thus, we should expect that He would be preoccupied with the main aspects of our salvation, such as grace, faith, the forgiveness of sins, and eternal life. To relate to Jesus rightly, we must "have the mind of Christ" (1 Cor 2:16) and have His priorities. As we try to think and be more like Jesus, we will love Him more deeply and even come to worship Him as we love Him with all our hearts and all our minds (see Lk 10:27). Get to know Jesus. Accept Him on His terms. Love Him and give yourself totally to Him.

Prayer: Father, change my mind so I will love You in greater ways.

Promise: "You are the Splendor of their strength, and by Your favor our horn is exalted. For to the Lord belongs our shield." -Ps 89:18-19

Praise: St. Anthony embraced Gospel poverty as a hermit in the Egyptian desert. Ironically, his lifestyle attracted many followers. He is often called the father of monasticism.

THE WHY-WAIT

"After a fierce struggle Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who slew about four thousand men on the battlefield. When the troops retired to the camp, the elders of Israel said, 'Why has the Lord permitted us to be defeated today by the Philistines' " -1 Samuel 4:2-3

When we suffer tragedy, it is good to ask God: "Why?" Then we must wait on ourselves to receive the Lord's revelation. The defeated Israelites asked the right question but didn't wait. They assumed that they wouldn't get an answer, so they proceeded to fight another battle in which "Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers" (1 Sm 4:10). If we don't stop and wait to hear God, we often make tragedies much worse. So don't just do something, sit there. "For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel: by waiting and by calm you shall be saved, in quiet and in trust your strength lies. But this you did not wish" (Is 30:15).

When things are bad, we must not be stampeded into activity and decision-making. Even if we aren't good at hearing God, we have no acceptable alternative. If we act without hearing God, we are not under Jesus' lordship. Rather, we are doing our own thing. This is the very cause of our problems and repeats the pattern which has already brought about our downfall. We can't save ourselves. We must hear the Lord. He is faithful; He will break through our deafness. Stop and wait.

Prayer: Father, You are my only Hope and the only Hope I need.

Promise: "Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out His hand, touched him, and said, 'I do will it. Be cured.' The leprosy left him then and there, and he was cured." -Mk 1:41-42

Praise: Nick, a young adult, gave up a much-desired camping vacation in order to minister to a group of Catholic youth.
